When last we left our hero, the Earthrealm-born and lightning-wielding Akayama Kaito, and his three compaions, the tarkatan Tortek, the demon assassin Sareena and the Outworld-native sphinx Turana, they had left on good terms with the people they had liberated, especially their leader, the woman Yanake. Yanake had extended an offer to Kaito to stay with her and rule, but his destiny was yet to be fulfilled. With directions to his next destination, the Sea of Blood, and enough coins to facilitate passage, they thanked the people and left.

We join our heroes on a boat, travelling northwest to another continent of Outworld. This brings them closer to the lands ruled by Shao Kahn, the Emperor, but it is the only way to get to the Sea of Blood, the location laid out in a book he stole from Shang Tsung that possibly describes the origin of his lightning-based powers.

Kaito is currently on the deck of the ship. It rather reminds him of the one that he boarded on China that took him to the Mortal Kombat tournament on Shang Tsung's island. The outworlders that work the deck toil dutifully and silently as the ship rolls over the waves. Currently, his companions are scattered around the boat, minding their own business.

Sareena is currently relaxing and looking over the side of the ship railing at the setting sun. She is rather casual, knowing full well that her training makes her a full match for anyone who would try to attack her on this ship.

Kaito approaches her and she shoots him a smile. "Getting bored?" she asks.

"I'm used to sailing. Did it all the time back in Earthrealm. What about you? What are you going to do once we're done travelling?"

She shrugs. "I haven't thought that far ahead."

"So... what about Quan Chi? Are you going back to working for him and the Brotherhood of Shadows after we split?"

She grows quiet as she looks out over the waves. "You know... I honestly don't know. It's been very liberating to be out of the Netherrealm for this long..."

"He usually keep you down there?"

"It's my home. I'm a demon, after all."

"Yeah... I forget most of the time, the way you look and all."

"That's intentional. If I looked the way I used to, I couldn't get as close to my victims."

"I'll keep that in mind... But seriously, are you going to go back to him?"

"Just being away from his influence has had a... powerful effect on me, I must admit. But he'll come back for me eventually. It will be easier just to return to his service, and then you and I will be enemies again."

She is silent. "For what it is worth, I have enjoyed our time together. It was... fun, believe it or not."

"Hey, I've had fun too," Kaito says with a smile. "And it doesn't have to end just because some chalky sorcerer says so."

"We'll see," she says.

In the interest of variety, I'll go with B. Don't worry, there'll be time for waifus all in good time.

Kaito parts from Sareena and goes to hunt down Tortek. He is in the bowels of the ship, using his large teeth to tear into a considerable portion of jerky. The dry meat resists his jaws but he is ravenous and relentless.

He pauses briefly as Kaito approaches but continues to chew.

"We're headed into the Emperor's territory. That means tarkatans, right?"

"Many tarkatans in the Emperor's army," Tortek nods. "Emperor conquered Tarkata. Tarkatans respect strength and follow."

"And Baraka is their leader?" Kaito remembers his last duel with Baraka; he nearly came out on top before being interrupted.

"Baraka leads. Baraka strongest tarkatan."

Kaito feels confident that he can take on Baraka. "What other races work for the Emperor?"

"Shokan. Centaurs. But they hate each others. Many beasts and monsters. Dark sorcerers. Great warriors."

Kaito nods. "What about you, Tortek? Who do you serve?"

"I serve only you Master," he quickly replies.

Kaito waves a hand. "No 'Master' anymore, please. We're friends, you're not a slave. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you're on my side, but you're more than just a dog, Tortek."

The tarkatan is silent for a moment, perhaps thinking he had done wrong. He goes back to chewing on his meat.

"So what happens if Baraka dies? The next strongest tarkatan takes his place?"

Tortek nods.

"What about you, Tortek? Could you lead the tarkatans if we got rid of Baraka?"

Tortek is silent, the idea running through his head. "Tortek not sure he can lead," he says. "Mostly follows."

"Yeah, but you've gotten stronger since you started following me around. What would you do if you were leader?"

"Tortek would... Tortek would have the taraka bring him food," he replies.

"You've got a one-track mind, buddy," Kaito says.

Still, Kaito can't help but wonder at such a thing. If he could get rid of Baraka and put Tortek at the top, and Tortek still swore loyalty to him, he could have an army of tarkatans. An interesting idea... but what would he do with them? Send them against the Emperor's armies? Who knows?

Kaito stands up and leaves Tortek to his food.

Kaito decides to explore the lower levels of the ship. The vessel appears to be primarily a cargo ship, with many boxes containing supplies like dried meats, fish and other foodstuffs, along with barrels of water and wine. Kaito discovers a locked chest, apparently someone's personal belongings. The lock is rather old and rusty, but appears to be in working order. Perhaps he could break it...

