Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you had a chat with your friends and fought a pack of raptors.

It is currently the 9th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

Lifting your trident, you melt a section of ice on one of the raptors' bellies to allow you a good target. Driving it forward, all three of the prongs stab themselves into the beast's flesh, digging themselves in deep. Black blood begins to ooze from the wounds, even as the creature begins to writhe violently in its frozen prison. You channel vys into your helmet to activate the Sight, affording you a better view of exactly what's going on.

The creature is being rent apart from the inside out. It's soul, at least what you think is its soul, has been split in half and is slowly withering away. It appears to you as a clear crystal roughly the size of your head, sitting in the beast's abdomen. It's shot through with black cracks, though you're not sure whether or not these existed before you stabbed the trident into the creature. With each passing second one piece of the gem will crack off, drifting through thin air for a few moments before vanishing.

It's vys is a stranger thing all together. First off, it appears rotted. It's shot through with holes, and moves through the creature's body like an ooze. Yet the closer the vys is to the point where your trident stabbed into its flesh the more violently it seems to be reacting. At the point of contact the vys swirls violently around the central point, seemingly tearing away at itself as vast chunks separate off, vanishing to nothing with surprising rapidity.

The beast stops struggling after a few seconds, even as the effects seem to persist. You can't see any sign of a 'mind'. Nothing truly seems to be happening beyond the vys tearing itself apart what you think is the soul fragmenting. Actually, could the crystal be the mind, rather than the soul? You assumed it was the soul based on position and general appearance but you suppose you don't actually know.

Eventually the creature's vys is completely worn out and its soul, or mind, has vanished completely. The creature is dead, and you jerk the trident out of its wound. With the second creature, you only stab the prong on the far right into its abdomen, and are find that only that immediately a crystal appears in its abdomen, split down the center. It hadn't been there before you stabbed it. Once the crystal has vanished entirely, its vys dissipates into the atmosphere. Curious. You suppose the far right prong on the trident effects either the soul or the mind.

Cutting the flow of vys to your helmet, you reach into your cloak and draw out the handle of your Shockwave Sword. The gem blazes like a miniature sun, but you simply leech enough vys to return yourself to full strength. Once refreshed, you turn your attention to the woman lying paralyzed beneath the claw of the largest paralyzed raptor.
>Vys Pool: (52/52)

You grab the raptor by the shoulders and, with difficulty, leverage it off the woman. You have to leap to the side to avoid getting crushed beneath its weight as it comes tumbling over, its limbs locked in place. That done, you heal the gashes on the woman's back caused by the beast's claws, a simple task.

She has a character portrait, that means we get to keep her right?
>>
You channel vys, letting it pool in your right hand. Your skin takes on a sickly pallor and chills shoot up your arm, even though you've manipulated the spell to reverse the effects of paralysis rather than cause them. Tapping the girl lightly on the shoulder, you release the spell.

The effects aren't immediate, but they are rapid. They spread from the point of contact, slowly returning her ability to move. She scrambles away from you, or rather from the raptors surrounding you. They're paralyzed, so you aren't particularly worried. That fight didn't last more than a few minutes. The girl's eyes are wide and her breath comes in great, laborious heaves. She's a tiny girl, probably an adolescent come to think of it. Probably not even five feat tall. Her clothes are torn and stained with blood, but you healed her actual wounds.

She seems torn between speaking and bolting, so you decide to break the silence. Speaking in Rhynian, you pose a simple question. “Are you hurt?”

The girl shakes her head, slowly. Good. That means she can understand you. You decide to ask her another question. “Can you tell me what happened to your village, to Khmedi? When did the dragons attack?”

Her eyes dart rapidly between the four raptors surrounding you, frozen in place. “They came yesterday. We hid.” She glances in the direction of the older man's corpse, and her fleeing companions. “My mother, and her friend's family. We thought that we'd be able to escape now, since the creature is celebrating, but these... things saw us. They've chased us all the way from Khmedi.”

You open your mouth to speak, but the girl cuts you off. “Why did you help us? You're a raider.”

