It almost occurs to you to say ‘aggot’, but you realize that you don’t know exactly what that will make Reeber do. Instead you decide to talk him through it, without the talking part. You look Reeber in the eye, and try to communicate your intent without speech. You wouldn’t want Isaac to overhear your plans.

When you’ve come to a satisfactory arrangement with the hellhound, you face forward and charge. Reeber charges at your side.

Isaac, too, picks up his staff and comes at you.

Everybody charges everybody. Suddenly, Reeber splits away from you and comes at Isaac on his flank, tongue flopping out the corner of his ragged maw. You keep to the right, and close in with Reeber in a pincer strike on the Demonbane.

Things start happening very quickly, and yet for you, in a very orderly fashion. Reeber leaps at Isaac. Isaac swings his staff at your ribcage. You dodge backward out of the bo-staff’s arc – the staff continues around to smack Reeber squarely in the jaw. The hellhound lets out a yelp and collides bodily with Isaac. The pair tumble toward you. You’re taken off balance from the staff, and when you move backward to avoid the tangle, you lose your footing and trip.

Isaac hits the ground. Reeber falls on top of him. You hit the ground, but form into a crouch and spring back onto the dogpile. You and Reeber both flatten Isaac, and you stretch your claws out to point close to his neck. If you had wanted to, you could have inflicted horrific injury.

You all lay there for a moment, breathing. “Nicely done,” Isaac says. He’s fairly impressed. And, not to lie, you’re impressed as well.

Much to your surprise, a gentle force of glowing light pushes you off of Isaac and carries you back onto your feet, along with Reeber. Isaac comes up with the power as well, and winds up standing as well. He brushes himself off.

Borislav claps loudly from the sidelines.

Isaac gives the Russian a fierce smile, saying, “Tvoi ochered, druzhok.”

“Chyevo?” Borya says, dismayed.

Isaac looks back at you. “Why don’t you have another go with Borislav. Don’t worry about hurting him. Really. Don’t worry about it,” he says.

“What?” you say, exchanging a confused glance with Reeber.

Boris shrugs and stands up. Taking his can of sprite in one hand, he grits his teeth and crushes it against his forehead. He takes the remainder and puts it in his pocket. He reaches out a hand, and barks out a command. “Suda!” he says.

A staff made of burnished red-brown wood flips out of the nearby brush and zips straight into Borislav’s outstretched hand. He steps down and swaps out places with Isaac. He flashes you an apologetic smile, and says something incomprehensible, but with a clear sympathetic tone. “Prosti, dyevushka.”

“Yeah well,” you say, dropping down into a ready stance, “maybe I should be the one saying that to you.”

Isaac bursts out laughing, though you aren’t quite sure why.
>>
>>32451831

Borislav laughs heartily as well, though as he does so his form flickers. He doesn’t so much as transform into a bear as it is that suddenly, in Borislav’s place, stands a nine foot tall, nine hundred pound grizzly bear. The end of his laugh turns into an animalistic grunt of amusement. (Bearislav: 42/42 HP)

“Go!” says Isaac, kicking back on a rock.

Reeber sulks back a little and takes cover behind you. You suck in a breath, not quite so sure about this sparring match. “Hm,” you say, both concerned and thoughtful. (+7 Stress: 25/100)

You start laughing. “He’s… he’s a bear,” you say. You jump in place and point at him with your entire being. “He’s a fucking bear man! This is wild!”

Borislav falls down onto all fours and charges.

Reeber charges ahead without a word from you, and leaps at Borislav, jaws open. Borislav charges ahead, even as the hellhound collides with him and sinks his teeth into his shoulder, scratching at him with claws and clinging on in attempt to trip him up. But even Reeber can’t stop a charging grizzly bear, and he dangles uselessly off the druid’s side.

