The sun has yet to emerge over the horizon of Gemini, but already Lyle is looking through the window with his weapon in hand. Dillon has been speaking to someone over a communicator for nearly an hour, and Jackob has been watching the news, keeping tabs on the events unfolding in the capital district. The smoke still rises into the air from the office building, which has mostly burned down. Fire fighters hover in the air overhead, held at bay by a perimeter of black security trucks. Men in biohazard suits examine the rubble. After several hours the fire brigade is allowed to hose down the smoldering ashes and leave. Jackob has the holo-screen muted while Dillon speaks with his contact, but the headline, which periodically becomes more or less vague, reads “Terror attack on Primatech building: possible bio-hazard forces local evacuation as BFI opens investigation.”

The news anchor speaks silently from within the studio, and the footage itself is from several kilometers away. Police roadblocks cover the streets bellow, stopping all traffic in the area around the building. The anchor turns and the story changes temporarily as the day’s events are reviewed quickly before returning to the lead story, and a ticker quickly lists off the events of note.

“Annual negations with Commonwealth begin tomorrow, 0100 UST aboard Via Maris station. USV Galileo on route to Toliman.”

I wonder if we have the time to send a pod there and deploy some flies.

We already have a Pod in all those places.

We just STILL haven't bothered to see them described yet.

Very interesting to see how the politics evolve from there.

Your hybrids have returned to check up on your growing hive, hidden beneath the waters of the nearby protein recycling plant. The chimera has begun to shed its egg layer as its replacement begins its work.

Above ground, your fly uneasily rises from the dumpster, drifting drunkenly into the air as it gets its bearings. Lyle gives Lee a rough kick to wake him, then drops a pair of cheap vending machine protein bars onto his face.

"Got you breakfast. Had no time to cook, but beggars can't be choosers."

Lee rubs his eyes and looks at the bars. A cartoonish grasshopper marks the cover in a smartly tailored suit and monocle, with the wrapper reading "Jiminy Cricket all natural processed protein bar." Lee grimaces.

"Yes, I told you, I have the guy in charge in custody. The place was all kinds of illegal. Detainment of citizens, human experimentation, unlawful surveillance, the works!" Dillon is almost yelling as he enters the room.

"No, I made sure of it. I acted well within-"
He pauses again.

"Nothing more then usual. Besides, the raid was early in the morning, nobody was out. I was sure to cover everything, as always."
Another pause. Dillon slowly shakes his head in frustration.

"Well then you go over his head, and you contact someone with authority on the matter. You can't tell me you don't want to bust this case. BFI breaking just about every law there is in one damn building, and you're worried about the political fallout?" He begins to pace the room, walking through the holoscreen as it displays the local weather forecast. "Fine, I'll send in the report myself, and I'll haul them in myself, and maybe once I have this sorted out, you can have a chat in front of the security counsel about the proper balance of power!"
He rips the device from his ear and throws it out the window. You feel your nearby fly fall back to the ground after crawling up on a nearby lamp post.

Dillon looks over to Lyle. "Whoever's set this thing up, they have a lot of sway. Even my home office wants to bury it before it can go public." He says as Lee watches.

"That's because it's got at least Secretary Windsor in on the scheme. Probably some of the members of the Security Council too, just to keep the internal investigators away." Lee says as he bites the cricket bar and promptly gags.

"And how would you know that? Did you overhear conversations?" Dillon asks. Lee shakes his head.

"Because the base had BFI and the research division under one roof. Only Windsor can order both of them around."

Dillon counts out on his fingers. "Seamus Alder, Daniel Stevens, Conrad Killinger, Alexis Bachman, Trudy Goldman, and Meursault Bellerose. Why do you ask? I mean we have to fight tooth and nail for our budget but they don't strike me as the kind to pull this kind of stunt."

Lee continues to rub his head. "How many of them are on the Tory side."

Dillon waves his hand. "Killinger and Meursault, but they're the only way we get any funding at all. What makes you think they're behind this?"

"Uh, call it a hunch I guess? I mean, they're all the same party as Windsor, so maybe-"

"Ok, I think you've been reading up on too many conspiracy theories. You don't have anything but coincidences."

"No no! Wait, I remember now. Killinger, he's the guy who sent in the paperwork for my promotion, before I was sent back to G-426 the second time. He's got something to do with it, I know it."

So his judgment isn't really any more useful than our own decision.
>>

Giving them suspected info that we know is fact and is easy to put together as legit with what they now know.
>>
>>39745265
"What if the whole council was in on it? My employer seems to think so." Lyle says. Dillon thinks for a moment.

