You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

It looks like you might be taking a trip out to the lake that was the end result of the fight between Sir Vincent and Niklaus several years ago... Elena found out about it, and pretty much demanded that she be allowed to go and see it with her own eyes.

And then you took Marianne's joke suggestion of taking a trip out there seriously, and Elena ran with it and Sir Gregory more or less gave in to his niece's request...

...oh well, it's something to do. At least it's not going to be right now. After all, Marianne's currently sick.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

You're kind of tempted to mention that Emilio might be heading over to Sir Gregory's place with Karel... though she still haven't actually agreed to it, Luciana's expectations might be the extra push that you'd need to actually make it happen.

...but then you decide not to press your luck. Karel's pretty much always kind of annoyed with you when you bug her about personal matters, and risking going past that level to outright anger is something that you'd rather not do.

"Hey Luciana," you say, noticing that it's kind of hard to turn to a girl who's leaning on you, "how're things going over at your uncle's place?" you ask.
"Er..." Luciana takes a sip of tea. "...I would say that it's 'peaceful,' but with Elena and Guillaume there, I'd be lying."
"I'd imagine so," Marianne nods.
"Rana too, now that I think of it," Luciana sighs. "She's taken to teasing Guillaume whenever she's not occupied with doing something else, and he doesn't exactly take such things well..."

You're almost afraid to ask what exactly said teasing entails.

"Aside from that," Luciana continues, "it's been the usual. Elena's running doing with that rabbit of hers, Bernard's practicing his magic with Aunt Ariane, and Uncle Gregory's as grumpy as ever."
"Of course," Marianne replies.
"And what about you, Luciana?" you ask.
"Hm?"
"I'm curious as to what you've been up to," you reply.
"She's been busy learning from Ariane how to cook, I bet. Since you're a glutton."

Ouch.

"Umm, thanks... I guess," you reply, unsure whether or not to take that as a compliment.
"And I don't want to hear that from -you-," she points at Marianne. "How much of that massive cake that Reinhold got you last month did you finish off yourself?"

Mraianne looks away and starts blushing slightly.

"Th.. .that's different," she mumbles. "And I ate that over several days, I didn't gorge myself like he does."

A sick feeling grows inside you as you remember the results of that spell that she tried out on you.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to make -that- mistake again," Luciana says, noticing your unease.

I can just imagine Mari once she got that cake back to her room. Placing it on a chair in the center of the room and drawing the curtains closed. The princess paces back and forth before the cake, telling it what she's going to do to it, saying how nobody will come to rescue it.
She shows the cake her assortment of fine cutlery, slowly drawing the edge of a knife along pastelly frosting.
>"Does it hurt when I cut you?"

"Stop bringing what up?" Marianne asks.

That's right, you never told her about that.

"I was stupid enough to agree to let her test a spell out on me," you reply. "I ended up blind, deaf and unable to move until she released it and I ended up with nightmares for like a week afterwards."

"Is that so," Marianne smirks.
"Yes, it is," she sticks her tongue out.

Luciana then goes on a long rant about the minutiae of shaping fire and how the grimoires helped her to have a better understanding of how to modify spells in order to give more control over her how they turn out, and then she shifts on a tangent about medical spells.

Eventually, the tea runs out and Luciana and Takamaru bid you farewell, leaning you and Marianne to go back to her classes. Next up is literature in the library, as the Princess was halfway through some book about the history of commerce that was boring her to tears.

You guess that even Marianne has subjects that she doesn't care to read about...

"I have etiquette lessons after this," Marianne tells you. "And then you're free to go chase after Luciana or whatever it is that you do in your free time," she says before coughing into her handkerchief.

We're pretty sure that, given her becoming withdrawn in recent years, the king was actually more concerned with a way to improve her mental state than it was with deterring kidnappers or whatnot. Helps explain his attempting to introduce an unknown variable through the conceit of that tournament rather than just recruiting one of the easy options from within, since it's not like they weren't already rotating through the Royal Guard for bodyguards on a temporary basis.

If any of them had managed to start her off the road to Hermit Princess, I suspect Reinhold would've ended up staying an army grunt.
