So, I had to work two opening shifts this past weekend. While I think i've got myself back on something approaching a normal sleeping pattern, if we end up closing early, it's because I was falling asleep on my keyboard. Sorry in advance if that happens.

The rest of the squadron is up again- it's just you, Merlin, and Wendy on the ground today. You've managed to make yourself useful in the hangar, but you really wish the flight surgeon would stop dragging his feet on clearing you for flight again.

Still, it's not all bad- your ground crew had a little celebration planned for your 40th kill- the Strigon you shot down early yesterday morning. They've got one of their most artistically gifted members cutting out a stencil for it to paint on the side of your fighter's nose- though it's running out of room up there. Eventually, they joked, they'll have to find a better place to keep them, like maybe on one of your tails. You'd laughed at first, but now you're wondering if they're right- 40 air victory silhouettes, along with some bombing mission markers and your few ground kills do take up quite a bit of space.

Of course, it's all unofficial and technically against navy regs- if you were at a stateside posting, you doubt you could keep them. Your chief said it's doing wonders for morale, though, and Ice actually agreed, going so far as to say you'd keep them as long as you could. You don't have a problem with that- other guys may have more, but no one you know of has a strigon, yet. The witches, according to the arcane and byzantine system of counting kills, don't count- all three captured ones lived, and one managed to limp back to a base. You're almost glad for that, though, to be honest- regardless of the war and all else, killing girls like that just doesn't sit right with you.

1/3 (I think)
>>
Your attention, though, isn't really on your wyvern for a change, instead being occupied by the two new fighters in the hangar, flown in just this morning.

Well, to be fair, new isn't the right word.

A pair of P-67Ds were flown in after everyone else was off by a couple of guys from a maintenance unit to the west, who'd said a pilot from your unit had pulled three of them from a boneyard and had them restored to flight worthiness to be used as base hacks up here. Both of these checked out- their airframes may be nearing 50 years old, but they're still sound, and the monster wright-cyclones in them are still in good shape. Their actual cargo space is limited- even with the fixed weapons removed and the ancient night fighting gear and radio pulled out, it's far from roomy. You figure it'll carry about as much as a full sized pickup truck, though, which is plenty enough for what you needed.

The real upside to the whole thing is that, even without being cleared by the surgeon, you can fly them. Hacks are totally supernumerary, and as long as you're not trying to take it to the front, no one really worries about where you're going with one. So long as there's a valid flight plan and you don't bust restricted airspace, you can go where ever you want or need to go.

2/3
>>
Of course, the problem with that is everyone knows that you're a pilot with time on his hands, a hack with some cargo space, and no real reason to not fly it. It's not even a day trip to head back to Berlin, and your chief has hinted that the ground crew would really, really appreciate having some good beer for a change- maybe, he said, if some beer and steaks magically appeared, they could whip together a bit of a barbeque for everyone in the squadron, here in the hangar.

He even mentioned one of the bats can be fueled up pretty quickly and lieutenant Maloney said she'd be happy to ride along and help out- her German is pretty good, afterall. Much better than yours, which is completely nonexistent, anyway. He's actually over by them now- watching a two man-team 'double check them'- for the fifth time in two hours- which is just an excuse to stand over there and shoot a meaningful glance in your direction every now and then.

Finally, he grins. “What about it, sir? They really look like they ougghta be flown, ya know? Maybe a couple hundred miles, like to Berlin and back?”

You laugh. He's persistent, if nothing else.

[] “I guess they do, chief. Let me get a flight plan sorted out, then I'll take one up for a hop.”
[] “I'm not seeing it, chief. Need a hand with the Wyvern? I wasn't exactly gentle on it, ya know.”

[x] “I guess they do, chief. Let me get a flight plan sorted out, then I'll take one up for a hop.”

You look at the two aircraft- both of them are still painted in their old Polish camouflage schemes, with the identifying numbers and registry changed. Even with extra time, the crew hasn't been able to do much to them, really, just check to make sure they're airworthy and slap on the new numbers.

Finally, you nod. “I guess they do, chief. Give me a half hour to get a flight plan sorted and filed, then I'll take one up for a hop. A barbeque might be a nice surprise for everyone, yeah?”

