Kimiko, the Shinigami you are acting as a substitute for, who is currently occupying the body of a completely different person while recovering her wounds, has been rather stubbornly refusing to listen to your instructions during her stay at your school. Even though you’ve told her how the person whose body she is ‘borrowing’ should act, she seems to have completely disregarded everything you’ve said, and just did whatever the hell she pleased.

Even though you've told her that it would be best that you aren’t seen meeting face to face at school, she walked straight into your classroom, stopped you from going to your friends, and made you eat lunch with her instead. Well, maybe ‘made’ is too harsh of a word; it’s not like she’s forcibly restraining you or blackmailing you into eating with her. You can leave at any time. You’re just choosing not to.

Maybe it’s because she looks as thrilled as a little kid on too much sugar and she’d be better off spending time under your watch than potentially ruining her fake identity’s reputation. Maybe it’s because she looks so damn happy, and you’re worried that coldly (or at all) refusing her would stomp all over that mood. Or maybe this is making you feel reminiscent of the times you spent with Aiko, whose dead body is cheerfully chatting with you and eating rice and salmon out of your old, pink lunchbox.

...The food in which, by the way, is far better than what you have in your newer, golden one. No, it’s not actually made of gold, but it sort of looks like it is, and that’s cool. You really like this lunchbox. Now if only it wasn’t filled with the most bland rice you’ve ever had.

Paul really went all out on preparing Kimiko’s lunch: a portion of rice shaped into a cute rabbit, salmon forming a fox, small bits of chicken arranged to resemble what you think are tiny bears, vegetables decorating them all with cutesy features... it looks delicious and cute.

...He’s never made lunches this good for you.

You glare at your brother, who, just like everyone else remaining in the classroom for lunch, was curiously observing you and the girl next to you from his seat. He smirks upon noticing your discontent and adjusts his glasses.

You turn back to your food, the equivalent of a bowl of rice, just in a fancy, golden box.

...This sucks.

“...You said something about a Hollow, Kimiko?” You whisper, looking at her lunchbox. The girl glances at her cellphone again, and when she looks away, you steal some chicken with your chopsticks. She notices, but she can’t stop you before it's too late. Tasting something other than rice is a massive relief. Kimiko pouts.

“Why did you do that?” She whines, looking into your lunchbox to maybe try some revenge-stealing, but, well, it’s not like you have anything to steal.

“Don’t dodge the question.” You say, still chewing, taking your time to savor the taste.

“I told you, Clarissa, it’s... not showing up right now, so it’s nothing to worry about. Just eat.” She smiles again.

“If you wanted to have lunch with me, should have just said so,” You shrug. “I don’t mind.”

“You would have ditched me if I didn’t mention a Hollow...”

“Lying’s still not the solution to that. Especially lying about something so important.”

“I didn’t lie...” She firmly mutters, her cheerful expression growing cold.

You spent a few moments eating in silence, probably a first ever since Kimiko sat down by your desk. Feeling the blandness of your meal getting the best of you again, your chopsticks move towards Kimiko’s lunch.

The girl parries with her own pair. You try again, but she keeps it up. A fierce struggle breaks out and doesn’t end until the bell rings, with neither side having actually finished their meals. Kimiko runs off, eating on the move, and you... well, you just don’t finish your plain dish.

The recent massacre in Karakura was ultimately blamed on an earthquake and unstable building foundations. That, or something along those lines, is what you gathered from the surprisingly few conversations relating to it between your schoolmates. Nobody really buys that explanation, and yet no one has a better one. A lot of people skipped school today because their relatives died.

After school, Kimiko said she needed to do more shopping. You told her where the dojo you are heading to is, so that if the need arises, she can find you.

You walk there with Naoko. She doesn’t say anything, and answers anything you try asking her in ways that lead the conversation to a dead end. It’s annoying, so you just stop trying after a while.

As you approach the dojo you see a girl, a couple years younger than you, idly swinging her legs on the roof of the building. You spot a chain attached to her chest - she’s dead.

>Make an excuse to split off for a bit and go talk to the ghost.
>Just move along for now, you’ll find her during tonight’s patrol.

Point of clarification.

Humans normally cannot see ghosts.

Humans with enough juice to see ghosts might not have enough power to see Hollows and Shinigami.

A human with enough power to see Hollows & Shinigami can only acquire powers in unique circumstances while still alive.

Quincy: Humans of a certain bloodline with great spiritual power. Often Archery focused. Spiritual entities slain by Quincy powers are "destroyed" and removed from the balance of the Soul Cycle. There were two major conflicts between Shinigami & Quincy, 200 years ago & 1000 years ago. Though there might be many unaware they are possessed of Quincy heritage; those aware of the power & tradition are extremely rare...especially after Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi's research.

