Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you meditated on what the hell is wrong with you, ate breakfast, had a chat with a companion, and prepared to visit your Master.

You reach out to Fulvia via the brooches, leaning your back against the side of the carriage. {Fulvia, could you wake Prema up and have her pick out a slave to act as my driver. Oh, and have the slave bring my cloak too. I need to get to my Master's home and I'd like to spend some time with Zahak. Oh, and by the way. You still have the left over silver from yesterday, correct?}

She responds promptly. {Yes, it is stored in the bedroom I have selected as my own. Why do you ask?}

She doesn't seem quite as robotic as she has been the last few days. You wonder what's up with her lately. {I was hoping you and Prema could take what's left and use it to higher some additional labors, perhaps some professionals, to speed up the repairs on the estate. I want the place to look really great for the party.}

{Very well, I will inform Prema and have her select a driver. When we have hired laborers, I will inform you of their number and cost.} The connection is severed, and a few minutes later a sleepy looking elf in a new cotton uniform emerges from the front door carrying your cloak slung over one arm. You're pleased to see that Ricky didn't devour him.

Normally a slave's uniform is made out of linen or wool, cotton is typically reserved for laborers and other freedmen. It's quite the ostentatious display of wealth to clothe one's slaves in cotton uniforms. You wonder if you ought to have your family crest emblazoned on the backs of the uniforms. You think that would be a nice, if somewhat ironic, touch. Considering of course your family crest is a depiction of broken manacles above a crown.

The elf bows low when he notices you, touching his fore and middle fingers first to his forehead, then to his chest. You're glad to see he's been taught proper etiquette. You're also surprised to find that when he speaks, it's in Samjan, though it's not in good Samjan. “I am called by my name which is Stelios. The woman who is called Prema told me that you who are the Master had need of me.”

You stand up straight. “A pleasure to meet you Stelios. For the record, all you needed to say was 'I am Stelios, Prema told me you needed me', but I admire the effort. Anyway, do you recall the route to my former Master's home?”

Stelios stands, and offers you your cloak, while scrunching his face together in concentration as he tries to mentally decipher what it is you've said. Eventually he nods his head slowly. When next he speaks, it's careful and halting, but much easier to understand. “The way to the house which we waited outside of? Yes, I sufficiently remember the directions to that place.”

You nod approvingly, pulling open the carriage door and climbing the first step. “Good, you'll be driving me there.” With that, you slip inside the carriage compartment and shut the door. Zahak practically climbs on top of you once you've taken a seat, he dominates the benches which surround the central table and he seems bound and determined to keep his head in your lap. It's actually kind of cute, if a little odd.

You sheathe your hand in flame and run it along his flank, you know how much he likes that. At the same time, you reach into your cloak and extract a sheet of parchment paper and an inkwell. You don't really need a pen to write, merely using water magic to lift the ink from the inkwell and lay it down on the page. You figure you'll just make a quick list of what you want the language to be like, to give you a starting point to base your design upon once you start in earnest. You can always change your mind later.

Gold, orange, and yellow are the colors described for the general souls in the city, considering all the slaves and other humans and elves, there should be thousands of humans/elves in the city.
Considering Mik didn't mention any other colors for souls, I assume the orange and yellow apply to humans and elves.
Unless of course those three colors are indiscriminate between races.

Well, just thinking about the sort of qualities you want your language to have. It needs to be easily legible, since you'll probably primarily be using it to take notes regarding experiments or discoveries and other such sensitive information. You'll also want it to be teachable, but not too easy to decipher or learn. It certainly can't just be encoded Samjan, so you'll probably need to come up with a new alphabet of some sort.

Ink shapes itself on the page fluidly as you contemplate. You barely have to focus on maintaining the spell at all, allowing your mind to wander at will. Everything ends up recorded just the same. By the time the carriage rumbles to a stop you've filled the page with a neatly organized list of ideas. Bullet points, really. Nothing terribly in depth, but just sitting down and really thinking about it proved insightful.

You tuck the paper and the inkwell into your cloak and fold it over your arm, urging Zahak to follow you as you maneuver your way over to the door. You wait, and soon it swings open. Stelios stands to one side holding the door for you. You find that he's pulled the carriage around so that when you step out, you step out facing your Master's front door. He's done surprisingly well, for a new slave. That slaver you purchased him from did a good job training him.

