You are a Magical Girl, and you've somehow fallen asleep on top of your Incubator's desk.

You're not sure how exactly you fell asleep, or when. But you did, somehow. Further proof of that - if you needed any more convincing - was the sticky way your cheek peeled off from the surface of the plasteel desk as you lifted your head up, having adhered there by a puddle of drool.

...You still find ways to embarass yourself, even know. You're supposed to be the new Warmaster now, for fuck's sake.

If there's any consolation, you didn't do yourself the indignity of falling asleep face first in your empty plate of pancakes. You moved it out of the way before you got knocked out, it looks like. At least you didn't smash your face into the bouquet of blue flowers beside it, either--

...

Wait. You left the bouquet on the floor, after you dropped them from Mami hugging you.

How the hell did--

"Ah, Matsuda. You're awake, finally." You haven't heard this voice in a while, but the way it sidesteps your own thoughts to be heard in your mind is as annoying as ever. "I was beginning to think you'd be spending the night here in my office. Personally, I wouldn't mind, but it seems such a waste for the new apartment I've furnished for you."

You look around for any sign of the furry little bastard in the wide, spacious office, one hand reaching up to surreptitiously wipe away the crusted drool on the corner of your lips. It's then that you see it - a rather well-maintained cat tower, at the very corner of the office, cleverly positioned in an unlit area. You don't make any move to go toward it, but you're pretty sure you could see a pair of crimson eyes twinkling your way from inside one of the cat tower's 'rooms'.

"No need to get up, Matsuda. I'm just trying to unwind at the moment. Stressful meeting." And for some reason, you believe him - the usually cool, collected voice has a bit of a strained note to it, a jittery tone. "Welcome back, in any case. I trust Siberia's been a productive vacation, all in all?"

How do you respond?

I'm beginning to think that doing business might be some sort of drug to their race or something.

I mean, Sanbey was all like "Fuck entropy. Money is more fun."
>>
>>24237504
To be honest though, we didn't deal with Kharn, Midori did.
And Souji is not a siscon, and he hardly perved on us. Judging by his girlfriend (now probably his fiancée) we're nowhere near his type.
And I think it's more important that we find out who's on the outs with the other Incubators, Kyuubey or Jyuubey. That will determine if we're going to be attacked or if we're going on the attack.

Kyuubey seems to blink from inside his hideaway, before poking his head out in that madly-curious way that all felines seem to have. "As usual, Matsuda, your powers of summarization never fail to surprise me. Yes, I suppose your stay in Siberia was much too eventful to be called a vacation, but despite this, you seem to have turned out perfectly alright from it. Looking much more intact and put-together, if I may say so."

He shrinks back inside the hidey-hole. "As for my brother, well, we'll discuss that in a later time. Yes, I do realize that retaliation is something that should be expected of us, in this line of work - and what happened does offer some degree of justification to the entire thing - but we will go about it professionally and properly, as I've always strived for this Officio." A moment. "Which, of course, had often fallen on the wayside due to Kharn's tenure as Warmaster, but I have high hopes for you, at least, Matsuda. I look forward to having a Warmaster who's not that eager to call a full mobilization simply because of an easily-forgivable misunderstanding."

Another moment.

"...I realize the irony of making that assumption a moment after I remembered your incident with the Third." Kyuubey lets out a sigh. "The meeting must have affected me more than I thought. Although, I suppose, teleportation to the Lunar Base always does that. I could never get used to it."

The Incubator clears his throat, here - or at least, makes a sound approximating one, seeing as he doesn't really need to do so. "And yes, your new apartment. You were quite adamant on being supplied a new one, after what happened with Kure's retirement." A small metal card, the size of a credit card, shimmers into existence on top of the desk, briefly outlined in crimson light.

As always, the Warmaster Suite in this building is also available for your pleasure, although you'll have to clean it out first. I don't think it's been touched since Kharn left it."

