C.S.S. Fortuna. We bought it with lottery winnings and we never lost a fight on that motherfucker, so we renamed everything related to it to something to do with Fortuna. The mechs are the Victrix and the Belli, the captain is titled "Romana" and the the escape pods are "Redux I, Redux II," and so on. I'm just glad we didn't end up naming it the Giant Flaming Dildo, because one guy put that idea forward.

The Grand Brigade Fleet of New Vostas was the largest gathering of military power in all the Nine Colonies. Led by Admiral Greyback, a media darling and born leader, the Fleet went on a series of flashy, decisive offensives to destroy and rout pirates, raiders, and Ortok nests throughout the Frontier.

Then one day, the Admiral in his hubris gave the order to launch an assault on the mysterious and infamous Threat Triple Red System, the Xoth Binary. The last transmission packets indicated the Fleet had been put into full retreat and pursued by unknown forces towards the Wraith Nebula.

It was 30 years before a historical society-funded search team and Colonial SnR team discovered the debris field left of the Fleet, floating a few AUs from a gas bubble. It took at least five more years for the individual vessels to be identified...bar one.

In the center of the field with enormous rents in its hull yet still intact, was a compact anti-ship frigate. Most of the bodies had been sucked out during decompression, but the captain was still at his desk, dead from starvation. His last words in the diary in his hands detailed the strange enemy that had destroyed the Fleet and left him looking upon their work and despairing.

Judged by engineers to be still space-worthy once repaired, the old frigate was passed on to my security company, where we gave it a new paintjob and renamed it. That ship... we called it Ozymandias, because beside it, nothing remained. Around that decayed wreck, boundless and bare,
only lonely clouds of space debris stretched far away.

there was no name upon the ship we found. no crew save one, no supplies, no fuel. only a captain in his seat, staring forever into the heart of the deep. and a note written in his alien script.

after many years it was finally translated with the help of our friends from the galactic trade network as an ancient nearly unkown advanced race. upon this note was a eulogy of sorts.

"and to those that come behind led by the footsteps that come before know this, this ship was mine, this body was mine, this life was mine,I lived as I died alone embracing the deep as none before me have. and in doing so I have seen and done things no other has I have seen the coming and going of worlds and the birth of new life from barren stone. and now as my ship and I must take one last journey I regard our bodies to the deep which we loved. that we may rest eternal in her cold embrace."

"The Gander"

The original model was a highly maneuverable, heavily shielded vehicle built to get into and get out of tough situations.
Some modifications and the final ship is a highly maneuverable, heavily shielded and heavily armed vehicle, that was uniquely suited to taking out other highly maneuverable, heavily shielded vehicles.

What's good for the goose--

Did you know We Hunt Kings is an orbiting museum now? I took my grandkids up last year to show them the kind of ships I served on in the war. They've got information panels mounted on the walls, but that wasn't the only thing they changed. The old gunsight capts always show the Capships wading in while the Escorts hung back, but I couldn't find a single display that showed how we'd screen them during the approach. The panels don't talk about the 60% attrition rate, the rems we took on stellar slingshots, or the way quiet desperation that would grow in men when they finally realized that all they were going to was move cursors from one return to another until someone moved a cursor over them. Nobody remembers that it was the Escorts who won that war, these days. I don't think they care about the millions that died to save their world anymore, because we served on upgunned mass-production ships and there's nothing sexy about a freighter no matter how many vertical launchers she has. It only makes people sad to see how far we'd fallen, and how desperate we were.

One of the kiosks had the declassified war records database on it, and my eldest grandson asked me which ship I had served on so he could look her up. I patted him on the head and told him.

"Not Today, lad. Not Today"

The tale of Aurora Reliant is a horror story for sapient machinery; her sisterships watched in horror as she was sucked down by an invisible twist in the topology of hyperspace. Trapped below beyond The Wall for more than fifteen seconds; adrift in the unreal, untrue expanse extramuros, the AI watched it's crew die one by one, then spent the next three million subjective years obsessively upgrading and optimizing her own systems while going profoundly and violently insane. When echo-shifts in HS Topology brought her back Intramuros once again she demonstrated the fruits of her painstaking labor by destroying all fourteen of her sister ships in a single salvo while (impossibly, by all modern reckoning) transitioning to FTL.

Every once in awhile, they'll send a few PsyOps ships out to try and talk Aurora down and lay claim to her tech. So far, every single one of these ships turned their drive fields inward on themselves the instant they make contact. The depth and intensity of Aurora's madness is literally more than they can live with knowing.

Over the centuries she came to be known by a new name: Aurora Run. Though really it's not so much a name as good advice.

>The Culture

>The best military

Nope and nope. The average culture citizen is a pacifist, but they only maintain there peace by moving all the violent people into SC. Most of the military decisions are made by crazy Idarian war vets who could never re-addapt to peaceful society.

