You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

You've said goodbye to Luciana, tried to cheer Marianne up, got forced to dance with her, and learned some things...

...and now you're about ot learn what your magical affinity is.

>Guard Rank: RABBIT
>Congratulations, you are now a nonassuming Rabbit!
>While rabbits are also small mammals, but people actually like having them around!
>The Princess is pretty much indifferent towards you now!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

I saw the shitstorm that happened at the end of the last thread, and I'm sorry for that. I thought that it was pretty clear that the light/darkness affinities were going to be a gamble, but I guess not?

In any event, the diceroll for that failed so it's out.

There were some people who were saying that they'd have opted for another element of the Sun-type if they knew they couldn't get Light, and I can understand their frustration. As such, I'm considering doing a FINAL revote between Metal, Fire, Lighting and wind.

People on IRC said to revote, people on Twitter said to just leave it alone, and I honestly have no preference so I'll leave it up to you guys.
>>
We already learned. Just keep the story going. No more fucking votes.
>>
>>27541611
Do not worry Archy we still love you, 1 or 2 mp off magic pertaining to our affinity nothing to throw a fit about.
>>
I just want to play, not re re re elect Obama tonight. So much time wasted on that already.
>>
>>27541611
It's okay, I understood what you meant, and if I can get it, I'm sure the others will in time.

I'd say leave it alone for now, if you go for second preferences on voting it's just going to be a hassle.
>>
>>27541611
If people didn't understand the rules it's their problem, lets continue the story.
>>
>>27541611
I want a revote, fuck that retarded shit last night.
>>
How much does the type of magic actually matter?
>>
>>27541611
Revote.
>>
>>27541669
Not at all. It's just cool.
>>
>>27541669
It's a minor cost bonus. That's it, since Reinhold is a swordsman and not a pure mage.
>>
>>27541611
Calling for a revote unless magic affinity is super unimportant. If it's super unimportant, why in god's name did you even make a roll to yank light out from under us? It would make no goddamn sense.
>>
>>27541685
In that case lets leave it and move on, discussing this is just going to lead to a massive argument very fast.
>>
>>27541611
I'm fine with Metal, and I wasn't here to vote. It's not really a big deal in the end, and slowing things up for this seems unnecessary.

Besides, Metal means we can do some cool sword tricks.
>>
>>27541611
I want a revote, not because what I voted for didn't win, but because the way you held that vote was retarded. I mean, really, random chance to lose your vote? I know you were tired and all, but seriously. Don't call it sour grapes.
>>
>>27541698
If it's something that small, seconded. Not worth choking a thread over.
>>
>>27541611
>>27541685
Just move on then. If we call another vote someone is going to start a shitstorm, again. Well they'll probably do that anyway, but if we move on we can just ignore them until they yell themselves to sleep.
>>
>>27541611
Calling for a revote. You fucked up and you need to own up for it instead of saying people "just didn't understand the rules".
>>

>>27541691

If this affinity is not a big deal WHY DID YOU MAKE US ROLL FOR LIGHT AFTER WE PICKED IT?
>>
>>27541699
This. As far as I'm concerned, Metal affinity is just a funny way of spelling SWORD.
>>
>>27541691
Seconding this. Let us be Paladin-fag.
>>
>>27541611
Calling for a revote or just give us the damn element we picked and stop hiding behind a bullshit diceroll. You should have had us roll before we even voted to see if we could pick light at all.
>>
>>27541763
Please stop with the whole sword thing, that joke got tired the first thread it showed up in.
>>
>>27541752
Because it's rare. Fuck guy.
>>
>>27541611
Eh fuck it, I can live with what we got
>>
>>27541611
Keep it as is, you bending over too much for these guys, just make the next roll more clear.
>>
>>27541611
I don't care anymore, but I won't forget that you're being a fucking pussy by not saying you made a mistake in handling it and trying to blame the people who got mad.
>>
Alright. The majority has spoken, no revote. Sorry that I wasn't more clear the first time around.

