Ok, first we're gonna do some character creation then we're going to throw said character at some fleshy targets!

Character generation information in the next post...
    >> Kzyrgis 09/08/11(Thu)12:48 No.16226159
Ok well first things first, let's pick a character concept.
Any ideas? if you guys are uninspired then I can give you a choice...

I have no idea what that first on is, so we'll go with the kung fu mofo.

ok, now we have our target, we can get down to the mechanics of character building. This is how you're build a character for a campaign.

First, we need to work out what out Priorities are.
Now I'm saying this guy's gonna be human, which sorts out our F Priority, so now you guys need to work out the other 5. You have 5 other priorities above F, from highest at A to lowest at E.

Assign those priorities depending on which of these following character aspects is most/least important to you.
    Social Class
    Gifts and Flaws
the effects of each assigned priority are in the attatched table...

Proficiencies, attributes, gifts, skills, social class

social class D, gifts at C, take the little flaw.
    Be a wee free man.

    Social Class
    Gifts and Flaws

    My 2 cents
    >> Kzyrgis 09/08/11(Thu)13:14 No.16226345
Hmm, so I'm hearing Gifts at C and Social Class at D, now the other options need 2 of the same vote to go through!
Attributes, Proficiencies and Skills still left to have at least 1 deciding vote.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/11(Thu)13:31 No.16226463
    how odd
TROS threads have been going off splendidly lately, dunno why it's so quiet around this here thread.

    anyway, I posted >>16226300
So since nobody is sayin' anything, I'll reiterate my choice for stats. I admit that I have no idea what the difference between skills and proficiencies is though.
Is one combat and one social?

we could go proficiencies A (just, you know, to vary a bit. the char creation system is broken, leads always to the same choices... or maybe we've fallen in a rut) and get 2 weapons, melee and ranged.
    >> Kzyrgis 09/08/11(Thu)13:49 No.16226613
    ok, that's Proficiency A
and as we have less activity, let's have Attributes B and Skills E.

well lets deal with the gifts and flaws first shall we?

I just want to address a couple things from the end of last thread, really quick.

    >leave only a narrow space at the side of the neck.

That's sort of all you really need. A horizontal swing would, were it not for that shield, be a severe threat--as would a forward thrust. I've also never seen a scarf around the neck depicted--if it existed, I imagine it was most common in Judea.

    >We also have records of legionaries armouring their lead leg's shin.

I've heard this several times. Do you have a picture to reference this? Because I have never actually SEEN it. Almost every depiction I've seen has shown legionary regulars with completely bare legs, and only officers with greaves.

I will say though that Roman steel wasn't shitty in the least, though. It was actually pretty solid stuff since they got it from the same source as the Spanish did centuries later.

He should have been a great hero. A brilliant crusader. A flower of chivalry.
He should never back down from a just cause, or helping an old ally.
He should ride into battle with his horse chained between that of two of his knights.
He should be hacked down in a viscious and desperate battle by mere peasantry. His coat of arms should be stolen by the enemy's nobility.
He should be the damned blind King of Bohemia.

    >..for all that he was nigh blind, when he understood the order of the battle, he said to them about him: 'Where is the lord Charles my son?' His men said: 'Sir, we cannot tell; we think he be fighting.' Then he said: 'Sirs, ye are my men, my companions and friends in this journey: I require you bring me so far forward, that I may strike one stroke with my sword.' They said they would do his commandment, and to the intent that they should not lose him in the press, they tied all their reins of their bridles each to other and set the king before to accomplish his desire, and so they went on their enemies. The lord Charles of Bohemia his son, who wrote himself king of Almaine and bare the arms, he came in good order to the battle; but when he saw that the matter went awry on their party, he departed, I cannot tell you which way. The king his father was so far forward that he strake a stroke with his sword, yea and more than four, and fought valiantly and so did his company; and they adventured themselves so forward, that they were there all slain, and the next day they were found in the place about the king, and all their horses tied each to other.
    >According to the Cronica ecclesiae pragensis benesii krabice de weitmile, before he died at the Battle of Crécy, he said: "With God's help it will never be that a Bohemian king would run from a fight!"

Large fights are a bit more complicated than usual, but I maintain that they are some of the best done of any game I've ever played.

The only real complication as I see it is that there's no order in which to move through each of the mini-combats that would make up every brawl. Just having everyone go through on exchange makes sense, but sometimes these effect each other, and there should be a way to keep them from entangling up, or someone taking an extra exchange by accident and pushing ahead in time somehow.

As for the gender business... I'm not seeing it. Women are slightly better at handling groin shots, but even then the amount of shock and pain being done to the same area is enough to doom anyone in the next exchange.

I shall upload a big ass file of the scanned .jpgs of every page, except for the sorcery section, overnight tonight. I cannot do better than that, because my connection sucks and cleaning up the pictures takes about five minutes per page. With Photoshop macros and everything.

After than, I might scan the sorcery section, for completeness. In any case, I hope to have a beautiful .pdf out by the end of next week.