"And do you trust their source?" He asks. The memory of the conversation runs through Lyle's head.

"Absolutely." He says finally.

"Then we're in some deep shit. Huron deep, and the last place we want to be is Gemini." He takes a seat in a chair beside the bed. "With the negotiations going on the boarder will be on high alert, so BFI would probably know if we tried to run through to Commonwealth space, and most Valen contacts will dump you like an ugly baby when things get messy. They tend to smuggle by working with the law, not hiding from it, so that would be a no-go."

Jackob finally speaks, his tired eyes still on the news screen. "The expanse?" The holo-screen shows the partial gate segments in orbit over Aral. "It's remote, still under developed, and with the shrinking boarders from all the incidents lately, I doubt people would send a ship after us."

"Wherever we go" Dillon says, "I can send out a code green. It's a simple but rarely used protocol. Sends a message directly to the Secretary of Intelligence. Either he sorts it out and we can all go about our business, or you two are right, and we vanish off the grid. I can send it out as we leave the system."

They sit for a while as the first hint of light peeks through the window.

Meanwhile, your space pod in the Toliman system detects movement in the area.

The system is small and unassuming, with a single planet around the binary star. The gas giant Gehenna sits in a slow orbit, with a pair of moons with faint signs of abandoned infrastructure. There is Megiddo, a small planetoid with a faint atmosphere and the ruins of an atmospheric generator and portions of a city, both showing signs of atomic bombardment, and Rhodes, a rocky planet of decent size with similar ruins, although the patterns indicate it was once home to a military fort.

Orbiting the gas giant is a small station, no larger then a corvette, with a beacon labeling itself as Via Maris Station.

Far off in the distance, a tremendous burst of radiation erupts, signalling a ship exiting FTL. The ship begins to move, and the pull of its gravity drive is almost on par with a small moon. As it approaches, you can make out the markings along its hull indicating it as the IFS Thunderchild. It is easily comparable to your battleship hull in size, and it is covered in a dense armor plating, and covered in weapon systems of all kinds. As it accelerates, its warp ring folds together and retracts beneath the thick armor, giving it a more streamlined profile. Its front lacks the disk shape of Union ships, instead it holds what appears to be a solid plate of metal armor, riddled with gun ports that likely mark its many, many spinal mounts. It broadcasts out a signal in Esperanto, odd, given that its name is written across its hull in English.

"This is the Commonwealth dreadnought IFS Thunderchild, any present Union forces report your position under international treaty clause six."

It waits several minuets before repeating the broadcast, then after an hour of acceleration it responds again.

"Failure to respond indicates Union diplomatic presence has yet to arrive. Any present military vessels are now considered hostile due to failure to identify. Any civilian vessels are to vacate the system and will be dealt with by summary destruction."

>>
>>39745567
Judging by the local news coverage on Gemini, you suspect the Union envoy will arrive within the day. The rest of the system, other then the Thunderchild which continues to broadcast needlessly aggressive sounding warnings to empty space, appears completely devoid of life, human or otherwise. The Commonwealth dreadnought is painfully slow, and despite several hours of acceleration you doubt it will arrive at the station in no less then ten hours or more, and the station itself is on the far side of Gehenna, blocking its view for the next seven hours.

>Send 35 flies (about average)

Your pod enters the planet's orbit, and after several jumps to reach the edge of the system, a corvette blinks to the far side of the gas giant with your load of flies. As your ship approaches you get a better view of the tiny station itself. It is dwarfed by even your patrol corvette, and is little more then an office building adrift in space. Fuel tanks and solar panels all of archaic design indicate it is an old structure, likely as old as the war between the two nations. As your corvette searches for a usable docking method you receive a signal from the station via laser.

"So you are interested in the negotiations as well? Excellent, the security cameras are all at very poor angles."

The docking collar extends and the outer airlock opens. Your drones leap into space, diving into the station as your corvette cloaks and retreats back to the edges of the system. Your pod remains within range of the drones, and the local Theseus version speaks over an intercom in the main office near the airlock.

"I arrived here last week with the maintenance crew. They take all kinds of precautions for the meeting, but they distrust each other so much they are forced to outsource maintenance of the station to a third party. It's one of the few government events I have been able to infiltrate. Due to a string of unforeseen networking failures on the part of the usual security company, a new one was hired at the last minuet. Quite fortunate, I am usually unable to access this station."

Your flies scatter into the dark and musty station. Empty offices and dorm rooms indicate the station is livable, although without gravity any humans would have problems with a long term stay. Your flies quickly bug the many offices and hallways, placing themselves in air vents and light fixtures.

