You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.

Last Thread: You are the knight, Talon York, and you are an emperor, but not the emperor… yet. Last thread you claimed Darlesia, fended off a Taouran raid and are now planning to conquer neighbouring Deodain.

You split your army into two, leaving 2500 soldiers at Hiien under Parras and taking 3000 with you into Deodain with your heaviest hitters. You’ve also got another 1500 conscripts with basic gear marching north to join you. If you keep an eye on things, you doubt Taour can catch you out.

Except then they do – arriving outside Dale it’s clear the town is deserted. You stand your army outside of it and Vad gives you a grim look.

“He’s in there,” he says, tails standing straight. “That armoured daywalker who screwed us up last time.”

General Volante. Or just Volante, given he appears to lack an army. He must be confident in his power to come out here to face you himself. Or maybe he just wants a good fight.

“Talon York!” booms his voice. “Come and face me in single combat. If you want to rule Taour, then you must prove yourself to be a man of power.”

Do you take him up on his offer?

Vad's not picking anybody else up.

"He didn't really come out here by himself, did he?" you ask.

"He tore us up last time, so I'm not too surprised," he says.

Gnome nods, looking similarly grim.

Vad explains what he's like, "Big sword. Complete set of black armour. He has a visor but it's been covered with some sort of red resin. Moves fast as hell and tears people and mage-knights up like they're made of paper. He caused most of our casualties on the raids by himself."

>Volante is a monster. Equally skilled in shadow and blood he has somehow fused with his armour. He thrives on direct battle but has no small number of tricks available. He can also rapidly regenerate his armour along with his flesh. I’d suggest luring him into a trap and obliterating him.

I'd suggest faking a honorable duel while your hero units set up a trap for him.
>>
>>31697644
Ah. So he has Blood magic then.

We may not be able to match him unless we get lucky...but this is still dangerous. Have Mal check for any magical trap bullshit real quick, and everyone is on standby just in case.
>>
>>31697492
The smart thing would be to hit him hard... however, isn't he a master for both blood AND shadow? He might be able to escape that.
... I am tempted to do it with the conditional of getting aid if it becomes needed.
I wish we had a secure way of communicating with our entourage.

I also worry this is a trap and there are hidden vampires around waiting to jump us

>Shadow Magic
As long as this motherfucker doesn't summon anything, then agreed. The second he summons allies, our allies get to come too.
>>
>>31697667
that, is actually a solid idea... and what better way to lure him into a trap than by agreeing to his single combat.
Heck, we might ever get really lucky and beat him.

Alright, so we can't deal with this guy by ourselves, not like this. We need to go into single combat with him, but get all of our generals to prepare traps out the wahzoo to spring on him as we distract him. otherwise we're just going to get ground to dust here.
>>

I wonder if shadowmagic can create illusions? It is possible he would create an illusion so our appearance is swapped and our archers shoot us instead of him if/when the time comes.

>1. But with a trap

“I’ll go in and fight him then-“ you start to say before being interrupted.

“Are you insane, Talon? He put his sword through my chest last time and you want to fight him alone?” Gnome snarls at you.

“As I was saying – I’ll go in and fight him while you and you’ll back me up if anything goes wrong,” you say forcefully, quieting Gnome with a look. “Tsucchi told me he’s dangerous. I don’t plan on leaving myself completely open. If you’re going to surprise him, you’re going to need to know what’s around.”

Looking a bit more mollified, Gnome focuses for a bit, as do Vad and Mal. A short while later they come together and discuss what they’ve found. In the meantime, you leave them to their devices and go in to face Volante before he gets impatient. You don’t want him tearing your soldiers to ribbons.

You stride down the main street of the town soundlessly, the enchantments in your plated armour silencing all noise from your bulk. The town truly is deserted but you keep your guard up and weapons at the ready. You step into the main square of the town, where a banner whirls in the wind. Your shield raised and helmet up, you hear nothing but the roar of the wind.

But you feel Volante.

Looknig to your left, you see his armoured figure, tall and malevolent. He stands alone, the sun shining off his clean, black armour. A strange gummy resin covers his helmet where his visor should which you almost mistake for congealed blood due to its colour. He holds out to you his free hand, the other holding his greatsword, and speaks.

“So the great Grandmaster Arquin himself comes to smite me. What an honour,” he booms mockingly before tilting his head. If you could see his face, you’d swear he was grinning. “But of course, you’re not Arquin.”

“No,” you say, your voice carrying down the empty street over the wind. “I am Imperator Talon York.”

“Glorious,” he says. “To think you would come and fight me – you truly are a man who would rule a nation.”

“I will fight you,” you say, “but I can’t say I’ll consider this much of a test of my power if you find yourself relying on summons or illusions.”

A booming laugh echoes in your ears. “Of course! I will never sully a duel with such weakness.”

Then Volante heft his sword with both swords and raises his guard. A cloud shadows the sun momentarily and you catch a glimmer of red light from in front of him. A red rictus grin hangs in the shadow in front of his helmet, where only air should be, and his sword turns pitch-black. Then the cloud passes and the hint of mysticism fades. In front of you stands the foremost warrior of Taour.

How do you face him?

>1. Head-on charge.
>2. Take up a defensive position and wait for his charge.
>3. Try to circle him and take him in a blind spot.

The wind roars for a moment before settling. The rustling of leaves and the banner overhead continues for a moment, as you and Volante stare each other down across the town square. All sound seems to stop for a moment. A beat.

Then you surge with power. With strength. Your plated boot grinds into the ground for a fraction of an instant as you bring all your power to bear in your lower body. Your muscles tense, screaming from the momentary overexertion and you slap an astral frame over them to support them. You cannot, will not, risk failing here because the spirit was willing but the body weak. For you are all spirit.

