Hey guys, sorry I missed last night, RL intervenes as it does.

Lets get everything moving again, finish off the Feast of the Ancients and get into a new month.

You've just rescued Urist from the clutches of Lord Sylem, something everyone but Sylem seems pretty happy with. Sylem has left the Ancestor's Feast Early, slighting everyone present.

Sheff takes you aside, and tells you the service is from sundown in the family temple. It looks like you have some hours to spare. What now?

Just going off to hunt by ourselves on another lord's land seems incredibly sketchy. Not too mention pointless considering we just came back from a hunt.

My vote is going to the library and reading up on some mythology, legends, etc. When we get our estate in order, we're bound to get bored eventually.

You talk to Urist, who is in the care of a Exidaid priest. He's incredibly thankful to you, and apologises for not making it with the vegetables in Wrecktember. According to him, he owes you a debt, and offers to become your private merchant, allowing you first pick at his wares, and selling your wares for you.

    >>7143038
You talk to the scribe, who introduces himself as John, and he directs you to the alchemy section. However all the scrolls are missing. John is quite perplexed as to where they may be.

An offer we'd be glad to accept. A regular trading agent would be most helpful.

As to the scrolls... there's one possible culprit who's stalked off in a fit of pique, and is known to be crazy enough that he might just steal from his gracious host. Was Sylem seen around the library before he left?

It would be a good first step to ask her if she has seen them. Either she does have them, or she will be most sympathetic to our cause of getting them back.

Urist tells you that he was buying some carrots from the peasantry in Erondia, when a half dozen local toughs in uniforms arrest him on a dozen trumped up charges. After beating him up they took him before a Sylem's court, where they were paid a bounty for bringing in a dwarf, and then he was caged. Sylem personally oversaw his treatment, treating him like a caged animal, whipping and starving him, only feeding him enough to survive.

You wonder about the castle, looking for Sarah, and eventually find her and her mother embroidering. Sarah is obviously bored, and jumps up with excitement when she sees you. "Oh! You're back! I heard you and Lord Sylem got in a duel! And then he came back in a fury. He looked as angry as I've ever seen any man." Her mother doesn't say anything, but looks disapproving.

See, Sylem had imprisoned an acquaintance of mine by what I could only assume to be an honest mistake. I'm glad he was able to see reason tonight.

Of course, what I came here to say was that I am very sorry for my behavior during the feast. I hope neither of you will judge me too harshly for it but I certainly won't fault you for it."

Give an explanation of the situation, stressing how we could not allow a friend of ours to suffer such terrible injustice at the hands of Lord Sylem, and so with the welcome assistance of Lords Sheff and Lyann we challenged Sylem to a hunting contest; by the grace of Byron we were successful, and the mistreated dwarf was freed.

Make sure that credit is given where it is due, and that we don't come across as a boaster or braggart. It was a tricky situation, but we were simply doing what we felt was right and just.

I think that at the moment we're definitely in Sarah's good books, but we're still trying to atone in Lady Sheff's eyes. As such, any discussion of alchemy should be postponed until she's not around, given that she does not approve of her daughter's studies.

I think we could probably mention that we were looking to read the alchemy scrolls in Sheff's library if we touch it very lightly and then, before we leave, inquire with Lady Cathy if we would be able to ask her chef for the veal pie recipe that was served at dinner?

Respectfully note that we can vouch for this particular dwarf as a trustworthy and honest sort, and his mistreatment by Sylem was entirely undeserved.

I think that we'll need to talk to Sarah away from Lady Sheff in order to have any discussion of more risky things without damaging our standing with her.

For now, I vote for the veal pie gambit, praising it in glowing terms and asking if we might have the recipe.

At the end of the conversation, though, we could remark that we will be spending some time in the library, with a Significant Glance to Sarah. Say nothing overt, but let the subtext speak for itself.

Ok, tiemskip to the Service. The Sheff Family, Lyann and you walk into a crypt-temple. A lone priest is singing a hymn in a language you don't understand. The walls are covered in vaults, all with the names, birthdays and ages of various Sheffs when they died carved into the walls. You follow Sheff's lead and kneel in front of the altar, with the Sheff Emblem, a Giant with a Trident, carved into obsidian. Beneith it is written "Tolerate no poison, remove it with valor."

Kneeling before the statue you hear mutters in odd voices, and a cold prickling sensation starts on the back of your neck.

