Your name is Victor Kane, and you are a Sentinel Cadet. You are also really good at picking fights. The first time, it was just a fellow cadet who you were able to match. The second time, it was with Lance the Dragonmaster, one of the most powerful trainers in the entire world. Your friend, Darius, thinks you’re the luckiest idiot alive.

Thankfully, you avoided being turned into a bloody stain on the ground by virtue of intervention from one of your Instructors and managed to make it to the Auditorium before class started. Right now, you’re talking with Darius about the future.

“What do I want to do, eh?” Darius murmurs while stroking his beard. “Well, I did say that the only thing I’m really good at is smashing heads.”

He chuckles while resting an arm on the haft of the hammer he planted in the aisle next to his seat. “And if I run into something that puts up a real fight, I have Yamo to back me up.”
>>
>>37681612

He slouches down a little in his seat. “Howabout you? What do you really want to do? You’re good with that twig you call a sword.” He points to the hand and a half blade that rests against the seat in front of you. “And you’re probably the best shot in our class.” He gestures to the bow and quiver that’s next to the sword.
“But you’re a smart guy. You’ve got a head for tactics and stuff. Where do you see yourself going?”

>>37681613

You have to stop to think about that one. You were born and raised on the Frontier and it would be fitting to return there.

And yet, you still have nightmares of that attack. Would the Frontier truly be the best place?

“...I think i'd like to try something along the frontier, see if I can't make a difference out there you know? Probably be something of a Vagabond.”

Darius snorts. “I’m sensing a “but” in there.”

You glare at him. “But I think I might just try and go where people need me. You know what happened to my home. I don’t want anyone else to go through that pain.”

Darius rumbles, a soft laugh. “You may be an idiot, Victor, but you’re a good man.”

You grin. “Thanks Darius.”

At that moment, the lights in the Auditorium dim and several spotlights open up onto the stage, bathing it in light. Upon the platform stands Marshal Daniel Iason, Supreme Commander of the Sentinel Corps. He’s young looking man, but you have it on good authority that he’s well over Fifty. Many would describe him as handsome, with curling golden locks on his head and deep brown eyes. He’s wearing a ceremonial uniform and carries his customized lance on his back.
>>
File: Cyril.jpg (106 KB, 600x954)

>>37684024

That Sentinel from before also stands on the stage, and you can see him clearly now. He’s wearing a long, fur-lined cloak and sculpted black body armor underneath it. His head is shaved and his eyes are shadowed over by a heavy brow. A large sword is slung diagonally over his back.

The Marshal steps forward. “Greetings Cadets.” He says in a clear calm voice. “I must congratulate you all on making it this far. You’ve all outdone yourselves. Through your blood, sweat and tears, you have made it to the last week of instruction before you swear your oath and become full Sentinels.”

He begins pacing across the stage. “But that’s not to say that the worst is past. No, in fact, the exact opposite is true. Once you become a Sentinel, you will face trial after trial. This world is a cruel place.” He pauses, scanning over the crowd. “There are five hundred and twelve of you in this Class. In five years, it is likely that one in five of you will be dead. In ten years, one in two. If you’re still alive in twenty years, well…” He stops and gestures to the other Sentinel. “You’ll be like Major Cyril here. The last surviving member of his year.”
>>
>>37684049

The Major shifts his weight from his left foot to his right, but doesn’t react. You take a moment to survey your classmates. Many look disturbed, some look scared, and still others look angry. You spy Katrina at the front and note that she hasn’t reacted at all. Sneaking a glance at Darius, you see his mouth is set into a grim line and his eyes are grim.

The Marshal takes a deep breath. “You may now be wondering why on Earth you would want to continue on as a Sentinel. After all, you could be spending your life in less dangerous pursuits.” He stops his pacing, and looks directly at the assembled Cadets. “I will tell you why. Because we stand between humanity and extinction. We defend the weak and the helpless until they have strength to stand on their own. We fight against the the terrors of this world, whether they be man or monster.”

“And we have stood for close to a thousand years. You are the latest in that long tradition and, gods willing, you will not be the last.”

His words are powerful, and strike a chord with you. Looking around the auditorium, you note that the fear and anger you once saw throughout your fellow Cadets seems to have subsided, replaced by determination and hope.

The Marshal smiles. “I wish you luck, Cadets. For there is no doubt you will need it.”