Cannoning forward, your sword held back in a thrusting motion, you cover the ground between the two of you faster than you’ve done so before. You muster your talent and crash your foremost foot down in front of Volante. His helmet, covered in that red resin, remains as still as his body. Not wasting even a joule of energy, you push all your power into your arm and other leg. You plan to end this fight before it starts if you can.

Your sword, glowing with a golden light that would ensnare even the richest merchant, strikes forth.

You see a glimmer of red.

Your sword is a hair’s breadth away from Volante’s breastplate when a shadow falls over the two of you once again. His helmet flickers red and his sword goes black. The world warps for a moment, then you snap back, careful not lose any energy in your sword. Volante’s black, so black it appears to consume light itself, snaps up where your arm would have been.

You were ready for him, though, and your shield crashes forward, knocking Volante back with the sound of thunder. The vampiric knight stumbles slightly, his guard dropping for a brief moment and you seize on the opportunity. You sword, still glowing brightly with your contained essence, whirls around in your hand.

Two gauntleted hands fly loose, blood flaring from the open wounds. His sword, still carrying momentum from Volante’s giant-like strength, flies off into the distance. The shadow passes and time seems to stand still for a moment. Your foe is reeling, lacking his hands and weapon. Yet you know this is not over.

You don’t so much as feel the malevolent energy as just know it’s there, but that’s enough to dodge it. You bend backwards, spreading your arms wide and feeling the armour creak against your bulk as you push it to its limits. The power lashes over you and you feel a searing heat over your chest for an instant. Then it’s gone and you flip yourself backwards onto your feet, keeping your distance from Volante.

He’s standing there, arms thrust forward despite his lack of hands. You focus, aware that there’s more to him than meets the eye and see it. Whirling energy, with the faintest of outlines against reality, hangs from the bloody stubs that were once his hands. So faint they are invisible in sunlight. A daywalker fights in the day, just as a nightwalker fights in the night.

Then you spot it – his hands regrowing. Not too fast, but fast enough that if you don’t keep the pressure up he’ll simply heal anything you throw at him. Dalrec had healed faster but he wasn’t a nightmarish apparition trapped in a suit of armour. You had worn Dalrec down so that he couldn’t regenerate himself and if Volante is using his power more actively maybe the same trick will work.

You can’t let him regenerate his wounds. If he does, you’ll be back to square one. Time to press your advantage.

You charge him again, moving more deliberately than the reckless leaping attack you used earlier. You don’t know the full range of that strange energy of his but you know your armour can resist it – you just need to not let him get a heavy blow in.

As you close, Volante takes up a martial position, with one arm outstretched towards you and another held close to his chest. If he’s anywhere near as talented as Gnome is, and if those energy arms of his are as lethal as you think they are, his punches will hurt like a bitch.

>Lower target met

Fighting an opponent with nearly visible attacks is hard, but you’re up for it. You quickly step into Volante’s range with your shield raised. As you expected, he immediately reacts and his other arm crashes into your shield as he swaps stance. Without missing a beat, you slip around his arm and towards his back and bring your sword up between the join of his arm and torso.

Volante’s ready for you, though, and in an impressive feat of acrobatics, flips himself over your sword and comes down on your shield with a plated boot. You stumble slightly, the sheer force behind his entire weight throwing you off balance and he regains his footing. He snaps forward, almost too fast to follow and tries to redecorate your armour with your own blood.

But he’s not too fast to follow and you barely managed to catch his attack. Your sword clatters to the ground as his blow jars your wrist for a second, the sheer power of his blow overwhelming your muscle and Iron Body. It doesn’t stumble you, though, and you move through the pain. Your arm flicks his aside and you step right into his guard with a sharp right cross to his helmet. You hear his armour creak from the blow and part of the resin in his helmet cracks. You swiftly exploit the opening and follow through by grappling him and hurling him bodily to the ground.

Flagstones crack from the impact and dust flies up. Your helmet keeps you from being affected by the flecks of dust and you immediately spin, reaching back for your sword. You’ll need it to do lasting damage. You have that strange ‘knowing’ feeling again and quickly move to dodge Volante’s desperate attack.

if we roll poorly then our elites all jump him at once.

well, that one was a string of 1s followed by a string of 20s.
But the first daywalker we fought in quest had really lucky rolls. like mal's 20 to disrupt his darkness spell and the like

>Target met

You don’t waste time trying to turn, instead relying on your sixth sense to guide you. Dropping to the ground favouring your right side, you slap your gauntleted hand onto the flagstones to spin yourself over. Then Volante’s energy sears the top of your shield and you feel it retreat. You can’t waste time celebrating small wins, though, and you roll over to where your sword lay. Snatching it up, you jump to your feet and raise your guard.

Volante is still down, turned on his side with one arm outstretched. Once again his energy batters your shield and you feel its tendrils trying to reach around its rim. Damn good thing you traded in your old kite shield for a larger tower shield, then, as he just lacks the reach. Then the pressure recedes.

The sun falls into shadow once more and you finally see him for what he is. Red mist flows from his arms, flickering slightly as though lightning runs through it. Two bright red eyes, each the size of your fist, hand in front of his face, curved upwards in delight.

Damn, he’s one horrifying, twisted bastard.

As he raises himself to his feet, you decide it’s time to knock the glee out of him.

>1. He’s winded and off-guard. Now is the time to hit him with astral arrows.

I wonder if we could do an astral arrow without the arrow. when you think about it, the arrow merely acts as a focus. And we aren't even aiming with the bow since we can't hit the wideside of a barn without curving our arrows midflight

>Astral Projection I – you may project raw magical energy up to melee distance of minor strength. Your usage of astral power for this means you are likely barely scratching the surface.

if we want to have more options for our fights, we need to learn more magic. Because right now our bread and butter is bigass swords and difficult-as-fuck astral arrows. lots of people don't want to use those hard rolls to get the DC down eventually.

