Last time, on DragonBall Z:
Two Dwarfs entered the Caverns of Quasqueton in search of treasure. They encountered a pair of barbarians, and then a trio of gnolls. The dwarves were particularly fascinated by dead ends, and spent a significant amount of time studying walls and doors that lead to nowhere. But then, they discovered a room full of building materials and rotting tools, hastening the progress of the Honey Pot by 200gp. Finally, they stumbled upon Roghan's weight room, filled with trapezoidal lead weights and mundane exercise equipment. Nothing was hidden under the rug.

And now, Dwarfs Stare At Walls continues...

Lolth was always a giant demon spider named Lolth. She's Lloth to Drow, and Lolth to everyone else. She hasn't fundamentally changed from her first appearance, except in that player's are less likely to fight her directly, during a dungeon crawl.

So, what do you want to do? The northwest corner and second level of the Caverns of Quasqueton are still to be cleared, the third level of Castle Gygar is mostly unexplored, and the neanderthals apparently know of ruins where ghouls lurk.

I'm good with whatever. If we have enough people, tackling Castle Gygar would be good, or possibly checking out the ruins in the forest.

I know me and Fig are here, but I'm not sure who else are here.
>>
Looks like just the two of you for now then. Finishing off the Caverns is probably the best bet.
>>
>>21685690
Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. When the others show up/new people join, we can tackle the new place, or possibly Gygar.
>>
So where do you want to go? Explore the northwest area or take one of the entrances down to the second floor?
>>
>>21685705
good news is, if we find magic loot, they can't have it! J/K we'll probably redistribute
>>
>>21685735
Northwest area sounds good to me, the one by the library maybe?

Alvaro has his lantern lit, and has Cure Light Wounds at ready, as per usual. He has brought both retainers.
>>
>>21685795
Okay. You head to the door just west of the library entrance and go through it. To the south is an area already explored, with the kobolds and a hole to the lower levels. Just north of you is a door, and there's a path east which turns north after 20 feet

Alvaro listens at the door, after the R.L.D says its not a terrible idea to approach it. 1d6, yeah? Something came up and I'll be gone for about ten minutes, hopefully less. Just bot me til I get back.
>>
>>21685865
Yep, d6. You hear nothing behind the door, which is a well made oak door with an untarnished brass handle. Unlike other doors, it's in perfect condition, not rotted or damaged in any way
>>
>>21685896
>perfect condition
Any keyholes? I'll gingerly touch the handle to see if it's hot/cold/zappy
>>
>>21685932
No keyholes. The handle doesn't feel unusual, and you don't think touching it did anything bad
>>
>>21685945
Alvaro ponders the door.

How much space separates it from the ground? Enough to look, or perhaps see if any light is on the other side if I extinguish my lantern?
>>
>>21685968
It's flush with the sides, and if you extinguish the lantern you won't see any light from underneath it
>>
>>21685980
"Suppose we were just over cautious." Alvaro mutters, shrugging. "Shall we continue on then?"
>>
>>21684291
New to the thread. Lemme read up on what's happened in the past 20 posts then get to business.
>>
>>21685980
>>21686004
And also Otab was there
>>
>>21686021
Cool. Looks like my dude managed to meet up with the party off-screen.

"Looks like it's down to business. Hi. I'm Otab, I'm an adventurer. These are my two dogs, Trapfinder II and Trapfinder IV. I came here because I heard there were dungeons to explore, and loot to acquire."

Official backstory: Otab was a dude in a relatively peaceful city that happened to stick around in a magic academy long enough to learn how to 'adventure'.
He then pestered the crap out of everyone, trying to learn where to find places to get 'phat lewt' and 'xp'. As he was essentially just a hobo at this point, and was annoying people with his constant hobo-ing of taverns, a well trained bard used Glibness to bluff Otab into thinking there was some 'lewt and xp' over in this area, and Otab critfailed his sense motive.
Otab immediately packed up his shit and headed on out.
>>
>>21686021
And maybe Echo? Where's he hiding?
"Not a fan of the odd numbers, are ye, lad?"
>>
>>21686093
Start with the usual. Torch in left hand, Right hand free to grab a dagger/oil flask and throw it.
Dogs are Guard dogs that will try to put themselves between my glorious 4hp and anything trying to lower that 4hp.

Have I managed to stash my stuff with the group's stash, or not yet?

"Hey, so I heard you guys were setting up a honey farm somewhere. Is it safe to store some supplies there?"
>>
>>21686093
"Alvaro, cleric of the cult of the sun, at your service. These would be my retainers, Ileen and Brandon." Alvaro gave a short bow, as did his retainers.
>>
>>21686158
Nice to meet ya. Can you tell me some stuff about the dungeon we're in at the moment?

