Not only do you fail, you destroy the book completely in the process. It dissolves into grey ash in much the same way as the piece of paper you had been using as a focus. Well, shit.

Where do you go now?

i suppose we could break down in frustration over our complete incompetence
>>
>>23363513
Shrug off the ash, then go to the Lotus sanctum to make new friends.

Freerun there as afast as we can.
>>
>>23363513
Let's come back to this location later with Liz. For now, lets go to the lotus HQ.
>>
>>23363544
No. This should be somewhere that not even Liz knows about, in case she gets mind controlled. Even our allies could hypothetically be dangerous to us at some point. We want somewhere that's 100% us - MAYBE our dad if we trust the wording on the Blood Bond.
>>
>>23363513
Let's hit the Lotus Sanctum or the Library, we do need books on Enchantment and Sensory input.
>>
>>23363513
>Shrug off the ash, then go to the Lotus sanctum

Stop by the library to grab a book on golem/pet creation, then continue on to the Sanctum
>>

So let's grab dad then, we just need someone that is good at alchemy.
>>

>>23363563

>>23363513

>>
>>23363513
Time for the Lotus sanctum after library
>>
And on our way out make sure we do something clever, like leaving something leaned against the door after covering up any marks we made on the way in. That way we have a better chance of noticing if someone peeks in here before we come back.
>>
>>23363563
Liz is one hundred percent loyal to us, currently. She is ours. I do not fear her ever betraying us or being a danger to us willingly.

I do fear someone controlling her, torturing her, or reading her mind. As such I agree, this little place should be all ours, secret as much as we can make it. However I DO think we should be honest with her that we have a little bolt hole somewhere. We do not want her accidently finding out and getting angry that we are hiding things.
>>
>>23363588
Let's keep it as a personal project. I'd like us to try to do it on our own.
>>
>>23363582
This. Also maybe a book on vampire lords. Call dad before we leave the library to make sure Selene is ok before we head to the sanctum. Oh, and while we're out try to figure out just how bid dryads can get.

Wait. Fem, do we know if what I just wrote is true ? And could we work on making our mind harder to read ?
>>
>>23363666
People with stronger minds are harder to fuck with. And yes, in much the same way as you augmented yourself with Focus, you could augment yourself with Mind Protection, or some such.
>>
>>23363618
This. Keep the location secret, but have it as a project. And we can't really let our practice in warding go to the wayside just because we have Dad for the tower. Liz and Lin should each do their own as well so we have more than one secure fallback, too.
>>
>>23363666
well maybe
but she was the thrall of a vampire lord
>>
>>23363700
I agree and motion to make the cellar our Laboratory/Gym/Stowaway location. Let Liz know it exists, at most, but inform her that we need to keep it secret and to ourselves for the sake of security. If we are ever compromised, we can take everyone there, but to avoid premature compromising of the secondary hideout, its exact location shall be ours only.
>>
You head out, making a point to remember where this place is, and head off to the library. It's an uneventful trip, and you come to a stop outside the library's doors. When you walk in, the librarian asks, "Yes, what do you need?" She's less chipper and smiley now that it's been over a month since you bribed her, but she's still civil and relatively helpful.

What do you do?
>>
>>23363694
so, new long-term project. Mental Hardening, to go with all the other hardening we excel at. Work through it with both of the girls.

And if there is a "standard" method, we should practice on how to defeat it as well. Practice the lock-pick for the mental steel doors, etc.

>>23363756
Familiars for Selene come later, there's no point in making a seeing eye dog if she can't use them to see.
>>
>>23363740
Some kind of records of known dryads.

Also, ask if she has a quest for us that we could accomplish to thank her for her continued help.
>>
>>23363771
I'm pretty sure that we don't need advice for that. New paper, duct tape, ink bottle, even a different book in good condition- it's not hard to come up with foci for basically anything, and we'll look the fool for asking.

Good idea on trading in restored books to her, though.
>>
>>23363771
>Inform her that if we succeed, we'll bribe her with some of the result.

Are you seriously going to say that we might stumble upon a book that a librarian would not have read already?
>>
>>23363740
I've already voted to get a book on Enchantment and the senses, because it's both useful to us for Enchantment, and we need to grok it to teach Selene later.

But also make pleasant conversation with her, ask how her Dryad is growing.
>>
>>23363740
Hmm, time for a new bribe soon then. I doubt we'll be able to offer anything as amazing as a dryad seed again for a while.