>I'm just trying to think up more options for the fight than offense and defense.
then ask us what to do in the heat of combat rather then after a "break" so to speak.

That is, when he kicked us and we blocked and then we smashed him into ground? cool as all fuck, would have been a good time to ask whether we want to curb smash him, gut punch, toss away, etc.
>>
>>31700033
I want to try to barrier break his armor. If I am not off on my guess it should shatter his armor to pieces, and didn't he bind himself to his armor?
>>
>>31700238
let's not use that quite yet. we want to whittle him down while he's still handless. the way he is now he still has quite a bit of magic to use in him. he could get tricky and block our barrier break.
>>
>>31700210
Oh! I wanted to ask if our new armor had any fancy weapons in it beyond strength enhancements, but I suppose you'd tell us if so

Either way I don't mind, I like the furiously melee between these two. Shit is so damn manly.
>>
>>31700205
He is injured and he is regenerating. he has ONE arm. if we let him regenerate it back he will probably also regrow his sword too the way his armor regenerates. This would make it significantly harder to push our advantage

Now, what we COULD do is a feint, appear to leave an opponent, when he goes for it. TRAP
>>
>>31700214
Hmm quick time events eh? That'd be kinda cool.
>>
>>31700257
>beyond strength enhancements
our armor has NO strength enhancements, we must provide it ourselves. Our armor is enchanted with
1. being lighter
2. being more durable
3. magic resistance (for itself, not for us).
This means we can use magic to make our flesh more durable and resistant to magic so that two layers have to be passed to injure us, such an act will cause no interference.
The armor could have been enchanted to make us more resistant to magic, but doing so would have interfered with our own (as well as strength, speed, etc. all would interfere). Even though magic resistance on us rather then armor would be more useful (stop things like mind controling music for example), it was designed for a knight. one who buffs himself

You don’t want to give Volante the time to rise to his feet. You square yourself off in his direction and lock your elbow and shield in his direction. Power rises within you, surging wildly through your body. Your shield glows and your muscles harden. You boot grinds into the flagstones and dirt beneath you, tense like a spring as you ready your charge.

Then you uncoil yourself and barrel towards Volante. Streaks of gold seem to flare off the edges of your shield, blurring your peripheral vision. Then you feel the almighty crash of the impact.

>Lower target met

A loud clang resounds through your ears as the metal plating of your shield collides with Volante’s armour. The sudden resistance dulls most of your momentum, but you flex your arm and snap it out hard and fast. As your vision opens up, you see the vampire stumble backwards, the strange red face in front of his own having flickered out of existence and his red mist shifting randomly. With most of your power from the charge gone you instead resort to just hacking into him.

Your sword crashes down on Volante’s gauntlets time and time again, the red mist protecting them from each blow. Still, he’s on the defensive and you take the opportunity to slip into his guard and trip him. As he goes down, you reverse your sword. A glimmer of golden light runs downs it edge and into its tip as you slam the sword home into his chest before wrenching it out through his sword.

Volante screams, a wicked and deep sound from your nightmares, and you quickly raise your guard again as he hammers at you with his mist. Then he suddenly crashes into you, knocking you to the ground. The vampire knight kneels over you, the red mist forming into solid blocks, and try to swiftly raise your defense.

I can't believe you bastards passed every roll.

>Target met

You’ll be pancaked if you let Volante start hammering you with that mist. In his desperation though, the vampire left himself wide open. You summon your strength and bring your arm up. Volante’s ‘fists’ crash down towards you. It’s a race to see who is faster – who can crack the other’s head open first.

The pommel of your side collides with the side of Volante’s helmet and the red misty blocks suddenly dissipate. Volante lets out a scream, more human than that otherworldly shriek earlier, as his head snaps to the side from the impact. The resin covering his visor cracks once more and part of it crumbles away. The feel of Volante, of the vampiric general fused with his armour, that you have felt since you entered this town – it fades. As though all that is left is a shadow.

And you’re going to beat that shadow into the damned ground.

Your arm twists and snaps backwards, your muscle tensing with the torque you force on them. Once again you slam your pommel into Volante’s helmet. His head snaps in the other direction, his armour emitting a nasty crack, and Volante slumps to the side. The sound of his heavy armour falling on the flagstones echoes through the empty town.

The wind blows. The sun moves out from behind the clouds. Volante’s armour, now dirty and dusty, doesn’t gleam in the sunlight now. You pull yourself up, pushing the vampire off you and rising to give a coup de grace.

Then Volante moves.

You raise your guard as he rolls himself over. His helmet falls lopsided and he tries to right it. Too late, the vampire realises he lost his balance, and falls to the ground. His helmet rolls off. Beneath it is a scarred, burnt and mutilated face. Patches of dark hair sit on his bloody scalp. His eyes are blood-red, but so puffy he looks more weak than frightening. He tries once more to rise to his feet. Scrabbling uselessly against the flagstones, he slips and cracks his head against them. You see him visibly grit his teeth, fighting the pain, as he glares up at you.

“You,” he utters, a whisper of his previously booming voice. “You rule Darlesia now?”

“And I will rule Taour, too,” you say calmly, falling into a post-battle haze.

Volante nods. Or tries to.

Part of you wonders if you should kill him now but the fact you can’t sense his power tells you that there’s nothing to fear here. Nothing left worth fearing, at least.

“Then you are the last of Arquin’s line,” he says, before breaking into a fit of coughs.

“I am no Darlesian,” you respond, confused as to what is going on.

