You wake up from your sleep feeling, for once, rested and refreshed.

It's noon, obviously. If someone judged you only from the hour you wake up at, he'd probably end up having a very unflattering opinion of you.

TIa is still sleeping blissfully next to you.

Still in bed, staring at the roof, you think about your schedule for the day.

Dinner is at 8. It's going to be a large, important and formal dinner to discuss the current situation between important personages in Tianna, and probably your chance to get to know them better as well.
Of course, dinner STARTS at 8, which means that it would probably be a good idea to show up sooner. The earlier you'll be there, the more time you'll have.

After sunset, the celebration for Dancing Smoke will take place along Main Street, the large road that from the castle cuts the city in two and goes all the way down to the docks. There will be bonfires along the way, music, and, of course, your dance.

You know that Amata wants to consider that feast as more of a generic victory celebration (and probably a good PR event for both her and you) and less as a purely religious festival for Dancing Smoke.

On the other side, you DID promise to the goddess that this would have been her celebration.

...And, on the third side, your dance is also meant to be a prayer and a thanks-giving to the Unconquered Sun and Luna, the way you thought of it. This will probably not sit well with some people.

You just hope that you'll manage to handle things so that no one ends up offended... Or at least without any major incidents.

Besides, if you want to spend your four daily hours training your followers, you better hurry.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble recently Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. She's in the western city of Tianna as a guest of queen Amata (DB), an old friend. Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and half the island is controlled by paranoid Lunars. Fun times.
It's the day of your victory celebration over the Wyld. Things are about to get political. And dancy.

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=zenith

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

Regarding the UMI debates that keep popping up every now and then:

I've seriously been considering removing UMI altogether from this game if that helps defuse the situation, but that would effectively mean siding with one of the two groups, and I don't want to do that.

I'll repeat how I treat UMI in this game: UMI make or destroy whole intimacies in a single shot, while normal persuasion builds them slowly over several attacks. UMI is a very powerful tool for social characters. That's it.
It's not inherently evil. Of course, Immaculate propaganda disagrees with that, but then again Immaculate propaganda disagrees with everything you'll ever do (except turning yourselves in).

So, I've decided to keep UMI an option, that you will be free to buy or not buy, and, if bought, use or not use. If you want to discuss if UMI is inherently evil or mindrape, or if it's a legitimate application of social powers, that's for the Exalted General, because it would be off topic.

My main problem with the UMI discussions is that they make the thread almost unreadable, especially for newcomers or people not used to Exalted, and it eats postcount like crazy, sending the threads faster into autosage. If you don't want this to happen, please limit yourselves to the normal one vote per person for buying charms, or for using them, like normal.

Damnit. Forgot to make that layer opaque.
(I don't even have access to photoshop now, so I'll fix that later when I get back home.)

Yes, you have still 8 free XP. there was a lot of consensus on THS but very few votes for other stuff.

Current list is:

[dawn]
Fists of Iron (1 Ess, Scene. +1 damage once per combat, per enemy)
Heaven Thunder Hammer (Permanent, succesful hits have knockback effect)
Mob-Dispersing Rebuke (1 Ess. Say something threatening or make a show of strength, roll social + dawn. Unless a unit has a heroic leader who can beat your roll, the unit immediately routs and disperses.)

[zenith]
Husband-Seducing Demon Dance (1 Ess. A performance you give causes anyone seeing it to instantly gain a positive feeling for you (love, respect, starry-eyed admiration, etc))
Terrifying Glorious Presence (upgrades Majestic Radiant Presence: on top of its effect, all social attacks have 1 automatic success)
Inspired Performance Style (1 Ess, Scene. Add +3 to all social rolls to influence large groups of people through oratory or performance)
Phantom-Conjuring Performance (Perm. can fashion phantasmagorical images and sounds from your own Anima)

[twilight]
Spirit-Discerning Glance (Permanent. Allows you to always see spirits, even when they are invisible or dematerialized)
Courtier's Eye Technique (1 Ess, Can tell someone's backgrounds)

[night]
Graceful Crane Stance (permanent, gives you supernatural balance and lightness of step)
Lightning Speed (permanent, vastly improves your running speed)

[eclipse]
Sea Wolf Style (1 Ess, add +3 to all ship-handling rolls for the scene.)
Merchant's Wisdom (1 Ess, Scene, add +3 to all commerce, economy and bureaucracy-related rolls for the scene.)

