You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Well, the party to celebrate Sylvie's win went over pretty well! Nicolette and Melanie stuck around, and you even got to her some stories from when they were all little kids!

And to top it off, you managed not to make anyone mad!

But now the time for tea and pastries has come to an end, and everyone's preparing to return to their usual routines.
>Guard Rank: CAT
>Congratulations, you are now an annoying CAT!
>Not one of those fancy pedigree cats, but rather a mangy stray.
>The Princess now kind of likes you a little!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

>"...you know, you don't have to call me by my title..." she mumbles.
>"Hm?" Sylvie replies. "Did you say something?"
>"What I mean is..." she sighs, "...we're still friends, right?"
>"Eh- O- Of course!" Sylvie stammers.
>"Then it's okay for you to call me by my name."

>Princess Marianne then turns to you.

>"...I suppose you count as my friend as well, so the same goes for you if you want," she says, blushing.

Well, that was unexpected.

Unexpected, but not at all unpleasant.

"Sounds good, Marie!" you reply, smiling.

Both the Princess and Sylvie stare at you while Melanie giggles, unable to hide how much this scene amuses her.

"...don't get carried away," Marianne says to you, sighing.
"Haha, looks like things are getting good... too bad I can't stick around to watch," Nicolette says, waving as she heads out the door. "Seeya!"
"Umm... ummm... I guess I should head out too," Sylvie says. "Bye, Marianne! Reinhold, I'll see you at dinner!"

Sylvie quickly exits, munching on the last of the cupcakes.

"I suppose that just leaves us..." Marianne says a she turns to you and Melanie.
"I'll clean up here, so you two can go on ahead," Melanie says as she gathers the plates together.

"Thanks for helping out, Melanie," you say.
"Well, it is my job..." Melanie giggles. "And thank -you- for asking me to stay."
"Well, I couldn't have gotten this done without you so it was only fair."

Marianne then turns to the two of you.

"I'd like to thank both of you again," she says. "This entire thing was unepected, but in a good way... it was really thoughtful of you."
"Well, I'm glad you liked it!" Melanie says, a warm smile on her face.
"Same here," you say.

"We should get going now..." Marianne says, sighing. "While I would honestly -like- to be late, it wouldn't be fair to Pauline."
"Oh... oh yeah," you say as the previous day's events flash through your mind.
"As long as you can avoid losing your balance, we should be fine... goodbye, Melanie."
"Yeah, see you around," you say.
"Take care!" Melanie says, waving to the two of you.

You then leave the courtyard, following the Princess through the hallways and stairWells until you finally make it to THAT ROOM.

"Good afternoon, Pauline..." Marianne says as she enters the room.
"Yeah, hey," you say, following behind her.
"And good afternoon to the two of you," Pauline says, smiling. "What happened yesterday was a real shame, but let's try and put it behind us, okay?
"Yes... let's," Marianne says.

Pauline the leadds the two of you to the middle of the room.

"And now for today's lesson..." Pauline says.

"Oh... I was actually going to go through the forms with both of you individually to make sure that you got them right," Pauline says, looking slightly worried, "But if the two are up to it, this should be fine as well."
"Yes, it's fine this way," Marianne says, sighing. "There's nothing to be gained from putting it off, anyways."
"If you're absolutely sure..."

Pauline then goes to work making sure that the two of you are in the proper positions, moving your arms and legs just so and pushing the two of you closer than you'd prefer.

"Just start it out slowly and carefully," Pauline says. "You can worry about speeding up later."

Your blood chills as you carefully, CAREFULLY go through the steps that Pauline showed you, taking extra care to avoid stepping on Marianne's feet or accidentally getting a handful of... peaches. Marianne herself seems to be every bit as cautious as you are, doing her best to make sure that her feet don't end up underneath yours.

STEP

STEP

TURN

STEP

You are careful. And slow. But your moves are close to perfection, and Marianne is just as relieved that you haven't done something stupid.

"Oh my, you seem to have finally gotten it, Reinhold!" Pauline says happily.

The two of you keep at it for a little while longer as Pauline gradually encourages you to go faster until you find yourselves back at normal speed.

"There you go!" Pauline says, occasionally repositioning one of your arms or pushing you closer. "Prince Emilio is sure to be impressed by your dancing skills, Princess! And Reinhold, you're sure to be a big hit with the ladies of Marconetti..."

