Big Boss is pretty much the posterchild for Chaotic Neutral, dude. The fates of people, countries, and even the world as a whole are completely meaningless to him, but he's never actively malicious towards any of them.
All he cares about is HIS objective, which is fulfilling the last wishes of his dead mentor. If he has to kill people or start an endless war to do that, then too bad, but he's not going to just give up to avoid hurting people.

On the other hand, he stops a nuclear war from breaking out a couple of times just because he happens to be in the area at the time, even though the aftermath would likely turn the entire world into his dream; a place where soldiers will always be useful.

Big Boss went off the deep end so hard he discovered new forms of deep-sea invertebrates. He was quite clearly a megalomaniac, and his goal had changed as of the original Metal Gear from "Save the world and be a hero like the Boss" to "Soldiers must always be useful, because that's what the Boss would have wanted."

This was all, like, a huge plot point in 4. His abandonment of Eva and Ocelot even though both desperately needed and looked up to him? His spiraling paranoia and hatred of Zero, because Zero's idea of what the Boss wanted was different? I fail to see how you could have missed it.
Big Boss was obsessed with his dead mentor to the point of stealing a walking nuclear tank and holding the world to ransom with it, then arranging for his own counter-terrorism team to try and recover it so he could feed them false information. Twice.
The dude was fucking nuts.

Chaotic Neutral, more like. He hates what society does to and with the working class. So he ends up doing the the same thing to them (but worse) by making them wholly subjects of Tyler Durden. The real reason he's pissed off is because an obviously superior human being such as himself should be the one in charge. So he concocts a scheme to tear down the current social hierarchy, for the purpose of placing himself at the top of a powerful new movement that he rules over by force of personality.
