You are Annelin Karkinos, one-handed arena champion, protector of the prince (On vacation), and Dame of the Central Empire. And you're currently on a date with Karl, Sworn of Humanity.

"Don't get too comfortable, Karl. If my track record so far holds up I'll be more metal than flesh in a year's time."

He chuckles.
"You're implying I'd care much." he says gently. "It doesn't matter to me that much what you look like."

And he smiles, a gentle grin you'd never seen from him before. Bright grey eyes shine, your heart races despite yourself.
"B-besides. I'm not... that stable, I might leave the prince eventually. I can understand you want to help him grow, but I might not be around for it."

He seems to have a mental infight over it, then comes to a decision.
"I'll deal with that once it happens, if it happens." he says gently. You'd never paid much attention to his voice before...

Damnit! Why can't you concentrate! You don't even... You can't really decide if you even like him!

The last three or four updates have been writein only. The one before that had no 'flirtatious' option. I'm not entirely sure what you're on about, what with me including lines to flirt with guys Annelin is attracted to being somehow bad.

Damn, Karl's going to make this really difficult...

Ask him if he thinks he can help Michael's martial training?

I think we've taught a good foundation, but he needs more than that to defeat his father.
>>
>>30259403
Is he only fighting his father? Because I thought he was fighting the other candidate also.
>>
>>30259450
That's only if he loses to his dad.
>>
>>30259450
No, if he fails the fight against his father, his father will choose another candidate.
>>

Hopefully his dad isn't going to fall in Michael's sword, as some misguided attempt at making up for not taking the queen's curse upon himself.

"So, uhm. Any plans for after dinner?" you ask.

"Either stargazing, or..." he shrugs. "It's up to you. I don't want to be too forward, after all." he says, as you both sip wine.

You nod, and find yourself smiling.
"I was hoping to get Mike some more instructors."

"I could teach him a thing or two about general fitness." Karl says. "Granted, we'll need some privacy."

"...What?"

"Oh. I work out in the altogether when I can."

Oh. Of course he does. What old man doesn't work out nude.

As for what Annelin says, I got not much. Maybe just agree to the stargazing.

Alright, fair enough. The last several have been writeins, I concede that. I still think that the flirty options - and actual character behaviors - are unnecessarily common. Even in contexts that don't call for them. That scene with Gina, for instance. It was so blatant that even Gina admitted it was uncharacteristic of her.
>>
>>30259762
"I know you're much more resistant to damage than the average man, but don't you ever accidentally..."

"I also recover quite quickly." he says, smiling. "And I make sure to avoid any place that's actually dangerous. I prefer most to excercise in large, open fields."

"A-ah." you manage. "Stargazing does sound nice. Someplace... secluded, maybe?" you ask.

"I know just the place." he says, pouring you more wine. You sip it gently. "Right on top of the castle. The roof is flat, and I can bring cushions."

"You should bring a blanket." you say with a smile. "In case it gets chilly." he nods as you finish your glass, and you both rise. He leads you to the courtyard, then goes to get a few things.

He holds up his hand, and he's soon wrapped in long lines of shining power. With great care, he picks you up, and leaps atop the castle.

The power slips away when he lands, and he smiles at you. The kingdom, a sea of tiny lights, stretches out before you, and above, the gods on their infinite homes span the sky. You find yourself wrapped in a blanket, resting against cushions set against a wall.

The view makes you feel so small, dwarfed by the million points in the sky and on the earth.

You feel his hand holding yours.

You come to a realization, and it hurts. Twice in as many days! You gently release his hand.

"Karl..." you manage, "As... As wonderful as this is, as beautiful as the stars are and the dinner was amazing and... and everything, everything tonight was great... I don't think we match." you manage softly. "I tried, and..." you can't find words.

"It's alright." he says, resigned. "To be honest, I didn't think it would work out either."

"Then why-"

"I had to try. I had to see if I could. I had to practice, I had to make the first step out." he takes a deep breath. "Thank you, Annelin. For giving me a second chance. I think it's more than I truly deserve." he says softly.

The pleasant warmth in your belly has spread to the rest of you, and you're too tired to say anything, slowly falling asleep.

You feel gentle hands pick you up, and gently lay you to bed and cover you. a few steps, and the door shuts.

... ... ...

You wake up and look out the window.

So... That's that. Teel isn't a factor, anymore. He leaves in a few hours. Karl and you... You've dismissed that.

