"100 years ago, a satellite detected an object under the sands of the Great Desert.
    An expedition was sent.
An ancient starship, buried in the sand. Deep inside the ruin was a single stone that would change the course of our history forever.
On the stone was etched a galactic map
and a single word more ancient than the clans themselves:
    Terra.
    Our home.

The clans were united and a massive colony ship was designed.
    Construction would take 60 years.
It would demand new technologies, new industries and new sacrifices.
The greatest of these was made by the scientist Karan Sjet who herself permanently integrated into the colony ship as its living core.
    She is now Fleet Command.
The promise of the Guidestone united the entire population.
Every mind became focused on the true origin of our people ...
... every effort on the construction of the ship that would seek it out among the stars. "

ITT: Kharak falls victim of the Imperial Exterminatus, Mothership survives.

So what are the chances of Kushani taking over Terra if this was their Homeworld? If none, then how close to Terra would they get? Let's say Kharak is a border planet, as far from Terra as possible yet close enough to the Imperium to be a victim of Exterminatus.

    >> Anonymous 02/10/09(Tue)08:35 No.3668823
In Homeworld, the Hyperspace core that they had was BIG SHIT. As in, other people had FTL, but with their core they could go farther and faster more often than anyone else.

So, if that translates to 40k, then they might actually make it to Terra by going AROUND all of the other defenses.

That said, the Kushan ships are probably no match for imperial vessels. However, the mothership can build ships faster than the Imperials can, and on the spot too. So I can see the Kushan winning some battles just from superior numbers (lol ion frigate spam backed up by 3 battlecruisers).

They aint taking Terra though. It's just not going to happen.

That's because the core unit the Kushan exiles took was one of the three original cores from the Progenitor ship Sajuuk. The hyperspace drives most ships use are reverse-engineered from those.

It's like comparing, say, the Saturn V to a toy rocket. Same basic principle, but the details are everything.

    >So, if that translates to 40k, then they might actually make it to Terra by going AROUND all of the other defenses.

Thats what they did in HW - they tried to avoid Taiidani fleet as much as possible, only fighting when necessary.

    >That said, the Kushan ships are probably no match for imperial vessels.

What's keeping them from building Imperial vessels? We can assume that their technology is relic from DAoT, and with their reverse-engineering capabilities they can not only build similar vessels but also find weakspots in Iperial ships and find ways of countering and defending from Iperial weaponry. Of course if they manage to capture a Imperial ship and survive the initial confrontation with their fleet

    >They aint taking Terra though. It's just not going to happen.

Well, I have to agree. Even if they managed to wipe out every ship near Terra, they never going to take the planet - too many well trained ground forces.

I have to wonder if anything else came of that technology. I mean it's easy to assume that neural interfaces would gradually become more commonplace in the Hiigaran Navy, what with the sheer SIZE of some of their ships and the complexity of their inherent systems. But did they ever manage to duplicate the fully immersive interface?

Are there, somewhere, in secret, megalithic ships being made along those same lines? Humans used as living command circuits for some kind of colossal warship?

Well there has to be some kind of interface to forward commands to individual ships since after all you assume the role as the fleet commander, and as such I always imagined the orderes were broadcasted from Karan to the rest of the fleet.

As for how they developed the interface, I'd assume it was on those sketches they found on the wreck on Kharak. If not, one can only assume they already had such technology or that it was created during the development (which is less likely).

One simple mining ship, became a command ship in homeworld cataclysm. So I assume that if a non-military ship has it, all the other ships have them too.

I'm not talking about how the tech came about. Presumably it was something someone was already working on, but put in a radical new context.

I'm talking about DEVELOPING the technology, for more small-scale use. Cybernetic interface systems for military personnel. Think MMI. Stuff that help you do your job faster.

As for command interface, I'm imagining something along the level of a big cyber-conference with various admirals talking at each other in their heads. Only way to get orders around a battlefield light years across in anything close to decent response times.

In homeworld 1, the hyperspace core was just some generic low quality thing that was fitted on the freighters that took the exiles away. Most of the freighters failed in route (some stopped in a nebula and went insane). They crash land on a desert on the equator on some barely habitable planet at the edge of the galaxy, lose most their tech while trying to reach the habitable poles of the planet. Thousands of years later, they find the crash site under the desert. Whole planet then spends every resource they have reverse engineering it to build a space ship of their own. Using some starmap some guy scrawled before they abandoned ship. Then the nearby enemy naval base burns the planet.

I HATED the plot to homeworld 2 with it's magical warp drive. Why would some prisoners of war be given an iriplaceable artifac.

I think the textures and design on some of the new ships, especially the black rose, stand out a bit too much compared to the other ships. It just looks un-Homeworldly. Also, they turned the later versions into too much of "Armchair admiral in space: the simulator" by trying to enforce real life naval doctrine into space combat. Earlier versions are still good though.

Yeah I played it. Looked pretty, but gameplay wasn't more than mass raptors attack cylon interceptors and have battlestar shoot cylon capitals.

Though speaking of mods, I'm looking forward for the EVE mod for HW2, presuming it's ever gonna get released. They've modded in most of the Gallente and Caldari ships, but apparantly development is on hiatus and they can't release the mod until it's 100% done (by orders from CCP).

    **SPOILERS**

The story was shit, it wasn't the Vaygr, it was that progenitor wankery that ruined it. I'm all for ancient tech from forgotten races...but they went overboard. I can still hear 'BRING SAJUUK TO BEAR' being fanatically SHRIEKED in my ear. And they killed the Bentusi, those fucks! Bah.

PDS is awesome though. Since I hear THQ has acquired the rights to the HW license I just hope Relic will do number 3 better.

Homeworld Fleet gets owned by pop cap.

Also, no shields, Holy Imperium of Man has void shields. Homeworld tech is obviously superior in other regards, as they understand what the hell they are doing with it, but if they run into a proper battlefleet they are proper fucked.

As far as production times go, yes, they can almost certainly build faster than the Imperium can, but not in 'video game time'. If they are not crushed outright in a decisive fleet action they lose by attrition anyway.

Or they just become a pirate nuisance until a SM chapter launches a crusade against them for plundering the worlds under their ward.

Oh, and Terra has ungoldy defenenses, not to mention Luna which is more or less a giant weapons platform.

Teleporting teriminator squads on board the mothership also yields doom.

The siege cannon was designed to be a weapon used against stationary defense platforms and planets.

Kith Somtaaw was hardcore enough to bolt it to a platform half the size usually considered for such a weapon and use it against moving targets.

    Cataclysm owns, Kith Somtaaw owns

I didn't like playing Cataclysm so much, the story was good and being able to issue orders from the overall map was great, but so many ships were shit making it painful to play.

Heavy fighters that don't pack as much punch as a bomber because they have to dock and reaload after every salvo. Not to mention getting ripped to bits by actual fighters that are faster & more maneuverable.

Combine 2 crappy fighters to make a crappy corvette with the same problems.

Holographic kamikaze fighters that you never used until that one mission where you just spammed them untill the satellite thingy blew up.

They'll probably botch HW3 in some way too.

I captured those multi-beam frigates. All of them. They were pretty. I even captured the fuel tanker catterpillars that refuled the fighters. Then I captured a good dozen of the fighters when they ran out of fuel. (useless, they have about 45 to 60 seconds worth of fuel) The huge motherships aren't capturable, I was sad.

I captured over 120 of those ion beam frigates in that mission to destroy the interdictor. Ever see 120 ion frigates all firing at once? The asteroid lasted only a few seconds. The endgame was a breeze since I just followed the huge ion frigate wall.

I had about 15 heavy cruisers too. All were captured from the enemy.
