You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You are currently serving on the front lines of the war between humanity and the BETA, aliens who dominate much of Europe and Asia and who threaten to exterminate all human life on Earth. In your most recent mission, you were able to intercept and decode a transmission outlining the enemy's projected movements for the next few weeks. The European Union's military command decide to use this opportunity to capture live BETA for research purposes.

Apparently, someone, somewhere, sometime came up with a plan to put BETA in giant fish tanks filled with a sedative that apparently can't be weaponized, or else your job would be a hell of a lot easier. The BETA have to be hauled into the tanks using giant metal nets. You have no idea how the tanks and nets are going to be moved to the battlefield, how they're going to be moved off the battlefield, or where they're going to be stored.

You'd heard rumours of elite teams capturing live BETA, but you never thought they would be true. Seriously, how are they going to move tanks filled with live, human-eating BETA from continental France to Britain? How can anyone think this could possibly end well?

You, Elaine and the rest of your combat group just watch in shock and disbelief as Group captain Hall explains how the nets work.

"This is so fucking stupid," Elaine says.

>"Yes, yes it is."
>"We've done stupider things."

Who the hell thought this was a good idea? How many people died the first time they tried it?

"Yes, yes it is." There's really no way you can argue with Elaine's assessment of the situation.

"Once the specimen enters the net, two TSFs should be enough to haul it to one of the containment tanks," Hall says. "Don't go directly against a Destroyer's momentum and you should be fine. We're hunting for a pack that should have only a few dozen BETAs in it total, and no Lasers. If the intel is wrong, we are bailing out immediately. Returning from this alive is your top priority. Am I clear?"

"Yes, sir!"

The pilots began to shuffle out as they always do after a briefing. You and Elaine stay back to let the room clear out.

"There are so many things that can go wrong with this," you say. "Containment failure during transport, containment failure at the facility, people getting killed in the actual capture attempts... You'd think the eggheads would be satisfied with whatever specimens they have on hand right now."

"Maybe they don't have any on the European front?"

"In which case they have no idea what they're doing."

Elaine groans and lightly slaps you in the back of the head.

"Thanks for that, Julian. I really wanted all those nightmares I'm going to get."

"What can I say?" You push yourself out of your chair and offer a hand to Elaine. "Reality is unpleasant."

"That's what the dreams are usually for." Elaine takes your hand and you pull her up.

The two of you head off to your lockers to get changed. No matter how stupid the mission and its objectives are, this is just another day on the job. However, it's clearly not another day on the job in the hangars when you get there.

The place is a complete mess. Tools are scattered all over the place, crews are still performing maintenance on TSFs that are supposed to be deploying in less than 15 minutes and going by all the shouting, they don't seem to know what they're doing. The place does tend to fall into chaos when Mary isn't directly in charge, but she usually makes sure to maintain some semblance of order.

"Wright must be really busy," Elaine says. "This place is usually in a much better shape. I didn't see her at breakfast either."

You'd consider looking for her, but you don't have that much time left.

The mechanics working on your Tornado scatter just as you arrive. You study your TSF with a worried look for a moment, but it appears that they really were done. It must have been a rushed job, but the exterior checks out and there aren't any warning lights in your HUD when you plug in.

You're good for your mission. You just need to decide how to approach this.

>Go for the biggest, hardest, meanest target you can find, like a Destroyer or a Grappler.

>>
>>30356416
>Go for the biggest, hardest, meanest target you can find, like a Destroyer
Destroyers are probably quite manageable once you've got a net over one, actually. Keeping them from getting up to speed and steering them via lateral movements that they can't easily resist actually seems perfectly easy.

That said, it'd require us to clear out the rest of the BETA while dodging the chosen Destroyer the whole time.

If it proves implausible to clear out the BETA while keeping a single Destroyer intact safely,

>Look for something easy, like a Tank or something.
Getting smaller BETA either way is a good idea, assuming the nets have a weave small enough that they can't easily slip out.

They're also probably easier for scientists to work on than the larger classes.
>>
>>30356416
You're not suicidal, but this is your job, so you might as well do it right.

"Elaine, how would a Tank to start things easy?"

"Sounds good," she says. "Bragging rights aren't worth this hassle."

"I'm guessing the scientists will have to make do with about a dozen Tanks."

"Too bad," Elaine says. "If they don't like it, they can do it themselves."

You walk your TSFs out of the base and head for the port, where the carriers will ferry you to the Calais base, which is now mostly back to normal. Regardless of the Round Table's political position, the EU is pouring a lot of money to keep the place operational.