>>
>>31380975

This is a clash of fundamental viewpoints and will be difficult to resolve by arguments. Just today thought it occurred to me that it could be possible to resolve scientifically.

We could prove that persuasion works like mind control in Creation. It would require us to be an asshole, but Maka's 10 social dice are in fact like mind control when compared to a 2 dice commoner. We could pick one at random and over a span of a week talk him into throwing himself into the volcano without using UMI. Also we could prove that Talking to the Heart is UMI that way.

That would settle the debate.

(EF, I am sorry if this sets off another shitstorm. I am weak and have an urge to play optimally which works like an UMI against me...)

You silently get out of bed, leaving Tia to sleep peacefully, and, after a quick bath, get dressed with your tabard, freshly cleaned by Millian.

You don't feel particularly hungry, though, especially not after the maid warns you: "If you can stand it, I'd suggest skipping lunch."

"...Is dinner going to be that big?" You wonder.

"Yes. A bit of a tradition here for large formal dinners. You have to get there with an appetite. Don't worry, there will be enough to eat for everyone."

"I see." You reply. "Do you have any idea where Regis is?"

"I have no idea." She replies. "Maybe at the docks in that horrible tavern, getting smashed with those other filthy pirates."

You sigh. "I don't think he's like that. Plus, be a bit more respectful of them."

She pouts.

"Oh, if you're looking for Regis", a passing maid who overheard your conversation remarks, "He's down in the laundry helping out."

"Can you please call him?" You ask her.

After a few minutes, Regis, wearing an apron over his uniform, reaches you. "Called for me, Maka?- oh. Uh, hello Millian."

She doesn't reply, and they both keep you between them.

"So, Regis!" You try and break the uncomfortable silence. "How are you feeling?"

"Uh... okay? Why?" He asks.

"Oh, I was wondering if you're up for some training."

After another glance to Millian, he replies, looking up to you: "Well... okay!"

"Right! to the courtyard then! Millian dear, can you go and check on the preparations for the dinner and the festival? If it's all right then come and meet us again there, we'll be there for a while."

She nods and leaves, coldly.

Once she's gone, as you start walking towards the courtyard, Regis sighs. "...I can't figure out what's her problem. Are girls all like that?"

"I'm a girl, too, you know." You smile.

He stares at you like he doesn't get the point.

"...What, you weren't thinking of me as one?" You joke.

As you walk in the courtyard, you see Samiel already there with a team of Tianna soldiers, practicing sword swings with them. "Oh, Maka. Where were you?"

"Sleeping." You admit. "How are things going on your end?"

"I wanted to handle security at the festival, but mom insists that since I took part in the battle I should take part in the celebrations as well." He replies, not looking too thrilled about it.

"You're afraid Smoke will do something inappropriate."

He blushes. "I'm SURE Smoke will do something inappropriate."

"Good point." You reply. "So, Regis." You continue, turning to him.

As you run laps around the courthouse with Regis, you casually ask him: "...So, what's the problem with Millian?"

"I don't know!" He complains. "She just... keeps acting hostile to me, gives me the cold shoulder..."

"Do you have any idea why?" You poke him verbally.

"I think she hates pirates, and she thinks I'm one."

"She keeps blushing and being shy around you. Besides, when I saw her yesterday she was reading an adventure novel about pirates."

Regis speeds up.

"I think she likes you." You catch up with him.

"Th-that's stupid." He replies. "She keeps badmouthing me. She's ironic and sarcastic and abrasive . She's self-important. She looks down on me."

"What about you?"

He slows down. "What... what do you mean?"