And he walks off the stage.
>>
>>37684071
>>37684049
>>37684024
OP you are doing a good job.
>>
>>37684071

The mood as the Cadets file out of the Auditorium is somber, but tinged with determination. You yourself feel a certain drive to do your best as a Sentinel. Beside you, Darius grins with a sort of fierce pride.

“‘We stand between humanity and extinction.” Eh?” He chortles. “That can go to a man’s head.”

“Better hope it doesn’t, Cadet.” A baritone voice says from behind the two of you. Turning around, you find Major Cyril standing behind you, hands in his pockets and smiling a sad smile.

“I’ve seen too many friends die because of an overinflated ego.” He continues. “I wouldn’t want you to perish before your time.”

Darius stiffens a bit before cranking out a loose salute, his hand coming up to meet his forehead. “Sir!”

Cyril laughs. “At ease, son, I’m not gonna bite your head off.” He steps forward and pats Darius on the shoulder. “But I’m not here to talk with you.”

He turns to face you and you look up at him. I must be a foot taller than you but this close, you can make out more details. His eyes are a dark grey and flat, seemingly drinking in light. There’s a few scars scattered about his face, but nothing too deep or disfiguring.

“What’s your name, son?” He asks you. “And what Pokemon do you have?”

“Victor Kane, sir!” You say. “I have a Wartortle, a Metang and a Larvitar, sir!”

Cyril’s eyebrows rise slightly and he murmurs something that you don’t quite catch.

“Your father wouldn’t have been Matthias Kane, would he?” Cyril asks.

Now your eyebrows rise. When you first arrived at the Academy, you had looked up your father in the records and hadn’t found much beyond the some old test scores (High scores in combat and medicine) and an official reprimand (for a drunk and disorderly). Other than that, there wasn’t much in the databases. And now here was a man who apparently knew him.

“You knew my father, sir?” You ask hesitantly.

Cyril smiles, a genuinely happy expression on his grim and scarred face. “I did. He was a good man, and a brave one. I was honored to have fought at his side.” His eyes brighten a little. “On the battlefield and in many a bar.”

>>
>>37685511

You absently note that, Darius has walked a few steps away to give the two of you some privacy.

Privately, you’re a little surprised, but it’s a pleasant feeling. You were too young to understand exactly what your father did for a living and never got to ask him. There’s so many things you want to ask but you end up blurting out the first thing that comes to mind:
“Was he any good?”

Cyril raises an eyebrow. “He was one of the best swordsmen I’ve ever scene. I once watched him cut a Scizor in half before gutting its trainer. And with his Pokemon, he was practically unstoppable.” He seems a little lost in reminiscence. “... It broke my heart when I heard he was dead.”

You clear your throat. “How did you two meet? Were you from the same graduating class or did you meet on the job?”

“Same graduating class.” Now the Major seems sad. “The previous Marshal gave us those same statistics, you know that? I always thought Matthias would be the last of us to fall.” He sighs, eyes dark with grief. “Fate can be a bitch.”

You decide to change the topic. “Uh, is there something you wanted from me sir?”

Cyril nods, his demeanor returning to strict professionalism. “Yes, I did Cadet. Tell me, do you know why most Trainers have a tendency to stick with one or two Pokemon types?“

You think for a moment, thinking back to the Battle Theory classes and Professor Aspen’s lectures. Well, what you can remember of the lectures when you weren’t staring at her breasts.

“Familiarity.” You say. “Most trainers either know what kind of pokemon complements their style best or they get used to fighting with a certain kind of pokemon and then never leave their comfort zone. It's easier to learn move set and their temperaments as well as tells.”

You shift your weight, getting your bow to sit a bit more comfortably on your back. “There’s also stuff like how it leaves more time to focus on classes, leaves your options open for new partners when you finally decide to go into the field so you can try and build your team the way you want it. It’s easier to coordinate tactics with fewer pokemon. Some people just don’t get the chance either.”

Cyril nods. “All valid theories. But account for the fact that it’s almost impossible to have Pokemon of opposing types on the same team. The few times when you see it, those are the only Pokemon on the team and one of them generally doesn’t do as well.”

You think back to how one of the other cadets had tried to train a Pikachu and a Graveler. Eventually, her Pikachu had run away leaving her with just the Graveler.
>>
>>37687255

“Pokemon form empathic bonds with their trainers.” Cyril continues. “This is pretty well-known. The bond is what allows you to command your Pokemon and without it, you may as well be yelling at a dumb animal. What isn’t well known at all is that the vast majority of Trainers have a tendency to ‘Imprint’ a Type onto themselves. If they first start training fire Pokemon, then it’s likely they will only be able to train fire Pokemon from then on unless they imprint another type on themselves quickly. If they wait too long, they won’t be able to form bonds with any other type besides fire.”