Back on Gemini, you watch as Lyle and the others continue to discuss their options.

Any non-hive life, clone or natural, that is implanted with a parasite and is connected to your hive network can be made to mutate into another type of clone. Natural creatures count as a Replicant statistically. Chimeras can pupate to grow or shed adaptations without a parasite, but cannot mutate into a new clone type unless implanted.

Nobody thinks we've screwed with his head enough to lie outright to his best friends, no not even Dillon. "Well either way, we need to do something with our new friends." Jackob says. "We can't just keep 'em tied up in the bathroom. I gotta shower sometime after all."

"We have ourselves an interrogation. After that I guess it's up to you, Dillon." Lyle says, "I have a few new tricks I can pull if you'd like." He adds as your hybrids load up a backpack with parasite drones from your hive.

"Well if we do end up on the run, and this really is as big as your contact thinks, then I'll probably end up burned, so no more official contacts, meaning no way to offload them into a detention facility." Dillon scratches the growing stubble on his chin. "Either we kill them or let them go, but I don't want to be running from BFI with two of their top agents in the trunk, just seems like a bad idea, and killing them would defiantly burn that bridge. It would be a real uphill battle to explain that situation."

"Well we should be making our way back to my ship. We can always just dump them off in the loading bay before takeoff, and the Angel's a good a place for an interrogation as any."

Lee finishes his cricket bar with a grimace and resumes massaging his head. "Actually, I think I'm getting a migraine, anyone have anything for it?" Lyle rifles through his pockets for a moment.

"Got some morphine. It'll hit ya like a jackrunner though, and I don't want to carry you across the city. Unless you start going into shock I'd say it's overkill." Lyle turns back to the others as Lee curls back into the bed. "So what's the plan then? We need a van or a truck to move the two agents. You want to borrow one or get one legally."

Jackob has reclined in his seat, but responds almost instantly. "No paper trail is best paper trail, and we're only heading down a few districts. I saw we steal it."

Putting people into comas is well within the powers of a parasite's drugs. I don't think you need a surgery tank just to make them sleep and dream.

And I wasn't thinking of loyalty-whamming just yet, you're right. I just wanted to copy their knowledge and keep everyone coordinated and tracked.

That would take more effort. But it wouldn't require a specific location aside from them not needing to wake up for a while.

Technically there are regeneration tanks aboard the angel to put people in. They're just the original human models, not organic hive bio-tanks.

Also I just realized everyone will get a hell of a nausea and headache combo when the Blink Drive blinks. Especially Lee.

Your hybrids fan out and comb the area, quickly locating a windowless white van parked in front of a local store.

"I'm telling you, it was huge! Some kind of mutant wasp or something, it had bloody stingers on its forelegs! I hit it with the spray but it didn't even phase it, it just flew off. I bet the stuff in that building was the cause of it, whatever crap they just sat around and watched burn, probably had been dumping it in the water for years, mutating the bees!"

The man in the store is a chubby looking florist waving a weighted electric fly swatter around his head. You recognize him as the man who chased your fly away with a can of toxins, which the hive has since become immune to since the exposure. He is yelling to an exhausted looking man with a spray wand hooked to a tank on his back. He sighs loudly.

"Look, I've been real busy lately. Lots of people around here keep talking about the big wasps, and who knows, maybe it's an invasive species, but if you don't see a nest, I can't help you. I can spray around and give the place the usual, but I can't do anything about 'mutant bees.'"

Your hybrids move up to the van, and your tech expert tears open a panel beneath the steering wheel and in moments the engine starts. The human in the store looks over as the van pulls out into the street and speeds away, and he sprints after it, his shouts of protest vanishing in the distance. He comes to a stop under a lamp post, leaning on it to catch his breath as he curses to himself. He turns to see your fly sitting on the top of a trash can, looking back at him with a blank stare.

"Jesus Christ they are huge." He says as the fly darts into the air.

"You fellas want to drive? I can ask them a few questions on the way."

No, there is too much hive tech there. Don't want to give away our abilities or weaknesses. Theseus should design the place. It should a human-hive hybrid station with Theseus running the human part. Also offer asylum to the ceph. Would need different quarters for the different races. Lee, as our ambassador would live there and represent us in dealings with humans. Ideal location would be somewhere central, so frontier expanse.

>Have Lyle attach your parasites to the two agents

Lyle opens the two bags. Michael and Yune seem semi-conscious. Yune is missing an arm, with a cybernetic plug where the shoulder should be. Lyle lightly slaps them. "Wakey wakey fellas. We're goin' on a quick little road trip and I thought we could play a nice game of twenty questions. Here are the rules, I ask as many questions as I want, and you answer them. How's that sound?" He removes their gags.