(1/2)
>>
>>39641750
The bandits we sold into slavery got a character portrait too.
>>
Your scrunch your brow in momentary confusion, but then you recall Khmedi's stance towards your people. They view you as scum, as raiders. Their only dealings have been with Aghtaki. You're not surprised that she'd be wary of you, then. “Only a small percentage of my people are raiders. Most of us never leave the deserts of Pidjata. You ought not to judge us based solely on the actions of our worst members.”

She doesn't reply, instead just staring at you like at any moment you might drag her off to the auctioning block. You sigh, and ask her another question. “Do you know who Chryssa Avci is?”

The girl nods her head slowly. “Yes, was the mutant. The Head Hunter. Mahzar's wife. She disappeared a month or so ago. The Executioner told us that she was taken by raiders.”

You shake your head. “The Executioner lied, she has been traveling with me of her own volition for the past month and a half. She's not with me currently, rather she's residing at my estate for the time being. Do you know what happened to her husband, to this Mazhar?”

The girl nods her head slowly. “He was sent north with the rest of the city guard, to Polop. It has been besieged by the Elves and the Northerners. The city guard was to join an army forming to break the siege.”

Fuck. He wasn't in Khmedi during the dragon attack.

You push yourself to your feet, glancing towards the monstrous draconic creature on your right before turning your attention once more to the girl. “Why don't you come with me back to my camp, at least until the dragons leave the area? Once it's safe to travel, I'll help you find your mother. If they're fleeing east they'll probably reach either Licae or Anthus eventually.”

The girl nods her head brusquely. “We were going to Licae. I will follow you to your camp, I don't seem to have many other options.”

You step forward, offering your hand to help her up. She hesitates, but ultimately accepts your help. Once you've hauled her to your feet you gesture toward your guar. “Climb on, I'm going to deal with the rest of these creatures. My camp is in the collapsed watchtower to the southeast of here.”

She walks off without a word. You note with some mild curiosity that her facial expressions are fairly limited, much like Chryssa's. The girl also isn't crying, nor does she seem particularly scarred. You suppose Chryssa's blunted affect was a cultural characteristic, rather than a personal trait. As the girl struggles to haul herself onto your guar's back, you turn your attention to the raptors.

Probably a master-level technique at the very least. I also expect it to involve some way to work around the self-image issue water magic is limited by. So I don't think Zahak is ready for it, like, at all.

Hypnosis might work. I havea theory this is also the key to restoring youth.

>get subject high
>have him meditate and focus on his youth
>have him get lost in the memories to the point of forgetting what he looks like in the present
>destroy and rebuild his body while he's in that state

I've had this in my mind for like 50 threads now. Just caught up. It'd definitely qualify as an experiment for vys pool purposes, I think.

Deep trance could momentarily alter self image by detaching subject from current body. make him forget who he is by having him focus on youth. We have a meditation aid and a painkiller potion. Use them along with water magic. Or erode their soul partially to make them forget who, where and what they are. Make them susceptible to suggestion.

You walk up to one of the smaller raptors, summarily stabbing the middle prong into its neck while simultaneously channeling vys into your helmet. Your vision shifts, and you're greeted by the sight of the creature's vys tearing itself apart. Out of curiosity, you channel just a touch of vys into the trident. Immediately the effects of the spell seemed to accelerate, a massive chunk of vys flying off into the ether before dissipating.

Once the creature's vys was gone completely, it would cease struggling against its paralysis. The creature was dead. You'd move on to the next one and stab it with the last of the barbs, the barb on the far left. It wouldn't struggle, and there were no obvious signs that anything was happening at all. Eventually its vys would simply slip away, vanishing into the ambient vys. You can say with some degree of certainty that the middle prong is vys, but you're still not sure which prongs are the soul and mind.

