October 18, UC 0084.

You are Captain Dominic O'Hara, and this morning you decided to take a day off. After a quick breakfast aboard the Nagato, which is still docked at Londenion, you found your way to Mineva's quarters where Haman has offered to spend her day tutoring the young daughter of the Zabi family.

“Why did my family lose the war?” Mineva asks suddenly, catching Haman off guard.

After a moment of obvious discomfort, Haman collects himself. “The Zabi family's loss was inevitable.”

“Why?”

“Same as the Third Reich and the Empire of Japan, they were like-minded individuals who deluded themselves into thinking their position of initial strength was sufficient to defeat an enemy with more raw resources and more manpower,” Haman explains. “Battles may be won or lost in a few crucial moments, but wars are often decided before they begin.”

“Then why didn't they stop the war?” Mineva presses, her tone almost one of resentment at her family's history.

“Executioner's dilemma,” you reply.

Haman nods in agreement. “Three billion dead is something you cannot hide from, even after surrendering. I suspect Kycilia of all people realized this early, and supported her father's late bid for peace. Gihren, however, refused to follow his father's lead.”

“But why?” Mineva asks again. “Why would he fight for the wrong side even when he couldn't win?”

“I don't know,” Haman muses. “I suppose you'd have to ask Titans and the Zeon remnants, because it sure doesn't make sense to me.”

“Who killed them?”

At that question, Haman suddenly frowns, as if remembering something unpleasant. “Garma Zabi was almost certainly betrayed by Char Aznable, and it's likely Kycilia met a similar end.”

“Mister Char did?” Mineva asks, seemingly surprised. “I thought he always seemed so nice!”

“Degwin Zabi was likely responsible for the death of Char's father, Zeon Zum Deikun, and was definitely responsible for the purge of Munzo's remaining Deikun faction,” Haman explains. “And Char was never really a kindly man, though his heart was sometimes in the right place.”

“I thought you used to like him?” Mineva frowns. “Like a lot?”

“I did,” Haman admits, noticing as Natalie Bianchi cgently shuts the book she has been quietly reading to this point. “There was a time where I was obsessed with him, and a time where I hated him for ignoring my feelings towards him. Now, though, I pity him.”

“Why's that?” you ask her, surprised at her sudden change of tone when asked to talk about the man she used to hate.

Haman shrugs. “I suppose it's because a man who has lost his meaning is the most pitiful thing there is.”

Crossing the room to sit with Mineva at her desk, Haman gives her student a mischievous grin. “Now, why don't we talk about something less depressing. I hear you've been writing letters to that boy on Industrial Seven?”

Mineva blushes, and immediately starts denying knowledge of any letters, of any icky boys, and she even goes so far as to deny having any memories of being on Industrial Seven.

“Now, Lady Mineva,” Haman mock scolds. “You know better than to lie to me of all people. What was his name again? Banana Jerk?”

“Banagher! It's Banagher!” Mineva insists in annoyance before quickly realizing her mistake.

Natalie opens her book again, and resumes reading.

There's a terminal down here, and in this case you may be able to use it to help Haman tease Mineva. The beginnings of an idea blossom into an honest-to-god plan as you call the bridge.

"How may I direct your call, Captain?" Reiko asks in a playful tone.

"Patch me through to Matsunaga aboard the Argama, would you?"

"Working on it, sir. Please hold." To complete the effect, you hear Reiko singing an impersonation of hold music on the other end of the connection.

Haman shoots you a surprised glance. "Matsunaga? He's alive?"

"You betcha," you reply. "The White Wolf himself."

"Got him!" Reiko reports.

"Matsunaga," you greet the grizzled man's image as it appears on the screen in front of you.

"Captain O'Hara! To what do I owe the pleasure?" he replies cordially.

You can't help but grin at him... well, "wolfishly".

"I have someone I'd like you to meet," you tell him. "Lady Mineva?"

Mineva walks up behind you, turning a suspicious eye towards the stranger you're introducing her to.

"Who's this?" she asks.

"Shin Matsunaga," you nod, before gesturing to Mineva, "meet Mineva Lao Zabi."

