16th day of Prophecy, Athena Pàla of Zipangu, afternoon.

The south of Zipangu stretched a previously lawless area dominated by Onis; the very history itself of the great island revolved around these singulars demons that never quite left despite incessant conflicts with civilisation, the oldest record concerning the Onis stretch as far back as the War of Pretenders where they were described as a cannibalistic, violent, gluttonous war-like folks indulging in occult rituals ranging from blood magic to necromancy, with many a scholar blaming these ancestors for the creation of Machitehew itself. Whilst I can’t pretend to know the truth there’s no denying the sheer wariness the regular folk of the island have toward these demons, which is probably why the lizards clans were welcomed with open arms in the first place; only my people managed to beat these strong colorful women and even then it was only a success on paper for, just like the incessant pursuit of excellence amidst lizardmen, one simply cannot ‘’tame’’ Onis.

I’ve seen it for myself during my short stay down south, the general area separating Tsukiyomi domain from Mebuchednazi’s is dubbed as the «Spirited Waste» because of the sheer amount of battles erupting amongst its denizens despite the richness of the land and the proximity of the water clans filling the lizards coffers with trades – which is rabidly sunk into funding the army or the newly created smuggling line for bringing in (willing) males onto the island but that’s a story for another day.
>>
Suffice to say «south» is just about the most intense area of Zipangu because civilisation itself is raw; Tsukiyomi and Ame-no-Uzume prowess of magic alongside the excellence of the Shining Knights and the dread of the Mantises hold no sway down there. But to say they aren’t an important part of politics as a whole is dead wrong, with the vast majorities of Onis subjugated it’s easier to think as south, central and north Zipangu as independent clans even if only Ame-no-Uzume and Rhy Rahall domains are truly recognized by most inhabitants.

I’ve only been there twice; once for my exile and the second was a few weeks ago (it already feels like a few months) where my sin of betrayal was judged by the sacred art of trial by combat and of course, my sword arm was sliced cleanly off; next would have been my head if it weren’t for my queen. It may have taken some time for me to be truly grateful for her actions, but from today forth I know, in my heart of heart, that this third visit isn’t chained in dread and guilt, only made possible by her rejection of traditions to save me, her retainer.

--

The decision to actually go down there was probably as impromptu as the crazy ideas Siegfried keep on coming with and it wasn’t popular with anyone, especially Tanuya ‘’Tanu’’ Hoaxl, nevertheless I wasn’t going to take no for an answer and in order to prove her innocence she decided to come along despite her still healing wounds, requesting a simple staff as self-defence weapon when my ambition became certain reality.
>>
Barging inside the strategic room where Ame, Gil, Rhy and her…sister? Were busy strategizing the oncoming battle wasn’t the nicest or wisest move thankfully my queen was always a magnanimous one and forgave the transgressing after proper explanations; the preparations for the journey took a full hour, during which I had absolutely zero update on the progress of Kyorn and the spymaster; at least my interruption provided a good enough chance for them to grab the catqueen attention and I made sure to keep all mention of Siegfried to myself; with Tsu, Mana, Daiyu, Sieglinde and (no doubt) Hadraniel I simply can’t imagine a more competent team to help him out.

Yes, I’m not worried at all.

The mission was simple enough and could actually provide a boon for the leading trio of the alliance; with Mebuchednazi in serious convalescence having someone else capable of representing the southern tribes would be ‘’handy’’ (Ame put it like that) but as far as I’m concerned I’m doing this for the telepathic worm, the only thing (or person) capable of truly proving peoples innocence with our infiltrator conundrum, in a way that maybe even the Demon Lord cannot ascertain; remembering that big worm existence felt a bit like a stroke of genius and provided the –perfect- excuse to go down there.
I’m not stupid enough to let emotions blind me to my purpose but I do have a few scores to settle, and not only over that damnable duel either.

Not that I was going down there with a wounded merchant for company, Sylphis was all but a requirement and didn’t so much as grumble when I asked despite Siegfried serious condition – I know something important happened to her very recently and I wasn’t there to witness it, maybe this trip could allow us some time to talk.
>>
Besides, there’s none better to watch my back in a potentially treacherous land. The others additions tough, was all but imposed by Ame-no-Uzume; with Kyorn obviously busy and Siegfried ‘’indisposed’’ I had to take two other peoples to make certain of our safety alongside a handful of ofudas; the added company was none other than Zechariah and his constant slime companion, Aurore.

Something didn’t escape my attention; Ame whispered something to Zechariah about making the slime ‘’battle-ready’’ whilst giving the swordsman a few magical scrolls.

--

This finally bring us to present time following the all-too-convenient magical portals; Ame hadn’t stepped down south once before our journey to create the alliance but this time, thankfully, she could make the trip twice as fast by creating a golden tear just about next of the capital of Swapnil – old language euphemism for ‘’dreamlike’’ the sole newest city of the territory made by Onis labors and Lizardman leadership.

Of course, the first thing that struck my memory was the heat; Zipangu was an island of eternal autumn but down there it felt like summer until nightfall where things finally cooled down enough for comfort, the heavy duty garbs and armor of our procession already felt out of place in the heat; at first I thought the screaming were cicadas but our obvious interruption caught more than a few people completely unaware. We emerged on a deserted balcony atop the main pyramidal structure forming the heart itself of the city; one of the very first stone structure of Swapnil it was made to house the grand sorceress (namely, Mebuchednazi) and a way to truly mark the new dominion of the people estranged from their homeland and thus, probably the only building made with lizard architecting style; the rest of the city sported structures much more inherent-looking to Zipangu, albeit made in wood.

‘’Pfeh!’’
>>
I heard Sylphis breath out a combination of disgust and frustration under her hood, she insisted on grabbing a long sleeved hooded cloak and is obviously starting to regret it but at least it concealed her arms and head, not that any of the hard-looking folks peering upward would mind; the entire crowd consisted of a mixture of overtly large colored, horned Onis and smaller yet perpetually scowling lizardwoman, some of them whispering to one another here and there but our ragtag bunch didn’t seem to hold interest as everyone down there quickly went back to business with only a few red Onis waving toward us once my eyes crossed with theirs.
Magic isn’t very popular here, but there are always a few odd ones fascinated by every phenomenon’s.