"Arthur 1 and Arthur 2, this is Arthur Crown," Knight says through your communication channel. "I have your area of operation. According to our satellite coverage, you will be deal with three Destroyers, a dozen Grapplers, several dozen Tanks and an unknown number of Warriors and Soldiers. There are no Lasers in the area currently, but we will keep you updated."

An image of the group of BETA you'll be hunting down appears in your HUD. They're approximately one hour away from you, roaming around what used to be a suburban area. Narrow streets, lots of houses, some commercial buildings... This is pretty bad terrain to corral a small target. Hunting a Tank through this would be a pain in the ass.

"This isn't so bad," Elaine says. "The buildings and narrow are going to make it hard to manoeuvre our net, but they'll give us some nice ambush points if we're careful, or we could try to set up a pit trap. One of the commercial buildings must have a basement we could put a net over. What do you think?"

>"No fancy tricks. Let's force one into the open and grab it."
>"Let's try the streets. An ambush sounds like the right call."
>"We'll check out the buildings and see if we can lay a trap. The less work we have to do, the better."

"We'll check out the buildings and see if we can lay a trap. The less work we have to do, the better."

"Good," Elaine says. "I want to get this over with as soon as possible."

You both grab your end of a giant net hanging off a similarly giant rack and move away to make sure it isn't tangled up. Doing this in a TSF feels awkward to say the least, but you don't see any problems. The cables should bend rather than break, and the grids are small enough that a Tank shouldn't be able to get a good bite. In theory, this should work. It has worked, if the rumours are right. You don't want to think about how big that 'if' is right now.

With your check complete, you and Elaine head towards your area of operation, careful not to tear the net or trip on it. It's a slow flight, but it's uninterrupted.

"Knight, what's the situation," Elaine asks.

"No issues, ma'am," Knight says. "No Lasers and no reinforcements on satellite. Just be careful."

Your Tornado's infrared sensors spot the BETAs moving behind the buildings. None of them are anywhere near you and you have a clear shot to the commercial district.

Except you need to carefully manoeuvre the net through the narrow streets. You move very, very slowly, keeping an eye out on your sensors in case the BETA suddenly turn towards you. They're about 20 miles away from you, but that's still too close for comfort.

You find some ruins you could use as a pit. The basement is mostly exposed and you'd only have to clear some walls. It should be big enough to catch a Tank, but it'd be a tight fit; if the BETA is running at full speed, it might manage to just jump across the gap. It all depends on how good a pilot you are.

>You can make this work.
>Try another plan.

It's near thing, but you can make it work.

"Elaine, this looks like the spot." You start setting up your end of the net. "Be careful with the net. It has to be loose enough that the BETA will drag it down, but secure enough that it won't drop in on its own."

"Got it." Elaine deploys her own side of the net and secures it loosely with some rubble.

You take a moment to look over your handiwork. The net looks like it'll stay in place for a while, but it shouldn't be able to hold a Tank's weight. All you need to do is find a tank, lure it in and call the job done.

"This looks fine for now," you say. "Let me find us a target."

You take a look at your infrared sensors on one side of your HUD and the satellite image on the other. It looks like there's a small pocket of BETA there that look about the size of Tanks. It shouldn't be difficult to lure them in. You could also try to engage them and spare one for the trap.

>No need to engage. Just lead them to the net and grab the one that falls in.

"Elaine, I'm forwarding you the data on the target." You send the location of the BETA patch over to Elaine's TSF. "I'll clear the spares and you lead the survivors to the trap. Got it?"

"Lead the way," Elaine says.

You keep the target in your sights as you move through the street. Either they spotted you through the buildings, or you're really unlucky, because they start moving towards you as you get closer, and they're moving fast.

You're faster. You set up an ambush right next to a corner they have to pass by. You let the first one through for Elaine and gun down the rest with short bursts of cannon fire. The survivor charges you, but you get out of the way and leave it to Elaine. She dances around the Tank a bit before running back to the trap.

You follow her at a distance so that the Tank won't latch on to you as its next target. Between Elaine's IFF signal, your radar and the Tank's infrared signature, you can more or less track their progress. Then the Tank stops right over the pit trap while Elaine keeps on flying.

"Arthur 3, Arthur Crown, this is Arthur 3. Target secured." Elaine triumphantly announces your success over the channel.

You reach the trap and point your camera down. The Tank can't rip itself free and it can't bite at the cables. For the moment, it's trapped nice and good.