Matsunaga's eyes widen, then noticeably soften as your words finally hit home for him. You've just introduced him to the daughter of the man he'd served faithfully during the war, the child he left behind when he died in battle.

"Lady Mineva?" he repeats in awe before locking eyes on you. "May I come over to your ship, Captain?"

You nod. "I was hoping for exactly that. I fear Miss Mineva's heart has been stolen by a young rapscallion from Industrial Seven, and she could use a talking-to from her godfather." Mineva glances at you in shock, before whipping her head back around to stare at Matsunaga again.

Matsunaga suddenly puts on a stern face, clearly getting into the role as he strokes his beard. "I see... so Lady Mineva is growing up at last. Truly remarkable how quickly they do it. I suppose she has many questions about her father?"

You merely nod.

"Very well," Matsunaga growls, raising his bushy eyebrows at Mineva as his lips curl into a grin. "I will be over in about a half hour or so, once I clear it with my C.O."

"I look forward to finally meeting you, Miss Mineva."

"L-likewise!" Mineva gulps.

"He seems like a nice man," Haman muses as the line cuts out.

You nod. "A bit stern, maybe, but he has an honorable feel to him that I like."

"Reiko, you still there?"

"Always," she replies. "Who do you want to talk to now?"

"Please put through a secure connection to Pezun Base," you reply calmly, drawing a shocked stare from Haman and some chatter from the rest of the bridge crew that's plainly audible in the background.

"Are you sure? Pezun Base?" Reiko repeats.

You nod. "Pezun, aye."

"Who should I say is calling?"

"Tell them the Red Wolf of Odessa wants to talk to the Young Nobleman of Iron," you instruct Reiko. "That ought to get his attention, don't you think?"

"Were you both at Odessa?" Haman asks as Reiko puts your call through.

You nod. "We were. Never met the man, but I've heard his reputation, and he's probably heard mine. So I figure that's the best place to start."

After several minutes, you hear Reiko report back to you.

"I've got Pezun on the line, Commander Tachibana is standing by."

"Patch me through."

On the screen is a young man in a Titans uniform: you'd put his age somewhere in the mid to late twenties. A little older than Carya and Catrina, in other words, but not as old as Karen. His appearance is more lackadaisical than you anticipated given his nickname, as opposed to your more 'grizzled' features. Where your mess of red hair is at least cut to regulation, Tachibana's black hair is longer, flatter, and forms a bit of a mullet in the back. His posture is fairly slack as well.

But his eyes: that's where you can tell he's taking you seriously.

"Commander O'Hara," he greets you stiffly, as a Zeon aristocrat would greet a grease-stained mechanic. "To what do I owe this dubious pleasure?"

"It's Captain now, actually," you correct him. "And I get the distinct impression we've somehow gotten off on the wrong foot already."

Tachibana scowls at you. "A traitor calls me in the middle of my lunch break, and you expect me to be cordial with him? I'll ask you one more time: why are you bothering me?"

>Because we're about to become a major pain in each others' sides, and I know nothing about you.

"So I figured we're both honorable men, and I may as well just ask you myself."

Tachibana shakes his head in disbelief. "Under what definition of honor does treason fall?"

"I wouldn't look at it as treason," you suggest. "We were merely supporting Titans when it seemed their cause was just. Now that the gulf between their goals and "justice" has become clear, we've withdrawn that support."

"Our fight has never been with Titans, or the Federation, or even with Zeon," you conclude. "Our fight's with the worst elements of humanity that are present in each."

Tachibana takes a moment to think over your words. "You seem to honestly believe that," he mutters. "Forgive me if I doubt your sincerity, I'm too used to seeing men like us whose actions and ideals don't line up."

"Why shouldn't I simply hang up?"

It takes you a moment to come up with something he'll actually listen to.

"Because you know my reputation," you tell him. "I count former Zeon, EFSF, and Titans among the ranks of my crew, because I always try to give my enemies a fair shake. That's exactly what I'm doing for you."