‘Say, Athena I know I’m late to ask but you’re doing fine, right?’’

Zechariah spoke, undeterred by the heat and change of scenery whilst the slime on his shoulder took a strangely pensive stance, gazing downward to the populace. When I recall, the last time I saw Zechariah must have been after the ritual, unfortunately, before I could assuage his worry our troupe, alas, was interrupted.

‘’You there! State your business!’’

A duo of green scaled, hard looking lizardwoman came to a stop after slipping out of the only entryway leading to our balcony, both of them armed with wicked-looking scimitars and big, round wooden shield with leather harness on their back holding three javelins, just about the normal wear for city guards, realization strike them both as they lay eyes upon me and a smug smile almost make it across my lisps ; I’ve done away with side cape or any attempts to hide this amputated arm of mine, I doubt my reputation disappeared overnight; last time everyone stayed their tongues thank to Ame-no-Uzume presence but that luxury, alas isn’t with us now.

My liege still gave me her sole signet ring usually bestowed to agents speaking on her behalf, so that ought to shut them up…
>>
‘’Damnation, you traitor dare soil the grounds of-‘’

‘’Piss off, cunts’’

…well yes I should have expected that Sylphis wouldn’t exactly take any insults toward me lying down, tension rose and nearly exploded when the guards unsheathed their weapons, provoking jeers, boos and hoots of excitement from a newly forming crowd consisting mainly of Onis.

‘’Oh boy…’’

Zechariah whispered, trying his best to clamp his hands around the wiggling slime ready to go ballistic, the poor thing could only wiggle in his grasp now.

‘’Your case was already made clear, Swapnil shall no longer suffer your presence yet you dared come again, sully not‘’

Jeez I forgot how much lizards loved to speak of old laws, I’ve only brought a shield with me but I shut up the girl by thrusting my arm forward, making the duo twitch in aggression which is in turn mirrored by Sylphis who immediately unclasp her scythes, taking a low stance; tattoos across her body lighting up in blue, I can already see the beads of colds sweats on the lizards which only increase once Zechariah silently unsheathed half of his sword, its holy nature already projecting magic and glowing on its own. Meanwhile, Tanuya moved behind me.

>’’Let’s just get this over with, I’ve got business with Amarantha Amisi, just look at the ring and lead us there.[No need to be overtly nasty…]
>’’Sorry for you, but this traitor is here to stay on official orders. Remove us if you can. [Southerners like a good fight and we’ll be saving face; if they get angry we have every right to defend ourselves. There’s an audience already…I don’t think Tanuya is going to like this]
>Something else?
>>
>>35224621
If we turn this into a fight, is it going to be a formalized 1-on-1 surrender/first-blood deal, or less formal?

By the way Zechariah is getting ready, and as our specialist on Southern culture, he seems to be indicating that fighting to prove our right is the correct action; this correct?
>>
>>35224621
Is there any way to indicate that Tanu is exempt from fighting due to injury? Or would that make us lose face?
>>
>>35224883
Until first blood or dominion is made, 1 on 1 between Athena and a guard could do or a 2 on 2 between people of your choice would also do.
>>35224920

She's visibly wounded, you won't lose face by keeping her away from a fight, it's also rather apparent she's not exactly gutsy enough to crack some skulls right now.

Should I make a roll between choices or wait some more?

Ohoh, seems the reputation of our companions precedes them. It seems Zech and Sylphis want to fight so, if a 2v2 duel will settle the issue, I say we let them have their fun.

And here it is.

Thank for your dilligence my friend. I think we should be able to go back to our regular schedule this week.

Seem like the popular choice is for a little fight, I'll try to be swift in writing, but it's also a perfect opportunity to reveal Sylphis abilities in story...

The South is a 'might makes right' culture, so Tanu is going to have to suck it up and deal with it.

So Athena only has a shield. Fighting is going to consist of blocking and smashing, with a bit of bashing.

That or you can have Zech and Sylphis fight them in a good old fashioned duel, which is the popular choice from what I've seen, so I'm writing with that in mind.

You're going to have Sylphis and Zechariah fight Athena's fight for her?
That's got cultural repercussions for that decision.

1-on-1 duel between Athena and one of the guards is still what I advocate. There are cultural connotations to consider.

Also if you guys have any reservation about that 2-on-2, remember that people down south respect all kinds of strengths, someone that convince strong warriors to fight on their behalf is yet another from of that so not having Athena beat them isn't really that big a deal in term of charisma.
>>
Rolled 13 (1d20)

>>35225682
So one's strength is also shown in who one leads, as the strong should have no time for the weak and/or allow the "weak" to fight battles for them. Thus, the victories of underlings reflect positively upon their leader and their defeats reflect poorly right?

Yes. There's no all encompassing ''Strength'' for the south, only multitude of traits that people respect.

The only real thing people don't like is disloyalty and lying; cunningness isn't really appreciated down there but as long as you've been proven honorable then you're in the clear. A leader can be widely respected even if he/she is of poor health and weak physique because not being ''strong'' of arm doesn't rob them of charisma or intelligence; more often than not strength of character end up as the most valued traits for the Onis, not so much for lizards.

‘’I’ll say this only once; we are on official business sent by the leaders of the alliance to meet with Amarantha Amisi’’

I knew by their attitude it’d be fruitless to even attempt negotiations but let it be known that I tried; I made sure to talk loudly, projecting my voice down below, which only managed to stretch the tension to a new breaking point with Tanuya whispering a prayer to the dragon and shuffling closer to my back, an increasing crowd was stopping to observe our little scene up upon the balcony now and I heard a few laugh when one of the lizard stomping the ground in response to my announcement.

‘’Our leaders are currently in an important debate with that Oni and I’ll be damned if we let a traitor interrupt them’’

In response her partner unsheathed her scimitar, Tanuya immediately moved toward the edge of the balcony whilst tapping the ground with her staff, down below something of a chant had already started, deep voices rumbled in synch like faraway drums; the vast majority of observant were Onis but there wasn’t any escaping of a fight now, else face for the entire alliance is lost down here.