True. But at the same time, this is not the finished .pdf. This is me going 'Yes, I am still working on it. Here, have the fruits of my labours thus far, just in case I disappear off the face of the earth.'
At the moment, most of the images need to be re-sized (83%), cropped (2275x3000) and have their levels fiddled with / things unskewed. Then I'll see about changing the quality and re-sizing them again for .pdf. Believe me, adjusting centre-fold-shadow is a lot easier at a big resolution.

Ahh yes! Now I have an extra special treat for you lot regarding the Samurai. I've been trying to work out how to stat a Naginata.

I figured the Samurai (who's an old member of my personal stock, and thus has a name,) should either have a bow or a polearm. I settled on polearm because Sulla doesn't need to get shot at again, he needs a real melee fight!

Naginata seemed sensible. So as to stat it out, I felt that the FoB's analogy of it being similar to the Falx was unfair, and I've taken my own steps to stat one out.

Now, some might disagree with me here, but I feel that the best analogy for Naginata combat that I've seen is Poleaxe fighting. If it were possible, i'd suggest giving this thing a Draw Cut of +2, but there's no real precedent of that with polearms.

Anyway, it'll use the Poleaxe proficiency, since that seems convenient.

For whatever reason, they decided not to include glaives. The closest they've got are Partisans, to me, those feel more like those Japanese spears with the huge cross-pieces just below the tip.

Sulla has just pronounced himself the greatest warrior to have ever lived (perhaps presumptuous, but at the time it seemed like a fair claim) by roaring throughout eternity his victory over the Italian.

However, a sound whispers out from behind him. As though answering his shout, a different sort of gate as opened.

From it falls the decapitated corpse of some sort of steppelander, and over the body steps a bizarrely armored man, with a vicious curved polearm, still dripping arterial gore, and a fierce war-mask held in his off-hand.

The two make eye contact, briefly, before the Samurai sets his mask back on, and falls into fighting stance.

Sulla has no weapon out, and one remaining Pilum. There is another javelin about 2-3 yards away.

The enemy is 10 yards away.

    Heaven or Hell?

With a good Reflex roll, Sulla might be able to get the Pilum out and whip it at the guy before he can close the distance, but it'd be a pretty poor shot. Proficiency only, maybe with a few penalties for movement and rush, etc.

Still doable, the downside would be that if the Samurai gets in, Sulla is going to have to spend a turn pulling his sword out. A scary place to be.

My guess (from the fighting in gaul, and that Sulla is wearing lorica hamata rather than segmentata) is that we're only a very recently post Marian Reform legionary. The plumbata hasn't replaced the pilum yet. Heck, both Pilum are probably about the same size, too, instead of the larger and smaller ones that got popular soon after the reforms.
    >> John Galt 09/08/11(Thu)20:59 No.16230557
Alright, let's say it'll come down to a Reflex test.

If Sulla can make a Reflex at TN 8, he'll be able to throw that javelin before the Samurai can close with him. The Samurai will get to dodge, but only with his Reflex.

If the Samurai survives this, however, Sulla will have no weapon out for the first exchange.

    So: Sulla's Reflex at 8.

Hold on, I'll copypaste Sulla's stats from the last thread.

Drawing a weapon with haste, and speeding up the readying of throwing is a Difficulty 8 Reflex test.

Now granted, there's no hard and fast ruling on how to handle a guy racing to get a missile weapon out, and another racing to get to melee range.

My justification is that the Samurai hasn't survived this many rounds by going Red/Red. He's expecting this new enemy to attack him, not the other way around, and upon seeing the javelin come out and raise, it's a bit too late to beat it to the punch.

It helps that the Pilum is a very weird looking weapon. It might take a second to even realize that it's a javelin and not some sort of barbarian melee weapon. So his plan as of now is to try and avoid the throw and close the distance, rather than risk getting impaled while charging.

Okay, sounds about right. Though waiting for the opponent to get any weapon is surprisingly... honorable. Why not ? Or maybe our right hand was hidden behind the shield.

    Hope one success suffices ?
    >> John Galt 09/08/11(Thu)21:14 No.16230726
Alright! Sulla doesn't bungle pulling the javelin out.

Now he can only throw the javelin with his basic Prof (10) at 10 yards range.

So, that's -2 from his pool for range, and another -1 for the movement of the target, and let's say a -2 for how fast this is happening.

So, Sulla's got 5 dice at difficulty 6 to try and skewer the Samurai.

The Samurai also has Reflex 7, and will Partial Evade at 7.

    Sulla: 5 at 6
    Samurai: 7 at 7

There are ways around shields, even in this very shield-centric game.
For example, if you have a huge reach advantage, you can basically force the shielding enemy to stay eternally on the defensive and tempt him into overextending.

Let's say 1. It's a short weapon after all, and the Romans wore the gladius specifically so that they could draw it without disrupting their shields by reaching across the chest.