“Neither was Arquin. You are he in spirit. You will rule Darlesia. That is what matters,” he says, holding himself on his side so he can face you with as determined a face he can muster through the pain. “Know that no other can claim the throne more rightfully – for the Darlesian royal line was broken shortly after being anointed. A sham.”

“Why do you know this? Why tell me after I defeated you?” you ask.

“Because I am Volante Terces, grandson of Arquin Terces and the last true crown prince of Darlesia.

“You will kill me now and in doing so end the royal line. So you will be like my father, when he slew King Joseph before him and handed the throne to his son. You are a man of power. Like what I became and lost the throne over.

“Do try not to get yourself killed.”

He grins and then breaks into a fit of spluttering.

Time to end this, you think. Underneath the gleaming sun lies a broken vampire, once the greatest general of Taour and supposedly the last of the true Darlesian royal line.

He was Taour's mightest general, he is responsible for great suffering (like the blood farms)
He has single handed killed many of our troops a mere few weeks ago and nearly killed gnome.
He just stated that his beliefs require that we kill him now. Letting him live might leave him broken, or it might cause him to him to come back after us at a rage for a rematch (more likely).
And if we let him live and leave, he will commit more crimes. I feel great pity for him. But no matter what caused him to become this way, we must sometimes perform an act of Justice rather then mercy

You step forward and your blade blurs. Your cold steel separates Volante’s head from his shoulders and bites through the stone beneath him as you effortlessly twirl your sword around and back into your hand. You pause for a moment, focusing and trying to sense anything left of the vampire.

You find nothing more than a fading sense of dark power, the lingering aftermath of such a battle.

You take a seat on one of the stone benches further in the square and rest for a bit. You doubt that will bother attacking you again, having lost their greatest general.

You know that Gnome and your comrades will come to find you. They may even have been watching from somewhere, unlike your army which are hidden from your sight by the town buildings. But they can wait.

You just want a moment to rest and reflect.

so Aspie, let's hear it. What all did this guy have? We did so well because we took the 'harder' decisions (not letting him rest) but because of that his greatest advantage (regen) was not effective, no?
You seem almost disappointed at it all I don't blame you, it's hard to see a boss fight get womped because of luck. Was there anything you're sad didn't get to get shown? Anything you wish had gone differently, or had a thought on?

>Aww man. Well understandable, you've been running a lot.
Yeah and I've got to run again shortly. I need a bit of time to organise myself. All the number stuff earlier today and yesterday has left me a bit jumbled.

>Volante
Basically, he could only take several hits. 5 normal successes with crits counting for 2 and higher targets for 1.5. Dodge rolls don't count. He would regenerate .5 successes of damage each time you let the pressure off him or failed a roll. The more damage you do to him, the weaker he gets - he lost two points right off the bat when you chopped off his hands and one more when near the end.

As for things I never got to show - that sword of his. It would have just gone through everything in its path like a hot knife through butter. As well as the fact it would have had a range greater than the actual blade.

>We did so well because we took the 'harder' decisions (not letting him rest) but because of that his greatest advantage (regen) was not effective, no?
I think it was that we took the easier (read: better) options.

>Also, how fucked is Taour? I am thinking category 9.
speaking of taour.
I can see two options now.
Option 1 is that we rush their capital with all our hero units as well as our full force from the northern front. We slightly outnumber them and the story of how we beat this guy in single combat could cause some of them to defect. if we are lucky some combat mages.

Option 2 is that we have paras menace the capital a bit but NOT invade or engage. That should cause them to recall the 4000 troops from crece, which would allow our troops from darlesia to come in and join us for a 10,000 vs 8,000 battle with us fielding a whole bunch of hero units and them fielding just the 1 remaining warrior daywalker.

Option 3 is that we take the feeder province and wait a bit.

I am thinking 1.
>>

cool man. Get some sleep, food, and notes, whatever you need then I reckon. This is the best marathon ever. I predict either taking all but the Capital of Taour (and the wall place), or just hitting Taour right off next time. But we shall see.

There were some anons gushing, but for real man, you got some great sense of cinematic. Loved it, great thread and all. Be sure to take a moment and appreciate the awesome yourself, too.

>Volante's regen
Damn. That is tough. So, if we had gotten hit too much, we would've gone on the defensive, and then basically be unable to defeat em.
Thankfully, fighting Regen is mostly about being brutal. I'm surprised these two weren't tearing the town apart with their fight, though.

We should put up a memorial or some shit for this fight.

>Sword
Hot damn. So it really was a critical success. That's so damn lucky...I really don't understand the dice sometimes.
We should totally inspect that shit next thread. If it's not full of hate magic n' all.
>>
>>31701371
I'd honestly pincer here. If they abandon crece then we can charge though. If they don't their stuck there. Biggest problem is we have no idea how blackwaters powers work.
>>
>>31701364
I did as well. It seemed to make sense since in general our battles get weaker/harder depending on how well/poorly we are doing.

>>31701371
Speaking of turtling for a bit.

One of the daywalkers can enthrall with her voice. This makes her extremely dangerous to our army. I would love to get magitech gear that nullifies all sounds and yet allows communications for wearers (a must to prevent total unit cohesion loss)
unfortunately that would decrease unit performance (can't hear enemies, explosions, etc), not guarenteed to even work, and we will never get enough of them in time if the AA rate of production is anything to go by.

So I think for her what we want to do is detect her enthralling our soldiers and then sniper her with an astral arrow. the soldiers she enthralled would hopefully have not been given an order by her yet. if they have we will aim to capture them alive for the cure.