"Are you sure about that," Elaine asks.

"Yeah, it'll be fine. Knight, have we got any incoming?"

"No, you're still in the clear." You can feel her glare at you through the image in your HUD. Or maybe that's just the laser aimed at your retina. "You really shouldn't showboat like this."

"Oh, we're not showboating yet. I'm still flying right side up."

Elaine follows your charge through the ruins, all the way to your first target.

You come across the Grapplers and Tanks, who seem to have regrouped. The Tanks can't do anything to defend against your cannons and their corpses just get in the way of the Grapplers, make them even easier targets. The battle, if you can call it that, lasts less than five seconds.

Then a Destroyers bursts out of the building behind you. You barely manage to get out the way and avoid getting crushed, but your engines and legs have taken significant damage. Your TSF falls forward and you push and pull on the controls with all your strength to stabilize and keep standing. Through a combination of luck, skill and damn good engineering, you manage to stay standing.

"Julian!"

You can't tell if it's Elaine, Knight or both calling out to you, but it doesn't matter right now. You turn as fast as your Tornado can manage and gun through the Destroyer's flanks.

"I'm fine." You can't even hear the sound of your own voice over your haggard breathing. "I'm fine," you say again, louder this time.

"Your Tornado sure as hell doesn't look fine," Elaine says.

"It'll hold," you tell her.

"It had damn well better, because we're leaving now."

"Arthur 2 and Arthur 3, this is Arthur Crown." Knight speaks up. "Mission complete. Return with the package."

Looks like the decision is no longer yours.

You and Elaine go back to grab the flailing Tank. It's still there, tangled in the net, just like you left it. Knight uploads a flight path to somewhere in the North Sea. Looks like they'll be keeping the BETA over the water instead of somewhere inland. It won't be safe for the crews, but it'll be a hell of a lot safer for civilians.

Of course, that means you'll be flying with Elaine and Knight glaring at you in your HUD. The only way to ignore them is to shut your eyes, and even you aren't good enough to fly blind.

This going to be a very awkward and very unpleasant trip unless you do something about it. Knight's in the CIC, surrounded by people, so she can't really go at you for the moment. Elaine, however, can chew you out all she wants right until you fall asleep, assuming she'll let you sleep.

You might as well get this over with now...

"Listen, I'm sorry about what happened." You mean it, too. You've faced much worse odds in the past. This was just a training round by your usual standards.

"I know that." Both of them answer at almost the same time.

There's something to be said for fighting one's own battles, but there's no room for fighting your own battles when there's something of this scale out there.

And anyone who's able to fight but still insists on favoring their own personal agenda over helping the human race keep itself afloat isn't worth the air they're breathing.

"It didn't seem like a good time for jokes," you say. "Although I could always use more women..."

"You already have thr-" Knight starts shouting at you, but then she remembers where she is, who she's talking to, and what she's saying, and she cuts herself off, blushing furiously.

On her end of the conversation, Elaine is laughing nervously.

"I know, Knight," you say. "It's just... more complicated than fighting a war. And less important right now."

The rest of the flight is still awkward, but at least it's not all directed at you. It's more like a diffused awkwardness spread out equally between the three of you, and you feel a tiny bit better knowing you're not alone dealing with it.

You finally arrive at the fleet of... tankers, apparently, that are carrying the BETA containment tanks on their decks. All of them are filled with some sort of orange fluid, and quite a few of them contain a live BETA already. They all appear to be sedated.

You dump your Tank, still trashing around, in one of the containers and it immediately slows down and eventually stops moving entirely.

The rest of the journey back to Dover is just more of the same. Knight reports no casualties and successful missions all around, so it looks like everyone else had it easy. There's probably plenty of TSF damage to repair, but that's just business as usual.

Or perhaps not. The runways to the hangars are a complete mess and all the Round Table TSFs seem to be trying to get in at about the same time. It takes almost an hour for you to get in. You sit in your Tornado for a while to give your squadron some time to get changed. You normally wouldn't mind Elaine's company at least, but this time, you'd rather be alone.

As you'd hoped, the locker room's empty by the time you get there. Elaine must have figured you wanted privacy and gone off without you. You peel off your fortified suit and take a hot shower. Leaning against the wall, you breath slowly.

It was a simple mission. It was a simple mistake. You dealt with it. You made it back. It's over. Time to move on to the next mission.

You exhale all the stress you've been building up for the last few hours and think about your temporary transfer to Cranwell. If you ask nicely, you might be able to bring someone with you.