At least two of the rolls have to beat the DC. So long as one of the posts do that it's a success. If all of them do it's a critical success. So I Tachibana might like us a lot, now.
>>
>>38521372
Works by counting the number of rolls in each of the first three votes that meet or exceed the target number. Two passes is a success, three passes is a critical, one pass is a failure, no passes is an extra degree of failure. The post with the most passes of the first three in this case was two (all three posters succeeded, in fact), so that is counted as a regular success.

Also, I just realized there's another Gundam quest on the board right now, with a Newtype by the name of "Ohara". Interesting.

"Consider my interests piqued," the messy-looking Titans officer replies, leaning back into his chair. "You offer me something, I'll offer you something. Deal?"

You nod. "One of your rivals is from Jupiter. It's likely he was sent here by Crux Dogatie of the Jupiter Empire to sow discord prior to a major military operation."

Tachibana raises an eyebrow at this news. "Oh? And how did you reach that conclusion?"

"I have a 'friend' inside the Federation," you explain. "A financial backer of the current administration you may have heard of: the Vist Foundation?"

Tachibana's features tighten. It's hard to tell from here without feeling his emotions, but it seems you've made him nervous. "You have dangerous friends, Captain. For my part, I will tell you this: I approached the Instructor Corps here on Pezun for two reasons. The first of these is that they have developed their own line of Mobile Suits called the "Xeku" series. They're both fast and powerful. I had hoped to use them to counteract the machines Papsmear is rumored to have developed."

Your initial snicker quickly turns into a laugh. "Sorry, I thought I was the only one who called him that!"

Tachibana gives a snort of laughter himself. "Of course not. It's too absurd a name to NOT make fun of."

"My second bit for you is this," you continue. "The Federation's estimates for Earth's agricultural output after the impact events in the last few years are bleak. They haven't released the figures yet, but it could amount to a loss of half the yearly yield."

The Young Nobleman lets out a low whistle. "I want to see those reports. If they're true, that means we need to wrap up this fighting in a hurry. Prolonged warfare will only compound the problem, especially in the colonies."

"And your bit?" you press. "What was your second reason for going to Pezun?"

"They hold truer to the Titans' founding charter," he replies. "They want to end the insurgency, not pursue their own power."

"And I take it you fall into the same mindset?" Haman asks sternly.

Commander Tachibana quickly places Haman's face, no doubt because he's seen the address she and Artesia gave before the Federation Assembly. Ballsy of him if he has, Titans issued an explicit order that made such an action a court-martial offense.

"Miss Karn" he greets your teammate politely. "As it happens yes, I do share that mindset."

"Drop the act," Haman insists, "you're not impressing anyone. What do you intend to do if you beat Pappy and Cue-Ball?"

"It's simple. I plan to keep true to Titans' mission as a police force with offensive capabilities," he explains. "Not that different to your own band of well-meaning vigilantes, but more legitimate."

He then puts his hands in the air in mock resignation. "Oh dear, I seem to have gone out of turn. Tell me something interesting, Red Wolf?"

"Fair enough," you agree. "We attacked the Newtype lab in Leipzig a few days back, destroyed a Titans-developed mental attack weapon, and rescued a cyber-Newtype they were trying to brainwash into piloting it. It's my intention to shut down the other Newtype labs by any means necessary, so you'd be wise to stay out of my way."

"I heard about that, actually," Tachibana admits. "To thank you for the warning, I'll offer you this: stay clear of Pezun. The Instructor Corps has lost three of its best students out of the last batch of advanced trainees, two of whom were at Leipzig. Those were Mouar Pharaoh and Jerrid Messa."

"Both of them may have survived," you tell Tachibana in response. "One of my pilots saw Pharaoh bail out, and Jerrid went missing after he was ejected from his machine."

"I see," he nods. "Anything else we need to tell each other?"

Sadly, this is the point where the stories you can tell him start to get progressively more outlandish and sensational. Though he's followed you this far you still don't think he's ready to know the full extent of the truth just yet. If you were in his shoes, you'd probably think you were a lunatic... in fact, you're not entirely convinced you haven't gone insane at some point along the way.

"I've seen things," you tell him, "that you wouldn't believe. But those are stories for another day."