As you continue to dance, you notice that Marianne is rolling her eyes.

"I have no interest in impressing -him-, Pauline... I'm only going in order to spend time with Luciana," Marianne says.
"If you say so..." Pauline giggles.

You continue dancing until Pauline decides that she's satisfied with your performance, and then she signals that it's okay for the two of you to finally separate.

As your heart finally switches from PANICMODE, Pauline approaches the two of you.

"You did wonderfully today," Pauline says. "After yesterday, I was worried that you'd try and avoid coming back but I suppose that was unfounded..."
"He is my bodyguard, so he doesn't really have any more of a choice than I do," Marianne says, sighing.
"Oh, you!" Pauline laughs.

Waving goodbye, the two of you leave Pauline and head straight for Marianne's next class, etiquette. As you enter the classroom, you notice that the old butler who teaches it has yet to arrive... did Pauline let you out early?

Deciding to accept good fortune where it comes, you take a seat behind the Princess and wait for him to arrive.

You pull out the book that Marianne lent you and open it to where you left off, but then you remember what class this is and that it would most definitely be rude if you were to lose track of time again and end up reading until it was time to leave.

"Hm?" the Princess turns to you, noticing that you brought out the book. "You don't need to read it all at once, I don't mind if you hold onto it for however long you need to finish."
"Oh, thanks," you reply. "Umm... do you read a lot of this kind of thing?"
"You mean books about the Old Kings? Yes, that author wrote books about several of the non-dragon ones. The first king of Vespolina... Sivarios... the Endless Shadow... but most of them have sad endings on account of the Fall."
"Yeah, getting turned into swords and all..." you reply, remembering what Arnaud told you about the Sealed Kings. "Um, these are all based on actual events, right?"

"Yes, though the author embellished in places for dramatic effect," Marianne replies. "But I always find his books interesting, so the slight historical inaccuracies don't bother me very much."
"As long as it's interesting, huh," you say.
"Yes, pretty much," she replies, smirking. "But if you want, I can lend you the others after you finish this one. I have most of the series."

Before you can continue your conversation, the ancient butler arrives, apologizing for his tardiness. Boring as ever, he goes on a long lecture about table manners, this time covering the proper manner to inform someone that they have food caught in their teeth, how to use a napkin at the dinner table, and countless other things that you were unable to process now matter how hard you tried to force yourself to pay attention.

After the lecture THANKFULLY comes to an end, you and the Princess quickly leave, heading to her room to see her off for the night.

"About the Sealed Kings," you say to the Princess as you walk, "has anyone confirmed their existence?"
"Of course," Marianne replies. "The rulers of several countries have them, and I believe Anrasorana has been held by the same person ever since the Fall."
"...huh, so it's not just a myth after all."

"So, uh... are you looking forward to the party in Marconetti?" you ask.
"I'm looking forward to seeing -Luciana,- Marianne replies as she starts up the stairs. "I dislike crowds, and I dislike formal occasions, and I especially dislike the vast majority of Marconetti's nobility."
"Yeah, I remember Sir Gregory going on about them..."
"As much as I am loath to admit it, we do share a lot of the same likes and dislikes."

Before you can crack a joke about that, you find yourselves in front of the door to the Princess's room.

"...I suppose I should thank you again," Marianne says, turning to you. "The cakes were delicious, and it was nice to be able to spend time with Nicolette and Sylvie again after so long."
"Just trying to help," you reply.
"I bet you are... anyways, goodnight."

With that, Marianne quickly hurries inside her room and shuts the door before you can say anything else.

At least she seems self-conscious over her own behavior considering how often she puts herself down and says that everyone hates her. Not much of an excuse for acting like that but I think there's a real desire to change and stop being like that now after alienating herself and especially after freaking out on us back at dance class.

I'm hoping that's something we can work on in the timeskip.

>"Didn't even see what's wrong with constantly bitching to me every single day for nearly a month about how awful my own father is as if that wouldn't bug me at all... how the fuck would she react if I started going on about Thierri?" Nicolette mumbles.