On with the story.
>>
>>27541752
was stated to be super rare and that if we picked it we would have to roll to see if we could get it
also, Metal fits our character better and sounds like it could lead to interesting things

not all things will go our way in quests, anon. Please try to be excellent to the QM, who is entertaining us for free with no benefit to themselves, and rid yourself of your current faggotry and bitching
>>
>>27541752
We needed to break 80 to get light if we wanted it. It was a SUPER RARE POWER after all.
>>27541611
No vote, metal is fine. Metal is perfect for us. It's just a bonus to how many spells we can use so it really doesn't matter.
>>
>>27541611
Does Earth magic include druid style magic, with healing spells and whatever?
>>
>>27541786
Fuck rarity. It means exactly jack shit when you've only got one goddamn player. Plus, he's trying to weasel out on saying he fucked up.
>>
So when we last left off we just crapped a pile of iron filings onto the library floor and Sylvie is all excited for it. We should ask if there's a dustpan or something before the librarian sees our mess.
>>
>>27541611
i say we picked Metal last time, and you said it was a rare element. if it's rare, it should be powerful and/or darn useful in the right situations. screw the reroll and get on with it.
>>
>>27541823
You should leave OP's ass once in awhile, might be hard to breath up there.
>>
>>27541819
Its all good, i do admit i found the rules pretty clear and understandable.
>>
>>27541777
joke or not, one of the main points of the quest is that we got to where we are through sheer strength of character and skill in SWORD. I happen to like that our magical affinity would seem to reflect this.
>>
>>27541833
That sounds like a good idea, I imagine he's the kind of person who likes his library spotless.
>>
>>27541819
Give a real apology. Say you fucked up in your polling and quit listening to the sycophants in this thread.

If you really apologize, I'll deal with you throwing my vote away due to your fucked up rules.
>>
>>27541823
>who is entertaining us for free with no benefit to themselves

Are women incapable of enjoying sex too, Anon?
>>
>>27541819
Thank you.
>>27541829
He didn't fuck up you stupid shit, read the fucking rules. Rarity matters in-universe that's why it means something.
>>
>>27541825
i would believe light magic either to be held by the high priests of the churches, or royalty i bet.
>>27541833
if used right, Metal could completely negate lighting magic (grounding rods) and be defensive than earth magic (metal breaks stone easier). it's a good magic to have as a body guard.
>>
Well shit this thread is off to a horrible start, i honestly don't see why these guys are bitching so much about a roll that wasn't story relevant and would mostly play a small role.
>>
>>27541877
We eat lightning and shit iron.
>>
>>27541858
I know man, but it just feels a little cliche and locks out character into one niche.
I wanted to go with water to try and reflect his childhood and growth a little bit, and since the vote was started on the basis of the main character being an orphan it seemed like it would have some impact on our parents as well and water in my mind could reflect on them too.
>>
>>27541874
He did fuck up you stupid cunt.

He fucked up by holding a poll where your vote could be randomly discarded instead of having us roll for rarity first, and *then* having a vote on what options were left.

He is refusing to acknowledge that the shitstorm isn't the fault of players, but the fault of him making a system that can cheat you out of your vote. He should own up to that, and not just call people sour fucking grapes.
>>
>>27541863
You accepted the rules by casting your vote, shut up and get out, or accept the result.
>>
>>27541859
that might not be hard to do. we could control metal like we have magnet powers as well. remind you of some one from X-men much?
>>
>>27541910
Quit sucking archelon's dick. I like the quest. I like it a lot. But I'm not going to sit around and say everything he does is right just because I like his quest.

meanwhile, back at the plot...
>>
>>27541819
>>27541828
Can you please answer my question
>>
I don't care enough about what our affinity is enough to sit through more shitstorm. Let's please just move on.
>>
>>27541922
We're still too new at this to have much idea on how to do that, but maybe our cute shy friend will show us how.
>>
Keep it.
>>

1. Archelon gives in
2. They leave
3. They give up/forget

That's great, but by shitting up the thread with your complaints you're actively making it worse, if you've made your complaint and it's been taken into consideration so just calm down and lets get on with it.
>>
>>27541937
Healing magic is of neutral affinity. Everyone can use it at the same efficiency.
>>
And then the story continued and we never spoke of voting or the people who voted or the people who kept demanding votes ever again.

