    3 KB Rose Cross- Quest Thread- pt.II Information Singularity !kr3RP8S.1. 12/14/09(Mon)21:43 No.7137936
You have died. In death you seem to have lost a great deal of what you once knew, and so you try to consolidate yourself on what you know and what you have learned since dieing.

    You know:
That you are a Kuwati named Sha’een.
You were killed by the Americans, and you did something to offend the USDoD.
You have an intense familiarity with computers and information systems.
You have a strong familiarity with scientific knowledge and concepts.
That this thread is archived at http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/7084314/

    You no longer know:
Math or Reading- not just how to read but reading itself.
Anything about Philosophy or Religion, though you know of and can contemplate them.
Any of your opinions you had in life. Seems like your preferences are gone.
You cannot remember what it was like to sleep.
You are unsure of what else you do not know that you once knew.

    Since death you have learned:
There are psychopomps which save souls from dissolving into death
You have been retrieved by the Gnostics, who reside in Gnostic Utopia
God is dead, or so they claim, but archons still battle on for souls.
The Gnostics chose you because you are compatible with Bythos, whatever that means
The Magus Kessler is an Order of the Silver star- the highest order blah blah blah

You have befriended the baddest strongest dude who spawned near you- a Chechnyan named Raiz who also died a violent death, cannot recall the origin of his name, and immediately upon being reborn KO’d three men and tried to rape the first woman he saw.

You now stand alone with him in the pool of mist where you both formed, as everyone filed out at the instruction of Magus Kessler. A 15m tall flaming suit of armor carrying a scythe hovers silently behind you- the psychopomp which brought you here.

After the weird mishap 4chan had last time, you left so you might not have seen what I wanted us to do. Here it is from the archive:

"Goodbye Azzy. I will not soon forget you."

Yes, I wish to actually call him Azzy.

And then we go through the tunnel with Kessler.

Oh come on, where all the religious debating that plagued the first part? Look, I'll start it for you.

Even if we don't have free will, we don't know it and it would be hidden so well that we would never be able to prove that we didn't have free will.

"Hrmm..." Magus Kessler groans. He looks into the Reaper's eyes, and addresses, "Thank you CHARSISXV17 for bringing us these Neophytes. Your contribution will not be mishandled, and we are, despite everything, grateful for your essential service."

The reaper responds by vibrating it's armor with sonic frequency- producing a deep metallic monotone, "YES MAGUS KESSLER. THANK YOU."

Magus Kessler nods and then beckons you to leave, and Raiz follows. He starts in without waiting for you to ask. "It is a personal... quirk of mine to feel pity for them. Of all the Templars, REAPER class models suffer the cruelest fate. They cannot exist outside the ether field for long, and so they are never amidst the city- nor do they associate with one another, for they are unfailing in their duties. They walk eternity silent and alone pulling lost souls from the formless mist. Worse still, all Templars are viewed as necessary evils at best by most Gnostics, including those in the highest Orders of the Silver Star- and yet men still choose to trade their flesh for cold blue flame and steel so they can do the duties the rest of us refuse..."
He glances out of the corner of his eye at you both,
    "...welcome to Utopia."

"One thing we must face is that we are not all equal. Not everyone will possess the mental prowess to comprehend the universe even if given an eternity to do so. But every last person who is here- we are bound by a common thread. And that is our pursuit of truth. Templars are those who pursue truth with the utmost passion, but are incapable of manifesting that desire except to do our grunt work. But this will all be explained soon- as it is you've delayed orientation a bit, but that is acceptable since I encourage interaction with the REAPER class Templars. Please have a seat in here while I prepare the Orientation."

He gestured into the lecture hall. It was well lit and well decorated, but sterile. Blue steel, scarlet tapestry and carpet, and the alabaster white of the initiate's robes seemed to be the main theme. There was enough room for people so separate. As Raiz entered, more room was made to keep distance from him.

Magus Kessler took behind the podium and spoke, “Welcome, all Neophytes. There is no easy way to break into orientation, so I will try to cover all the basics before opening the floor to questions.

“You have died. Upon death, your soul- the arena that bears your experience made of a substance which we have accepted as the term ether, began to merge with collective flow of ether from whence your identity came. As you merged with the collective, your individuality began to fade, and with it all your experiences began to unravel. Without a brain or body you could not in this state form conscious thought, recall memories, or organize phenomenal experience in a coherent manner. This disembodied state is the death you faced. Your collective essence is the experiences that you endured in life, and it was these which we have captured and used to reverse engineer your brain and body. You will find that certain parts are missing, whereas you had already partially dissolved by the time we found you.”

“The agent that found you was a REAPER class Templar- a specially modified denizen of our realm who can travel the ether field without losing his identity in it, and is also specially equipped to identify, separate, and retrieve individuals from this field- a function referred to as being a psychopomp. We identified you because in life your experiences showed a devotion to truth- perhaps not a total devotion, in which case it is possible we came into conflict with other psychompomps. It appears no such confrontation emerged with this particular group.”