Only two of the raptors remained, the largest one and one of the smaller one which formed its pack. You reach out to the larger one telepathically, just to see if it can speak. Immediately your mind is bombarded by a slew of incoherent noise. The same phrase repeated over and over, from what you can tell. {Alde hau askatu alde hau askatu alde hau askatu alde hau askatu.} There is a pause, and then it resumes more insistent than ever. {ALDE HAU ASKATU ALDE HAU ASKATU!}
(1/2)
>>
You sever the connection, since it seems like that's all the creature is going to say. With a sigh you drape your cloak over the corpses of each of the smaller creatures you killed. With Ricky's help, they slide in easily. The creature still living is a little bit more complicated. You drape your cloak over it, but you can't get it past its legs and tail. Fortunately Ricky provides a solution. His tentacles slide out, wrapping around the creature's torso and legs, and with a sickening snap Ricky tears off the creature's legs. Then he drags in the beast along with its severed limbs.

The largest beast is an even bigger issue, it had its wings spread out just far enough so that it doesn't fit easily into your cloak. Ricky tears off its wings at the shoulder, dragging both of them into your cloak first. Then it tears off the creature's legs, and its tail is well. Essentially, Ricky dismembers the poor bastard entirely.

The little girl you rescued stares at you with an uncharacteristically obvious look of shock. You simply shrug, and walk over to your guar. “Scoot forward a little, would you? I'd like to sit in the saddle.”

The girl obliges after a moment's hesitation and you haul yourself deftly onto the back of the beast. Spurring it into a light jog, you guide it onto the road before turning towards the west. It doesn't take more than a few minutes for you to reach the collapsed guard tower, which Regulus has turned into a fairly nice hovel. He's created a tightly woven mat out of the grass which he's draped over the roof, and he's even created a sort of doorway of the same material. It's not exactly sturdy, but it's functional. You don't see him anywhere, but you assume he's inside.

You help the girl off your guar before dismounting yourself. You leave the guar to wander the area, since they're not exactly known to run off when there's food to be eaten. Before you head for the woven mat which blocks the doorway into the collapsed watchtower, you pose a question to the girl. “What's your name?”

She glances up at you, raising an eyebrow inquisitively. “What's yours?”

You bow, touching the tips of your fingers to your forehead and chest and flourishing one of your arms elaborately. “Mirza Mikhael Abdul-Hakim, Grandmaster Vatis and globe trotting explorer.” Standing up straight, you grin. “A pleasure to make your acquaintance. Your turn.”

The girl covers her mouth to hide a smile, before imitating your overly formal bow. “Aylin Katsaros.” She stands up straight, cocking her head to one side. “I guess I want to be a hunter when I grow up? I haven't really decided. Mostly I just helped my mother around the shop.”

The two of you head into the collapsed tower. She stops in her tracks at the sight of Regulus, mouth hanging just slightly open. You nearly run into her. She blurts out almost immediately. “Why, by the names of all the great Gods and Goddesses which hold dominion over the realms of Man, is that thing standing there?”

Regulus speaks before you're able, actually replying promptly for once. “I am the third edition, thirteenth revision of the Regulus personality. You may simply call me Regulus. Who are you?”

(1/2_
>>
>>39643550
I think you need to go to bed.

She backs into you, seemingly terrified of the construct. You speak in what you hope is a soothing tone. “Relax, he won't hurt you. Honestly, he's proved very trustworthy so far. I mean, he attacked me when we first met but those were different circumstances.”

Oddly enough your words don't seem to help very much at all. The girl, clearly panicked, replies. “My mother told me that creatures like him were the reason Rhynia fell, they garnered too much power and started killing all the humans.”

Regulus speaks once more before you're able. What's his deal? Usually he's incredibly slow. “That is ridiculous. Until a few days ago I was kept in stasis in an abandoned facility to the south. It is physically impossible for me to have caused the fall of Rhynia, if Rhynia has indeed fallen.”

She at least steps out of the doorway, allowing you to get inside the relative safety of the collapsed watchtower. You reach into your cloak, extracting the scrying prism as Aylin presses her back against the wall, apparently terrified of Regulus. You ignore her, instead sitting down with your legs folded beneath you and the prism sitting in front of you. Channeling vys, you focus on your memories of Mazhar. You recall his treatment of you at Khmedi's gates, his attack in the streets, the fight in the alleyway, and all that Chryssa has told you.

