You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

You've come with the Princess Marianne to see her friend Luciana off, but it seems that -that person- has decided to escort her to the border... hopefully this will pass without too much of an incident.

>Guard Rank: RAT
>Congratulations, you are now a pathetic Rat!
>Snakes eat rats... but rats are ranked above them?
>Though she still isn't fond of you, the Princess dislikes you a bit less!
>You're still not considered a person, though.

>Monique then approaches you.

>"I suppose it's nice to see that you are doing fine as well ...though I do hope that you didn't do anything to offend Princess Luciana while she was here?" he says as he extends his hand towards you.

"I certainly hope I didn't," you say as you give Monique a VERY firm handshake.
"Hmph. As long as you didn't cause any trouble," Monique mumbles as he tries to shake off the effects of two consecutive deathgrip handshakes.
"Trouble? No, Mr. Reinhold was the epitime of the -perfect- gentleman!" Princess Luciana says as she attaches herself to your arm.
"U... umm..." you stammer.

"Why, Mr. Reinhold was SUCH a gentleman that it'd be easy to mistake him for a member of nobility!" Luciana says to Monique while still holding on to you.
"I... is that so...' Monique replies, gritting his teeth.
"Though I'm sure you know about his chivalrousness first-hand, Mr. Gilbeault! I'm actually quite jealous..." she giggles as she finally lets you go.
"I'm... -glad- that you found his behavior to be acceptable, Princess," Monique says, glaring at you.

"It was my pleasure," you say to Princess Luciana with a smile, making a point not to look at Monique.
"Ghh... A- ANYWAYS, we've dawdled here long enough, Princess Luciana. If you would..." Monique says as he enters the carriage and extends his hand to help her inside.

"Well," Luciana says as she steps into the carriage, "I suppose this is goodbye for now..."
"It was a pleasant visit," Takamaru says as he follows Luciana.
"It certainly was," Marianne replies.
"C'mon, don't look so sad!" Luciana says from inside the carriage. "You know better than that, you should always say goodbye with a smile on your face!"
"Yes... sorry," Marianne replies as she forces herself to make the saddest-looking smile that you've seen in a long time.
"Bye, everyone! See you in three weeks!"

With that, the carriage door closes and the llamas start their long trek back to Marconetti. As the carriage passes through the gate, you look over at Marianne... are those tears forming in her eyes?

So, so true. a little while ago while i was waiting inside a pizza store waiting on an order of mine. A young mother who, by herself, was carrying her baby came in to pick up her order she called in earlier. with her hands full with her purse and her child. i stepped up unasked to carry her stack of pizzas to her car. to add to that, she even dropped her bill fold from her purse as she was getting her keys. I simpilty reached down and gave that back to her as well. She failed to notice it's loss at first. She thanked me and wished me well in a very honest and heartfelt way. I replied that it was my privilege, duty, and honor to assist a Lady such as her self.

needless to say i don't have to discribe much as to how awesome i felt after that.

I had an off topic question that I haven't been able to ask with the time conflicts.

Every time the other knights, the king, and even some of the serving staff are described, they sound like they can eviscerate entire armies on their own. Are their abilities being oversold/ours being under sold? Can we even take on the other knights in a straight up sword fight? I get the feeling we aren't even needed half the time when some of the other characters are described/mentioned.
>>
>>27510790
Well in the power scale of things we are either number 6 or 7 since we haven't see the tomboy fight seriously and the lewd mage isn't battle ready.
>>
soo... do you guys have plans on the upcoming day off?
>>
>>27510790
It's probably the King, Sir Vincent, Sir Gregory, and Armaud who are crazy strong. Nicolette is basically on par with us, and we're head and shoulders about the rest of the guard. Marianne isn't a fighter, which is why we were hired.
>>

She might be furious with you later, but you were raised to... well, that's not true. Regardless, something deep in your soul refuses to allow you to just ignore a crying girl.

"Don't be so down," you say as you gently pat Marianne's head, "it's just three weeks."

Marianne says nothing, instead producing a handkerchief and using it to wipe the tears from her eyes. After a few moments to regain her composure, she finally starts walking towards the door.

"Yes... you're right. Thank you," she says while making a point not to actually look at you.

As you follow the Princess to the door, you see Nicolette walking through before you.

