You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After having lunch and talking for a bit, it looks like you're at the final few minutes before the party begins.

>Congratulations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

"How do you know she didn't get bored of me?" you ask. "You know how terribly indifferent she is when it comes to me, after all."
"W... wow, you really -are- stupid..." Marianne says, holding a hand over her mouth as she laughs at your comment.

Whoa, she's not even trying to hide it.

"I just wish that Luciana could have heard what you said... though I suppose this isn't the time for such things," Marianne says, a slight smile on her lips.
"Yeah, considering that the other guests are supposed to show up any minute now," you reply.

"I suppose you'd best enjoy this last bit of reprieve, seeing as how both of us are going to be quite busy for the next few hours," Marianne says.
"Both of us?" you ask.
"I'm sure to be harassed by all sorts who want to try and impress me... and you've managed to arrange several dances before the party has even begun," she says, smirking at you.
"Umm... you don't have to dance with me if you're worried about it taking up too much of your time," Melanie says with a nervous smile.
"Nah, it's fine," you reply.

Not really. Only people she actually sees as humans are probably badasses around granache and some family, and i doubt she has romantic feelings for them. It may or may not mean she has romantic feelings towards rein, it will depend on how we play it till we get to that point i'd assume.

"Oh yeah," you say, snapping your fingers. "I thought you might be happy to know that Luciana's mother is going to be bringing her baby sister to the party soon."
"You mean Chiara?" Marianne replies, a wide smile on her face. "Even though we've been here for a couple of days now, I've yet to actually see her..."
"I suppose that now you have something to look forward to at the party!" Melanie says, patting Marianne on the shoulder.
"Perhaps."

Registering movement from the corner of your eye, you turn away from the smiling Princess, looking in the direction of the side entrance where you were at earlier. And leaving from it is King Celestino... and King Thierri.

"Father!" Marianne shouts as she runs towards him. "I was wondering where you were all this time."
"I've actually been here for a while, but I took a side entrance to avoid all of those jackasses... and I ended up running into Celestino and his artist friend," Thierri replies as he pulls his daughter into a hug.

>"Father!" Marianne shouts as she runs towards him.
Guys, we definitely must tease her about it.
>>
>>28921030
>[2/2]

"Ah... Mr. Reinhold did mention that you were back there," Luciana says, apparently having also rushed over here when she noticed the kings' arrival.
"Speaking of which," Thierri says as he lets Marianne go, "you never mentioned that you were related to a famous artist!" he laughs.
"It never really came up," you reply with a nervous smile. "And, um... good afternoon, Your Majesty," you say with a bow.

"No need to be shy, kid!" Thierri replies, slapping you on the back HARD. "I'm nowhere as particular about formalities as old man Celestino here!"
"Considering some of the nobles that I have to deal with, it's a lot more necessary to keep to protocol here than it is over in Granache," Celestino replies with a chuckle.

Marianne was already happy to hear that the baby's going to be coming to the party, and now it looks like seeing her father has her in an even better mood... but you can hear the murmurs of people talking out in the hallways, which means that this isn't likely to last for much longer.

"I suppose I ought to let them in now," Celestino says, glancing over at the main doorway where a line seems to have formed.
"In that case, I think I'll go ahead and wish Emilio a happy birthday before the crowd gets to him," Thierri replies with a chuckle. "Are you going to be alright, Marianne?"
"Yes, I'll be fine," Marianne nods, her good mood seemingly vanishing in an instant.

As Thierri walks over to the table where Emilio is sitting with Karel and Celestino waves over a guard to let the guests in, you turn to Marianne.

"Just in case..." you say in a hushed voice, touching a hand to your ear.
"Yes, I know," Marianne replies.

As the guests are finally let into the hall, Marianne and Melanie quickly make their way to a wall and act uninterested, most likely in an attempt to avoid drawing the attention of the hundreds of nobles who are pouring into the room all at once.

You initially follow close behind them, though you stop once Sir Gregory nods to signal that he's watching over her as well. Considering that she's clearly not looking forward to this, you don't want to foul her mood any further by hovering over her like you usually do.