“Thank you, Stelios. You can wait in the carriage.” You direct him, the carriage rocking as Zahak climbs out. You're pleased to see that he made himself invisible without you needing to tell him to do so. Your son learns quickly. Stelios seems incredibly uncomfortable, staring at roughly the space where you think Zahak should be, but quickly ducks inside after a moment.

You reach out to your master via the brooches. {I've come to visit! I figured that now was as good a time as any to teach you how to enchant an object and pass through the veil between our world and the void. I, of course, won't be participating myself unless I need to. I'm trying to avoid contact with that accursed place.}

Your master responds quickly. You're glad to see he's awake, you didn't wish to be rude. {About time, you've been swearing up and down you'd get to it eventually. Anyway, get up here then. I've sent Rasim into the Eastern Slums to practice healing on the beggars there.}

You question the reasoning behind just dropping a child in the Eastern Slums unsupervised, but you suppose it helped you learn to channel magic towards mental actions. Plus, Rasim is clanless. He probably grew up in the Eastern Slums. You managed to survive and you were a noble brat.

Pushing the door open you step around the thankfully inert pneumatic cannon. One of your Master's inventions he's quite proud of. It uses steam and heat from the baths as well as some simple valves to increase the pressure inside a small chamber. When someone opens the door, the lever is released and something is launched at whoever is stepping inside. You've seen sheep's intestines filled with water, various foods, a rock, and half a dozen different foul smelling alchemical concoctions fired from the accursed thing.

Zahak fades into visibility once you close the door behind him and the two of you cross the baths to the stairs up to the second floor. You find your Master snacking on a plate of cookies, he's never really had the healthiest of diets.

(2/3)
>>
As you and Zahak enter, your Master holds up his hand. “Now why have you brought the dragon with you? Was the purpose of you moving into that estate of yours not to avoid your little hellion tearing apart my house?”

You grin. “Well I can't shirk my duties as a father, Master. Besides, I want to teach him to meditate. I figure once I've taught you what I can, I'll teach Zahak while you meditate.”

Your answer seems to placate the old man. “Fine, fine. Lets get started then. Enchanting, how do I do it?”

>Actually, you'd think it would be best to start with Meditation upon Reality. That will help him to properly visualize and manipulate his soul.
>Start off with a demonstration. Perform some sort of simple, non-permanent enchantment. Turn a lump of stone to mud, or something of that sort.

Soul stuff is essential and a small demo afterwards for the basics.

Let's not teach him permanency or other advanced methods, he wants to use this stuff a lot and the less damage he can do to himself and other things the better.

>>
>>37598215
His DC was 18. The veil is really, really weak around the Grand Library.
The reason you discovered an Open Gateway was because you rolled a Great Success.

Actually, I guess that works out pretty well. If the veil being weak lowers the DC, and open gates weaken the veil, you'd be more likely to discover an open gateway in areas where the veil is weak.

Anyway, almost done with the post.

That's actually one thing.
>learn to observe souls
We're teaching him that now.
>>
You hold up your hands, begging pause. “First, you need to learn how to slip past the veil between our world and the void. Enchanting and the soul are intrinsically intertwined, and that aside it will help you learn to feel out the threads which bind together reality.”

He nods, listening aptly. “As you say then, as you say. You're the closest thing we've got to an expert after all. Likely the closest thing in all the world” That's a terrifying thought. You're only twenty six years old, almost twenty seven. “So how should I go about this? I'm familiar with the soul, although I'll need a few hits of opium to get into that deep of a trance. Reason why I never gave you the stuff, terribly useful but these days I can't focus worth a damn without it.”

You sit down amidst a cluster of pillows across from your master, snagging a cookie and enjoying it while you think. “You're familiar with Metal Magic, correct?”

He nods. “I'm quite experienced with it, actually. I've extensive experience with all of the elements though I've only truly mastered Water and Nature. I've almost perfected Earth, but I've no desire to attempt a Grandmastery meditation. Nor do I have the time.”