Going White might be the best call, with the enemy's reach and unknown combat pool. Probing the enemy's capabilities is a good idea before you take action. I'll observe a bit more before we decide.

It's very easy to slip your leg below the knee - just pull it back for the briefest of moments and then let it fall down again before you fall over.

Slipping your thigh and knee on the other hand involves turning at the hip, which seriously fucks up balance. It involves lifting your weight onto the other leg and shifting your centre of gravity around.

Most of the time you're better off taking a proper step to void the strike, like a passing step backwards.

And, of course, the standard response is to overrun their attack - the length from your shoulder to their head is less than that from their shoulder to your knee/leg, on account of hypoteneuse and stuff. So if someone goes for a leg shot, your best bet is to slip or step it back while at the same time whacking them on the head.

    Regardless of weapon or system.

No idea if that translates into the game...

The problem with Beat is that we couldn't expect to succeed by much, and... removing the Samurai's naginata from the blocking game doesn't actually make him any easier to hit.

It is exactly as easy to Partial Evade as it is to parry with a naginata.

I don't think it says, but Beat halves all range penalties. I would apply a similar reasoning here, since it's about grabbing the weapon, not the actual enemy.

I'm not sure how one disarms a polearm user with a gladius and a shield, though. Should Sulla drop his shield to try this? Sword & Shield does specify that it can be done with a shield, but at a slightly higher activation cost.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/11(Thu)22:05 No.16231339
If I was sulla, I'd try to bash the naginata aside with the shield and slide up the shaft.

    >> John Galt 09/08/11(Thu)22:07 No.16231353
    Ahh, I know this.
Shield Bashes cannot be parried, only blocked. Large Shields bash at ATN 7, but we have allowed for the Scuttom (which was designed very specifically for bashing) to do it at 6, like a smaller shield. Damage is St+1.

Range is... Hand. It would be a 3-die activation cost to make it happen, for range, but aside from that it's a normal attack.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/11(Thu)22:08 No.16231368

    -Bind & Strike
-Shield Bash (maybe with 10 dice, or 14 depending on ambitiousness.)

All are possible. If I were a betting man, I'd go with Shield Bash or the Bind & Strike. Disarm relies too much upon the Samurai's knockdown, which could be a problem.

One wraps ones sword arm around the haft of the polearm, while smacking the Samurai in the face with the shield, then uses ones back muscles to wrench on it, or stab him in the face at the same time. IIRC Talhoffer has the same technique for longsword, messer and lance.

Stop Short is a pretty cool maneuver, but I don't think it will help us much here. It basically can't cost him too many dice more than it costs us.
We're just lowering both of our pools, and we need pool in order to murderize this thug.

I hate to say it, but there's not much for us to do until we're at high range, except keep bashing and trying to get up his ass.

14 dice on the bash would force him to either commit everything, or close to it, and still won't guarantee his safety.

BTW, we have now basically confirmed that the Samurai's CP is 19.

Wait a sec. Sulla's Willpower is really good, and the Samurai has a helmet with a mask, meaning he gets -2 Perception.

That means that we're probably rolling at difficulty 2 or 3, whereas if we spend 3 dice on it, the Samurai is rolling at a flat difficulty 10.

I retract my statement, YES. We should do Stop Short. We could easily cost this guy 4 or 5 dice, while only spending 3 ourselves, and retaining the initiative.

The night is young, I say new thread.

I think we'll be fine. We're on the home stretch here, maybe we can squeeze one more in. Worst case scenario, I can set the stage and get a new thread going.

    Makin' now.

You're both wrong. It wasn't luck, and it wasn't cheese. He was fighting with a weapon that absolutely required that he keep us at range, and he couldn't see for shit. It was his weakness and we exploited it by charging in past his polearm where he couldn't see us very well and doing something unexpected to throw him off balance.

No. Maybe we're just the descendant of an amazon raped by achilles at Troy. Mars is Mars.

But we fully expect to have both an heroic and divine cult in our name after our death.

Yeah but it's still not really physically possible to do that much damage in a single fist blow even with a cestus, and the extra damage was provided by the fortunate blessing from the dice gods.

So in other words shut fucking mouth and pay your respects, because hubris is what brought the Empire crashing down.

Oh shit, I was gonna suggest for somebody other than John to create the thread, so it doesn't 'accidentally' get deleted.

I read once that trained romans were much stronger than today's athletes.
I'd like to think Sulla did that with his own strength.

    In recognition of his deeds, Japan gifts him this theme song;

Ok, I've thought of something. Cinematicfags feel free to disregard this, but for people who want to believe that this game is still hardcore simulationist, remember the margin of success indicates how well Sulla's punch succeeded *against* Sami's evasion - his ST6 punch wouldn't have hurt thru the mask, but a cestus hitting a metal plate would have created a massive crash from the samurai's point of view. His polearm was already in an awkward position from the bind, and you could say he was thrown off balance mid-leap, fell and cracked his face open on a rock or Sulla's knee or something.