I don't think we need to bribe the librarian yet, you know.

If we give her everything now, she won't want anything we have later when we really really need her help.

"I'm hoping for some kind of specialized book on translating sensory information from others using Enchantment."

"Hmmm. Yes, I think I have something like that. It's off near the back, though, and I'm a bit busy," she says.

Roll Soul I suppose.

To charm her in the non-sexual sense if at all possible, I really don't want Max offering sexual favours over something minor like this, it would be stupid, and set a bad precedent for future dealings where she demands more and more.
>>
>>23363911
Ask for a quest.

Get her the 100 [item]s she wants and get away.

I don't suppose she's sensitive to a warm smile.

By the way, we should really confirm that she's the only way to find the books we need here.
>>
>>23363911
Soul, we lack anything to bribe her with.

Just be friendly and pleasant and definitely do not offer any sexual favours.
>>

It's stupid to give it away now.

>>
>>23363995
>It's a renewable source of bribes, renewable in constant supply.
Our time however, is not. And once anyone gets a taste of Max Power cock, they're just gonna want more and more.
>>
>>23364019
To be fair, we could truthfully tell her that we were unwilling.
>>
>>23363911
Roll soul to make friendly conversation and win her over.

No giving the dick though.
>>
>>23364038
do you honestly think that would fly?

"Hey, I fucked the librarian, I didn't want to, but I kind of needed that book on golemcraft today for a side project I'm working on. I really had no choice."
>>
>>23363911
Apologize for not having come across a decent bribe recently, roll soul to avoid handing over our mental attack focus and avoid propositioning her. Seriously, archmagi with a wendingo dryad sets off all kinds of warning flags.
>>
>>23364038
We would be the one offering though.

Don't offer.
>>
You decide to try to sweet-talk your way into help.

"How's your dryad doing, by the way?" you as sweetly.

"She's about a week away from hatching," says the librarian, the corners of her eyes crinkling up into a little smile. "She's growing healthily, by the looks of it."

"I'm glad to hear it. I want this book for a little project for my first dryad," you say, looking her in the eyes. "Could you help me find one?"

Roll Soul to try to convince her. You get a +1 for appealing to her sympathies, so I'll consider the first five linked 1d100 rolls.
>>
>>23363911
Lets just roll soul and not fuck her now

"Well, I wouldn't say wrong," you start. "But she was born without eyes. She can echolocate, I think, but..."

"Oh. Oh, I understand completely. Here, let's see if we can't find you that book you need."

She leads you off into the back of the library, where old, valuable, specialized books are. It takes her nearly fifteen minutes of constant searching through barely-organized shelves, but eventually she finds it. Based on the first couple pages, it's an English translation of a scroll discovered in a temple in the Congo in the 1800's, and it focuses on seeing through others' eyes in a form of passive possession. At a cursory glace, the concepts it covered are exactly what you need, and then some.

"That's exactly what I needed to figure out the solution I was thinking of," you say. "Thank you so much."

"Of course. And you feel free to return it whenever you're done with it. No need to rush on this one. Was there anything else you were looking for?"

"The first is easy to find," she says, nodding. "The second, I happen to have myself. I referenced it when selecting ingredients for my own dryad."

She leads you to the shelf with the book on binding elementals into constructs - it looks well-used, and you wouldn't be surprised if some of the losers from the quiz checked it out that very day. Perhaps when both our girls have grown up a bit we could set up a playdate for them. I'm sure both Selene and your little girl would like that very much."

We'll see to that next time we come. We already have enough books to occupy our time.

We are gonna punch giant iron bells with our bear hands for training.
>>
>>23364642
To see Lotus people and do some training.

I think the books will be pretty safe inside the Lotus Sanctum's wards.
>>
"Yes, ma'am. Thank you very much for your help."

"Remember to tell me how your plan works with your little girl."

"I will."

You check out, load up on the books, which to someone less-buff than you would be quite heavy, and head for the Lotus sanctum. You arrive without issue, and have found, at this point, five different routes there, for which at least two absolutely require free running or magic. When you get in, you find that it's mostly empty, save for some of the older members milling about, talking, and meditating. Nobody's at the bells, and the students that are here all seem to be meditating. It looks like Carl is free up front, having some tea and relaxing.

