You've been waiting for it! It's VALKYRIAN MERCS QUEST time!

Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/DSWLkWTY

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles

You are JAGER STURMFUHRER, leader of the fledgling mercenary company DEMONS OF RANDGRIZ. In addition to fighting Imps for money and vengeance, you have your own private mission to hunt down Karla, your former fiance who sided with the Imperials and destroyed your home.

You've recently arrived in the Federation nation of Albion to help defend it against a possible amphibious attack. However, your boots barely hit the deck before you were assigned a mission to break up a spy ring. However, through a chain of extraordinary events, you not only smashed the spy ring apart, but also managed to capture an Imperial u-boat (mostly) intact. After a massive victory party that left you with a headsplitting wakeup call, you met with the mysterious and totally trustworthy Colonel Lynch of the Albion Intelligence service. He's agreed to help pay for repairs and maintenance of the u-boat, now christened the Vergeltung, in return for being able analyze it.

After rooting out more Imperial spies, you were sent out with the Vergeltung to investigate a possible staging point for Imperial infiltrators, only to find that it was a staging point for the entire Imperial invasion fleet. Thinking quickly, you came up with a daring (and crazy) plan to sink the Imperial flagship, the Lion of the Empire, which you somehow managed to pull off.

However, despite their loss, the Imperials have pressed ahead with the invasion anyways. While defending the beaches, you've inflicted massive losses on the attacking Imps. However, you've now drawn the attention of their Commander, Sir Fleisher the Red Swallow.

"Incoming armor!" Alek yells. "The Imps got freaking tanks!

"That's... a lot of tanks." Sam blanches. "Elite ones too, from the looks of it."

"Red noses..." Tarin nods. "Definitely not standard."

"I'm afraid Lynch's plan worked a little too well." You sigh.

"We've got enough torpedoes for two more passes." Captain Davos says. "Do you want us to target the troops ships or the tanks?"

"Guys. I have a crazy idea." You say.

"Oh god no, Cap. Your crazy plans always turn out bad." Sam shakes her head.

"What are you gonna do?" Brillant asks.

"I'm going to challenge the Red Swallow to a duel."

The rest of the squad is silent for several long seconds.

"What? He's a knight! It's an honor thing. Trust me, I know." You try and reassure them.

"Sir, I just have to say that you've got my undying respect." Ramirez salutes.

"SIR FLEISHER!" You yell over the open comms. "This is JAGER STURMFUHRER. You're here for me, aren't you? Well here I am! I challenge you to a DUEL!"

You then wait for an answer.

There's no immediate answer, which makes you unsure if the Red Swallow even heard you. However you see that the Vergeltung and the shore batteries' barrage was rather successful. Four tanks are struck and sunk, while the Red Swallow's heavy tank takes a direct hit. There's a massive secondary explosion, causing the vehicle to belch fire and smoke, but the thing just keeps coming. As soon as it hits the beach, you hear a voice boom over the radio.

"YOUR CHALLENGE IS ACCEPTED."

With that, the tanks and troop transports hit the beach, but do not fire or disembark. Confused, the Albionese defenders stop firing as well.

A hatch from the burning heavy tank opens up, belching out more black smoke, and you see a large, powerfully built man climb his way out.

"Come then, Jager Sturmfuhrer!" The man shouts, striding onto the middle of the beach. "We shall dictate the terms of this duel!"

Your squad turns to face you.

If we straight up kill him then we will have an advantage but then all of his men will attack right away.

However, before we go out, make sure that a sniper has a bead on the Red Swallow, that everyone, especially people with explosives, are reloaded and have ranging for the enemy forces. So if things go south we can just drop a pile of death on them.

"Well, here goes nothing." You say, putting down your weapons and breaking cover."

"Wait!" Sam grabs your hand. "A-are you sure about this Cap?"

"I got a chance to turn this whole invasion around. How can I not?" You reply.