"How do you feel about her?"

You run a whole lap without a reply from him.

"Well?"

"...She could be cute if she wasn't so annoying all the time." He admits.

"She doesn't know how to handle you. You don't know how to handle her either." You grin. "First girlfriend?"

"I- She's NOT my girlfriend!"

"She could be if you play your cards right, mark my words." You run beside him, lowering your voice as you notice Millian arriving in the courtyard and looking around until she spots the two of you. She sits on the palace's stairs and waits, looking nervous.

"I-I-I don't WANT her to be!" He lies.

"I don't know who's being less honest about this: you or her." You notice he hasn't spotted her yet. "Oh, look, there she is."

"WHERE?" Caught by surprise, he stops and looks around frantically. "I, I mean."

"Keep up your pace!" You urge him to keep running. He clumsily picks up.

These two are so cute and innocent.

While you keep up your training (and notice that Regis is training three times as hard and seriously now that he's being watched by Millian, even if she tries to not make it apparent and pretends to be bored and uninterested), you mull about it a bit.

Here's my stance on the issue - I'm going to make this one post and be done.

When we went to the Exalted General to discuss it, someone made a point that I found convincing.

UMI is cool. It's a neat thing to explore when you're a single person controlling in a single character. It's cool because it IS a slippery slope, kind of shady, and dubious. All of that makes it neat, because your character can have internal drama over what to do, and when to use it.

But that kind of drama is TERRIBLE for something consensus-based like a quest, because it will lead to unending arguments. It will lead first to argument over whether to get it, THEN to argument over whether to use it, AND THEN to argument over whether using/getting it in the first place was justified. It's bad news, and will keep being bad news, basically forever, because this kind of controversial stuff - despite being the bread and butter of character-drama in a normal game - is basically toxic to the Quest format.

For all of those reasons, my suggestion would be to remove UMIs entirely from the quest. Even if we can agree to get them without massive shitstorms - which seems impossible - they'll just lead to even more, and possibly even worse, shitstorms down the road. They're bad news, and that bad news isn't going to get better, because they're endlessly controversial.

I think you're inviting a world of grief.

Anyway, that's the last time I talk about UMI until voting comes.

Good luck.

You quietly think about it, lap after lap.

Your personal experiences with the other sex, or with sex in general, have been many and varied (and have gotten only crazier with your Exaltation), but despite this, or rather, BECAUSE of this, you're not terribly sure you know exactly what to do in this situation.

You decide 'tis best to be discreet about it. If something will happen between them, it must happen naturally, without being forced by meddling outsiders like you.

No matter how hard you want to meddle!

Still... A BIT of meddling is gonna be alright? Right?

You keep Regis bust for the afternoon, helpung him build up stamina and endurance. You have him punch through sand in a barrel and kick a wooden post, until he manages to break both, to teach him how to use strength and economy of motion.
Finally, you have him do stretching and aerobics and try things like handstands, splits and sommersaults.

By the end of the training session, Regis is, understandably, destroyed, drenched in sweat. You release the Essence patterns you had vowen in him, hoping his body will readjust without problems. it's probably going to be easier on him, since he's so young, than it would be on someone older.

You think that, as far as physical strength and agility go, he should be about on par with what you can do without spending Essence.

Endurance-wise, it's another matter: You don't feel tired or winded at all, despite four hours of continuous exertion. You smile to yourself, satisfied by the knowledge that you are learning better ways to control and manipulate your own body's capabilities.

"Millian, can you help regis up and carry him to his bed? I might have gone a bit too hard on him." You ask the maid, who is still staring at the shattered barrel, mouth agape.

You look around: it's about five in the afternoon, and the dinner is probably being prepared if not ready by now, with the guests arriving to the castle. It's a bit early, so you might have time to do something else first, or you could just show up.
Samiel has left the courtyard some time ago, kidnapped by some maids who, under Amata's orders, wanted to put him into some actually fancy clothes instead of his usual armor, by the way.