You feel your consciousness forced out of your body, and carried far to the north. You find yourself staring at the huddled form of Mazhar. Around him, the city burns. You hear distant, thundering booms which you don't recognize. They remind you vaguely of the noise your gun makes when it fires. He looks thinner than you remember, his cheeks gaunt, and he seems to constantly shake. He's bleeding from several small cuts on his face.

Corpses surround him, but he is very much alive. As you watch he lifts his arm, revealing a pistol which he'd had hidden in his lap. He pulls the trigger and the gun kicks, a man screaming from somewhere you can't see. He pushes himself up and opens his mouth wide, shouting in a language you recognize as Elven, drawing a sword from a scabbard on his hip as he charges forward. He slices at a short man who seems impossibly muscular, blood spilling from the mans throat even as he moves on to the next enemy.

finally caught up, glad to see you fucks finally jew'd up with the water plan, i stopped reading a couple of threads before that because you wouldn't
>>
maybe y'all are ready to step up the jewing after we get back from this
>>
>>39646492
Maybe.
Maybe we should start politicizing, now that the shekels are about to start flowing in.
>>
>>39647672
i prefer making money and using that money to make us and our family more powerful to doing politics,
i say we start buying up large areas of useless land that won't be useless after we have access to all that water and i also think we should look for a way to restore our family fleet, perhaps by starting up a logging company? and if we restore the fleet or make it even bigger + buying up all or most of the future farmland + taking over the whole or close to whole water market will make our family the most powerful one in the country
>>
So I just realized something. Why have we gone away from wearing our centurion armor? To my knowledge it is better then the armor that just brings vys in from the environment?
>>
>>39648506
>Centurion Armor [STORED]: (+5 Soak Damage, Spell Amplification, Magic Detection (Active), Hazmat Gear (Active), Self-Repairing (Active), Health Improvement (Passive), Boost Physical Attributes (Active), Hidden Effects)

>Warlock Armor [STORED]: (+4 Soak Damage, +2 Attack, +2 Dodge, Passive Vys Gain [2/hr], Passive Health Improvement, Hidden Effects)

Eh, it's debatable which is better. Soma still hasn't updated the warlock armor with all the shit it does as we learned from Varvar's notes.
>>
>>39648731
I am just thinking that the physical attributes are better for the fact that if we start doing melee combat again it would be useful. I actually thought he had already updated the thing.

Didn't we found out about what certain magic going through the armor does. Could have swore we did that in the mine shaft at one point.
>>
>>39648806

Warlock armor does it too. Hold on, I'm a go archive diving now, wish me luck
>>
You pick up the stack of papers relating to artifacts and his experiences with them. The oldest notes are written sloppily, barely legible really. Fortunately the Varistha's penmanship improves as he gets older, and the newest sheets of paper are written in almost perfect script, the letters flowing elegantly into one another. You leaf through the pages until you find what you're looking for, a piece of yellowed parchment bearing an intricate sketch of the Hiacian Armor the Varistha wore, though he's dubbed it 'Warlock Armor'.

You extract it from the pile and read over the various notes he's left in the margins of the page. He's drawn little lines leading away from each separate piece and run down a list of elements and what they do when channeled into that particular piece. The only element he's left off is Metal, though there's an underlined note in the top corner that simply reads 'Metal = Reinforce'.

You look first at the helmet, which according to the notes unlocks 'The Sight' when pure vys is channeled into it. When Water magic is used instead, it results in the ability to breath underwater just as one would on land. Fire results in immunity to poisonous or otherwise unpleasant air of any sort. Nature allows one to 'access surface thoughts: tricky'. At least, that's the way the Varistha put it. You wish he'd expounded a bit further on what 'tricky' entails. Finally, Earth allows one to see through solid objects as if they simply did not exist.

The torso seems to mostly have enchantments related to physical abilities. Raw vys will enhance all of your physical abilities to some extent. Fire will enhance your strength and speed, at the expense of stamina and mental coherence. Water will allow you to more easily bend and flow around attacks, but seems to detriment one's strength and physical toughness. Earth is the opposite, it allows one to whether even the most powerful of blows, but you'll be hard pressed to move an inch while channeling Earth magic. Nature doesn't seem to do anything, unfortunately.

