You erase the construct's core, and absorb the energy for yourself.

>you've gained 3 EXP (5)
>you've gained 2 HP (57/81)
>you've gained 1 mana
>mana: 32/34

The pieces of the construct fall apart as you plummet to the ground. You turn to save your own construct - but only to see that it's already smashed into the ground. Damn.

Another ray of light shoots down from the sky, vaporizing another set of robots. Dozens, maybe 100, still remain, and while the mages have retreated into the ship, the magic shielding the outside of the hull and the hatches is taking hits from all sides. Dozens of them are pounding on the adamantium. Others hack into the magic barriers with swords of lightning or earth magic.

What do you do now?

<Tyrael, is that you up there?>

"Shadow?!" A rush of light flies up to you. "I've got to land - the Sky-sever is about to gut me."

You can see it happening. Wind is beginning to surround him like a tiny cyclone. His aura of Light keeps it at bay, but it's beginning to spin faster. You can feel some of it yourself...

You spin down to the earth at 340.29m/s (sealevel).

Tyrael's ray of light blasts bast you, detonating as it strikes the ground. A dozen robots turn to ash. You strike the ground just behind the attack, throwing up a wave of rock as your mass slams into the plateau. Debris flies in every direction, taking out more enemies, and putting a heavy cover of dust into the air.

>you've taken 12 damage (45/81)

Tyrael lands heavy on the ground above the crater you've made. "You ok down there?!"

<...never better.> You clamber up to the top of the dirt.

"They're coming," he says. He raises his sword, and it flares into a white bar of light, doubling in length. "Watch my back."

<You watch mine.>

Robots fly in out of the dust - all the same model you've been fighting - though they look like the old kind, not the one that can disassemble.

A robot flies in to strike you with a sword-arm. You grab it around the waist and lift it into the air. It struggles for a moment, beating at your arm, and then you chuck it at another incoming ally. Hard.

The robots collide, and explode. More fly through the ashes. You block the sword of one, and slam another backward. The sword bites into your flesh. You ignore the pain and crack in in half, then rip the robot's head off and punch it hard enough to crack it in two. Another robot tries to get the jump on your from above, but another of your limbs stabs through it like a stalagmite, then slams it into the rock.

>you've accumulated 4 damage

Tyrael leaps and turns behind you. His sword of light burns through everything it touches, slicing metal like butter. He's briefly halted when three robots block it together his his own sword, but then he raises his free hand and vaporizes them with a flash of light. He glances back at you. "Not bad, shadow!"

<Child's play.>

More robots are coming. The dust clears, and you can see them swarming from all directions.

A turret suddenly juts from the hull of the Noiralev.

You see an angel sitting in the ball of the control system - Auriel! "Eat this you metal fucks!"

Streams of light erupt from the ends of the turret. It pumps magic ceaselessly, burning a path through your enemies. Robots try to attack her position, but you sense more magic from deeper inside the ship providing her with a thick shield. They only slam themselves against the barrier.

You see a few robots in the distance, not moving toward you. They're gathered in a tight circle. <What're they up to?>

"Can't be anything good!" Tyrael says.

What do you do?

<I'll take care of it.>

You slam through the latest wave of robots, knocking them aside. Auriel's turret takes care of them before they can attack you from behind. She swivels to burn a path clear for you, but gets distracted as more jump for her console.

But it doesn't matter, because you're a shadow on a mission. Dozens of robots cruise in to intercept you, and dozens of robots go flying with arms ripped off, canons bent backward, and magic jets torn out from under them.

You reach the circle of robots - they're a different color than the others. A greenish tint lines their metal - adamantium. On top of that, they're under heavy guard. A veritable wall of steel separates you from them. It looks like they're casting some kind of earth magic.

You lay into the robots, but they surround you on all sides. You take out at least half their number, but they keep coming, and you've taken more than a few hits.

What do you do?

>attack. No robots, no magic.

You can't waste time dealing with the peons. You Blink through the line of robots, reappearing right on the edge of the circle.

You channel your power into your shadow magic...it needs to be wider, more concentrated.

You unleash Shadow Blast!