“Who are we? We are the Gnostics. But in order for that to mean anything you must know who else there is, and where precisely it is that you are. You are in an afterlife. It is a plane of existence shaped by mortal thought and made real by adherence to a moral virtue. The mortals who shape this realm call themselves atheists, but when they die they discover there is a non-physical dimension to reality, and so wind up here, where we take it upon ourselves to study that which cannot be studied by the living. The moral virtue that makes this world real is truth. So long as mortals continue to pursue truth, our world will exist. So long as mortals who believe in truth die, we shall seek them out and bring them here- either as a reward or to further our cause- decide for yourself.”

“There are seven other worlds, seven other virtues, roughly conforming to mortal religious themes. Because each faction wants as much faith in its existence as possible, you’ll find the interpretation of both virtue and dogma to be quite broad. Each virtue is polar, so for each virtue there will be a counter virtue, and likewise for each planar faction a counter faction. The virtues and their corresponding worlds are as follows, listed beside their counter virtue:
Mercy- the 7 Heavens vs. Justice- the Primordial Kaos
Power- the 9 Hells vs. Freedom- the Firmament
    Peace- Paradise vs. Legend- Ysgard
    Truth- Utopia vs…

Well, I’ll let you decide what the opposite of truth is supposed to be interpreted as.”

“Now, what else have I missed… questions?”

I tend to define 'truth' in real life as simply that which is physical reality-- it is a bit sketchier when mystical planes are introduced as cannon in a work of fiction.
As long as something exists in space-time, it holds a value of true. A human can perceive truth through logical derivation from observation an verification.

One of the fellow initiates raised their hands. "So what happens now?"

"Ah!" Magus Kessler replied, "I was going to get to that, but I'll say this much. You are all neophytes. That means you are all of the lowest order- essentially interns trying to find your place here in Utopia. There are terminals that have already been logged with a variety of information that you should find relatively easy to use- this should take care of some logistics such as how daily life will proceed. I'll be available and in fact keeping tabs on you to ensure you integrate well into our society and find the optimal placement for your skills. Immediately after this you'll be taken to a small lab where we will provide you with eternal life and sustenance from our tree of life, after which I'll essentially turn you loose onto the streets to figure out where to go from there. Of course, I will be available for questions at any time."

Other then that, I guess we should start looking for one of those terminals. Find out about the political structure here, what jobs there are, etc,.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking more or less I just didn't articulate it very well.

Seriously I don't quite get how we can have Tech here, even assuming the belief that stabilises the plan produces usable resources in the form of raw materials, I don't see how people are going to have somehow refined this into silicon chips in the freakin AFTERLIFE. I mean yes they have had centuries in which to build up a presence on the plane coupled with eternally living scientists, but it just seems like the transition to the afterlife would be a little too disruptive to allow the infrastructure to develop.

I was stating that the human brain is a computer which uses semantic-mirror (symbol) programing language. [Because it's true!]

Although, they do seem to have the technology to produce creatures that can traverse the ether without harm. Probably a golem-style of construction, these people seem particularly Qaballah Flavored.
Perhaps they could produce a ship of some kind, like the one Ra takes into the underworld!

Also, they must have had contact with the other factions at some point. And they *do* make reference to conflict with other psychopomps, presumably from other factions.

    The Magus responds,
"The terminals are available in most public sectors- especially those in this sector- which is the Sector for Necromantic Affairs. It is here where all Neophytes are pulled from death, and also where death and the ether field are studied. There are several other sectors, available on the terminals. The terminals themselves are connected to Bythos."

"Bythos is a somewhat important entity I shall stop and explain. Each plane has a deity. But a deity is a distinct concept from a god. Gods once existed, but they were all slain long ago. So in a way, the atheists among you did have it right- sort of... in any case, a deity is nothing more than a reservoir of divine energy- that is, the energy we derive from our virtue, Truth. The general attitude among Gnostics towards divine energy is hostility, since it opens the potential for Gods and Archons- or more accurately demiurge. Hence, the attitude towards Bythos is somewhat hostile as well. We do not worship Bythos, as some worlds worship their deity- but we do use it in as much as the Silver Star deems safe. Bythos is embodied in the center of the city in a mainframe which expresses the divine energy as an AI which helps us organize our data and information with extreme efficiency. He is what works behind the terminals, but rest assured that there are an overly paranoid number of precautions to prevent Bythos from ascending to a full scale free-willed individual God."

Whilst informative, this still gives no indication as to how the terminals were actually built in the first place. I mean I assume they are magicomputery as opposed to outpourings of divine energy that can be used to display information.

From what, and how, were the structures that harness Bythos for practical purposes built?