Tachibana nods. "At some point, I may just "accidentally" send you some information. Until then, we'll stay out of each others' ways. Sound good, Captain?"

"That's fine," you agree. "Best of luck."

Matsunaga's going to be here in a few minutes, and you wouldn't want to miss that. But there's something that's been bugging you for a few days now that you may as well deal with, seeing as you have the opportunity.

As Haman helps her young charge with some math problems, you contact ALICE.

"Captain? I suppose congratulations are in order on your promotion?"

"Thanks," you nod. "You're actually the first to mention it."

"What can I do for you?"

"In my personal files there's a locked document marked "KOWEN BRIEF". It contains an overview of our investigations into Hymem's involvement in Operation Stardust, Anaheim and the Vist Foundation's affairs, the original Federation Charter, and the secret reports on future agricultural yield."

"I need your permission," ALICE tells you.

You type a short string of numbers into a command window for her. "They're Carya's measurements. I want you to send this document to Karen for her approval. Once she's given her approval, I want to send it to Kowen."

"Roger," ALICE responds before disappearing back into the Nagato's systems.

A few minutes later, there's a knock on the door, and Mineva gulps loudly.

"Come on in, Matsunaga," Haman calls in a sing-song voice.

Matsunaga bows his head slightly as he greets Haman. "Ma'am. I knew your father during the war. If I may say so, it's good to see you take after him."

Haman brushes some of her pinkish-red hair out of her face, apparently dismissive. "Thank you, I suppose. But you're here to see Mineva, right? Here she is."

Behind her brusque manner you can tell being likened to her father wasn't something she expected, and she's not sure how she feels about it.

"So, you're Dozle's daughter?" Matsunaga chuckles to himself. "Thankfully you don't resemble him very much, but I can see some of Zenna in you."

"You knew my parents?" Mineva asks, her curiosity getting the better of her as Matsunaga settles into a comfy chair. She sits next to him, craning her neck to look up at him.

Matsunaga nods. "I did indeed. I had the honor of fighting beside your father on several occasions. He was a good man."

"A good man?" she repeats. "But he was a Zabi. He helped start the One Year War! How could he be a good man?"

"It's possible for good men to be wrong," Matsunaga replies thoughtfully. "We thought we were doing the right thing at the time, and your father died thinking he was doing the right thing. Perhaps it was my misfortune to outlive him long enough to see how wrong we both were."

This isn't what you were expecting. This is getting very personal, very quickly. It almost feels wrong to listen in on Matsunaga's reminiscences on his dead friend, sitting with the daughter he left behind.

On your way out, you pull Haman aside and give her a quick kiss on the forehead.

"He'd be proud," you reassure her. "Don't think about it too much."

She gives you a little squeeze before you turn to step out of the room, as Matsunaga begins to explain to Mineva how her father died. Yeah... that was the right time to excuse yourself.

In your own quarters you send a quick message to Cima, asking her where she'd like to meet for the drink you'd discussed with her earlier. While waiting for a reply, Carya joins you. Her hair is still wet, so you guess she just came back from a bath.

"What's up?" she asks. "I felt someone else in Mineva's quarters as I passed by."

"Shin Matsunaga came to see his goddaughter," you explain. "Their discussion turned fairly private in short order."

Carya seems to pout a little. "He's here but he's too busy to drink and fight with us?"

"Lame," Catrina mutters, though they both seem to understand the reason you're all keeping out of their affairs for now.

"You need to make this up to me somehow," Catrina insists.

A light tone from your computer informs you that you've gotten a response from Cima: she's picked out an upscale bar here on Londenion. Seems classy rather than pretentious, which is a plus.

"What's this?" Carya asks, peeking over your shoulder. "No uniforms? From Cima?"

"Dominic, are you going on a date with Cima Garahau?"

You can tell she's not upset at this, but she's actually rather surprised.

>Not really, no. She seemed like she needed a break, so I'm doing something nice for her. That's all.

Strangely, Carya nods in immediate understanding. “I know how she must feel. Everything to do with Zeon aggravates me and Catrina, and Cima deals with their shit every day."