‘’Yes, you’ll be damned – both of you’’

Blades slid out of their scabbards; the other guard scimitar swiftly came out and both ladies already took a stance, pressing their shields forward in synch as Zechariah took out the rest of his blade and twirled it slightly, warming up his wrist and turned toward me; we simply exchanged a brief glance and he handed me the little slime wordlessly which I took in my hand, the little creature had grown docile already and nestled gently in my palm, feeling gooey yet dry, not even splashing my skin yet voiced small mouthed encouragement toward her «prince», nearly tramped by the increasingly large crowd war chant.

"Should've known talking would be out of the question."

I heard him mutter, probably not intending for anyone to hear.

Sylphis seemed already ready to draw blood; her scythes shifted for battle, nearly cutting through her sleeves whilst the hood fell backward, revealing the green exoskeleton around her face along with the pair of long antennas; if the presence of a mantis was surprising nobody made it known, the lizard were already ready to jump for combat but their tension only increase when the tattoos across Sylphis body suddenly light up like Focus, glowering blue, forming strange spirals, wave-like patterns; I couldn’t identify them anymore because I had to move out of the way, but to say I wasn’t excited to observe my sister would be a lie.

I didn’t had to announce anything or whom would fight whom; it was clear it’d be a battle of partners and the foes moved out of the entryway and into the large balcony, making the drum-like chant disappear in near-perfect synch as battle was already joined for every observant. Tanuya came at my side next, leaving the empty border of our elevated refuge while tightening her grip on the staff, nervousness adding a blanket of sweat on her skin while the slime in my hand pumped up and down, obviously much more excited.

‘’That’s how things work down there, huh?’’

The Tanuki asked me and I simply smiled; her voice was low, yet ruptured the completely silent atmosphere. I’ve heard of others barbarous civilisation losing themselves in chants and cries during «friendly» combat but that didn’t happened here, even street duel was something to observe in respectable silence.

With Sylphis and Zechariah side by side, they formed a very unlucky duo; I heard little sis whisper something to the swordsman and he gave the very briefest of nod, then she put her scythes in a criss-cross and battle was joined.

…and over in seconds.

Sylphis, quite simply, disappeared, not even leaving behind her cloak; her entire person became engulfed in some strange smoky phenomenon and –rushed- forward like an arrow, leaving behind a brief afterimage of what I can only describe as ‘’magic’’ as she somehow reappeared behind the leftmost lizard, already having made a turn to face her, swinging down a scythe to block the oncoming scimitar as the assaulted warrior whirled despite astonishment, she was already forced to stop the shield slap when the mantis scythe fell upon her neck; Sylphis having closed the distance to render them nearly able to wrestle, the battle was already over on Zechariah side when the opposing warrior complained of «witchcraft!».

The swordsman had already rushed forward but was, obviously, not quite as fast as Sylphis but the distance between him and the other lizard was less than a meter – Sylphis provided more than enough distraction to destabilise his foe – but she recognized the threat he posed and met him blade for blade, the duel didn’t last despite my own confidence in the demanding trainings of lizard warriors. For a moment they simply deflected one another strike but the young man (well he does look young) closed the distance despite the shield of his foe who took advantage of that to try and slap him away, yet he stood his ground by bracing his shoulder then struck the scimitar with his weightier long sword, forcing the lizard to twirl her wrist downward to distribute the weight and attempt a vicious upward slice that he dodged with a literal hair breath – I don’t think I’d even have the same kind of sheer guts - . The moment Sylphis finished with her foe, Zechariah already took a step forward, grab the lizard wrist with his free hand, twisted his own sword hand and brought redemption for a close slice with the guard unarmoured armpit, bringing the duel to a close – every observant would obviously know he’d need a simple slice to cripple his foe.

Probably less than ten seconds; Aurore signed in dejection while Tanuya mouth hanged open, I even heard some admirative whisper down below, nobody expecting things to be so swift. There was no need for big ‘’victory’’ scream or any arbiter, the sheer dominance of our side was all too clear.

>Anything to say, or should I simply try to be gracious?

‘’With respects to tradition and under the guise of our wise ancestors let us end this trial by sacred combat’’
Messengers shouldn’t have to earn right of passages but things always get complicated when you are a traitor; last time Ame-no-Uzume commanded more than enough authority to command respect despite my presence, there won’t be such luxury this time but I’m not going to hide away in guilt either.
--
Twice in the same month have I stood inside the sole pyramid of Zipangu, an area made adopting lizardwoman architectural style to the letter, everything was made from a mixture of wood and finely cut stones; magic and Onis expedited construction greatly, everything felt as neat and tough as the constructs in the jungle, rooms spread out incessantly in the halls as each floors accommodated numerous different room, from magical libraries to specialised training cells, this entire place had been apparently drawn by the ground up by Mebuchednazi to be the heart of the exiled lizard people and there isn’t any doubt that its true. It was a rare mixture of tradition and innovation, no pyramid back in the old home held as much space; an entire knightly order could easily train every one of its members without seeing the light of the sun.

I preferred to avoid lingering too much else my heart squeeze in unwanted feelings, everyone else were impressed by their surrounding (there was a distinct regal feelings to the interiors despite its pragmatism), I didn’t need to raise my voice; Tanuya was obviously too dreary of southerners to leave my side and the recent wins of the newly created duo didn’t mount to their hands, the slime went back to Zechariah and he kept a prudent hand on the hilt of his sword while Sylphis kept the rear guard as we ascended the inner stairs toward the debate room at the very top, all this while observed by every patrolling lizards, each and every single one giving me a murderous glare – we’d probably be stopped for another duel or two if I didn’t press the march.
--

‘’Ah…ah…dammit how big is this…?’’

Our merchant-suspect was lagging behind in the stairs and I actually felt tempted to lend my shoulder if her plaint wasn’t in synch with our actual arrival; it was a bit of a journey in of itself to mount all these stairs but we finally arrived in front of a pair of heavy-looking stone doors guarded by a pair of staunch lizards, both of them garbed in actual armor instead of leather; lamellar covered their bodies while they held short spears and large bronze-looking shield covered in obvious runes with obsidian mask concealing their faces.

These were the honor guards of the noble houses of lizardmen, a near dying breed down south and just about the best warriors I’ve ever seen; rarely did they simply stood guard anywhere, but the muffled voice behind them was enough of a reason to explain why; a debate was going on and one of the nobles must have insisted to have them here.