[We have a Cleric and a Dwarf with us. I'll try to march in the middle of the group if possible.]

[I'll keep my Lantern fueled and on, unless stated otherwise. Removing 1 Oil and 1 Food from my inventory now]
>>
>>21686204
"Well 'ere once was 'is magick'er an' fighter wot were grand explorers. 'ey dug out 'is cavern fer 'ere retoirement an 'unnert years ago or summat an' 'ave since disappeared. Fair game now, Oi suppose."
>>
>>21686204
Ah, I forgot to say. Every time anyone goes through the entrance, these two voices say "WHO DARES ENTER THIS PLACE AND INTRUDE UPON THE SANCTUARY OF ITS INHABITANTS? ONLY FOOLHARDY EXPLORERS DOOMED TO CERTAIN DEATH! WOE TO ANY WHO PASS THIS PLACE, THE WRATH OF ZELLIGAR AND ROGAHN WILL BE UPON YOU!"
>>
>>21686242
Otab is visibly happy at the prospect of LOOT.

Otab, upon hearing about the wrath of Zelligar and Rogahn, hears only "THERE IS XP HERE", and is happy at that too.

The Trapfinders are probably a bit agitated by the shouting but can't find a target, so they calm down after a bit.
>>
>>21686243
Have we ever heard them say "Welcome home Mister Boots?"
>>
>>21686204
"Killed some monsters, fought the dark, found some valuables, got lost in a maze a few times. Nothing that pressing to warn you about, although that's because we don't know of it. Well, there is that portcullis trap that we don't have accounted for yet."

>>21686271
They would say "Mister Fuzzyboots" actually.
>>
>>21686271
No, not yet
>>
>>21686283
Where do you guys stash your valuables?
I got a bunch of stuff I can't carry with me 'cause it's heavy, and right now it's ... not exactly in a secure location.

Otab told the group about his LOADS OF OIL.
>>
So anyway, there's still that door, and to the east a path that turns north
>>
>>21686301
"Well, I mostly just carry everything I have. Practitioners of the sun, or at least crusaders, tend to travel a lot, so we don't usually own more than what we can carry."
>>21686288
I'm in favor of going through the door, never leave rooms unattended and all that. Darkness hides behind every rock.
>>
>>21686332
door please?
>>
>>21686332
Which way's the party headed? I'll stick with them.
>>
>>21686301
Most of our excess is stashed at the "Dwarven Exchange".
>>
>>21686338
The room within is 30 feet by 20 feet and you're entering at the southwest corner. The floor is a strange geometric pattern of coloured stone. If it's purely decorative, the designer had strange tastes.
>>
>>21686350
Otab wishes to know what would be required of him to move his stuff over there. Where's the Dwarven Exchange?

>>21686380
Otab sends Trapfinder II forward into the dark, and also prods around with the 10ft. Trapfinder IV stays to guard.
>>
>>21686393
Your dog survives, and your prodding doesn't set off any pressure plates or tripwires
>>
>>21686380
Alvaro inspects the strange pattern and stones, to see if he can glen anything from it.
>>
>>21686425
Otab pets Trapfinder II.
Otab stands guard at the door with the dogs in case anything comes from behind while the other two search.

You and Otab certainly recognise them as magical, but you can't tell exactly what it is they do

Otab, you know how the map shows a path to the south, and a second one going east to a door? Those are gone now. There's a dead end 20 feet away from the door

Indeed Captcha, this is nonsense. Where did the other paths go?
>>

>>
>>21686572

>>
>>21686574

>>21686584

Going down the path and turning north, there's a side path going east in front of you, and after 10 feet turning south. On the north wall of that path, Fig'Tard spots a secret door.
On the path you're on, 20 feet ahead it turns west
>>
>>21686592
Alvaro follows Otab as he goes out to explore. "Best not be wondering alone here, nasty dark machinations are at work here, and we're in the middle of it."
>>
>>21686620
Hang on, side path going east? Doesn't that overlap with something?
Fig'Tard, what does your Stone sense [OOC: Map] say about the surrounding area?

Secret door, eh? I'll empty a vial of oil on the floor at that door, then open it.
>>
>>21686657
I also tell the group about the Floor Oil, so that they don't attempt to doorjam if anything big and beefy comes through.
Nothing quite like fire to ward off enemies.
>>
>>21686657
Yeah, it's strange isn't it.
I've rolled Fig'Tard's stonecunning and underground navigation skills, and those are the directions he thinks it is
>>
>>21686708
That's even more disconcerting. Alvaro watches Otab open the secret door, ready for anything to exit.
>>
>open it
missed that
It's a 20 foot by 20 foot room. In one corner is a pile of rubble, and in another are four gold rods. They're probably worth 30gp each.
>>
>>21686708
After the path turns from East to North, and I stand at that corner, how many feet forward do I walk until the path to my east is directly to my east? 10ft?

