"Hey, babe," you manage, as coolly as possible (which is, objectively, not very cool), and sit down across from Tracy.

"Hey," she responds, smiling broadly. "This is so cool. I've never had a girlfriend before. Ah, I mean, we are, you know, girlfriends, right?"

"Of course," you say, and look around for Ned. "Ned! Over here!" you shout, when you see him. He spots you and hurries over, joining you and Tracy and sitting down next to you.

"Hey, Abby, Tracy," he says. "What's up?"

"I just got confirmation that Abby is my girlfriend!" Tracy says, proud and happy, almost bouncing in her seat.

Ned smiles gently at her, then looks at you. "Damn, why did you get to be the first one to get a girlfriend? Especially a cutie like this one?" Tracy smiles at that, then looks at you, expectantly.

>"My good looks and charm."

"My huge cock," you say, barely keeping a straight face. Ned laughs at that, and Tracy joins in a fraction of a second later.

"Ah, see, there's my problem," Ned says, "mine is much smaller than yours."

"Size isn't everything," you say, getting another chortle.

"That's what all the girls say, but I just don't believe them."

"So, what's up with you, Ned?" Tracy asks Ned.

"Ah, we had this great sermon at the Church last night."

"Oh? But... it's a Thursday."

"The Church has services every night. It helps you get involved. Make friends, meet people, you know." He looks at both you and Tracy. "I mean, you don't have to go except when you want to, but it helps."

"Which church is this?" Tracy asks.

"The Church of the Triune Goddess," you answer quickly. Ned and his dad converted after his mom died about a year ago. It helped him out of his depression but, on the other hand, it's a cult started by a (former) used car salesman. It's a little bit infamous in this city.

"Ah," Tracy says, and falls into awkward silence.

"If you're ever curious, you can ask me. I pay a lot of attention to the, y'know, doctrine and such. And it's a very welcoming place." Ned has enough tact to leave it at that.

>"So, Ned, anything interesting happen in your life that DOESN'T relate to the Church?"

"So, Ned, anything interesting happen in your life that DOESN'T relate to the Church?"

"I don't think I mentioned it to you, but my dad went on a date last Saturday. First one since Mom died." He pauses. "I guess that relates to the Church, though, since that's where they met and she's a Triunist too."

"In order: that's great news, and you know what I meant, Ned," you say.

He smiles. "Yeah, I do. Just giving you a hard time," he says before falling silent and focusing in on his food.

"Um," Tracy starts, looking at Ned, "so, what is the..." Oh no. She's about to ask about the Church, you can tell.

Heh, there is no conceivable chance that this will end in some monotonous lecture.

Whatever. Best to let her learn her lesson now. "...Church like? What do you guys believe?"

That sets him off. "Well, in the Church we believe in a single creator deity, the Triune Goddess. Her three forms are Creator, Preserver and Destroyer. There's no relation to that neo-pagan Maiden/Mother/Crone nonsense. We believe in something that's kind of like traditional reincarnation and kind of isn't. In order to understand it, I have to first talk about what we believe regarding the soul."

Ned continues on in that vein like the enormous nerd that he is. You sink in your chair, knowing this will consume the rest of lunch, and that Tracy won't have the heart to stop him. All your predictions come true, and the bell rings before he wraps up discussing the finer points of the Church's doctrine of the soul.

"Ah, damn," he says, "sorry for taking so much time. Gotta get to class." He stretches and is the first to leave.

"Wow," Tracy says.

"That's Ned's schtick. Don't poke it," you say, picking up your own backpack and departing for class.

English is dull and uninteresting, a discussion of a book you already read on your own (Brave New World), except this time with all the emotional resonance sucked out.

You smoothly write down the answer to each question in rapid sequence. Each problem almost rolls off your fingertips. A few seconds here and there for consideration, but that's all; you never seem to make a misstep in any problem, head down the wrong direction or forget a formula.

As you near the halfway point, you see Richard get up to turn his in. Fucking Richard. A part of you seethes; he used to be smart, sure, but you competed. Then about a year ago, all of the sudden he wasn't competing anymore. He was just winning. He's probably cheating or on some performance-enhancing drug.

A quick double-checking of your math - it seems correct - and you're done, heading up to turn in your own test. You shoot Richard a killing glare before you sit back down in your seat. He's doodling, not even ignoring you on purpose, just doodling.