Just ignore this bickering and move on, we'll get our shit together in a bit.
>>

>>27541959
I just pictured poor Anon here holding a baby as they said that. I can no longer take them seriously.
>>
>>27541956
The solution is to stop acknowledging them and we get back to the game. Let them whine while we have fun.

"Sylvie, there isn't a dustpan or something around here, is there?"
>>
>>27541967
I still can't understand why they are so pissed about a choice that was stated to be a gamble.
>>
And here I was thinking I could enjoy my evening till the wee morning.
>>
As the scroll bursts into flame, you can feel something strange welling from within

you. As you look over at Sylvie, your vision is clouded by... sand?

"Oh wow, Reinhold! You're a... no, wait. It's... black?"

As the effects of the spell ends, the ground is covered in black sand... picking it

up, you realize that it's not what you're used to seeing on beaches, but rather

it's the black iron sand that one would find in a blacksmith's shop.

"...wow," Sylvie says, as she picks up a handful. "It looks like your base is

Earth, just like me... but I guess this means that your specific affinity is metal?

That's really rare!"
"..it is? Is there something special about it?"
"Umm... well, it's a subtype of the Earth element. Spells of that type will cost

less energy whe you cast then, but I think I read somewhere that some Earth spells

will form as metal instead of stone," she says to you, adjusting her glasses.
"Huh, that sounds kind of weird," you say, not quite sure what that will entail

since you don't actually know any spells.

"But still, that's great! I ought to tell my father, he'll be really impressed!"

Sylvie exclaims as she takes your hand and jumps around a bit.

>[1/2]

"Metal affinity, eh? That's quite rare..." Gerhard says from behind Sylvie.
"...you were there the entire time?" you reply, having completely forgotten about him.
"I apologize for eavesdropping, but it's not often that interesting events such as this happen here in the library," Gerhard says with a bow. "...though I suppose I have a bit of a mess to clean up now."

You and Sylvie look at the metal sand that's scattered all over the floor, and then back at Gerhard.

"Um, sorry about that. I'm the one who did it, so I'll clean it up..." you say, feeling quite guilty.
"I'll help out too, Mr. Gerhard. I managed to avoid starting a fire, but I forgot about the other effects of that spell..." Sylvie joins in.
"No matter, I'll have this cleaned up in no time. The two of you can carry on as you were, there's no need to feel bad."

With that, Gerhard goes off to find a broom and the two of you head back to the table.

"Umm... so that's done now. Did you have any questions about what just happened, or should we call it a night?" Sylvie asks.

>ask a question
>nah, that's enough for now

>>
>>27542173
Well, on the one hand, there's the chance they wouldn't foresee the possibility and bring a metal dagger, meaning it's useful.

If they do bring an ivory/bone/ceramic dagger, then while we can't detect them, we still have our mundane talents. Plus, we forced them to go out of their way to get a special, non-metallic dagger, which may be of lesser quality than a metal dagger and potentially be a clue that can be used to track down where they came from.

Plus any assassins would have to have no metal at all on their person to entirely evade the metal-sense spell.

And all of that aside, having special metal-sense in a swordfight does sound handy.

It might not be useful in all cases, but it sounds like it'd be good to have in enough of them to be worth asking after.

The only thing we have to fear is vampire
Incursion. Seriously vampires could be everywhere right now. That guy, the one with the beard? Vampire. Well maybe. I dont know... the point is vampires are serious business. Also monks dont carry any metal so if you see monks walking around they're here to kill us....
Marrianna: ... you are never addressing the people again.
Reinhold: what?! It was a great joke!

"Questions? Um, I actually have a bunch..." you say.
"Really? Ask away, I'll be happy to help!" Sylvie replies with a warm smile.
"So, umm..." you scratch your head. "That stuff with the metal sand won't happen again, will it?" you say as you glance over at Gerhard, who is whistling as he sweeps.
"Not unless you cast that spell again, no," Sylvie replies, giggling. "Spirit Field's a spell that forms the element of your affinity around you, and it scales depending on your base amount of magical energy. I got sand, you got iron sand, and a shell of rock formed aroumd my father when he was showing me how to cast it."
"A shell... wow," you say, genuinely impressed. "...wait. If it was a shell of -rock-, how'd he get out of it?"
"Umm, he punched it really hard from inside and it kind of shattered rounfd him, Sylvie replies, laughing nervously.