"Do you think this is some kind of game? I'm an officer of the Bureau of Foreign Intelligence! You'll never see the light of day again!" Michael spits on the floor of the van and stretches his jaw. Yune simply shifts his weight enough to look to the bucket with concern.

Lyle slowly nods. "Right, I understand, no questions then. We can just skip that part and go right to the answers." He reaches over to the bucket and pulls open the lid. There is a faint smell of sewage and the sound of something squirming within. Lyle looks over to Lee. "Think you wanna look away if you're the queasy type." Lee keeps looking at the bucket.

"I think I can feel them, actually, like tiny whispering. What are they really?" He asks. Lyle reaches in and pulls out the parasite as it writhes in his grasp.

"I told you already. Motivation." The two agents squirm on the floor as they try to crawl away in a panic. "It's also a great health plan, but that's beside the point at the moment." He says as he pulls out a knife. "Now like I said, if you get queasy over these kinds of things, you may want to look away."

Your flies monitor the progress of the van as it drives through the streets. Muffled screams escape the back as it drives down the inter-district freeway.

The drones pull themselves around their new hosts' spines and bite down, connecting to their nervous systems. Lee gags and wretches in the corner as the two agents drift into a coma.

You see flashes of memory and chunks of knowledge. Streams of useless memories and pointless musings. Security codes long since expired, embarrassing moments of poor judgment, the time the milk was left atop the air car after leaving the store. You absorb it all, sifting through them as if panning for gold.

You see a skyline, on the surface of Path. You recognize it well from Yune's memories. The vast metropolis of New Shanghai, a seemingly endless steel and glass jungle that spreads across most of Path's northern continent. Yune's life spreads out before you, and you see him living in the shadow of the old atmo-processor, rebuilt into an arcology in the heart of the city. There were dozens of them across the planet. You watch as he joins the PDF, and is eventually recruited into the Bureau. The first labs are within the arcology of the city, deep in the endless maze of hallways. The first experiments are on animals, but they prove largely useless. The council threatens to pull funding, and Yune steps forward as a volunteer. The process is long, and painful, months of blurred memories and whispering voices, but soon they realize that the Ceph hold a similar capacity, and the lab's focus is redirected. Between budget cuts and project setbacks, the labs are consolidated into a single building and moved to the capital. The heavy population of Ceph refugees makes some things easier, but no matter what they discover, he always feels like he's hardly scratching the surface. He needs to discover more, or the Union itself could be in danger.

You can see the Michael's mind unfold for you as well, a boring and tame life of politics and brown nosing. Pencil pushing and red tape. He likes the structure, the order of a well oiled bureaucracy. A well maintained machine by which wise men can rule a nation. He takes pride in his job, his office space, and his efficiency in his duty. Born and raised on Gemini, he spends his free time walking around the block of his apartment in the shade of the planet above, and watches the shuttles move between them like shooting stars. He likes to count them, and try to guess what they're carrying, or who.

He rises through the ranks of the Bureau, and is eventually placed in charge of the local office. He manages the flow of intelligence, assigning cases to dozens of agents, all watching, listening, a bulwark against the chaos around them. He is eventually promoted, although he doesn't see it that way. He is placed in charge of a laboratory in the city, as well as serving at the whims of the council. There are too few rules for his liking, taking direction directly from the secretary of intelligence, but the implications of the research are well worth it, and the cost of ignoring it are dire. He accepts the position, although he doubts he ever had the option, and he does his duty with diligence.

Simple plan to both put Jackob, Dillon, and Lee into hiding, no matter where they go, and get them implanted:

Complete facial reconstruction. Claim that the Engineer hybrid has the expertise to perform the surgery in the regeneration tanks aboard the Hel's Angel. The same procedure Nikolai used to make Fake Lee.

I suspect the hive method we're actually going to use is more effective and leaves less scar tissue and evidence than the method they used. He had obviously inserted fake irises in his eyes.

Our method also might be faster, it's two days. Dunno how long human surgery takes.

But once they're under they can be implanted easily. Better to put them all under before the first Blink, which would be unpleasant if they're awake.

We could either make it on religha, which I don't like due to it's native populace being such low tech, or we could populate another planet. >>
>>39747459
Dude, we've covered the entire planet and surrounding space with hive structures. In short order we will have fucking CAPILLARY TOWERS stretching from the surface into low orbit.

The two agents twitch slightly as their wounds quickly heal with the faint sizzle of medical paste. Lee wipes a trace of spittle from his chin as he recovers.