This… is revolutionary.

But something occurs to you. “How come people don’t Know this?” You ask incredulously.

Cyril shrugs. “It’s not something that Trainers would actively focus on. No one really gives the situation much thought, aside from the Pokemon Professors, and even they haven’t arrived at proper conclusions.”

“Then, how do you know?” You ask.

Cyril grimaces. “I’ll tell you some other time maybe. It’s a long story. There’s a lot of things I’ve learned about empathic bonds that would blow your mind. Like how humans take on traits of Pokemon and the Pokemon take on traits of humans. Over generations the traits become ingrained in the bloodline. Don’t believe me? Just ask Sabrina Mindbreaker. Her family has worked with Psychic Pokemon for so long that the entire bloodline is born with Psychic powers.”
>>
>>37687289

You’re stunned. “But, what about my Pokemon? I have 5 different types and two of them are opposing!”

Cyril nods. “And that’s what I came to talk to you about. But not here. I have several more students to talk to, but meet me at the Dining Hall at noon.”

He pats you on the shoulder before turning and walking away.

>>
>>37687413

>>
>>37687413

Still a little stunned, you pull out the Pokeballs on your belt, staring at them. Shellshocker has been your companion for close to nine years, while Cobalt has been around for 5. Terra is extremely new, the baby Larvitar only having accompanied you for 2 weeks now. But you have strong bonds with all of them. According to Cyril though, you should have been restricted to water types from the get-go.

So what makes you special?

You shake your head, setting aside those thoughts for now. Darius waits for you near the path that leads to you next class.

“So,” he starts. “What was that about?”

>Response?
>>
>>37687935

“Not quite sure. He knew my father since they graduated together and said he had something to tell me around noon and after he talked to some other students.” You reply “There was also this whole thing about Pokemon bonds.”

Darius quirks an eyebrow. “Pokemon bonds?”

“Yeah, apparently the main reason why most trainers stick to only a few types of Pokemon is because they bond with the types.”

Darius blinks a few times. “That… makes sense in a weird kinda way.”

You nod.

The path you two were walking along splits off and Darius takes the new route. “I’ll see you later Victor. I’m off to AFT.”

You wave good-bye and walk on.

When you finally enter your Battle Theory class, you note several things. The first is the fact that there are balloons and streamers set up all over the place. Second is the banner behind the teacher’s desk that reads “Congratulations Cadets!” And third is the food table that’s set up with a ton of of party snacks and a cake.

Most of the Cadets in your class are a milling around, socializing and eating. The far wall is lined with the weapons that many of them have put down. Walking towards it, you hang up your sword, bow and quiver, keeping your knife on you.

“VIIIIICTOOOORRRR!” You hear a high pitched squeal from behind you and react on instinct.

Your arms are pinned to your sides and your can’t open your mouth for much beyond a frantic “MPHMRGL!” You manage to squeeze your tongue out but only manage to lick her sweater. Ugh.

Eventually, the Professor puts you down, much to your relief.

You wait for the room to stop spinning before speaking. “G-good to see you too Professor Aspen.” You swallow. “How are you?”

The buxom young Professor smiles down at you. She's wearing a labcoat over a blue ribbed sweater and a pair of jeans and sneakers. “I’m always happy when my favorite student is around!”

You guess you are her favorite student. You don’t think she borderline molests anyone else around here. Although, admittedly, you don’t think she really has much in the way of personal space. kinda want to say the reason he likes history so much is because his dad use to read him stories of old heroes before he want to bed and it's something he continued even after his father died.
>>
>>37691169
We had a lot of talk earlier on in the threads that in certain situations he likes being mistaken for a girl.

for foods I want to say he likes sweet foods mostly because I find the image of him going for the most girly foods in a restron or a party makes me laugh seeing how much he hates being confused for a girl and I can't help but think that Darius became victor's best friend because I imagon that Victor joined the sentinels shortly after his village burned down and probably was broader line emo and I just get the impression that Darius is the kind of guy who would but into Victor's life and try and cheer him up. And either through charm or stockholm syndrome it eventually worked.