You're worried, for a second, his grin is gonna split his face. “Yes sir! We'll have them ready to go, just say the word when you get back!”

You laugh again and hop a ride with one of the crew back to the admin building, filing a basic flightplan- Torun South to Berlin Tempelhof, something like 230 miles, give or take- well within the internal tank range of the D model Bat. Hell, the trip itself is a little under an hour at the bat's cruise speed, even if the D, heavier than the preceding models, is slower by a good five or so miles an hour.

You take the time to drop the copies of the plan off both on the ops desk and on the boss' desk- just in case she gets back before you do, she won't have any reason to yell about that. You don't think she would, anymore, but it's better safe than sorry in this case, especially given where your base sits.

1/2
>>
You find a ride waiting for you outside the admin building- your crew is really anxious at the prospect of beer and actual, legitimate meat, not the stuff that's getting shipped up. What you're getting is probably loads better than whatever anyone on the front is, you're sure, but it's still far from the best and, while you do feel a momentary pang of conscious at the thought of enjoying good steaks while some grunt at the front picks through an MRE, you remind yourself these are the guys who's 'dog robbers' are gaining legendary status for 're-appropriating' things. Like a sling load of Budweiser beer from a depot near Poznan, flown out by an army Chinook. In short, they know how to look out for themselves too, with the assets they have.

Back at the hangar, the bats have both been wheeled out, and your chief stands in front of them, gesturing with a coffee mug while the ground crew close them both up. He turns when he hears your ride approaching, nodding at you. “Ok sir, they're both ready to go.”

2/3 (oops)
>>
You quirk an eyebrow. “You know I can only fly one, right chief?”

He laughs. “Ah, yessir, I did. But I figured you'd want to pick.” He points at the one on the left. “That one's a two seater, the old aircraft commander seat is gone. Guess it's one of the ones they had in service right up till about ten years ago in the ground attack role. She's got more space, but, well-”

“Two seater.” You say- you'd have to leave someone behind, since you noticed Merlin walking around the one on the right just a second ago.

He nods. “Yessir. The one on the right's still got all three seats, that's the only real difference between the two of them.”

The unspoken part there, is, of course, less space to load things into- the three place bat might struggle to carry everything, but at the same time, you're not so sure how well going with just one passenger would go- Merlin's gonna take some convincing to let you fly without her, and You're going to need Wendy, since you don't know any German.

[x] We'll have plenty of space if we pack it right, we'll take the three.

You look over the two aircraft, realizing it's not really a choice at all- you'll have to take the three seater. “We'll take the three, chief.” You say, walking towards it. “Any requests?”

He shakes his head. “No sir, but I heard tell there's a really good import shop on the south side of the city, specializes in American beef. Be nice to see some real Texas T-bones, ya know?”

You nod. “I'll see what I can do, chief. Beer?”

He nods, “Yes sir, beer!”

You laugh. “No, I mean what kind?”

He shakes his head with a laugh of his own. “Sir, most of these guys wouldn't know good beer if it snuck up on them and bit them in the dick. Just get whatever you can.”

You nod. “Got it.”

“Oh, here.” He stops you, handing you two thick rolls of MPC. “We, ah, took up a collection, ya know? Everyone put in something, we're not expecting any change or nothin, though.”

This is a lot of cash- probably a good couple thousand, all told. “This is an awful lot of money, chief...” You start, and he nods.

“Yessir, but the boys and me, we didn't think it was fair to be askin ya to fly out, get all this shit for us, then fly back without offerin to pay for it, ya know?” He says. “Just take it, if there's any left over, keep it, kinda our way of sayin thanks, ya know?”

Seeing clearly that he's not going to take the money back, you nod and stick it in the breast pocket on your flight suit. “Alright, chief. See you in a couple hours, then.”

He nods, smiling again. “yessir! We'll be waitin.”

“I bet you will!” you respond with a laugh, climbing up into the bat.