"Aah... I'm so glad that piece of shit Monique's out of here," Nicolette says -quite- loudly. "I guess you can count that as one good thing that happened today. Right, Marianne?" she asks, turning to the Princess.
"...yes, I suppose it is a relief to have him far away from here," she replies.
"Well, I got captain stuff to do so I guess I'll be seeing you to later. Bye!" Waving goodbye, Nicolette hurries down the hallway.

The two of you then go back the way you came, rejoining the group of Mariane's maids as you head down to the dining hall.

"So..." you say to the Princess as you walk to the dining hall, "I heard that you'l be spending the day with your father tomorrow?"
"Hm?" she replies, not having expected that question. "Yes, I will."
"Um, would you mind me asking what you'll be doing then?"
"...no, that's fine," she says, glancing at you. "We'll be eating breakfast together, and then Father wanted me to go over some matters concerning Luciana's brother's party... after that, we'll probably go over whatever books he's been reading lately... plays he's seen... maybe a carriage ride... the usual. It's pretty much just a father/daughter day, though I'm sure that Sir Vincent will show up at some point as well."
"I see."

Seeing that the Princess's expression has lightened up some, you decide to leave it at that, staying silent the rest of the way to the dining hall.

"Hm. I recall Sir Gregory complaining about the same thing in the past," she replies. "He's so far above everyone else's skill level that it's hard to find someone to train with aside from another of the Knights."
"...yeah, that sounds about right," you reply with a long sigh.

there is the virtue of avoiding getting STDs as much as possable that way.

This why i'm advocating wither the lewd mage or the tomboy.(though the mage is wining thanks to her dad)

Virtue is a greater reward than the false perception thereof. We will be the valiant, virtuous swordsman, Reinhold the Purehearted. It will be our last name.

>>

That's kind of a weird reason to pick something though. It's still more interesting of a relationship to me, regardless of the cliche.
>>
>>27512256
I'm advocating swording. Waifuing takes up too much of our time and resources. We could be a hero that people will tell tales of for ages, who will inevitably pass into legend. In fact, to that end, Marriane would be the best waifu, because royalty.
>>
>>27512216
Speaking of training we should approach Gregory about sparring

The only way to get better once you are at Reinholds level is to fight other very skilled people or fight at a large disadvantage and Gregory pretty much fits the bill for better than us but not likely to murder us with a mistakenly overpowered sing of the sword

Taking a bite out of a croissant, you turn to Marianne.

"Princess Luciana mentioned her brother...?" you ask.
"Hm?" Marianne finishes chewing her food. "Yes, the party in three weeks is for her little brother, Emilio. I believe that he'll be turning fourteen."
"Ah. Do you know him as well as you do Princess Luciana?"
"...I know him, though I don't particularly like being around him. From the time he was a baby up until I last saw him two years ago, he was always... pathetic," she replies, then finishes off a croissant.
"Uh... pathetic like Monique, or in a different way?"
"Pathetic as in he's just... pathetic," Marianne says with a long sigh. "Utterly gutless in the worst kind of way. Even Monique, as utterly unpleasant as he may be, is more of a man than Emilio."
"Huh. So I take it that you're not exactly looking forward to seeing him again," you say as you devour yet another croissant.
"I'm going for Luciana's sake. If Emilio has decided to grow a spine, then maybe I'll pay him some attention as well."

"What is it now?" Marianne asks.
"Do you happen to have any talent in magic? I actually just started to figure things out last night, but I haven't seen you try casting any spells yourself," you ask.
"Hm," she says with a smirk. "I do know a few spells, though it's been a while since I've actually casted anything. Father told me that as a descendant of Sivarios, it is my duty to at least learn how to use magic."
"That makes sense, I guess," you say as you clean off your plate of all remnants of food.

Though one thing that were bugging me is how everybody is easy-going with each other in the castle.

The characters, especially Nicolette, just talk to the princess by her name, no "milady" or even "your highness". Speaking to everybody with proper title is kinda complicated at times and here we are, just going "hi" to the princess.
>>

Careful anon.

If you (X) help Emilio (Y) to get in a relationship with Marianne (Z), you tempt narrative inertia;

You take a seat near the back of the room and do your best to pay attention to Sir Gregory's lecture.