Your hands ignite with lapping flame. “Only you can prevent forest fires!” you say, throwing two fistfuls of burning hellfire at Smokey. The bear huffs, and a thick mist boils from his mouth, but a moment too late to stop the fire from splashing over his back – furr burns and shoulders, and the acrid scent of burnt hair fills the air. (-7 PP: 7/14)

You don’t really have time to do anything else, so you turn and run.

People don’t outrun bears.

You feet an unstoppable force on your back, and the next thing you know, you’re plowed into the earth and held in place by a crushing force. (-1 HP: 13/14, +3 Stress: 27/100)

You can’t turn your head enough to see what it is, but you can feel an immeasurable spring of muscle behind it. You just got floored by a bear. You have trouble breathing, having just had the air knocked out of your lungs.

OH FUCK, HELLBORN QUEST

BRB, gonna furiously finish reading through the archives and then partake in this! So much hype!
>>
How many people on the planet got to be pinned down by a bear? And more important question, how many of those people lived to brag about it? “Huh hehhuh,” you say, your laugh deep and forced from the enormous weight crushing you into the earth. Your smiles is maximized. You could not be smiling more or bigger currently. “So cool,” you say in one breath. “I’m… a willing student,” you gasp. “Teach me… your ways....”

The weight disappears, and you roll over, heaving breathlessly with laughter. The best. (-7 Stress: 20/100)

“Sierra!” you hear Isaac yell. You look up to see him running over. He stops short and glares at Borislav, who is leaning on his staff and dusting embers from his shoulder. Borislav shrugs helplessly, as if to say, I turn into a bear, what did you expect?

“I’m fine,” you say happily. “I’ve never been better!” You pop up energetically, Reeber coming over to give you something to prop yourself up on while you catch your breath. “Man, squirrels was one thing, this is like, a whole ‘nother tier right there. This is like, nothing ever… I mean, he’s not Borislav he’s more like, Bearislav, oh man that hurt.”

“Maybe you should sit down for a while,” Isaac says, seeming worried at your dazed condition. He obviously doesn’t understand what it’s like to be stepped on by a bear.

Isaac doesn’t know that you will never sit again. “I’m invulnerable,” you realize. “I’m fucking going to live forever.” You look up at Borislav, whip out a hand, and seize him by the arm. Your claws are still out, but you try not to apply too much pressure. “How is it done?” you ask desperately. “Is it like, spells, or like, do I need to learn Latin or how to play the accordion? Because I’ll do it. I’ll fucking do it, Borya, I swear.”

Borislav gently takes your claws off of his arm and replaces it carefully by your side, as if you were made of delicate glass, or perhaps nitro glycerin. “Spokoina,” he says in a soothing tone.

You feel very weak just then, as if you remembered that you were just stepped on by a bear, but in the normal sense that’s kind of like you could have died, not that your life has changed. You sink back to the ground, and kind of veg out for a minute. Isaac comes back and gives you a bottle of water. A little bit later you remember you have it, and crack off the lid with your claws. You had been trying to open it peacefully, but accidents happen.

You look over to your side, and see Borya sitting there, mulling something over. He notices you looking at him, and perks up a bit. “You want… to know,” he says haltingly. “Yes?” He kind of grimaces a little bit, and his face has a really open look to it, like , because his words suck, he’s trying to send all the meaning through his expression.

If you're going to correct someone's grammar, please be a doll and explain the solution.

The word "than" is used to compare. The word "then" is used to describe a period of time that happens after (I think; it's an adverb so it could modify just about everything, well, not really but yeah).

Borislav stands up and offers you a hand. You check to make sure your claws are hands again before you take him up on the offer. With a burst of strength, he pulls you to your feet. “Poidiom,” he says, pointing off into the tree line.

You shake your head slightly and shrug, as if to say What the hell’s so special over there?

He pounds his chest twice, makes a kind of bear-ish sound accompanied by claw motions, and makes a receiving motion coming from that direction of the forest toward him, as if to say, What I can do is not from within me, but comes from something in that direction.

You raise an eyebrow and smile broadly, as if to say, Why didn’t you just say so?

He shrugs helplessly and chuckles, and the two of you head off.