What kind of charm would it be to always look perfect? Dirt and blood slide off us like we're a no-friction surface - except when they stick around long enough for a battle-maiden look, then slide right off at the end of the scene - our hair is always perfect, we never get body odor, and so forth. The charm equivalent to the Collar of Dawn's Cleansing light.

There's a lot of things and not a lot of time, unfortunately.

First of all, you head for the throne room, in hopes of finding Amata there, and manage to intercept her just in time as she was about to leave.

"Oh! Maka! Here you are." Looks like she was looking for you too. "Man, you look a bit messy. Didn't Millian clean your tabard yesterday night? It's already all dusty, not to mention you."

"Yes, I trained Regis in the courtyard a bit." You say, noticing. "...I should probably get a change of clothes and a bath? Are any of your maids free?"

"Well, some" She stretches. "It's been a busy day for me, but I have a bit of free time right now. Come with me." She grabs your hand and opulls you across the corridors of the castle, up to the bathhouse.

"Amata, you're the queen here. You shouldn't really involve yourself in this kind of busywork."

"Consider this personal thanks for dealing with the Wyld and securing an alliance with the Three Rivers, then." She smiles, checking the water's temperature. The castle has a water heating system, which you're fairly sure can be blamed on either Amata or Irene, but, in either case, a great invention.

Gem, being a volcanic city, had easy access to hot water, of course, but it was different.

She invites you in the bath with her as you both undress."So, are you ready for the big event?"

You let the hot water soak into you. You weren't really feeling tired, but this is still a great sensation. "I have a dance routine ready. I'm going to pair with Tia."

"Can Tia dance?" She wonders, stepping in right after you.

"Don't ask her that." You reply. "She's afraid she'll ruin everything. I wasn't expecting her to be so nervous."

"Really." She notes. "She's usually even more shameless than you. I mean, the things she did to us on that bed~"

You nod knowingly. "But don't worry, we practiced together and she's good enough. I'll carry the performance."

"Do you have a speech ready?"

You weren't expecting that. "Speech?"

>Yes

Are we voting on whether or not we'll give a speech, or answering Amata on whether we prepared one? In any case, my vote is for the former. We are awesome at all things social and inspirational. It would probably also help our image.
>>
Rolled 9

>>31383937
I think it's whether or not we had one prepared, I still want to give one, we'll be great at it, plus if it's expected of us it'll sway more people in our favor
>>
"...No? What do you mean a speech?"

"The after-dinner celebration." She grins, leaning on to you.

"...Isn't that just the dance?"

"The dance is for the FESTIVAL, which is a religious event for Dancing Smoke. But before that, this is a celebration of out alliance's victory on the Wyld, which means you'll have to nto just talk about it at the dinner, but also make a speech in front of the populace that will assemble in the square."

"...You think about everything." You have to admit, it's brilliant. "Even if it's a feast for Dancing Smoke, you still want to use it to your own ends."

"The people of Tianna have seen you coming and going for the last couple of weeks, but there's still no real official statement or proclamation from you." She says, pouring maybe a bit too much liquid soap on you. "You need to think of something to say that they will like. Something reassuring and non-threatening, but meaningful and important, that will still make an impression on them."

"And without showing my castemark." You note.

"Everyone knows you're an Anathema by now." She uses the word deliberately. "Don't hide it, be honest about it, but don't flaunt it. Don't use the A-word, not even to deny it. Don't get religious, and don't address the Immaculate elephant in the room." She suggests.

"Why are you groping my breasts." You interrupt her.

"The real question is: why shouldn't I?" She replies, sounding very professional about it.

After playfully molesting each other another bit, you leave your tabard in the laundry bin and follow Amata to the wardrobe. "You need a dress, of course. Something appropriate."

"You do have a lot of clothes here." You state the obvious.

In the end the dress you both end up selecting for you is fairly nostalgic. It reminds you of your old outfit in a way, the one you wore when you Exalted. It is just a bit more elaborate.