As he rounds a corner, he ducks behind a crate as a ship worker comes around the other way. He sticks his head out and looks, finding a locked door. A guard is nearby, sitting at a table, asleep. A key is tied to a thin strip of leather hanging around his neck.

Kaito decides to take a closer look at the crates and barrels. He finds a small jug of Outworld wine hidden away, just like the kind he once shared with Master Bo' Rai Cho. It might belong to one of the crew, but Kaito can hide it on his person, so he takes it and does so.

He also manages to take some dried meat; it might come in handy later on.

The chest is locked with an old metal lock. Kaito thinks he could break it with his hands, but that would be rather loud. He could try using his electricity, but that might also draw attention. He could also try finding a way to pick the lock... Sareena is also quite skilled with matters of stealth and infiltration. Perhaps she could help.

Heading back up to the main deck, Kaito quickly tracks down the demon assassin and tells her of his findings below.

She shrugs, having nothing better to do, and follows him below deck. Once presented with the chest, she leans over it and inspects the lock.

"This should be easy enough," she says, producing a small piece of metal from a hidden pouch. She picks the lock swiftly and in just a few short moments, hands Kaito the open lock.

Kaito thanks her and leans down to open the chest.

Within are a few blank pieces of paper, but one of them, an old parchment of slight blue coloration that is rolled up, catches Kaito's eye.

Unrolling it reveals it to be a map. It seems to indicate a hidden series of caves, the Ice Caverns, somewhere in Outworld. Orienting the map to the one that Kaito already possesses, he discovers that these caves are on the same continent that they are travelling to!

Perhaps somewhere to visit after the Sea of Blood? Who knows. Kaito rolls it up for now and puts it away.

"And the guard and key? How about that?"

She rolls her eyes. "Oh, yes, almighty lightning warrior, it would be my pleasure."

"Hey, I wouldn't keep bothering you if I knew how to do this stuff myself."

She leaps onto a nearby crate and then across the way, stealthily maneuvering herself over the sleeping guard. She bends down over his head and deftly picks the key up from around his neck and then bends upwards.

After making her way over to Kaito once more, he smiles. "As always, impressive. But what are we going to do if he wakes up?"

She looks back at the guard and takes out a knife.

"Woah, woah, let's not start killing the crew of the ship we're on," Kaito suggests.

She shrugs and puts the knife away. Kaito looks around and finds a piece of wood. He grabs it, walks quietly up to the guard, and smashes it over his head, knocking him out.

"There, see? Much better."

Approaching the door, Kaito uses the key on it and opens it up.

Within is an empty room, save for one object... a black wooden coffin, standing up against the far wall.

Kaito and Sareena look at it. It bears no markings of any kind to indicate ownership or who or what may be in it.

"Well?" Sareena asks.

Kaito gathers up Tortek, Turana and Sareena and spends time with them. They speak on various things and generally grow closer as the long voyage lasts on.

As the sun sets, the captain of the boat, a large, gruff man with a beard, shouts down at Kaito.

"It's time!" he yells.

Kaito looks up. "Time for what?"

"Time for you to get off my boat. The Sea of Blood is to the east. You can take the lifeboat."

Kaito looks incredulously at the man. "Wait, what? You're not going there?"

"Boy, it's the Sea of Blood. The dead rise up from the red waters to overwhelm ships. Waves of blood wash over wrecks and the crew turn into the damned. I'll not take my boat there, not for you, not for the Emperor, not for any of the Elder Gods. Now get off my ship."

Kaito sighs and looks back at the others.

"There may be another way," Turana suggests. "I can grow large, and all of you can climb onto my back. If the Sea of Blood is not far, I can make the flight."

"You sure that won't tire you out?" Kaito asks.

"It might," the sphinx replies.

Kaito looks back up at the captain. "Can you take us any closer to the Sea of Blood? Perhaps just to its border?"

"I'll not get any closer to that accursed place! I have my ship, I have my crew, and I'll not lose both of them for you."

Kaito looks at Turana. "We'll take the lifeboat. If things get too bad, we'll use your transformation as our backup plan."

"I understand," she says with a nod.

The four pile into the lifeboat and the crew lower it into the water.

Kaito and Tortek start to row eastwards.

After an hour or so, as the sun starts to vanish from the horizon, the water begins to turn red. Kaito looks out over the side of the boat as the water turns to blood, and they begin to row through the deep crimson sea.

As they near formations of stone and wrecked ships, Kaito can swear he hears the sounds of light scraping on the bottom of the boat. It must just be stones, though, surely.

As they keep a lookout for the temple described in Kaito's book, they do not notice the water rippling around them.

A hand, belonging to a woman long since dead, shoots out of the water and grabs ahold of Kaito and begins to pull. Kaito struggles and tries to break free as more hands begin to break the surface of the bloody sea and reach for the boat.