Three of the six robots forming the circle take heavy damage. All that remains of the one closest to you is a pair of legs, which promptly collapse; the other half of the first two are burned and melted away. But they took the blow for the last three.

Mana: 26/34

The sigil glows bright. They're about to cast their spell, and an army of robots is leaping for your backside!

What do you do?

A giant sigil of spirit flares under the ship. It quickly grows in strength and power.

"Looks like Hamil's ready to go," Tyrael says. But he doesn't look happy. "...those robots planned this out carefully. If they disrupted the land enough, Hamil would have had to rework his spell...which would have given them time to gather more forces. What the hell do they have against us?"

You pick up the shell of a defeated robot. 002 is stamped on the shoulder. <...I'm not entirely sure. The last robot I met seemed reasonable. But these...>

"Well, doesn't matter now."

"Hey, you two slackers!" Auriel shouts. She's standing above the turret pod, which has opened up to the air. "Get the fuck over here!"

Despite all his obvious power, Tyrael winces at her voice with the automatic reaction born of hundreds of years with her as his superior. "...you can take the captain out of their airship, but you can't take the airship out of a captain."

<She does seem rather...more vulgar than usual.>

"She's always vulgar," Tyrael mutters. "She just puts a lid on it around that knight. I don't know what he did, but I never thought - "

"TODAY, YOU IDIOTS!"

Tyrael sighs, and you join him in boarding the Noiralev.

I'm not sure how this works, logically.

If Hamil's teleportation circle was far-reaching enough to detect and bring along the scrap from the robots we were fighting, presumably it would've been wide enough that it would have been disrupted by our Nightblaze.

Unless the "teleportation" is merely an effect of the spell itself, and the fact that it affects things outside the scope of the circle would be analogous to something like a flamethrower; the circle is the weapon itself, while the teleportation it causes is the flame produced, where Nightblaze would have needed to disrupt the machine doing the firing to stop it from werfing teleportflammen all over the plateau.

That said, why the hell was the Teleportation spell keyed in such a way that it would detect and bring along random, unexpected scrap metal? Is it going to be bringing along ALL "unnatural" material so as to bring along extra building material? Is it just bringing the whole goddamn plateau along with us, which explains why the City 002 bots disrupting the plateau itself would've required reworking the circle?I mean, it wouldn't exactly be stealthy, but it'd be fucking cool. Unlikely to be happening, though. Does it work because of PLOT and pic related?

Am I being a moron and it's just bringing the dead 'bots that are actually within the circle and we consumed the Adamantium casters outside?

I'm real glad we didn't decide that we were going to be a Shard of Curiosity instead of Justice. Between the Skysever, dynamo construction and assorted other magic mechanics there's just way too much shit I'd want to spend all of our time on.

>>25703047

>>25703249
I'd say it works like this
>Spell is shaped in a small area, designed to 'grab' and warp anything that isn't the ground (in other words it has to be tuned so that it doesn't warp the entire plateau)
>When cast, the spell expands, 'grabs' everything that isn't excluded, and warps
>The robots disrupting the plateau would have required reworking the 'exclusion list' so that they don't bring a huge chunk of useless matter along with them, which would probably have increased the mana cost of the spell by a shitload if they went ahead anyway
Thats my guess anyway
>>
>>25703249
Or the sigiil/focus of the spell was not in the radius of the nightblaze blast so it doesn't even matter if we crossed into the radius of the teleport's effect.

Since people have been throwing out yin-yang for the elements. Have some bullshit yin-yangish philosophy to go with it.

The difference between the elements is that one side expands while the other engulfs. Light radiates outwards from it's source, Fire spreads outward as long as it has fuel, Wind carries seeds and spores across the land, and Lightning jumps from one conductive source to another. Darkness surrounds from all sides, Water submerges and drowns, Earth is deep and expansive, and the realm of Spirit is all around us if invisible. Despite these differences, there is a cycle. What is expansion but a steady engulfment? What is left to do after enveloping something but to spread back out?
>>
>>25703937
How about no.

Making up some bullshit just to justify a certain flag design is dumb.