Fullbringers: when a human survives being attacked by a hollow, they are often spiritually scarred. Usually this results from such an attack on the parent of the child before birth or conception. They gain the power to manipulate the souls of objects. With a familiar object or tool, they can transform it into an object reflecting the power of their own soul or that of the hollow what gave their power. This ability is called Fullbring. They can also share and power between on another. A skilled or powerful Fullbringer can steal the power of another.

Substitute Shinigami: we are one. Substitute Shinigami can more easily become Fullbringers after they lose or return their power.

Naoko is a few steps ahead of you. You take out your phone and hit a few buttons. Just as you approach the entrance, you play your ringtone.

“Ah, I need to answer this. Just go on ahead without me; it might take a little while.” You tell her, putting on a bit of an act. Naoko turns and glances at you suspiciously, but reluctantly enters the dojo.

You wave the girl over. She looks surprised, though pleasantly so, smiling, and casually hops down. The long drop doesn’t hurt her, of course. The girl has blond hair tied into short twintails, and the only clothing she’s wearing is a hospital gown.

“So, what’s your story?” You ask her, putting your phone away. The girl scratches the back of her head, sheepishly smiling.

“I died from a sickness,” She says. “But that’s okay, because... I can move around again after being stuck in a bed for so long. I think it’s better this way.”

“You don’t miss your parents or friends?”

“I... I do miss them. They don’t see or hear me anymore, but... but I see them all the time, whenever I want to, so it’s okay. I know they miss me, and I know that they had to go through a lot only to lose me in the end,” The girl stops smiling. “I think it’s better that it’s finally over... for all of us.”

You pat her on the head. She lets out a sob.

“Are you going to stay here for a while? I’ll come back tonight, and I’d like to talk to you again.” You say, keeping your hand on her head.

“Yes,” She sobs again. “I like watching people fight, so...“

“Were you a martial artist?”

“At this dojo... before I got sick.”

“I’m Clarissa.”

“I’m Setsuko...”

“I’ll be back for you tonight, just wait for me, okay?”

The girl desperately nods a few times, wiping the tears off her face. You must have been the first person she’s spoken to ever since she died.

You head into the dojo after bidding your goodbyes.

The Zanpakuto

Sealed: A normal Katana, Nodachi, Wakizashi or other bladed weapon.

Shikai/ First Release: you have learned the name of the power in your soul, now tied to the sword. You weapon changes shape and offers unique powers.

Bankai: full release. You know the full and true name of your sword spirit after ten years of training and mastering it's respect or obedience. You also have the ability to manifest your Zanpakuto Spirit outside of your sword. More powerful than your Shikai, each Bankai is unique and may be wildly different from or a natural evolution of your sword's previous power.

The sparring goes on much as it usually does. Naoko wins about two out of three matches. Surprisingly, you’re not lagging that far behind even though you’ve skipped out on over a month of training. It feels easier to predict her moves, which actually leads to a lot of ‘see it coming but can’t dodge’ sort of moments. The victory to loss rate is pretty steady, and... it’s really routine and ordinary for the two of you, really, except for maybe one thing.

...Naoko is pulling her punches every once in a while. You’ve noticed it ever since your first ‘win’ today, but you thought that, well, maybe she got distracted, or maybe you’re... maybe you’re just wrong. But no, it’s actually a fairly stable occurrence. Every few matches she just lets you take the win.

You’ve been her constant sparring partner for years, but is this something that she’s always been doing all this time and you simply haven’t noticed until now? Does she just feel bad for you and let you take the occasional win? Why would you need this kind of pity, especially during something like training?

Full Bringer Powers

Bringer Light- you can will the environment to help you move faster and jump higher, safely land, and accomplish other feats. Softening the ground beneath your feat, jumping off of solidified air, or causing the whisky in a glass to rise up and snake past your lips.

Fullbrings
-Weapon Type: you turn an object into a weapon possessed of spiritual powers.

-Clad Type: You wear your Fullbring as an armor that enhances you in some way with special powers or unique circumstances.

-Projection: your Fullbring item takes on a new form that can manipulate reality according to its own unique rules.

Example weapon: Book of the End: Bookmark that becomes a sword. Can cut through anything, or can cut into the past of an object or person. Inserting the wielder into their past and altering their memory.