"I'm hearing some concern over the Tree of Life. First of all, let me assure you this only modifies your essence so as to eliminate aging and mundane diseases and defects. It will also accelerate healing, though not as much as the more potent versions we've found in other worlds I'm afraid. Second, it is merely technological, with a minor divine connection to our sustaining energy, Bythos. If you do not receive such a connection, your time here as a petitioner will be short and you'll fade right back out of existence. Third, you will still be very susceptible to being killed, particularly by our planar counterparts if you so anger them. And Fourth- it is mandatory, in as much as refusal will result in your quick and inevitable death. So, if we have that squared away- I'll open for one last round of questions and you can proceed out the back door for a quick injection, and be on your merry way."

Our origins have a somewhat difficult to discern history, since our first denizens were not historians and did not keep good records. However, we are well versed not only the operations and technology available to the mortal realm but also the fluctuations being distant form the mortal realm affords us in subverting the laws of physics. The other planes call this arcane, and to avoid confusion we abandoned trying to explain to them it was merely aberrant laws of the fringes of the multiverse. In any case, we can use a variety of interesting methods to shape things to our will in the netherworld- which includes all faction's worlds- and we can utilize the energy of our deity in our homeworld to assist in the control of the design. It makes industry a somewhat effortless feat- but the economy of the netherworld is sustained by ideas and belief. It is for this resource all factions compete, and from this resource all creation springs."

"Incursion. Always good to know the political situation. The structure of the netherworld is a tesseract- each plane borders all others except its polar virtue. We are fairly new, evidently, in that our numbers have surged wildly- but time passes differently here, so it is difficult to tell how events in the mortal world have transpired, particularly since much of that worldly experience dissolves rather quickly from the reports of the recently deceased. However, the recent surge in the pursuit of truth has not only left us as the primary benefactor of technological knowledge but propelled us form idle and unimportant threat to planar superpower. It seems most planes want to ally with us and encourage us to attack their enemies, but on the whole it is unlikely any will make an offensive against us."

"That said, a great deal of our research occurs in the other planes. Whenever we suffer casualties, it is from some altercation or another on some other factions turf."
    >> Anonymous 12/15/09(Tue)00:17 No.7139609
    >>7139544
This explanation sort of begs the question of what exactly the factions accomplish through their competitions. Based upon your previous information it is the adherence of mortals, presumably the living ones, which provides this realm with belief in truth, and that resource is... set, or aspected, somehow towards truth as a concept. How could anyone else take it, or meaningfully make use of it, if they are dependent upon other concepts for the support of their realms?
    >> Researcher Sam 12/15/09(Tue)00:17 No.7139620

So it's sort of a competition to see who can get the most souls to generate belief in one group's realm to keep it active? More belief give more power and energy to do things with? Interesting. Though clearly some souls are incompatible with certain groups.

If you feel you have some other commitments to other virtues, rest assured that diplomacy and foreign relations is quite the heated field here in Utopia. After all, perhaps the defining principle of Utopia is it's allegedly perfect policy, but as of yet we dedicate ourselves only to the further collection of truth until we can determine what policy, and which virtues, are the ultimate reality for a perfect world."

"Very well then. Welcome to Utopia. And one more thing I should let you know, lest you fail to discover- all laws are in contention here, being researched in something of a political laboratory. What's legal is going to vary depending on which sector you are in, hence the abundance of terminals. But there is one law that is universal. Gnostics do not tell lies. Whatever you do, do it in the name of truth. It is not so much a law as a universally accepted taboo. The metal doors slide open in the back, where some nurses are beckoning the initiates to enter. The lights brighten to indicate the lecture has ended, and people start to file into the back. Very well. The crowd fills the gap between you and Raiz, and you eventually get stuck in line, filed through with the injection, and out a door to an open street plaza- a pedestrian street. Many of the Neophytes are starting to cluster and converse, but you realize as you near them that since you are no longer in the presence of Magus Kessler, language barriers are starting to reform. There are a plentiful number of terminal booths lining the plaza awaiting inquiry.

I wouldn't be so quick to rule out the Necromantic studies offer though, we would be at least able to enter at an entry level as opposed to being thrust into something above our abilities. Also its in our current sector which may or may not be a boon depending on how you look at things.

Unfortunately indecision isn't something we have much time for, since the wagonload of souls we came in with are probably already starting to take in recruits.

I guess the benefits of each respective field are as follows:
Planar Mechatronics: Awesome, and theres a good chance that this one will keep us close enough to Raiz that we can keep in contact with him if desired, chances are he's likely to take up some kind of war related job.
    Cons: Hard to get.

Animation Industries: Easiest to get into, semi-awesome, and not far from our present location, so very little chance of getting lost. Possibly its ease may allow us to freely investigate the rest of the region in what free time we have.
CONS: We won't discover as many new things about our present predicament by taking the job.

Planar Biology: Will provide us with a wealth of information about the state of things, how this afterworld works etc.
CONS: Only option with a non-negligible possibility of perishing in the line of duty.