What do you do now?
>>
>>23364696
If Carl is free, go talk to him, any additional advice or training we could get from the Lotus grandmaster would be great.
>>
PUNCH BELLS
>>
>>23364696
Can we talk to carl about living alchemy? After that we must train a bit in the bells.
>>
>>23364696
Talk to Carl, then we can try punching some bells later.
>>
>>23364715
>with people meditating all around
Anons, no sense of right or wrong.
>>
>>23364696
Lets go say hi to Carl.

>>23364715
We'd fuck it up and break Max's hands
>>
>>23364710

GO TO CARL! Ask him for tips on sorcery.

Explain that we can kind of naturally sense the energy flows between people, but that we're having a hard time actually grasping the bridge between something we can do instinctively and something we can shape consciously.

Also, explain the eye situation to him, and see if he has any tips for maybe growing selene some eyes. He's a -grandmaster- after all.

But yeah if carls free, hit up up for advice.
>>
>>23364696
Put our books somewhere safe, and go talk to the older people.
Or should we wait for someone to introduce us ? I'm not very good with social conventions.
>>
>>23364696
Talk to Carl, see if we can have a nice relaxing cup of tea with him.

>>23364728
We're a probationary member, nobody gets taught Living Alchemy until their second year.

>>23364715
We are nowhere near durable for that shit.
>>
>>23364751
I think aside from a general degree of politeness, it's okay.

Carl seemed to find it funny when we did all the bowing and calling him Grandmaster last time we were here.
>>
>>23364751
In a lot of societies it'd be more complicated, this is Lotus. All members are considered students following the path and are expected to aid and teach those less advanced, all are students and teachers.

So as long as we don't make an ass out of ourself we can pretty much talk to anyone here we want.
>>
>>23364754
>We are nowhere near durable for that shit.

Nah, Femcock kinda implied it when we trained on a punching bag that it was too easy, so we should train on something harder.
>>
>>23364696
say hello to The Grand master and bow if he offers us to sit and talk chat about tea
>>
>>23364774
If I remember correctly FemCOCK said the Success Threshold for Ringing Dem Bells was 3 successes. We may very well break our hand.
>>
>>23364696
Talk to Carl, see if he knows a way to partition our mind so that we can be in a state of constant meditation while going about our daily life.
>>
>>23364743
If you can't meditate through something as peaceful and tonal as a ringing bell, you suck at meditating.
>>
>>23364792
>If I remember correctly FemCOCK said the Success Threshold for Ringing Dem Bells was 3 successes. We may very well break our hand.

But we have sorcery now! We can amplify our melee strikes! And go all SHINING FINGER on those bells.
Also, we *should* be able to CastFist with foci, too, right?
>>
>>23364744
>>23364754
We could just hit them with increasing strength, and stop when we start to feel pain.
No need to go all out on the first punch and break our hand.

You sit down with Carl. He already had a cup of tea poured for you, like he knew you were coming. "How has the first month been going for you, Max?" he asks, giving you a smile. He takes a sip of his tea. You follow suit.

"It's been going well. I'm securing my first sanctum, starting to refine my body, and working on a few side projects," you say.

"That's good. I hope you're finding enough time to stop and enjoy yourself. It sounds like you're very busy."

"I'm finding time to relax and spend with the people I care about," you confirm. "Especially now that I don't need to sleep as much."

"That's very good," he agrees, giving you a warm, peaceful smile. "Was there something you wanted help with, or do you just want to talk?"

What do you say?
>>
>>23365077
Well I say a year including the time it takes to have the dryad ready to help.

Besides, I just read on wikipedia that the best tea comes from trees that grow slowly (due to altitude), and concentrate more flavor that way.
>>
>>23365150
Talking seems fine.
I was indeed busy the first month, and now I'd like to take the time to get to know more people.
>>
>>23365150
Ask him about his time as the society head and life at the school.
>>
>>23365150
Talk to him about Alchemy, how we've been doing with it, what we're struggling with, if he has any suggestions for improvement.
>>
>>23365150
Huh, why don't we ask him what he thinks we need help with.
This guy seems like he knows some shit.
>>
>>23365150
"I just wanted to talk. I have my life pretty well in hand. Though if you have any advice about anything I would gladly accept it.

I actually have a daughter now, grew a dryad, cutest little girl in the whole world."