You pinch your nose, with a soft sigh.

"Please tell me you're just an old man. Please."

"Folks call me Ortin." he extends a shaky hand, and you take it. "I was relaxing in my villa a ways away, when I heard there was some sort of incident here at the castle. And here is a young lady who lost her arm to protect not just my grandson, but my son in law and the kingdom both of them serve." he chuckles. "Well-done!"

"But your robes..."

"I am a cleric of Law, yes, but a rather... liberal one." he admits. "Heck, I was quite a lover of Alvin lasses in my prime, though my daughter hated my many mistresses." he shrugs. "I'm just here to see what all the hullabaloo is all about."

"Well, that's a relief. For a moment I thought I was meeting another god." you let out a sigh of relief as he chuckles. "So what do you think?"

"I think you are rather preoccupied." he says honestly. "I think you need to sort you and your boys - or girls, whichever - and simply be ready to do your job." he says. "You just seem preoccupied. Distant." he says. "But... you have talent, if you've done what I've heard about. Pray this old man no mind."

Micheal enters, and meets your eyes. He flushes, then sees his grandfather and lights up.

"Papa!" he says, rushing to his side almost like a child. "How are you!"

"I'm fine, my boy, I'm fine..."

The two get into an animated discussion, leaving you to your thoughts.

The hour is spent on small instructions, corrections, and advice, then you and him leave the elderly fellow, who you swear fell asleep.

"S-so." he manages. "What... what exactly do you have in mind?" he asks.

"Which I will use as I see fit. Impress me." you say with a grin.

"I can't very well spar with you." he says.

"You could spar with me." says the old man, directly behind both of you. H-how...

"But grandpa..."

"Trust me, if you can floor me, I'm sure she will be impressed."

We are his weapons tutor.

You don't become arena champion by underestimating small, wrinkly, smiling old men.

We were hired to be his bodyguard, not his tutor. Why do you think we're the best suited person in the area for the roll?
>>
"Isn't that dangerous?"

"I'll promise not to hurt him." the old man says. "After all, I taught his father."

"But... But dad says that his knee going sore when it rains is your fault!"

"Ah, well..." the old man strokes his chin. "We can't all be perfect, can we?"

You raise an eyebrow.
"Go for it. Educate him."

"No sword, boy." he says, leading you both back to the practice arena. "Now. Come at me."

"But grandfather..."

"Don't you insult me!"

What follows is not so much a beatdown as a beatsideways. Every time Micheal seems to have the advantage, he sent careening through the air only to land softly on his posterior. To Micheal's credit, the boy doesn't give in, trying every angle and tactic he knows, until he's hanging from a nearby wall as the result of a rather spectacular toss by his grandfather.

"It is like using a sword, but there is no sword." the old man muses with a chuckle. "But then, the Art is always better when under assault than assaulting."

"Hm?" you blink.

"It runs in the family. Acrobatics, swiftness, speed... A great hulking iron like my son in law uses is in direct opposition. And easily countered." he grumbles. "So terrible the matchup I broke his knee entirely on accident, once. Now get down from there, boy, you look right like an Alvin."

Micheal clambers down, looking quite embarrassed.

It's the sound of on hand clapping against the meat of the other forearm, in our case above the stump.

He laughs nervously, a little grin on his face. "Are you staying long?" you ask him.

"Oh, a few more days, I should think."

"Can I ask you to teach Micheal a thing or two?"

"Ah, this old man can withstand a few lessons, yet." he lets out a little cackle. "After all, how could I leave? I'm surrounded by beautiful women." he lets out a longer cackle as he heads off to what you assume is his room. Micheal is sitting on a bench nearby, practically vibrating with nervous energy.

"I... I'm sorry if I seem overeager, Annelin." he says. "I just feel like I'm finally making progress. In... everything."

"Great! Remember that."

Sit down next to him.

Let me let you in on a little arena fighter secret. Someone ability to do something and their ability to APPRECIATE something are not in step. If you're improving in skill, you may not be improving in ability to interpret and understand skills. So if you feel like you're improving in stuff, it may be because you're just improving your ability to fight faster than your ability to understand combat. If you feel like you're plateauing, it may just be because your ability to interpret and understand fighting or what have you is improving faster than your actual skills. The trick to stay ahead and never challenge someone you can't beat is therefore to make sure that you practice BOTH. The skill AND the appreciation. So don't just train to fight: watch others fight."