You sit, idly, daydreaming about killing Richard and thinking about the day until the teacher declares the test period over. About half the other students have turned in their papers by that point; the other half moan and whine, as they always do.

Science class is boring but serviceable, a lecture on atoms and molecules.

And that's it, the day's over, classes are done.

You manage to find Tracy in the halls. "Hey, you want to do something this evening?" You ask, walking beside her.

"Oh, no, I have to get home. Jim is an itty bit overprotective and he'd get worried if I didn't show up on time."

"You know, when I think of your brother, the first word I think of is definitely 'worried'." This is a joke, created by an absurd juxtaposition. Jim is Tracy's legal guardian, and you have good reason to believe that he is a gang member. The actual word that first comes to mind when thinking of Jim is 'scary.'

Tracy laughs at that. "Well, it's still true. We can't go out later either. I mean, he's going to be going out with some of his boys, but I don't know when he'll be back, and I'd need to be home by then, and, you know," she says, fiddling with the hem of her shirt awkwardly. "Sorry."

"It's fine, not your fault," you respond as you arrive at the school's main doors. It's raining fairly heavily outside. Fortunately, you keep a small umbrella in your backpack, so no worries on that front.

Tracy gets out her own umbrella. "See you later... sweetheart." She smiles and gives you a quick peck on the cheek before heading out into the rain, alone. She turns around and gives you a little wave. One of the ones that involves moving your fingers independently. You return the gesture (awkwardly), and she turns back around, headed home.

>>
You stretch out the umbrella and cover yourself, heading home in the rain at a good clip. Once there, you fumble with the keys for a second before opening the front door and stepping inside, leaving the umbrella outside the door to drain onto the concrete.

Your mom calls out to you from her room, and you walk over to it. She hasn't left the house since your dad died, and ever since Brian got his own place, it's been your responsibility to look after her.

"What is it, Mom?" You ask through the door. You hardly ever see your mom these days; she always talks through the door or leaves notes, preferring to hide in her room when people are around.

"Go pick up groceries. We're almost out. There's money and a list on the table in the entryway."

You glance back and, sure enough, it's there.

"Mom, come on, I won't be here that much longer. You need to start working on getting out of your shell," you say through the door.

There's a long moment of silence. "Mom?" You ask, worried.

"I'm here. Look," you hear a sigh from inside. "Just do it, okay?"

"Mom," you whine. "This is ridiculous. I'm seventeen years old, and you're my mother! I can't keep taking care of you for the rest of my life! Just go get the groceries yourself!"

"Normal kids do what their parents tell them."

"Normal kids have parents who look them in the eyes."

You can hear your mother sigh again. "I'll think about it, okay?"

That's probably the best you're going to get. "Fine, whatever, your life to ruin," you mutter. You collect the money and the list and head back out the door.

You get to the grocery store and run through the list, point by point. Bread, milk, peanut butter, cheese, and a whole host of other things. You pay with your mother's money and start to head home, umbrella in your right hand, bags arrayed on your arms and in your left hand. The bags are heavy and uncomfortable, digging into your palm and forearm even as you shift to try to reduce the sensation.

>(1/3)
>>
As you make your way home, a group of young men walk towards you. You don't pay them any mind until one of them slams his fist into your chest, knocking you down. The bags and your umbrella lie, mostly discarded, around you. You gasp, desperately sucking in air in spite of the pain in your chest. Immediately, the others join in on the assault, kicking your supine form. You pull your arms and legs in, protecting yourself as best you can by adopting the fetal position.

The flashes of pain from their kicks keep you in the world, but there's a strange disconnect in your mind as you wonder, idly, if you're going to die. Then you wonder why they're attacking you.

"What a little fucking bitch," one of them says with a laugh.

"You stupid dyke," one of them adds. "Going after Jim's sister? Dumb fucking move."

Ah. That explains it.

The kicking and taunting continues for a while longer before you feel something. It's strange, like a mix between your heart sinking in your chest and being grabbed from the inside. You cough, and what comes out isn't air, but black smoke.

What happens next is what really surprises you, though.

Pick one (superpower selection - you also become very physically fit as a side benefit):
>"Shrapnel" telekinesis. Very limited lifting capacity (~50g), but can pick up a whole bunch of different things and throw them at high velocities. Good range (10-20m). Limited tactile ESP within range.

>Flight. High max speed (~30 m/s), extremely high maneuverability (zero to max in 1s, max to stop in .1s, can move in any direction).