>>37691340
I'd like to think that most dragons he isn't TOO bothered by, I mean yeah he's probably got feelings towards them but nothing to bad, but salamence he probably has a knee jerk reaction to.

Pet Peeves: Hates being mistaken for a girl, Polearm fanatics

Favorite Food: Slowpoke Tail (He's only had it once but it was DELICIOUS)

Darius is his best friend because when they first met, they were both reedy young whelps without any friends. They bonded and have been close ever since. Sadly, when they hit puberty, Darius turned into a musclebound hulk and Victor got pretty.

>>37691343

I think the latter is true, most of us wanted to get a Dragonite at first.

You take a deep breath, sitting down in a nearby chair. Looking around the room, you note that most of the other Cadets are ignoring the Professor’s antics, no doubt used to them at this point.

You look up at the Professor, her extremely pretty face beaming down at you. “So, Professor, considering the fact you keep doing this… want to go on a date?”

The Professor laughs, and then flicks you on the nose. “Not in a million years. You’re going to be a Sentinel soon, which means you’ll probably be dead in a few years, leaving me heartbroken. Oh, that reminds me, I’m going to need to find a new glomp target soon.” She trails off, looking up at the ceiling and pressing a finger to her lip.

You sigh. Of course you should have expected this.

“Well, did you need anything?” You ask her.

The Professor look down at you and snaps her fingers. “Yes! I do.” Then she leans forward and down to the point where barely a centimeter separates your noses.

She narrows her eyes and smiles widely. “I need you…” She purrs.

Then she grabs the collar of your jacket and tosses you toward the food table, where you land on the ground in an unceremonious heap. “To enjoy yourself!” She shouts triumphantly. “Eat! Drink! Be Merry! Because you’ll probably be dead soon!”

She cackles to herself and walks toward her desk.

Pulling yourself to your feet, you quickly stretch to ease out any kinks in your limbs. Dammit, you wanted to ask her about those Pokemon Bonds too, but you’re not too keen on bugging her right now. She might glomp you again.

You look at the food table and the massive chocolate cake on it. That’s looking mighty tempting right now…

This is an important question that I struggled with for quite a while. Obviously, non-Pokemon plants exist and something has to support a decent eco-system.

Instead, I decided that normal insects exist, but the vast majority of other species are replaced by Pokemon.

It shouldn't ever come though.
>>
>>37691958

pretty sure several pokemon have been stated to eat insects. and I somehow doubt they were talking about heracrosses.
>>
>>37692016

Yeah, but normal elephants are also stated to exist and that's weird.
>>
>>37692053

never heard of that one before. that is weird.

of course, I am assuming that the Pokedex entries that say things like "mouse pokemon" or "ball whale pokemon" are just glitches in the system cause by some alternate dimension.

You’ll have a little bit of the cake, you decide and proceed to cut yourself a slice. It’s good, very warm and moist. You proceed to wash it down with a cup of soda and then grab a bag of chips. Thus sated, you decide to go bother Professor Aspen once more.

Approaching her desk, you see her typing furiously on her computer, her fingers practically a blur. As you approach, she looks up at you and scowls. “Didn’t I just tell you to go enjoy yourself?”

You hold up the chips in response and she sighs. “What do you want anyways?”

“So,” you begin, smiling just a bit. “If I come back alive, I’ll get a date?”

The Professor scoffs. “Oh please. That’s a big “if” you know.” She scratches her chin. “But sure, why not? If you’re still alive in a year, I’ll go on a date with you.”

You grin fully. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Anything else you needed?” she asks.

“Yeah, do you know anything about Pokemon Empathic Bonds?” You ask.

Aspen nods. “Yep. It’s the whole thing about Trainers and their Pokemon forming emotional links that allow them to communicate better. It’s a real big boon in just about any situation. Why do you ask?”

“Could it have anything to do with why most trainers stick to only a few types of Pokemon? Like, they imprint the type on them or something?”

The Professor scratches her hair, brows furrowed. “I suppose it’s a possibility. I’ve never really considered it though. It’s worth investigating.” And she starts typing again. “Is that everything?

Not exactly "Regular" Pokemon Universe. There's some big changes that I haven't touched on yet that mainly involve Various Types and certain Pokemon. The Empathic Bond thing is a new idea based on something I read a while ago.

Also, I'm torn on whether or not I should turn Dragonite into pic related.

“Yeah, I’ll be going.” You say. “Can I leave this class? I want to go spend some time with my Pokemon.”

