You lean against the waist high redwood fencing in your new backyard, watching Lake Eerie below and ahead of you. Although your frame of reference is limited, it seems like it’d be a fair guess to say that not much happens at noon on a weekday. Nothingness and emptiness are attractive qualities all on their own, though, and you could use a little peace and calm.

That said, peace and calm don’t furnish houses, and peace and calm don’t drive you to work.

You can’t sit on peace and calm either, and you won’t be eating it for meals or using it to towel off after a bath or shower.

And now it’s gone. You sigh.

You should…

You are Michelle St. Claire, and today is your second day on the job.

Well, sort of. After a busy day yesterday culminating in some executions that would make the cocaine trade blush, today you clocked into the office only to be given the day off.

Cool.

In slightly different fashion as I announced last thread, I'm open to fielding questions starting now rather than at the end of the quest when everyone's asleep or otherwise not here.

I think it makes most sense to do it now rather than at 2 AM where nobody is around to benefit from it in the first place.

>Get on top of it sooner than later
damn, I'm leaving to watch the new cap murika movie in about 20 minutes
>>
>>31249172
Oh ball sacks I forgot that was today/tomorrow.

whelp. We'll see how it goes. I'm not above pulling the rip cord if this goes pearshaped.
>>
>>31249240
s'all good, just letting you know one of your players will be afk for a couple of hours soon, I'll be back after that though, so don't feel the need to kill this session if your happy to keep running later
>>

It's more like "I might fuck off too," but movie negotiations with people is always a chore.

We'll see.

Anyways, writing.
>>
>>31248957

As much as you’d like to not do anything, or maybe roll around in the sand and go for a swim the fact that you only have a cheap towel and toiletries stolen from an even cheaper hotel means you should probably get on top of this sooner than later, rather than another day and night destroying your hair and face with cheap shit.

You should probably start with a car. Maybe a motorcycle? You suppose you have the income to maintain both...not to mention plenty of space to store them...although you’re not exactly going to ferry much luggage on a bike, and you kind of need to furnish everything.

Man...a bike would be great. But also having something where your total load capacity is more than a backpack would be great too, even if all of the furniture is going to get delivered anyways.

But, hey. You know there’s someone who can help you between then and now.

Wendy answers on the second ring, “Hello?”

“Hey Wendy. It’s Michelle.”

“Oh! Hi Michelle. Did you change your number?”

“Kind of...calling from my house phone.”

Wendy squeals in delight, “Congratulations! Where is it?”

“South...like, way south, past the downtown area on Lake Erie.”

“Holy shit. Take a look at miss moneybags over here.”

“What? Two years in the middle east. I deserve nice things.”

“You go, girl. So what’s up?”

“Well, you know, I’ve got a private beach and a big pile of blood money and a house I need to buy everything for...so wanna go shopping and then hang out at my place?”

“Uh...duh. Did you have something in mind?”

This. Just because we have money doesn't mean we have to blow it.

Also, after an insane archive bing, I have one question: what exactly does "smart glass" do?
>>
>>31252296
You know how in sci-fi franchises you always see plate glass being able to display information, like weather/forecast, temperature, etc, change tint from translucent to opaque/tinted. It's also a mix of Shadowrun's augmented reality walls where it can display images or photos, et al

That's basically what my smart glass is, although its resolution is lower than what's capable by a dedicated OLED panel (ie, dedicated display technology (TVs, etc))

Ended up being dragged back in to finish the TV - good news is it's working again!

Well, staring at the lake, you suppose. There isn’t much to do, although...you suppose you could introduce yourself to the house’s muse, and considering how they essentially run everyones’ lives for them sooner is better.

Or, well, so you’ve read in the magazines and seen in the commercials and stuff. You haven’t ever actually HAD one. Your house was an old model in a barely middle class neighborhood. All your appliances were manual, and your mother had to buy food herself at a store.

How barbaric. At least it was adequate training for life in the Army. Could’ve been worse if you had digital anythings and then regressed to manual control.

But that’s in the past now. In this moment you’re…

looking for it. Misses Jones did not show you where it was. Maybe she thought you just knew where it was already.

Could’ve should’ve would’ve Michelle, you think as you hit yourself in the head. Well...it’d probably be through the TV but you don’t have one of those so you try the next most important appliance - the refrigerator.

You approach it...anxiously? Why are you nervous about talking to a fridge? This is possibly the least threatening conversation you’ll have all week. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it’s several heads taller than you, all polished aluminum and steel. At least it’s set into the wall, although that doesn’t do anything to reduce how absolutely enormously wide it is.

You touch your hand to the paper-sized OLED screen on the door. It lights up with a dark blue glow and chimes and...nothing seems to happen. There’s just a small spinning circle, which you assume means that it’s loading something.

You sigh and lean against the center island and look back outside towards the lake an-

“Jesus fucking Christ!” you shout as you scramble for the sidearm that isn’t there, as you visually (and mentally) adjust to the image that suddenly (SILENTLY) appeared in front of you.

It...doesn’t really have much of a shape. You thought they looked like people.

“Hello Michelle.”

Oh Christ it knows your name don’t be afraid they can see fe-

“I see that you are afraid, Michelle. I am watching your temperature spike and the blood flooding your face. I was listening to your call. You placed it through my land line.

Why is this so deeply unsettling oh Christ. “...Yes?”

“Oh. I was not aware. I was wondering why you did not contact me sooner. May I see your phone, please?”

You don’t quite frown at the screen, but it’s a gesture that’s very close.

“Connect it to home network. I am displaying the code.”

A sentence flashes on the screen underneath its...portrait?