Talk some, chat about what it's like being the Master of Lotus, what his time as school was like. And maybe see if we can get some pointers for Alchemy, he's almost certainly VERY good at it.
>>
>>23365159
>from trees that grow slowly (due to altitude), and concentrate more flavor that way.
Wait, reading further, it actually is the harvested leaves that must grow slowly (two weeks better than one), not the tree itself.

And a normal tree takes three years of growth before being ready for plucking.

Do Max and the rest have access to wikipedia here ?

"I mostly just wanted to talk," you say. "And ask if you have any advice, what it was like to become Lotus grand master, that kind of thing."

"Sure, Max. My advice is simple. Your life doesn't stop passing you by and the world doesn't stop turning just because you're in here. The Scholomance is big and dangerous and powerful, but if you ignore the world, you don't have any guarantee that the world will ignore you," he say before taking another sip. "As for what it was like? It wasn't worth it. Between what it took to graduate and the new responsibilities it got me, it wasn't worth the power and privilege I got. Most archmagi don't see it that way, but... Well, if I knew then what I know now, I would have stopped in the fifth circle."

You frown. That kind of advice leaves you feeling vaguely uncomfortable, like it knocked you off balance.

"Now, I have a question for you, Max. What's your plan? Once you're done here, what do you want to do? What will be waiting for you outside these walls once you're done?"

What do you say?

>>
>>23365481
I think he's probably one of the few people we could actually admit our plan to, about founding a different magic school, one which isn't so psychotic.
>>
>>23365509
That... might be a good idea. But we should ask him if he can keep a secret first. It sounds like he's not happy here.
>>
>>23365481
Dang.. The Dude is deep.

Well, we have our mum, and dad if he wants to come up out of the caves. We take the skills we are able to scrap together, take our girls and found a new kind of place of learning. With less battle royale, with help from Liz if she is willing to set aside the tippy-top heights of power and all the jazz.
>>
>>23365481
"I was planning on probably leaving of my own accord around fifth or sixth circle. One of my...friends is dead-set on becoming an Archmage, though. I figured I'd stick around as a non-student and see what I can manage to do to sway it in their favor. After that point, I want to have the option to bug out of here as soon as possible. I don't think spending my life in this place is the best usage of my time."
>>
>>23365509
That's what makes Scholomance so great.. survival of the fittest. The world isn't all cupcakes and ice cream. Besides, everyone has the right to leave at any time..
>>
>>23365481
"The week before I got to school changed my life in huge ways- and the time since I arrived has opened up new options and gave me concerns that I had never even dreamed of before. Based on that, it feels like whatever I say right now about what I want to do will end up seeming impractical, or kind of silly, in another couple months."
>>
>>23365481
Same thing that was waiting for me before. Except that I will no longer have to take part in the daily, half-a-century-long drudgery most humans are condemned to.

I have no great ambitions. I don't think I will understand what I want to do with power before I have it, like you do.

Are you the actual reason why most Lotus don't continue after the fifth year ? Do you offer an alternate regimen of learning, that lets them avoid the required loneliness and sacrifices of the final years ?
>>
>>23365509
Yeah. I figure we don't start out as a direct rival to Schoolomance, as that sounds like a good way to get killed. Start off as a kind of community collage, and grow our talent from within. And by recruiting capable 4th+ circle teachers.
>>
>>23365481
Well (thinking of Liz, Selene and dad), with any luck some of what I'm waiting for is actually here with me now, and that certainly helps me enjoy my life as I'm living it. I'm really lucky in that.
>>
>>23365481
I haven't really thought much about it ...

>>
>>23365561
It's not a school. Its a self perpetuating Magistracy. It produces great archmages but is really bad at helping less capable or ruthless students succeed.
>>
>>23365633
This. It's basically a quarantine zone that facilitates psychotic student development.
>>

take all the magic-capable kids you can find, when still somewhat young, and feed them into a system that quietly encourages bloodthirsty behavior with the Archmagi at the very top BUT not assailable directly. Creating a system where you must become them, not replace them.