We should ask Nico if she actually, you know, TALKED about that with Marie? I mean, the princess might not have even realized what she was doing and Nico didn't tell her that she was bothered by it and that's why she continued to do it.
When the princess made a jab at our poor upbringing and parents, we told her that we don't appreciate it and she apologized and never did it again.

I feel like the blame doesn't fully sit with Marianne.
>>
>>27947307
That's just who Nico is. A person who keeps secrets no matter how pointless keeping them is.

Unable to resist the delicious smell of the pasta that sits before you, you stab into the ravioli with your fork and begin to CONSUME. Pasta, meat, cheese and tomato sauce... as you lose yourself in the flavor, you find yourself once again really appreciating life here at the castle.

As usual, you end up finishing last, swallowing your last bite as Nicolette and Sylvie are nearing the end of some random conversation.

"Well, that was good..." Nicolette says, standing up once she sees you finish eating. "...but I have stuff to do so I can't hang out tonight."
"You're always so busy..." Sylvie says, pouting. "Is being a captain really that time-consuming?"
"It's not captain stuff, it's personal stuff. Don't worry about it," Nicolette says as she heads for the door. "Anyways, I'll see you two later."
"Bye, Nicolette!" Sylvie says.
"See you around," you say.

In any case. we better be capable of comprehending them when Arnaud teaches us. So far we've only learned two begineer's cantrips.
>>
>>27947722
I think actually being able to cast while fighting is a much more important skill to learn over new spells. I think as long as we keep up with both Sylvie and Arnaud's lessons and experiment a bit on our own with the Earth book and maybe some tips from Niklaus we'll be have a good base to work with after time-skip.

>>27947774
so far we're a magikarp spell wise. we need a few usable spells
>>
>>27947774

Reinhold's current spell list is nigh useless. Create light or water.

Now if we had some spells worth using like a Shield or Attack, then yes it would be good. Right now though, we need better spells.
>>
>>27947327

ALSO,

I'd like to add that it seems that Nico and Sylvie stopped hanging out with Marie a bit after that man tried to molest/rape her. Of course the princess would have some shitty mood and trust issues for a long time after that, instead of helping her deal with it, it seems that they got fed up with her and started to avoid her.
If I'm right, that's a really cruel and shitty thing to do.

Another thing that I think is also caused them to drift apart might be that Nico and Sylvie didn't really treat her as a friend but more as a heir to the throne, at the same time Marie thought they were best friends and acting like friends do (she might not even know exactly how friends behave). Ie, they never were fully themselves around her and never told her what they think, instead they might have tried to be formal to avoid insulting her.
But that's just my guess, I don't really have anything to point to this.
>>
"Guess I'll head out too..." you say.
"Hm?" Sylvie turns to you. "You didn't want any magic lessons tonight?"
"I do, but Marianne lent me a book last night and I kind of want to finish it.
"Oh," she replies with a disappointed tone. "Well, I'll be happy to give you more magic lessons whenever you have the time... umm, what book did she lend you?"
"The Legend of Alsoradna."

upon hearing that title, Sylvie's eyes widen with surprise.

"Oh, you're reading that one!?" Sylvie says excitedly. "My father loves that series, though he always gets depressed near the end..."
"...really?" you reply, a bit surprised.
"Yeah... the part near the end when-"
"DON'T SPOIL IT" you shout without thinking.
"Oh- ehehe, sorry!" Sylvie giggles. "Well, my favorite character in that was Anra, he was really cool!"
"Yeah, I got to the part in the beginning where he kills a bunch of dragons."
"Well, he does even crazier stuff than that later on... but I don't want to hold you up so I guess I'll be seeing you tomorrow1 Bye!"
"See you later, Sylvie."

Sylvie then hurries out of the kitchen, waving goodbye. With no further reason to stick around in the kitchen, you head out as well, quickly removing Marianne's book from your breast pocket and throwing your jacket on a chair once you make it into your room. You then take a seat and get back to reading.

From where you left off...

...Anrasorana incinerated four of the seen so-called Dragons in an instant, his rage at having been injured was so great. Shocked upon seeing such power, the Dragons finally shed their human forms and turned into massive scaled, winged beasts similar in shape to the ones that Anrasorana had been defending the humans from.

