So, news.

Today might be a shorter run than usual- long story short, I've not been sleeping for shit lately, we're talking 4-5 hours a night if I'm lucky. we'll see where this can of rockstar gets us, but no promises, haha!

Second, at some point in the future, I'll probably be taking a couple week's break to get myself reorganized and back up to speed. I'll let you guys know more when we get closer, but it probably won't be for another 4-6 weeks, yet.

archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989
and the short version is here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

the short version is less archives and more a character sheet... thing, gets you rapidly acquainted with the major players and what's going on, so it's good if you just want to jump in without an archive binge.

++

You and Merlin are the last two into the briefing room, earning you, specifically, a sharp look as you enter just as they close the door. You find an unoccupied chair near the back of the room and sit down next to Slider, who shuffles her legs out of the way when you do, shooting you a glance.

“Alright, everybody in here now? Good.” The air group commander says, nodding. “Here's the situation.“

A screen flicks on in the front of the room, displaying a computer generated map. “Yesterday evening at about twenty two hundred hours local, the fleet's ships began launching cruise missiles on targets inland, monitored by aircraft from VAW one one three and their attached witch.”

Several tracks appear from the fleet, heading inland.

“This woke up their AA defense networks, and VA forty six and seventy two off the America are going to work in a SEAD role. We're also using missiles to target their stationary sites, but their self propelled stuff is still a significant threat, so be heads up.”

1/3
>>
The screen advances to an image of an airfield- you're not sure if it's Keflavik air base or Reykjavik's airport, but the slightly blurry images of fighters are unmistakable.

“We know they're also operating at least a wing of Migs- intel thinks they're the newer models of the fulcrum, and probably another couple squadrons of Sukhois- again, new model flankers. We haven't seen any evidence of their fighter that gave us such a headache over in the pacific, but that doesn't mean it's not there. Similarly, we haven't seen much in the way of witches, but just because we haven’t doesn't mean they're not there.”

You nod. makes sense.

“General Porter doesn't think they've got enough troops to cover every inch of possible landing ground on the island, and they'll have concentrated most of their defensive efforts in and around Keflavik air base and Reykjavik.”

You take a second to look around as he assigns the intruders and hornets their missions, and farms out the tomcats for top cover. In addition to your Marines, the Canadian airborne regiment is making a paradrop in an effort to take Keflavik airbase- your intruders, joined by others from the other carriers in the fleet, and some corsairs and hornets- will be making an early strike on the base to try and shut down it's runways and destroy it's air defenses before the airborne troops land. Meanwhile, your ship's hornets, again, joined by others, will be providing top cover over the landing site, Grindavik, just ten miles away from the airborne's target. The hope is that the marines, augmented by naval gunfire and heavy air cover, will draw enough away from the airport that the airborne can secure it quickly, drastically reducing the soviet's available top cover and hopefully forcing a quick decision. SHAEF is already warning that, if REFORGER convoy shipments keep getting hit as badly as they are, his troops will have to withdraw to prepared positions west of Berlin.

2/3
>>
He pauses before getting to your squadron. “Last but not least, spellcaster.” He looks over at your cluster, occupying the back seats. “You're going to be our flying reserve- I'm leaving you a lot of discretion to pick your own engagements, but I want you to make sure we keep air superiority, and if you want to pop a few targets of opportunity on the ground, no one's going to complain.”

You chuckle at that, nodding. You frown briefly, though, when you remember that your air to ground capability is badly limited- and you probably shouldn't load for it anyway, given your assigned mission.

“Of course,” He says, looking at the witches as a whole, “If they send up their own witches those take priority. Again, we haven't seen any, but that doesn't mean they're not there.”

He looks back over the room. “Alright, ladies and gents, we've been through this all before. Keep it by the book, watch out for each other, do what you're supposed to, and come home alive. These guys ain't the second rate pilots we saw in the Pacific, don't treat them like it. That's all, dismissed.”