They are a definite problem as they tend to completely ignore the general culture of the south; duty is the only worth with these bodyguards and if I know my own damn reputation we might simply have to muscles our way through again.

These lizards are different and only respect duty, not strength, as Athena said. Therefore, it's better to appeal to their sense of duty.
As in, their duty to their liege is to look to her best interests, and a Commonwealth-level strategic message is of high enough importance to disrupt a previous debate.

‘’We’ve come on official business from the leaders of the alliance to meet with Amarantha Amisi, as you can see with this official signet of my liege. Even with the debate, I will not allow us to be stopped, there’s much more pressing matters at hands.’’

I gave my shield to Tanuya and took the precious ring from my pocket and stepped closer to the pair, their eyes immediately stuck to the depicted dragon in the signet and for a moment I felt they were about to skewer me; a sharp, sudden rise of tension that didn’t escape Zechariah and Sylphis for both nearly jump for combat right then and there; thankfully one of them nodded and, with a grave voice, announced.

‘’Step forward then, all of you’’

It took some effort to avoid sighing right then and there; no doubt aggressiveness would have led to something drastic, it’s hard to remember the purpose of these honor guards; with the same intensity, the other three came to my sides, with Tanuya taking the rear, breathing in loudly a few time before finally settling her nervousness, she not good at being a center of such attention I see, or maybe she’s simply intimidated by the south; stepping into a debate is a big breach of conducts and already the muffled voice could almost be heard when the guards took to opening the doors by pushing them inward, not an easy looking task as they grounded and protested loud enough to be heard over the orators.

‘’…No guarantee, none! They’ve already struck the north lands and we are –not- as prepared for unlike them we do not know when they will attack again! If the Alliance is so bent on ending the conflict then let them bleed for it, we still haven’t fully recovered from the Demonic War!’’

A few women were standing, obviously the ones to take stands; this was the orating room, large and mostly empty with pillars supporting the large roof atop the very pyramid built like some kind of oversized outer garden thank to the healthy vegetation’s spot for decorations, rows of benches formed a large rectangle with an obvious chair for the unanimous leader; it was actually empty and our arrival barely halted the lizards.

‘’The Grand Sorceress nearly fell to assassination inside the very frontline fortress of our ally; whilst too soon to pull out our reinforcement for the second-wave of the battle we should still pull back at least a full third of our armed force to properly guard over our leader, our people are already growing discontent to have an Oni as figure head’’

You didn’t have to be a warrior to lead your house and the two orating lizards didn’t project that kind of force; they were arrayed in a mixture of gold, obsidian light armor that was much more ceremonious in nature, both of them sporting light red scales they were standing amidst rows of sitting compatriot facing a rather somber numbers of grim-looking, colored Onis, all of them tall and large enough to avoid the need to standing to speak; the very middle of the room sported a most unique duo.

I’ve never seen Amarantha Amisi but I heard the rumour; human looking in stature and physique and there wasn’t any denying this, only the pair of horns (with one of them cut) sticking out of her forehead told her progeny. Her skin had the color of peach, her hair dark blue kept short for ease of use and her eyes – once turned toward us (alongside everyone else) showed bright, spirited rubies burning with emotions and purpose – obviously she was pissed, hopefully not by our interruption.

Beside her was a living giant, a pillar of flesh standing well over three meters, a monster in every senses of the word it dominated the very room by its presence; its skin a sickening green, it was a worm the size I’ve never seen with a perpetually open mouth with what looked like –two- jaws full and full of teeth, globs of sticky spit crawling down its large body and sticking to it. It stood beside Amarantha with a good half of its lower body coiling around, as if attempting to impede any and all prospect of walking away for the smaller Oni and for a moment, my eyes crossed with its as its immense body twisted in our direction; it was a row of strange, glowering orb shifting between pale green and bright blue and I felt a strange «buzz» in the back of my head, which immediately caused the creature inner jaw to snap loudly, provoking a large «thomp» that immediately forced everyone to silence, at least, momentarily.

‘’…!’’

‘’Zechy, ssh…’’

I heard a grunt from the swordsman, thankfully the slime shushed him and without delay out troupe made it inside, boots clanging and reverberating loudly in the deadly silent room with only the breathing of the worm to accompany our steps, every eyes falling on me with only the Onis staying to observe the rest of the company, many of them raising eyebrows and a few even stood up.

‘’We’ve come on-‘’

‘’No! You!’’

Here goes, not even time to explain my damn business… One of the silent lizard stood up, a salamander whose tails erupted in cackling flame to accompany the anger in her face, she pointed directly in my direction, powerful voice trampling any protests. I knew that one, Water Dragon be my witness, for I hate her with all of my being.

‘’We’ve already dealt with you and your queen! You’ve been banished from our soil yet dare to show thyself again despite your loss!? Is the alliance INSULTING us now, as if the failure of protecting our Grand Sorceress wasn’t enough!?’’

She’s the sister of the champion I fought and lost to and the main leader that pushed for combat. One of Minwee direct lieutenants, she oversee many of the operations in the jungle before the exodus and obviously never forgave my betrayal, before that she kept rubbing my ‘’privilege existence’’ in my face every time Minwee looked away; seeing her this upset made me smile and I couldn’t resist showing it. The newly throbbing pain in my missing arm nearly made me cackle but that, at least, I kept it from erupting.
‘’Are you here for Final Judgement!? Why do you dare insult-‘’

‘’SILENCE’’

The little Oni voice boomed, her face growing rid as she spit out the word in a near scream; obviously much, much younger than everyone else present barring Sylphis she did carry some authority but it wasn’t enough.

‘’No! You demons have your practices and in turn we have our own, she’s a living insult to everything my people went through and-‘’

A booming roar forced true silence in the room, something beyond cavernous or booming, a sound beyond description erupted from the giant worm, cascading into the city itself it roared with the intensity of a dragon; stealing the breath of everyone inside, be it Onis or out little troupe of (near) veteran, a few of the nobles leaders even slapped their hands on their ears pitifully.

‘’No, us lizards have endured the travesty of a traitor once and obeyed the will of the Onis by listening to you, chieftain but we won’t be spat upon! At least I won’t! Remember who the conquerors are’’

‘’You!’’