White silk, shiny and sheer, hanging from your shoulders and going down to the floor in a long, one-piece dress. The neckline is as low as it could possibly be without showing anything, but still plunging all the way below your navel, and the skirt is parted both ways up to the waist.

"...Why do you have this dress?" You wonder, wearing it. It's just right for you, fitting almost perfectly.

"Why do you have to ask that embarrassing question every time I lend you a dress?" Amata replies with a giggle. "Don't dig in the past of an old lady like this~"

You'd like to point out that Amata, even though she is quite shapely, doesn't have your same sizes, but you decide it's best not to ask now.

You experiment with a bit of jewelry, and decide to limit yourself to a golden collar and a couple of bracelets and earrings. Nothing too showy.

"What about my hair?"

"Your hair is perfect, dear." She replies. "I'd say you're ready."

Not really

If done right and it covers our castemark, it might leave people wondering if it's just a really shiny jewel. Could be neat.

Wearing jewely specifically to make our caste mark look even cooler might be considered "flaunting it", I suppose.

Ypu can't cover your caste mark even with a metal helmet. It would just shine through.
Jewelry, though, would catch some of the excess light and disperse it sideways. Or that's what I imagine

After parting ways with Amata and having a bit of a stroll around with your new dress, you ask around for where Smoke might be.

The answers of the palace's servants bring you to... Samiel's room.

Why aren't you surprised by this?

As you enter, you're greeted by a half-undressed Samiel being chased around the room by Smoke. Both screaming.

"What the heck are you people doing?"

"MAKA! Help me! This maniac is-" Samiel calls out to you, but this distraction proves fatal. Dancing Smoke grabs him by the ankle and without hesitation just slams him on the ground, then tosses him on the bed, still stunned and with the air knocked out of him. She proceeds to undress him.

"What." You reply. You're about to move in and stop her, when you notice that you are not assisting to a case of rape, but rather, she is changing his clothes by force.

It sure looks like it, though.

"What are you doing." You reiterate.

Smoke just replies, without turning to look at you: "No, well, see, I wanted to see how well Samiel would look in this, but then he said no, and then I said that I wanted to see it real bad, and he said that it wasn't going to happen, and so."

She takes a step back.

"Now, now, now." You step in and forcibly separate the two, just as Samiel recovers and tries to stand back upright.

Disheveled hair. A black shirt, buttonless, open down to the navel. A pair of clingy black low-rise satin trousers. A half-done necktie hanging loosely around his neck giving his outfit a touch of red.

...You have to agree on this one. it's maybe a bit too dark, uniformly black and dark red like that. But maybe that's her taste, and it's not something excessively inappropriate. Well, not anymore than your own outfit at least. Could be worse.

But.

"...I understand that you don't do a lot of... social events, Smoke, but this kind of behaviour? No. Just no."

"...What. What did I do wrong?" She frowns. She really doesn't realize it.

"...You don't really know how to behave, and that will hurt you if you're not careful." You point out. "It will make you unpopular, and hated. Especially by Amata. And Amata is, I'd like to remind you, both the person granting you this festival, and the mother of Samiel."

Samiel who is, meanwhile, back on his feet, furious. "...Yes! Exactly! Stop acting like this, damnit! Do you want this to work or not?! You..." She grabs her by her bone-like tail as it swings around idly, prompting a sudden, surprised cry from her.
"...stupid..." With a large swing, she lifts her in air and stars spinning her around...
"...BITCH!" And with a last effort, she brings her down in the exact way she just did with him, slamming her face, hard, against the pavement, which cracks under the impact.

"...ok, look, I'm sorry..." She mumbles, obviously unharmed. "I just... couldn't help myself. I thought you looked great like this, and want... I want you to keep it for the dinner! Will you do it? For me?"

Samiel, who, still mad as hell, was clearly about to set fire to his clothes, stops as he hears those words. He turns to you. "Um, Maka?"

You nod. "You look fantastic. You could try rocking that look for a night and see the reactions." You turn to the goddess. "But, reallym, you need to ask in a nicer way."