A small chuckle. "Her underwear collection should still be there, along with her rather macabre throne. You're free to have some of the girls help you in this endeavor if you wish."

How do you respond?

Also, we still need to talk to Sayaka. Personally, I think if Sayaka has any misgivings at all, we should give Kyouko a pass and go with Midori. Sayaka's going to be our rank leader for the Eversors so I'd rather not get into a leadership fight at the start of our tenure as Warmaster.

"*easily-forgivable misunderstanding*, my ass. He turned a Magical Girl, one of his OWN Magical Girls no less into a Witch via button-pressing.

The Question that now goes through my mind, is every Incubator able to that and if so, what would happen to the Officios Worldwide and their Population of Magical Girls if word got out that not only do the Incubators fuck you over with your wish, no they also can end the contract on their side whenever they grow tired of you.

What do YOU think would happen, Kyubey?

Yeah, yeah, I get it, the hole heat-death of the Universe-part, the Sacrifice of the few for the many and what not, I also get that most Incubator don`t tell us that were part of the harvest not the witches.

But turning your own contractees into witches via Self-Destruction-Button is completly and utterly unacceptable and if one of you furry little abominations decides to do that again, I WILL find a way to kill all you little mongrels and I WILL kill you all, even if I have to sell my soul to that pink-haired black-eyed monstrosity."

I'm not exactly keen on Midori becoming the Aide to the Warmaster. One, since she's a defector from a rival Officio as opposed to having been part of the Ninth from the start. Second, she's greener (no pun intended) than either Kyoko, Mami or Sayaka.

I'm casting my vote on either Mami or Kyoko.
>>
>>24237816
Midori and I will have to organize that I suppose, I wonder if Kharn would like her things shipped out to her or if her boyfriend would disapprove.

It's been a while since I last saw PMMM, so I'm not 100% on this.

But Sayaka and Madoka found Charlotte's seed before it "hatched". It had enough power to manifest a Barrier and familiars, but Charlotte wasn't born until later.

Might be the case with Faust too. Moon-sized Grief Seed is enough for her to check up on us and give out Golden Weapons, but not enough for her to manifest physically... until it hatches.

That's why some people thought of having multiple aides, Midori for logistics and the more social part of being Warmaster, Kyoko as personal bodyguard and Sayaka for combat support and to keep us from going full "Flesh of fallen angels" on the wrong people. Except the part where we don`t actually now that.

We know that QB did it once.

What we don`t know however if this is his usual approach nor if this is also how other Incubators handle it.
I´m also pretty sure that the "I can blow up your soulgem and turn you into a witch"-is pretty new and horrifying knowledge to every Meguca in existence.

I mean, just think about how it turns the table: Before it was either death due to getting killed in Action by witches or you witching out due to despair/overexertion. But now there is one Incubator who can turn his Megucas into Magical Suicide-Bombers. And we know that this is already the second time he did that.

I mean, why do YOU think there was suddenly a witch out of nowhere in Mami`s Apartment who happened to be also one Jyubeys Girls?

And as >>24238233 said, be the voice of reason in general, Kyouko is also keeping her in check to not be a complete pain in the ass.
And I have a feeling our standing might have improves slightly after the butler outfit photo and the soulgem tip. I'm not expecting a radical change or anything, but I doubt we'll wake up with a knife in the back anytime soon like what happened at Mami's place in the first thread(s?)

More like we didn't have Sayaka's side of the story for it so we all just thought it was intentional until the recap thread.
>>
>>24238394
What we need less is a retinue, and more squad leaders. You don't always need a powerful retinue.

You DO need a retinue that can run away effectively, though, if they're not powerful in themselves, and that can handle burecracy and handling people.

(Midori fits the first role of being sneaky, not so sure on the second parts, though)
>>
We've already thrown the idea of having both of them work for us past Kyubey, and Kyouko wanted us to ask Sayaka first, so throwing the idea past Kyubey again without doing so isn't going to accomplish much.