First, he starts to talk about the king of Marconetti's desire to unite the two kingdoms. He initially tried to marry off his eldest daughter to the then-Prince Thierri, planning for the child that they would have together to become the heir to the thrones of both kingdoms. Once this child became of age, the King of Marconetti would step down and crown his grandson king. After Thierri did the same, the two kingdoms would have the same ruler and then it would just be a matter of formality to consolidate them into their original form.

Er.

Humans that gain enough magical power can end up turning into elemental spirits of whatever affinity they had. This is rare as hell nad near-impossible to force, and is the ultimate goal of many a wizard.

Dragons are born dragons and can also turn humans into dragons if they feel like it. They gain power as they age, up until they hit 1000 years old. They then "ascend to the heavens," leaving the planet entirely.
>>
>>27513023
That is entirely possible as well.

It would actually make more sense than my thought of it being the King's daughter given that Luciana quoted him as saying that he had one wife and one daughter.

Also, considering the utter lack of fucks that the Uncle seems to give concerning coming home and doing nobility stuff it would fit.

Unfortunately, Thierri didn't go along with this plan and married another woman instead, thus forcing the King of Marconetti to then turn his sights to Marianne. His first attempt was with his third son Giancarlo, but Marianne can't stand him and so that didn't work out. And now, he's trying the same with his fourth son Emilio.

Sir Gregory's lecture then kind of degrades into him griping about how utterly phony Marconetti's noble class is, and so you kind of zone out... this continues for another hour until it's finally time to leave.

i'm at thread 4 so far, looking good, though i kinda cringe at the scared little girl routine the first time i read it.

despite everyone saying the last of us game is a 10, it was a solid 6 for me

"So, um..." you turn to the Princess as you walk, "what exactly did you not like about this Giancarlo guy? Was he the same as Emilio?" you ask.
"ugh..." upon hearing you say that name, the Princess lets out the longest sigh you've ever seen from her. "That man... he is simply the absolute worst. Overly familiar, completely insincere, a womanizer... Luciana said that he's finally been married off to someone else, but I feel sorry for whoever was unlucky to be stuck with him," she says, placing a hand to her forehead.
"That bad, huh."
"Yes. Luciana's father is... not very good at raising sons, it seems. At least his eldest son seems to be a respectable man."

Deciding not to make her mood any worse, you keep quiet until you reach your destination, the courtyard.

As usual, you check that the courtyard is safe before holding the door open for Marianne to enter first and then you take your seats. After a few minutes, you hear the doorknob turning. Expecting to see another of Arnaud's balancing acts, you turn to the door...

...and see Sir Vincent saunter into the courtyard, a big grin on his face.

"Eh? Sir Vincent, what brings you here?" Marianne asks, completey surprised by his sudden appearance.
"I happened to have some free time, so I decided to pay my favorite princess and bodyguard a visit," Sir Vincent says with a hearty laugh.
"Th... that's a bit much..." Marianne mumbles, blushing slightly.
"Um, nice to see you, Sir Vincent," you say.

"So, Reinhold!" Sir Vincent turns to you, clapping his hands together LOUDLY. "My Sylvie's been going on and on for the past few days about giving a certain someone magic lessons. She even had me carry a crapload of books home for her..."
"Um, yeah. I asked her a few days ago, and she showed me the basics last night." you reply, a bit nervous.
"Eh?" Princess Marianne turns to you, her eyes wide with surprise. "Sylvie was the one who was teaching you magic?"

>how do you respond?
>>
>>27514412
>"....Yes."
>>
>>27514412
"Well, yes. I was asking her about it so she decided to. Actually checked out all the beginners books before I could."
>>
>>27514426
This seems like a good response.
>>
>>27514412
"Yes. She is good at teaching. She walked me through the basics in a way even i can understand and i just succeeded in conceptualizing last night when working on it before going to sleep."
>>
>>27514450
Easy there, compadre, she's asking a yes or no question, not for our life story.

"Well, yeah. I was asking her about it and then she agreed. ...and then she ended up checking out all of the beginner's magic books before I could," you say.
"I'm just really surprised that Sylvie of all people would actually have the courage to teach anyone anything, much less a guy..." Marianne replies.
"So was I!" Sir Vincent says, laughing. "And she was so excited about it too! You should have seen her, Marianne, it was freaking adorable!"