The rest of the pilots- and most of the witches- file out, headed to collect their flight gear and get in the air. It's not a scramble, by any means, but most of them still move with a purpose.

Except Ice. She intercepts you at the door, indicating she wants to talk. “You got a minute, Frank?”

[] “Yeah, what's up boss?”
[] “Not really. Got preflight to handle.”

[x] “Yeah, what's up boss?”

You nod, catching yourself short of leaving the room- causing Merlin to bump into you when you stop.

“Yeah, what's up boss?” you ask, grinning a bit. “Look, if this is about leashes-”

“It's not about leashes.” Ice says, blushing slightly and crossing her arms over her chest. “It's just- No heroics, got it?”

You frown. “Boss, I-” you start to protest, but she cuts you off.

“No, listen.” She says. “We’ve been out of combat a while. We're all rusty, including you. I know this new jet of yours is just this side of a viper or X-wing or whatever, but it's been months since we flew with live ammo being shot at us. But we can't be everywhere at once, and-” She hesitates.

You take a breath to respond but she picks back up before the first word is out of your mouth. “And I want you and the twins to hang back and interdict. We can provide targeting data just fine for medium and long range missiles now, so you don't need to get into dogfights anymore, got it?”

While it is true that the Wyvern is much better than older jets at dogfighting, it's still something we should avoid. Boom and zoom and/or missile trucking is safer, and the most important thing for NATO is to conserve its forces; we need to grind the Warsaw Pact down to a manageable size, and we can't do that if we die.

You shake your head. “Ice, that's a waste. We're designed to mix it up and we're damned good at doing it.”

She's about to respond when you continue. “But we'll play it your way. That said, I reserve the right to get stuck in if things go pear shaped.”

She frowns. “That's the best I'm going to get out of you, isn't it?”

You smile. “At least I'm predictable.”

She sighs. “Just remember that people do care what happens to you. Don't go doing anything stupid, alright?”

You move out of arm's reach before responding. “Ya know, anyone ever tell you you're cute when you're worried like that?” You say, flashing a grin.

You laugh while Merlin rushes to catch up to you and Ice makes choking noises- unable to articulate a response.

You meet up with your crew chief in the hangar- you've got to shout to be heard over the noise, but that's hardly surprising- up top, the bow and waist cats are in action, slinging aircraft into the sky and down here, the last few fighters to launch are being armed up and moved to the elevators.

“We've got her loaded for a mixed mission, boss.” He says, jerking a thumb back at the fighter. “Phoenix twos in the top bays, agiles in the nacelle bays, and that fuckoff big particle cannon in the centerline bay. We're last in the list to launch though, we can change it up if you want.”

[x] No, that sounds good.

You shoot him a thumbs up- not trying to speak over the rumble of another pair of launches.

You climb into your fighter as the ground crew rolls it forward onto the elevator- technically, you're not supposed to be onboard while it's on an elevator, but most of the time, no one cares. The Witches will be following you up, their strikers loaded on their tractor. They don't actually use the catapults- they're too light, and don't need it anyway. Out off the bow, steam rises from the catapults as the next pair of fighters- tomcats- roll into place. Your canopy hatch thumps shut as they start running up their jets, muting the sound.

“You ready for this, Merlin?” You ask, taking a second to examine your battered gloves- good luck, right? Looks like the seam is coming out along one side, time to get that fixed.

In response, the ejection system clicks over automatic- both seats go, regardless of who initiates the sequence. You don't really respond to that- what could you say, anyway?

You're directed onto the bow cat shortly after the two tomcats are clawing their way skyward, joining their formation. Behind you, off the waist, the witches start their own launches- you can't help but notice that the other group isn't present at all- which is unusual, and just confirms that they're not flight witches at all.