The west path seems normal. I don't look into it though, busy with door.
>>
>>21686732
Check the gold rods for magic (curses).
I poke the rubble with the 10ft. If poking with the 10ft yields nothing unexpected I have Trapfinder II search it.

The passage continues further than your light or Fig'Tard's infravision can reach
>>
>>21686763

Seems Figgy's asleep. Who's carrying these bars, you or me?
I put the 4 gold bars in one of my sacks, and ask if Alvaro wants to carry it. If he doesn't, I will.

Then, I suppose we're heading up that Western path. Alv, you want my dogs to take point or will one of your retainers do so?
>>
>>21686977
Having a dog take point would be good. When it comes to carryable loot, its sort of Schrodinger's loot. No one and everyone one is carrying it at the same time, unless its too heavy for only one to carry. We split it up in a share for each PC, and half a share for retainers. Three PCs, two retainers means that treasure is being split four ways, as dogs are dogs and don't get shares except in food.
>>
>>21686950
The path goes west for 40 feet before turning to the right.
Fig'Tard feels strange, like there's something off. Specifically, he rationally knows the path's going west but deep down, he feels utterly certain that you're headed south.
After the turn south (or east, as Fig'Tard feels) there's a small 20 foot long area to your left, parallel to the path. The south (or maybe east) path only goes for 20 feet itself before coming to a T intersection.
>>
>>21687040
A west path that turns right heads north, DM. Are you fucking with our character's senses of directions or was that a DM snafu?
>>
>>21687051
>>21687040

I set Trapfinder IV on point. Good Dog.

And, the path that's going west - does it turn left (the path then goes south), or turn right (the path then goes north)?
Please let the reply be something other than "Roll spot" ... "you don't know".
>>
>>21687093
Yes, you're correct. I meant to say left that first time. I was mistaken
>>
>>21687051
>>21687093
I thought the same thing, but the second part was actually about the first part. The third part is about the turn.

Does Alvaro feel anything odd, being a cleric of the sun, besides the usual of not being in the sun?

Alvaro looks down both different ways of the intersection, trying to see where they lead without going down them.
>>
>>21687118
To the left there's a dead end after 10 feet. To the right the path goes on for 20 feet before making another turn right

Alvaro doesn't feel anything unusual.

>>21687194
There's a rotting corpse. Its index finger is worn down past the first knuckle, and all over the walls and floor are scrawled in blood the words "no way out"
>>
>>21687214
No, it's parallel to the other path (which you have going south)
The bit overlapping the room should be in that empty space instead
>>
>>21687217
"..."

Alvaro inspects the corpse, seeing if there is anything on it that might explain what the hell is going on. Ileen is unfazed by the sight, but Brandon is inching away from it, wishing he was somewhere else.
>>
>>21687217
I clean the word "no" off, and sit the corpse so it's pointing (from my direction) Southeast.
So the ending now reads "way out" and has a corpse pointing southeast.
>>
>>21687246
It has a dagger with a broken tip, now rusted and unusable, but nothing else

>>21687284
Oh. Roughly how long? If it's going to take long enough to force resting I unroll the bedroll. Might as well do it anyway - don't need any of this grim "No way out" shit.

No, join the insanity.
>>
>>21687316
No. But you might want to wait for these guys to find their way out
>>
>>21687311
I'll do it then. Don't need any of this grim no hope shit.
Anyone who comes in after us will see the signs saying "way out" and the corpse or skeleton pointing the way we went.
At the very least it'll confuse the heck out of anyone why a guy's dead in a corner when he knows the way out.

When I'm done, I follow Alvaro, if he's moved.

Alvaro, if you're moving, leave a marked trail for Otab to follow.
>>
>>21687303
"If you truly wish to do that, I guess I won't stop you." Alvaro shrugged, giving a soft laugh at the idea. "I'll wait for you, seeing as I don't think I'll be wondering these paths alone. I would ask though, that if we find the way out, we return for him, so that he can get a proper burial. I could give him a burial here though, although it would be one from my customs, not all approve of such."
>>
>>21687388
Well, I'll be busy for a bit, turning our "no way out" into a way out.
I'm fine with burial rites for the dead, as long as he doesn't have any Loot on him. ... is it a him? Could be a her. Either way, as long as no loot gets lost, it's fine by me.