You hear Rowan’s voice from behind you. “Hey, where are you going?”

“See the heart of the bear or some crap,” you say back.

“Cool,” she says, and a moment later she’s by your side too.

You voyage out of the clearing, and into the wood. As you trek further along, the feeling of vague familiarity returns to you. You can’t seem to shake it off as you follow Borislav’s lead to wherever you’re going. The trees on all sides loom larger than anything you’ve ever seen before.
>>
>>32453307

“This place… feels old,” says Rowan.

“Very old,” Borislav confirms, looking up in quiet contemplation.

You walk for a few more minutes, and you begin to taste an almost imperceptible power in the air. It’s like… you’re getting close to something important. The weird familiarity returns as well, and you can almost visualize arteries of energy pulsing above you between the trees. (+2 Stress: 22/100)

You look up and realize you’ve fallen behind Ro and Borya by a few yards. You slowed down without realizing it.

Borya looks back and holds up, looking curious. Rowan takes a cue from him and also turns around. “What’s wrong?” she asks, noticing something not quite right with you.

“Do you not feel that?” you ask, indicating the imperceptible flow of power and life above you. You trace its path and gesture to your heart for Borislav’s sake.

His eyes narrow slightly, and he nods slowly. “Yes. Like center,” he says, touching his breast bone. “Center of forest.”

“What are you talking about?” Ro asks, confused. “I can’t feel anything.”

“It’s everywhere,” you say, and you can feel it. It’s not just in the air above. It’s in the earth beneath you. And it’s in your midst. You can almost feel the direction of the current. Without conscious decision, you find yourself drifting along with its magnetic pull, walking slowly. “It’s going this way.”

Boris looks from you to the direction you’re headed. “You are right,” he says. “Come, dyevooshka, come!” he moves along at your side, watching your progress and becoming slightly more excited with every step you take in the direction of the invisible force that saturates the environment around you. He rambles off something long winded and almost panicked in Russian, so fast that you can’t even distinguish individual words.

Rowan walks up to your side. “Sierra, what’s going on?”

“I’ve been here before,” you say. You look and see a curious cluster of mushrooms growing against the base of a massive tree. “Here. Right here.”

“What were you doing here? We’re in the middle of nowhere,” says Rowan.
>>
>>32453684

And then you see it. A monstrous fallen redwood tree, covered in moss, gone soft with age and decay. You stop and fumble out your wallet, and pry it open. The wallet falls to the ground once your shakings hands find what they were looking for. You hold up the picture to your eyes.

You lower it, and look at the fallen tree. You move several feet forward and to the right, and come to another stop. You check the photo, and one sidestep, and you’re there. (+10 Stress: 32/100)

You’re in side where the picture was taken now. You lower the photograph and tug idly on the simple iron ring on your right thumb, your mind buzzing in confusion.

“You dropped you wallet,” Rowan says, approaching behind you. “You’re acting really weird. Talk to me.”

You hear Borislav approach behind her, but he remains silent.

Rowan’s words slide off of you without quite sinking in. All you know is that you have to get up on that log.

You don’t keep track of how quickly you go to get there, but you reach the base of the fallen tree’s trunk. Mushrooms and moss grow all over its surface. The trunk is partially decomposed, but it is still a great deal taller than you are. You lack the leverage to scale the side of the trunk without getting covered in mulch and dirt, but you quickly spot another way up.

A smaller tree lies fallen over the first, and it’s a simple matter to use that one as a ramp to get up top. You clamor onto it and focus on putting one foot in front of the other as you walk upwards, putting the narrowness of the climb out of your thoughts. You wobble at the end, but manage to jump off and onto the top of the dead tree. It’s surprisingly soft and springy underfoot.
>>
>>32453941
You tug look back at your photo. It’s faded and has gone soft from years of being countlessly folded and unfolded, and jammed into every conceivable space and container imaginable. You examine the details once more, namely where the people in it are standing. You look up, take in your surroundings, and step a little nearer the edge and… yes.