The boots seem to have paired enchantments, a note in the margins mentions that you can't channel vys into one boot without channeling it into the other as well. The gauntlets and pauldrons are likewise paired. The enchantments for both are fairly similar, the only difference being the delivery of the attack. Channeling fire will wreath either your boots or gauntlets in flame. Channeling water will freeze whatever you strike. Channeling Earth will rapidly erode whatever it is you touch. Channeling Nature allows you to more easily manipulate the movements of plantlife.

The greaves don't seem to do much of anything, unfortunately. Presumably Metal magic channeled into them will still result in them being reinforced, but other than that the Varistha didn't remark on any effects when combined with other elements.

To some degree enlightened, you set that sheet aside and instead pick up a stack of papers which all seem to relate to the nature of an enchantment. You see a number of runes written on the page, though you've little context for what they might mean. The Varistha didn't seem to know either, he's just written a note in the margins of the page which reads “Strange script, perhaps Ancient Dwoveth? Found on blade of Elven tribal's sword.”

So yeah, we should probably field test that shit while we have it on.

El es are being united, dwarves are invading and the dragons have returned. Politicians are useless now. Military or mercantile is the way to go.

Fucking musclegirl fetishists, man.

Considering things are going tits up real fast in the setting, mainly due to our incompetence, we should really see about getting an Anti-Dragon Cannon/Laser up and running.

>>39649514
we still have that map of Rhynian facilities right? we could start searching them for something Anti-air but we should also do >>39647791

I think it is a good plan to push for, hopefully we can get more people behind it.

My vote's for enchanting. armor that excludes/destroys fire. Weapons that erode flesh like our gauntlets do when we channel earth through them. We have artifacts that use those runes we can reverse engineer. We just need to meditate/experiment with our equipment. I mean, even if they don't have visible runes on them, we can view their reality lattice things we mess with when we finalize our enchantments. Those had runes on them, which we pulled out and replaced.

I'm telling you guys, enchanting a best. If it were up to me we would focus on that as soon as we finish our metal meditation at the beginning of the next session.

Fuck man that is brilliant. Enchant our armor to make it it fire proof/nullifying to fight dragons and shit, with a paralyzing enchant on the hands to stun lock em/rot their flesh. 10/10 would follow to the ends of the earth.
>>
>>39650234

Wait, nobody seriously thought of this? Mik himself said several times he'd like to examine the shit he acquired, like the triden which has the runes for mind, vys, soul and destroy/poison/something like that.

I thought you guys were neglecting enchantment because of a shitty sense of priority, not an inability to put two and two together.
>>
>>39650354
I am sure people have thought of this, I just never caught a live thread since the first couple, and basically skipped over every post till I saw Somas in the Archives, so any theory crafting/discussion was lost on me.
>>
>>39650128
>I'm telling you guys, enchanting a best. If it were up to me we would focus on that as soon as we finish our metal meditation at the beginning of the next session.
I think you mean meditation of Vys meta.
>>
>>39650417

For what? You really think you can use manipulate vys on a dragon? With its magic resistance and deep vys pool?

I personally think we have enough offensive capabilities and need to work our way out of the 'glass cannon' tier.

>>39650396

I don't blame you. Reading those "discussions" gave me cancer.
>>
>>39650128
>>39647791
there's no reason why both can't be done, except for time but that can be solved by including others in our efforts, like telling our father about the plan and having him and maybe someone else do much of the legwork in the background so that we can focus more on the armor
>>
>>39650354
People here always had shitty priorities.
>>39650512
>For what? You really think you can use manipulate vys on a dragon? With its magic resistance and deep vys pool?
You do realize you can use Vys to remove someone's Vys pool. Not to mention it would take nothing short of Elaudian Steel to effectively protect us from a fully grown dragon.
>>
>>39650606

We do have elaudian steel armor. Darzi isn't using hers. It's in the cloak IIRC. Just need to recalibrate it to us instead of her. Should've asked Hayes. Damn.