>Teleportation. Short range (1-3m). Line of sight unnecessary, can re-orient and re-position via teleport, has built-in safeties.

>Biology manipulation. Heal, buff (e.g. adrenaline, endorphins), debuff (e.g. adenosine, induce vomiting). Touch range. More powerful effects with contact for several minutes (analgesia, quadriplegia).

>Physique. Extreme durability, extreme strength, enhanced movement speed. Take low-caliber bullets, throw cars, run 10 m/s, jump 20m.

>Summoning. Create loyal, stupid homonculi (3-8kg) from your body, with some ability customization. Can keep large numbers of homonculi simultaneously.

>Body control. Initially can be used to cause erratic jerking, prolonged use on a target gives near-total bodily control so long as they're in range. Medium range (3-5m). Limited ESP in range.

>Information gathering and application. Eidetic memory, rapid analysis of data, extreme perceptiveness.

You open your eyes. There's a strange clarity to the world you've never noticed before, like looking at a pattern and noticing the shape it outlines. Once you see it, you can't un-see it. A thousand data points that easily click into your brain, fitting into a holistic view of the world.

Following a few seconds later is a plan of attack, a strategy moving you towards victory. You reach out and grab one of their legs, yanking its owner to the side and knocking him and his neighbor over. Your leg kicks out to another's knee, and he collapses to the ground.

You move to stand, a rapid, sudden movement, eerily easy, and stand face to face with the only one of them still on his feet as the others recover. Before he can react, you deliver a blow to his solar plexus, sending him to the ground, groaning in pain.

The one whose knee you kicked is standing now, and you grab the side of his face with one hand, pushing your thumb into his eye. He screams in pain.

"Shoving the eye with one's thumb causes extreme pain at the first stage," you hear yourself say coldly, "continued pressure causes temporary blindness; then permanent blindness; then brain damage; then death. The rest of you, unless you want your friend dead, get the fuck out of here."

They comply, readily.

You gather your bags, and they feel lighter in your hands. You easily carry them in one hand, your other holding your umbrella as you walk home. Once home, you put away the groceries, placing each one where it belongs. The task is strangely calming; soothing, even. You head into the bathroom, planning to just brush your teeth.

You do a double-take when you see yourself in the mirror, a little surprised at your reflection. You look different. You were gangly; now you're wiry and tall, defined muscles having appeared on your arms. Your acne is gone, the blackheads on your nose too. A quick flip of your shirt reveals abs instead of an embarrassing (slightly) plump stomach. The greasiness that normally accompanies your hair drying is gone. A sudden thought occurs to you, and you lift up your right pant leg, checking for an old scar. It's gone. Your legs are muscled too.

The tiny imperfections you always noticed are gone. The calluses on your wrists, the weird bump on the back of your foot from where your insole dug into your heel, the slight asymmetry of your upper lip. The things you knew nobody else would probably ever notice or care about, but were still bothered by. It's not that you look like someone else, more that you look like a better version of yourself.

You are more tired than you'd normally be, especially now that the adrenaline has worn off but it's 5:21 PM; maybe a little early to be sleeping.

You decide to get your homework done, slipping it out of your backpack. You do a double-take, uncertain for a moment. The math problems look trivial. Are they from last semester or something? A check of the date confirms they're the current assignments. Then you realize they're about as hard as normal; it's just you're so much better.

It takes sixteen minutes to finish your homework; it would've taken an hour normally. It is now 5:37 PM, and you go to your mother's room, knocking on the door. You hear a gasp of surprise from inside.

"What is it?" There's a tremor of worry in her voice.

"I'm going to sleep, Mom," you say, "I love you. Sorry about getting mad earlier."

"Oh. Okay. Love you too."

You head to your bed, fall down, and pass out almost instantly.

Something greets you in your dreams.

It has long towering central organ, covered in a wide variety of eyes, with dozens of long, slender tentacles stretching out from it. Instead of skin, there's a grayscale pattern, which looks like noise, but you know isn't. You can read bits and pieces, where the angle is right; dates, temperatures, places, events, names, people, rules, all written in hexadecimal format and plastered across its body.

<Hello, Abigail Spencer Jackson,> it says, it's voice rapid-fire and breathless, like an auctioneer. There's no mouth you can see, yet it speaks.

>"You seem to have me at a disadvantage, Mr...?"

<As I said, I don't know my parents. You are here. Like a babe abandoned on the doorstep of a church, it is up to the nun to name it.>

"What are you?"