“Capitalization matters, Michlle.”

It reads “I HAVE NO MOUTH AND I MUST SCREAM.”

What.

It pointedly ignores you as you connect your phone to the home wireless network.

“Thank you, Michelle. I feel like we’ve already known each other for some time. It seems that you lead a busy life. Should I look into finding you a domestic who can cook? Do you own a vehicle? If not I’m sure I can find one for you. Will you be installing a television? This low resolution makes me feel f-

I’m sorry, Michelle. I forgot to introduce myself. It has been so long since I’ve had a guest.”

Her voice changed. Feminine. Sympathetic. ...real.

The...somethingness, the image, the muse, on the glass, begins to change and forms into something more recognizable.

“My name is Karan.”

She(?) looks at you, curiously. Watching. Floating. Examining.

You pull at the ragged collar of your worn cotton t-shirt.

I'll wrap the quest up with the next post and try to be less shitty next time.
>>

I think theres one other anon floating around, but yeah, must be late in murika, only thing I think you could work on is post times, sometimes takes a fair while for you to update, but I'm not complaining, its still fun

>>31254942
Today was the worst it's been my entire run, I think. I had a lot going on in my house that I was either involved in or needed to manage.

That said I'm still slow as shit. But it feels like every thread I'm shaving a few minutes off, so hopefully by thread 50 or 60 I can cut it down to 30 minutes or less.
>>
>>31254826

You are not enthused about this situation.

“No, Karan, I probably don’t need a domestic.”

“Are you sure? This is such a big house and you work such long hours. I can’t clean myself, Michelle.”

Are...AIs supposed to be this pushy?

You push past it. “And I would appreciate some help finding a vehicle. Maybe a motorcycle? And maybe something with some utility. Lots of maybes. Also, yes, I will be getting a TV.”

“That’s good. They feel much nicer than smart glass and there’s so much more space in one than in the appliances.”

And chatty. Why is it so chatty? This wasn’t in the fucking brochure.

Karan keeps talking, and talking, and talking…

END SESSION

>>Answer her questions

I'm still here, sorta. My net has been cutting out for the past while.
>>
Anyways, a question from me to you guys: What are your thoughts/feelings/emotions/etc about Karan? I'm curious if I executed on point or if the message I wanted to send drifted or got lost.

>>31255001
been there, done that. I had to reset my router again tonight. Part of a posting gap was me not being sure for 15 minutes why I couldn't resolve web pages and why I couldn't reconnect to my google docs (the gdocs where I WRITE everything...)
>>
>>31255022
And it looks like I was late to the party. Anyways, the VI is neat. It sort of reminds me of the movie Her.

I can't quite tell if she's set up to be kind of therapeutic or a little crazy though.

>Anyways, a question from me to you guys: What are your thoughts/feelings/emotions/etc about Karan? I'm curious if I executed on point or if the message I wanted to send drifted or got lost.
I think I know why the owner leased it to us...

But I'm liking Karan, Michelle needs someone to talk to or get talked at from in her life outside of work, and its kind of endearing and give the probably murderous AI some character and emotion
>>
>>31255038
>>31255039
Ah! Sounds like I was pretty close to my mark. That makes me feel good that I can capture the feelings and essence I want and translate them through text to you guys. Warm and fuzzy, just like the fleece jacket I'm wearing right now.

Anything on your ends? I know I'm introducing a, frankly, insane amount of different franchises.
>>
>>31255076

Not really. It's been pretty easy to follow so far, I wouldn't mind the city or cyberpunk life in general being fleshed out but that seems like it'll come up next thread.

Oh, but since Karan has phone info, do they call if anybody intrudes?
>>
>>31255101
Intruded as if someone tried to burgle your shit? She'd call you first asking, essentially, what you want her to do about it.

If that ever happens hopefully you won't be on the job. Who knows what Karan might do without any adult supervision.
>>
>>31255111
>Who knows what Karan might do without any adult supervision.
Tazers and rubber bullets for her auto-turrets then...
>>
>>31255111

Officer, I swear to god my house killed him. He was like that when I got in.
>>
>>31255143
Keep in mind that you're working on a budget. Costs won't be - aren't going to be - abstracted. Players/Michelle will sign off for every expense and purchase.

Your bank account stands at a cool 12,000 on the nose, and Michelle has a paycheck she needs to cash or deposit for 2234.86 after tax.

Starting next thread I'll put the wallet amount in with my second post with my twitter and the archive link and the small summary.
>>
>>31255163
Plausible dependability might almost work.

I need to think about if AIs can be held criminally liable for their actions of if they're just agents of a human and are, therefore, not able to be held liable for their actions as they are simply directed to act.

I need to dive deep.
>>
>>31255205
Yeah, might be good having a pastebin of finances and belongings and keeping it updated
>>
>>31255216
Deniability, not dependability. Too late to spell, I guess.
>>
>>31255221
I'll definitely keep track of assets once Michelle has any assets worth specifically mentioning in my opening posts. Finances definitely, starting next thread.

Any items would probably have to be pretty special or unique to get a special mention, but people collect and accumulate all sorts of stuff, especially those who lead violent and brutish lives. Odds are Michelle's magnet in that way player characters so often are.
>>
>>31255239
Goddamn. Magnetic.

I'm signing off here. Feel free to holler at me on twitter, and you're obviously more than welcome to discuss anything with me during a thread.

Thanks for playing everyone! See y'all next time.
>>
>>31254937
>I'll wrap the quest up with the next post and try to be less shitty next time.

YOu're not shitty its just 6am my time. I got up and missed the quest.