"I'm sorry..." She stands up, looking genuinely worried, like she really wasn't aware that forcing your way like that was a social pas faux.

"Say it to him." You point at Samiel. She's like a kid sometimes.

"...I'm sorry." She repeats, addressed to the dragon-blooded this time.

It seems that Samiel has become a little more confident around her at least, you think. If he'll be able to keep her under control, and if this relationship will last, you have no idea. But, at least for now, things are progressing. Slowly.

You can only hope they aren't going to completely ruin something important today.

"Oh, don't worry. It's fine." She smiles. "I'm sure it'll be great."

"Another thing: Our dance Will also be symbolically dedicated to the Unconquered Sun and Luna, our patron gods."

She makes a funny face.

"...I thought it was..."

"For you? Yes, it is. But I am the priestess of another god, who is your superior. I can't very well ignore him now, can I?"

She grumbles a bit.

"...Look." You drag your chair a bit closer to her, sitting on the bed. "I don't know what your standing is with the Unconquered Sun, but... if you want to associate with me, you should work on improving it, right? You only have to gain from it."

"Okay, okay." She replies. "But make sure that the festival will be AMAZING."

After leaving Samiel's room and checking the time of the day, you head towards Irene's. You still have about one hour before the dinner officially starts, which should be about at sunset.

As you open the door (forgetting to knock) you find Irene wearing her best military dress uniform, in front of her room's mirror, trying to get the perfect fix on her hair. "Maka!" She turns to you noticing your entry.

"Hey." You wave, then hesitate as you see her launching towards you "Makaaa!"

The collision is pretty hard, but it's just a breeze compared to Tia's tackles, really. You spin her around a couple of times. "I missed you!"

"Yeah, I did, too." She replies. "SO SAMIEL TOLD ME WE CAN INCREASE OUR HEARTHSTONE SUPPLY!"

"Well, we'll need to build the manses first, but sure." You reply, a bit surprised.

"Did you find anything interesting? Any fae-built weapon, any hidden giant robots-"

"Uh, just fought a bunch of Behemoths." You make light of it all. "How were things here?"

"Boring." She gently pushes you on the bed. "Very boring."

"Uh, my dress-"

"You look better without." She climbs on the bed as well, gently sliding her hands into it, looking very determined.

"But last night-"

"Last night Tia and mom completely monopolized you." She complains. "I want my fill too."

"I don't want to arrive late, and neither should you." You warn her with a smile, taking her in your arms as she takes you in hers.

"I just need to recharge my batteries a bit." She replies.

"Charge all you want." You invite her.

"You're trying to get me addicted."

"Is it working?" You think you can allow yourself to be a bit smug here.

About half a hour later, you both join the rest of the table together with the other late-ish arrivals, which include Tia, who arrives just a moment after you.

The room is already quickly crowding with people, some familiar, some entirely new faces. The seat reserved for you is next to Amata, one of the most prestigious places at the table. Tia is on your other side. She steals you a kiss (a rather long one... less like stealing and more like full-on bank robbery) before sitting down. "You look great."

"Thank you." You nod, and simultaneously wave to Irene as she takes her place on the other side from Amata.

As the first plates begin to appear, carried by the castle's maids and servants, you fix your attention on the man in frond of you: weirdly overdressed, eyepatched, and sporting a manic grin.

"You're the famous Maka I hear so much about, YES?" He asks all of sudden, brandishing a chicken wing in your direction.

"...yes?" You wonder what his deal is.

"Right, I haven't introduced you yet." Amata nods. "Maka, meet admiral Rajan Hazaakaa, the commander of Tianna's navy."

"What's left ot it at least." He replies immediately, putting the chicken wing back on the plate and cleaning his hand with a towel before offering it to shake. "A PLEASURE! What do you have to say?"

"..:Death Atoll?" You ask, turning to Amata.

"The suspected Lintha base in the vicinities." She explains with a sigh.

"Suspected MY BALLS, your Highness." He slams an empty bottle of wine on the table before uncorking it and slowly pouring it into his glass. "I still don't understand why you don't believe my reports!"