Oh, also, another reason to invade fast is to stop them from sabotaging the HMK factory.
>>
>>31701371
1 is probably my favorite right now. Our hero units out number them (not sure in sheer power or not) But I am also really partial to taking the feeder Providences so they don't have anywhere to retreat to, is all.
>>
>>31701323
Hey. I"m wondering if you're still there how long was it till this from when Talon and mercine met in persona a second time? Will we make our projected time of 2 months to her?
>>
>>31701426
we didn't know how this guy works either. ultimately we just got to hit him with enough power and he dies. If he is a true true immortal, hit him with enough power that his regeneration fails, chop him into pieces, and encase in steel (seperate steel containers).
But honestly I think he would die once his power has been exhausted like any other being. Noone is immortal, not even the gods, angels and demons and fae.
>>
>>31701454
I keep getting the feeling though whatever his immortality is it's something pretty rough/tricky. Like die then regen at a predetermined spot at full power tricky.

It's been a little under a month since you told Mercenie it would take two months, if I'm getting my timeframes right (you told her that before heading to Darlesia IIRC).

>>31701408
>Thankfully, fighting Regen is mostly about being brutal. I'm surprised these two weren't tearing the town apart with their fight, though.

I probably would have added some of that in retrospect. Like, when you shield-charged him you took him through a market stall. When he knocked you back and down, you went through the wall of a building etc.

And yeah, Volante was intended as a team-fight. You guys just did really well.
>>
>>31701440
Each province is 2500 square miles. if you took the entire USA and divided it into 2500 provinces you get 1480 provinces total (29.6 provinces per state assuming all states were equal size).

splitting our army into those provinces will not be able to catch any daywalkers. especially when it takes powerful mages to even detect them. We would be better off forming a ring around their capital with our troops. much tighter net
>>
>>31701436
We know that shes a coward tho, shes not going to fight us in the open if she can help it. She will prob try and set up a meeting as a trap.
>>
>>31701485

Heh, woo! I'm super proud of this victory man.

I imagine if we hit him with all our allies, tho, he would have summoned more god knights.

Oh also

Nah it's cool, it's just how it was playing in my head is all.
>>
>>31701408

don't we have the remains of his armor? we could probably give it a proper burial, even put down his full name.
>>

>I'd honestly pincer here. If they abandon crece then we can charge though
if they don't avandon crece, then 5000 of our troops, 3000 of them untrained conscripts, bash against 4000 of their elite troops inside very very strong fortresses.
Even if we win it would be phyrric victory. Oh, and it leaves darlesia open to RSK aggression.
However, IF they actually abandon those fortresses, might as well... heck, I think we could get turncoats at this point in time.
People seeing the writing on the wall
>>
>>31701489
I was thinking when we actually invade the town and our forces are sweeping through, she would have to use it or die.
I am thinking she either abandons taour and runs for the hills. Or she turtles and prays.

Well, the provinces actually vary a bit now as I wanted less provinces per region than I would have needed to make my original calcs. Some are larger than others. E.g. The Darlesian and Terminan ones are 2700sqm but the Shropham, Worremburg and Gespad ones are 4000 while the Ahm ones are 3700.

>>31701501
>I imagine if we hit him with all our allies, tho, he would have summoned more god knights
That was Darian's trick. Shadow powers are radically different for each vampire. Volante was using his shadow power to bind himself to his armour and create those weird energy weapons. Darian's apprentice had projectiles and partial invisibility.
>>
>>31701408
>Thankfully, fighting Regen is mostly about being brutal.
We kinda figured actually. aside from the meta of seeing the rolls go do. we got in game description of "he is missing an arm and and a sword and is slowly regenerating it".
Why would you do anything BUT be aggressive against an enemy that is missing an arm now but is going to regenerate it soon?
And based on how the shadow summons of Darius regenerated their swords, I was guessing that this guy would regnerate his as well
>>
>>31701566
>Volante had the energy weapons
Heh. Man, I am glad the fight went so well, but at the same time, I wish he wasn't on the wrong side so we could spar with him more to see all those wicked powers.

But I also think of what evil Talon would've been like, so that's my problem.

One quick thing, you can humor it if you want to: If we actually attempted to become a Daywalker, what would you have done?
>>
>>31701574
Indeed. Regen is rough, but thankfully we didn't miss a single shot, and hammered him into the ground. We got really lucky, though in the end. He didn't even use his shadow magic on us, AND we cut his sword away from him immediately.

Man I am so glad the dice don't hate us for boss fights.
>>
>>31701485
I kinda wish we tried barrier break on his armor at one point.

>I probably would have added some of that in retrospect. Like, when you shield-charged him you took him through a market stall. When he knocked you back and down, you went through the wall of a building etc.
on the one hand, sounds cool as hell.
Although I felt there was plenty of descriptions. I have been gushing over it for a while but you were including so much detail about stances, about appearance of each fighter, what they were doing... that smashing into the cobbles.
Ultimately it is possible to write so much descriptive prose as to dilute the experience. (that isn't to say that those additions you were suggesting here are bad, but that you shouldn't beat yourself up about being somewhat concise)
>>

You mean, if you actually do attempt to become a daywalker. Offer is still there, even after you conquer Taour. So yes, the possibility was always on the table. As was becoming super evil. I try to make this a relatively open quest.
>>
>>31701485
So, did you expect us to interrogate him? Spare him? (I felt such massive pangs of guilt... just goes to show. tens of thousands of people being harvested, butchered, and sacrificed for blood magic is a statistic. One man dying is a tragedy)

>Volante was intended as a team-fight. You guys just did really well.
You know, since our troops didn't all SEE us do it might be still possible to hide that we did.
Such fame is both good and bad, its good because we are more likely to get turncoats from enemy armies and surrenders from minor factions.
It is bad because we won't be underestimated by powerful opponents. Imagine if all the powerful daywalkers had converged on us early on for an assassination? Getting a reputation for being total badass could do that.
Especially combined with doing so well in this battle
>>
>>31701529
IF they don't abandon it and call the bluff then we go into raiding mode. That and I would think they would call them back just due to Taour itself in danger.
>>
>>31701681
I am pretty sure we will not do it even though the option is always on the table

and what type of powers talon would develop...