[Adventurer logic: Trying to create/spawn a way out]

I resupply, restock honey for myself and my two goblins, and then prepare to join up when least suicidal.

>>
>>21687428
>>21687436

Don't worry, I have about a full waterskin and a week's worth of food. I'll be fine. Probably.

Otab, Alvaro, Fig'tard and their retainers and dogs head on down the path. Turning right, they see that after 20 feet there's a door to the right, looking a lot like the door to that strange room. The path also turns left there.

Looking left, you see a path going on further than your light reaches. There's also a path, parallel and adjacent to the one you were just on, which leads to a door after 30 feet.

Past the door, the room looks exactly the same as the first strange room, with the odd pattern on the floor. It's 30 feet by 20 feet, and you're entering from a corner

Jenai is paranoid about any and all underground labyrinths. Acquiring enough iron provisions for a month, he purchases several bundles of twine and loads them onto his goblin bodyguard's back before heading in.

Jenai will rely on Sergeant Vice's nose and any markers left to reach the group, but he will also leave his own markers using twine, dagger etchings, and loose stones if need be.

>>
>>21687791
PUZLSOLVD.

Yo Alvaro, let's poke around this dead end for secret doors and stuff. I'd say we're back in Kansas again.

Do I get XP for figuring that out or no? I suppose no.

> Why would they build two teleporting rooms so close together though? As a test?
Obviously there's something they're trying to hide.

As for no escape guy, probably kept walking the same route, not realising what he was doing.
>>
>>21687840
Did figuring it out get you any treasure? Because that's the main way to get XP in this game
>>
>>21687864
Well I ... I guess we got those gold bars? but ...
Oh well. 120gp of gold bars. Split between 3 of us that's 40gp each.

IC I don't know where Jenai is, and I don't have an IC reason to go back to the library. Alvaro, you make the next move.
>>
>>21687886
If Jenai opens the door, Sgt Vice can easily track you
>>
>>21687840
You only get XP for killing stuff, and looting stuff.

Loot/Loot Xp is split when we head to town.

Anyway, heading down the path we haven't gone down yet sounds like a plan. Jenai should probably find us easily with Vice in her party.
>>
>>21687899
Er, which path is that? Can you mark it on the map somehow?
>>
>>21687916
I don't think any are actually unexplored here. There are some kobolds south who for some gold guided you into the lower levels, and to the south east near the throne room are some stairs down there too.
>>

That one path we never went down. The one that heads towards the dead end, above the library, which is that room that looks like a plus with a ring around it in your last map.
>>

I would like to say that, as a player, I cannot exactly understand what rolling an 8 means - does it mean that Jenai KNOWS for certain there are no traps?

Whereas when he rolls a 50, he isn't sure there are any?

because I don't want to Meta.

In any case, for ease of goings on, I open the door and Sergeant Vice begins to track.
>>
>>21687949
According to LL, no matter the roll you are positive that there are either no traps/sounds, or traps/sounds only if you actually find them.
>>
>>21687560
>Thank you Jenai!
>>
>>21687947
The dead end as you immediately come out of the room after teleporting? I don't think that leads anywhere though I do think we should poke around in it for secret doors.
>>
>>21687949
It's hard to say. As an aside, I like how Megatraveller deals with this, having "uncertain" tests rolled by both the DM and player. If both fail, it's failed, if both pass, it's passed, and if one fails and one passes you get a half truth.
So even if you roll high or low, you can't be sure the DM is giving you the whole truth, or entirely misleading you

>>21687949
Sgt Vice leads you through some paths north, past a corpse surrounded by scrawls of "WAY OUT", and to Alvaro, Fig'Tard, Brandon, Ileen, and a magic user with two dogs you don't recognise.

Fresher down there."

Maze sounds good. I mean I can map.
Need to go back to town though to buy some things. If I got 40gp, I'm spending 15gp on a waterproof case, a stack of 10 parchment, a quill, an inkpot, 4 waterskins, 2 oil flasks and 1 travel ration to replace the one I used.
The other 25gp I keep on me in case of wanting to buy something. I doubt the town here sells Guard dogs.

>>
>>21688326
"Zombies. We've only found skeletons up here, so zombies were a first and probably points to the source of where they come from."

2gp case
2gp parchment
0.1gp quill
4gp 4 waterskin

The exit is an open pathway out. Behond it is a 30' by 20' room. There is a door to the east from it, and two tunnels leading away, a 30 foot one southwest to a cave chamber, and a long one heading southeast then turning eastward.