One of the Onis on the far bench facing them slapped her hand on the stone, rupturing them but once more the worm roared; this time, Tanuya fell to her knees clinging to her ears, trembling in fear and everyone finally fell silent…only momentarily, protest were just about ready to erupt anew.

It seems my presence was the needed spark for the keg, Mebuchednazi absence hurt.

What's the protocol for calling someone out for a duel, and would such a thing be normally seen as being definitive to end a feud, regardless of what the loser may believe?

What about the protocol for engaging a person (Sister of Champion) who has openly fomented rebellion against the legitimate leader (Amarantha)?

This would be something that Athena should know in-character, but we wouldn't, so information about this, and what she would know of the possible repercussions of such, would be appreciated.
>>
>>35230747
Yeah, we need some more information.

Ok failed to protect the Anubis? How so? She's still alive (unlike the other seal keepers) despite a perfect infiltration by an assassin who just so happened to be an Alpha Werewolf. We even captured the bitch. I have a hard time seeing that as a failure.

Unless she's talking about the other seal keepers' deaths resulting in her comatose state. In which case I'd like to see if she would have done a better job considering all those bitches had going for them, because I doubt it.

>>35230747

Does Athena know that the buzzing she experienced was Amarantha's mother's telepathic screening?

I recall thinking about specific memories and concentrating on thoughts made them easier for her to telepathically pick up.

We could try to get her attention and give her a memory dump so that she's brought up to speed on why we're here and why we want her to come with us.

Also, she's a telepath and the former Queen of the Oni, so I want to ask her how we can help put the Lizards in their place here and get them march in line with everyone else in the Commonwealth.
Since she's a telepath, the thoughts should be inserted right into Athena's head.
>>

That's the same as saying that the Secret Service still did their jobs, even though they let an armed and dangerous attacker get through most of their security details and into areas where the President and the First Family were residing.

For duels, you can call out the result of the previous one, remember Athena was poisoned before the fight, so saying you were and that the perp corrupted the practice of Sacred Trial would call for another duel because you’ll raise one HELL of an uproar. You’ll have to figure out a way you speak cold, hard truth.

As for your second question, accusing someone of rebellion is just about the most serious of crimes and goes hand in hand with disloyalty, remember that Salamander is championing the cause of the lizards, not the Onis so saying she’s rebellious right now will need hard facts, mere implications isn’t enough – this is the still living divide between Onis and Lizardwoman.

You could try actually appealing to the Onis, if you think it’s wise, as they believe in honor; if you believe in Athena orating skill, you could try a debate with the champion sister.

If my explanation is confusing, please say so.

>>35230853

>Ok failed to protect the Anubis? How so?

Nobody knows she was the last seal, so everyone think she's been grieviously wounded. Remember politics/nobles do not exactly care about fairness.

>>35230858
>Does Athena know that the buzzing she experienced was Amarantha's mother's telepathic screening?

She's been briefed on the worm capabilities. So memory dumping will work, if things can calm down at least, she's a bit protective of her daugther.

Okay, that's a subtle distinction that needed cultural context to understand, which the players didn't have but that the character did.
At least now we know.

The testimony of the former Queen is not enough, even though she's a telepath, right?
Does Athena have any evidence of the poisoning from then?

That was an entire series of events that happened off-screen for the players, but which the character was intimately involved with.
In this case I think it best if you give us some suggestions on courses of action based upon what Athena knows, as well as a basic outline of the events around the poisoning and the people involved.

Cool. We do have a few options, so long as trial by combat can be resolved by having someone fight in Athena's place. I don't think we're going to able to just talk the Salamander down. Pretty sure we're going to have to get violent at some point in most any plan we come up with.

>The testimony of the former Queen is not enough, even though she's a telepath, right?

Being a telepath isn't something the lizard can just ignore, you could try appealing to the lizards aside from the salamander to at least try with the worm so you can prove your point.

>Does Athena have any evidence of the poisoning from then?
None - there's a sacred drink to take before every battle which can be refused if the combatant wish to. It was spiked with a soporific, resulting in Athena giving a lackluster fight ending up in a loss of limb and Ame nearly killing the opposite champion to save her retainer. There’s no proof, only memory, Athena knows very well what happened as does Ame, if there were tangible proofs you can expect our fluffy queen would have nearly burnt the entire pyramid to the ground to see justice done.

The rest of the events were rather simple, really. Ame came to form with an alliance and Mebuchednazi listened, the Grand Sorceress is a bit rough around the edges but she’s a good leader for both people because the Anubis actually took the time to do Onis sacred rituals and visit the various tribes while recording their history, it just that Athena crime simply needed to be solved for negotiations to proceed smoothly.

A good third of lizard nobles are in the camp of the Salamander and her sister-champion who is just about the best warrior of all the clans and take a rather… strong stance with the Onis, the majority of nobles tough, take a much more independent approach, some of them adopting some teaching of their ‘’subjugated’’ neighbours, it’s just that the Salamanders duo are very loud, rich and very respected for their struggles against the church, they don’t form a majority yet, but now the lizards are getting quite peeved at being led by such a young Oni chieftain despite the girl actually convincing the rest of the Onis of accepting her rule, with no small amount of help from her mother, of course.

That, however, could be complicated. Athena CAN fight and it'd be very, very good for your claim to have her go to the arena again, her crime is so great people might just clamor for her to actually fight.
>>
>>35231480
What was the fighting style of the Salamander Champion? Two Swords? Greatsword? Sword and Shield?
Did she use acrobatics and incorporate kicks and tail swipes in her fighting style?

Given what Athena knows of these Salamander sisters, and Lizard culture in general, if she were to demand a re-match, would she fight THIS Salamander, or the Salamander Champion?

Athena has a shield right now, but it's just a regular grunt's shield, right?
Could she get a better one to use in her duel? Since she's still missing an arm and she hasn't unlocked the magic abilities granted by her Soul Merge yet, she'll depend on a shield, tail, and kicks.
>>
>>35231480
How the hell does she even stand a chance without her sword arm? The only possible way I could see her winning is miraculously learning how to cast like Siggy at a critical moment. An awfully big risk.
>>
>>35231658
Using her shield not only to defend, but to shield bash her opponent, probably combined with tail sweeps and short kicks aimed at the opponent's knees, shins, and ankles.
A fighting style based on block-counters.