"It's not that I don't believe them." She groans. "Last time you tried to find this "Death Atoll" place, you lost two triremes."

"Which proves that I was right." He chugs it. "It's in that area, otherwise they wouldn't have sunken me ships." He turns his head to you with a jerky motion. "Am I right or what?"

"Uh... maybe?" You concede. "Why weren't you able to defeat them, by the way."

He stares into the distance. "They have a devil ship, gal."

"A devil ship?"

"Devil ship, yea. Hundred fifty feet from stern to prow." Refill and rechug. "Does forty knots in a calm sea. Turns water to blood. Shoots spines of bone large as ballista bolts. Fires curse beam from the eyes, that boil the flesh away. Crew of the meanest motherfuckers this side of Bluehaven and that's saying something." Refill, and chug again. "And captained by the black-heartedest bastard that ever set sail."

You're not too sure that that counts as a word. "And you want me to defeat that monstrosity."

"Nay." He fills YOUR glass now. "I want you to help me take it out. But I'll be the one to sink a harpoon in each of its three blasted, coal-black hearts and to hang its captain from the mast of my ship."

"It's personal." You note.

"Personal as BALLS." He stares into your eyes.

You rub your temples, trying to follow this Rajan fellow.

"Alright. Shipping is important for Tianna, and taking the Lintha down a peg was something I wanted to do anyway. I have three crews, but they're on small, light vessels, underarmed and untrained. This action will have to wait until I'm ready."

"If you could get Princess Lez there to agree to mounting her Essence cannons on ships it would go a lot finer." He whispers.

"Princ- oh, you mean Irene." You wonder if you should act offended at him for calling her like that, but you decide that, well, you can't blame him at all for being right. "She's really afraid to lose them in the sea."

"But if we could get better shipments without the fear that they're gonna get raided to hell and back by those monsters, we could import Jade ore and precision components from Coral." He points out.

"A compelling argument." You admit. "Did you try making that point to Princess Le- Irene?"

"Billion times." He shrugs wildly. "She says she's not willing to risk. but maybe you can talk her into it." He elbows you. "I mean, you two have a thing going, no?"

"Whatever do you mean?" You play it dumb.

"You waltz in here together, your dresses perfect except so slightly messed up, hair likewise. You're a damn sexy gal. Irene probably went through every single maid of this palace. Do the math."

You break a smile. "Irene? Wasn't she supposed to be pretty clumsy in social situations?" You point at her, who is apparently "entertaining" a magistrate with the technicalities of Type-4 Motonicvalve dischargers and their application in building of harmonics-proof solid state essence impactors.

He just makes a really weird sneer at you that you have a hard time understanding and then refills his glass of wine. You take a sip from yours. "How long?"

"I can't be sure. I have a pretty busy schedule, and so do my men. We could leave tomorrow to reunite our crews. My officers have a complete cycle of rearming, repairs and recruitement planned after that, but I don't know how long that could take."

"Off-island?"

"...I was thinking, yes, but knowing of this kind of monster..."

"What if they run in the Lintha?"

You drink your wine. "You make a good point. Could Tianna arm and repair the ships?"

"Depends." He grins. "How about joining forces?"

"Aren't we already?" You wonder.

"Literally, not metaphorically." He points out. "Incorporate your ships in the Tiannan navy."

Right, no one else knows of your and Amata's plans to marry. Once it happens, your fleets will effectively be a single force, at least administratively and legally.

How should you answer?

>Okay, as long as you treat them fairly.

Basically nonexistent. Every time they put a fleet together, the Lintha sink it.
>>
>>31389344
>>31389383
As of now, two triremes, which are larger and more powerful than your sailing ships, butmuch more costly (essentially only an actual country like Tianna can maintain them), and several small vessels used for scouting and coast patrol (smaller than your ships; basically little boats)

Overall, a bit more firepower than you, probably better trained. Still undersized for Tianna.
>>
>>31389383
I wonder if we can get some more pirates under our command in Freeport? We could also take over that place while we are at it.