"You... you really know how this guy works, do you?" Sam says, suspicion tinting her voice.

"Yeah... yeah I do." You admit. "He's not going to cheat or backstab me, but keep an eye on him all the same, alright?"

"Cap?"

"Yeah?"

"Go kick his ass."

You nod and stride out onto the beach with the most confident posture you can muster. Sir Fleisher gives you one good look, his scowl fixed on his face.

"Normally I wouldn't extend this courtesy to lowly mercenary dogs, but you are still a noble, and the blow you struck against the Lion of the Empire cannot be ignored." Fleisher then looks at your squad and the Albionese defenders on the beach and on top of the bluffs. "Your terms?"

"The loser's forces will retreat from the battle immediately. No questions asked." You say. "Will that be fair?"

"Quite." Sir Fleisher nods. He then brings out a rather large box and opens it up, revealing a pair of dueling sabers and a pair of dueling pistols. You wonder if he brought those with him for this occasion, of it he's always prepared for a spontaneous duel.

"Since you are the challenger you have the right to choose the type of duel."

You bring your elbow down and score a solid hit on his knee. You can hear Fleisher grunt in pain, but the bones fail to break. As you recover from the attack, Fleisher takes the chance to pull his leg free from your grip. He can still stand on his wounded leg, but it's obvious he's fighting through a lot of pain to do it.

He charges in for another attack.

This is it. Two unstoppable forces were about to collide. What would happen next, nobody would know, except that it would be remembered for ages.

"STURMFUHREEEEEEEEEERR!!!!!!!!!!" Fleisher screams.

"FLEISHEEEEEEEEEEERR!!!!!!!!!" You yell in response.

Decades later, when those lucky enough to see the event in person tell the stories to their grandchildren, they will say that you could hear the impact in Emmeria, all the way across the Atlantic.

However, for you, you don' actually remember that moment. You black out for a second before regaining your senses. You feel the sand on your back and hear the waves in the distance. Other than that, everything is absolutely silent. You slowly get to your feet, when you notice Sir Fleisher standing over you, as indomitable as ever.

You stare at each awkwardly for what seems like an eternity.

...

...

...

"Captain Sturmfuhrer..." Fleisher smiles, "make sure my men get home safely."

And with that, Fleisher falls face first into the sand. And doesn't get up.

The, you hear engines roaring as the Imperial tanks and landing boats begin gunning it reverse.

"Captain, you... you won't believe it!" Elizabeth says over the radio. "I'm getting reports that the Imperials are retreating all across the line! We've won!"

You just nod absentmindedly, too tired to actually verbally answer her.

"Sir, what should we do about the retreating Imperials?" Captain Davos asks.

For a second, you think of giving the order the attack. You could demolish the entire Imperial force here and now if you wanted, especially now that they were leaderless.

However, you made an oath with Sir Fleisher. Even if they were damn Imperials, you couldn't deny the sanctity of an oath between MEN.

"All units, let them go. They're not coming back." You say.

There's a universal cheer as the Imps slink back into the sea. Your squad breaks cover and sprints down the beach to congratulate you, and make sure you're actually okay.

"Idiot!" Sam smacks you the back of the head. "Don't do something so stupid yet insanely cool again!"

"No promises, Sam." You grin before sitting back down and lying back on the sand. You suddenly feel very tired.

"So uh, not to rain on anybody's parade," Heloise interjects as she starts pulling out ragnaids and points to Fleisher's unconscious body, "but what do we do about him?"

"We'll give him back to his men." You say.

"Wait. WHAT." Everybody seems to say in unison.

"He fought with honor and dignity. He doesn't deserve to rot in one of Lynch's interrogation cells. Plus, he'll be the perfect messenger."

"For what?" Julia asks.

"To let the Imps know that the Demons mean business. They can't ignore us now, and neither can the Feds." You say. It's a half-truth, but not necessarily a lie either.