>What was the fighting style of the Salamander Champion? Two Swords? Greatsword? Sword and Shield?

Greatsword.

>Did she use acrobatics and incorporate kicks and tail swipes in her fighting style?

Pretty fast on her fight and a brawler, use her flaming tail often.

>Given what Athena knows of these Salamander sisters, and Lizard culture in general, if she were to demand a re-match, would she fight THIS Salamander, or the Salamander Champion?

They might push for you to fight the Oni champion herself, but if you keep to your guns, you'd have a rematch with the Salamander Hadraniel schooled back then, so another fight with the Lizard Champion.

>Athena has a shield right now, but it's just a regular grunt's shield, right?

A good quality kite shield, nothing bad t osay about it. solid, tried and true.

>she hasn't unlocked the magic abilities granted by her Soul Merge yet.

Yes, not yet... Sooner than yo uthink, though. Strong emotions, strong purpose; keep pushing for them and it'll come.

>>35231658
>How the hell does she even stand a chance without her sword arm?

She's much better than you think, last time she lost by fighting half-asleep without any morale too because she was certain she had to be punished. This time she's itching for a fight despite the handicap and just about reject her old culture.
>>
>>35231755
So, the basic outline of a plan:
1. Demand that Athena be allowed a rematch, that the previous results were tainted, and that we will allow our mind and memories to be searched to prove we speak the truth, that we will bare all that we are before Amarantha's mother's gaze
2. At the same time that we let her see that Athena was poisoned, we also let her see why we came here and why we need her to come with us back to the North (scan the werewolf's memories and to find Deruella).
2a. At the same time, we ask her how we can help solidify her daughter's rule, if us beating down this Salamander will help, and how we should go about things to get the best outcome. She's an experienced leader, so she should know how to play the political game, even if she can't do it herself now, and she can download the instructions into Athena's head via images and impressions.
3. Beat the Salamander bitch in a fair duel this time.

It' about late afternoon.

As for cultural implications, well, the champion might simply not be available or ready for a fight until morning, night duels don't tend to happen often, people are busy at night. It's not common to fight then anyhow.

If the duel is accepted, expect it to happen in the morning so the champion can be truly prepared.
>>
>>35232036
What are we allowed in these duels?
Expendable and disposable weapons, such as alchemical potions? Summoned spirits that provide replacement arm functionality?

Oni's are summoners, so could an oni shaman be found that would summon a spirit for Athena that would act as her right arm for a day?

Just about anything goes aside from treachery, like poisoning your opponement. Sacred Combat means you can fight at your very, very best, if it means getting help in term of equipement, then that goes unless previously stated rules are in effect.

so if someone demand physical combat only, then it must be obeyed but again, that depend on the severity of the duel.

>Oni's are summoners, so could an oni shaman be found that would summon a spirit for Athena that would act as her right arm for a day?

That's a big, big maybe since you'd need to communicate with an ancestor and convince them of your cause.
>>
>>35232424
Would it be a Lizard or Oni ancestor?
Our cause is to protect the Lizards and the Oni, the people of Zipang, to restore our honor, and to right the injustice of a poisoned Sacred Trial by Combat.
What else does Athena fight for, what other reasons does she know of that could get the cooperation of an ancestor spirit?

Saving Zipangu of course, I've never said your cause isn't good enough to convince an ancestor. Just expect everyone to be flabbergasted by the idea of a lizard carrying a sacred ancestor.
>>

That would actually make the duel have even greater stakes, and be even more symbolic.
The Salamander Champion, representing the Old Ways of the Lizards.
Athena, fused with an Oni Ancestor Spirit, representing the Commonwealth, showing that the new whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That by not just working together, but becoming a new whole, the new Zipang is stronger than the past.

That is, Siggy's "first time" with a woman after his first confirmed kill (the preggo Lamia). Mylen filled the role despite her past and for rather selfish reasons, but in the end it ironically led to deeper feelings developing.

Before you write anything, keep in mind the cultural traditions surrounding Sacred Combat.
The last thing we need is for people to realize that we used a loophole to get two fighters against the Salamander's one.

Also, if you make this duel too much about the values of the Commonwealth versus the Lizard's old ways, you'll alienate a third of the Lizards. On top of that, this is supposed to be about justice and restoring Athena's honor, not about proving one side or the other, even though that's the subtext.

Consider that sometimes keeping your mouth shut is better than giving a speech that does opposite than the intended effect.

Yet, to him, it was a godsend. She understands, she cares, she feels what "I" feel and yet accepts me anyway. I don't deserve this, she should condemn me from the rooftops yet here she is accepting me even though tears cloud her impossibly beautiful eyes...

Didn't know why at the time but the sentiment carries on. Hell, if he knew the whole story then he may have damn well achieved a kind of enlightenment. Didn't but hey, her actions kept him from breaking. Counts for a lot...

Wear a mask long enough and you become it. Pretend to feel a certain way and you will eventually come to feel it truly. This is the bane of any long term infiltrator, if the mission takes too long you'll become what you "pretend" to be no matter how hard you try not to.

Make friends, establish connections, do things on given weekends, soon your "cover" becomes your real life. Then the order comes down to backstab your best friend of the past 3 years or more...

3 years ago? Before you "knew" them? No question, boom, done. But now you know their wife, their kids, how they refer to you as if you were family, they so utterly treat you as yet another family member, they TRUST you...

Yeah, a hell of a lot harder to execute now isn't it?

We can only hope. Daiyu developed a kind of sentimentality towards Zipangu during her time as the spider.

I'd like to think Deruella would have developed the same, yet I fear her overarching goals overrided that. Daiyu had a limit to her ambitions, limits I fear her daughter does not have.

Worst case, she is DEAD set on realizing a "utopia" of unending pleasure. Orion is her opposite so really, hope she cuts his head off for some reason with the Shiki knife. Broad probably has plans to deal with us all now that she has it, Orion is the final loose end what with his fucking NUKE and all...

>loathe to see the effort of an anon go to waste
Effort does not equate to quality or being able to achieve intended ends.
If an anon spends 5 hours of effort and still comes up with a terrible speech that doesn't take into account the Oni and Lizard cultures and is rife with anon's own biases and pre-conceptions, I would reject without remorse or regret.

