You are a P-61 Black Widow pilot of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, and you've currently got an 18-year old girl who could rip your spine in half with her bare hands looking at you like she wants to rip your leg off and fuck you with it.

You're not sure which you'd prefer, if forced to choose.

"What... is so... 'weird' about my sister?" Trude asks you and Minna. "What aren't you telling me!?"

Your mother once told you that honesty is the best policy, which in this case would equal admitting you kept a horrible, dark truth about her little sister to a girl who could beat you to death with your own arms, whilst screaming 'STOP HITTING YOURSELF!' in a terrifyingly cold voice.

On the other he- hand, she did kiss you once and weepy consolation sex can be pretty hot. If you all survive the impending Martian invasion long enough for that, that is.

IT BEGINS. Posting my paranoia from last thread.

    1. Chris has been in a coma for along time
    2. Aliens are broadcasting Psi signals
    3. Sanya succumbed to the signals in a few days and she only caught a bit of the full magnitude.

    1. Chris wasn't abducted, she woke up under alien control and escaped the hospital.
    2. The buzz bombs were sent to wipe out all evidence.
    3. Chris is now hiding somewhere in the vicinity of London
    4. If Chris is awake that means she can actively fight back against the controlling signals.
    5. The aliens turned the signals up to 11, to maintain control or to... provide power?

    1. The aliens mounted a massive assault on Britain. But this isn't just a straight up attack, this is a EXTRACTION. And we need to stop it fucking ASAP or Chris is never coming back.
    2. If we triangulate the beams and locate ground zero, we find Chris.
    3. If the transmitters are destroyed the signals weaken.

Above is my INCOMPLETE alternate-history timeline. I was finally able to get up to the actual Martian invasion, but I haven't laid out some of the socio-political underpinnings very well yet, (though it's implied pretty heavily in most of it,) and some "canon" answers I've given in threads I have to hunt down again and put in there (like who runs France, Mussolini's fate, stuff like that,) and there's probably hella errors and stuff. BUT AT LEAST IT IS SOMETHING TO WORK WITH. Nothing is set in stone, so you other authors take it as inspiration materiel to fuel your own demented pantsu-plane fics. Contributions that are deemed better then my own timeline will inevitably become canon when my pissweak postulations are shouted down by the overwhelming majority of laughing anons, so don't sweat it.

Guys, I've been thinking about how the aliums react to airborne radar. You know how whenever an airborne set of radar lights up, they're drawn to it like moths to a fire? I was thinking about how they react to airborne sets like that and not land or sea based ones.

What if the Martians...what if they communicate via natural biological radio waves? And a radar set lit in the air fucks with that like no other? Expanding on that, you know how they manage to regulate the energy of their masers and such invisibly? What if they use natural radio waves to do that too, and an airborne set makes it dangerous for them to even control or operate their fighters?

It would also explain why they can fuck with/are interested in radio-magic witches. They're already had lots of experience with radio waves by just studying themselves, much more than humanity has, so it stands to reason that they are interested in magical radio waves. It would also explain why Sanya got fucked up; she's had her head stuck in the alium tacnet for the past three days. I mean, with all of those images of the targets that got hit, it makes sense.

    (now with paragraph breaks!)

Like the brave and selfless fighter pilot you are, you emit a weak cry and duck behind Minna.

"Nothing's weird at all! I thought it was weird because I'm stupid and dumb but Minna has it all figured out and Chris is totally kosher like a dill-pickle! Ha! Hahaha!" you stammer.

"... what?" Trude says, utterly baffled.

You peek out over Minna's shoulder. "I SEE NOTHING!"

    Trude's eyes narrow. "Tell me."

Trude takes several large steps forward, her eyes aflame. "TELL ME!"

"I KNOW NOOOOTHING!" you scream, grabbing Minna's arms and holding her in front of you like a shield.

"Trude," Minna says, holding up her hands. "Trude, Chris is alive."

"... what?" Trude says, looking stunned.