Kaito summons up as much energy as he can and shocks the water, sending surges of electricity into all of the dead. The wood of the boat protects everyone inside from the shocking display of power and the dead shrivel back beneath the surface and bother the ship no more.

In the distance, as the ship penetrates the veil of mist ahead, a temple becomes visible. The ancient stones are covered in dried blood and thick, red vines have overgrown much of it.

"This must be it," Kaito says breathlessly, catching his second wind after using so much of his energy.

They navigate the boat up to the edge of the stone path leading up to the temple. There is a large staircase leading up into a main chamber, but there are also smaller tunnels nearby.

"Turana, can you fly up and see if anything catches your eye?"

The sphinx nods and flies high up, her wings cutting through the air as she circles overhead. Nearby, Sareena inspects the walls for symbols or writing, but doesn't come up with anything.

After a few minutes, Turana flies down and lands. "I don't see anyone or anything. No one living or dead."

Kaito nods. "Alright... we should head inside."

>>40418568

Kaito proceeds up the stairs and into the main chamber. Though dark, the halls within are lit by great burning braziers. The ancient floor has much splattered blood on it, as do the walls. Kaito wonders if it is from the sea outside or from battles or murders that have taken place here.

As they wander towards the heart of the temple, a voice reaches their ears.

"What brings you here?"

The voice is feminine, and seems to come from all around. Even Sareena is confused as to its point of origin.

Kaito looks around, searching for the voice. "Do you know anything about me? About my power? A legend of a warrior who wielded red lightning?"

"No... I do not... but the blood might yet reveal the answer. The main chamber..."

The voice grows quiet and Kaito continues on.

The heart of the temple is a massive room with an altar in the middle, reached by a suspension bridge. Great sculptures and tapestries as red as blood line the walls, and around the altar, a massive pit, at the bottom of which something unknowable writhes in the darkness.

Here, great sacrifices and rituals were performed, but for who and what purpose, Kaito cannot say.

Tortek looks around, smelling. "Too much blood. Makes nose itch. Can't smell enemies."

Kaito crosses his arms. "The journal said that the man had tracked who he believed to be the final remnant of the ancient lightning warrior's bloodline to this temple... but who knows how long ago that was. For all I know, they're both long gone..."

"I was born here, in this temple," the voice says. "This is the closest place I have to a home... and if I am quiet, very quiet, sometimes, the blood here speaks to me..."

Kaito is silent for a moment. "That really, REALLY doesn't answer my question," he says. "Any of my questions. In fact, I think I have more now. Just who are you, exactly? Out with it!"

"Kaito, look out!" Sareena says, taking out a knife. Kaito looks where she is pointing and sees blood moving along the ground like a living pool, seeping its way through the cracks and running over the bricks.

Kaito leaps back and the four prepare themselves as the blood pools up and rises, taking shape and eventually humanoid form. The blood seeps away, revealing skin, cloth, hair and piercing red eyes. Two short, thin blades are held at the back of her shapely waist and knives are strapped to her thigh.

"My name... is Skarlet, and I am one with the blood, for I am the blood."

Kaito's eyes widen. "How did you do that? What are you?"

"I am one with the blood," she repeats. "I was born of it... a thousand warriors spilled blood within this temple, and from their essence, I was forged."

"Okay... So then, why would you be willing to help me?"

"Because perhaps you can help me in turn," she says. "This place is my home, but it is also my prison... I am forbidden to leave unless my master bids it. I desire more freedom, to wander the Sea of Blood and taste its secrets... but within this temple, I am restrained."

Sareena leans in closely. "I do not know if we can trust her," she says. "She was made by blood magic... Who can say where her loyalty truly lies?"

"My master is a powerful sorcerer in his own right. I am his personal assassin. When he does not need me, I am kept here, away from others. Make no mistake; I am grateful you are here and are willing to help me."

Kaito nods. "Alright, so what do I need to do?"

"There is much blood in this place... many voices, and many are ancient. We must find the trail of those you seek..."

She closes her eyes and then approaches a nearby blood-splattered wall, feeling its surface. "Many have passed through this place... but a warrior such as the one you described would be distinctive..."

She turns to face Kaito. "Perhaps, there is a way to hone in on the ancient blood... Give me a drop of yours. Your similar power will act as a guide for me..."

"Is that a good idea?" Kaito asks.

"I need only a drop, and I may be able to pcik up the scent," Skarlet replies.

Kaito takes one of Sareena's knives and prepares to cut his finger, but pauses.

"What sorcerer? What is the name of your master?"

Now, it is Skarlet's turn to pause. She does not immediately answer.

As the silence continues, a voice, a new one, interrupts it.

"Stop what you are doing," the old voice says, one that Kaito finds familiar.

"That voice..." he whispers aloud.