Huh, you didn't know that. “Good, in that case the first step is to sort off... 'reach out' with metal magic. Feel the world around you. Don't slip into a trance, you need to avoid slipping into a trance at all cost. You should begin to feel the threads that bind the world. They'll appear as gold against a background of silver, or at least they did for me.”

(1/2)
>>
>>37598400
Don't worry, it'll fill itself up in no time.
>>
Hmm, now that our master knows how to observe souls, we could have him check on those unique souls we saw while we go murder a chump.
>>
You stroke your chin contemplatively as you try to recall all that you can of your experience with this meditation. “Once the threads are exposed, and more importantly the gaps between the threads, you'll need to force your consciousness to detach from your body. It's difficult, it probably took more an hour or so to figure it out, and at the time I was quite detached from reality. You should get a sense that you're falling, or fading away. That's good, means you're doing things right.”

“You should become aware of yourself as a sort of golden, or yellow, or orange orb of light in a narrow grey corridor. The real world should still be visible on one side, but it should seem like you're staring through a silk screen. Look in the opposite direction and you should see a dark grey film stretching endlessly in any one direction. That's the void. Now, the trick is passing through this barrier. You'll need to use Earth magic to erode your soul-”

Your master interrupts you. “Wait, I need to erode my own soul to pass through this barricade? That seems unwise.”

You shrug your shoulders. “I admit, it's strange. However, a coherent entity can't pass through the barrier that separates our world from the void. You'll forget a lot. I mean, I wasn't even sure I had a childhood at the end of it. Your emotions will drain away. It will be unpleasant. It all returns though, once you rest or your soul is restored. Anyway, as you erode your soul you should gravitate towards the void and ultimately pass through the barrier without really needing to do anything.”

(2/3)
>>
“Now, once you're in the void you'll need to be careful. I just wandered around at random, but when I found this method in Varistha Sehzade's notes, it mentioned battling void creatures. My recommendation is that, should you find a void creature, simply leave. You should only need to will yourself to return in order to do so. Anyway, eventually you should feel your soul tugged towards a distant location. Just allow it to do as it wishes, you'll arrive at a gateway. If it's opened, and you'll know if it's open, don't enter it. I think that's how I got that parasite latched to my soul.”

You think over it for a time, before ultimately nodding. “Okay, I think that's all I can tell you. The rest is up to you.”

Your Master nods brusquely, closing his eyes. You feel him beginning to channel vys. After a few minutes of merely sitting there, your master slumps over apparently lifeless. You reach over, pressing your fingers against his neck. His pulse is strong, so he seems fine.

You sit back, but after several minutes of silence you turn your attention to Zahak. You suppose you might as well start teaching him to meditate. Your Master will probably be out for a while. He seemed to do quite well, got it in one try. Good on him. You suppose you shouldn't really be surprised, he is a five hundred some-odd year old Vatis.

You turn your attention to Zahak, offering him what's left of your cookie. He snatches it quickly with his mouth, though fortunately manages not to bite your fingers. You impress upon him your own sense of curiosity, and then an image of Zahak spewing flames, and you drawing water from the air.

Zahak responds by bathing you in a jet of flame. Fortunately you're a competent enough Fire Vatis that you can simply snuff the fire out before it can harm you or catch anything else on fire. Once Zahak has finished breathing fire at you, you hold up a finger and imagine him as you've seen him in the past, as a bright glowing ball of vys. You picture the vys flowing through his chest, up his neck, and coming out of his mouth as flames.

Zahak cocks his head to one side, uncomprehending. You're met with a wave of confusion and curiosity in response. You try something else. You imagine Zahak making that little spiraling tendril of water rise out of the bath. Then you try to impress upon him the concept of equivalency before picturing him breathing fire. You follow this up by mimicking the view of Zahak as a bright ball of vys, the vys flowing out to both make the tendril of water rise from the bath and spewing from his mouth as flame.