God damn it, I can't think about this.

>>31701688

>>
>>31701709
>IF they don't abandon it and call the bluff then we go into raiding mode
I feel this is going to unnecessarily prolong the war, unnecessarily slow down our growth and expansion, and unnecessarily cause death and destruction.

We should really strike while the iron is hot, we got 5500 troops to their 4000. And we got... Lynn, Mal, Sal, Gnome, Talon, Vad, Undine = 7. maybe 8 if felix counts too (not sure quite how strong he is) hero units to their 1.5 (blackwater is 1, that singing one is the 0.5, she doesn't fight but her power can be dangerous. The beurocrat should be a pushover).
And we got 2FR points, we can make this a decisive victory within the next two days and then we build up, tech up, and solidify control.
If we wait the noncombatant daywalkers could get spooked and run. And taour might destroy their HMK armor factory to deny it to us.

Its not like they have instant notification of the death of Volante
>>
>>31701728
Having brought this up I want to bring up something.

Has anyone besides me noticed that Talons Talents including breaking barriers and Iron body? Notice that Iron body is speciously like a God knight, Revenant skill.

The interesting part? I know Saareg starting talents and it's

>Iron Body I – by drawing on the life domain, you make yourself immune to pain and gain enhanced regeneration. Even in situations where you should collapse or suffer from grievous wounds, you do not fall or suffer.

>Sunder I – by drawing on the death domain, you are able to momentarily break reality. Your blow shatters powerful magicks or penetrates objects that would otherwise be impervious.

We also can guess pretty much he is archangel made.
>>
>>31701739
>To be fair anon, any foe that is fighting us that underestimates us is not a very smart, or likely talented, foe, no?
Not necessarily. a whole bunch of people who are very powerful are underestimating us because we are trying to keep our powers a secret. By keeping our strength a secret, we get underestimated.
>>
>>31701777
Yeah I mainly just want to keep crece from fusing into a 10K horde lead by black water. Because then Black water turns out to be badass and two three day walkers start working together and all hell breaks lose. while our 5000 goes against a 10000 horde.
>>
>>31701779
Talon is an experiment to prove the viability of angel 'breeding'?
>>
>>31701798
Yeah. I think the archmage knows. But really if most people realized he has astral they would probably want to kill him. Right now they just think we have sorcery nor do they realize we have a foxy alliance.
>>
>>31701779
Talon does have a heavy hitter vibe, but I don't think it's necessarily related to the Revenant.
I mean, his skill set has always been based around wrecking stuff up close himself.

Whats more interesting? His other skill is Empower Self I. Almost a exact build of Talons basic skills.

I expected you to kill him. Hell, my narrative sense nearly had Talon just kill him without hesitation before I remembered I was writing a quest.
>>
>>31701799
oh wow, i didn't even consider the possibility. The daywalkers and blackwater could abandon their capital and go south, through crece, we won't be able to chase them down as they smash into our volnerable flank and aim to reach and sack vitria or maybe darlesia as well before we do. recruiting via thralling all the way through

Then again, they might consider the above suicide and try their best to fortify in taour.
Also, I bet each of them has sired someone this month as an act of desperation, just to throw more at us. We should expect 3 fledgeling daywalkers (since its been 50 years since the last time one of them sired a daywalker and they can sire one a year) and a bunch more nightwalkers (can sire one a month, mostly limited by blood supply)
>>
>>31701849
Yeah but it seems odd we have a barrier break+Iron body+Reinforcement all done by astral. Makes me wonder about why he seems to have astral and any links he might have had to what ever Saareg might have been. After all we know he wasn't given astral after he was turned.
>>
>>31701779
Oho, that is interesting

>>31701853
Good point too

although might not want to give it too much credence. I think a large part of it is convergent evolution. Completely different ancestry but the same results. I expect every knight, regardless of whether a transmuter, enchanter, monk, astral-adept, god knight, fox, angel, demon, fae, or revenent has a "sunder" ability of some sort. Even though every single being I listed casts their magic in a completely different manner.
>>
>>31701903
>has a "sunder" ability of some sort.
erm, a sunder, an empower, and a regen too probably
in fact, being able to empower self and sunder with magic are the two defining trait of a Knight. With other traits like iron body, haste, energy blades, etc being more rare.
>>
>>31701920
Yeah. I don't think it's amazing or anything but it is interesting given the astral nature of both compared to our astral nature.

I honestly wouldn't have complained either. Narrative wise it felt more proper to have killed him automatically in a smoother manner. Those questions we did ask felt like we are ruining the mood a bit.

>transmuter, enchanter, monk, astral-adept, god knight, fox, angel, demon, fae, or revenent

I am excited for that day. Can't wait for our first 'big dragon' encounter, instead of human form ones. Not that I dislike Lynn or anything.

>I'm surprised there hasn't been more questions over the Darlesia thing, given I'm note sure it's very clear.
It seemed clear enough. His grandfather was the headmaster of the knights of Besette, he founded darlesia. Vol was vampirized before having human children and is the last of the royal family. the current royals are fakes. Probably possibly treachery was involved.
But it was many generations ago, the last royal we knew of was the queen who was decent enough before she died. And AFAIK there is no direct survivor.
>>
>>31702031
Falwick is a magister general of the RSK. Tylarne and Lairos are the big feldragons.