1/2
>>
You fix your eyes forward, slowly running up the throttle to full blower- and then you're slammed into your seat by the force of the steam catapult doing it's thing, followed by the all too familiar lurch as you leave the carrier's deck and your wings bite air. You climb skyward, mindful of the SAM coverage of the soviet forces- you'll have to dive again to avoid their big systems.

You're joined in the air by the witches, the twins taking their place off your right wing, with Ice and slider strung out in line abreast off to your left and a few hundred yards ahead of you.

“Our initial AOR is the beaches.” Ice says. “If they call for additional support over Keflavik, we'll make a judgement call on who tackles it. The Ghede and the Twins are going to be in support, if you need missiles, call Merlin or Jaws.”

While the attack isn't a complete surprise, the A-7s off the America have managed to suppress most of the local air defenses- they've been surging sorties, maintaining a slightly inhuman rate to keep their birds in the air. The Soviets, though, weren't caught on the ground- their fighters just don't seem to be in the area. Still, there's calls by the marines for attacks on specific trouble spots- you could take some of the strain off the hornet drivers if you wanted to, and get a good test of the cannon against ground targets.

Then again, you've got a good perch now, and you'd hate to be down low, dinking around if those fighters show up. Witches may be capable of targeting and firing your missiles, sure, but those missiles still have to travel, and if you're down low, it's going to increase the liklihood they'll miss.

[x] Stay up high- can't run the risk of getting bounced and ground attack isn't our job.

You roll slightly, looking 'out' over the battlefield, watching as the networked combat system really shows what it's made of, uniting data input from your aircraft, the twins, the fleet's powerful AEGIS radars, and linked ground units into one cohesive picture- in your case, highlighting hostile AA coverage, marking known SAM sites and mobile vehicles, and identifying friendly and enemy ground forces with colored markers- while you got used to it in testing, in real world conditions, it's a kind of amazing.

“H-hey Frank. Listen to this.” Merlin says, piping in radio chatter- you can't make out what they're saying.

“Is that Russian?” You ask, looking around. Your airspace is mostly clear, though down low the Hornets are getting hit occasionally- you've seen one go down already, but it looked like he got out behind the Marine's advancing lines.

“I think so.” Merlin responds. “It's an airborne frequency, but it's way to the north.”

“Where?” You ask, switching your weapons selector over to the Phoenix 2s subconsciously.

“G-Grimsey island.” She responds. “Two hundred twenty miles north east.”

[x] “Let's get Katya and Ice in on this, see what they think.”

“Good find, Merlin. Let's get Ice and Katya in on this, see what they think.” You say, watching the Marine's rapidly advance off their beach head- it's almost like the soviet paras were just stalling for time, not actively trying to hold the beach. Seems odd. Even their reportedly formidable AA presence seems to have just been an intel overestimation- besides the one hornet you watched go down, your losses are practically nil.

Something's up. Something has to be up. They didn't execute a low-level, four thousand kilometer flight, staying below DEW coverage the entire time- a stunning display of skill on the part of their transport jocks- over the arctic to hold the place for a few weeks, disrupt a few convoys, then withdraw without a fight.

You catch yourself before you manage to make yourself panic- but the atmosphere is tense. This isn't the same thing you ran into in Alaska or Japan, and it's got you paranoid. What are they planning?

“What are they saying?” Ice asks, right before you open your mic to ask the same. Instead, you look out over your shoulder at Katya, who's wearing a confused frown and has one hand pressed to her ear as she listens.

“I- this is strange.” She says. “They are assigning escorts to transports flying back to Russia. Heavy escorts, too. It is not just a few fighters, it is most of the regiment here, just a few fighters left for the last lift.”

“What are they lifting out?” Someone asks- you can't identify the voice, distorted as it is by the ambient noise.

“I do not know.” Katya says, shaking her head. “But whatever it is, it's important. There is talk of witches, though they don't seem to be leaving as escorts. Too long a flight for them anyway.”

[x] “Two hundred miles is well inside our envelope, Ice. Let take a crack at that island!”