The north wall was apparently left unfinished, but shows the two together: shaking hands as young men, defeating the barbarians, and gesturing towards the hill out of which this stronghold was carved

Alvaro opened up his lantern, letting light spill into the room. "Much better." He said to himself as he inspects the... Now oiled statues. Anything he can glen as a cleric, both magical and anatomical?
>>
>>21690733
Leod looks on approvingly, and sets up with Krago and his guard dogs to defend themselves if (when?) the statues suddenly come to life. Though with a healthy distance away so they don't get set on fire too, obviously.
>>
>>21690780
Did we close the two secret doors behind us?
Bat's can't open doors. It'd be good to have both of them closed, so we don't suddenly get flanked by bats.
>>
>>21690777
Nothing more than I've already told you.
>>
>>21690736
Jenai eyes the dwarf, mouth twitching

"You want to know more .. about their chests?
Those rumors of dwarf women being rare must be more true than I thought."
>>
>>21690804
Also, you guys heard of a thing called a Mimic?
Once we're done checking traps, stonesensing, detecting magic and whatnot, I'd like to hit the chests from afar with an arrow or a dagger.
NOT OIL due to possibility of inflammable loot.
>>
Actually, come to think of it, should we just say screw it and start hacking the statues to pieces before touching the treasure?

>>21690822
Leod very carefully hides a smile as Krago stares- just stares- at Jenai.
>>
>>21690830
The treasure chests do not react to being hit with daggers
>>
>>21690834
The way I see it, it's worth firing a single arrow or throwing a single dagger at one.

If they attack us? We kill them.

If not? These are VERY WELL MADE STATUES. We can sell 'em. They're ... a bit slippery at the moment, but we can sell 'em.

>>

I get my Daggers back then.

Well. Who's gonna be the lucky sod what gets to open up the chest?
>>
>>21690834
I say yes. No reason not to, unless they could fetch a good price. I mean, we were warned that there was magical guardians for the treasure beyond the bat cave. This is treasure, there are magical wax statues. I'd just suggest burning them though.

As, we move them into the passage way between the two secret doors, close the door to the bats, chuck a torch at them, and close the door to the room their in.
>>
>>21690821
Wasn't there gold on the ground?

Figgy gets a-countin.

"Rest o' it be up to ye, lads, but 'ose statues be guardians so said the kobolden. Take care with 'ose chests."
>>
>>21690852
You don't detect any traps here
>>
>>21690866
There's a lot of gold, probably over a hundred. You couldnt just count by looking at it

Rolled 16

>>21690863
Easy lad. I'd wait until we're done in this room before we piss off the bats. Might need to retreat that way later.

Plus, if we wait until we're all on the same page, we got a good .... 4 people and 5 retainers of oil. We can throw 8 oil pots, 1 torch, and close the door as a readied action. Deal with the statues first though.

I get in a defensive position, hurl a dagger at one of the statues.
>>
Rolled 15

>>21690899
Also I'd better check to see if the one I threw at the chest mulched. (mulches on a 1, right?)

We shouldn't chance using fire in the treasure room though, might burn something valuable. And us.

Could be illusionary coins.

It's just that some coins are covering others. You'd have to move them around, maybe sort them into piles to count them

My bad for not clarifying.

>>
>>21690869
"Ha, this room's clean fellas!" DM, what say you take over the trap detecting rolls for me? This way I can die in peace knowing I wasn't metagaming.

Jenai peers around, then pulls out his arrows and prepares to shoot a wax statue.

"What if they're people trapped in there? Let's poke it with a stick. And YOU!"

Jenai turns to Krago for a minute "Quit it."
>>
>>21690927
I see what you're getting at.

Figgy notices the dagger and turns around.

"lads y've got t' do it roight..."

He draws his sword and proceeds to deface the wax statues by slicing off their nipples and privates and noses. Then he goes to slice off their fingers, and jam them up each others' arses.
>>
>>21690927
Mulched = no longer usable.

Well, I get my dagger back.

Fucked if I know. The statues are magic but they don't react to anything.

So who's gonna pick up the gold and open the chest?

I get my back to a corner, preferably a corner away from the statues, and get my dogs in front of me.

Only thing left to do now is pick up all the phat loot I suppose.
>>
>>21690959
Lol dwarves.
>>
>>21690932
Nah, its fine. I was just suggest moving the statues into the room above us, where we can completely shut it. That statues on fire shouldn't bother the bats if we shut both doors to that room.

>>21690959
"Uh... If you wanted them broken, I could of done that." Alvaro hefts his war hammer, taking a swing at one of the statues heads.