Example Clad: Dirty Boots- A pair of leather boots that becomes a white leather outfit of boots, chaps, jacket, hat, and boa. The more muck, blood, grime, it absorbs and accumulates the darker it gets and the faster, stronger, more resilient the user becomes.

Projection Example- Invaders Must Die. A PSP that creates closed dimensional spaces where the rules and content are at the whim of the user. Obstacles, health measurement, enemies, gravity, and forward speed of time.

Quincy Powers

Quincies draw in ambient spirit energy and particles and refine them. most techniques have German Names.

Holy Arrow: Using a silver Cross or Pentacost, Quincy form a now from which they fire arrows of spiritual energy. They can do this at high speed or direct the path of a singular arrow in flight.

Hienraku: Collecting spirit particles beneath their feat, Quiny can slide at high speed, levitate, create platforms, or fly.

Heavenly Puppet Strings: developed for elderly Quincy, this technique allows one to manipulate their own injured or decrepit body with strings of spirit pressure.

Blut- the power to flush their body with spirit pressure. Two modes. Blut Vene grants incredible resilience. Blut Artere increases offensive power. Cannot be used simultaneously.

Tools:

Quincy Cross: used to focus bows

Silver tubes: infused with their own energy and stores. These are used for the few Quincy Offensive Spells and Barriers.

Silver Armor: to prevent Quincy from baring Hollow Scars. Unlike normal humans, scarred Quincy do not react well to the infectious mark of hollows.

Dispersing Glove- this glove interferes with a Quincy's ability to gather and manipulate energy. Training with it nonstop for one week greatly increases a Quincy's ability to gather and manipulate spirit particles. If take off, it briefly grants a Quincy Incredible ability and power, called Final Form. This is short lived as it burns out a Quincy's ability to use spiritual power lest special circumstances are met.

...however...in the darkness...

“Are you going easy on me, Naoko?” You ask her during a break. The question is met with a silence. The girl drinks some water and stands up from the bench. She walks a few steps forward, and, just as you’re about to ask her again, she turns around, fixing you with a judgmental look.

“Everyone just stops fighting me after they lose too many times in a row. You’re just about my only sparring partner with whom I can actually practice and... make it seem like I’m actually losing without it being too improbable.”

“What the hell? You fancy yourself some kinda Bruce Lee, or something? I don’t need your pity, Naoko. Going easy on me isn’t going to help me improve. It won’t help you get better, either. So just-”

“I’ve been trying to keep it at a point where we’re both improving, even if for me it was just a miniscule amount...” She sighs, as if she’s tired, like you’re the one clearly in the wrong here. “I knew your pride would be hurt over this if you found out.”

Naoko closes her left eye; a habit of hers, something she does whenever she’s intently thinking over something. Her lone eye is looking over you with unabashed suspicion, as if trying to dissect you with its gaze.

“It’s strange, though. You’ve figured it out now, of all times, after a month-long break. You’ve improved even though you haven’t trained; no, your movements are slower, your punches are weaker, and your technique is worse. It’s like you learned how to act in a battle. It’s not skill or power - it’s experience. What were you doing this summer break, really?”

>”That’s not really any of your business, Naoko. I don’t know what you’re talking about, either.”
>Lie. “I was out of town. I have no idea what you’re talking about, Naoko.”

Her one-eyed stare is unyielding, and her expression is ice cold. It’s making you uneasy, as if you’re being interrogated. You try not to show it, but you have a feeling that her sharp eye can see through your attempts. You’ve always known Naoko as a serious person, but not to this... kind of extent.

You feel tempted to just crack a joke and see if you can redirect the conversation elsewhere, but... Naoko was never really into jokes. She never laughed at yours, at least.

...Yeah, there really is a good reason you two are not friends.

“I was... living together with Aiko.” You tell her what you’ve really been up to this summer break. It’s an empty truth that does almost nothing to answer her question. Naoko opens her closed eye, the two of them widening slightly in surprise. She doesn’t seem to doubt your answer whatsoever.

“...I haven’t seen Aiko the whole summer, either. What you’re saying is probably the truth. I must have been wrong in suspecting you of something. I’m sorry.” Her apology is just as blunt as the rest of her speech; it’s all matter-of-factly, straight to the point. Naoko’s eyes glance across the floor.

“But... do you know what happened to Aiko? If you’ve been living with her, you must know something.” She suddenly asks, looking towards you again. She’s not glaring this time, but you’re sure that she will, should you slip up.

“Something happened to Aiko?” You try playing dumb; it seems to work, and her stare doesn’t tense up. She looks away, closing one of her eyes again.