Don't be dumb.
>>
>>25703864
Cool. Definitely looking forward to seeing a more put-together version of the banner when it's done.

I just threw the first version together in a couple minutes in hopes that one non-swirly design would at least prompt people to stop making hundreds of hideous rainbow yin yang variations, so it was never intended to be a final version. I just grabbed the most thematically appropriate real-life country flag design (Greenland) and dyed it Shadow Quest colors. And it's not even symmetrical. I'd kind of feel bad if the 5-minute first draft ended up getting used as the final product.

This was actually mostly because I was worried about it becoming a rainbow clusterfuck if I tried to even out the other elements' colors with Light/Shadow, though I figured that it was justifiable in the end because of what >>25703832 and >>25703847 said. But all that said, it was still mostly because of graphic design sensibilities.
>>
>>25704006
Not justifying anything. It was just a source of inspiration.
>>
>>25703891
No I meant the bisected mirroring circle in the middle of the current version.
>>
>>25704033
I mostly liked that because I didn't want all of the elements' colors to stay totally separate from one another. (Which is also why I decided to switch the greater/lesser elements' stripes over to the "opposing" side, rather than my first draft which just kept the Spirit/Water/Earth stripes on the Shadow side and the Lightning/Fire/Air stripes on the Light side.)

Aside from the flag it was based off of, I had it there mostly because just having the base flag be a black bar and a white bar seemed way too boring.

Now that I think about it, I actually wouldn't mind it being replaced by something like the inner star from >>25703511
>>
And for what it's worth, there happens to be a thread on /gd/ about a dude trying to design a flag for a hypothetical country, so there's bound to be some reasonable ideas had in there that we could bogart (and/or just cross-reference while going it alone.)

>>25704292
I'm pretty sure we still do that from time to time, but SM doesn't feel the need to tell us what form he's imagining shadow is in all the time.
>>
>>25704356
It's more like we've been playing out the role as some Shadow summon since the entire time we first took on the guise. We've had no need to appear as a human for anything other than that infiltration of the Cheung family.

Personally, I prefer being a Shadow blob at all times unless we need a disguise.
>>
>>25704292
It's actually cool in my books. In-character, Shadow likely sees this form as something that helps lower social barriers.

>>25704356
He confirmed that when we first joined a meeting inside the crashed airship.
>>
>>25703249

Your flamethrower analogy is correct.

The sigil is the physical focal point for the spell; it's what you target when you use nightblaze or nightflare. Every spell has a sigil. Some spells are so brief that this is academic - shadow blasts and exploding light beams activate almost simultaneously with their sigil. Purely destructive spells are much easier to cast than something like a teleportation, as they just need to be aimed, and don't need to refine the nether energy nearly nearly as much. So, they don't really stick around.

This is one reason enchantments are few and far between. Enchantment sigils have to be built to last, and you're dealing with chaotic energies that are constantly in flux. Basic protective enchantments are uncommon even in imperial and archonian armor, and more advanced enchantments, say, Magnock's soul-splitting staff, are exceptionally rare.

The dead bots happen to be within the range of the teleportation spell because I said so. I didn't want to waste time having you go fly and shuttle them to the colony, as that doesn't really advance the plot and I don't want to get too deep into the nationbuilding. So, gift from your QM, the robot parts were conveniently located.

Note: your spells don't have sigils. You don't cast magic like humans do. If I ever accidentally wrote out a sigil for you as part of a fight scene, consider it fluff that has just been retconned.

Also, I'm back. Writing campsite shit.
>>
>>25704292

Yeah, that was a tad awkward and doesn't really fit anything. If Shadow wanted to get along with people better, taking on a creepy androgynous form isn't the way.

Taking on the appearance of a definite gender is far less unnerving.
>>
>>25704469
It makes sense in character. Shadow doesn't really get gender-identity, he's barely learned about what sex is for. It was an inhuman thing trying to appear human. Of course it was going to be a bit unnerving.
>>
>>25704469
You probably don't often go outside. Somewhat or even totally androgynous looking people are fairly common, and not really unsettling.