"We have . . . honour those who . . gone before us. . . present to . . . friendly. . . Sir Lyann of Eastcoast." Lyann stands, and hesitantly walks over to the priset, pauses a moment, then kneels. The priest continues talking in the odd language, intones something with some weight of importance in his words, then Lyann stands and walks back.

You walk up to the priest, who is standing there silently. As you kneel before him he starts to speak, and Sheff whispers in your ear, translating.

"I hereby recognise Thomas Green as a friend to the family of Sheff, and would honour him with my blade." The priest dubs you with the sword and speaks, Sheff once more translating. "Friend, who would suck the poison from us, with with valour fight it. Friend who would pull us from the fire, and with compassion, quench it. Friend who would defend us from the final death, and in good faith fight with us. Stand Thomas Green."

As you stand the priest says something, to which Sheff replies, evidently surprised. Sheff then asks you whether you are decended from the Doobs family of Northgate. (you are, mothers side.)

Sheff translates the priest's reply, seemingly worried. "We Sheffs had a blood fued with the Doobs family of old, when they rebelled against King Brachyura in the second treachery of the Sucessor's war. It was but two generations after we inherited Seakay, and they were ever bitter of us slaying one of their mighty Wyverns. We killed the last Wyvern Drake in this part of the world, it was a mighty victory. But the feuding which followed was harsh." He lifts his sword, but before you can react continues talking. After a moment the current Lord Sheff is relieved, and continues translating. "But these fueds end with time, and no hate should last unto perpetuity. I would ask you give blood tonight, as a sign of your friendship and the end of the fued."

    >>7144431
Sheff motions you to wait to the side as he takes the sword, and taking off his shirt, cuts a long line down his chest. Not to deeply, but deep enough. He lets a double handful of blood pool within the his hands and then pours it into a hole in the altar. Then his sons follow, each using a small dagger they brought with them to do a smaller cut on their chest. You see that all of them have many scars from identical cuts. Sarah follows, using a small bone needle she prics a hole in her finger, and lets a few drops fall into the hole, before motioning for you to follow suit. Lord Sheff hands you an ancient short sword he's taken from the rack behind him. Dispite being copper, and noticeably ancient, it's blade is still sharp. You do a large cut similar to Sheffs, and after giving your blood, stand back. Most of the family is all standing behind the altar, where you join them, although Cathy and Lyann are still kneeling before the altar.

Again, the major argument against was nothing personal. Sheff has been nothing but a good friend to us.

HOWEVER, we're the second son of a female of the Doobs family, we have no right to speak to the clan.

What's done is done, we need to react. We need to send correspondence to the head of the Doobs family and tell him what we've done. Further, and though I'm sure his intentions are noble, a regional power possesses an amount of our own blood. Are there any magics that deal with such things?

Before I go, a word from those older then I.

The forest that walks shall be bound to the giant, and the giant to the forest. Dark blood will strike, but pure sanguine repel and prevail. Give much thought to steel and fire, for it's time is coming. As old steel is laid to rest, new steel will be wrought, and thirstily quenched. Old signs will return. "

With a twitching the Priest falls to the floor, and getting himself up speaks in his original voice. "I guess all went well m'lord, and we have another blooded I see. Will this one be wanting a place?"
Sheff smiles and says "No, I would not be thinking so. Clean up the altar, and wait for the sheets in the morning." Turning to you he continues "Don't go showing those to the priests, they'll take on so, and they won't be able to heal it anyways. Nothing a good nights rest won't fix."

As you walk back from the temple you adress your worries to Sheff. "Oh, that war's long done and over. The old ghosts are never up on the times. That was before you Greens were even nobles. Between the old families it was. Sheffs and Doobs were bitter enemies, and the Sheffs were a new family then. The Doobs are old guard, didn't like the new upstart families taking their power. But it's all ancient history now. Just keeping the ghosts happy."

"Oh and the cuts. Well, the priests of Exidaid don't hold with ancestor worship, most of the newer gods don't. But you said you're a Byron man? From what I know you have no strictures about such things. Sorry it was forced on you like that, I didn't expect things to go that way. It's a great honour though, only other people in my lifetime outside the family to give blood was Lyann and Reginald, one of my father's old guard. He got him a place too, a good man he was. Oh and Cathy, when she married in. Never given blood since, she's of Exidaid, don't hold with it. Only did it for the wedding ceremony, and I took her vows too. She comes down every year though, to keep an eye of the children. She wasn't happy when Sarah took to the old ways, her sisters both went to Exidaid. But now I'm rambling, anything else you want to ask about?"