“Ice, two hundred miles ain't shit, we can cover that in a couple minutes. Let's take a crack at that island!” You say, having to clamp down on yourself before you turn your wyvern onto a heading and go after those transports anyway.

“I'm kicking this up to the fleet.” Ice says, calmly. “We’ll let them make the decision.”

“Come ON,” You insist. “These guys are fine, all their fighters are gone anyway and their ground troops ain't even fighting back!”

Slider laughs. “Calm down, there, warhound.” She says. “We can't go breaking station just because we see some fat targets. Out there.”

“We were cleared to engage targets of opportunity! This counts!” You say, restraining yourself from punching the side of your cockpit in frustration. “We wait for the fleet to make a decision, they're gonna get too far out to sea and we'll lose 'em!”

“Fleet's deciding.” Ice says, her voice still calm. “Sounds like they want to load the sea ghosts up on a greyhound and drop them in to take the island. Get a look at what the reds were lifting out.”

“That’ll take forever!” You yell. “They'll be gone by the time they get a damn greyhound over that island!”

“There's nothing I can do about it, Frank.” Ice says. “We'll hold here till they're loaded up, then hit the island with them.”

[x] Ask Merlin to boost the radar as much as she can.

Also: going after those, probably heavily guarded, transports on our own is suicide in multiple ways. A, we just promised Ice not to do anything stupid. B, our career is on pretty thin ice. C, they're probably heavily guarded, and we'd be going it alone.

[x] “Fine. Hope nothing valuable is on those transports.”

You're about to key your mic- you'll obey, but you intend to make it damn clear you're doing so under protest- when Merlin cuts your outbound and keys her interplane.

“Frank, c-calm down. What's wrong?” She asks, her voice... scared, it sounds like.

It snaps the back of your outrage in an instant and does terrible things to it's corpse.

“I- yeah. You're right Merlin.” You say, nodding even though she can't see it. “You're right. I just hope there was nothing valuable on those birds.”

You flick your outbound again. “Roger, Ice.” You say, making an effort to moderate yourself.

For their part, the ghosts are up faster than you expected, and the greyhounds, while not fast, are fast enough- especially roaring in just off the deck. Their pilots, you decide, about three quarters of the way across the island, are certifiably nutballs- taking that bird, with no terrain following radar, in at that altitude over Eastern Iceland.

“Thread board is lighting up, Frank.” Merlin cautions. “Just about everything they own out there, including naval sources. Keep us low or we'll be in trouble.”

“Got it.” You say, pushing the nose of your fighter down a bit more

“I'm working on Jamming, but-” Merlin says before a familiar voice cuts her off.

“But you cannot do it da, little one?” Konstantina laughs. “Comrade Putin thought they would send you here. He has asked me to bring you both home, he wishes to discuss some things with you.” She sighs- the same sigh you've heard your little sister use while discussing her current crush, whoever that was at the time.

“But I cannot imagine my love will go willingly, and so I must make him!” She says. “These others can wait, Comrade Stalin has already asked about them and made sure we are prepared to receive them if we must. But you, my love, you we cannot spare!”

“Frank! Five High! She's firing!” Merlin cries, and you roll your fighter instinctively, craning your head around to get a look at the witch now latching onto your tail- damn everything that can play merry hell with the laws of physics anyway.

“Frank! Hang on, we'll assist!” Ice calls.

I do agree that it's risky, but I think it's a worthy one
>>
>>27153942
Actually, my reasoning is that if Ice or another Witch enters the fight, Konstantina won't hold back on them and will kill them. She said she's ordered to take us alive, which means that she'll be fighting at a handicap so long as its just us and her.
I want to keep that edge, which I think is better than having a witch assist us, especially if those SAM's paint us while we're fighting Konstantina.
>>
>>27153835

Taking on the bad guy singlehandedly works in most anime but this isn't an animated series, even if our jet is just damaged enough to force us to punch out without out fireballing, she might shoot Merlin out of spite while we're free falling or floating. She might capture Merlin with us which could be worse than death for her. And we promised Ice no heroics.