One of the characters, called Caligula, was saying something that impressed me.
It was something to that effect
"I am not insane.
I just suddenly felt a need for the impossible. This world, it seems to me, is not bearable.
So I need the moon, or happiness, or immortality, something insane maybe, but something that is not of this world"
I felt the same... but I had something out of this world. That's why I came to this school.
I want the moon.
>>
>>23365667
>>23365699
Yes. Which is why challenging it directly is a terrible idea. Because they will murder you. Instead, you should create a school that accepts Schoolomance dropouts and teaches them as best it can while removing any incentive to back-stab and replacing them with powerful disincentives. If you have a few archmages supporting you at the start and are backed by enough 4th and 5th circle mages to provide a teaching staff we should be able to get going.

"I'm not entirely sure yet," you admit. "I'm planning on dropping out in the fifth or sixth circle - one of my friends wants to be an archmage, and I'm determined to get her there. After that, I don't know, maybe settle down, maybe form a school for magic that's less... Well, less evil."

"Well, it's good that you have plans," he says. "If you try to teach others, though, take care not to make yourself seem like a threat to the archmagi. That would only end badly. Aside from that, tell Elizabeth what I said about becoming an archmage."

Huh. He knows Liz's name? "Speaking of that. Is that why the Lotus encourages people to drop out half-way through school? Do you keep teaching them here so that they don't need to continue with the Scholomance?"

"That's one of the reasons," he says calmly. He gives you an approving smile. "One of a few."

"Why is the Scholomance designed like this? So deadly, so evil? I mean, the archmages it produces are the best, but the cost... Why?"

"If you want. Make sure to share with the other Lotus members, though. Some of them have a somewhat more refined palate than me."

"Do you have any advice on what to study next?"

"It might be a good idea to start protecting that mind of yours and keep people from teleporting anything out of - or into - your body. Aside from that, it's never too early to start slowing down your aging," he says with a little wink.

Ask him about the limits of regen.

Ask him if we can self enchant to be able to live through what would normally be mortal wounds, like walking around with a big hole blown in our chest like it's nothing. Not sure what to word that as. Ability to sustain damage without incurring death?

It would stack nicely on top of steelskin and forcefields.
>>
>>23366698
Insane, certainly. But it had some pretty sweet architecture.
>>
>>23366706
>Taking lethal damage without dropping dead
You're looking for something like a Second Wind or plain old Invulnerability.
>>
>>23366706
I think another option to stack on those would be a reactive short range teleportation.

If something is coming at us that is too powerful for our defences, it automatically teleports us a little ways away.

You hit the bell. You don't break your fist, don't sprain your wrist, nothing like that. But it barely makes a sound, and certainly not that deep, resonant chime that they normally make when the older students are hitting them. You look around, trying to gauge whether or not you should feel embarrassed, but nobody's really paying attention to what you're doing.

It looks like you have a lot of room for improvement, at any rate.

Only mind rolls involving long-term concentration, like studying and meditation. Magic rolls involving that too, like in self-enchantment. Just like how your boosted strength and durability didn't give a bonus to stealth. If you want a bonus die for this type of thing, it would be a good idea to focus on boosting your senses.
>>
>>23368832

You manage to keep track of the person you're following, despite the distance you're keeping. Eventually, after a few long minutes of this and a few close calls, they get to what you think is their destination. They stop at a brick wall and look around; you duck behind a wall before they can spot you. The person then presses their hand against the wall, which then folds back, one brick at a time, revealing a narrow passage way in.

They start heading in.

What do you do?

Yeah, fuck that. You've already put yourself at enough risk just coming this far. You're not going to follow someone into what you presume is their sanctum without proper preparation. You book it out of there, having a nice, hard, round-about run to both get in a good workout and throw off any potential tails you might have picked up from that. By the time you get back home, you've worked up a nice light sweat.

When you go in through the door, Liz is holding Selene and pacing back and forth. "There you are," she says as you enter. "Selene bit Breakfast in the hand. Breakfast is fine, but she freaked out and make Selene freak out too. I just managed to get her calmed down, and last I checked, your dad was trying to get Breakfast to stop crying up in the sitting room."

Selene clicks a few times, then holds out her arms to be picked up by you.

And that's where we're ending it for tonight.
>>

We don't know who that was, what circle they are, what society they're in, what the location actually is, or how it's protected. Your whole body is somewhat tougher. Enough tougher to give you a +1 on all body rolls where having a tougher body would be helpful. And yes, it does mean they, unless they use needles that are sufficiently reinforced and apply a huge amount of force, comparatively speaking. This is one of the reasons why, after a certain point, most Lotus will start adjusting their healing rate/effectiveness and boosting their immune systems.