We still have some time to fully decide and talk to bluehair first, so we don't need to rush on this entire thing, if something comes up we definitely still have a small retinue of helpers even though nothing has been made official yet.
>>
>>24238443
What? Don't be silly. That was just Mami...hallucinating. Misremembering.

Yes.
>>
Every meguca can be related with, quite honestly, and has understandable reasons behind her actions and attitude.
It's just that with some (such as Sayaka) it takes a while longer to see.
[/meta]

We are new and more complete now. So let's forget the old drudges and give her a chance to do the same.

We should also apologise for giving her a kyubeykakke.
>>
>>24238452
The sad thing is that Mami thing pretty much has every perfect skill for being an aide, it's just that she might be a bit distracting for us to have someone who mothers us in the role, plus Kyubey would be sad at us taking away his lap pillow.

As for stability, Mami's older and more mature now, and even back then she seemed a lot hardier about being a magical girl than Sayaka.

The problem of her golden weapon or her being assassinated, though.................
>>
>>24238480
I think Mami should be left in an advisory role/left to act as QB's secretary. It's probably better for everyone, plus it's not as though we won't have access to her as a resource. And she'll probably foot some of the paperwork whether she's our aide or not.
>>
>>24238500
>paperwork
Would Warmaster suite happen to have a fireplace? We should install one if it doesn't.
>>
>>24238479
Our constant love for Mami and hatred for Sayaka came as a bonus for fucking with time, much like our amnesia... Actually I think that came from too much torture when we switched timelines and got rescued. Yes, we need to have a talk with Kyouko and Sayaka about that whole thing.
>>
>>24237822 >>24237826

"Your...aide?" Kyuubey's voice takes on an inquisitive tone, as he finally squeezes himself out of one of the cat tower's hidey-holes - before clambering up slowly and carefully to the perch at the very top of the pet accessory, easily balancing himself there and then turning to look at you.

"Ah, you must mean Hanegawa Midori. She is currently recuperating in sick bay. From what I've been told, it looks as though she'd suffered an entire month's worth of sleep deprivation, dehydration, and other ailments you probably needn't hear from me. Barrier sickness, nothing serious. Time does move differently in barriers, even more when you're in an overlapping one. She will be discharged in a day or two, you may depend upon it."

The Incubator tilts it head slightly to the side. "Speaking of which, though, Matsuda. Does that mean you've decided on taking Hanegawa on as an aide? I distinctly remember you wanting to have both Sakura Kyoko and Miki Sayaka for aides, as well. Not unheard of, of course - the former Warmaster of the Eighth had three aides of her own, although she called them in more colorful names than that." A moment. "I do believe that Miki Sayaka does have something to say about it, first, so you may want to breach the matter with her personally before you make your official decision."

You take the metallic passcard to your new apartment and tap it carefully on the desk in front of you. Doesn't Sayaka have something to say about everything, anyway?

"She is of the outspoken, opinionated sort, so yes. But she is strong-minded, sharp, and quite astute for an Eversor. If anything, you might want to consider a special role for her, if you do take her in as an aide."

A special role...?

[1/2]
>>
>>24238500

So basically be our psychologist after pinky fucks with our mind, again. I like this, I like this very much. And hopefully after telling her about pinky and her connection to the golden weaponry we should increase our chances of saving her by a ton.
>>
>>24238581

"Equerry. The Equerry is the rank closest to the Warmaster. She is above all others except for the Warmaster's personal aides, the Warmaster herself, and the presiding Incubator. She can advise the Warmaster, fight alongside her if she wishes, or even act as her in her stead should the Warmaster be absent or indisposed. She can also help the Warmaster make the decisions necessary to lead an Officio." Kyuubey's tail flicks from side to side as he explains.

"The rank is martial, never one of servitude, although...Kharn certainly made a secretary of HER Equerry. Although, I rather think she preferred it that way. The Equerry, I meant. Kharn has never been one to concern herself with the details."

Another moment of silence passes between the two of you.