[x] “Negative! You guys handle the island's defenses, I've got this!”

“Negative!” You call back, trying to lose the pursuit. So far, she hasn't been able to plant rounds in the shields, but that's only a matter of time. “Just cover the ghosts, I've got this!”

You're in some kind of warped flat scissors with her- She can't get an angle at you, not without surrendering movement and momentum, and down this low, she doesn't dare start rolling and twisting too much, at the risk of doing a mach 1 bellyflop. Of course, you can't get your nose on her for guns because of bullshit witchery so it evens out.

“Very good, My love!” Konstantina says, her words glowing with approval. “Keep us low and I cannot run the risk of losing track of the water, da? Still, My orders are my orders and-”

You blow over top of her, on full burner and gaining airspeed as you separate.

“Wait, my love! You cannot truly be running? Am I so unworthy?” She sounds- well, hurt.

1/2
>>
Your fish hook answers that question, 25mm rounds slamming into her shield while she's distracted.

“Ah! I see! My love wishes me to focus on my mission to bring him back for comrade Putin, and less on my daydreams of our family. I am sorry, my darling!”

“I don't- don't think that was the best idea, Frank.” Merlin remarks, placidly. In the middle of another high-G snap turn.

“Don't I know it.” You grunt, rolling over another burst of SMG fire. You're just thankful she's not like Katya or Goose and doesn't pack a light machinegun- you'd be in trouble if she did. You've got no distance, but you're both at a speed now where turns are, by necessity, pretty wide. She's too close, in your opinion, but she's not closing any further- still, it's down to a miracle she hasn't landed hits yet.

“My love will not make this easy, I know.” She says, and you look back in time to see her dump an expended mag into the water and pull another out of a recessed bay on her strikers- so that's where she keeps all that ammo, you think. “But I must ask: if I told my darling why this was important, would he come along? Comrade Putin stressed the necissity of this. It is more important even than Lazarus, he thinks. ”

[x] “The hell is Lazarus?”

“The hell is Lazarus?” You ask, fishtailing your fighter away from her gun again- eliciting a muted curse from her.

“It is- I do not know if I can tell you, my love. “ She says, sadly. “It is very secret, even most of our own military does not know about it.” She laughs.

“Even those poor shadows of myself from the Moscow academy do not know about it. I am the only one to ever leave that base.”

“You want me to trust you, but you won't tell me what this is? It's important, isn't it?” You ask, seeing your opening- if she reloads, you can maybe go over the top with guns- probably won't get anything but shield, again, but it'll rattle her.

“My love, you must understand! It is- they cannot know about it!” She wails. “I- even for you, I cannot say! I am sorry my darling!”

You don't respond, hauling back on the stick and riding a modified kulbit over the top- and noticing her SMG tracking you the entire time. You both hit the trigger at the same time- twin streams of 25mm shells roaring from your cannon, and a responding burst of enhanced 9mm from her SMG. Neither of you finds anything more than the others shields, however.

“If- if I tell you, my love, will you trust me?” She asks, twisting away from you- though the threat of more punishment on the shields forced you to break off as well.

Heidimarie is a russian that defect during the Communist revolution. IIRC her family is specifically "white russians".
>>
>>27155483
"Frank, why are you staring at her parachute pack?"

"I'm checking it for defects, I'm not seeing any though, helps to make sure. I may have to do a hand inspection."

"Frank, the last time you did that, Ice nearly bit your hand off. Maybe you should pass..."
>>
>>27155558
Uh, yeah, no. She's German.
>>
>>27155558
I dunno about PF's background but according to SW wiki and the biography of the pilot on whom she was based, she's from Calw in south Germany
>>
>>27155558
That character is based off Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer. A german.

