    >Alright, let's try this again.

As far back as you can remember, you've always been scared of the dark. You were always a bright child. You knew, somewhere far back in your mind, that there was no possible way monsters and the like could exist. But as soon as the lights dimmed and your bedroom door closed, your overactive imagination took over. In every corner there were ghosts, under every piece of furniture creatures with long limbs looking to snatch you up. Your closet not only harbored clothing and the odd stuffed animal, but terrifying shades that seemed almost too large to exist in their small confines. Sights that were once comforting in the day time became horrifying mutations in the low light. So then, the time set aside to rest your body for the next day became a weary marathon of light slumber and frightening awakenings, and no amount of pleading to your guardians could save you from another night alone.

Things didn't get much better from there. Something made those dreadful apparitions begin to appear during the day time. Not when anyone was near, mind you, but always when you were peacefully alone. They would arise in the corner of your eye, only to vanish the moment you turned their way. Vampires, trolls, skeletons, zombies...you had seen them all in cartoons and film, but the versions that made themselves known were unlike anything you had ever seen before. The lack of sleep only furthered your exasperation, and you eventually collapsed one day at school.

With the smothering darkness came something of a reprieve, broken at moments by doctors in white coats and your guardians' worried faces. You were lost in this world of darkness for what seemed an eternity as the world continued to spin underneath you. Voices swirled through the ether in your mind, familiar at first but then foreign and unrecognized. They seemed to argue about you, what should be done, two vastly different prerogatives mixed with insults and laughing.

Then one day, you just woke up. Sunlight filtered through your tired eyes, first slowly and then in a furious flood. Something about the light was...different. It somehow darker than the sun you were used to, a deep orange-red in color instead of white. It seemed to shed no heat, and something inside of you shuddered as you finally sat up and took it all in. You were on a small hill, barren except for a few sprigs of wilted weeds. The wind swirled and tore them up from the roots, spreading their useless remains across a landscape that matched the pattern you saw on your hill.

This was moments ago. You hear two quiet voices arguing with each other, the nuances of their speech similar to what you heard as you slept in darkness.

But, first things first, what kind of child are you?

The two voices continue to argue as they crest the hill, floating six feet above the ground instead of walking. They seem to be complete opposites of one another. Tall and short, thin and fat, high pitched and lowered voices...it's almost comical. You think at first that they don't notice you as they continue to flit around in the air, yelling obscenities at each other in-between trying to make the best argument for their causes. As they near you, the arguing intensifies but the flying stops, and they hang in the air above you. Every now and again they make gestures to where you sit, using nouns like “that kid” or “the child” as if you had no say in their disagreement while still being the main focus. They'll probably continue on like that until you intervene, but you could also just walk away without saying a word.

    They're rather annoying.

Seconding the british accent mentioned here.

I say we run away. They obviously mean Ashley harm, and she can't properly defend herself as is.

You interrupt the fairy things, mustering your best British accent. Apart from their obvious differences, the two tiny, winged humanoids sigh almost exactly alike. They lower themselves to your eye level, the taller one rolling its eyes and the fat one placing its hands on its hips. They stare at you for a moment before the tall one sighs once more and addresses you:

"Those are some awfully complicated questions for a stranger to this world..." he mutters, clearing his throat as he continues, "...and such funny sounds you make! But those will all be answered in due time! You aren't too freaked out, are you?" The fat one chuckles to himself and shakes his head, alighting on your right shoulder. "Of course she is, look at this place! You do remember where she comes from?"

The taller one waves off his words with a few motions of his tiny hand, taking his place on your left shoulder. "Yeah yeah, I remember. Such a random world, though, sandwiched in-between all the chaos and order. You never know what to expect! Not like..."

The fat one cuts him off abruptly, leaving your shoulder to float right in front of your face. "Ashley Carson, you're alright...right? How about you stand up and take a look around."

As you begin to look around, you realize the surroundings are a bit more varied than the view from the hill afforded. A heavily wooded forest begins to the north, surrounded by a thick fog that shortens your vision inward considerably. To the south, tiny huts dot the landside, but you're unsure of the distance between your hill and the village. The landscapes to the west and east appear to be the same barren landscape as your immediate surroundings, almost identical if not for the huge lighthouse to the east. The sun appears to be setting, but it's hard to gauge it perfectly with the dark light it sheds.

As you turn back around, both of the fairy-things are floating at your eye level. "One answer you'll get though," the tall one begins. "...are our names!" the fat one finishes with a loud shout. They bow gracefully, and introduce themselves. “Fortune is my name, because that's what I try to make from our life here!” The fat one exclaims, suddenly very excited for no apparent reason. The tall one pats him on the back and smiles. “And I am Lore, for reasons that should make themselves known later.”

And then, in unison: “Any other questions before we set off?” Both seem eager to depart, not out of fear but some other emotion you can't quite make out.

Both of the fairy-like creatures are taken aback by your sudden persistence. “Wow Fortune, I guess she won't be taken advantage of!” Lore says with a chuckle. Fortune only nods, allowing Lore to continue. “It's hard to explain in terms that would make sense to you. Just know that this world is much different than the one you came from. Sure, there's night and day, darkness and light...but different forces than you're accustomed to govern here.” As he speaks, Lore lowers himself to the ground near where you're sitting.

“Stop pouting and focus on this,” he continues, pulling a small object similar to an acorn from behind his back. “Try to reach out with your mind and really get a sense of what it means to exist. What it means for this little thing to exits...Fortune and I as well. Then, direct that energy towards this little nut. You might be surprised with what happens next. Here, don't be worried, we'll help.” Lore gives Fortune a soft nudge, and they both close their eyes in deep concentration.

You hardly understand what the little creature is rambling on about, but you finally close your eyes with a deep sigh. Nothing happens at first, but somehow you begin to sense the world around you...not with touch, smell, or hearing but some other sense you've never felt before. After a few more minutes, you can almost see the two fairies in front of you, as if you were looking at them through a thick, black fog. The acorn, on the other hand, shines brightly through the darkness, glowing like a firefly before blipping out of view.

“It's...gone?” You say in a hushed voice, opening your eyes to reveal the smiling faces of Lore and Fortune.

“Not just from view, right?” Lore leads, waving his hands in front of your face for show. “It's literally gone.” Fortune speaks in an unusually subdued tone beside his partner. “That's just one of the many wonders we can reveal to you in this world. Believe us when we say it's not our place to unmask every secret that's been laid before you, but we'll do our best to help if and when you want it.”

They obviously hope that's the last of your questions, and motion to the horizon. “Where shall we go first?”