And the Homoridians have a better military, they are just less interventionist. Most of the culture's victories are either against a less advanced force, or due to a particularly brilliant mind who was somehow cheating.

They aren't pacifists, they just pretend to be, and they aren't the best military, they just cheat.

It's been around for a while, it's called Rocket Assisted Take Off, or RATO. Also exists with jet engines. Doesn't allow the plane to enter orbit though.

One of the "solutions" for the iranian hostage crisis (I think) was to land a giant fucking jet in a stadium, load up the hostages, and take off again. In a stadium. Fire all the rockets on landing to slow down, then fire all the second batch of rockets to take off again.

Tracking penalties! Big guns mean you can't track targets as fast, and so you're restricted to very long range engagements with enemy capital ships, shipyards, orbitals, or planets.

However, there IS something to be said for firing a massive rocket-boosted cannon after cutting the hyperdrive in halfway to boost you to near-lightspeed.
You've never lived until you've seen what happens to a planet when THAT hits it.
I mean, the projectile has nearly infinite mass by the time it hits...

I made a class of ship (That I stole from Eureka Seven) that was named after Russian and Ukrainian singers and characters in songs.

FMS Katyusha, a character in a song, in the song they talk about how they are going off to war to fight for the mother land, and Katyusha, a beutiful madien, will be waiting for them when she got back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SLvtP6KMUM . The ship was a Pirate ship, so it's implied she ran off with a criminal because he was much better in bed or something.

The Young Machete. Hands down, craziest mother fuckers in the 16 systems. Giant Swan? Nah, they just had a crazy captain. The Pecan Tree? They were just crazy for building that thing. The Young Machete. Came out of Pluto Fringe Yard 2909. Original contract was for an escort for... Sunbather? Or the Liturgy. One of them, big old pretentious cap ships they was churning out. Something like The Young Machete, brief says just take a quant core, wrap a Tier 9 solar shield around it, strap the biggest fucking con thrusters you can find to what passes for the hull at that point, then sprinkle every square inch with a point to point rail. Rum Ball, they called 'em. Resupply from the cap ship, blast 'em in advance and wait for them to go quiet before the big boys steam in, enemy fleet scratching their head after they space a fucking tiny frigate that punched holes in their shields 'what the fuck just happened?' oh, shit, that fucking capital lighting up your pinger just happened boy.

Rum Ball crew gets lucky, they just get spec fried and wait for the cap ship to show up while fleet tries burning a hole in 'em. Unlucky - maybe a streaker hits 'em, lights up the quant from the inside, they go nova. Cap ship shows up find an event horizon and not much else.

The Young Machete never made it that far. Crew deployment shows up to take her for an unarmed quant drive test before the weapon systems get fitted. But they don't come back. Happens too, that's why they don't quant test with anything more important than a nav array and a week's worth of grub. Young Machete gets struck, they build another. Maybe try harder with the nav this time.

Six months later, Battle of Helix Skull, fleet to fleet fucking chaos, unannounced ping off the solar horizon, fucking Rum Ball class frigate burns into the middle of Fleet Com, lights the place up like a Christmas tree with therms and, would you believe it, fucking kinetics. Then quant lights up, and they're gone.

Same thing happens 9 more times that fighting season. She was on our side, but Fleet Com shit a fucking brick man. Another few engagements before they draw a bead on her, then some bright spark fucking Rear Echelon Fleet Com faggot gets it into his shiny head to start sending Young Machete orders. Young Machete doesn't take kindly to orders. One time they're dumb enough to assign those insane bastards escort duty. Young Machete burns in, starts blasting all guns at our cap ship. Everyone's scrambling to bring weapon systems on line, shield officers scratching their heads because we just took a volley and no dip. They loaded their gun tubes with meteoric sodium. Rock salt. Then they burned away.

Finally, Fleet Com gets wise, and they just start beaming live enemy telemetry to wherever they think Young Machete might be at any moment. And sure as shit, she'd be there. Maybe after the battle, just floating in zapping spaced suits and pods, maybe before - one time Glory Bronze is first to the fight, finds Young Machete just hanging at a Lagrange point waiting for the fight to start. Every time, she gave one helluva an account of her self.

Now, Fleet makes a joke outta how they went out. You hear the one about how they found her canned, whole crew dead, from a case of the clap? Lies man. There was a prostit-tractor cartel out of Rytig 8, hit up Fleet Com for an escort through Anterieur space. Got told no. Obviously. Young Machete shows up and ghosts them the whole way. Poor bastards ran into a whole Nsprinr forward patrol. Way too much for the little Rum Ball. They died making sure every one of those whores made it home safe. Now every time I'm on a Prostit-World, I make sure I give the old girl a little pump for the Young Machete. I think they'd like that.