Thinking that effort equals worth is a logical fallacy.

Hard work and effort is no substitute for actual competence.

Yes it will. I don't expect a good chunk of Siggy's ego to remain afterward. I just hope that the other members of our so called "posse" can make him sac his ego faster than we do by a good amount.

In the end, we need him to burn himself out before we do. I want Iron McFuckface to burn out well before Mr. Demigod does the same. We'll likely need Hadraniel and her buddy Radiance double teaming his ass in some form to make that happen. If we can goad Justice into the fight (and we may well be able to, given Lex's goals in this), than we may be able to pull this whole fight out of our asses with zero major casualties.

Big if though, I hardly expect you of all people to just *give* us a happy end...

Considering that Amarantha is the one that needs to tie herself to Athena in the context of the duel, it only makes sense that she be the one to make any kind of speech, not Athena.

Athena is entering the duel to restore her honor as the stated stakes.
Raising the stakes to be about further integration or not wouldn't be up to her.

If Amarantha formally announces that she will assisting Athena in being prepared for the duel, though, that will raise the stakes in a way that doesn't make it look like the North interfering in the South's internal affairs.
>>
>>35238756
I thought she also had a duel scheduled. Faking her death was deceitful and cunning, traits frowned upon by her kind. Thus necessitating a reassertion of dominance and honor as it were to maintain leadership. She isn't the strongest Oni around though. Strong, but not the true Alpha and thus would lose in a 1v1 fight against their greatest warrior (may have changed with Belphegor upgrading her equipment).

Zech, however, presumably would and the plan was for him to do so so that the Anubis couldn't realize her political goals, goals that had Tsu displeased. Kind of a moot point now with her in a coma but that was the state of things before saving the worm and the felwhore making everything go to hell in a handbasket.

We will need a shaman though if we wish to boost Athena to 100 percent combat potential if only temporarily, and I think she is one given how she did summon a spirit during Siggy's confrontation with her in the closed world.

Need that worm south though ASAP, every minute we spend is a minute the target can use to cover her tracks.

A long, long silence reigned inside the senate-like room; I’ve never seen anything quite like this in central or northern Zipangu, the vast majority of nobles sitting in the same room spewing out drivels and agenda would erode the patience of any absolute monarchs but now, thankfully, the guttural scream of the worm forced everyone to take a cold bucket of water and stares in silence, with the Salamander doing her best to look upset without losing (anymore) faces whilst the angry Onis sat back with a little more decorum.

‘’I trust we can have a civil discussion inside the utmost house of law?’’

Amarantha spoke with edge of impatience in her tone as she faced the lizard before turning toward her demonic compatriots and that’s when I decided to step forward before anyone else could raise protests, meanwhile Sylphis helped Tanuya on her feet while Zechariah kept on staring toward the worm that, by now, had its attention on our group, its eyes opening and closing at uneven interval, as if attempting to break eyes contacts before it even began.

I felt ever eyes fall on me as I truly exited the security of my comrades and the pain in my arm intensified momentarily, stress buildup is never healthy for phantom pain but I grinded my teeth in silence until I stopped near the Oni chieftain, the entire room now dead silent save for the reverberation of my footsteps.

Better to get this out there, get the duel on our terms, and bring the previous duel into question.
If that's done, that the previous duel was tainted from the beginning because of poisoning, then the Lizards will have to accept that Ame's intervention was in the right.

I’ve never been one for orations, in fact I never tried public speaking until today and I didn’t feel an ounce of shame once I denounced the previous duel, each and every one of my words came out of pure, simple improvisation but the anger fueling my passion was the only thing I needed to push me onward – until today, I never knew how purpose could truly animate a person, and if Siegfried actions are fueled by something like this… then I think I can pretend to understand my husband, if only a little.

‘’You would dare to-‘’

‘’Yes! I not only dare but offer my very memory for trials! Our Sacred Ancestors were duped, this is my claim – this is what I know’’

I had to whirl around to actually point at the worm, probably a little too dramatic I still felt the urge to slap the ground with my duel and indulged to truly force that Salamander to silence; my sudden movement seem to confuse the pair, with Amarantha staring at me curiously while the inner jaw of the big, big creature kept on opening and closing in worrying smacks.

‘’I wish to use the abilities in her glowering eyes for proof; a telepath can prove a person thoughts without an ounce of doubts for I shan’t resist the mind probe and thusly ask for anyone – be they Onis or Lizard – to step forward and share my own memories of the events.’’

Without waiting for retorts I already started walking toward Amarantha and her mother, the young chieftain seemed to be resisted a smile while the large worm bent itself downward, peering at me curiously.

‘’You expect anyone to listen to the drivel of a proven traitor!? You words alone should erase any and all record of the Pàla family, you damn the very name of Minwee by putting the will of heaven into doubt!’’

She dared to..! Passion turn into rage before I can stop it and I turn toward the Salamander, stomping the ground with my boot and tail simultaneously as I point toward her.

‘’You!’’

I take every ounce of my discipline to avoid screaming but my tone light her tail in an even bigger flame as she meet my eyes with an equal amount of emotions.

‘’Speak ill of my older sister again and I will kill you.’’

--

The next few moments were filled with harsh tension; I turned and offered my memories to Amarantha mother, resulting in a strange experience indeed. The brilliant, shiny, colored eyes of the giant worm would leave a strange buzzing in my head with a few sensation of vertigo as the events of the duel (before, during and after) were scrutinized in great speed, images coming and flowing like a torrential river, reawakening bitter emotions alongside the pain of losing my sword arm; something seemed to have struck the worm as it jittered here and there then turned toward the Onis and, one by one, each of the demons stood up silently to walk into the center of the debate room, all of them brightly colored in red, blue or purple skin and garbed in light ceremonial clothes or nearly full bodied armor (sans weapons). It was a silent, constant trickle that resulted in every single one of the Onis elder standing side by side after silently observing the worm, and I felt the flame of hope rousing in my chest.

‘’What’s this, rebellion!?’’