“Sure, whatever.” The Professor says absent-mindedly.

You take your leave, snagging some cake and your weapons on the way out. Searching around the local trees, you find a small clearing with a stump in the center. Sitting down on it, you let Shellshocker, Cobalt and Terra out. Terra immediately jumps into your lap and makes herself comfortable, curling up against your stomach. Cobalt simply floats above your head, occasionally turning to look in different directions. Shellshocker simply leans against the stump, putting his arms behind his head, the picture of relaxed.

Giving a little of the the cake to Terra, you ponder what you should do now.

>>
>>37692951
>>37693007
Basically this. What moves do they know? Let's try to teach Cobalt Confusion. Maybe Terra could try working on Bite? Shellshocker should work on Bubblebeam.
>>
>>37693035
>>37692951

I'll support this, but how exactly do we intend to do that? Like, ask Shellshocker to shoot bubbles? Terra to bite?
>>
>>37693075
Well, it depends on what moves they already know. I imagine Shellshocker already knows at least Water Gun -- while we might have to start fresh with Terra, who has likely never seen combat, and Cobalt, who... yeah. He's a Metang, so.
>>
>>37693212
>>37693075
Maybe Magnet Rise for Cobalt instead?
>>
>>37693035
>>37693075

Okay, I have to explain something here.

You can, in general, give quick commands, but Pokemon aren't limited to 4 moves. Moves are generally just common ways of denoting certain strings of actions.

For example, you could have Cobalt lift some rocks with its mind and throw them while following up with a "Metal Claw" which would have it rush in and Claw the enemy with its reinforced claws.

Yes, this means you can come up with entirely customized movesets. You just need to teach them to your Pokemon.
>>
>>37693212
I just kinda figured that we had Shellshocker help us when we shoot things with our bow since he probably has some decent ranged attacks while Cobalt mostly acted in a defensive/support role to give us a brief moment to switch between bow and sword plus with psychic attacks she's got range and with metal attacks she can destroy things up close as well. I also just imagine Terra throwing rocks at things that get to close.
>>
>>37693271

Almost forgot to mention, it's completely possible to command your Pokemon through the use of other signals entirely.

Psychic Pokemon often don't need to be commanded with visible signals at all. Telepathy is useful.
>>
>>37693314
Guys. What if we train our pokemon to operate off of different pitches of whistles?
>>
Forgot one more thing, and this is really important and must be taken care of before I can continue.

Since Shellshocker and Cobalt have been with you for years, they already have certain routines learned. If you propose some command lines, and signals for them, they will have learned these lines.

The only one who wouldn't know anything major is Terra, who is still an infant. I'm assuming that you're focusing on training Terra, rather than Cobalt or Shellshocker.
>>
>>37693462
Yes. Gotta get that TTar swag on.

I'm surprised no one is taking the opportunity to be a munchkin

>>37692951

You check the time by looking up at the sky. It’s a sunny day and you can see that it’s somewhere between 9 and 10 right now. You’ve got time before you need to meet Cyril. You decide that you should work on training Terra up first. She’s a bit weak in her current state and while she will one day become an incredibly powerful pokemon, she still has a ways to go.

You pluck Terra off of your lap and stand up. She squirms a little in discomfort when you place her back on the stump, but is calmed down by a little bite of cake.

“Okay, Terra.” You say. “We’re going to play a game now.” You send a thought to Cobalt and she approaches you with a small branch. “Terra, you need to bite the branch. If you bite, it you get a treat.” You hold up the remnants of the cake.

Terra stands up on the stump and waggles her little tail before leaning forward to bite the branch that you’ve held out in front of her. At the last second, you yank the branch out of the way, causing Terra to chomp on empty Air. She glares up at you and you shrug. She waggles her tail again, and launches herself forward in an attempt to bite the branch. You, of course, move it out of the way again.
>>
>>37693885

What follows is rather like an entertaining game of tag. You run around the clearing, brandishing the branch while Terra runs after you, trying to bite it again and failing. Eventually, you notice her speed up significantly and suddenly flash forward. She opens her mouth wide, revealing sharp teeth surrounded by an inky black aura. When her mouth closes on the branch, she chomps right through it, causing it to explode into pieces. After hitting the ground, Terra rolls to her feet and spins around, looking at you.

You smile. “Well done Terra.” And toss her the cake.

She catches it effortlessly and sits down to munch on it.

You look up at the sky again. It’s around 11:00 now, you think.