You have arrived. The suffocating life and power seems almost visible to the eye now, but this holds your attention.

Rowan stands at the base of the trunk for a moment, looking up at you, but quickly decides it better to climb than try to engage you in conversation from the ground. She follows up your tree-ramp and joins you at the top. “Sierra?” she asks, approaching you with tentative steps.

It feels wrong being here. It’s supposed to be bigger. The tree is supposed to be three times as tall as you are. You’re supposed to feel like you’re on top of the world, but right now, you just feel like you’re standing on the top of a bid dead tree.

When you feel Rowan’s presence at your side, you absent mindedly hand her the photograph and stare off into the depths of the forest. You feel her fingers pluck the picture from yours, but you don’t look. Below, Borislav takes up seat on a gnarled old root and watches the sky.
His gaze causes you to look upwards. The sky isn’t right either, you find. It’s supposed to be white. The sky today is blue. A bright, crisp, incorrect blue.

Your vision becomes blurry, but it’s nothing to do with your glasses. You’re wearing contacts today.

“I… didn’t know you had a sister,” says Rowan.

You frown and say nothing.

There’s a moment’s pause. “Which one’s you?”

You hate this question. They always ask. Everybody. But you like Rowan. You can tell Rowan anything, and so you do.

“I’m right here,” you say, hot tears welling up at your eyes with alarming ferocity, “and dad’s he’s… y’know,” you say, your voice thick, “picked me up and stuff, and he’s all like, let’s see a smile on my little princess. And every day I miss him, because he’s not going to say that again, ever.” You draw a shaky breath, your cheeks burning angrily. You continue, almost as an afterthought, “And nobody can tell me and Nev apart in that stupid picture anyway, so can you like… please just be quiet for like, ten seconds or something?”

There’s blessed quiet for a moment, and stillness. You sniff. It’s nearly impossible to breathe through your nose.

You feel Ro reaching toward you out of the corner of your awareness, more than you see it.

Hellborn quest would have liked Shadow's rolls too.

Why?

in character
some of us don't like metagaming

Yeah, it'd be nice if the OP called for the roll afterwards.

>In character

Lamest excuse, in character is subjective.
>>
Being the QM right now must be suffering.
That "we're not alone anymore" musta hit right in the feels, but that damn 97 on a hard roll is kill it to death.
>>
>>32455004
Because some people don't want different options?
>>
>>32455032
You're right, my subjective view of her character has her pulling away. That's why I voted for it.

You're not very good at this, are you?

>>32455045
Oh god I fucked up that sentence. English is my first language, how embarrassing.
>>
>>32455004
I just read the update and vote.

Faggots like you are why I don't like roll's with votes.

>Metagaming
>>
>>32455058
Should we not be working towards options that provide character growth, as well as the potential for stress reduction, rather than going for the option that will have negative consequences?

If in-character is subjective, why use it as a basis for your choice?
>>
>>32455119
Yes, working towards them, not blindly picking the "best" one every time.

What else would I use as a basis for my choice when roleplaying a character?
>>
>>32455135
Working towards those goals requires you to make the choice to do so, if were always pulling away, when do we get the chance to become closer?
>>
>>32455170
What do you mean always? Including this choice, we have never once pulled away from Rowan. Not a single time.
>>
You let her hand fall on your shoulder. You close your eyes and grit your teeth. It’s just a hand, Sierra. It’s just Ro. You just need to calm down. Just breathe. Don’t think about it. Don’t stress. You can do this, just don’t think about the pins and needles in your shoulder, don’t think about how your muscles are cramping up at her touch, don’t think about the shivers running down your spine. Your flesh is writhing. Burning. Screaming. It hurts. (+20 Stress: 52/100)

You shrink beneath her touch and pull away. “Please don’t touch me,” you say, careful to maintain a personal buffer zone and avoid eye contact. “Please.”

“Do you… want your picture?” Ro asks quietly.