But these Dragons were different- they had horns, something which no other creature posessed. Boasting about how these horns were their sign of true greatness, the Dragons then attacked Anrasorana together, causing great destruction. While Anrasorana fought the Dragons, Alsiradna did his best to protect the humans, frntically trying to remove them from the area in which his brother was doing battle.

Seeing what he was doing, one of the Dragons fired a stray shot into the crowd of humans out of spite, killing a great number of them. Enraged, Alsiradna took his true form as well and helped his brother slay the remaining attackers. Awed by his feats, the surviving humans gave Alsirdna the title "Scarlet Blaze."

>>27948071

This was the first time that dragons had ever come across someone outside their kind who could stand up against them. Aiming to get revenge, several more of them arrived in the brothers' territory, but all were defeated. EVentually, an agreement was struck, in that the dragons would leave the humans in Anrasorana and Alsiradna's care alone in return for the brothers' noninterference in the dragons' affairs.

Satisfied with this, Alsiradna and Anrasorana continued to protect the humans within their territory, quelling violent disputes and defeating whatever manner of monster arose to put them in danger. Thousands of years passed, and the humans' crude villages gradually became proper towns, then cities. The two brothers of flame also grew in power over time, eventually being worshipped as gods by the humans that they protected.

However, both Alsiradna and Anrasorana had no interest in gathering the faith of humans or ruling over them, as such things have little meaning to those who existed before such concepts even existed. Alsiradna carried on as he always had... but Anrasorana began to grow curious about how the world outside their territory had progresed. Though he tried to convince his brother to join him, Alsiradna refused to leave the humans under his care and so the brothers truly separated for the first time.

Good run Arch, G'night.

People, i'll not be around for the next thread start, someone remember to suggest to send a letter to Citrine to arrange a meeting with her and her husband after we come back from the ball. She was really kind to us during childhood and we were too busy and distracted to even have a decent chat when we ran into her during town-trip.
>>
>>27948266

I see, can't be helped then.

General things to work on:
1) Mana Training
2) Physical Training (General Workout/sparring)
3) Sketching

Specific Things to improve/obtain:
1) One Attack Spell
2) One Defence Spell
3) Sketch the map into memory. Then burn it.
4) Combat Casting
5) Further Reading
6) Sword Training under Aurnard

Just throwing up a possible list of things we need to do during the timeskip.
>>
>>27948349
Gonna copy this for posting in the next thread since it's a pretty decent list. Though we're still not sure how Archelon intends to handle the time skip so it might need changing.
>>
>>27948373

Oh, most definitely.

I don't expect to be able to complete all of it though so I was hoping to debate with my fellow questers on priority.

Like I would suggest that a Defence Spell have a greater priority than Attack Spell if we don't have sufficient 'slots', due our focus on defending Marie.
>>
>>27948173

What about The Soulmender?
Or The Heartstitcher?
Or The Gaymaker? (in the non-sexual meaning of the word obviously)
Or The Teddyguard?
Maybe The Loveblade?
Or perhaps Angerslayer?
The Unscarrer?
The Wrathender?
The Swordwall?
Or we could go with the Brothelboy
>>
>>27948405
I agree with that. Swording is our main offensive strength so we can stick to that in the meantime.

Personally, I think memorizing the map is a no brainer, something that just should be done naturally and we don't have to specifically go out of the way to specify doing but that's up to archelon to decide. If it is something to specify than we definitely should; I don't want to hold that thing longer than we have to.

Where is the "Reinhold has a huge chin" even coming from? I'm pretty sure it hasn't been mentioned by the OP and then it went just silly with the fan art. I mean, it's fine to have fun, but it's not like it was, eh, canon or something.

He is doing it unconsciously, it's carved into his body and his mind that a servant should be invisible until he is wanted. It's not something he can teach, he is not even aware of it. ( Thats as far as we know, he could just be feigning ignorance though.)

So, I've been wondering this for a while but why can't Marianne go on an adventure like her parents and practically all the older people in this castle did? Too young? Going to inherit soon and has no time?

She obviously loves adventure stories and enjoys getting out of the castle when she can so I can't really believe it's lack of interest.

She's got lessons but I have yet to see her to attend to any kind of official business.

Considering how long magic users live I'd think there'd be a time when she could just do what she liked as an adult for a while since clearly everyone else at this castle including the king and his brother have been able to before taking on their responsibilities.