Thanks to the ragnaids, Fleisher begins to regain consciousness. You sling his arm over your shoulder and begin carrying him back to an Imperial landing ship that hasn't left yet. You wave at the driver, who gives you a perplexed look before lowering the landing ramp.

"You're... letting me go?" Fleisher rasps.

"I want you to carry a message." You whisper to him. "Tell Karla that vengeance is coming. Tell her that JAGER STURMFUHRER is coming. She'll know what it means."

"It will be done." Fleisher nods, trying to figure out the meaning of your words.

You hand off Fleisher to the Imperial troops inside the landing ship. They seem unsure of how to react to you until Fleisher manages a salute. The other Imperials salute you in turn before the landing ramp is raised and the boat returns to the sea.

"Well... it looks like we've got to explain a LOT." Sam frowns.

The Empire declared war on Gallia, and put Karla in charge of wiping out the Sturmfuhrers. We hunted down Karla and asked her why. She says what boils down to "I cannot place our love before my honor." then escaped.

>I can understand still loving her and even forgiving her but I honestly can't see being able to live the rest of one's life with the person that ruined it and probably killed your family.
So wait, you can understand still loving her, but you can't understand wanting to be with her?
>Have you ever even witnessed a couple get an argument?
Yes. And I've seen them get through it because they're adults not petty children. My parents disagreed about shit all the time when I was growing up. Sometimes loudly. They got over it. They're still married, and they still do that sickeningly sweet "I love you more. No I love you more." shit, after being married for thirty years.

There is a difference between loving someone and being in a relationship with someone.

I never said anything about not wanting to be with her. I'm saying the betrayal ruined the relationship. The love doesn't just disappear when a relationship does. Also your mom didn't kill your dad's family. You're ignoring some serious context here.

"Fine... just give me a second." You say, giving a big yawn.

"Yes!" Karla throws her arms in the air in excitement. "I'm gonna go get the practice sabers!"

You sigh as Karla rushes out of the door, not even bother to close it after exiting. Honestly she's supposed to be a princess yet she hasn't seemed to learned a single thing about manners.

Regardless, you go through your normal morning ritual, cleaning yourself up and putting on some fresh clothes. You note to put on clothes you won't necessarily miss. Duels with Karla usually tended to get a bit... messy.

Honestly you don't know why Karla keeps coming over to your manor every summer. As the future queen of Belka you'd think she would spend more of her time in her home country. Nonetheless, her annual visits seemed to have become a regular part of life.

You make your way down to the practice room, where every Sturmfuhrer learned the fine arts of dueling and melee combat. Ancient weapons line the walls, ranging from swords to halberds to battle axes and everything in between. Karla is already there, with a big grin on her face.

"What's got you so happy today, Karla?" You ask.

"I decided to spice up our training session today!" Karla grins and shows you what she was hiding behind her back. "Ta da!"

You see that instead of the normal wooden sabers you use for practice, Karla is holding genuine, steel sabers.

"Cool! Where'd you get those?" You say, your eyes widening in excitement. Your parents NEVER let you use the actual weapons stored in the practice room.

"One of the perks of being a princess!" Karla winks.

"I thought you didn't want to be a princess because, as you put it, 'they're always the ones getting rescued in the stories'." You point out, picking up one of the sabers and testing its balance.

"S-shut up!" Karla pouts. "I can be princess AND a knight!"

Taking cue, Karla gets into dueling stance as well.

As for the duel, looks like Command thought it more interesting than another battle. Considering how everyone but you three seemed to love it, I think he was on to something.
>>

>>
>>24758642
You decide to start off defensively. Even though you're quite excited using a real weapon, you're not THAT suicidally stupid. It seems Karla has the same idea, as she only does a few probing jab and swipes to test your defenses as well as get a feel for the blade.