From the shadows emerges a man, rather old and somewhat heavyset, with a thick grey beard. His clothing is simple and his head is shaven.

"It can't be..." Kaito says.

"My son," the man replies, "it can."

Akayama Fujio, Kaito's father.

"Do not trust this construct of blood, my son," his father says. "She seeks to manipulate you."

"It is a trick!" Skarlet claims. "The work of magic! Surely you are not this easily fooled?"

"He was about to give you blood. Of course he is," Fujio says to the red-haired vixen. He looks back at Kaito. "My son, please... come to me."

"What day was I born?" Kaito asks his father.

"April 22nd, 1972," Fujio answers.

"What was my favorite ice cream when I was a child?"

"Chocolate."

Kaito begins to truly believe. "Last one... The last day I saw you, what did you say to me before you left?"

"Nothing, because I did not speak to you the day I left."

Could it truly be him? How can this be? How did he make it to Outworld? Was he the one the book spoke of? Has he been waiting here for Kaito?

"Do not believe him!" Skarlet says. "I need your blood, now!"

Kaito gives Sareena back her knife.

Skarlet, powerless to act without the consent of her master, only narrows her eyes and growls, "You will regret this, mortal," to Kaito before falling backwards against the ground and becoming as blood, pooling away from them and vanishing into the cracks.

Kaito turns to his father. "I... I don't know what to make of this, father," he says.

"You have many questions, I am sure," he says. "Come, let us talk."

As Kaito follows him, the others begin to follow. Fujio turns. "I must speak to my son in private. It is a... family matter, so to say, very personal. Kaito, please," he bids.

Kaito looks between them.

"You're the one who abandoned me father, I'll not leave my friends in the dark. They come with me."

After a moment, he nods. "Very well."

Kaito and his three companions follow him down a hallway and outside to a courtyard of sorts. This doesn't lesson the amount of blood scattered about the walls and floors, but the moonlit horizon is a nice change.

"I know you must have many questions, so let me answer what I know is the most pressing, my son. I left because I was summoned to battle for Earthrealm against Outworld."

"In Mortal Kombat?"

Fujio nods. "I lost, but was spared, and found myself lost in Outworld."

"I know a little of what that is like," Kaito admits. "I've been wandering ever since a sorcerer dropped me off in the middle of nowhere."

"If there's one thing I've learned, it's that you can never trust a sorcerer," Fujio laughs.

Kaito takes out the tome he first read about the ancient red lightning warrior in.

"What about this book? It talks about a warrior who used red lightning, like the old stories you used to tell me when you were teaching me the Bloody Fist style. It's what led me here. What is this really all about? What is this temple to us?"

Fujio looks at the book. "When I told you those stories... it was more than just fancy. We share in a bloodline that goes back centuries, all the way to when the blood of that warrior fell upon the earth. Every person who was touched by his blood carried a piece of his power... but few could ever unlock it, nurture it, allow it to grow. You and I, son... we have that gift."

He holds out a hand and creates a ball of electricity. "Have you obtained this power as well?"

Kaito does the same. "I've used it ever since I met a god named Raiden, who unlocked part of my inner potential."

Fujio's eyes narrow at the mention of Raiden. "The god of Earthrealm? I have met him before... I do not like him much."

"You don't like Raiden? Why?"

"He was the one who recruited us, me and the other Earthrealm fighters. We fought for him, and when we lost, he abandoned us. I have no sympathy for the god that has no sympathy for the people he claims to care about."

"He can't be all that bad, can he?"

"He is the one who killed the ancient warrior, Kaito, the 'one who challenged the gods'? Raiden was the god of thunder and lightning who killed him. I suppose we actually owe him that, seeing as how we have our power because of him... but I believe that if he ever learned the truth of who we are, he would attempt to kill us, to prevent another warrior from rising up and challenging the gods as our 'progenitor' did."

Kaito is silent for a moment, reflecting on these words.

"The latter half of this book is written from someone who was trying to track down people with the blood of that ancient warrior... He followed someone here, to Outworld, to this temple, specifically... Who else could it have been but you, father?"

"Yes, it was me he was following. He was a scholarly man, not a warrior, not suited to Outworld... the Sea of Blood claimed his life, and I rescued his journal."

"But... I stole this from Shang Tsung. A sorcerer."

"That you did, because he stole it from me. I ran afoul of him more than once, from the tournament, to my wanderings in Outworld..."

"Then why are you here now? Have you been waiting here?"

"Yes, my son... I have been waiting for you."

"But how? I don't understand. How could you have known?"

Fujio places a hand on Kaito's shoulder. "Life is mysterious, and the ways of Outworld are even more mysterious... I will explain this in due time. But first, son, if you don't mind... I would like to see how powerful you have become."

He stands opposite his father while his three companions watch from the balcony above.