After about ten minutes have passed, all of the guests who were waiting outside seem to have made it into the hall, and the music's finally started playing. There's a rather long line over where Emilio's sitting, as many of the guests seem to want to pay the birthday boy his respects and hand over whatever gifts they may have brought before doing anything else.

Checking to see how Marianne's going, it looks like her time's already being monopolized by a few young men...

...and she's put on the stone-cold expressionless look that you're quite familiar with by now. Though she does throw you a quick glance, she doesn't give you the signal... despite her clear annoyance, it seems like she's able to bear with it for now.

Finally turning away from the Princess, you look around the now-crowded hall... and notice that someone's standing right in front of you.

"I have to say, you look rather out of place in a situation like this," Agnes says, a warm smile on her face. "But then again, I can't say that I'm any more comfortable here than you are."

"Yes, well... I -did- promise that I'd do my best to show up, didn't I?" Agnes replies, returning your hug.

While you're rather surprised that Agnes showed up first thing, you're definitely not about to complain.

"So where's Citrine?" Agnes asks as she looks around. "She's not with you?"
"She was with her husband earlier, helping him to set up his painting... I guess she's still with him," you reply, shrugging. "Don't worry, I'm sure that she'll show up eventually."
"As long as she didn't get sick or anything," she replies. "Even if she's busy, I'll be happy as long as I at least get to say hi... though I'd certainly like to meet this husband of hers as well."

"Agnes?" a voice calls out. "Agnes Eschenwald?"
"Hm? Who's that calling for me?" Agnes says, looking around...

...only to find that the source of the voice is none other than King Celestino!

"I haven't seen you in years, I was worried that you'd gotten too old to go outdoors!" Celestino laughs.
"Coming from a man old enough to be -my- grandfather, that's quite the joke," Agnes replies with a smirk. "I am surprised that you actually remembered my face, though... I suppose your mind's still somewhat sharp, even after all this time."
"Not quite as sharp as your sword... I trust that it hasn't grown rusty over the years?"

You just kind of step back, laughing nervously as the two of them trade age-related barbs... but then Celestino's attention turns to you.

"So my old friend Agnes here is an acquaintance of yours, Reinhold?" he asks. "Or were you just helping this old lady to the buffet table?"

After that, I joined the army where I sworded myself up the ranks until I won the tournament and became the princess's bodyguard -- and discovered that in the meantime, my sister from that same brothel had married an artist, who has now become famous throughout the land! It turns out both of us came here, she with her husband and me with the princess's retinue, and while we were here, Luciana mentioned that she had learned of Volker's grave. As we went there to visit it, we came across Agnes Eschenwald, who decided to take us as her grandchildren on the spot, and well, there you go."

"I knew Volker before he passed away, Your Majesty," you say, trying not to say anything that could give the wrong idea. "He's actually the one who taught me how to use the sword."
"Don't be so shy now, Reinhold," Agnes says, placing a hand on your shoulder. "This young man is my Volker's adopted son!"
"...really?" Celestino replies, unable to hide his surprise. "I hadn't heard anything about him adopting any kids before he died..."

"Yes, well..." Agnes sighs, "...Volker was killed before he could bring Reinhold and his sister here to Marconetti," she says in a regretful tone. "But God was kind enough to smile on us and let us all gather here today."
"I see," Celestino replies. "That certainly is a fortuitous turn of events. You've definitely lived an... interesting life, Reinhold."
"I suppose I have," you say with a nervous laugh.

Celestino then turns his head towards a wall, nodding in the general direction of a guard who seems to have been trying to wave him down.

"As much as I'd like to catch up with you, Agnes, that fellow over there has been trying to get my attention for a while now," Celestino says with a sigh. "Try not to wear out poor Reinhold there, I very much doubt that he'd be able to keep up with a vibrant young lady such as yourself."

With a casual wave goodbye, Celestino goes over to see what exactly his guard wants.

"Even if everything in this country changes, old King Celestino seems to be the one constant," Agnes says with a chuckle.

While there's a lot that you'd like to ask Agnes right away, you can see that Marianne's currently surrounded by guys who are trying to talk to her. And while she still hasn't given you the bail-out signal, you'd still like to spare her from the annoyance of having to deal with them for at least a little while.