We could always siphon some men from the regular army if our ships are undermanned.

They probably are. Kimbery is fond of twisting some of her first- and second-circle demon progeny into aquatic vessels for favoured Lintha.

The ship itself would be alive, and a demon.

>>31389414
For context, this is a trireme. It has a sail for long-distance travel, but they're small, which makes it slow for long-term transit compared to a proper sailing ship. It has oars that need to be manned with a large crew when traveling short distances and engaging in combat. The oars let it be EXTREMELY maneuverable and quite fast.

The main downside is that they're slow for long distances and absolutely require a large crew compliment. They're limited to only sails when using a skeleton crew, while a sailing ship can operate at somewhere approximating normal capacity with a skeleton crew.

All in all, if we have the technical expertise to build Age of Sail ships, we should. If not, these are a SOLID choice too. Junks would also be a good option.
>>
Rolled 5

What's the stance on slavery here?
Are the triremes oared by slaves?
>>
>>31389414
So he lost fully half of Tianna's triremes?
>>
>>31389607
They're oared by marines. Unlike your ships, whose main tactics are hit-and-run, archery and small siege engines, boarding only when the enemy is weaker or weakened, triremes mostly aim at slashing the oars off enemy oared ships, ramming them, and/or directly boarding them right away using their larger crew complement.

In Tianna slavery is allowed, but uncommon. Most of them are debtors, since Tianna diesn't engage in many wars of conquest and has little outside trade. There are laws protecting them against mistreating, though they don't have full citizen rights.

>>31389692
Yes.

>>31389260
It makes a kind of sense to incorporate them, since we're doing the same with Amata. Still, I really like how our captains have developed under us as their sole boss. I don't want to mess with that. I think one of them would probably be a good admiral one day, anyway.

You point at him. "I'll leave my men under your orders, but I want you to treat them properly. Or I'll get angry."

"Don't worry, gal." He reassures you. "I'm actually glad ta get some people with experience and actual ships. Skips all the training parts and goes right to the point."

"Still, training is important, and I know some Charms that improve it." You point out. "Wouldn't you mind if I helped your men as well?"

"Well, at this point they're ALL my men." He points out. "So you can be sure they'll only have the best I can provide. Can't fight a war on bad ships, or bad men."

"About that." You reply. "I'll be honest here."

"I LOVE honesty."

"How do I know I can trust you as a commander? You just admitted you lost half your fleet in your last battle. That isn't a very good record."

His face sullens. "Did you ever lose a battle? Did you ever REALLY lose a battle? Broken, defeated, completely crushed beyond all hope. Seeing good men do their best and still die through no fault of their own, crushed by an overpowering foe against which no skill or power you have is a match? All blamed on yourself, because you unknowingly accepted a battle you had no hope of winning?" He leans closer, and you can see a hint of madness under the layers of regret clouding his one good eye. You think about it for a minute, but nothing comes to mind.

"...I'll trust you with the lives of my men for the moment, Rajan. Until you've proven yourself in battle. But."

"But?" he asks.

"But with some conditions."

"I'm listening." he invites.

"First of all: I'm still their leader. When you command them, you respond to me."

Amata, who was following your conversation, chimes in: "Rajan, you will consider Maka's orders as if they were my own."

"As you wish." He replies.

"Also, you're not going to set sail or commit my men to battle or life-risking operations without my approval."

He nods. "That all?"

"That's all." You say. "Was that clear?"

"Clear as balls." He nods.

"Just..." You relax in your chair. "...bring them all back alive. My men, yours... yourself as well."

"I'll do my best." He nods.

As the dinner continues and the courses become lighter and smaller, you find out that people start standing up and changing seats every now and then, to chat with other people or groups around the table. Now, with the stomachs full and the alcohol flowing, conversations become more involved.

This might be your good chance to get to know some other people around the table. Make more friends and allies.

...Considering the news that Amata will drop on them in the near future, it's probably a good thing to do.