"Now, I don't want you to hold back, show me your true power, every last bit of it," his father says.

"Whatever you say," Kaito says with a mocking grin, getting into a combat-ready pose.

Fujio leaps up with a backflip and prepares for Kaito's next move. "I see you've moved beyond simple electricity," he notes. "Very good!"

Instead, he throws himself forwards, transferring the energy into a pair of lightning gauntlets that encircle his fists and arms. He attacks his father with a series of wild but well-placed blows, chopping away at his defenses. The lightning on his arms is countered by his father's own similar technique, and each time their arms meet, a series of sparks showers outwards and lights up the area. Eventually Kaito forces his father backwards with a kick, getting him off-balance, and then he delivers a powerful blow to the back of the neck that sends his father to the ground.

The bolt strikes Kaito in the chest and he gets a taste of his own medicine as the shocking jolt knocks him back. Fujio gets up to this feet.

Kaito unleashes a torrent of lightning against his father, a veritable storm of bolts, but each one is either dodged or blocked. His father teleports, becoming as a bolt of lightning himself and flashing behind Kaito. As the younger warrior turns around, his father punches him in the face, drawing blood from his mouth. Kaito falls back as his father stands with his blood dripping from his fist.

"You're holding back, boy! Show me what you truly have! Show me the red lightning!"

Kaito remembers back to that pyramid in the desert, in that demirealm of existence, where he fought the mummy sorcerer Sumancothep. He achieved the power of red lightning, the energy fueled by rage and blood--but should he unleash it now, just to show his father that he can?

"You truly wish to see?"

His father shakes his head with a smile. "You don't have it, do you?"

"I have it, alright," Kaito replies. "And I'm more than willing to show you."

Kaito grits his teeth and focuses, summoning the energy from within. Electrical energy surges around him, bright white and blue like normal. His hands close into fists as he digs his feet into the ground.

Above, his companions watch, concerned, as the air around Kaito begins to dim slightly. Kaito lets out a shout as the power begins to well up inside of him, becoming overwhelming, breaking through barriers and pouring out like a font of pure energy.

Kaito's eyes blast wide open as he reaches his threshold, the pain subsiding as the energy around him begins to glow red, the lightning becoming a stark crimson color. His fingers have drawn some of his own blood, so tightly clenched were his fists.

Fujio watches in amazement. "By the Elder Gods... you've done it, Kaito..."

Kaito feels the power within him; in this ascended state, he is stronger, faster, much more powerful than before. He lets out a labored breath as he looks at his father.

"This is very good," Fujio says, standing normally, stepping out of his combat stance.

Kaito's brow furrows slightly in confusion. Does his father no longer wish to battle?

"You've done far more than I'd have ever hoped," Fujio says, raising one of his hands.

From behind Tortek, Sareena and Turana emerge three powerful shadow priests, each casting a spell of holding upon them. Dark chains wrap around each, holding them in place, despite their protests.

"What? Father! What is--"

Kaito stops as he looks back to Fujio, who is now covered in a green aura. His father smiles as his features shift and change in the green light, to that of...

...Shang Tsung.

Kaito is stunned as the sorcerer reveals himself. "You... where is my father?! What have you done with him?!"

"Do you think all of those questions you asked him were clever guesses?" Shang Tsung asks with a smile. "No... knowledge obtained from when I defeated him, years ago, in this very temple... and took his soul for my own."

"That... That cannot be!" Kaito protests.

Shang holds up a hand and summons forth a ball of lightning. "His knowledge, his strength, his powers... all taken by me. But imagine my disappointment when I learned that he had not yet achieved the power locked within his blood, the power of the Crimson Lightning... the power you have obtained, Kaito. I suppose congratulations are in order, since you succeeded where your father failed."

"Then it was all lies?" Kaito demands to know, his fury building, barely held back.

"No, almost all of what I told you was the truth... What few lies there were, well, you believed them. But I had to see for myself. I had to know that you truly had mastered your inner power... Now that I have, there is little need for further charades."

"Then that was the purpose of all of this? To simply trick me?"

"Well, since I'm being honest, which is rare for me... I came here for a different purpose. You see, Earthrealm won the tournament... I was defeated and disgraced by that accursed Shaolin Monk, Liu Kang."

"Serves you right you son of a bitch," Kaito spits out.

"But I need not hide my shame, because in my wisdom, I convinced the Emperor to spare me... and now, there is a new tournament being held."

"What? Another Mortal Kombat?"

"Held here in Outworld. If Outworld wins, Earthrealm will be invaded and conquered. But if Earthrealm wins, the Emperor will abandon his claim to it forever... the foolish god Raiden agreed to these terms, after a little... persuasion."

"Then why are you here? You still haven't answered me that."