In my job, I see perhaps a thousand people each day, and it makes things easier if I remember how people look like.
>>
I picture Shadow as a coiling snake like thing with an enlarged head at the end
>>
>>25704516

Makes sense. Honestly though, Joey had a point. People like Shadow in his Shadow form.

Sure, he's unnerving to start with, but because he's so obviously inhuman he's pretty easy to adapt to.

You step out of the airship.

You're at the edge of the long clearing. The Noiralev rests along the treeline, and past that, the forest stretches before you, dim and misty. The air is damp, and smells faintly of fresh life and comfortable rot mixed together in that strange way forests seem to have.

In a moment, there's more people unloading from all the hatches. Everyone breathes deep and takes in the fresh air. You notice a group of about ten shadow mages making their way toward you from across the clearing. They must be the forward scouts. One of them is Ila.

"Shadow!" she shouts. "I'm glad you made it!"

<I am too. It was a rough ride.>

"What do you mean?"

Cain climbs from the hatch next to you. He sends a flurry of finger-gestures at Ila so quickly you barely catch it. It's more or less a good summary of what happened.

Ila nods, and the shadow mages climb up to help the injured out of the entrances of the ships. They're laid out on pallets on the ground, and the light mages move in to treat them as they can. Auriel worries over them incessantly. She spends as much time fixing up the angels as the shadow mages - and she yells at all of them for being incompetent, which you think is a good sign, considering her character.

Once the wounded are treated, there begins a debate between Ila, Cain, Hamil, Tyrael, and Auriel - whether or not to use summons to help build a shelter. You see a cluster of stumps nearby - Ila and company have set up three cabins, but it's hardly enough to house everyone, and the Noiralev, while somewhat of a shelter, is mostly a wreck.

Do you weigh in on the conversation?

Why are people so obsessed with the idea of getting elemental unity on our flag? I mean, yes. it's what we stand for, but we don't need to have it on our flag. It can be our seal or something.

If anything, our flag should represent Justice. Since that's about the only thing everyone in Haven can agree they want.
>>
>>25704803
Hmm...You could probably bring back the 'yin yang' circle thing, but make it a diamond instead of a circle to fit in with the angular nature of the rest of the flag.
>>
>>25704851

I was just bored and saw something easy to do in illustrator. I think eight colors on a flag is actually bound to make the thing look pretty garish.

I don't even know why one broken airship and a bunch of refugees need a flag, to be honest.
>>
>>25704734
>NO SUMMONS. Remember the shitfest we had with Xella?

Before my time. Remind me what happened?

Also, doesn't the summoning tree mean there's no chance of summons disobeying?

I mean, aren't you basically playing with summoning without proper protection/preperation, and then crying 'oh no it went terribly before, its worthless?'

Come on.
>>
You decide to weigh in on the conversation. <How about this,> you say. <The spirit mages work in conjunction with others to create at-will summons. When the task they're used for it completed, they are to be dismissed. That way, every summon is watched for its duration in camp, for safety, but we still get the benefit of the extra labor.>

Auriel considers this for a moment, then nods. "I suppose that would work. And we definitely need the muscle. Got a lot to do!"

<We do?>

She cocks an eyebrow at you. "Shadow, please. If I'm going to be an exile, I'm going to be exiled -in style-." Ila smiles at that, but she doesn't say anything. "I've got big plans, you silly little shade," Auriel continues. "We're clear-cutting a wide area. Hamil's already come up with the basics for an illusion that will replicate the forest canopy nearby over anything we want to build, so we won't be seen from the air. It'll take a bit longer to do something to conceal the city, en masse, though...strong enchantment."

You point at the remains of the robots, adamantium and otherwise. <Use those, strip down the ship. If you need adamantium, I can...acquire it.>

"Even if you -procured- what we needed, we'd still need to be able to forge it," she says. "Once forged, adamantium can't be reforged. Enchanted, yes, but for anything serious, we need very serious infrastructure...and the middle of the forest just won't do." She looks over the clearing. "In any case, listen up. I want 500 by 500 meters, cleared, and leveled. Tamp the dirt like you mean it. From there, we build a wooden fortress as the core of this little party, and we replace it with iron or adamantium as we go. A retaining wall gets set up along the parameter. Everything - everything - goes inside the wall. I want patrols scouting through the forest day and night. We need to get an accurate map of at least the surrounding fifty miles in every direction. We'll need to have some people go out to farms and purchase seed for - "

Your one is actually one of the best, by which I mean it resembles and actual flag.