Mary has things to do here and this is an actual mission, regardless of how easy it is. You shouldn't bring someone as inexperienced as Knight with you. Besides, Elaine's your element lead. You can't just ditch her for a few weeks.

So you get dressed and go back to your room, hoping Elaine is there.

Which she is, once again lounging in her underwear and reading the most recent issue of the RAF's journal.

She looks up at you expectantly as you enter.

"Good evening," you say. "Or afternoon. Or night. I wasn't really paying attention on my way back."

"With the time you were taking, I thought you were out buying me an apology gift," she says.

"I can think of something." You pull out your transfer orders and show them to her. "My old instructor wants me to fly aggressor for a few weeks, show the new kids how it's done. If you'd like, I can pull some strings and have you come along."

"Sounds interesting," Elaine says. "It won't be a problem that I joined the RAF directly?"

You shake your head.

"It shouldn't be more problematic than any other thing. I'll just make some calls and see what I can pull."

"I'll take you up on that then," Elaine says. "It's been a while since I've done anti-TSF practice, so I could use a refresher."

You smile and put your transfer orders back in your closet.

"Let me see what I can do."

The base does have some landlines for personal calls, but since this technically a military matter, you can use one of the 'official business' phones that don't have very long lines in front of them. Plus, the telephone operator will know to transfer the call through to Pentecost's office.

It's a short walk to the main building where the phones are, but you're not the only one there.

The nice old lady from MI5 is there, sitting at the back of the room, staring at the door. She smiles when she sees you.

"Flying officer Reber," she says. "I'd like to ask a favour of you."

>"Bloody fucking hell..."
>"Hello, ma'am. How can I assist you?"
>"Can this wait? I need to make a call."

"Bloody fucking hell..."

You keel over and lean on the closest table to support yourself, waiting to hear what meat grinder MI5 wants to shove you through now.

"MI6 needs someone to recover a crucial component of the ZEF-19 Excalibur," she says. "That will be your primary objective. The mission will take place after your upcoming stay at Cranwell is over, so it shouldn't disrupt your plans. We wouldn't normally contact you ahead of time, but we need to have a confirmed operative before we negotiate with certain... sympathetic elements of the Soviet military."

You're apparently being prostituted to other intelligence agencies now. At least they're being considerate of your schedule.

"Your secondary objectives are to obtain the blueprints of the YF-23 Black Widow and the upcoming Soviet Su-47 Berkut, which you will be able to do with as you wish."

...

You don't *want* to be MI5's errand boy, but...

It's the YF-23 Black Widow. It's the legendary TSF that all pilots dream about at night, the ultimate weapon that got shafted because the America wanted to be ready to start World War III as soon as the BETA were dealt with. Yeah, the fuel consumption and maintenance were a little problematic, but as far as you're concerned, that's part of its appeal. You don't know how it could possibly be involved with this, but you don't care. You just want it.

Then there's the Berkut. To the best of your knowledge, it's still just a rumour. You can't help but wonder what it's like.

"I absolutely love this mission despite having no idea what it entails."

"Good," the woman says. "I believe Dodger told you about his lady?"

"You want me to recover Dodger's AI?"

"Yes, that's why we need someone with your skill set." The woman stands and brushes herself off. "We've recently tracked it to a top-secret Russian facility in Alaska. If the negotiations go well, certain elements of Russia's Cherno battalion will assist you in gaining access. The Berkut's schematics will be in the same location. As for the YF-23, one of the engineers involved in its construction is currently at the Yukon base in Alaska, working for Project PROMINENCE. I'm sure you two will get along and that you will have much engineering business to discuss. I'll provide you with the full details once your aggressor work is done."

"That sounds delightful, ma'am," you say. "Although, I was wondering if you could help me with that aggressor assignment. I'd like to bring my element lead along and she's an excellent pilot..."

"I'll make the arrangements immediately."

If you're going to have contacts in MI5 anyway, you might as well use them for something.

That's it for this evening. A bit of a slow night this time around. Pacing has been slower than I'd like lately, but I have some ideas on how to get the plot moving quicker.

Next thread will be Sunday at 7PM EST. We'll spend some time flying aggressor at Cranwell, but as always, it won't be so straightforward.
>>
>>30361195
we all agree not to tell dodger about this right?

just caught the thread, but a question. Was Bedivere's CIC person kept around? It would probably help with future Knight decisions to know if there was a CIC person to cover her absence at base, and we could probably get MI5 lady to get Knight transfered for the Aggressor training as a 3rd.