"...Please do not mistake this as this Incubator's clumsy way of trying to ensure that his top Eversor officer and his Warmaster do not spend all day trying to find out what color each other's intestines are." He says after a moment. "This is frank and cold-blooded manipulation with no regard to your well-being, or sanity, or company stock. I assure you of this."

...He's getting sarcastic again. You hate it when he does that.

"Ahriman?" Kyuubey seems puzzled for a moment, before blinking. "Ah. The former Warmaster of the Third. Yes, I was expecting Kharn to talk to you about her exploits." For a moment, it looked very much like the Incubator was hesitating.

"I'm afraid that I have nothing to tell you about it other than the fact that we don't know where it is, Matsuda. Kharn's Equerry conducted the search herself, an hour after her injuries were taken care of. She was adamant that it was found, but it seemed to have disappeared the moment Ahriman let go of it."

So it's gone, then? And nobody knows who has it?

"There hasn't been any sighting of it, even from the other Officios. At least, those who still deign to reply to us in a civilized manner." It's here that Kyuubey sounds disappointed. Crestfallen, almost. "Well, I'm sure it will turn up sooner or later. We will simply have to deal with it as it comes, and hope that it won't come to another bloodbath when it does."

Right. Now, about that moon base--

[1/2]
>>

Aw. Looks like Kyuubey could do with a cuddle.

>>
>>24239429

We could do that with the "Thank you", just to really screw with Kyuubey.
>>
>>24239406

"It's not ours." Kyuubey cuts you off. "We have a part in it, that much is sure, but it serves mainly as the base of operations of the First Officio. It also serves as an outpost, from where we can safely observe the Grief Seed of Faust."

It's here that his tone becomes slightly bitter.

"Only Incubators and the Warmaster of the First Officio are allowed access to it, so do not feel slighted, Matsuda. Besides, once I go insane, you will be among the first that I will send in order to capture it for our use."

That's comforting.

"I knew you would appreciate it."

Right. Now, what about your chair?

"You mean that chair you stole?" Kyuubey seems to be almost smirking. "Integrated into your new apartment, as I believe you'll be pleased to note. Tomoe Mami oversaw the preparations personally, and her words, as I remember it, describe it as something that 'really ties the room together'. She also made sure to organize your firearm cache into something approaching a proper armory, rather than just stacks of ordnance haphazardly stored in flammable crates."

[2/3]
>>
>>24239486

Mami's just too good for you. You make a note to thank her later.

You watch as Kyuubey finally hops off the perch, landing neatly on all four feet - before making his way towards his desk, the desk that you've been rendered unconscious on earlier. He jumps up again, easily clearing the height of the desk, and he sits back on his haunches as if to survey the damage you've done to his workspace.

"...I'll have to get Housekeeping to see to this later." You hear him mumble to himself, before he places a paw on the bouquet of blue roses. "Now, I've satisfied your curiosity, Matsuda, satisfy mine. What are these for? I recall that roses of the red variety are mainly used for purposes of romance, but I've never seen blue roses used before. What is the context of these, may I ask?"

How do you respond?

"A joke. I...see." Kyuubey grows silent at this, as if in deep contemplation. "I understand. Yes, well, it's nothing compared to the jokes that Kharn perpetrated in her tour of duty as Warmaster. Filling Vindicare lockers with toothpaste, stealing underwear and wearing them on her head, skull puppet shows...not very tasteful, very puerile jokes that always had someone in tears at the end. This seems relatively harmless, and quite fragrant."

You see him take a sniff of one particular blossom. "Ah, excellent crop. You either have good taste or bought from a flower shop with a halfway-competent florist." He nods at this, before turning back to you. "In any case, Matsuda, do not let me detain you. I've quite the backlog, as I'm sure you do as well." The Incubator seems to catch your eye as you look down at the mess you've made of his desk. "Don't bother picking up after yourself, Housekeeping will take care of it. You can take your roses with you, however, as I'm sure you need them for that joke of yours."