Quick question guys: Should we scout Vampiria?

I mean, it;s the one country that we don't know for sure how it works and the Black Lady could be a formidable ally against Ring City, if she isn't utterly evil. Yi Fang's spies could have been subverted, so they aren't entirely trustworthy. It might be an idea to Hypersonic there and check it out.
>>
>>25704979
Yeah, we've got a week or two to play around with before we have to head back to Archon if we can finish up here quickly enough. More than enough time to get a good eye for the Dark Country.
>>
>>25704979
We can supersonic there in short order if we want to, no need to spend the xp on hypersonic.
>>
>>25704951

Man, winning over Auriel was a pretty big thing. She's a great organiser.
>>
>>25704979
Nah, that would just entangle us into more plot lines and agendas to deal with then we already are. We already agreed to not ally with Vampiria before and we're already on a plan to get Flint's country, Archon, Kan-Abar, the elves in this forest(eventually) and possibly Geb as allies. I'd really rather not add more to our plate when we already have an objective list a mile long we keep getting sidetracked from. It's ridiculous.
>>

>>
>>25705031

>>
>>25704979

I'm not against checking it out. But we already have a huge list of objectives. Vampiria isn't going anywhere, at least till Winter is over.
>>
>>25705019
Yeah she's seriously in her prime here.
>>
>>25704999
>Yeah, we've got a week or two to play around with before we have to head back to Archon if we can finish up here quickly enough. More than enough time to get a good eye for the Dark Country.

We should REALLY focus our efforts on acquiring Keys and/or the Staff of Winds.
Exploring is all well and good, but we should get our rear in gear for when the inevitable plotberg(that SM has been alluding to) hits.

From what fang said, that vampire chick seems pretty reasonable, though. If we DO visit there, should should act as a go-between for her and fang. An agreement, even an alliance between fang, her, and us should go a long ways towards keeping our collective boats afloat.

Regarding city 02, we may want to go and reclaim the power core we gave them. If they've been using it, charging it, it should be a veritable battery of XP for us..... and they seem like dicks so it might be like killing two problems with one shot.

That being said, one of our goals is dealing with and ending the Skysever. If we're going to supersonic everywhere on adventures, we need to deal with that piece of shit
>>
>>25705093

So it might be a good time to go use our key and unlock part of the prison of Hecate. I mean the trip will be short and we can try to get the key the duke left behind.
>>
>>25704979
I say we shouldn't bother with Vampiria now. But someday we will have to go there, as it is most probably where we were "born". The shadow mana pool where we met the Elf Queen should be in Vampiria. We have to read the words inscribed on that altar.
>>
>>25705135
I believe the original plan for that was to wait until we were in possession of all the keys at once so some other fucker with a key can't unlock the prison and gain Hecate's favor while we're out.
>>
>>25705135
no! remember the army that's still sitting on top of the prison, trying to get in? having our key means they CAN'T, no matter how many others they find. we keep the key until we've got all four. then we get Hecate.
>>
>>25705135
For previous reasons brought up way back when we were in Jacobs field, we decided to wait until we have all the keys available to us before trying to unlock the door.
As well as the fact that the key we're carrying right now also opens sword shard chests.
>>
>>25705093
Well, regardless of what we do, all paths lead toward obtaining the Staff of Winds.

Fang has to have it for his air fleet, but if we end the sky sever, that will no longer be a problem.

We need it for freeing geb, by using it to make a hole in the winds surrounding him.

Interestingly, the island where the heart of the sky-sever is kept is surrounded by similar winds.
We would probably be able to use the staff to break in there and eat the Heart.
>>
>>25705093
Archon's truce with the Ring City is born out their combined effort to stop the Black Lady and it has been confirmed that Ring City has spies in Vampiria. We gave Ring City a giant reason to go to war with Archon, if we try to make an alliance between it and Vampiria we're just giving them another.
>>
>>25705135
Unlocking parts of the prison before we have access to other keys lets people with the keys we don't have potentially free Hecate without our knowledge.