You easily parry her probing attacks. The loud clangs of metal clashing against metal begin to awaken something deep and primal within you. It's a feeling of both dread and excitement that dueling with wooden swords just couldn't seem to match. The smile on Karla's face suggest she's feeling the same thing as well.

"You know, Jayjay." Karla says as she parries one of your swipes. "Why don't you come visit me in Belka one day? You can see the palace and all the knights and everything!"

"Well..." You frown as you leap back to avoid a jab. "I dunno. I never really thought much about leaving Gallia or anything."

"Hmph. For someone so adventurous you sure can be really boring sometimes." Karla sighs, initiating a new flurry of attacks.

"I just don't see the big deal about the whole knight thing." You say, dodging and parrying each and every one of Karla's attacks almost effortlessly. "Aren't they like, outdated or something?"

"Knights are NEVER outdated!" Karla suddenly swings with a sudden burst of speed. You manage to dodge it, but notice that your shirt now has a new hole in it. "Knights fight evildoers and go on exciting adventures! They do it all the time!"

"So what, you want me to be your knight in shining armor or something?" You ask.

"Well..." Karla hesitates.

Unfortunately, you didn't expect to hesitate like that and you overcommit on your swing. You try to pull it back but its too late. The tip of the blade slides across Karla's right cheek.

"Ohmygod I'm so sorry Karla!" You cry, dropping the sword.

"Huh?" Karla seems more bewildered than hurt. She reaches a hand up to her cheek and sees several drops of blood on her hand.

And, contrary to what you were expecting, she just smiles.

"First blood. Looks like you win again!" Karla laughs.

"You're not mad?" You ask.

"Nah, not really." Karla takes a handkerchief out of her pocket and presses it against her cheek to stem the bleeding. "Scars make knights look really cool!"

"Huh, I guess..." You frown, unsure of her reasoning.

"And, I guess... well.... it means no matter where we are, I've always got a little reminder of you..."

"Huh?" You ask.

"N-nothing!" Karla shakes her head furiously. "Let's go before someone catches us."

After stashing the the swords away, it took a bit of explaining to your parents of how exactly Karla got the cut on her cheek. You both claim she just fell down in the garden. Your parents' suspicious looks suggest the think otherwise, but they don't press issue.

You're still left with figuring out what Karla's words meant, though.

---

"Great, another dream." You say to yourself when you wake up. You're not sure how much time had passed since the battle, but it's dark now and you find yourself in your room.

You check the other rooms, but they all seem to be empty. In fact, the entire damn hotel seems to be empty. Wondering where the hell everybody could possibly be, you decide to take the stairs down to the lobby.

And you're greeted with what seems to be the most raucous party you've ever seen in your life. Everybody's here, Home Guard, SOE, regulars, civilians, the Vergultung crew, even Qyburn's engineers are among the mix. The only bigger party you've seen was the Gallian victory celebration when the Empire retreated from Gallia.

"HEY! There's the man of hour!" Jack seemingly materializes out of the wall behind you and wraps an arm around your shoulder. "Hey! HEY EVERYBODY! I propose a toast to JAGER STURMFUHRER, the KNIGHT PUNCHER!"

Everybody cheers.

>Seems like the consensus is Sam, Julia, and Elizabeth!

As you wade through the crowd, you catch sight of Sam, Julia, and Elizabeth, apparently engaged in a game of darts against 3 SOE operatives that were obviously trying to woo them. Fortunately, your girls seemed to be taking none of it, and were focused on trouncing them in darts. You see Sam nail a bullseye, and the the SOE guys groan as they down a shot in response.

"Excuse me, gentlemen." You walk in on the little impromptu group. "I need to discuss something with my squad, so if you could give us some privacy please."

Seeing an excuse to break off from the obviously failed attempt to impress the ladies, the SOE trio quickly make their escape.

"Aw man, and we were totally destroying them, too!" Sam pouts. "You owe us one!"

"Yeah, you gotta take finish the round!" Julia adds in.