‘’No, it’s not. The Sacred Duel is the one practice we’ve agreed to hold as sacred between our people…’’

Another Lizard suddenly interrupted the Salamander, a woman of overall smaller stature covered in darkish scales ranging from blue to red with bodice covered in bronze metal alongside necessary padding; it was the light armors of known sorceress, people of great renown ranging from religious leaders to advisors to nobles.

‘’I’m going to see for myself.’’

‘’You’ll allow yourself to fall for that traitorous conspiracy!?’’

The large flame lizard smacked the handrail, trying to put more emphasis in her words.

‘’I know enough magical tricks to be confident in seeing through a mind probe, beside, since when did I answer to you?’’

This proved enough to break the invisible intimidations with the others, smaller nobles once the sorceress came down and examined the memories for herself, a few others went along to make up their own minds and before long, Onis and Lizards stood on the ground, unmoving.

‘’Our Ancestors were duped’’

‘’Aye; the criminal fought without question despite the scheme’’

‘’This is an insult toward their wisdom…’’

And so whispers of angers seemed to reverberate inside the room, finally – the right timing.

There is no take back once you utter your intention to fight; my next phrase was short and concise but I faced the salamander with pride and anger both and again our eyes crossed – provoking simultaneous scowls. There was no physical way to prove the crime, only memories which were shared with more than twenty Onis and lizardwoman, all of them understood the bizarre sensation I felt after the wine alongside the crippling guilt that sapped my motivation, I wasn’t exactly glad with sharing such an intense, personal moment with so much people but I wouldn’t begrudge anyway to convince nobles and, judging by how they stood their ground, it was a worthy sacrifice.

‘’Recalling the result of the Sacred Duel…?’’

She spoke in a strangely low voice, her brilliant eyes scanning my body, obviously focusing on a certain point; I made no attempt to conceal my missing arm and the smug grin that spread on her face felt like one of the biggest insult I’ve suffered until now; everyone else in the room was looking toward her now, piling up the pressure for some kind of resolution, she was obviously in the minority.

‘’…fine, tomorrow morning we will gather and witness the Will of Heaven again. I’ll make certain our Champion is ready for battle, you do so as well, traitor, and make your prayers for your life will not be guaranteed’’

What started as a fetch quest for a big, oversized worm ended up in a serious political incident with the very honor of an entire people customs on the table. To say I didn’t expect this would be a lie, but it’s still an amazing experience to witness how far things can climb and climb, held aloft by a single piece of string with a nervous wreck holding the scissor; again I had to think of Siegfried, is something like this a normal day for my husband-to-be? How the hell could he endure that pressure for so long?

The area dwindled in personnel following the newly established event tomorrow, no doubt the news will be spread all over the city during the night and the country itself might know of the result after the battle, unlike the heavy handed debates something of a friendly atmosphere settled as people disappeared whilst my own group approached, standing near Amarantha and the big, big creature towering beside her, obviously the entity caught the attention of Sylphis and Tanuya but Zech seemed to prefer taking a little distance, although he did gave a thumb up in my direction.
‘’Hmph! That man…’’
Amarantha sidled beside me, the fact that she wasn’t a towering amazon but actually average height for a girl of her age made me doubt her demonic heritage, but she did seem to hold enough decorum within her own people and I’m not going to commit a faux pas here after this success. For a moment tough, I simply observed the girl, she threw Zechariah a strange glance that I could only describe as animosity but… there was something else in there, spirited would be a better adjective.
‘’Oh, it’s kinda hard and soft at the same time.’’
Sylphis seemed to enjoy herself touching something big enough to kill her outright in a single roll.
‘’How’s stuff up north?’’
‘’Busy, but more importantly…’’

Go to sleep, INH.

You're tired.

Harm? No. Love? With all my heart. If only I could have a fluffy daughter to raise correctly into a strong and beautiful woman. For if I could that would mean mommy has fluffy tails.

Daughters are for loving, not dicking. That's what mommy's for. Though there is nothing wrong with combing your daughter's tail.

>>35249970
Please no, that's just creepy man. Gotta have limits to the dick, even Rance has a cut off point.

You are the only one that say so, anon. I merely teased with Oedipus, there is no proof of my intentions.

I'm not saying I want it, man. I just know INH well enough by now to have a pretty good guess on his intentions.

Intimately well, one might say.

INTIMATELY well.

The Rance thing you are right about the mom thing, but a big sister is fine too.

I call bullshit, anon, none believe you, I never pushed for Oedipus. Never, ever. I merely stand by /tg/ wants.

>>35250201

Pretty sure Rance doesn't touch his daugther, we've no idea about his mother.since she's dead by now. I think.
>>
>>35250288
He also rejects lolis.
>>
>>35250288

Deny it to your heart's content, my dear INH. We both know the truth.
>>
>>35250288
Rance wanted to fuck his pseudo mother/older sister figure.

And I still believe he's related to Hornet in some way
>>
>>35252381
Ah yes, Hornet. Wasn't she that decade long cocktease that finally got a scene in Rance Quest?

Nope.

Hornet is an end game character. Only appeared in Kichikuou so far (where her only sex scene is getting captured and raped by Kayblis).

Will appear in X

Best girl of the series.
>>
>>35253013
It take some guts to make a hentai game serie and have one girl need 10 years before a scene. Hats off to TADA
>>
>>35253032
Not really. She appears in Rance III (1991) as an enemy but doesn't end up having sex with Rance.

She appears in the non canon Kichikuou Rance (1996) and not only can you fuck her but she has her own end.

The next canon game she appears in is in 2011 (Rance Quest). So there was a 20 year wait but that's because she doesn't appear

>>
>>35253032
I'm kind of reminded of Batrion every time I see Solaire. I think they would have gotten along quite famously. Another reason that angel must die horribly. He robbed us of an end with a true bro walking the earth if only for moments at a time.
>>
>>35253304
I was kind of inspired by Solaire, yeah, but I wanted to give Tsu a nice dad more than anything.
>>
>>35253318
Good job there. A real man knows when to lay down his life and he did, even broke his oath to ensure a path forward. In the end, all he ever wanted was a chance at a truly happy ending. A foolish hope, a lost cause, yet he acted anyway...

Man deserves a statue in his honor. Pity it won't make his death any less painful for Tsu. No parent wants to die before their progeny for good reason. A parent should never want to be the reason they cry...