"They dug out her hospital bed and she wasn't in it. With all the combat in the last few days, nobody had time to tell you, and we didn't want you jumping to any crazy theories."

"But... if... if she wasn't in her bed-" Trude gasps in horror, her hands flying to her mouth. "No. No. God no." She falls to her knees, clutching her arms around her. "Chris... oh God, Chris..."

Minna kneels next to Trude, putting a hand on her shoulder, which Trude shrugs off. She winds up and slaps Minna, who makes no effort to avoid or stop the blow. "YOU LIED! YOU LIED!" Minna looks at the ground, accepting the accusation with no complaint. Withholding the truth was lying, of a sort, after all. Trude is swelling with grief and anger and all sorts of emotional poison, and Minna seems willing to let her friend expend it on her rather then herself.

You stand there awkwardly as Trude slaps Minna around. Two comrades, their friendship forged in the heat and tragedy of war, one selflessly taking a beating to heal the tragedy-rent soul of her beloved friend. It's the kind of intensely selfless, personal moment that would stir the soul and seize the tongue of any decent man.

So of course you open your big fat fucking mouth.

"You're a fucking idiot," you say.

Trude's red, tear-filled eyes turn to you with sudden fury, and she lurches off the ground, her hand coming back to plow through your face-

"MILITARY hopsital, Trude! They lost her! They put her in the wrong fucking bed or the wrong fucking WARD! Since when has any military been able to find ANYthing or ANYbody? They can't find their own ass with BOTH HANDS!"

Trude freezes in place, her mouth dropping open in a surprised little "o".

"Jesus, where do I start? I was issued a forty-five caliber pistol and thirty-eight caliber speedloaders! I was issued boots two sizes too small and a peacoat three sizes too large AND THE COATS ONLY COME IN ONE FUCKING SIZE!" you rage. "I was issued a mess kit with no fork, a plane with no PROPELLERS and once we had a field-kitchen - FIELD KITCHEN - with electric hot-plates, all-canned rations and NO FUCKING CAN OPENERS!" You're panting now, your long-suppressed hatred bubbling and roiling.

For the record, I'm not making that up. This actually happened to Robert Lee Scott, who flew a P-40 with the Flying Tigers. He wrote about it in his book, God Is My Co-Pilot. Nearly had his ass blown off by it when he bombed a bridge in China; a conveniently-placed hill saved his ass by absorbing the blast. He gets back to base and they're like "ten second fuse? Though you wanted a TENTH-second fuse!"

    They actually had tenth-second fuses.

By having the fuse only light after a certain number of rotations of the device after it's armed, or by causing the fuse to light only after it strikes a surface.

Then Trude punches you in the jaw.

You spin around three times on your heel and drop into the grass like a sack of potatoes. The crushed box of hated Chesterfields still gripped in your clawlike hand, you lay on your back in the grass, tittering madly.

"You STILL should have told me!" Trude yells down at you, face still tear-streaked, but those awful heaving sobs have stopped, and she looks more tired then anything.

    "Trude!" Minna yells. "Trude, stop!"

"Why should I!" she exclaims, rounding on Minna. "You kept it from me, too!"

You miss the rest of the conversation, because you're kind of dizzy and disoriented and filled with a hot, hot hate. People talk around you, somebody lifts you, others drag you, but all you can see is Logistics officers, in their offices, smoking your Lucky Strikes, petting huge fat white cats while they chew through Spam, REAL Spam, spelled with an "a" as they laugh and laugh and laugh it up, crushing little pilots scampering about their desk with the burning end of their cigarettes.

And lurking in the back of your thoughts, in the dark places you never admit exist... is fear.

Ants have developed slavery. Ants also have no real command structure, they're more like a hive-mind, meaning you can NEVER stop a colony from functioning unless you kill every last ant. Ants are also fiercely devoted, and only care about the good of the colony, and if the colony decides that biting and stinging you is in its best interest, they will all gladly throw their lives away trying to accomplish just that.