Merlin's already taken the second seat- in the D, that's the aircraft commander's position. Back when these things were the USAF's only day/night multirole aircraft, she'd have been a combination of the navigator, in-flight engineer, radio operator, and have control of the weapons, other than the cannons up front- and even then, she'd be the one arming them and keeping an eye on the ammo loads and status, leaving the pilot, up front, free to fly and fight. She smiles- looking kind of strange with just the radio headset on in place of her helmet. “Hi Frank!” She beams. “This is different, huh?”

You nod, grinning back. “Just a bit, kiddo. How's it all look?”

She shrugs. “Piston systems are strange, and I don't know how they kept track of all these dials and gauges and things!”

You laugh, settling down into the front seat and grabbing the stick- it's a center stick, like the tomcat was, though your throttle is still on the left- not too hard to manage. You look over your shoulder in time to catch a glimpse of Wendy as she steps over the cockpit edge and settles down into the rearmost seat- the old radar operator position.

Merlin handles start-up, just as well, you figure- while she's got to handle the fuel mixture settings, you've still got the throttles up here, and so have to listen to her directions as you start up everything, till finally the big props begin to turn over, slowly at first, then rapidly gaining speed as the old bird comes to life around you, her exhaust vents jetting flame for a minute before everything stabilizes and your chief gives you a thumbs up, one hand clamped to his hat.

2/3
>>
The big fighter glides along the ground easily, and fairly jumps into the sky- you're thankful it's not one of the early models of bat, with the manually cranked wheels.

Settling into cruise altitude, you note how good a day for flying it is- it's clear, with just some scattered clouds off to the north and east. Honestly, it's almost like out of a painting- a train follows the tracks below you, crawling eastward, and some scattered military air traffic passes by, mostly higher than you- you make out several transports, a couple of French Mirages, and a flight of F-15s heading east.

To you and Merlin, it's nothing- just a nice day to be in the air, and time to adjust to the bat. She's got a whole different set of demands than the wyvern, and you're rapidly getting used to them- small adjustments to the throttles to get the engines to purr just right.

To Wendy, though, it's apparently amazing- she finally speaks up from her seat in the back- the one with the worst view, honestly. “This is beautiful!” She says. “Is it like this whenever you fly?”

[] Well, no, this is really great weather, honestly.

I guess so.

I still remember the first time I saw that F-15C/Zephyrantes comparison shot.

[x] Well, no, this is really great weather, honestly.

“Not really, no.” You say, putting the bat into some slow turns, tying to let her sightsee a bit. “this is really great weather, honestly.”

“oh! Well, yes, I suppose.” She says. “But I mean- the power. This whole huge machine, and you can just use it whenever, go as high as you want-” She pauses.

“It is beautiful, but it's also amazing.” She says, after a second. “I should have loved to fly like this.”

You laugh. “It's still not the same as strikers.” You say- Merlin agrees from behind you. “You can do everything in those, almost, and a lot of things we cant do. You get to see more, hear more, and it all responds to just you, there's no controls or anything. It must be great to fly like that.”

“Not really.” Wendy says, quietly. “It's not like this at all. Strikers demand things from you, too. It's not like this where you could fly forever, and just watch the world below you. It takes effort and skill, and even using them to do something like this would make me tired.”

“This is amazing.” She says again, when you don't have an immediate response.

The rest of the flight is fairly quiet- Wendy's basking in the ride, and Merlin's learning the bat about as fast as she can- given how good she is with aircraft, you're reasonably sure she'll be a rated master on it by the time you land.

Berlin Tempelhof airport is, unofficially, the 'military' airport of the city, handling all flights dealing with NATO's war effort in the area, leaving the big civilian airports to the north and south free- even with a decrease in civilian traffic due to the war, both of them are fairly busy, even moreso now that the lines have returned to Poland.

1/2
>>
The bat begins to behave a bit weirdly as you land- shuddering well before it's stall speed, with the nose wanting to tuck up- though, low speed handling quirks aside, it sets down nicely, the tires squeaking on the pavement along the centerline- an almost perfect landing, really.

You follow an aircraft marshal to a spot on the tarmac occupied by a collection of other aircraft- mostly VIP transports, a few of those in US markings. You briefly wonder who's here, though you doubt it's anyone you'd know, or even see, given your destinations are mostly away from the big government buildings in the center of the city, and nowhere near the military bases on the outskirts.