Also? Leech removes vys too. If you want to improve our vys-draining capabilities, speed or destroy would be a better choice. I'll bet they're cheaper and easier to use as well, since vys is a complex effect (or meta, I forget) like time and permanency, whereas those destroy and speed are moderate.
>>
>>39650795
>Leech removes vys too
I didn't say remove Vys I said remove the Vys pool. Know the difference retard.
>If you want to improve our vys-draining capabilities, speed or destroy would be a better choice.
>Destroy
You have no idea how this one works do you? Destroy only destroys vys when paired with the vys meta. And when it is it wipes them from existence.
>>
In Bradcraft 2, what mod causes the round trees and particles on leaves? That shit reks my frames and I'd love to have them back.
>>
>>39650880
Yes, destroy vys was stated to be able topermanently delete all magical ability if one is careful with it. How is that relevant? We aren't Aang, we've no use for that.

Enchantment still a best, we can totally protect ourselves from dragonflame with fire magic. We have the vys pool for it.

There is still better ways to spend those two meditation sessions. Metal for sanity. Nature for diploing the dragons. Studying the tesseractprism to learn some potentially devastating runes.

Vys is nice to have. But it is not a best.
>>
>>39651150
>Enchantment still a best, we can totally protect ourselves from dragonflame with fire magic.
But what will protect us from the dragon themselves? There is no perfect defense and if there was it would have been abused to hell and back by the old empires.
And you do realize that Vys is likely to allow us to suppress a dragon magic resistance but it's not like that matters right?
>>
>>39651150

Oh, and an additional theory I've had before I forget: A person who's had her vys pool removed was said to become all zombie-like, devoid of will. Remember the Shazade? The militant one we saw being zombie-like, all emotionless and shit?

And also remember how we were meditating in El-Amin and we saw all the normal souls with two standing out, one green and one gray and lustreless? That gray soul was where the palace was.

So yeah. Shazade swordswoman, who is currently in prison because of what we told Kadir, totally got her soul raped. I bet she was used as a puppet by a powerful someone. It is too bad we never got to interrogate her, she's probably dead by now.

>>39651252
>Vys is likely to allow us to suppress a dragon magic resistance

What makes you think that? Nothing we know suggests that. It's good to produce ideas and theories, but please try to base them on something we learned IC.
>>
>>39651375
>What makes you think that? Nothing we know suggests that. It's good to produce ideas and theories, but please try to base them on something we learned IC.
Corrupted vys lowers magic resistance so there is likely a way we could use Vys or possible Earth to mess with spell resistance.
>>
>>39651375
Also I should point out that mortal due to having divine essence should be capable of doing similar things to what spirit can.
>>
>>39651375

A thought. Maybe we'll know how to bypass spell res/find a physical weakness once Fulvia examines those corpses we have, if we ask her to. Did we ever tell Rick not to eat them? Shit, he better not be susceptible to corrupt vys.

>>39651421

>Corrupted vys lowers magic resistance

Says who?

Earth may indeed be able to corrode spell resistance, what with it being the debuffing school of magic and all. We're merely an apprentice though, we'll need to meditate once to reach Vatis level for that to become plausible, maybe (we may need expert or master instead). Still not enough to make it a priority.

>>39651473

The difference between mortals and spirits is that mortals have divine material in their souls only, whereas sprits are made of divine jism entirely. So yeah, probably.
>>
>>39651580
>Says who?
Soma this thread.
>Earth may indeed be able to corrode spell resistance, what with it being the debuffing school of magic and all. Except if a dragon could which would render any armor we try to use against them useless.
>>
>>39651992
Well technically last thread but you know what I mean.
>>
>>39651992
At that level, they might as well go for eroding our flesh directly. It would certainly be easier than magically destroying an artifact from afar. Again, this is what metal is for. It reinforces our mind, our body, and even our armor. Ergo, it takes priority.

Grandmaster Earth potentially has huge bullshit levels, moreso than fire and water if you ask me.

Also, the reduced magic resistance due to them being corrupt dragons doesn't mean something with corrupt vys automatically having less magic resistance. It might be because they're emaciated, with cancerous holes all over their body, and probably reduced capabilities in other forms as well.

So the way I see it is that whereas a humanoid dies within days from corrupted vys, dragons survive due to their magical nature, but at great cost, like with constructs and AI as we've seen in Longia.