You've never really feared death, past the primal biological level, which means your brain-stem is considerably smarter then you are in that regard. In an academic sense you know you're a fool, but you don't really *know* it. And you know that, too. Or something? Who cares. But dying in the prime of life, when your eyes are still sharp and your muscles still strong never seemed like a bad way to go. In the air, every second counts, every drop of gasoline burned, every joule of energy spent or gained, every round fired. Your fate is literally in your hands, the throttle and the yoke. Happiness is granted to those who accept their fate, but glory to those who defy it - and you defy gravity, logic, authority, chain-of-command and most recently socio-political norms concerning the supernatural almost as naturally as breathing. Hell, you can't seem to stop, even if you try. The equation was never hard for you to figure. Better to Live for ten years then die over sixty, chained to a desk and a suit and a boring, safe job....

But not for your friends. Sean has a sharp wit and a real talent for seeing what others do not, in any situation. Ian is brilliant, and one of the most decent men you know. Sanya has her father's musical talent, and more besides - and she's only 15. You live in the moment and ask for nothing more, but they have a future ahead of them.

    They have something to lose.

And if you let them come to harm, then your worst fear will be realized. You won't be the creature of Now, already fulfilled, in-the-moment. Then you'd be a useless shitbag who lived because a better person died.

It can't happen. It must NOT happen. You must be, forever, what you are - an elemental spirit of the air, a warrior forged in fire and wind, burning brightly until you burn out. Not a desperate man with no fucking idea what he's actually doing, flailing for solutions before the situation overwhelms him. You live fast and you *must* die young, or it's all for naught.

Which is probably why you're scared shitless of Mi-

Somebody else is trying to shove nasty-smelling crap up your nose, waving it around like it's an amulet or something. You feel angry for no reason and every reason at the same time. As your woozy thoughts careen around your skull, you realize that you've came tantalizingly close to a revelation about yourself... but just like a dream right after waking, you can't quite recall what it was. On the tip of your brain, as it were.

But the more pressing matter is that sumbitch who woke you up and the loud-mouthed wop sprite and her high-pitched voice spearing through your skull.

You seize the little jar of smelling-salts and, aiming by audio, hurl it at Zuuchini.

You sit up and blink blearily.

Looking around, you spot your flight jacket hanging off a nearby chair, and you start groping for it.

"ARrgchchc *cough!*" Luuchini begins choking as the fumes of the smelling-salts overtake her. Shirley steps in and pulls off her uniform jacket, with great difficulty because Luuchini refuses to stop squirming on olfactory panic.

"Right, what'd I miss?" you query blearily.

"Trude got pretty grabby with your-" there's the sound of a sharp slap, and a hoot of triumph mingles with somebody else's snort of rage.

"Alright, uh, here's the thing," you say to nobody in particular. "I've got a plan."

You stand up, swaying a little, but feeling just fine otherwise. You almost fall over putting your jacket on, but manage it without dying. Because you're twenty years old and a fighter pilot, and American, so you're invincible and immortal twice. Adrenaline crash, combat fatigue, sleep deprivation and human endurance limits are things that happen to infantry or other plebes, not pilots.

"Okay," you say vaguely. "Okay. Guys."

"Chris has nothing to do with this whole thing, but she's got everything to do with it, but by total accident," you say intelligently, then beam at everybody as they absorb your brilliant summation of the situation.

"That makes no sense," Trude says. "You don't know anything."

"HEY!" you say, your head snapping around to glare at Trude. "Who invited you?"

    "Invited? What the hell-"

Tell them we think Chris might not be missing, but captured, and remind them that the Martians have been on an all-out blitz to capture sparklies for the last couple of weeks... and they're using subs, just like they did when they attacked the castle.

Solution: Track the beams. Hunt down the Martians. Check bubblegum. And we Chris is there, we save her sparkly tail, because THAT'S WHAT WE DO.

"I- I'M NOT GOING ANYWHERE!" Trude roars at you.