You deplane without a problem, directing Wendy to let the crew know what you're here for, and you'll be loading it when you return- there's some hesitation with that, though, as she trots back up to you, Wendy assures you it's in hand.

You're able to secure a Humvee on loan- someone here has some sense, and had several assorted light vehicles made available for officers and troops visiting the town or taking care of business here, as long as you return it when you're done- which is easy enough for you, considering you'd really rather not drive back to Torun.

“W-where to first?” Merlin asks. “T-the chief said the shop he heard of was i-in the south of town, but...”

Wendy adds in- “But there's others, and closer. That shop, I’m told, is going to be the most American of them though, it's famous for bringing in your beef from the Midwest.”

“B-but it's pretty far.” Merlin says. “A-and we can visit two or t-three others if we skip it.”

[] Well, the chief did say they wanted to do a cookout or something, let's hit the one down south.
[] I think we'll get better selection if we shop around a bit, let's hit the closer ones.

With barbecue, the thing that's even more important than the meat is the smoke, the seasoning, and if it's a wet 'cue the sauce. We need to get the components of all those things.

For the meat, I’d go with beef ribs, brisket, skirt steak, and some prime rib. Also, an assortment of sausages.

I think I may be the only one not looking forward to dealing with Youngspawn.

Normally, I would find it funny but today it seems not?

Also where is bridgette? She doesn't fly jet strikers but tank ones right?
>>
>>35677266
Correct. She's a Tankwitch.
>>
>>35677266
I don't particularly like Young/Youngspawn in 89 myself.

And Bridgette is away doing secret things more than likely.
>>
>>35677287
>>35677266
To be fair, we've only met one of them, the rest could be perfectly normal.
Who am I kidding?
>>
>>35676320
>>35676276
And what makes you think the Matron of London is on her side? Seems to me that she gave us Wendy just to placate us since it was so easy to do for such a high gain.
>>
>>35677311
Bridgette is possible young spawn. Also Italian witch too.

Also Katya....
>>
>>35677311
I imagine they're roughly half and half Minna serious and Young crazy. So we could meet a serious one.

>>

She saw a shot to get rid of a pariah that nobody liked while pulling us onto her side more. She tried to get us to take another witch first, remember.

She's a hauptmann, yes.

>She is no lady

[x] Well, the chief did say they wanted to do a cookout or something, let's hit the one down south.

You dither a bit, but finally decide on the import shop to the south- specifically because that's kind of what the chief had indicated they'd prefer.

The three of you pile into the Humvee- it's one of the ones with a pickup bed in the back, and Merlin ends up sliding into the seat behind you while Wendy takes the passenger side. You're pretty sure it's out of a depot somewhere- it idles roughly, and it's got nearly a hundred and fifty thousand miles on it, with a lot of the front line equipment removed. It's got a civilian radio though- you end up surfing through the channels, trying to find something you can listen to.

The drive takes the better part of an hour, though it's a nice day for a drive- such that you don't really mind. Wendy and Merlin are both sightseeing- Berlin survived the martian war in fairly good shape, owing in large part to the huge number of dual-angle, dual-role 88mm cannon stationed in and around the city.

>>
>>35677843
It wasn't that she was a slut, sorry, I could see that it came across like that.

It was more like that Katya wasn't to picky with gender because she didn't have too many people who tried to get close since she was a relative of a war hero.
>>
>>35677808
Katya is not and was never the littlest cossack, that's Sanya.
>>

All I can recall in that regard was that her commander in Afghanistan was rather skeezy
>>
>>35677825
Now you're just making shit up. That wasn't said or implied anywhere; in fact, it was directly said that most people left her alone because of her war hero status. The only skeezy guy who tried anything tried to rape her, a dumb thing to try on a witch.
>>
>>35677870
nonono, Sanya is the Adorable Cossack, Laika is Littlest Cossack owing to literally being the littlest

Eventually, though, the old buildings of the city proper begin to give way to the newer suburbs- including your destination. About the size of large gas station back home, the place wouldn't look out of place at all in the states- even the sign out front is kind of guady, compared to the others. The parking lot is relatively empty too, only one sedan occupying a place near the door as you pull up.