Also, this is really dependent on what we're facing, we should avoid making use of Sheff's army as much as possible. Trade with him for arms, maybe except advisers to train our men, but we must attempt to stand on our own.

They usually give some kind of warning, and a comment on the year gone. They've been hinting at something bloody for some time now, but nothing's come of it. Sometimes their prophesies take hundreds of years before they come true, at other times only days. I'd contend that we add some projects to our list:

    - Build a Smithy and procure the services of a decent blacksmith.
    - Better equipment for our soldiers. The tannery could help by producing leather armour, the smithy will be able to produce spearheads and metal armour.
    - Fortifications. Rebuild and/or strengthen the walls around our keep. Currently I think we've got wooden palisades at best, if we have enough stone to upgrade or reinforce those then that'd be good. How long would it take peasants to dig earthen ditches and ramparts around the keep, if we don't have those already?
    - Basic training for every able-bodied man on our estate. Several hours a week, at least, training in staves, spears or bows.
    - Outposts at the edges of our territory, or wherever an attacker might try to move in from - we're fairly well-defended from two sides, having a swamp and a river in our favour, but need to do our best to ensure we have advance warning of any approaching foes. Beacon fires should do the job for that - a stack of wood and oil on visible hilltops to relay a warning across the countryside in case of alarm.

A peasant was lost. He was out gathering lumber, when he was shot in the leg. Turned foul, and the preist couldn't save him. One of the new lads was given his place in turn.

You wake up the next morning, your sheets soaked with blood, but your wound healed. A long scar remains where you opened your flesh, but it's healed over cleanly, and there is no scab, just a pale pink line of new skin. Lord Sheff comes down to your room shortly afterwards, and walks in on you topless, running your finger where you should have a long scar. "Told you a nights sleep would do you a world of good. Again, don't say a word to any of the priests about this, they get touchy over it."

Later, at breakfast Sheff asks your plans. "You're welcome to stay on as long as you like, but you'll need to get back to your own estate to keep things moving smoothly I take it."

We've been doing for several threads now

    >Outposts at the edges of our territory, or wherever an attacker might try to move in from - we're fairly well-defended from two sides, having a swamp and a river in our favour

The swamp being full of trolls, is definitely not in our favor, especially if they attack. The river is bridged nearby and on someones land.

    >Beacon fires should do the job for that - a stack of wood and oil on visible hilltops to relay a warning across the countryside in case of alarm.

Something like this was suggested last thread, hopefully it was acted upon. Otherwise, the map didn't show any hills of note nearby.

You could hire him, I'm sure he'd be amicable. As things stand though he's just a merchant at your beck and call. So if you want x, he'll get it for you, or if you want to sell y, he'll sell them for you and split the profits (mostly to you, just time and food for him). But for now he's still recovering.

Not yet. He'll be good to travel in about a month.

You ask Sheff for an armourer, and he sends you to a merchant of some repute, near the north end of the merchant's quarter.

You arrive and the merchant has armour of all kinds from chain vests (10g) to studded leather (4g) to full plate (40g). He has large supplies of basic weapons from steel spearheads (1g for 20) to short swords (2-8g each, very simple and crude to average quality). The merchant intoduces himself as William Bell-hare, arms merchant.

    BONUS FOUND:
    The Prince of Bell-hair.

Willium Bell-hair was the second son of a border-prince who's princedom was destroyed in a peasant uprising. The uprising was able to happen due to a shipment of weapons they stole. Knowing how much weapons were worth in the world of war, he decided to make his fortune with them. Selling his own guilted sword, he bought a small shipment of swords, and sold them for a great profit to disgruntled peasantry, who paid him after their revoloution. From this he has built up a trade empire, and although he has curbed his rebellion-fuelling weapon sales, he now deals in weapons for the crown, and is a major supplier to the Erondian army. He specialises in making cheap, no-nonsense weapons that do the job.

Buy enough spear heads to provide our yeoman with simple spears. Swords are sadly too expensive for us to consider buying any great number of.

Our best bet is to attempt to hire a blacksmith sometime in the near future. It is easier to pay wages and provide material then to pay for expensive trader fees.