You do so, after making sure to place the passcard of your new apartment in your inventory. Kyuubey immediately occupies his leather chair as soon as you vacate it, the mutant cat resting right on the spot where you'd sat.

...Clever little bastard.

You make to leave, but something catches at your subconscious. Something strange about the conversation you had with Kyuubey just now. You point this out to him, and the Incubator takes a few moments to respond.

"...There isn't anything to tell about Malal that I'm sure Kharn hasn't told you," He replies in his usual dulcet tones, although the faint hint of tension is there. "I refrain from speaking about her because I find that it is easier to forget." Kyuubey turns away. "I will say, however, that she was my greatest triumph as an Incubator - and at the same time, my biggest failure."

...It was that bad?

>>
>>24240026

"Is it so surprising for me to say that?" The Incubator turns towards you, blinking. "Contrary to what we usually display, Matsuda, we do have emotions of our own. We simply try to remove them from the equation as much as we can when business is at stake. When decisions need making."

Well, it's not your fault Incubators have a rap of being souless, furry little satans, then.

"Perhaps. I will dwell on that. But I am not concealing anything about Malal that you may find useful in the future, Matsuda. Trust me on that at least."

You'll try.

"I suppose that is the best I can hope for from my Warmaster. very well, Matsuda, don't let me detain you."

You nod at this, before finally leaving. Outside, Kyoko seems to be snoozing on the receptionist's chair - but she snaps awake the moment you come within five paces of her. Nearly falling off the chair doing so.

"Gwah? Ngh." Kyoko barely manages to come across as intelligible, before she shakes her head and slaps both her cheeks. "Wake up, wake up," She grumbles, before standing up, a sleepy grin baring her teeth as she sees you. "O-oh, hey, Murderface! How'd it go with the boss?" She yawns as she steps around the desk to meet you. "Just gonna report that those Golden Thingies are in your own personal lockdown vault downstairs." She gives you another passcard, this time a completely-black metal one. "Kyuubey's told me to show the place to you anytime you want to. Oh, and your new apartment, too. I'm supposed to drive you there so you know where it actually is."

"Hahaha! Sorta like that, I suppose!" Kyoko grins. "Oh, I guess I can drive you to my apartment! Sayaka's there now, if you want to get that talk with her out of the way." Polite enough to let her know she's still under our Officio's protection, but that we're not going to rush off just because she insisted.

You decide to have Kyoko take you to your personal lockdown vault for now, but after a quick detour to sick bay, to pay a visit to Midori. Kyoko grins at this, but doesn't say anything as the both of you make your way there. You earn more than your lion's share from the night shifters you pass by - it's almost like clockwork, how they glanced at you, doing a double-take - before finally gawking at the bouquet of blue roses resting on your shoulder.

Some of them blushed a full crimson, stopping right in their tracks and stuttering greetings, while others shyly asked if they could snap a photo of you. Before you could frown at them and decline, however, Kyoko had nudged the prospective photographer aside, cheerfully yet brusquely telling them that you were on important business, and that you mustn't be held up.

You asked her about this, just outside Midori's room. What was that all about?

"Huh? Oh, you know, just trying it out, being an aide kinda deal," Kyoko seems to be tickled pink at this, clearly enjoying herself. "It's the truth anyhow, isn't it? You're on important business, and it's not like we have all night for it."

Well, that's true, but--

"Ah, I don't remember you being this fussy, Murderface. Man, what'd they do to you in Siberia?" Kyoko pats your shoulder. "Come on, it's okay to relax your shoulders a bit more, you know!" It's then that she pushes you towards the door leading to Midori's room. "Now, go on, get in there, do your thing with the flowers. Do your best Murder Mayumi impersonation or somethin' - hell, just be yourself, that's accurate enough."

What? But how did she--

"Friend reads it, alongn with the rest of the freakin' Eversors," Kyoko hisses. "Now go!"

...Fine, fine. She didn't need to be so pushy.