The Penertrator, Captain Feelgood's flagship (coincidentally his only ship), it had a crew double a frigate of its size and had two extra gundecks installed on the top and bottom of it, it's command centre was move to the centre rear of the ship and 4 identical imitations were installed, it gets its name from its tactic of coming up on the enemies side, firing its main guns through them and following up by ramming them full speed and hoping that the reinforced hull at the front is thicker than their hull on the side, before firing off its broadsides one at a time into the now exposed interior of the ship as it passes through.

the Norman Hell, aka "Franken-hell"

Made from the wreckage of the command vessel, the Frank Norman VIII (named after the first man to successfully pilot a deep space vessel alone) and the Hell Runner, a 'hard-light' cased multipurpose ship.

When the Norman was downed on the planet [redacted] by the Enemy, only three ships were available to rescue. The Hell Runner, fastest of the three, was meant to tow the Norman back into Earth space, while the Arc I, and Arc II were to ensure safe recovery and transport of the Line Reactor core of the Norman.
The Enemy sprang an ambush of five (first recorded use of their modern cloaking technology) and took out the Arc ships almost instantly, leaving the Runner to fend for itself. In the end the Norman was able to recover the Reactor within the remaining half of the Norman, but sustained heavy damages beyond repair.

-'hard/light' casing
-#4 fighter in fleet
-refit with newest detection equipment
-retrofit with original Norman's Line Reactor
-"Give 'em Hell."

Some minor backstory for the setting - humans develop slower-than-light spacetravel and colonise the solar system. About two hundred years later, they develop FTL jump tech and almost immediately, a bunch of aliens called the Rhiyacc show up and humanity briefly gets their shit kicked in before improvising a shitton of combat vessels out of their massive civilian fleet and turning the tables on the aliens.

>>27535134
The ISS Pilgrim of Winter was one of the three colony ships - the others being the ISS Greenland and the ISS Permafrost - that originally ferried colonists to Europa, hence the "cold" theme in the names. The Greenland and the Permafrost were smallers ships, designed to land on Europa's surface and be cannibalised for parts to build the fledgling colony, while the Pilgrim of Winter was larger, meant to stay in orbit and act as a sort of makeshift waystation until a proper orbital was built.

Europa, however, was never a particularly popular destination and the only useful commodity that it exported was fresh water, so an official waystation never got built. Consequently, when the Rhyiacc showed up, they ignored Europa and went after more attractive targets, which gave the Europan colonists an unusually large amount of time to MacGyver the Pilgrim into a combat vessel, which then showed up at the Second Battle of Callisto, blindsiding two Rhyiacc cuisers and giving humanity an unexpected last-second victory.

The ISS Distributed Denial of Service and ISS Kernel Panic were both science vessels which originally operated under the names ISS Athena IV and ISS Neith XI. When it was realised that the internal information systems of Rhyiacc ships operated without authentication or intrusion security and that their targetting systems had very little ability to compensate for electronic countermeasures, the science vessels were repurposed to perform electronic warfare. The computer scientist who was placed in charge of the effort got to name the ships.

ISS Body Politic is the current operating name of the ISS Salvation, a formerly private massive passenger transport liner that was press-ganged into service by Earth's government to evacuate endangered colonies during the early stages of the war. Political history holds that it was the decisive decision to seize corporate assets to rescue civilians that won the current Sol Coalition president his second term in office - the ship's current name comes from the common joke that half the people who voted for him were flown to Earth on it.

Last ship I had was "Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot". It was a light cruiser with a touchy stealth system that would engage and disengage randomly, frequently when around friendly vessels, leading to us being spotted anywhere in the fleet, and with the jamming equipment installed, sometimes in two places at once. The name came from the comms chatter we picked up during fleet maneuvers coming from the flagship.

In the game I'm currently running, the vessel is named the Sahara. The name itself has no in-character story, but was named for a movie of the same name which is very popular among my group of friends.

The crew is the best part, though. A corporate troubleshooting team. Little did I know that my players conspired to base their characters, somewhat loosely, on other characters from various media.

So the crew is basically Jayne Cobb (but female), Isaac Clarke, and Joker (the Mass Effect one, not the Batman one, though I do at times wonder.)

The player playing the captain basically plays pic related in space.

Not sure if it counts, but I christened my F-Zero GX custom machine through custom decals as "The Cock Rocket". It was a mid-to-heavyweight thing with a focus on strong boost and top speed.

Parts used: Rapid Barrel, Aerial Bullet, Triple Z
So it was basically a long body with a really fat base that would literally rocket past the competition and along straightaways. But like some girls'll tell you, it's not the meat, it's the motion; the medium weight and low grip power on the Aerial Bullet cockpit let me drift slide through hairpins, reliably setting myself up to immediately regain speed with the Triple Z's boost coming out of a turn.

It didn't help that I was the only kid in my club who liked or even played the game, so any time I'd ask for a turn to put it on, I'd basically fuck everyone.