>>31702031
>>31702042
Well, it's main usefulness is that it's ammunition you can use to thwart any attempts to claim the throne. You now know where the look in the history books to find discrepancies - if the royal line wasn't the true royal line then all titles granted by them are effectively void. Or at least you could argue as such.

>>
>>31702134

>>
>>31702139
>Actually, I wasn't aware we were competing with people who claimed Darlessia's throne.
Hypothetically, there are some distant relatives of the queen (who had no heirs) being sheparded by mage survivors from darlesia...
hypothetically
>Are there people there trying to enforce royal lines, and such?
The RSK. While the magi guild is trying to destroy that concept. Talon is the only sane man in the asylum, It is a lot like erfworld in this regard.

Eventually talon is going to be pushed by the magi league and RSK to publicly announce whether is declaring himself as the founder of a new royal bloodline (+lots relationship with RSK, war with magi league) or not (+lots relationship with magi league, war with RSK)

The two are at war about the very concept of divine right to rule. The Royal Seraphi Kingdom is called as such because it claims that the Seraphs (top ranked angels) have given it a divine mandate to do so.
>>
>>31702166
I agree about elementals. unless we could thrall them...
Although I am not sure about turning daywalker. In some ways it is a boost in power, in other ways it is a bane. As they are limited to blood and shadow magic. How that would interact with our astral power is unknown (would it still limit it to just blood and shadow but just be obscenely powerful?)
>>
>>31702166
Honestly we really wouldn't even have to be evil to go that route. Not like it would be the first time lust for power caused someone to do something like that. Though as he is now it's very unlikely due to pride and other factors lack of knowledge of the effects for one and the mental effects. That and life domain+daywalker sounds amazing.
>>
>>31702186
I'm just gonna say, after absorb Orange territory, we are most likely going against the RSK. The Magi League have way more power, and way more of what we need. They will be one of our greatest conquests, too I believe.

Also
>RSK wants to enforce bloodlines
Ooooh, right! I forgot! This means we can say "Oh, you are this noble, are you? Well actually it was this vampire guy I killed, so now no one is the leader. Have fun explaining that to your citizens!"
>>
>>31702166
I think death domain would be about being able to suck the very lifeforce out of people NOT through their blood, just as a shadow at range. Rather than super enthrallment.
>>
>>31702204
>Although I am not sure about turning daywalker

Yeah, Like if Talon was still aging I could see it. Offering immortality in a way to be a eternal emperor would hit so many of his buttons it's not even funny. But as he is now he seems he wouldn't care about it at all. Just because he already has god powers.
>>
>>31702204
>Thrall powerful elementals
I...don't know. I'd be surprised if we could do it, honestly. If so...well that's kinda fucked up.
And would make for a very tragic Talon eventually when the only people who care for him are thralls, and he resents them for his own deeds.

>Bad but Dramatic end

>>31702215

>>
>>31702232
Death domain is the destruction of life forever pretty much. Not sure what power is but I get a feeling it's kind of like life. Then Fire seems to be Uplifting others.
>>
>>31702222
While specific bloodlines matter (QM said we would get RSK boost if we restored darlasian royal family, even as our vassals), it is the CONCEPT that matters to them

They don't actually care about Talon having peasant origins, they care if he keeps those or not and pays lip service to their ideology.

Talon is perfectly fine for them as a ruler as long as he explicitly states "I am establishing a new bloodline, the York Royal Bloodline". While the Magi league want him to say "Bloodlines are bullshit, I rule because of [insert ANY reason you want that isn't bloodline]"
>>
>>31702232
That sounds pretty intense too, actually. Super Thralls would be pretty cool (Like making all our thralls get embued with part of our energy, boosting all our allies), but that would be terrifying.

>Sun rises

>They all begin to convulse and fall over.

Agreed, part of why playing mustache twirling evil isn't fun.
Although that daywalker lady... she seems to have done better. She has 40 extremely loyal non thralls who practically worship her.
Then again, only people who care about you were raised from infancy to be in your cult is still kind of sad too
>>
>>31702266
Yeah, all I am saying is we should only make that decision once we expand as much as we are able to within our limited space.

Then we should go picking sides, ya know.

One of the reasons I advocate siding with the Magi League is due to their raw power...and well...the whole their Arch-Magister being able to snipe us in our capital from her's and such.

The elf being able to easily get past all our security and senses certainly doesn't help.
>>
>>31702254
Yeah I"m just saying it's always possible to go daywalker without being evil. Being on deaths door and offered the chance for one. Maybe a desire to use what powers he has seen for his own use at empire building.

It's just extremely unlikely to happen because of the people he is around and the personality and a bunch of other factors. Astral for one is far more useful then anything we have seen, We are already not aging so no real temptation there. Let alone the political reasons.
>>
>>31702268

>>
>>31702280
Yeah. Though honestly I think people get stuck too hard on the villain part. Not like he couldn't be mostly a good guy. Sanat seemed to do pretty well without thralls.

I could actually see a theoretical event of a daywalker Talon literally refusing to use Thralls. Just because that concept of forcing others would hurt his pride. But this is just me taking random ideas.
>>
>>31702296
Yea. there are a lot of reasons actually

>RSK
>King commited genocide
big mark against him
>Falling apart due to rebellion
>Will probably split up if we hit it hard and take out its top general.
easier to take. look at world map, Guelburg and Horijssel are now its own rebelling kingdom under the authority of RSK's prior archmage.
This means we will have a much smaller swath to conquer in their territories.
>Low on mages
Their war on the magi league made them crack down on them, driving many away
>Fight via huge armies of under trained and under equipped troops
cannon fodder. More likely to break before our advanced tech and hero units
>Top general wants to conquer us now, sabotaged us, is pestering the king for permission to conquer us
Don't know when they will attack us, but sooner than magi league unless we make something drastic
>Talon has contacts there, many of which recognize the sinking ship and want out. Like Nair's family
Could use more nobles actually friendly to us.