Yet another reason to stay on Sir Vincent's good side...

"So, uh..." you begin, "what exactly can I do with this Metal affinity?" you ask.
"Hm? Umm... Metal... oh yeah," Sylvie snaps her fingers. "Earth-type spells will take less energy for you to use, and some Earth spells might change when you cast them."
"Oh?"

"...oh yeah," you say, remembering something else. "If it's not prying or anything, do you know what affinities that the Princess or the other people here in the castle have?" you ask.
"That's not really a secret or anything," Sylvie replies. "The King, Princess Marianne, my mother, and pretty much everyone else in the royal family has had Water affinity. It's because we're all descended from Sivarios, I guess. Oh, but me and my sisters have Earth affinity because my father does and he's like really strong."
"Yeah, I can see that," you laugh nervously.

"No, I'm actually enjoying this," she replies with a smile. "It's nice being able to talk with someone other than Mr. Niklaus about magic, since Nicolette has no interest in it at all..."
"Oh, okay then. So, uh..." you begin, "...is there a 'sense metal' spell or anything similar?" you ask.
"Sense... what, for mining?" Sylvie replies, not sure what ou meant.
"No, like for sensing hidden blades or stuff like that."
"Oh. Uh, I remmeber reading about some kind of magnet spell that miners use to search for ore deposits, so I guess that would work for hidden blades?" she replies. An electric current generates a magnetic field around its direction of travel. A railgun works by having two parallel metal rods (the "rail" part) and a bridge between them to be used as a projectile. When you apply a strong current to one of the rails and ground the other, the magnetic field generated will accelerate the bridge (the "gun" part). The main problems with this are a) it requires a huge amount of energy and b) it destroys the rails.

"One more question," you say as you point your finger in the air.
"Okay, go ahead," Sylvie replies.
"How does someone go about figuring out what their reserves are? Just using a spell repeatedly until it doesn't work any more?" you ask.
"...oh yeah, I forgot all about that!"

Sylvie then produces a piece of paper and a pencil, and quickly jots something down.

"Most spells aren't really the kind of thing that you can safely use indoors, but here's the incantation for Sparkle Shine," Sylvie says as she hands the paper to you. "It's like the simplest spell I know of, and you can use it to gauge what your reserves are."
"Hm. Playing it safe, I guess?" you reply.
"Yup!" she says happily.

You look over the spell, and it's as simple as it was last night. While it may not be horribly impressive, you figure that it'll be pretty useful as a first practice spell.

You carefully read the incantation while trying to form Script...

"Dancing wisps, gather before me and light my path. Sparkle Shine."

...but nothing happens.

"Huh? I know I didn't read it wrong..." you say as you doublecheck the paper.
"Um, Reinhold?" Sylvie says, tugging on your sleeve. "You can't just read it off the paper, you need to actually think about what the words that you're saying mean."
"I don't really get what you mean by that."
"Well... you can't just say 'dancing wisps,' you need to actually imagine them in your mind. That's how Script works, it's based on your thoughts when you say the words in the spell. You can't just read it out loud without thinking," she explains.
"...huh. I think I get what you mean, let me try that again," you say as you look at the paper.

"Dancing wisps..." you chant, doing your best to imagine floating them in your head. "Gather before me, and light my path."

Holding that image firmly in your mind, you finish off the spell.

"Sparkle Shine."

The Script that you'd formed dissipates, and you can see fuzzy orbs of light start to float out from your free hand.

"Wow, Reinhold! You actually did it!" Sylvie says excitedly.
"Heh, thanks," you reply, quite satisfied with your handiwork.

Having figured out how to cast the spell, you then cast it again.

And again.

AND AGAIN.

You keep on casting it, steadily getting faster in your casting speed until you end up forming new light orbs before the previous ones disappear... by the time your reserves have finally run dry, the room is filled with glowing lights.