Suggest we go to an arena and spectate anonymously as commoners that evening. Maybe he'll pick something up.

"Come on, I'm not a kid."

"Well... Why not go to the arena and spectate with me?" you ask. "Not really much of a date, but it will help you understand some of where you're screwing up, I think."

=== END OF THREAD ===

Running out of steam, bros. I can probably muster some Q/A, if you like.
>>
>>30265584
Nah you're good.

Though could you explain what you meant by a more traditional quest?

Sequel with Annelin's kid?
>>
>>30265612
>Though could you explain what you meant by a more traditional quest?

Something with more ADVENTURE and DUNGEONS and stuff like that. Maybe something set in the Eight Hells.
>>
>>30265656
I meant more will it be a simultaneous spinoff or is this quest not going to be a long-runner?
>>
>>30265681
I planned for about 50+ threads. There's still a lot to go here. Though time skips will definitely be more frequent.

I'm just so terrible at nothing happening.
>>
So Law championed someone protecting people. Raev needs someone into girl-girl to bless though.

How do the gods decide on giving out their favor?
>>
>>30265584
So, if we manage to get Michael instilled as the new king, how difficult would it be to go off and do our own thing? I mean, he's nice and all, but we're an arena fighter. We aren't meant to be some pretty face on someone else's arm and we aren't destined to die of old age.
>>
>>30265710
Clown was gonna champion us for funsies.
>>
>>30265584
Oh boy, Q/A time!

If you were a girl, which of the husbandos would you most want to hold you in their arms and make you feel loved and safe?
>>
>>30265716
You don't wanna be a Warrior Queen?

Michael's dad can still see some action.
>>
>>30265716
>We aren't meant to be some pretty face on someone else's arm and we aren't destined to die of old age.

You honestly think that's how it would be?
>>
>>30265716
>>30265761
The King seems like a better fit for for Annelin so far. It's mostly that everyone has some glaring traits that work against them.
>>
>>30265761
Oh I do, but I want a harem for Annelin and I want her to earn it, not inherit it from her hubby. I'd like to think her destiny is bigger than just marrying up.
>>
>>30265816
Pretty much. To bad he's still hung up on his wife.
>>
>>30265841
Harems are meh and if we wanted physical relationships we wouldn't have ended things with Teel.

Also, you can't really top being Queen.
>>
>>30265710
Clown likes people who go to /incredible/ lengths for love. He also blesses those with mental illnesses.

Coyo likes those who are gamblers or tricksters.

Raev likes lesbians, those in lychpin positions, and those who fight overwhelming odds.

Anan likes the industrious, the mercantile.

Law likes humans and those who push for order and organization.

>>30265871
>>30265816
I considered the King having a more central role, but yeah - he's stuck on his wife.

Fairly speaking, she was quite a woman.
>>
>>30265909
>Clown likes people who go to /incredible/ lengths for love.
Really? Didn't consider him to be much of a romantic.
>>
>>30265971
Love can be crazy.
>>
>>30265909
Huh, so Ann x Michael would have Raev's favor for fate/lynchpining and Law's favor for human pairing and since we're a stabilizing force on the kingdom?

Wait, can Law still bless this union while trying to kill us for upsetting his plans? Because if so I think I might like him more.
>>
I don't quite get what magic is supposed to be able to do. We haven't seen much.

>>30265971
Its probably the foolish element.
>>
>>30265902
True, we'd need to be King. Or found England.
>>
>>30266014
Law is a man of, well, law, and regards his portfolio as a set of rules. He will get angry with you for working against him - but at the same time, he is happy to see human relations and would bless a union.
>>
>>30266045
Last question, does he golfclap enemies that screw him over with ingenius use of technicalities? He seems the sort to admire a successful scheme
>>
>>30266099
He respects them by naming admendments of the True Law after them.
>>
>>30266099
God damnit. Now I don't want to kill him anymore.
>>
>>30266119
Does he still attempt to punish them for abusing those loopholes before he amends them?
>>
>>30266229
He cannot. He's bound by his laws, after all.

Essentially, he made his True Law and passed it to humans to help them survive. However, he hasn't amended them properly to account for the times.
>>
>>30266382
Is there anyway to...update him? Like support the liberal faction's interpretation of him over the neophobia orthodoxy? I mean, I like his style I just want him to cut it with the genocidal mania.
>>
>>30265584
Thanks for the session, AG!