You receive an image of Zahak making a pebble turn to sand, then an image of him shooting a jet of flame at the pile of sand he'd created until it turns into molten slag. Then an image of Chrys with a block of stone sitting in front of her. She seems to be meditating. Slowly, the stone begins to flake away in long sheets. The result of her sculpting attempt is a startlingly accurate depiction of a faceless human man holding aloft a spear, as if he were about to throw it. She actually has quite the talent for sculpting, although you suppose it's quite a bit easier for a Vatis to simply replicate an image in his head with magic than it is for an artist to slave away tirelessly with hammer and chisel.
(1/2)
>>
So, if you're interpreting all of this correctly Zahak has previously learned merely by imitating what others have done. He seems to be quite the natural, especially considering his youth. You focus on that mental image he sent you of Chrys meditating, and then a separate mental image of you meditating, and finally urge Zahak to try the same.

Zahak starts trying to imitate the stance you and Chrys both use to meditate, legs folded beneath yourselves and hands rested on your knees. It is perhaps the most common stance, though you have seen others. Of course, Zahak not being humanoid by any stretch of the imagination, he has significant trouble with it. He can't seem to bend his legs that way.

You impress upon him that the stance itself isn't important, and try to encourage him to just get comfortable. Eventually he seems to get it, because he curls up on his side, wings forming a sort of protective cocoon around his body. Finally, you encourage him to simply let go, and try to enforce upon him a feeling of calm and peaceful contemplation. Eventually you get the sense that it's working. He slips away, but his mind feels different than it does when he sleeps.

Your master is still entirely out of it, so you have some time to kill. You snag another cookie and think about how you ought to spend your time.

>Read a book, Zahak probably won't take too long.

I'm just worried for when our son loses his charming innocence and starts getting interested in female dragons. Seeing how they're practically extinct in the surface world, how's a gifted magical dragon in his rebellious, awkward phases going to cope with it? Are we even prepared as a father to deal with this?

Just imagine, our son bringing home some female from who knows what race, introducing her as his "girlfriend". I know Uncle Prof would be grinning and wanting to offer "advice", but how's Papa Mik gonna take it?

>>
>>37600735
You are dumb.

If you do not move you drown. Not moving is the least amount of effort put into something. Therefore drowning takes no effort. Therefor drowning is the path of least resistance because it is literally "free"

Skeleton fun facts: Black people's skeletons weigh more than white people's.
Averages of dry fat free skeleton weights (slightly rounded):
White male: 3.45kg = 7.60lbs.
Black male: 3.89kg = 8.58lbs.
White female: 2.34kg = 5.14lbs.
Black female: 2.85kg = 6.27lbs.

You reach into your cloak and extract your Ritual Book of Surya. Making yourself comfortable amongst the pillows, you crack open the book to the page you bookmarked and set to reading. The page you left off on was primarily dominated by a discussion of a method of meditating heat such that air rapidly expanded, creating a sort of tiny explosion. It's actually more difficult than it initially sounds, as it requires rapidly forcing energy into a relatively small area without allowing it to dissipate as I would naturally be wont to do.

It peaks your interest because it's the first you've heard of anything resembling the manipulation of air. Curious to test the method described, you focus on a small area on the wall and channel a burst of pure heat into the area. Unfortunately you lose control of it and it merely spreads out across the wall, most of it absorbed by the stone. A shame, seems you'll actually need to focus and actually expend vys to pull that off.

You continue reading. The next method discussed is more... abstract. You don't really know how to describe what you're reading. It claims that by manipulating heat and light in a certain way one should be able to generate something they call 'Surya's Wrath'. It's described as arcs of white hot fire dancing between the tips of one's fingers, which eventually coalesce into a blade of fire capable of sheering through even the sturdiest of materials.
(1/3)
>>
It goes on to say that it can also be manipulated such that instead of coalescing, the charge is shot forth all at once, creating delicate arcs of lightning which can prove devastating to enemies. It takes a truly great Vatis to maintain the conditions necessary to create these phenomena for any great period of time. Reading about it, you're reminded of that maneuver your Master pulled inside the void. Lightning seemed to dance between his fingers before eventually shooting out as one massive bolt. Of course, it didn't have any effect. It was still quite impressive though. Having a blade of fire extending from your arm also sounds neat, though you're forced to question just how fire, a largely incorporeal substance, could cut through anything.