You end up holding the door for an older couple, nodding respectfully to them and trying to place the faces- you feel like you know them, but can't figure out from where- though the woman's grey hair still holds streaks of a familiar shade of red. You shake it off as you step inside and they get in the car- it'll bother you, but you can always ask Ice.

The butcher- at least, you assume it's the butcher- looks up as you walk in, a smile plastered on his face and a ten gallon hat on his head. The interior of the building is done mostly in wood, and wouldn't be too out of place back home in the west somewhere- looks like someone couldn't decide between 'log cabin' and 'wild west' and just said why not both. While he greets you in German, he switches to english after wendy returns the greeting.

“Americans!” He says. “Wall, I'll be jiggered. Where y'all from? Name's Rusty, How can I help Y'all?” He grins again, and that twang screams Texas straight away. Wonder how he ended up here.

[] Good to meet you, Rusty. We've got a pretty big order, got pointed this way.

[x] Good to meet you, Rusty. We've got a pretty big order, got pointed this way.

You return the offered handshake, looking around. “Good to meet you, Rusty.” You say. “We've got a pretty big order, got told you could help us out?”

He grins and nods. “If'n it's the best damn meat in Europe, I'm your man, sir.” He says, gesturing around the shop. “I got some local, but I got some friends back home that ship some good angus out this way, just got a few hundred pounds a couple days ago.”

You pull out the rolls of MPC and set them on the counter- Rusty's eyes bug out at the cash, then he looks back up at you. “What will that get us?”

His grin is gigantic. “Fer that, sir, you tell me what ya want, and I'll get it to ya.”

You nod, allowing the smile tugging at the corners of your lips to finally show. “How about I tell you what I want to do with it, then you help me decide?”

He nods.

“See, I've got a hungry ground crew for a squadron up on the front, plus about nearly a dozen witches to feed, and we haven't had a good American steak in a long, long time.” You say. “We got to thinking about it and we'd like to do a cookout, we've got the space, but nothing to cook, not up there.”

Rusty nods again, then steps back to remove his butcher's apron and wash his hands. “You give me a minute sir, and you tell me how much space you got to work with, and we'll fix ya right up. It ain't right to let none of our fightin boys and girls want for good eats, no sir.”

Who?
>>
Eventually, you agree on a total, nearly single-handedly wiping out Rusty's stock of angus beef, plus about twenty pounds of other assorted things- ground beef, some locally-made sausage, a little bit of pork, though not much, and some chicken. Rusty seems pleased as he rings up the total, taking about three quarters of a roll of MPC to pay it off, then winking. “My math ain't so good.” He says, putting the money in the register. “I mighta let some of them T-bones slip my mind, can't rightly remember ifn they were twenty marks a pound or if it was one.”

You laugh, turning to go, but he stops you before you can leave. “How y'all gonna get that all the way back to y'alls base?” He asks. “I hope yer not plannin to leave it in that thur truck while ya get the beer and coke y'all are gonna need.”

“Well-” You start, and he cuts you off.

“Naw, naw, that dog ain't gonna hunt. Here's what we'll do. I know how to get up to the airport- yer at the one in the middle of town, yeah?”

You nod.

“Awrat. What we're gonna do is yer gonna leave all that here, and you go take care of whatever else ya need, then give me a call. Me and my boy'll drive it up and help ya load it, how bout that? We've done it a couplea times afore, them guys know us pretty well up there. Sound like a plan?”

[x] That sounds like a great plan, thanks!

You nod, pulling another 100$ MPC slip free from the roll and trying to pass it to him. “That sounds like a great plan, thanks!”

Rusty shakes his head, refusing the money. “Naw, y'all don't need to pay me for that. I figure we're more than even, my boys were both at the battle of Berlin, ya know?” He grins, indicating you and the witches- “Ifn it weren't fer boys and girls like you, maybe they wouldnta come home. The volk woulda got mauled if them dreadnaughts got in above 'em.” He wipes his hands on the front of his shirt. “So delivering yer beef is the least I can do fer ya.”