"What's happening to them?" He asks. Lyle calmly wipes his knife clean.

"Havin' a chat." He says.

"With what? Who?" Lee scrunches his face from the lingering scent of blood. His gaze is fixed on the two agents, as if he can see the unfolding of their minds, as if he can see you picking at them like a watchmaker poking at a clock, and he looks back to Lyle, his voice stammering slightly."Do the other guys know? About the, uh-" He trails off, lightly pointing to Lyle's chest.

"No. Should probably keep it that way for now." Lyle says simply.

"And the other two guys, are they, like, some kinda pod people or something?"

"Not really sure." Lyle says with a shrug. Lee nods halfheartedly.

"Oh, okay then."

The two sit in an uneasy silence as the two agents twitch on the floor for the remainder of the journey.

The van pulls up into the parking garage beneath the space port. Dillon opens the doors. "Shit man, what did you do to the poor bastards?"

"I gave 'em motivation." Lyle says, shrugging. Lee nods his head quickly in affirmation.

"Well we should hurry to the ship, the van was already reported stolen." Dillon says as he waves his hand in the air at the smell wafting from the van. "I'll go send out the code green, you go ahead and do whatever you wanna do with them, since it sounds like you got them to talk well enough."

Nope, we incinerated all of it, and I assume whatever was left was picked up and torn to pieces by the natives.

Say, we really ought to get in touch with those guys. Anybody up for taking a sage, a warrior, and poet from them for research, and then turning them into hybrids. Their entire religion revolves around attaining a state of mind as close to what they think are our drones'. We could at least throw them a bone and tell them our story and our relationship to the Gardener.

It should be noted that you have already retrieved and archived their memories, and while a parasite alone does not mean the host will act loyally to the hive, it can intervene directly to prevent certain actions, such as divulging certain information, or contacting certain people. Your extensive range of drugs would mean that neither of them would have any memory of what had happened to them since the raid on the laboratory, should you wish it.

Here's the problem.

Yune can be reconstructed from his memories as a clone anyway later. We can always rebuild him. We have the technology.

Then we kill him.

>but I don't see any risk of leaving him alive,

He, Yune, and the Doctor all know about the psionic bug in the alleyway that Yune sensed.

Michael either has to die, or be parasited so that it can prevent him from speaking of it. If the parasite is about to be discovered, we make him go crazy with hallucinations and then poison him or force people to shoot him.
>>
>>39748401
Can we detonate parasites? If no, then I'm opposed to this suggestion.
>>
>>39748338
They will be definitely scanned for bombs and bio-weapons and such before anything and if union finds the parasites they will know there is someone with bio weapons like that and probably start regularly scanning and dna testing their important staff, making it more difficult to use clones to infiltrate them in the future when we have a better opportunity.
>>
>>39748427
We can, yeah. Even if it weren't a voluntary muscle, all it would have to do is stab itself to death and it would dissolve.
>>
>>39748207
>Let them both go
Eh they have parasites, the more spies the better.
>>
>>39748451
Kidnapping the research subject that is most successful makes it look most like it might be a rival researcher poaching from them.

It might make sense for them to dump off middle management once they don't need him anymore.

Looks like
>Kill Yune and let Michael go.

Lyle takes out several of the remaining explosives and sets them along the inside of the van, then leaves with the others to the security checkpoint. As the elevator doors close, Michael wakes up, slowly, and crawls his way from the back of the van as he slowly returns to lucidity.

Lee looks nervously about the check point, although it isn't much to look at. A single gate with the same board looking man behind the ballistic glass booth. Lyle passes his false ID atop a hearty sum of credits. The man looks at the ID, then up at Lyle, eyeing the group behind him, then he wordlessly looks at the credit chip, and the number displayed across it. His eyes grow wide for a moment, and he clears his throat.

"Please visit us again soon, Mr. Forester." He stifles a laugh as he pockets the chip. The rest of them walk through the gate unquestioned as the man avoids eye contact.

-2400 credits deducted from Lyle's account.

The Angel slowly lifts from its docking clamps, and takes to the sky. As it ascends there is a distant rumbling as the van far bellow detonates into a ball of plasma, incinerating anything, and anyone within. Just outside you see a number of police vehicles moving up and around the building as smoke begins to seep up from the parking garage.

The angel makes its way into orbit before the local traffic tower can be alerted to the events unfolding bellow, and it quickly exists Gemini space. The ship continues to accelerate to the edge of the system before vanishing in a blink of radiation.

I think that's all for this week. I'll try to stick around until we 404 for any questions or last minuet voting.