Turning to the next page you find that it begins a new chapter. It seems devoted to steeling oneself against the ravages of flame. Its advice is... unorthodox. It says one ought to hold their hands in an open flame until the flesh begins to slough off. At that point they should remove their hands from the fire and wrap them firmly with clean cloth. Bandages should be changed once every six hours or necessary, until the burns have healed. All feeling should be removed from the hand, including the ability to feel heat and pain. You've little idea why that would be a good thing.

You're distracted by the sound of Zahak stirring. All at once his head bolts up, long neck craning as he looks around. His eyes are wide with excitement, and upon spotting you he leaps to his feet. You find yourself pinned beneath an excited, chirping dragon as it wraps you in its wings, your mind assaulted by a wash of positive emotions. Then, much to your surprise, he speaks. {I did it! Papa I did it! Just like you and mother and uncle-brother that one time and other uncle right now! It helped me figure out why you roar so quietly.}

(2/3)

Lightning!
>>
You're left wondering who the hell 'uncle-brother' is. Also, roaring quietly? Is that what he thinks speech is? You suppose his vocal cords are quite dissimilar from your own and so it's unrealistic to expect him to actually register your words as 'speech'. Actually, speech is probably a foreign concept to him if all dragons are able to communicate telepathically with one another. Whatever, the point is that he seems to have finally, at least partially, figured out speech. Gods be with you.

{Do I get a goat now? I think I deserve a goat! I did the thing! Oh, oh, I want one of the big goats with a hump on its back! Maybe one of the goats with the sharp teeth and long noses, or a bunch of the small goats with long tails and funny ears.}

You've got no idea what he's saying. You got that he thinks camels are a type of goat, but what animal has sharp teeth and a long nose, or funny ears?

No he should focus on increasing his hoard through other means.
And we will already be rewarding him with a goat.
Increasing his hoard is something else. 1-3 is reasonable.
1g is alot of money man.

Heck once he is big enough. We will need to spend money to create for him his own room. Where he can go to when he see's fit.
And made of stone and big enough to store a dragon. So I am thinking we will spend atleast 500 silver in stone. And making basically an air ship port but for our son..
He can fly in and out when he see's fit. With his hoard safely there.

>Two days later he asks for a Zahak goat
>>

Look at the archives.
>>
You struggle to sit up, though you don't really want to just push Zahak off. Thankfully he seems to pick up on your discomfort and quickly climbs off of you. He sits down on the floor near-by, staring at you attentively. {Come on, Papa. Pleeease? Goats are really good.}

You can't help but grin like an idiot. You wouldn't have thought that an ancient terror from the deepest depths of the Earth's crust could be quite so adorable. He's like a particularly hyper active little toddler. “I'll get you a goat later. You can understand me, right? How did you learn the language so quickly? You only meditated once!”

{Now I can! I couldn't used to, it all just sounded like noise, but then when I was laying there I started to think about it a lot. Like, really a lot. You always used to send a lot of emotions and nonsense whenever you roared like that. Then when you talk to Mother or aunt or sister or that weird thing that feels like an aunt but smells really weird, or uncle-}

You interrupt. “Right, right. Whenever I would speak with any of the others you would listen. That still doesn't explain how you managed to just learn all of this so quickly.”

He cocks his head to the side. {Well, I remember that you kept me warm in the before! I don't really remember most of what happened, but I remember you kept me warm, and I remember that you taught me things, sorta. I also remember that uncle-brother did it too. I don't really know if anyone else did it. It helped me figure things out! Because I sort of remembered, from you.}

(1/2)
>>
That didn't make a whole lot of sense, but you think it's saying that it figured out how to speak because it picked your brain whenever you would incubate the egg, and it picked it up during one of those occasions. Not improbable, you suppose. “Who is uncle-brother? Who are your aunts and sisters and mother and the rest?”

Zahak leans back, eyes squinting at you. He seems confused. {What do you mean? Uncle-brother is like you except he doesn't sun himself enough for his scales to darken. Mother is tinier, but she has really big horns! I hope mine can be even bigger someday. Why don't you have horns, Papa? Auntie is the one who looks like you except she smells like a girl. Uncle is right over there-} He inclines his head towards your Master, where he's slumped over unconscious. {-Aren't you related to them too? You all taste and smell related.}