>>24240960

You enter Midori's room quietly. She's...well, she looks alright, thankfully. You were expecting the worst - the Callidus hooked up to tubes and such. The only tube she seems to be connected to is an IV drip, and she seems to be fast asleep on her bed.

"Matsuda-sempai..." You hear her murmur in her sleep. "P-please stop teasing me..."

Well, now. It seems that Midori's having a strange dream about you.

You're pretty glad Kyoko's not around to hear this.

What do you do?

>>24240986 >>24240992 >>24241004 >>24241006

You listen to her dreaming for a bit.

It's...you wish you hadn't done that. She's tired and probably on medication, and she has no idea what's going on. Of course she's going to have weird dreams, like you holding her down and having your way with her, or stuff that involves candlewax and handcuffs and blindfolds. And really, as the person who saved you from two overlapping nightmares, she deserves better than her sempai barging in on her unguarded, vulnerable moments.

No, you did that the last time already, reading her manga beside her on the plane.

Shaking your head, you take a single rose from the bouquet - making sure that all the thorns on its stem were sheard off - and it's then that you place it on her pillow, beside her. With luck, it'd be the first thing she sees when she wakes up, and not roll over it or something.

You nod at your own handiwork, before reaching out and giving her hand - the one without the IV sticking out the back of it - a gentle squeeze. She mumbles something and returns the gesture, her grip feeble, feather-light.

You let go a moment later, and place the rest of the roses in your inventory. You slip out of the room as quietly as you can, giving the green-haired Callidus one last look before finally exiting.

Hopefully, that would be the last time you send Midori to the hospital.

Because you can't help but fear if the next time will be to the morgue.

"Ready to go?" Kyoko greets you, the Eversor seemingly having waited just outside, leaning on the wall just beside the door. "Thought you were gonna spend longer in there, to be honest."

...Midori's asleep, you tell her. It wouldn't be much point, anyway. Besides, the both of you are still on a timetable, aren't you?

"...I guess so." She shrugs. "Anyway, we can take a short cut through here. Vault's pretty much close."

[1/2]
>>
>>24241703

With Kyoko leading, you do manage to get to the vault in barely no time at all - although you did have to do a lot of corridor-cutting and such. The vault is exactly what it looks like - a huge bank vault of thick, uncompromising iron, with gears and spokes and the entire thing.

You slide the card that Kyoko gave you into the slot she points out, and it's with a heavy grind and groan of metal that the vault doors begin to carefully dismantle each other, the interconnected gears and cogs breaking apart and folding back. A heavy blast door rolls upwards, followed by another, and then another.

...Until finally, a room is revealed. One with twenty seemingly-specific weapon racks, each with their own numbered plaque burnished in gold. Each plaque sporting a roman numeral, from I to XX.

Kirika's sword is placed in the XX rack, of course. Kharn's chainaxes, the only other set of Golden Weapons in the vault, is placed in the XV rack.

"Take your time, I'll be right outside," Kyoko grins and waves, just before one of the blast doors slam down in between the both of you. You're worried about being stuck there for a second, until you see the same card input slot near the vault doors.

In any case, you're here now.

What do you do?