Carya glances over the email a second time. "I've been meaning to give her a chance," she muses, "and while Cima said not to come in uniform she said nothing about coming alone."

Well, you ARE all going to be working together for the foreseeable future, and you suppose taking someone else with you makes some strategic sense. Plus, it's not like this is a date or something.

"Or get some work done," Carya shoots back at her sister. "You remember, work? That thing we sometimes do?"

"Yeah, fine, we'll look over those reports on the Tera-S'ono Audrey sent you," Catrina groans. "But promise me that after that we'll do something interesting?"

"I'm sure we can find something," Carya replies tersely... you're not sure you've ever heard this tense an argument between the two sisters before.

When you arrive at the speakeasy, it strikes you as a bit early in the day to be drinking already. But then again, given the circumstances you've been in for the last few months, you're less and less inclined to care about when and what you drink.

Inside the bar you find a long counter of dark stained hardwood, with the typical high stools and booths trimmed in leather. The ceiling is set with deep geometric patterns, and illuminated glass blocks here and there add to the glow.

Cima is sitting at the bar in a red dress, seemingly ten years younger than the last time you saw her. She notices you as you take a seat next to her.

"I'm half surprised you're alone," she muses. "I suppose that means you're taking this seriously."

"You don't approve?" you ask.

Cima shrugs. "I'm merely surprised, as I said."

You let the bartender, who's apparently well-known in this side for his finely-honed skill, pick your drink for you: Foxdenton sloe gin, from Earth, mixed with a splash of ginger ale instead of tonic, served with a slice of root ginger as a garnish.

You usually hate gin, but after a tentative sip you decide that the bartender's renown isn't for nothing. It's actually quite good.

"So," Cima asks, nudging you with her shoulder. "How have you been amusing yourself?"

"Well, I got shot," you offer. "That was fun. Wrecked a Newtype lab, rescued one of their test subjects before they brainwashed her into oblivion, ruined Titans' plans. You know, the usual."

"I see," Cima replies, crossing one leg over the other and rotating her seat to face you. "Sorry you got shot. Did you find anything else interesting in Leipzig?"

"A mind control weapon," you reply "Blew it up, of course. You're wearing a dress."

"I was aware," she nods, almost relieved that you did indeed notice that detail. "Not too flashy?"

"Nah, you look nice."

"Thank you."

You nod. "Sure. You may also want to know I called the Nobleman of Iron this morning for a nice long chat."

"Oh?" she asks, hiding her surprise by taking a sip of her martini. "And what did he have to say?"

"We agreed to stay out of each others' way," you explain. "So I guess it went about as well as you could hope."

There are a few seconds where you each sip at your own cocktail, deep in thought.

"So how bad is it in the Republic?" you finally ask. "I mean you're back on the frontlines, so it can't have been good before you left, but how bad is it really?"

"It's bad" she replies. "Too many of the politicians there are stuck in the pre-war mentality. They still think in terms of "freedom" and "oppression", rather than the cold reality of the situation."

"Which is?" you ask, sipping at your gin.

"That those things can only come if there's peace and stability. Anything else only fuels the anti-Spacenoid camp in the Federation assembly, regardless of how deeply you couch it in ideological terms. And they're too caught up in the notion of their "glorious struggle" to see any other solution."

>That's pretty cynical, Cima.
>And you couldn't convince them?
>They'll learn, eventually.
>If we have our way, reform could come quick enough to spare us a repeat of the One Year War.
>Just relax and enjoy the booze for now.

Or die. Either way, they'll be gone and someone sane can try to make it work.
>>

>Just relax and enjoy the booze for now.
The entire system is about to go to shit soon enough, let's just enjoy the moment.

These people are way too eager to let their sons and daughter die.

"They're politicians. They only see polling numbers and ballot sheets. You get enough people to stage a protest out front of their actual homes, screaming for reform and action, they'll be singing a different tune for fear of losing that cushie job. Hey, don't you have a bunch of commandos milling about?"