"MY EYES ARE ON FIRE!" Zuuchini is screeching.

Okay. Okay. Bravado isn't working. Time for the rapier-quick tip of piercing intellect.

"Alright, Miss Hallucination," you growl, "I've got your number. I read that book by that Roman dude, Epictits."

    Trude blinks.

The German Witch takes a small step away from you, looking flustered.

"Epictetus. Epictetus! Yeah. He was like, to every harsh appearance, be ready to say, get the hell out or I'll punch your shit!" You lunge for this sassy loudmouthed punchy construct of your traitorous mind, but strong arms loop under yours and pin you in place, preventing your attack.

"Just take a deep breath, dammit!" somebody says in Minna's voice. "You're out of it!"

"Meh," you say, your head too woozy to make excessive struggling much fun. "Why does my self-control get such an awesome rack?"

Your entire brain shuts up immediately. Finally. Yeah, answer me that one, you fucking BRAIN.

Your brain goes rather insane after that. The details are a bit sketchy, but you hear Eila in a loud argument with Self-Control over "honest appraisals" and how nobody should be punished for them, Morality keeps on shooting you poisonous, hateful looks from his little booth as Perrine snuggles into his shoulder, and your libido is bouncing all over the room, still screaming bloody blue murder.

Finally, you end up at a corner table with a bottle of strong whiskey and Pragmatism.

"So I'm your pragmatic side?" Pragmatism asks you. "What makes you think that?"

"You're half-fucking blind," you reply instantly, pointing at Pragmatism's eyepatch. She starts sniggering rudely, smothering her giggles under her palm.

"And, uh, who's..." she glances sideways at the rest of the room. "... Who's your libido?"

You think Pragmatism's one free eye is about to pop out of her head.

"Annoying bitch is always popping up at the worst possible time," you grumble, sipping at your whiskey as you slide a nasty look towards Libido.

    "And who's common sense?"

You give her an even look, then jerk your thumb at where Self-Control is trying to comfort screaming, caterwauling Libido and failing miserably.

    "I'm sorry, who?"

"So, what's all this about Chris, and these mysterious signals, and all that?"

Finally. Somebody you can talk to. You clutch your whiskey closer and confide in Pragmatism.

"Right. So Chris wasn't in her hospital bed, right? Maybe the Army lost track of her, maybe not; but we saw that Sanya's head was invaded by Martian... whatever, enough to make her go batshit loco on Self-Control over there. Only when she was asleep, though, with her mental defenses down. Chris Barkhorn has been unconscious for almost a year, right? An even better candidate for that kind of thing." You look at the ceiling, rubbing your head. "But Sanya wasn't deliberately targeted for control, or anything."

Pragatism frowns. "What makes you so sure?"

"She was receiving random images of the targeted areas. But only the ones that had those tele-bots planted at them for a second kick-in-the-ass. I think those signals ARE the control mechanism, as well as some sort of targeting or guidance method. Those rocket-bombs were far too accurate. I think that's why the ones me and Perrine fought were carrying parasite-fighters; they made room by ditching the usual guidance module. Literal beam-riders."

"So what happened to Chris?" Pragmatism asks.

You lean forward. "Sanya just got grazed by one of those beams. Chris is near or under a conflux, and more vulnerable. She got the full brunt, the aliens could've taken her over completely, deliberately or inadvertently, or perhaps she slept-walked right out, because her unconscious KNEW what was coming."

"You seem to be taking a lot on faith," Sakamoto says dubiously. "I mean, how do you know what the Martian's can and can't do? Especially since these signals, as you said before, seem to be influenced by... psionics?"

"Fffffffuck Psionics," you slur through another mouthful of whiskey. "God damn, you're a fucking Witch and you still think this psionisis shit is so mysterious? You put magic into a literal magic engine, you juice up a shield-generator with magic; even Night Witches put out signals that we can pick up on ordinary radar or radio, even though they're powered by magic. The Martians can bend physics but they can't screw 'em gently and sneak out without paying, woman!" You slap your shot glass on the table for emphasis. "My point is, the signals cross north of London, the aliums be pushing the South, and that spells flanking maneuver. Chris is largely coincidental, I think. Revelatory of what's going on, yeah, but not the goal, I'd think. The world doesn't revolve around me or you or Trude just because we're pilots, you know."