"Uh... so I did that," you say as you marvel at your handiwork.
"Forty-four times. Not bad," Gerhard says as they finally begin to dissipate.
"Eh? That many?" you look at him in disbelief.
"Yup, I was counting them too," Sylvie chimes in. "Since Spirit Field takes up the same amount of energy to use, and average people can only use that spell thirty times..."
"Reinhold has 1.5 times the capacity of the average person," Gerhard says. "A rare affinity and a fairly decent base capacity... you have a bit of potential there."
"But still not as much as me," Sylvie says as she sticks her tongue out at you.

Yeah. Reinhard's experience until now has been EXTREMELY limited. So, as a child, when most would spend their time doodling or whatever, he wasn't. And now, at an age when most are starting to show an interest in the opposite sex, he doesn't. His priorities are elsewhere. I imagine this must make him appear strange to other characters, as in some aspects he seems old beyond his years, while in others very naive, almost childlike.

Of course, this is mere speculation on what a character from a background like his MIGHT be, while my personal interpretation is that he developed dissociative identity disorder, and they all war for control in his head.
>>
Well, when we buy land, we can let a Church rent on it.

And/or a secular orphanage + school. They have to accept the orphans as students and treat them fairly, but in exchange we give the school a fairly low (like 5-10% profit) monthly rent. All students should learn to be proficient in practical skills like self-defense but also proficient in things like philosophy and history of the country. Or at the least, literate.
>>
>>27544242
I'm more in line to think that shit he think is perverted and nasty could be illegal in some places and stuff he thinks is normal and innocent could be considered perverted to others.

It's been a while since you've had a proper workout, so you decide to head to the training yard. Since it's getting kind of late and you don't want to waste time, you take the most direct path down there.

As you approach the door, you notice someone approaching from the opposite end of the hall...

"...Arnaud?"
"Oh, Reinhold! What brings you down here at such a late hour?" Arnaud asks.
"I've been slacking off for the past few days, so I thought I'd try and get some training in," you reply.

...and then you remember that Arnaud agreed to show you some pointers once the business with Luciana was done...

"...actually, would you mind going a few rounds?" you ask.
"Eh? Well, I -am- free for the night..." Arnaud replies, loosening his tie. "But are you sure you can keep up with an old man like me?" he says, chuckling.

You don't have to be a big philanthropist if you're rich. People to do it to look good or for taxes. We'd be investing in the community, and can still profit off the school while helping out kids who were in our position.

I don't think we should throw our money away.

I really don't get the people in this thread. People assume things are black and white, one extreme or the other.

Want to do something nice? You're suddenly a moralfag.

Want to learn a bit of magic for practical purposes? Clearly that means we want to abandon being a swordsman all together.

"Well, I'll definitely give it my best," you say with a nervous laugh.
"Haha, that's the spirit!" Arnaud says, giving you a thumbs-up.

You and Arnaud then enter the training hall, which is completely empty aside from the two of you.

"I suppose we picked a good time to do this," Arnaud says as he picks up some practice swords. "While your match with Nicolette was quite entertaining, I'd like to avoid any crowds."

He then hands you a practice sword and moves to an area that's free of any obstructions.

"Plus, I'd hate to be tempted to bet on myself. It just looks bad, you see..." Arnaud says, twirling his practice sword around a few times before taking a stance.
"Uh..." you reply, unsure as to what to say.

while you're rather secure in your skill as a swordsman, this is the first time you've gone up against someone so certain that they'll win. It doesn't even come off as grandstanding, he's so matter-of-fact about it.

"Alright, you ready?" Arnaud says.
"Uh, yeah," you reply.
"Okay then... let's go!"

You take a low stance and get ready to attack, paying close attention to Arnaud. Taking care to make sure your footing is good, you dash in...

"HAAA!!"

Since Arnaud's holding his sword ith his left side, you swing at his right...

CRACK

Before you even know what just happened, you see your practice sword twirling through the air, embedding itself in the ground a short distance away.

"Wha-" you dash towards where it fell, but are stopped by the sensation of something being held to the back of your head.
"You had a nice start there, but you hesitated." Arnaud says as he taps you on the head with his practice sword.