There's also the secondary bonus of getting to show off the fact that YOU HAVE A GRANDMA NOW, but that's less urgent.

"I told you that I'm working as a bodyguard for Princess Marianne, right?" you ask.
"You certainly did," Agnes replies, smiling warmly.
"Uh... would you like to meet her?"
"That would be wonderful!"

The two of you then make your way through the crowd, with you making sure that nobody runs into your grandmother. Though there were a couple of people who gave you the stink-eye when you tried to move around them, it doesn't take long for you to reach the Princess.

"Princess Marianne!" you call out, waving your hand to get her attention.

Meaning that Reinhold is, for all intents and purposes, a Marconetti noble.

If the king thinks that you are officially the son of a noble, then you are a noble.

Doesn't matter that it's actually a falsity, or that nobody else knows about it.
>>

thats all well and good, but unless you have the papers to prove it your just a bag of hot air.
>>

"...and who would -this- fellow happen to be that he would think that he has the right to monopolize your attention, Your Highness?" one young man asks.
"He happens to be a good friend of mine, and I would appreciate it if you would treat him with respect," Marianne replies, cutting him a cold glare.
"Er- I can assure you, I meant no disrespect..." he says, bowing deeply to the Princess.

But judging from how these guys are staring daggers at you, it's pretty clear that they mean every single kind of disrespect there is.

"Did you need anything?" Marianne asks you, ignoring the others around her.
"Not really," you reply. "I just wanted to introduce you to my grandmother, Agnes Eschenwald."
"Ah, so this is..." Marianne says, her masklike expression melting away to show a genuine smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

Completely intimidated, the group of eight or so young men scatters from around the Princess, regathering a safe distance away.

"...thank you for that," Marianne replies with a sigh of relief. "They're just SO annoying..." she says, placing a hand to her forehead.
"That's the fate of any pretty girl who attends events like this," Agnes replies. "It's why I never cared much for them."
"I feel exactly the same way..."

"It really is nice to meet you though, I've been wondering what kind of person you were all day," Marianne says as she takes Agnes's hand.
"And I've been wondering what kind of person my grandson's employer was for a few days now," Agnes says, laughing. "You're Thierri's daughter, yes?"

Traditionally, inheritance goes to the eldest son by default. This is the case in both Marconetti and Granache. This changes when a will is involved, which is pretty much the way that all nobles do things.

Though relatively uncommon since blood lineage is valued so highly, adoption is a thing that people are used to. In general, all this takes is for the adoptor to formally recognize that the adoptee is to be taken into the family, and then go to a person of authority to get it recognized officially. Most countries don't really require any paperwork in this case, though it's not at all uncommon for it not to be seen as legitimate until the adoptee is entered into the family tree (if it exists).

>>28924129
Question: Is there any specific reason for why Marconetti's court is full of sycophants while Granache's seems to keep them at bay?

Or have we just not seen ours? Might explain part of Marianne's cynicism.

>>28924057
That'd definitely clear it out. Though I'm starting to have Aladdin vibes from this whole situation. Better if nobody starts to suspect us of having views on anything besides turkey legs.

I wonder what a paranoid mind would imagine are Reinhold's intention, considering our behavior. Marrying the Princess to a spy to take over the Kingdom is a bit too farfetched, and Reinhold obviously don't have the ressources to simply be an opportunist wanting a shot at the peaches.

Maybe gaining her trust and then helping to her capture for some nefarious purpose?

Celestino isn't about to just dump Reinhold into his nobility just like that. He'd have to be fucking nuts to agree to this outright.

Agnes probably does have the clout to get it pushed through if she wants, though.

There probably will be politicking over this in the background. A good question to be asking is probably "what does Agnes get out of this".

>>
>>28924175
Celestino's reaction to this says a lot.

I don't think it's Rein he's suspicious over. It's Agnes suddenly gaining heirs.

That might be a problem for him if he was counting on those estates coming back to the crown.