"I came here to retrieve the Emperor's assassin, Skarlet. It just so happens that you were here... You, who I personally invited to the tournament, just to see if you could reach the power your father could not... It only makes sense that you could achieve such power through the assistance of that blundering Thunder God. And now that you have reached your true power, and you have given me the means to free Skarlet..."

Shang Tsung reveals his hands, still wet with Kaito's blood.

"Let us have the first match of the new tournament, here and now! Earthrealm against Outworld!"

Shang Tsung touches his hand to the temple grounds, spreading Kaito's blood. From the cracks seeps up a bubbling pool of living blood, which eagerly swallows Kaito's blood, adding it to itself.

Skarlet bursts from the pool, relishing the taste of fresh blood.

"I will taste more of your blood! I will bathe in it!"

Shang Tsung chuckles to himself as he steps back. "When she feasts on your blood, I will dine on your soul, and your power will be mine! Let the tournament begin! FIGHT!"

Skarlet lunges forward!

See if you can maneuver her into stabbing and absorbing the alcohol bottle he have hidden. If we're lucky it'll cause her to lose cohesion and have trouble keeping herself together.
If it seems like she won't be baited into it, or if she does stab it and then withdraws before it's all gone, drink the rest. Hopefully by raising our blood alcohol content, if she absorbs more blood from us she'll absorb the alcohol too, removing our drunkenness and passing it to her.

Once she's good and drunk, that's when we start wanting no trouble and kick her ass. Hopefully she doesn't know Drunken Boxes.

She slides beneath his feet and pools behind him, whereupon she reforms and emerges, still drunk as a skunk. She attempts to attack him, managing to slash his back, but all this accomplishes is her getting more drunk on his blood.

She falls back, giggling a bit.

"You know, you're pretty fun when you stop being uptight. Shouldn't let the old bastard tell you what to do."

Kaito laughs as well, plopping down on top of her. She explodes, for lack of a better term, into a big puddle of blood, which he shocks. She doesn't seem to get back up or reform afterwards; he appears to have knocked her out.

Kaito rolls over onto his back, covered in blood that is somewhat his own but mostly hers.

"This has been a... a really weird day, hasn't it," he mutters to himself.

Shang Tsung stands up from his seat. "I have had enough of this foolishness. I will finish you myself!"

At that moment, the counter-magic spell that Turana had been building up is unleashed. The dark chains holding her shatter as she spreads her wings, turning to face the shadow priest and blasting him with bright beams shot from her eyes.

As Shang advances upon Kaito, the sphinx leaps down from the balcony above and gets between him and the sorcerer. The sorcerer looks at her, sensing her magic.

"Perhaps we will one day see which is more powerful; a sphinx or a sorcerer," he muses. The shadow priests holding Sareena and Tortek vanish into the shadows, taking their captives along with them.

Shang Tsung strokes the beard on his face. "I really have wasted too much time here... the Emperor is waiting. I have a tournament to run, after all."

A portal opens up behind him and he strides through it. The portal closes behind him.

Turana turns and places her paws on Kaito, shaking him. "Kaito! Kaito! Snap out of it! They've taken our friends!"

Kaito pulls himself close and snuggles into the sphinx's soft fur. She sighs as he begins to snore, and grows large. She picks him up with a paw and gently holds him as she spreads her wings and flies off, heading eastwards.

====

Kaito awakens the next morning with a terrible headache, but alive and mostly healed. Turana lounges nearby, having used her magic to heal him and set up the camp.

Kaito looks around and nearly jumps up in fright as a tree stares back at him with large, hollow eyes and a twisting mouth.

"This is the Living Forest," Turana explains. "I have heard legends of this place... they say the trees watch and listen."

She brings Kaito up to speed on all that has happened, especially Sareena and Tortek's capture at the hands of Shang Tsung, whom now Kaito has double the motivation to go after in order to free the soul of his father.

Turana has flown around and heard and seen things. Warriors from Earthrealm are in Outworld, battling in a new Mortal Kombat tournament. Merely travelling around would cause one to encounter them.

To the north lies the fortress of Shao Kahn, surrounded by his city-state. To the west lies the mountains, to the south lies the Wastelands, and to the east lies the coast.

"The most likely place Sareena and Tortek have been taken is the dungeons beneath Shao Kahn's palace," Turana suggests.

Kaito decides that he will initially explore the Living Forest; a strange place where he feels as though he is constantly being watched.

Through the mists and over the thick vines, Kaito and Turana venture forth. A sound draws their attention: an explosion, not too far away. Kaito wonders if it was magical in origin--perhaps a battle?

As he creeps closer, he spies a very strange sight: Kano, that Black Dragon from the first tournament, the one he helped Sonya capture--he is free! And selling weapons, specifically rocket launchers and other explosives, to none other than Shang Tsung!