Think so yea. He tended to get all the non-Sanya night witches kinda bundled together. Then again, never let it be said that the man holds any sort of reverence for SW "canon"

[x] (Tie! Using a write in)

“So far,” You grunt, bringing the fighter back around and trying to get a lead on her, “You've been nothing but honest with me. But I still need to know what lazarus is, and why it's so important.”

She doesn't respond- and for a second, you think she's just not going to answer. You're about to repeat the question, when she responds, her voice quiet.

“My love, I am told to say to you that if you wish to learn, comrade Putin is willing to personally grant you safe passage. There is not enough time left for us to play these games. But it must only be you, and perhaps the little one- even he cannot possibly bring any more Americans into that base without it arousing suspicion from people who do not need to know.” She says- you roll away, separating from the fight. “I am told to wait no more than twelve hours for a response. I will monitor this, our, channel. Please, my love, please, if you trust me, do this.”

ANd that's it for tonight! haha, i guess the can of rockstar did help, though the spellcheck got some extra mileage.

Let's see... Can't think of any closing notes- I'm honestly just that tired, guys.

Hope y'all enjoyed the run, and we'll be back next week!

Oh! any thoughts on the loading sheet? It's a modified version of the sheets for our old planes and mercs homebrew game- the P&M ones looked much better, though, haha! sorry about that, if i could have found them, i'd have used them.

anyway, cheers guys. I'm going to try and get some, ya know, real sleep. We'll see you next week!

Gorramit Ghost. Now I'm just itching for next week.

Good thread.

I am inclined to go along with this. Perhaps only a legacy single seater hornet. Leave Merlin behind.

>>
>>27155959
I think they will send us in but have a naked snake tier guy near by to pull our ass out of the fire
>>
Oh come on guys it's a great idea!

All we have to do is convince Ice it's a good idea, then command and then get the witches to not kill us!

Or if we don't want to tell anyone, somehow steal a plane and take off from a carrier without any help!
>>
>>27155959
Yeah, putting our own asses on the line, not really that big a deal in the long run, bringing superwitch merlin? Thats a no go son. Maybe they'll send our SOF brother with us in case things get hairy.
>>
>>27155771
moar Heidi is always welcome. Too bad we haven't seen her grandchild here.

>>27155808
Yep, though it was due to his genearl level of attention to things: not much at all.
>>
>>27155898
Thanks mang. Looking forward to next time.

lol to low/no
>>
>>27156001
Oh command will let us do this for any intel they can get, probably load our anuses with bugs for any info they can get, though that means Konstantina gets to strip search us, hmmm, I like this idea more and more...
>>
>>27156045

And bring a nice gift.

Flowers, bottle of champagne?
>>
>>27155860
Merlin is so not coming with us.

oh wait, dry navy.

To Russia? To share with a Russian? Sir, thats all vodka country up there, no need to insult anyone.
>>
>>27156045
I bet Konstantina will be very shy on the ground. We can try to hold her hand and she will nearly faint.
>>
>>27156133
Even though we're being granted safe passage, I suspect that there will be quite a few TOTALLY NOT KGB guys making sure we don't touch anything. Don't know how Konstantina will feel about that though...

Ghost

With regards to the loading sheet, what kind of fuel size tanks are we looking at and what Mk of Iron bombs is the X-02 rated to carry now? 82s or 84s?
>>
>>27156264
running from memory, 500lb Mk.82 is half a load point a pop, the 83s are 1lp, and the 84s 2lp, but I'm not 100% sure on the numbers there. With the ground ordinance package, whatever you can cram in the bay you can fly with.

keep in mind, LP does abstract it a bit, which works great for a tabletop- and is a lot easier to work with here, too.

the fuel tanks are designed specifically for the wyvern (Which is code for I don't rightly know and don't expect it to be an issue in the immediate future... which means y'all are gonna try and trip me up and make it one, aren't ya? haha!)