"Umm... thank you," Marianne replies, blushing.
"So how would you rate Reinhold as a bodyguard?" Agnes asks. "I know he won that big tournament down in Granache, but I haven't actually seen him in action."
"He's rather skilled from what I've seen... though he does get kind of jumpy sometimes, I do feel safe when he's around so I suppose that he's doing his job well."

It's certainly nice to hear her say outright that she's confident in your abilties... though you were expecting her to say it in a backhanded way, if at all.

"I see... and how are you handling being around him all day?" Agnes asks. "I know that I didn't much care for being tailed constantly when I was your age," she laughs.
"He makes strange jokes and gets on my nerves sometimes, but I'd rather be stuck with him than someone else," Marianne replies. "Besides, I'm rather used to his... idiosyncrasies."

If we become the legitimate heir to Geanny's holdings you bet your ass we're going to have to deal with all the Marconetti noble bullshit. Granache has less nobles in general than Marconetti, though there are plenty of douchebags to go around.
It's just that most of the story's taken place in the castle, and Gregory and Vincent scare off most of the more aggravating ones.

Also, Thierri's FAR less inclined to even pretend to pay them any mind, as opposed to Celestino who at least humors them.

Yes, I believe the term also applies to blind and total paranoia in any act of collaborative fiction that rests under the auspices of /tg/, especially Table Top RPGs. "My only real complaints about him is that he's aggravatingly cheery a lot of the time and has a habit of poking his nose into my personal business..." Marianne says, sighing.
"Well, nobody's perfect," Agnes says, patting your shoulder. "I'm just glad that my grandson is actually the nice young man that he seems to be at first glance."

"You were suspicious of him?" Marianne asks, raising an eyebrow. "Then again, I also thought that he had ulterior motives at first..."
"You can never be to careful, after all," Agnes says, winking at you. "There're plenty of charlatans out there who'd love to get their hands in a lonely old widow's money, after all..."

"I guess you have a point," you reply, shrugging. Your story does seem rather convenient, to be honest.
"But now all of my doubts have been cleared thanks to the Princess's glowing review of your character," Agnes says, laughing.
"Congratulations," Marianne replies with a smirk.

"And now I shall go and get something to eat, as I haven't had anything since breakfast," Agnes says as she steadies herself on her cane.
"I can go and prepare a plate for you if you want," you reply, kind of worried about the risk of some jackass knocking her over on the way to the food table.
"Oh no, don't worry yourself," Agnes replies. "They had me waiting in line out there for at least an hour, and I'd like to take the opportunity to stretch out my legs some before I get too stiff. After all, you do owe me a dance and I'd hate for my arthritis to act up before I can get it," she says, smiling.

With a nod, Agnes hobbles in the direction of the buffet table. Fortunately, it looks like there isn't much of a line there... yet, anyways. Considering how many people are in here, you're feeling pretty thankful that you were able to eat before everyone else.

>anything to say to Marianne?

On Thanksgiving, I played the third one with my cousin. I was Char in the Sazabi, and he was Frontal in the Sinanju.
Together, we were DOUBLE ZEON.
>>
>>>>28924927
Archelon no longer needs sleep. He's powered purely by gundam fanboyism
>>
>>28924803
Heh another person who knows about it? Didn't think I would ever run into one on /tg/
Played it on a friends PS3 when he first got it, tracked down 1-3 when I got mine. See they are releasing 4 now?

Something about that exchange rubbed me the wrong way. Mumble some cursory pleasantry to the princess and abandon her to her suitors. Let's go talk to other people.

>>
>>28925048
Yep fourth one is meant to be out this month, not sure the US or AU release dates

First I thought had the best story and interaction, second refined the levels more and balanced them a bit better, third had by far the best gameplay but I wasnt a fan of the "only 12 levels with randomised field specials" trick to make it feel bigger

The fourth I am hoping takes after the most recent Dynasty Warriors in the level design and the third DWG in gameplay
>>

All these "sleep plizz we wuv yuu" people get on my nerves. He is running this thing and we are all enjoying it. I am guessing and hoping he enjoys it too since he is running it. Then shut up and be happy about it. It's not like he'll die because he ran a quest for twenty hours. Shut your mouth and enjoy the thread, or get the fuck out and do whatever you want and let us all enjoy it.