"Well done. You may tell your fellow Black Dragon that I am very interested in your merchandise."

Kano picks up an RPG and fires it for fun, blasting apart a living tree.

Kaito leaps out to confront Shang Tsung, much in the same manner as the as-of-yet-unidentified grey Lin Kuei warrior.

"Shang Tsung!"

Now the sorcerer is truly surprised, but remains calm and confident. "Up and about so soon?" he asks. "Perhaps I can finish you off even earlier than I initially thought."

As Kaito runs closer, a pair of invisible feet plant themselves firmly in his chest and knock him backwards! Kaito shakes his head as Turana runs up behind him. A humanoid, green-clad figure decloaks in front of him, revealing himself to be Reptile!

"Oh, you," Kaito says. "I've beaten you before, lizard."

Reptile hisses as Shang Tsung walks up beside him. "Shall we, then?"

He and the green ninja get into combat stances as Kaito does the same and Turana readies herself.

Kaito attempts to open up with a thunderclap, but Shang Tsung, having fought him the previous day in the guise of his father, knows this trick! The sorcerer quickly launches a screaming fiery skull that hits Kaito in the chest and knocks him down.

Turana rears upwards and lets out a massive roar that shakes both Shang Tsung and Reptile and causes the Living Trees to shudder. The saurian ninja covers his ears and leaps forward, atop Kaito! His fingers elongate to reptilian claws and he begins to hack and scratch at Kaito, who puts up his arms as a defense. Turana spreads her wings and leaps at the sorcerer, allowing Kaito to deal with the lizard.

Reptile takes off his mask and spits a disabling venom into Kaito's face to distract him. Kaito shouts and rubs his face as the lizard limps off into the shadows of the Living Forest and turns invisible, hiding to lick his wounds.

He's out of the fight.

Nearby, Turana raises her paws and creates a bright orange barrier of magic to guard against Shang Tsung's flames shot from his hands. The warrior stands straight. "My name is Smoke. Whatever the Lin Kuei's business with Outworld, my business with the sorcerer is my own. He has information that is vitally important to a friend of mine."

"He's all yours," Kaito says, stepping back from the sorcerer.

Smoke advances closer, but as he nears, they all hear a sound; strange, mechanical and not native to Outworld.

Loud footsteps in the dirt can be heard as an armored figure approaches. This figure is cloaked, but drops it, revealing a tall, robust, mechanical figure covered head to toe in red armor. To Kaito, he looks as though a robot.

His voice is menacing and he speaks through a mechanical filter in his mask. "Smoke. The Cyber Initiative has come into effect. You are to report to the Lin Kuei temples immediately for automation. Resistance is futile."

"These things are well-built," Kaito observes.

"I'll take his front, you take him from behind!" Smoke shouts, turning into a cloud of mist.

Kaito transforms into a bolt of lightning and teleports behind Sektor as Smoke reforms in front of them. Kaito attempts to kick the machine man while Smoke attacks from the front, but Sektor vanishes into the ground in a green technologically-generated vortex, causing the two of them to hit each other instead.

Sektor then emerges from the ground alongside them, propelled by thrusters in his feet, bringing up his hands and punching both of them in the jaws in a double-uppercut. Kaito and Smoke reel from this and Sektor advances slowly, like a Terminator, towards them.

His thrusters flare out and the cyborg falls to the ground, hitting it rolling.

As Kaito hits the ground, he looks up and sees Sektor stand up, but then Smoke comes from above, slamming a fist down against the cyborg's head. Sektor stumbles backwards and Kaito launches another lightning bolt, blasting the Lin Kuei off of his feet and against a tree. Sektor slides down, cracking bark as he does, until he is sitting with his back up against the tree.

Shang Tsung takes the opportunity to flee into the Living Forest, vanishing into a portal. Sektor's circuits kick back into gear and he teleports away, vanishing into a green vortex made using Lin Kuei portal technology.

Kaito gets up after the display of the sphinx's power, who is now very winded and tired. Kaito helps Smoke to his feet.

"You stopped them," he says. "They would have made me into... something I'm not, and should never be," he breathes.

Kaito looks down at Turana and helps her stand. "Shang Tsung got away... but at least we're all alive. My name is Kaito, by the way." He shakes Smoke's hand.

"There will be more time for the sorcerer later," Smoke suggests. "Right now, I need to relocate Sub-Zero."

Kaito blinks a few times in surprise. "Sub-Zero? He survived his battle with Scorpion?"

Smoke regards Kaito with some curiosity. "It is not the same Sub-Zero as the one you may be referring to... I speak of his younger brother. He can explain more, but we must first find him."

"I have captive friends in Shao Kahn's fortress," Kaito explains. "If you could help us, that would be appreciated."

"I owe you, so I will," Smoke replies. "Sub-Zero is likely to head there as well. Let us go."