If we have the capacity to keep the keys we DO have safe, it is almost strictly better to keep all of the "locks" we are capable of bypassing in place until we have the ability to free her ourselves.
>>
>>25705143

Actually, that whole thing throws up a lot of questions.

The Black Lady is aligned with the Shadow Dragon, right? And yet the elves risked eveything to fight it, including their own queen. The very same queen who obviously spared us, and was trying to convince her followers that Shadow should not be hated simply because it was Shadow.

That suggests the Black Lady isn't as nice as Yang's spies suggest.
>>
>>25705188
it's probably a mix of the two. after all, SM gets off on making us choose between shades of grey, where nothing is clear-cut.
>>
>>25705188
Yes, this is a very good point. Another reason not to go "scout" Vampiria before talking to the Queen, which will take a loooooooong time. We should have some sidequest to wake her from that eternal sleep or something.
>>
>>25705155
>>25705157
>>25705166
>>25705180

OK, how about we get another key and use one. Releasing one of the locks might allow us to speak with Hecate and get the matter of her liberation strait out and we could also get some information on the war 700 years ago.
>>
>>25705188

Correct me if i'm wrong, but don't we have some very serious pointed questions about our missing memories to ask that elf queen?
>>
>>25705093
I like this.

Vampiria would be a perfect political counter to Heavensgate/Ring City, and if Archon severed tied with the angels, the entire continent would in a nice gridlock, with everyone too afraid to try anything, buying us the time we need to get situated.

On the other hand, if we pursued one of the elementals and freed them (I'm partial to Hecate based on Adavan's testimony) it'd almost certainly help us build our sanctuary, as well as track down and free the others.

On the other hand, Auriel DID express severe doubts about freeing Geb, and even said that she'd leave the group if we pushed the issue. I dunno if that's changed after all this, but it was definitely a sore spot for her. Restarting the Elementomachy is NOT a good thing to do, for anyone.
>>
>>25705188
Or that the elves and the Black Lady are fighting for their own reasons.

Probably because they got caught up in the war between Vampirya and the other superpowers at the time.
>>
>>25705234
Hecate is the better option since we have some confirmation that her goals align with ours. Plus the Black Lady alliance could just as easily lead to war over a gridlocl.
>>
>>25705227
It's like you didn't even read all the posts you responded to.
>>
>>25705230

We do. Personally though, I see it as a similiar gambit as to the one pulled in Riviera: The Promised Land.

In that game, the main character was sworn to destroy the land of Riviera to prevent it from falling into the hands of demons who would then attack the gods. So the guardian of Riviera attacked him and erased his memories. He eventually befriended people there and became it's champion, defending it against both demons and his former allies.

I'm pretty sure the Elf queen is trying to pull off something similiar.
>>
>>25705227
Okay, let me explain this to you. If we have a key to a lock, they can't open that lock. If we don't have a key someone else might have one to open a lock. Therefore we don't unlock the locks to the keys we have to prevent it from being opened all the way by someone else.
>>
Auriel rattles on and on and on, accounting for a hundred variables and long-term ideas you hadn't even considered. Her leadership skill is undeniable. In minutes, there isn't a single person who doesn't have something to do, be it tending the wounded or cutting trees for lumber or scouting for a fresh water source or simply moving dirt to create a level ground. Half the spirit mages have minotaurs dedicated to digging the foundation of her fortress, watched over by the angels, who aren't pushovers in the strength department. Hamil and a few others mark the perimeter of the settlement, laying the groundwork for their illusion. Your own construct assists in lugging trees back into the clearing, one trunk under each arm. You instruct it to accept commands from all your top mages.