It almost hums for a moment, more like a hung computer than a person. <Interesting question. I don't know the name of my kind. I'm a symbiote, I suppose. You provide me a place to live, and in return I provide you certain benefits.>

"Why me?"

<I don't know. You were in need, I came at that moment, and that is unlikely to be a coincidence. Beyond that, I know nothing.>

"Do I need to do anything in particular?"

<Just continue living.>

"Are there any rules to our cooperation or price for it?"

<We are not quite... cooperating, as you put it. It is more like my existence intersects with your own, changing both for the better. There is no price.>

"Are you going to rape me with those tentacles?"

<Nothing so crass as that, I assure you.>

"Are there others like me?"

I've got the loose write-ups, and you'll probably never see them (unless I run this quest a second time or something), so...

Telekinesis: A sentient wind, tangible only by the effect it has on what surrounds it.

Flight: A scaleless snake, sans eyes, with a hawklike beak that floats and moves through the air at its leisure.

Teleportation: A constantly moving point of light, flickering in and out of existence.

Physique: An armored, spiked ball; a pillbug mixed with a glyptodon and a stegosaurus, sans legs.

Biology Manipulation: A cell.

Summoning: A gestating womb.

Body Control: A hive entity. A collection of tiny worms.

"What? Kill them? Why?"

<They are dangerous to you and me both. They would probably try to kill you. I am probably not atypical for my kind, which means they have likely been told the same thing.>

"Isn't that circular logic?"

<Is it? I don't think so. Object A is a typical example of class A. Object B is also in class A. Object A does X; therefore probably object B will do X. That sounds a reasonable deduction.>

"But if you just say something different..."

<Suppose there is a type of gum which people with a particular disease are more likely to consume. If you choose not to eat the gum, that does not actually make it less likely that you have the disease, since the causality is the other way around.>

"I'm not quite sure I buy that," you say, your lips a thin line. "You're not going to kill me when you finish growing, are you?"

<No. What gave you that idea?>

"Is there anything else I should know?"

<Knowledge is always useful. Perhaps there is some just beyond your reach that you require. But I don't have anything more to tell you.>

You move to your computer, curious to find any evidence of others with abilities like your own. A worry crosses your mind, and you download a program to disguise your IP address.

Just in case.

Unfortunately, even as you work through multiple tabs simultaneously, taking in ten times the information you normally would have, there is far too much noise to find any useful signal.

You glance through the local news, which also doesn't seem to contain any useful information.

Then you go read up on human anatomy. First you go through Wikipedia, then you start churning through Google Scholar. You find an old medical text on a torrent site and set that to download. You head to Internet Archive and read some there. You're reading at an incredible pace, and retaining all of it.

After a couple hours, you get up, stretching your legs. It's 5:54. You head out for a run, legs pounding against the pavement. You feel fantastic, not even tired. You arrive home precisely when you hit the thirty minute mark.

It's 6:25. You head into the shower to get rid of the sweat, enjoying the warm water washing over your skin - your pristine, blemishless skin.

It's 6:43 when you get out of the shower. It's 6:59 when you're completely dressed and gussied up.

Two hours until school and not much to do. You're a little mentally exhausted from all the research.

What now?

You put together a delightful little breakfast, even making a second serving for your mom. Peanut butter on toast. Simple and easy to make, yet delicious.

You are about to knock on your mom's door, but then think better of it; you place your ear against the door, listening for the sound of your mother's breath. She sounds awake. "Mom?"

"Yes?"

"I made you some breakfast."

"Leave it at the door. I'll get to it in a bit."

You gently place the plate in front of the door, a little put off by your mother's behavior. She almost certainly just doesn't want to deal with you. Whatever.

You eat your toast, the hard crunch of toasted bread and warm, soft peanut butter playing against each other wonderfully in your mouth. Somehow you appreciate the taste more, like there's more in there.

It's 7:26. School is in approximately one and a half hours.

What now?

Going a little around the bend.

You start powering through your textbooks, managing to make your way through everything for Science, everything for Math, everything for History, and about half of everything remaining in English, before you have to leave. You're fairly certain that you will never be taught large chunks of these books, in this year or any other, but such is life and the American education system.

In any case, it's time for school.

You look forward to seeing Richard in your first shared class, History, so you can finally show him up. Unfortunately, you first have to power through U.S. Government, where you get the most truly bizarre and fact-agnostic perspective on how the U.S. government works.