"...hm," the Princess says, turning to you. "So, how much has she taught you so far?" she asks you.
"Last night, we just went through the basics. She's a pretty good teacher, I actually understood what she was talking about even though I'm completely new to all of that. And then when I was working at it just before I went to sleep, I managed to succeed at conceptualizing Script," you say with a smile.

"...you managed to do that after just one day?" Mariane stares at you in disbelief. "Maybe she really is a good teacher..."
"Haha, that's my baby girl!" Sir Vincent says, slapping you on the back so hard that you almost fall out of your seat. "So, what's your goal in all of this? Trying to follow in Gregory's footsteps?"

>how do you respond?
>>
>>27514618
I just want to do parlor tricks. Ladies like magic.
>>
>>27514618

"Mostly just want to be the best bodyguard I can be. I figured if I understood magic, I could protect against it, and if I could use it... even better."
>>

"I thought it would be a useful skill to learn in this line of work. Even if I can't use it, it would help to know how it can be used."

>>
>>27514642
This.
Add in "Anything i could make use of would help" before "...even if i cant...".
>>
>>27514672

>>

"To be the best that I can be."

This. I have no idea why we'd chuckle though. Actually, i think its better if we dont.
>>
>>27514618

When I was younger I never would have had the chance to learn. Now that I have this chance to learn things I never would have been able to before, it would be a waste not to do so. In the end I'd say I want to learn it because I can. Is that such a bad thing?

He's right, though. If you don't have anything that isn't stupid, don't say anything.
>>
>>27514736

Exactly. There're already good suggestions mentioning the utility of learning magic and the advantages it would give us as a bodyguard.

/tg/ is being intelligent. Why does this person want to ruin that?
>>
This is a quest thats mostly depends on socializing with others, how the hell one would socialize if not by talking.
There are times when we just have to roll and hope to win a fight or understand something, but other than that its mainly MC going around around talking to people. If you still havent realized that after 18 threads, there is something wrong with you.
>>
>>27514748
You're so clever the way you word your response like you're agreeing with me in order to redirect the argument the way you want. I wish I could be as cool as you.

"I thought that it would be a useful skill to learn in this line of work," you say to Sir Vincent. "And even if it turns out that I can't use it, it'd still help to know how it can be used."

Princess Marianne looks at you in disbelief. And sir Vincent...

"Hahaha! Good man, good man!" he says as he slaps you on the back yet again. "With a work ethic like that, I can rest assured that Marianne is safe with you!"
"Um, thanks," you say as you try rubbing some of that pain out of your back.
"...oh yeah," Sir Vincent claps his hands together. "Sylvie said that you wanted to train with me?"
"Um, if that wouldn't be too much of a hassle..." you reply.
"Well..." he says, scratching his chin, "the way I do things isn't exactly helped by training. It's all natural talent, you see. I'm no swordsman or anything like that."
"...oh," you reply, more than a bit disappointed.
"Sorry to let you down, kid," he says to you, with a somber expression. "But once you get good enough with magic, I'd be happy to show you some pointers!"
"That would be great," you reply, having cheered back up.

"...well, I guess I ought to get going," Sir Vincent says, getting up from his seat.
"Oh, you weren't going to wait for the tea?" the Princess replies.
"Nah, I'm fine. You two have fun, though! See you tomorrow!"

With that, Sir Vincent leaves the courtyard... and Arnaud arrives just as he does.

"Good afternoon, you two," he says as he pours tea for you.
"Good afternoon, Arnaud," the Princess replies.

"Hey, Arnaud," you say to the old butler.
"It's always nice to see the two of you... but I must be going," Arnaud says with a bow. "Need to ask a favor of the King, you see."

With that, Arnaud leaves the two of you alone to have your tea. though you don't really have anything else to say to her, you notice that the Princess's mood has improved somewhat from this morning. Deciding to take your victories where you can, you simply wait for her to finish her tea and then follow her to her next destination.

As you follow behind her, you start to recognize where exactly it is that you are going... and it fills you with a sense of dread.

BALLROOM DANCING.

As you enter the sparse room, you brace yourself...

"Ah, Mr. Reinhold! Couldn't keep yourself away, could you?" Pauline says as she rushes towards you.