Her voice reminds you of her touch, and it makes your skin crawl. “Just leave me alone,” you say. (+3 Stress: 55/100)

Rowan stands still for a brief time, but eventually, you hear her retreating footsteps. Your chest and breathing is tight and constricted. You try to ease some of the tension out of your body for a moment, and it doesn’t work. You sit down on the tree and bury your face in your arms for a while, and focus on drawing your shallow, rasping breaths into something approaching normal breathing.

You’re there for some time.

I could totally see Sierra accepting a hug or some kind of physical contact from Rowan, who she's gotten a lot closer with. This subjective 'but muh trauma' autistic bullshit is fucking annoying as hell

nice email btw
>>
>>32455425
I haven't seen anything to suggest anyone wants to turn Sierra into an edgelord. Might just be you.
>>
>>32455425
Honestly needs to be a result of failure to cope with a situation rather than a choice to autofail to cope.
>>
>>32455457
Had we failed the roll I think it would have been more severe than just pulling away.
>>
>>32455457
Lol, the person you replied to is failing to cope with a situation.
>>
>>32455210
I can feel the tension in here. Good job!

>>32455251
Thanks for the run. See you next time.
>>
>>32455425
She doesn't need to develop it. She has it already. She is trying to fight it.
>>
>>32455453
Shit, back when this quest started we had people wanting to go back to the Cobras and live up the thug life, 420blazeit, work with demons, tell Cassandra to go fuck herself for thinking we're a charity, etc. and I can't help but see an echo of that in these votes.
>>
>>32455537
So you have people who want different things than you? What a surprise.

What the fuck with the email? od what a giant faggot you are...
>>
>>32455490
>>32455501
No, I mean that generally "Don't touch me." and other variations aren't really thing's people choose to do, but is a response to something they can't deal with, a failure to cope with their environment
>>
>>32455547
The email thing wasn't intentional, forgot to clear my email field. And yes, I am opposed to people who want things that are counter to what I want; it's sounds like you're more surprised then I am

>Wanting to get back with her gang is being an edgelord.
>Wanting to hear a demon's perspective on things is being an edgelord.
>Being independent and not wanting to impose on someone is being an edgelord.

Yeah, you don't have many points to stand on.
>>
>>32455573
Not the guy your responding to, but there is somewhat of a difference between those and the choice some people are bitching about. The current one we literally picked auto failure, which to many people doesn't even register as a choice.
>>
>>32455573
>Wanting to get back with a blood-brother gang for a bunch of people who want to use you to push dope, murder other thugs for encroaching on territory, etc.
>Wanting to hear a demon's perspective of the dude who ordered said gang to die, when it'd be more expedient to let the Hallows take care of him
>Declaring your independence by telling someone to fuck off
>>
>>32455652
>>Wanting to get back with a blood-brother gang for a bunch of people who want to use you to push dope, murder other thugs for encroaching on territory, etc.
Don't forget they were also her only family at the time.
>>Wanting to hear a demon's perspective of the dude who ordered said gang to die, when it'd be more expedient to let the Hallows take care of him
I was assuming you meant working with demons in general as your post was rather vague.
>>Declaring your independence by telling someone to fuck off
If anyone voted to tell her to fuck off they were an extreme minority. I remember people voting to want to go off on their own - but none that wanted to downright insult them.
>>
>>32455746
Monster was our family, and kinda the leader.

They both died, the rest were pretty damn terrified of Sierra.
>>
>>32455746
The thing about demons was vague, but I was mostly just recollecting. To clarify, I meant when we tried to get that Stygian demon's insight and help, before that backfired.

As for the family bit, I'll agree that Monster and Sierra were pretty tight, but after Monster's death going back would mean picking up where we left off and probably taking up leadership in the gang, and I don't how that couldn't get edgy after a while

And perhaps I'm remembering things differently, though there was definitely a very vocal minority who wanted to be outright hostile to the Hallows
>>
>>32455871
>being hostile to a group of people led by someone who tried to kill you with a crossbow is edgy
>feeling uncomfortable with a family whose daughter actively reviles you is edgy
>wanting to escape this scary, unfamiliar situation to go back to people who were at least familiar allies is edgy
It's like you literally don't understand what the emotion of fear is.
>>
>>32455631
The fact that you're referring to the choice as auto-failure is proof that you don't understand why we would pick it.
>>
>>32459058
Oh, I know why you guys picked it.