Shitty little dive bar. That was new. Never been much for drinking, and this sure as hell didn’t look like somewhere I’d been dragged to before. It had that kind of personal, old timey touch you can’t find in Santa Destroy. It was comforting. Warm. Maybe not pristine, with the heavy burn of old smoke and cheap liquor in the air, but…untouched. Three phantoms sat on the stools, talking and laughing in old and distorted voices, memories washed away by time. …It was easy to pick Kharn out. It’d always be easy to pick Kharn out. Next to her was Kong. Was probably a pretty old memory, she didn’t seem anything like Kong as I’d seen her. And on Kong’s other side was Malal. …I could believe that. Malal probably found this place. Serving the three of them was a reedy shadow, almost human, with a long, beaklike nose. Its eyes pulsed an eerie red as it craned its neck toward me, and we exchanged a silent nod.
…That one was mine.
My knife was in my hand in an instant – more out of habit than concern. If there was a reason to be concerned, I’d know. The floor was soundless under me as I made my way to the bar and took a seat next to ‘Kharn’. The voices didn’t get any louder or clearer, and filtering it through Japanese was a pain, but I could recognize her barking, unintelligible accent, at least.
Jumped a little when the bartender grabbed my wrist. She jumped, too, when I stabbed hers a second later. …Didn’t have the patience for their bullshit. Something was about to go down, I could feel it, and that warranted my attention a fuckload more than the same old night-to-night game of cat and asshole. The bartender’s scream filled the air, piercing and inhuman, like every other time Eversor Diplomacy had invaded my dreams, and the whole bar seemed to break apart, the memories next to me fizzling and dying. The smoky smell was replaced by an all-too-familiar rotting stench. Blood and death. With accompaniment by about a hundred flies.

Told her to get me some fucking whiskey if she wanted to stick around, and found a drink in my hand a second later. Not like it mattered. Couldn’t even get buzzed in a dream, not that I wanted to anyway. …It was pretty good whiskey, though. And the only thing the damn place seemed to have.
After a nice, long drag, I took a look at the suddenly-fucked bar. The quiet melody of the old jukebox in the corner had lapsed into eerie silence, and its cheerful light flickered, barely powered. The whole place had turned…dusty, I guess. It wasn’t natural light. Sort of like staring at the world through an old, dirty TV screen. The scuffed wood flooring wasn’t visible at all, though in clear view, as if each had its own dim spotlight, were…bodies. Corpses, lots of them.
Wish I could say I didn’t recognize a few. …It’d always be easy to pick Kharn out. There was Mickey Blueberry, with some girl in red clutching her. …Maybe she’d hugged her to death or something. And…there was also Miss Tomoe’s costume, filled out by Miss Tomoe’s chest. …Looked like her head was gone, though. Like somebody cut it off to make a statement. Sounds like something we’d do.
Or kept it as a trophy. She had a nice head, I guess.
I heard the door open about then. …But it was probably just a noise. Doubt the door there even opened. It was pretty obvious who it was just by the less-than-subtle signs her mind was giving me, but I figured I’d have to wait around until things got worse to hear from her. If she even showed at all. Kind of a nice surprise.
So I did the ladylike thing and offered to buy her a drink. I was a little relieved just to hang around someone who wasn’t completely batfuck crazy or way, way too energetic, anyway.

“Anyone can buy me a drink,” she mumbled back. Didn’t take her eyes off me for a second, like she already thought I was going to open her up. “but they should at least have the courtesy to tell me who the hell they are, and where the hell this is.”

Cheeky bitch. …Kind of reminds me of me. That probably shouldn’t be a surprise, though. I gave her my name and called the shady bartender over again.

I couldn’t help but laugh as she mumbled out her astonishment at her drink’s sudden appearance. Kid wasn’t a dreamer. Or maybe normal people don’t have dreams like this. Hell if I know.

Told her not to worry about it. Trying to figure out dream logic is probably the quickest way to give yourself a seizure, anyway. I did my best to lay it out for her – we were in one of our dreams, God knows whose. …I could tell by the way she looked that she didn’t remember me, but apparently she was to amnesia what Annie was to shitty nerd conventions. Least, that’s what they said about her. She pretty much confirmed it a second later.

It’s alright, I told her. Job’s tough on all of us. Harder than most on us. Heh. We had a little toast, to a reunion.

…Thought I caught a sweet scent in the air. Smelled like death and a flower field, and it was…fresher, somehow, than the rest of the room. Might have been the Lady poking her head in to check on her Shieldmaiden. Might have been her keeping tabs on me. …Might have just been an old, stupid memory springing up, the kind you think of whenever you meet someone like you. A fellow monster.