>mana: 18/22

You and Auriel watch the proceedings from atop the airship's hull. <You know, Auriel, it's almost like you've done this before.>

She takes a long breath. "...I have, shadow. It's been a while...but I can't tell you how many forts I've thrown up. Once, in the Elementomachy, I built a fort that stood alone in the wastelands for three years, during the peak of the war. For long periods of time, we'd be cut off from supplies, or even reinforcements. It was a hard experience, but highly educational. Winter's coming quick, but this winter is practically a field of ripe wheat compared to that. We'll be fine."

<Flint has a message for you.>

"...yes?"

<He said he loves you, he misses you, and that he'll be back as soon as possible.>

"...hmph." She folds her arms. "He'd better. And I mean all three."

<How permanent do you see this?>

"Well...I never worked with that Ila girl before Evinbrook," Auriel says. "She has spirit. She wants to plant your banner down and shout it from the mountaintops. Be a while before we get anywhere near that...secrecy is our strength. But maybe someday."

She glances at you. "I've a man in Heavensgate I need to contact, and we should probably get in touch with Atlantis. This'll be one hundred times easier if we can smuggle in outside aid, and build up a network of sympathizers. We need tools, raw ores - well, unless we get lucky and strike something below. You're the best choice we have for that sort of thing. Stealthy, and you can walk in an alley and come out looking like someone else."

<Is it an immediate concern?>

"No, but the sooner, the better. Let me know when you're up for it."

<Who do you know in Atlantis?>

"The king."

<...well. That should be helpful.>

"He's a good friend of mine," she says. "As far as he's concerned, I'm his friend back in the ring city, fighting to keep the empire off his back. Atlantis enjoys a good relationship with many countries, and resents when the empire pushes too hard. Once Sandalphon puts the city back together - and trust me, with our experience, he's going to do it quickly - he's going to start moving against us in full. Change is coming. Big change. And you're at the center of it." She sighs. "Anyway, King Deva will at least hear us out."

<I'm glad to see the shadow mages and angels working together well.>

"You wouldn't believe it, but you know who's at the center of that?"

<Who?>

"My idiot lieutenant and that hothead, Hamil," she says. "They talk about stones like a sewing circle talks about men. They play every damn night. If I didn't know better, I'd say they were playing really late into the night, if you know what I mean?"

<No.>

"You know what? Let's just not go there." She looks at you. "...are you headed back to Archon soon?"

Where did you get the impression that using a key on the prison will denied us any further use of it?And the mages on Jacobs field didn't even know what they were detecting nor did they were close to finding the entrance to the prison. And over all that by keeping a key in reserve we assure that it is us who releases Hecate went we choose to.

Can we see about creating a Shadow pool somewhere in the camp? Having access to an infinite source of mana would be very useful to us if we had to make a stand, and it'd help the mages out alot. I know they can't tap it directly, but surely it will give off ambient power or some other useful function.
>>

A shadow mana pool would be important for any permanent magitech. Also, mages of the appropriate element can gather mana very rapidly from a nearby mana pool. They can sitll get exhausted just from casting, but it reduces the limits that their own personal reserve carries.

There was also the issue that each key is for a different kind of barrier, and that with what Adavan told us about how he hid Hectate then it would follow logically that using the keys releases the related barrier, making Hectate more magically "visible" with each release.

Because you were getting all up in arms over the fat fetched possibility of someone else releasing Hecate. If we keep a keep in reserve we always have the final decision on opening the final lock. The mages in Jacobs field were just lucky to detect the prison but cant even begin to imagine what is down there. Anyone I was just suggesting it so find an easier compromise.

You use Deep Focus. Nothing is immediately apparent but the bustle below you, so you swing out over the forest and scan the trees.

It's quiet. The trees extend to the horizon in every direction. Its name is truly appropriate.

But then, suddenly - movement! A glimpse of something...

...a human?

You're deep into the woods. Who the hell is wandering out here? Perhaps a hunter, or a trapper?

You decide it bears investigate. You can't have anyone accidentally discovering Haven...

You drop down and flit into the trees. You peer between the branches.

A lone human male walks along the forest floor. He's dressed in thick leathers furs to brace himself against the chill of the autumn night. On his back is a very large bow, and a quiver holding a number of arrows.

What do you do?