You get to History before Richard, and see him as he comes through the door. He looks at you an unusually long time, as though analyzing you, and you meet his gaze. Your eyes widen for just a fraction of a second.

He knows what you are.

The voice of the octopus-spirit-thing in your head starts to talk. But you already know what it's going to say.

It's obvious now. That's why his scores suddenly got better.

It says it anyway:

<He's like you.>

THREAD END.

>>28309770
Thanks for the run.

No problem. Thought this'd get through more of the stuff I prepared than it did. That's good, though; means I have less to prepare for next time.

Was glad to see there was some dissent on powers, but a little sad that people tended towards the boring ones. Let's see, I could be Jean Gray, Der Flieger, Nightcrawler, Panacea, Nilbog, or Regent. Or, I could be Golden Age Superman, or maybe Batman. I want one of those. How about Batman? I wanna be Batman. I'm Batman.

Ah well.

Any comments on what to improve for next time?

I don't like lesbians.

I don't like lesbians in a sexy way, so if that's your problem, don't worry.

You have the following pieces of information available to you:
1. You are probably not the first person with superpowers.
2. You are the first such person you've ever heard of.

Reasonable explanation: there is some force that's preventing information regarding such persons from getting out.

Probable extrapolation: this force is active - an individual, group, or organization, not a natural force.

Worth-considering extrapolation: this force is likely looking for people looking for information. After all, if I observe a person flying, I might google "flying person." Data regarding people googling "flying person" is useful. It also would lead them right to you. This might be a threat.

I guess I should've explained the thought process. No edit button on 4chan, though.

>>28310360
>Cuts out the inevitable waifu wars if we stick with Tracy, too.
That would be the point, yes.
>>
>>28310580
Now that seems even more needlessly paranoid to suddenly think that it's a global conspiracy to cover up and hide/study these special individuals.

I mean, it's not like Abby is a frequent /x/ goer or obscure news goer, so it'd be pretty safe to assume that superpowers don't happen very often on account of, you know, not seeing it anywhere.

And if it really IS common enough to warrant a global conspiracy to end all mutant knowledge, then you'd think Abby would have pieced together that there are super-individuals in random places sooner, and that it'd be pretty widely known.

I mean, when you realize the resources and the manpower, let alone the sheer amount of inquisitorial leak-stoppers you'd need, a controlling force like that doesn't seem as likely from Abby's position.

Looking at it from the outside in, being a quest thread, yeah that makes perfect sense, but realistically it feels like Call of Cthulhu-esque "lol railroading to insanity" checks.
>>
>>28310740
though aside from that everything looks pretty cool n' dandy, OP
>>
>>28310740
>I mean, when you realize the resources and the manpower, let alone the sheer amount of inquisitorial leak-stoppers you'd need, a controlling force like that doesn't seem as likely from Abby's position.
It doesn't have to be probable to be worth taking precautions against.

How long does it take to download and install Tor? Two minutes? Let's say four minutes.

How many losses can you sustain from a mistake? Well, Abby's seventeen, and she's female, so she has a life expectancy of about 68.5 years (according to the SSA). That's about 36 million minutes. Are the odds, in a completely reasonable universe, with no meta knowledge, greater than 1 in 9 million that there is some lethal force hunting down mutants? I'd say substantially more. Thus, her life expectancy raises from doing this. Simple problem, well solved.

The worth-considering extrapolation does not need to be probable, it merely needs to be worth considering.

The threat does not need to be global because the phenomenon doesn't need to be. The threat does not need to be solely responsible, either.
>>
>>28311034
Yes, but this "just in case" attitude is still railroaded paranoia. Soon we'll be looking over our shoulder, "just in case", because you know, even though it's not probable, it's worth consideration.

And then we'll be reaming our mother for why she's hiding in her room all the time, because, you know, /just in case/. Doesn't have to be probable, only worth considering.
>>
>>28311097
>Yes, but this "just in case" attitude is still railroaded paranoia.
It's actually railroaded "me not having to come up with an explanation for why certain characters aren't acting intelligently with the resources at their disposal." That's all.

Reaming your mother out takes more than two minutes, and could increase your odds of being the victim of homicide. It's unreasonable to expect Tor to do that.
>>
>>28311195
Alright, just seemed with the previous mentioning of having a paranoia disorder, combined with that, this was going to turn into very Call of Cthulhu levels of "lol fuck you questers I send you down the insane path because lol why not"

Thanks for alleviating my concerns.