Warmaster Marigold asked me three questions the first day I became a magical girl. Guess she asked anyone she thought might be promising. They’re questions I answered pretty easily back then, but lately I’ve been thinking about them again. I had a hunch about the new Kong, too. Seemed like she had to sort her shit out.

Is ignoring Iori the road to her BAD END?

As for feedback, this is the first time I actually got to be in one of the threads, took me 5 days to read everything on foolz and I love this quest, it's fun to actually discuss with the people in here.

I asked her if she liked hurting people. …It was a requirement to get into the Warmaster’s Special School. She only took in a special kind of crazy bitch. Someone bloodthirsty, someone who’d come hunting for her later. Someone who would get off on it like she did. Someone who would sit and drool at the idea of carving her fucking chest open.

Yeah. I like hurting people.

…The second…Heh. The second question Marigold asked us was whether we understood flowers. I didn’t. …Always thought there might be more to it, but the only person I’d ever seen think about it was Malal. …She was like that. Ten steps ahead and five feet deeper than anyone else in the room. I remembered Kong’s phone from other dreams – little flashes of using it, struggling with a diary app. Used to be Malal’s, see. Probably set it up with a bunch of riddle bullshit. Wouldn’t be surprised if she was still trying to cover asses from way past six feet under. Yeah. I had a better question than…flowers. Least I could do, after all the time we spent in shitty dives like this one, dragging our bosses’ drunk, bleeding bodies home together.

When the Warmaster asked the third question, it was a threat. …So that’s how I asked it, too. I needed to know about her. About the Shieldmaiden, about the Blessed Lady’s Chosen One. …Needed to know if we were really just an offering for their moonlit blood-orgy hate date.

A Mexican standoff is like sex. It’s amazing when it’s happening. …Then a few minutes afterward, it’s just messy and awkward. My knife cried out as it sunk into her throat, in that special way only a weapon you’ve got a long, dirty history with can. …I was impressed at her speed. Vindicares are usually slower up close. Usually just try to put some distance between you. She really was a Warmaster, and I couldn’t help but smile as her desert eagle took out most of my head.

Wasn’t my first Vindicare Makeover in recent memory, and I could only hope it’d be my last. I could still feel it as I crashed into the jukebox, shorting the whole damn thing out. Everything was dark, and sort of wet, and the phantom pain I knew from my dreams overwhelmed my body. I tried to talk, but all that came out was a wet hiss, and as the air lightened around us, I knew she was gone.

…I managed to push myself to my feet, and that was when the jukebox started to sputter.

...pillars in the night…

I recognized Annie’s ringtone. Glanced around, though it didn’t do any good. Pretty sure another chunk of my brain fell out. It was a decidedly weird feeling, even for a dream.

…guide your way…endless trial…

Always tempt your fate with luck and a smi-

“Goddammit, how d’ya even answer this friggin’ thing?” Something soft under my head…and as I opened my eyes, I saw some big blobby looking thing with a ribbon - the design on one of Annie’s shirts. Seemed like she’d dressed down for a change.

…Felt nice, just laying there. Still felt like my head had been blown off, in a distant, airy way. I rolled over a little so I wouldn’t have to look at the weird blob thing. Sounded like she was talking with Nakajima – I could hear her giggling at Annie swearing into the phone, and her voice. Guess they needed to talk about a trip to Siberia.

Right at that moment, though, it was really hard to care. Knew I wasn’t going to fall back asleep, but I wanted to pretend a little while longer.

Yes, suptg is indeed pretty awesome, but I just can't pass up the quote preview function on foolz.

Dammit, the whole reason of sending Iori to the Lovelace Mansion was to protect her from us and of becoming a Magical Girl.

We text her that we got her message and will meet her once important Officio business is done.

Should we go over there and give her the speech?
"With kindness comes naïveté. Courage becomes foolhardiness. Furthermore, dedication has no reward. If you can't accept any of that, you are not fit to be a Magical Girl."

No, it really doesn't.

Sometimes, life is messy.
