You are STILL Alex Raston. After Giving Elsie a quick kiss on the cheek, you go to talk to Mooch.

When you get there he's muttering dark things at the toaster, while looking uncomprehending at the empty coffee pot.

    "Hey Mooch?"

"There is no coffee, and the toaster won't cook my bagel."

we do end up in melee way more than our mid-range build would suggest we should
    >> Anonymous 04/23/12(Mon)02:43 No.18825073
As much as I love Halberds my personal preference would be for a winged spear or a boar spear. It means you can get some good stabbing in, not as good swinging though, if you get some speed up you can do serious damage or just fuck up anyone who runs/jumps at you.

The wings mean they're stuck away from you instead of being able to take it through somewhere non-vital and run up the spear, which makes your weapon useless and lets them stab you. If they're stuck on the end of your spear their mobility is shot and you can dispense with them at your leisure, swing them around like a rag doll, shoot them with something they can't avoid at that point.
    >> Anonymous 04/23/12(Mon)02:44 No.18825085
A pole-arm might fix that somewhat, to where we can at least stab and attack in melee outside of conventional blade range. Boosting towards us would be dangerous too, since we could just brace it then and have them impale themselves on it.

"Hmmm.... I might be the better TECHNICALLY, but if Laurie plays it smart, we could change his load-out slighlty and he would be fucking deadly. Plus, you know, what with my Dad being evil and hunting me, it would be best to keep a low profile. Last time I went for a walk distracted I got nabbed by goons."

"Shit I never even considered that. How big of a deal might that be?"

"I'd rather avoid it for now, but sooner or later, I'm going to have to deal with my father. Later I think would be better, but I'm not going to put my preferences before Hope. Now I'm gonna let you make the call, and while you do that I'll wire the money over to Zack to help the colonists."

"So Dave, we need to put together a three man team for the Arena. Thoughts?"

"You and me are obvious. Cass has too much Dakka and Elsie is slightly less than fantastic up close. So either Mooch or Lawrence."

"Pretty much where I'm at. Who would you pick?"

"What, with a gun to my head? They're both good, but Mooch has publicity issues and something's really eating at Laurie. If you can get his shit straightened out enough for it to not be an issue, then he is the objectively better choice in my opinion. But if we go in there, we need to win. I say talk to Laurie and make a judgement call. All four of us work better solo anyway, so team composition doesn't matter as much there."

    "Thanks Dave."

    You are Lawrence Brenner.

You don't really know why you're acting like this. Some small part of you wants to go back and apologize.

Most of you just doesn't care right now.

You stumbled across an abandoned hangar nearby on your first day here. You find it again easy enough.

Under the seat you find the other two of the three bottles of whiskey you bought the other night. As you walk into the building you snap the top off of it and start to chug. As it burns going down, you realize this is probably a bad idea. Pretty soon it doesn't hurt as much. Maybe if you drink enough it'll stop hurting all together.

Pretty soon it's half empty, and you have to come up for air.

    It's a start.

The door's unlocked. Inside you see a bottle of Johnnie Walker that's clearly been emptied recently.

Shit. There's some disturbed dust in one direction. Following it leads you to Laurie sitting on a bench. Next to him's another bottle that's approaching half empty. he hears you approach.

"Go away Alex." He half slurs at you.

"Laurie, if you don't ant to talk about it, that's fine. But' you're got like a half a fucking gallon of hard alcohol in your system. You need to go to a fucking hospital or something."

You see his fist come up. You step inside his reach and body-check him.

He's clearly not going to calm down. You need to end this fast, and you need to get that Whiskey out of him before he starts to properly metabolize it.

He goes for a kick, you step back. He comes back for another punch, and you're quietly thankful he's so far off his game, or you'd never even be able to touch him. Then again, if he were any less worse off you probably wouldn't be in a fist-fight with your best friend in an abandoned building.

You lean outside of his swing and grab his shoulder. With one swift move you ram your knee into his stomach, and he falls down. A moment later you start to pick him up and hold him as he starts to puke. Looks like he got most of it out of his system. Then a minute later something else in him finally breaks loose, and he starts to cry.

After a long moment you realize you've never seen him cry before, and you just have him let it out.

After about an hour he pulls himself back together. Another hour after that, and he finishes his brooding silence.

"Sorry." he says. You've never heard him sound so.... fragile. "I guess you deserve an explanation."

Also, tone of voice plays a huge part in how this is received. You're acting like we're going to put on our batman voice and start growling at him. We could just quietly say something like "Yeah. It's obvious you're hurting. We all are. But we're a team, and that means we all look out for each other, even if someone thinks they'd rather hurt alone. You almost killed yourself now, and on top of losing Hope...that'd be too much to take. Please talk to me."

Or, you know, we could act like indecisive pussies who are unwilling to confront our best friend when he's drinking himself to death over an emotional wound he's too damaged to share. Because that's what a good friend does, right? It's also what a good commander does when one of his only pilots starts going off the deep end.

