You are Seymon Rivers, one of the many bastard sons produced by Lord Walder Frey. You have recently been "volunteered" to join the esteemed and venerable brotherhood of the Night's Watch after a brief yet enjoyable dalliance with one of your father's younger brides was unfortunately made public.

You are three days north of the Wall on your first ranging when you are rudely awakened in the middle of the night by the whinnying of horses. You should be sharing your tent with two other newly sworn brothers; Cressius (a scrawny young Lannister bastard with rotten teeth) and Andhun (a middle aged Dornishman with an enviably thick mustache), but they are gone. There's one other tent on the other side of the firepit where Osric the Ranger (the leader of your party), should be sleeping. Your horses are tied up about fifty yards from your camp.

You slept with your sword by your bedroll, but your armor and shield are outside your tent, by the firepit.

    What do you do?
    >> Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)09:14 No.17025046
Draw my blade, then try to hear what's going on in camp/peer through the fabric of the tent/peep through a sliver of the opening.

    All three things.
    >> OP 11/26/11(Sat)09:17 No.17025055

You can see your leather armor hanging from a tree branch, drying off the day's rain by the fire; your mail shirt and shield piled on you pack beside it.

There is no sign of Cressius and Andhun, but you can hear sounds of a struggle coming from Osric's tent.
    >> Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)09:17 No.17025059
Slip out of the tent as quietly as possible, to assess the Osric situation and whether or not I have enough time to arm myself properlly.
    >> OP 11/26/11(Sat)09:21 No.17025074

You don't see anyone around as you slip out of the tent, but you hear a muffled scream and a few wet-sounding thumps from the direction of Osric's tent.

There are a half-dozen different footprints in the dirt around your campsite, many of them unfamiliar to you.
    >> Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)09:23 No.17025085

The horses are gone, though you can clearly see hoofprints in the dirt leading away from the camp.

As you struggle into your still slightly-damp leather armor, you see a fur-clad wildling leave the Ranger's tent with a bloody axe, breathing hard and wiping a spatter of blood from his cheek.

He seems surprised to see you awake, but not so surprised he can't fling his axe at you.

    You could:

    a) Drop to the ground (Full Evasion, TN 4, 5 dice)

    b) Try to dodge it (Partial evasion, TN 7, 5 dice)

    c) block it with your shield (Missile Block, TN 8, 5 dice)

    d)do something else.
    >> OP 11/26/11(Sat)09:29 No.17025130

Your seemingly suicidal headlong rush pays off, as the axe flies harmlessly over your head

The wildling yanks a short-sword from his belt and screams "DIE, you fucking kneeler bastard!"

    Red or white?

(For those who don't know, this will determine whether you take the offense or the defense. Going white is generally considered to be safer, but if he has friends, you might want to go red and gut the fucker quickly)

    >> OP 11/26/11(Sat)09:37 No.17025188

    He throws red as well.

Since both of us went red, we first both declare our attack, then work out who goes first with a contested Reflex roll. If you lose you can buy initiative, so it's always a good idea to save back a few dice to buy it - buying initiative costs your opponent's Perception in dice.

His Ref is lower, so he declares first - a thrust at your groin for 5 dice.

His eyes widen as he sees the attack coming. In desperation, he tries to get his thrust in first, rolling his Reflex number of dice (4) against his ATN (5, for a short-sword)

You need to declare whether you're cutting or thrusting, which will determine the TN of 6 or 7 for the test, then roll your Reflex of 5 against it.

...You could just let him hit you. 4 dice from B&S's defense plus your armor pretty much guarantees his attack won't hurt. Meanwhile, he's about to take an inescapable 8 dice of pain.

Here's an overview. Basically, you take out of your CP however many dice you want for a terrain roll and roll them against a TN. Beating both of your attackers means you get to choose which of them you fight. Losing to both means you have to fight both. Losing to one means that one gets to choose whether he fights you or not.

I would highly advise you to put aside 3 CP for a terrain roll at an utter minimum. Fighting 2 guys at once in RoS is not fun.

    >Cut at andhun's head with 7 dice.

You're both going red, so you'll need to win initiative. Also, due to his range advantage you can only attack him for 6 dice.

He tries to get his swing in first, rolling his Reflex (4) against his ATN (6)

You need to roll your reflex (5) against your ATN (6)

Wait, so we both have arming swords, but he doesn't have a shield?

We bash him with it. He can't block a shield bash with a sword, and the evasions don't give you initiative if you win.

OK, he's going to Partial evade for 7, paying the extra 2 to steal initiative on a success.

The TN for Shield Bashing with a small shield is 6. Roll away

Really good thread, OP. It's good to see Galt pop his head in too.

I suggest that we Simultaneously block and strike - try and smother him before he has time to react. Keep a few dice in reserve though.

He dodges back, expecting the shield to be just a feint; expecting the sword. But he doesn't deserve the quick mercy of a blade. You slam the boss of your shield into his cheek and the force of the blow runs up your arm as his skull caves in.

Shields do SB +1, which in this case is six damage. Add the MoS to that and you're looking at 10 points of damage.

Presumably he had a TO of 5; decent, but not enough to soak that.