“I don't suppose you'd know where I could go to get the Beer I'm going to need?” You ask.

He laughs. “Wall, the stuff they brew here ain't quite shiner, but it's awrat. There ain't really any place round these parts for just beer, not like y'all would be needin, but they's a grocery store right round the corner over there, they ougghta have what ya need.” He points down the road- you can see the building he means above the tree line. “I don't rightly know if they take this though,” He says, indicating the MPC. “If they don't, ya give ol rusty a call, I'll come over and help ya out.”

You nod again. “We really appreciate it, sir.”

He waves that off. “Hall far, ya ain't gotta call me sir. I work fer a livin!” He laughs. “Y'all just call me if ya have any trouble. “

You don't, though you do end up getting some strange looks, buying several cases of canned beer- you suspect the folks around here don't drink beer quite the same way they do back home. You're also able to grab several cans of coke, thankfully- most of the witches don't drink, you think, and even if the ones that can do, there's still more than a few who still can't.

Your drive back to Berlin Tempelhof takes somewhat longer, traffic is picking up, though you still get back with enough time that you're reasonably sure you can get the stuff back to base before the squadron is due back. You're stopped at the gate by the guards, who examine your ID cards, then check your load, earning you a strange look. Wendy explains it, and they wave you on, allowing Rusty and his son through without too much trouble, though they do inspect the delivery van before allowing them through the gate.

The butcher and his son follow you out onto the flight line, looking up at the bat as you unlock the panels for storage. “That's a pretty lookin airplane, son.” Rusty says, then looks at it again, and back at the truck. “You sure it'll be able to carry all this?”

[x] We'll just have to get creative with loading, that's all.

You grin, unhooking one of the cargo nets strung to the inside of the old gun bay someone - probably correctly- figured it might not be a great idea to have the cargo inside resting directly on the hatch, and that loading anything in a bottom-loading cargo bay would be decidedly difficult without being able to switch gravity off.

At some point, you think you don't really remember buying all this meat, and you certainly don't remember buying any of the buns being loaded either- but given how happy Rusty looks, you can guess where they came from.

Eventually, Wendy has to sit down, carrying several cases of drinks on her lap, with a few bottles of schnapps down by her feet- she looks kind of overwhelmed. Finally with Rusty's son Billy's help, you close and latch both cargo hatches on the bottom of the aircraft- the space behind Wendy filling up with the last few cases of drinks. Once they're loaded, there's absolutely no room in the fighter at all- even Merlin's got a few cases around her seat and next to her legs, and there's another couple bottles of schnapps in her lap. You're the only one without anything occupying your part of the office except yourself- and that's only because a bottle under a rudder pedal could prove disastrous.

Finally, you stand back, noting that the bat fairly creaks with the cargo- at least nothing's leaking, you think. Rusty nods to himself. “Looks about rat, son. You gonna be able to git it off the ground with all that extra weight there?”

You nod. “Yeah, I mean, that's what? Just around a hundred pounds of meat? Not even? Hell, this thing could carry thousand pound bombs, back in the day, she was a dedicated fighter-bomber. Bet I could get it off the ground on just one of those wrights, wanna see me try?”

He laughs. “Naw son, you ain't gotta do that. Just be safe, come back in sometime, hey?”

You nod, returning the offered handshake. “it was nice to meet you, Rusty. You take care.”

He smiles. “You too, son. Hey, I didn't wanna ask earlier, didn't wanna worry ya none, but are you Frank Bishop?”

So, there'll never be a chance that after a particularly dangerous, tiring mission, you won't see Kenji rushing to the cockpit as soon as the Wyvern's settled down, practically ripping off the canopy to see if Merlin's alright, helping the ground crew to hoist both Frank and her out of the plane and to a bunk for the docs to look over.

And we'll never see him sort of hover around Merlin in the sickbay, periodically disappearing to grab drinks or do his time in the hangar before dutifully returning to her side. And he'll just be sort of quiet as Merlin talks to him about stuff, periodically glancing over to Frank, lying there unconscious and being fussed over by every other witch in Spellcaster.