The barriers you numpty, including the ones that made it very hard for us to detect what was in the vault. It wasn't about losing the key it was about making Hectate more visible by unsealing the magic, that's some other anon with the keyloss thing.

Shadow Master !!DCsy3GUeLy7 04/22/13(Mon)04:41 No.24395269
As your power burns away, the pressure of your Shadow roars across the lands...

--------------

Sir Flint and Duke Vellik feel the power. Flint shivers. "By the light."

--------------

A lone swordsman in a deep canyon glances up at the wave of power. He can only believe that a powerful demon walks the earth.

--------------

A lady in black glances up from a throne she did not build. "...a dark thing walks Venia."

--------------

The prince of a swamp feels a shiver crawl down his spine.

--------------

A criminal grown man feels the shadow churn from his tree.

--------------

An elven woman twists and turns in her sleep. Sweat rolls down her face. Concerned attendents rush to her side.

--------------

A Spirit yearns for release. A Keystone's calls go unheard. The earth ignores all, mad with rage.

--------------

A lich-king thumbs a crystal ball and considers how to bend the new energy to his whim...

--------------

An angel looks up from a portal. "...even you must feel this."

"It is beginning," says a voice from the portal. "This time...we will not fail."

--------------

A young girl feels the power of darkness tremble. "What's that?"

"...trouble," an old lich says.

In the middle of nowhere subtlety doesn't really matter.
And literally anything is more subtle than outright telling someone about the encampment. Setting up a big neon sign flashing and spinning 50 feet above the camp would be more subtle than this.

You raise your hands...all of them. A hundred hands pop up over your body. <Please don't shoot. This is all just a big misunderstanding.>

"...that's no answer." His fingers work the grip on the bow.

<Fair enough. I'm out scouting for some refugees that have decided to call the forest their home. It's a bit complicated, but that's the gist of it.>

The man blinks for a moment, his face softening. But then it hardens up fast once more. "And what if I think you're full of shit?"

<It's the truth,> you say with a shrug. <Look, your bow's not going to do you any good, anyway. If I wanted to kill you, I wouldn't have tried to sneak.>

"...no one can know about this place. We're too close."

The man fires. The arrow strikes you, and actually sticks into your skin. It hurts, a lot.

>you've taken 1 damage (53/81)

You grasp the arrow and pull it out.

What do you do?

I'd be wary of jumping to KILL PROTECT SECRECY immediately.

Auriel JUST warned us that we would need allies and outside help.

We may not have gotten off to a good start, but we miiight just need some extra help, especially if there are locals nearby.

If we kill him, its entirely possible that said hypothetical locals will be looking for someone/anyone to blame 'wierd disappearances' upon. 'that spooky forest' 'that new town' etc.

Make peace with our neighbors first.

<What is too close?>

<Now that was uncalled for.>

The man already has an arrow knocked. You barely saw it happen. "...uncalled for, huh? How about defending myself against an insane stalker sound for reason?"

<How the hell did you fire an arrow into diamond armor, anyway? I thought that negated small attacks. Diamond is the strongest metal known to mankind.>

"...what?"

<Never mind. The point is, I was only joking earlier. I just want to talk. I mean you no harm.> You toss the arrow at his feet. <We aren't looking for publicity, either. We have enemies in the world outside. We merely wish to be left in peace, and I'm seeking dangers that might disturb said peace. I don't think you're one of those dangers. If you stubbornly insist on keeping to yours, we'll keep to ours...but perhaps there's something more we might achieve, working together.>

The man hesitates.

For a moment, you feel something wild and fierce twist in his soul - almost like magic.

And then, it subsides.

"...I don't trust you." He slings his bow over his back. "But fine. You want to play? Welcome to the woods." He folds his arms. "Three miles southwest of here is a small clearing with a tall boulder in its center. Three nights from tonight, be there, with whomever you call a leader. But tell your 'refugees' that if they try anything, they'll bring the wrath of the forest down upon their heads. All the forest." He turns and begins to walk away. "Follow me again, and you'll regret it. I'll know if you do. The trees are too silent where you walk."

He vanishes into the thick of the undergrowth.