You're self defeating morons. There was no advantage to picking it, the only result we could get was negative, rather than actually trying at something and failing you guys chose the option where we just went straight to failure. All for the "roleplay" option, when that isn't even true, see >>32455549.
>>
>>32459251
We already had proof you didn't know, anon. There was no need to restate so clearly that you just are unable to understand.
>>
>>32459251
>There was no advantage to picking it
Personally I felt it made for the most interesting choice for the narrative. This isn't about "winning", but enjoying the ride.
>>
Just like to pop in and clarify something. I went with the option where Sierra tried to let Rowan support her, but the rolls weren't quite good enough. Hard DCs are generally 10 or under.

So, after failing that attempt, she went with the secondary options, which were to pull away. Hopefully that resolves some of the confusion.
>>
>>32459251
You do not always pick the most adventageous thing in life. When a person is uncomfortable with touching in general, and finds himself/herself in such an unsettling situation it is normal to ask them not to be touched for the moment. It is normal to try and endure it, or try to see it as a good thing to get over their fear of touching people too. There is no right choice here like you seem to think.

Sierra tried to accept the touch but he was just too overwhelmed at the moment, so she rejected it. It was an acceptable reaction on her part. She will probably go explain and apologize to her friend later, who is already aware of Sierra's reaction to human touch. It was a completely acceptable chain of events. If you go back and read it her tought process and feelings can be seen surprisingly clearly.
>>
>>32459693
Thanks! Any chance you could call for rolls after a decision has been made, so people don't metagame and jump on the option with a good roll?
>>
>>32459693

THIS THIS THIS
A thousand times this:
>>32459745
>>
>>32459745
This is generally a good practice. If you have options that require rolls and options that doesn't at the same time, a lot of people will vote according to the result of the dice which beats the whole purpose of having the vote.
>>
>>32459745
I'm not a fan of this as it would slow things down.
>>
>>32459778
It would slow things down by 5 minutes per votes that require rolls. Not very significant.
>>
>>32459778
Asking and getting 3 rolls when an option is picked will not take more than two minutes. It will not slow anything.
>>
>>32459785
That's a significant number of the votes.

We'll have to agree to disagree.
>>
>>32459778
If Languid started calling for rolls after picks, and ran for a thousand more threads, the combined time used on getting rolls after the vote would still be less than the delays caused by his lawn up to this point.
>>
>>32459833
If you insist. One final point though, you said it was a significant number of the votes. Reviewing the votes Languid called for in this thread, only 3 out of 9 included options with dice. That means in the worst case 15 extra minutes spent on rolls in a thread that has already lasted several hours.

What? You seem to fail to understand the concept. All that needs to change is that when it is decided that an option that requires rolls is picked, Languid will ask for a roll and anon will roll. Thiw will take about two minutes.
>>
>>32459880
No, I understand the concept. I just wanted to voice a mild disagreement with it.

I mean, it might not end up slowing things down much in practice, but I still wanted to say so.
>>
>>32459693
What's very hard then?

Crit success?

Some of you guys gotta stop getting upset. Seriously. Especially that grammar nazi. C'mon, man. You're correcting someone's grammar on the internet; don't you see how useless this is?

So, I don't expect this question to get answered, and I'm pretty sure it makes me a scumbag for asking it, but I'm still curious.

How romantically/sexually experienced is Sierra? Has she ever even kissed a boy before? Gone on a date?

We know she's into tall, fit, conventionally-attractive dudes - and who could blame her? - and that she's probably way too fucked up to actually have a healthy relationship right now, but how far has she gone in the past?