The three head north, eventually reaching the edge of the Living Forest. Far in the distance, a great city can be seen, and at its heart, a massive stone fortress.

>>40442463
I still think you should get a twitter for this, so you can keep us updated on any sudden changes and shit.

But still, at least we managed one of our goals and saved Smoke. Now we just gotta save Sub-Zero. Then we can avert both of their stupid fates.

I'm still worried about the Battle of Armageddon though. Hopefully we find a way to HE MUST WIN! during MK3.
I'm pretty sure that Sareena saw a vision of the Battle of Armageddon, so we're at least one step toward averting it.
>>
>>40442590

Well, good news is we've got at least seven games to go through before we hit Armageddon, plenty of time to fuck up the timeline until then.
>>
>>40442683
We've already made a pretty big change with saving Smoke. Dunno if we've made any other huge significant changes to the timeline though.

Still, hoping we don't go through seven games. My goal is to get the MK IX ending for MK3 and then have 25 years of hanging out and adventuring with Smoke, Sub-Zero, Turana, Tortek and Sareena.
We'll see how that turns out though, the dice don't like us being cool. lol.

Also, what did you think of us using the Alcohol to fight Skarlet? Did you expect that, or was it a shot out of left field?
>>
>>40442774

Didn't see it coming in the slightest, rolled with it when it started happening, heartily kek'd all the while

Moments like that are why I really wanted to do this, but also timeline meddling. Who knows? Maybe we'll go the MK9 route, maybe we'll go the original route. Maybe even more options will open up and we'll end up going somewhere completely different. There's still plenty of characters from the games and beyond to introduce and interact with.

At the very least if we get through MK2 with everyone alive and on decent terms with Kuai Liang we can show him the Ice Caves map. He'd probably love that shit.

>Truth be told, I don't mind a fuckup every now and then, but yeah, the consistently low rolls were a little hard to work with when I'm not trying to make a fight last forever.

This. On top of that, it's Mortal Kombat and there's always the sense of our character getting murdered if we lose too. But then I feel him winning with no effort sucks too. I want a good fight with the dice swinging both ways for abit, but not lasting to a silly extent like the fight with Rokuro.

Also, please remember to archive the thread!

is it too late to learn magic from turana
>>
>>40443025

I've been thinking about the rolling situation and how to expand on it a bit. Like, having bonuses for certain actions. In past threads I'd give out a +10 or a +5 or something based on context, but I've been thinking of going deeper with the combat. Like, Kaito is more of a puncher than a kicker, in line with the Bloody Hands style, so maybe there'd be a bonus towards that, and I could have a pastebin listing all of Kaito's moves and combos and such.

Of course, whenever anyone in the game rolls, I'm comparing it to the numbers I have on my side, which I raise and lower based on context anyway and keep secret, so maybe that's all unnecessary.

Opinions?
>>
>>40443061

It's never too late, Anon, it's just that Kaito is usually a very busy person caught up in very busy events that leave little free time and magic takes time to learn.

It's not impossible it's just a difficult task.

Though, really, his story had a few subtle holes in it, like him being called away to fight in a tournament, when the tournaments are held once every fifty years, so the timing on that would make no sense.

But hey, Kaito didn't know that.

I also had this pic of Shang Tsung with lightning that I really didn't want to pass up on.

Honestly that might work. Have a list of various bonuses he gets for doing various things and maybe think up some conditions for raising them.

The Pastebin should probably be a set up of his current special move set which at the moment is probably something like:
Lightning Teleport
Lightning Bolt
Lightning Punch
Thunderclap
and Nut Punch.

Maybe even have a small number of the bonuses change if he ever learns another style and switches mid combat. So if Kaito ever learns Drunken Fist and switches from Bloody Hands he'd lose say the +10 to Punches from Bloody Hands and gain +10 to everything while drunk, but take a penalty if he ever uses Drunken Fist without being drunk. As an example.

Also, we ever run into Frost we need to smack some sense into her. Girl is spoiled and arrogant as fuck.

Ermac would be cool though, I'm pretty sure he turned good in the original timeline.

That throws the players off too, because we know out of character that Shao Khan has a habit of forcing tournaments whenever he gets bored.

Hey, Shang Tsung may have rused us, but we got him back by embarrassing the fuck out of him by getting his super sssassin drunk as fuck and then punched him in the junk the next day.

Yeah, actually, he turned bro and taught Kenshi a thing or two about telekinesis, if I'm remembering correctly. His MK:D ending had him help Liu Kang free the other Earthrealm warriors from Onaga's control.

I've been meaning to get around to that, I've had it in mind for a while now.

See I was gonna call that out but I thought you were just dicking with the story like when you used movie canon for earlier threads and I'd look like a continuity nazi.

Glad to not disappoint, Anon.