"....You remember Kate? Worked at that one Cafe?" You nod, and he continues. "Other than you guys, she was probably the only person who never tried to fuck with me. I've always gotten the shit end of everything, mostly because of how I look. So I just sort of decided to just.... I don't know, fucking compensate? I guess? The night before Hope got destroyed, she stopped by the cell and gave me this." He tosses the cross you got out of the sand earlier on the table. "Said I clearly needed it more than her. She went and brought it back to me after I already threw it away for the third fucking time. So I put it back on, and I went to sleep. Next day...." His voice trails off. "I could've done something about that you know. You almost got that one guy, by yourself. If I went there I could've easily tipped the balance there. I chose to stay behind. I'm fucking RECON. I should've been in there before anybody else. And don't try to feed me some line of bullshit about how it isn't my fault. The militia existed to protect Hope from exactly that sort of shit. regardless of circumstance, we fucking failed there."

He's quiet for a long moment. "Remember that bus you grabbed? I found out she should have been on it. Gave up her spot at the last second to toss on a woman and her two kids instead. I can't stop thinking about it. I wonder if she knew she wouldn't make it out if she didn't get on. If she just decided they were worth more to the world than her."

Yes, he's recon, but look at it this way - Laurie wants to be seen in a better light, at least from his own perspective. What's more manly than helping your bros out in the arena? It'd help his reputation a bit, I think, just like it'll help our own.

[X] ....Come on. Let's go home.

Well fuck, time to get some rest, he is probably not feeling well from the booze/fight and mentally drained. Time to go to bed, also since he talked about how he feels better in the core talk about the arena, and how you'd like to get him spec'd out to be more involved in a fight.

Ideally we could use this as a driving factor for him to be the best dam pilot he can be. Funnel his negativity into something good for now, and slowly try to help him come to terms with what happened.

Dude, we're his FRIEND, and we were too busy loling at Mooch's antics and fucking to notice how bad he was hurting.
We have been the world's worst bro for the past couple of weeks, especially considering he was worried about us acting different after we hooked up with Elsie, a fear that pretty much came true judging by our actions thus far.
    We dun Gouf'd.

    >[X] Shit, i didn't know.
and that's the problem. I didn't even think to ask. None of us on the team did, even though there was a big issue with not holding stuff back. I have not been a good friend, but I'm going to try and be there for you in the future, so please if there is anything else you need, please tell me. I want to help you when you need it Laurie. That's what friends should do.

    or somthing like that

    "....Come on, let's go home."

He nods, and as he stands up, he grabs the bottle next to him. He holds it and stares at it for a long moment, like he's weighing something deep down inside.

Then he spins on his heel and throws it against the far wall so hard it explodes. "Yeah, let's go. I'm already sick of this place."

As the two of you walk back to the car, he looks at you "I'm guessing that whether you want Mooch or me on your team, you're going to want the other on overwatch whenever you can swing it. Tourney starts tomorrow right?"

    "Tomorrow afternoon."

"If it's alright with you, I'd like to borrow Mooch for a little bit. Go for a little ride in his chopper."

".... I want to go back. Say goodbye for real. Shouldn't take more than a few hours if we fly and aren't baby-sitting a huge, slow moving caravan. I think that I should try and put my ghosts to rest before we do anything else big."

    [ ] Yeah, alright.
[ ] Want me to go with?
[ ] Can it wait until after the Tourney?
    [ ] Other.
    >> Asukafag 04/23/12(Mon)06:16 No.18826922
    [x] Yeah, alright.
This'll be good for him, and there's no reason not to let him go.
    >> Billy Johnson 04/23/12(Mon)06:17 No.18826927

How many can moochs chopper carry? I think it would be good to bring the rest of the team with us if we can, just so we all get a reminder of what we're fighting for.

Any chance we could take a Core along? I have no problem with letting Laurie pay his respects, and it's probably a good idea to do it ASAP rather than delaying and causing more problems, but I have a bad feeling about this, too.

    [X] Other

We all have our goodbyes to make, some of the rest of us might end up coming along, we all lost a lot and we never got a chance to pay our respects.

and I want you on the arena team so don't be late (said nicely)
Laurie is still other people's first choice for arena team mate right? if not ignore the last bit.
    >> Anonymous 04/23/12(Mon)06:21 No.18826954
Oh, by the way, the thread is autosaging. We should wrap it up, I guess.
    >> AC-Guy 04/23/12(Mon)06:25 No.18826978
"Yeah, alright. You'd have to ask him about it, but I'm fine with it."

    "Thanks. So what's next?"

"I'm guessing you don't want to really talk to everybody back at the base about what happened. I guess the only thing to do is make the Arena team line-up official and go in to sign paperwork."

"Made up your mind on the teams then?"