Can we somehow bring up the question of where, when and how the heck did she get that swank tiger pelt she has on her ship?
Y'know, the one we always see whenever we spot her on her throne.

"Meh, we'll just threaten to sick Artisia on them in the elections if they don't behave."
>>

And if they're too stubborn to learn (or die), we can always cite them going senile and space crazy.

>Other?
"I guess in the interim, we'll just have to make sure we can relieve the burden somewhat for the next generation. Pave the way and blaze a trail for them to usher a better, more peaceful era."

>Just relax and enjoy the booze for now.
>>

"They'll learn," you reassure her, "or they'll end up getting replaced. All you and I need to do is keep the body count as low as possible until they wise up."

"True, I guess," she agrees.

"More importantly, Miss Garahau?"

"Yes, Captain O'Hara?"

"Where'd you get that tiger pelt I keep seeing you sitting on?"

She gives you an uncharacteristic giggle that almost verges on a cackle... you're not sure whether it's a pleasant sound or not. "Would you believe me if I told you I wrestled it first?"

"Not for one minute," you reply.

"Smart man. A traveling circus was shipping its animals between the Earth and one of the colonies, I can't remember which. Anyway, when we raid the ship one of the tigers got loose and started attacking my men."

Cima takes a sip from her second martini. "So I shot it dead and had it skinned. I keep it as a reminder that things can go wrong in bizarre ways at the moment you least expect."

"That's... actually kind of cool," you admit. "I mean, not the commerce-raiding, but the story's still cool."

"Well," she sighs, "my life used to be a lot more interesting, Dominic. Can't say I miss all of it, but there were some parts that still stand out."

>It's been nice, but your crew probably needs you back.
>Why don't we continue back aboard the Nagato? I know Carya and Catrina wanted the chance to talk over drinks.
>So... what now?

Seconded. Might as well get the veterans club up and running before any more shit starts hitting the ventilation.

My sides.

And with all the odd things that keep on happening to Dom, unusually appropriate.

"Nothing glamorous about trying to survive out in the void anyway. No matter how much kids claim how fun being a pirate is. You wanna talk about it?"

You people sicken me. She got all dressed up for Domscartes to have fun with him. Not to hang out with a bunch of smelly deck apes and greasy snipes.
>>
>>38527690
>So... what now?
Want to go see a show?
>>
>>38527690
"Why don't we continue this on the Nagato?" you ask. "Catrina and Carya seemed like they wanted to get to know you, and we've even got Matsunaga aboard. Could be fun."

After a moment's contemplation Cima nods, fishing a few notes from her purse. "That would be fine. I had wanted to talk to Matsunaga anyway, find out how the hell he even survived Solomon. What got him fighting beside the man who killed his friend, those sorts of details."

Once the tab has been paid off, you step out and hail a cab, which takes you back towards the dockyards. On the way, something unexpected happens... Cima unbuckles her seatbelt, shifting her way over towards you. Then she leans against you, resting her head gently against your shoulder.

"So," she mutters half to herself, "this is what it felt like to be young..."

And that's all for tonight. Thanks for playing, and the archive's up.

Tomorrow night, questions will be answered, plans will be made, Bright will slap somebody, and something interesting may happen with Cima.

GOD DAMNIT WHY. She got all dressed up too for it. /tg/ went full neutron star dense there.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Here's the thing: Cima doesn't need Dom to have sex. She's an assertive, sexually attractive, and powerful woman, and if that was all she wanted from Dominic things would have progressed so much faster and been so much simpler.

But that's not the "interesting thing" that may happen with her, because sex is a secondary objective at best. It would be a nice little bonus if it happened, but it's not what she's after.

You'll see what I mean tomorrow.

I'm sorry, but I can't help but to have SHADOWRUNS from what you just said.

But I'm still going to look forward to what's going to happen next on Domscartes's Bizarre Space Adventure.

Is it Kamille? He's been lacking in terms of presence despite the fact that THREE Zeta type machines are up and running. I was almost worried the Paprikanus Scipio got to him first.

"Cima, you wouldn't mind if you let Carya's hands and fingers work their magic on your piano? It'll be quite a pleasing experience for you."