>Magi
>Alyce is supposedly a decent person. AFAIK no atrocities
>Alyce and Mercenie helped raise undine
Good points in their favor
>Alyce not actual dictator. Magi League is mostly lead by power hungry evil mages
>Many of which are on the cusp of open rebellion against the league and forming their own kingdoms
>Mercenie "reassured" us that there is very small chance of it tearing itself up into infighting within a month...
>Magi league will probably split up when RSK collapses, but remain united for now while they need the unity to survive the RSK.
>Lots of powerful magi would be able to nullify our hero units, requiring us to burn through soldiers to overcome them.

So, for all the above reasons I say RSK goes first

Actually I like that. We could "redeem" vampires. Prove they can be non evil to the populace.
Go around healing the sick with life magic.
Drink only blood you purchase without harm (or eventually, willingly donated to you by faithful followers and groupies)
>>
>>31702440
Yeah. Though speaking of life magic I wonder if we will ever get a chance to focus a bit on fire as well. Or just how thoroughly we are on the Life road.
>>
>>31702412
Very comprehensive list, actually. Keep that around for when we eventually start discussing that.
>>

I feel bad that we can't see the 'domain tree' or anything like Shadow Quest has, but I suppose making it more of a 'decision' based thing works just fine too.
>>
>>31702469
>>31702483
I am wondering if we must actually lock into a domain or not. And whether or not there are hidden domains other than life/death/fire (I think those 3 were there because we unlocked it during a battle which fit those three)

>King commited genocide
Not good but happens a lot in history.

>Falling apart due to rebellion
>Will probably split up if we hit it hard and take out its top general.

Agreed though it has so much more land then us the odds of doing that is rare.

>Low on mages
Useful.

>Fight via huge armies of under trained and under equipped troops
I think you're underestimating them here. Talon was offered a job as one of the 5 generals and he would be considered one of the weaker ones and their army is in a constant war. So I would imagine a good chunk of them are vets. With a lot of greens here and there.

>Top general wants to conquer us now, sabotaged us, is pestering the king for permission to conquer us

And the king has proven to be pretty bro and stopped him each time. We have ties to him already.

>Talon has contacts there, many of which recognize the sinking ship and want out. Like Nair's family

Great and useful.

>Magi
>Alyce is supposedly a decent person. AFAIK no atrocities

She has changed a bit from the last time Undine and them saw her.

>Alyce and Mercenie helped raise undine

Kind of? I mean I kind of like Mercenie just because she is such a bitch. But it kind of eels to me like Undine is mainly thinking about her past when she says things about this.

>Alyce not actual dictator. Magi League is mostly lead by power hungry evil mages

Easier to manipulate. That and cutthroat is pretty normal in politics.

>Mercenie "reassured" us that there is very small chance of it tearing itself up into infighting within a month...

Of course she did. Though the archmage may just be able to pull it off.

>Lots of powerful magi would be able to nullify our hero units, requiring us to burn through soldiers to overcome them.

Depends on the mages we have and the levels of bonuses.

In general though I agree the RSK will go. But we do already have some ties back to them and should make use of it well.

If we make a domain up and it works Aspirational said he would use it. He also said the Domains are not a one to one base on the lords and it is possible to mold two or even all the paths together. But reality warping has it's own effects and more then one has others.
>>
>>31702615
Derp. Gaining the reality warping from domains has it's own effects and is more complex then just the more domains fused=better.

>>Alyce not actual dictator. Magi League is mostly lead by power hungry evil mages
>Easier to manipulate. That and cutthroat is pretty normal in politics.
Absolutely. I just wanted to clarify that no all the points were supposed to promote a stance. I was looking at an honest appraisal of both sides.
I concluded "RSK goes first", but while SOME points support my final decision. other points are neutral (supporting neither side) or even support taking the magi league first.

>>Lots of powerful magi would be able to nullify our hero units, requiring us to burn through soldiers to overcome them.
>Depends on the mages we have and the levels of bonuses.
Generally we can expect more mages, and them being higher level compared to any other nation in the world. And remember how painful the fight against darius was? with their mages shielding their troops against us while shooting at us, and later bombarding us? It is gonna be like that but worse.
Or the fight where we stood there with HMK and took a beating from mages which got lynn upset?
in general when we are out maged the fights hurt a lot

actually wait, no I didn't put those points in, I should add them for next time.
RSK
>Will be upset by us conquering the small royals to our north. (explicitly stated by QM).

Magi
>High on mages, low on regular soldiers
>Army has few soldiers, lots of mages (relatively; probably sitll more soldiers than mages)
>World's greatest center of research. Can't be allowed to tech up.
>Will compete with us for sources, especially when finding out they are not sealed when discovering undine.
>>

I am betting that specializing = efficiency. to the point where it is better to emulate similar result via different means
you can kill directly via death magic, or via elemental magics, or via buffing; all result in dead opponent so specializing in one to make it stronger is better than getting a meshup of all three.
I think the times it would be better to mash them up is when we can get synergy for a "whole greater than sum of its parts)
>>
>>31702708
>RSK gonna hate us taking over Orange
Shit, I missed that...

Well, I'd say once we absorb Taour, we should
>Solidify all borders to the south, perhaps even start some strong holds?
>Push into Orange territory, prepare for RSK backlash
>>
>>31702746
>>RSK gonna hate us taking over Orange
oh, he didn't say hate, just not happy with it
how much they are gonna be upset. we aren't sure yet