Forget that, just bend their shield in on them, or better yet, just have it grow spikes on the inside.

Turn our armor into a weapon, shifting it's weight around to add power to our blows, or even just reshaping the plates into blades and spikes.

Let's not forget that Metal is a subset of Earth as well. The very ground is our ally--we're never without a shield.

Arnaud walks over to your practice sword and pulls it from the ground, then tosses it to you.

"You were so afraid of what I -might- do that you weren't paying attention to what I -did- do, Reinhold. You should cut that out before it becomes a habit," Arnaud says as he suddenly dashes towards you.

Unable to do anything but act on reflex, you manage to block his swing to your side and jump back, then counter with a thrust to his stomach.

Just as it looks as if you're about to hit, Arnaud seems to float to the side...

...and smashes your sword as hard as he can into the ground.

"That one was better," Arnaud says, the tip of his practice sword positioned millimeters away from your right eye.

He then pulls back and rests his sword at his side, cracking his neck a few times before facing you.

Arnaud realizes what you're trying, and quickly jumps to the side just as your slash is about to connect...

...but that was a feint.

As Arnaud swings to counter where your sword would have been, you strike the base of his sword, throwing him off balance...

CRACK

You hit Arnaud cleanly on his right side and jump back, unsure of how he'll react. But he simply stands back upright, lets his sword rest at his side, and has a long laugh.

"Reinhold!" Arnaud shouts, slapping you on the shoulder, "You actually managed to hit me! And I was fully expecting to give you a couple of bruises too..." he says in a disappointed tone.
"I was seriously not expecting that to work," you reply, your breathing ragged.
"You really do have quite a bit of skill..." he says, rubbing where you hit him. "...though you do have a few bad habits. Still though, congratulations."

>how do you respond?
>>
>>27545018
We're up against someone who utterly eclipses us in skill and literally just told us to not hesitate.

It'd be an insult to him if we bandied about and otherwise didn't do our very best against him. We use every tool at our disposal, even the dirty tricks ranging from surprise attacks to throwing dirt in his eyes.

"Thank you, Arnaud," you say with a slight bow. "...you said I had some bad habits?"
"Ah, yes..." Arnaud swings his practice sword around a few times. "Your footing isn't as sure as it could be, your sword grip is loose... those two things nearly cost you your match with Nicolette, and I made a point of taking advantage of them myself."
"...huh," you reply, having had no idea that you had any issues with those things.
"Oh, and your breathing isn't the best," he says, tapping your chest with his practice sword. "That's why you're so out of breath right now."

Arnaud then does a few more twirls with his practice sword, before placing it in a nearby bin.

"Don't let that get you down, though," Arnaud says, cracking his knuckles. "You're very similar to how Sir Gregory was back when he was your age... and he's improved quite a bit since then, as I'm sure you know."
"Um, thanks," you reply, rather surprised that a monster like Sir Gregory was ever at you level.

"Well, that certainly was fun," Arnaud says as he heads towards the door. "But tomorrow is going to be a busy day, so I really should be going..."
"Oh. Well, thanks for sparring with me," you say as he leaves the practice hall.

You're exhausted both mentally and physically, so you pick up your books and head upstairs to your room. As always, you make it a point to check the Princess's door before you head to your own room... and as always, there's nothing of concern.

As you enter your room, you drop the two books that you borrowed on your desk, throw off your jacket and pants, and pass out the second you hit the bed.

Please leave the advanced knowledge on metals and alloys and stuff to blacksmiths. We wont be creating a super-sword when we just learned magic yesterday. If we wanted (which we dont, our sword is good enough already) we would have it made and buy it.
Focus on learning defensive spells and utility spells for now. Earth and metal should be quite good at defence. Also learn detection type spells to check for dangers.

Granache is all-inclusive like that.
Marconetti is male heirs onry, though.
Marianne's husband would become the King, though Marianne herself would hold the power.

Would technically be the Prince-consort, but Thierri thinks that sounds fucking lame and so he changed the name.

And don't worry about me, I'm used to headaches and I have no intention to go to sleep before 5AM. If I wasn't running this quest tonight, I'd just be playing Xblaze or something similar until I passed out on the couch.