Sakamoto gasps and rocks back in her chair.

"I know I *know,*" you say, shooting a look at Perrine. "Jesus, don't let Ego hear, she'll go fucking medieval on our asses." You try to fill your glass again and only manage to soak the table instead, missing with several pours.

"So that's it?" Pragmatism says after she recovers. She leans over and takes the whiskey from you, quite pragmatically, of course. "Some beams are crossing north of London and Chris is missing, so something is probably up?"

"That's all we can know for SURE," you reply. "I mean, psionic this and that, and Chris having magical talent in her bloodline... she could be walking around like a portable beacon, under full alien control... but I dunno." You glance around the room suspiciously. "Between you and me, Pragmatism? The pragmatic thing to do is fly out there and kick the nest till something stirs, then murder the FUCK out of it."

Pragmatism nods sagely. "Excuse me, I'm going to stuff a rag in Libido's mouth."

If the invasion is just a distraction for whatever they're really planning.

As a Journalism major, I should really care about this more, but for some reason, I never do. I just can't feel guilty about it. "It's" when "its" should be used? Drives me nucking futs. But that? Still can't care. I don't know why.

    You wake up.

"WHAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH THAT TICKLES HAHA OH GOD OH GOD SPIDERS SPIDERS SPIDERS SPIDERS SPIDERS!" you scream, leaping off a table with aclarity, tearing your jacket off and swatting yourself all over.

"Sorry, man," Sean says from nearby as he uncorks a bottle with his teeth. "Gay doesn't come off that easy. You're twinkle-toed from birth, no known cure."

"Sha-a-a-aaaaaahahahahaha," your retort breaks down. Your entire body is tingling and it feels like electricity is playing over your skin, It's ticklish as hell and driving you absolutely nuts, but it is subsiding. Minna is standing nearby, looking carefully neutral. Sakamoto looks on somewhat warily.

"Uh..." you rub your head. "Uh, sorry about the beer thing. It was kind of an emergency?" You glance over at Ian's booth, and from your angle you can see that Perrine has moved to the bench opposite your gunner, and she's sipping at the huge stein daintily, the small girl looking faintly ridiculous trying to be mannered with such an ungainly staple of English working-class chugging.

"I, uh, um." You stammer, rubbing your head. "So Trude punched me."

"She got over it," Minna says.

    "Uh, did we-"

"Your theory over the Martain thing? Yeah, we got all of it."

You nod. "So... what are we going to do?"

"We're going to go over there," Minna says, "and we're going to beat things with a stick till the nest of nasties stirs up."

You grin. "That's the first sensible order I've heard you give."

Sakamoto and Minna trade a Wry Look. Well screw them and screw their mysteries. You've got a war to win.

Oh? Oooh. Well. It's nothing spectacular or plot-advancing. Minna just gave MC the magical equivalent of a mid-air refueling.

And inadvertently revealed that Witches know a shitload more about their own magic then they publicize, and that most of the young Witches don't know it because they were hastily drafted as-needed...
    >> Anonymous 03/01/12(Thu)23:07 No.18169059
We already got our bit of eavesdropping. We know that witches know about gnomes and that some even got training into them. And Minna did something to MC that has him up and running like a boss.

My own theory is that advanced gnomery kills the user with time (which is why Minna was so reluctant to use it) but shit, isn't that what MC wants? Going out with a blaze of glory? It could be something else, but I'm not particularly interested at this point, I want to see the gang go kick alium butt.

Going into his brain like that could make how we actually feel about her more explicit, and she's worried that we really do care about her more than we let on and how that might affect her ability to do her job in potentially ordering us to our death.