“She’s changed. It’s like she’s a completely different person from the last time I’ve seen her. Her walk, her manner of speech, her general behavior, her non-verbal language, her minor habits, even the way she breathes and sees things has changed.” Her lone eye looks at you again.

You’re... you’re appalled. What? Did she really see through all of that? Kimiko’s act may not have been convincing, but...

“The way she... breathes? Looks at things? Are you, uh, alright, Naoko?” You ask jokingly, feeling a little nervous.

Her look’s not yet tainted with suspicion. She puts a hand on her hip.

“Aiko was never an athlete, that much I can tell for sure. But her breathing is now always steady, efficient and controlled; it’s very nearly perfect, and you can’t achieve something like that without training yourself to the bone. The way she’s looking at things... well, it’s similar to yours. It’s intuitive, focused. Like a warrior’s. I’m sorry; not actually sure how to explain it. She just knows what to look at.”

Her gaze is eagerly waiting for an answer. An explanation, more like.

“Aiko hasn’t changed. Well, I haven’t noticed anything, at least.” You tell her, trying to sound as truthful as you can.

Surprisingly, Naoko isn’t suspicious of your answer. She nods.

“I suppose it would be harder to notice if you were always seeing each other, and if the change was gradual,” She mumbles to herself. She doesn’t seem satisfied, but she lets it go. The girl suddenly raises her head, as if remembering something. “...Why were you living together?”

“Uh... You know. Her parents were going to be out all month long, so...”

Naoko looks completely oblivious. You’re really in no mood to elaborate. You just let the pause hang for a little longer. After it becomes clear that Naoko isn’t going to piece it together, you stand up.

“...So, are we done for today, Naoko?” Your question knocks her out of her contemplative trance.

“Ah, yes, it’s getting late... Wait, Clarissa,” She calls you as you leave; her voice sounds the most worried you’ve ever heard it be, which, in this case, is slightly more than not at all. “Will... will you be coming back?”

You pause. “If you promise not to interrogate me anymore, and to not hold back again, then I’ll think about it.”

“I’m sorry. I won’t do that again,” Naoko’s reply is quick, almost desperate. She hurries after you.

As always, she doesn’t say anything as you walk together, but it almost feels like she gets a little dejected whenever the conversation grinds to a halt because of her.

“Kimiko, there’s somewhere we gotta go on tonight’s patrol. I saw a dead girl at the dojo, so we should send her on her way.”

“We’ll head there first, then. Hollows didn’t show up during the day, so she should still be there. Are you ready to go now?”

“Yeah.”

...

You and Kimiko make your way up the hill leading to the dojo. The two of you look inside, outside, everywhere. You can’t find Setsuko.

“She must have wandered off,” Keiko mutters, flipping her cellphone open.

“No, I told her to stay here and wait for me. I really doubt that she would have just walked away. Something must have happened.”

“As I said, there were no Hollows in town. Well, the worst that could have happened is that she got bored and left.” Kimiko tries reassuring you, but...

Her phone suddenly beeps.

“A Hollow. An unidentified, new one.” Kimiko confirms, and the two of you start running towards its location.

“A new one? You don’t think that-...”

“Of course not. It takes a lot of time for someone to turn into a Hollow. If this Setsuko of yours was on the verge of that, you’d notice. The only other way would be through another Hollow, that sentient one I talked about, but I spotted no such thing, so it can’t be-”

The signal fades. Kimiko abruptly stops, double-checking her phone.

“This is strange. The Hollow’s gone.”

“What, you’re saying it left?”

“It must have. It barely moved from the spot it appeared in, and then... it just left? That doesn’t make sense. Let’s go to its last known location and investigate.”

...

Karakura's moonlit town square is empty. Nothing and no one. Not a trace of battle, not a trace of an innocent soul.

“...Well. This is strange.”

“Not really. There’s fucking nothing here, Kimiko.”

“Let’s... let's continue the patrol, Clarissa.”

... Hollow popping up then disappearing, no sign of a fight or struggle visually or spiritually. Indicates a long range attack, one attack one kill, that "destroys" the entire hollow. Someone is doing our job for us. Kimiko said there was an alert when she came for us at Lunch, then it was gone. It just happened again. It will persist. There is a young man or woman in Karakura who IS a Quincy. And they know we've become a Shinigami. They know.
>>
>>37800424
Hollows killed by Quincy aren't purified and don't go to soul society to continue the spirit cycle or whatever. They are destroyed and it unbalances things a little.
The hollow suddenly disappeared just like that as soon as it appeared, with nothing signaling that it was purified or retreated to Hueco Mundo.