Elizabeth just shrugs. "Majority rules."

Your dart flies straight and true. While it's not a perfect bullseye, it definitely lands within the middle circle to count. Julia then throws her dart. It's a respectable hit, but it lands in one of the middle rings, making her the clear loser.

"Aw man." Julia sighs and downs a shot.

"You can drop a tank round on a boat several hundred meters away, but you can't get a bullseye to save your life in darts." Sam shakes her head as she downs her own shot.

"It's how it goes sometimes." Elizabeth adds in sagely.

Seeing as how the girls are now loosened up with some alcohol in their systems, you decide now would be a good time to talk.

"So, you girls have fun today?" You ask sliding into a seat next to them. "I for one had a pile of fun. I got into a fistfight with a knight and we got a tank, we did call dibs on Fleisher's tank, right?"

"Well, we got what was left of it, anyways." Julia sighs. "Even though it could still run, it was pretty trashed from that cannon hit. Qyburn said he was better off just tearing the thing apart for analysis rather than try and fix it up. Says he's got some more upgrade ideas in mind."

"I should check in on him sometime." You nod, taking a sip of your outrageously expensive drink. "You know, I actually kinda liked Fleisher, you learn a lot about a person through punching each other in the face.

What did I miss while I was asleep? Anything important?"

"Yeah, you managed to skip all the cleanup, you lazy oaf." Sam says. "Anyways, the harbor and the southern beaches were hit pretty hard, but they managed to hold the line until the Imps the retreated. The Albion Navy chased the all the way back to Imperial waters. With all of the damage they took, they're probably not coming back."

"Well shit, it looks like we might be out of a job then." You grin then turn to Elizabeht. "On a scale from 1-10, with 1 being calm and 10 being a raging inferno of anger how mad is Lynch about what I did?"

"Probably a 12." Elizabeth says as she sips her drink nonchalantly. "The first Belkan knight ever defeated in open battle, and you just him go? He definitely wasn't expecting that."

"So... am I going to have to worry about you dropping a pillow on my face while I'm asleep?" You ask warily.

"What? No. Lynch is smart enough not to press the issue and just take what he's got." Elizabeth shrugs and then whispers to you low enough so that Sam and Julia can't hear. "Besides, I made a promise to help you with your personal mission."

>>
>>24760480
"So Julia," you say, leaning forward, "I never got a chance to ask you this before, but why exactly did you join our little ragtag mercenary group?"

"Well..." Julia puts a finger on her chin thoughtfully. "At first it was for the money. My family's not all that rich, and soldiering is a quick and easy way to get some extra income, and the job security is always there."

"But," she sighs, "Now that I got time to think about it, I think it's because I don't really know what else to do. I've been something of a soldier since EWI, and I haven't stopped since. Don't know if I ever will."

"Whoa, whoa, hold up there." Elizabeth nearly spit takes. "EWI was over twenty years ago! You don't even look that old! Exactly how old are you?!"

"Yeah, well, you'd like to know that, don't you?" Julia downs the rest of her drink. "Maybe I'll talk about it some other day. Remembering my EWI days gets me all depressed and I want to be a happy drunk today."

"So is that why you're so thrifty? To support your family?" You say, trying to change the subject.

"Yeah. EWI hit the family business really hard and it never really recovered. And we were just getting back on our feet when EWII kicked off. Some great luck for us, huh?"

"That's horrible!" Sam gives Julia a great big bear hug. "Don't worry. Once we're done with this we'll be the richest damn mercenaries in Europa!"

"Aw, such a cute little bugger." You ruffle Sam's hair while she's in the middle of the hug.

"So, Elizabeth, I hope Lynch hasn't been directing any of that level 12 rage towards you, or anything? I'd feel bad if you caught heat for something I did."

"Ah, he did berate me a bit for not 'properly reigning you in', but I just saw you punch out a Belkan knight like it was nothing. What could I do about that?"

"True."