And you'll never get to see what happens as the night rolls over and as the base settles in for the nightshift, where Kenji has to pull his turn on duty or head off for his own down time, and he gives her a quick peck on the lips, wishes her a good night and slowly, hesitantly leaves the sickbay, leaving Merlin alone with her pilot (and whoever's inevitably sleeping at his side).

And you'll never see the time when Merlin wakes up in the middle of the night, thirsty as hell, only to notice Kenji slumped over her blankets, a large bottle of water standing on the small table next to her that wasn't there before. Or how she gently brushes his hair and manoeuvres his head into a more comfortable position in her lap as he mumbles apologies half-asleep as she does so.

And you'll never see Merlin in a quiet place, a smile on her lips, close to two of her most precious men in the world, before slipping away into the welcome embrace of sleep once more.

I get a kick out of this gif every time I see it. Zero pilots in WWII would actually attempt this sort of thing in combat when their guns jammed or were otherwise unable to keep fighting. I imagine in most cases it brought down both planes involved, but often the American planes survived thanks to their heavy armor. The zeros, however, were designed without a shred of armor to improve speed and maneuverability, and shattered on impact.
(which the zero completely lacked)
>>
>>35681288
>doesn't have a long survival rate or decent bombload.

Is this the First Tier-II He-111, or the later T-III and up ones?

'cause the Tier 2 one is shite, yes, but then you get the glorious Ju-88A, and then the later He-11s after that have actual decent bombloads; albeit still fragile.
>>
>>35681306
I think you misunderstand what I mean.

I love the american heavy machine gun but the German's defensive armament of the He-111 is which I hate which I think it's a 7.62mm of the MG14
>>
>>35681290

You nod with a laugh. “Yeah, that's me.” You say, looking over at the old guy, who half-closes one eye and nods.

“I thought so!” He says, shaking your hand again and pulling you into a back-slapping hug. “My boys wouldn't be around ifn it weren't fer you and that French boy, whashisname. The one in the tanks.”

“Jean-luc?” You ask, and the old man nods again.

“Thas him!” He says. “Y'all boys are doin good work out there, I want y'all to know that. Mebby the opinion of an old Texan butcher don't matter none, but there it is. You keep on keepin them girls safe, keep winnin, and you'll always have a home in Texas, ya hear?”

“But I'm not from Texas!” you say with a laugh.

He shrugs. “Can't be perfect, son, wouldn't be fair. You take care now, ya hear? And come back and visit sometime, I'm sure the grandkids and the missus would love ta meet ya!”

You mount up fairly quickly, laughing briefly at the look Wendy gives you from under the pile of food and drink resting on her lap- she's belted in, of course, and can't really move, but she won't complain about it. “C-could you help me?” She asks as you sit down, causing you to stand back up and turn around, one boot out on the fuselage.

She looks at her radio headset pitifully. “I can't seem to get it on my head.” She says, trying to reach around the pile with one hand, just brushing it with her fingers. You laugh and shake your head, putting it on her head for her- she reaches up to adjust it and smiles.

Merlin just gives you a thumbs up from her seat when you tap her on the head, so you sit back down and slide the canopy forward to it's latches.

Merlin fires the big wright-cyclones up, their vibrations sending crazy ripple effects through the canopy plexiglass before they settle into their rhythm, and you're in the air a scant few minutes after that, having to wait for a Paris-bound VIP jet ahead of you.

Once airborne, you turn eastbound, following one of the few corridors to aircraft headed to the frontline airbases- while Polish airspace, at least in the liberated areas, is fairly secure, there's plenty of rumors of Soviet stealthwitches floating around- enough that staying well inside the polish air defense zone is in your best interests.

Wendy is quiet on the trip back, along with Merlin- not much to say, and Wendy seems to prefer sightseeing anyway. Torun south is still quiet when you land- the other bat is still outside the hangar, though you can't see your ground crew, and the polish and German hangars are all empty.

Still, the chief emerges with a couple of his crew as you taxi up and unlatch the canopy.

“How'd it go, sir?” He asks, looking first at you, then at the Bat.
