247 KB RoS fechtclub: Manfred's Coming of Age Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)02:37 No.16201448
    Greetings, gentlemen!

Inspired by the likes of John Galt and Kzyrgis, I now endeavor to facilitate a Riddle of Steel scenario with your assistance. Meet our protagonist:

    Manfred Havrisham
    ST 4 WP 4 Ref 3
    AG 3 Wit 3 Aim 3
    TO 4 MA 3 KD 3
    EN 3 Soc 3 KO 5
    HT 3 Per 3 Move 5
    Proficiencies: Sword & Shield (6)
CP: 9 (sword & shield) 7 (cut & thrust) or 5 (pugilism or wrestling)
    Equipment: Arming Sword

Manfred has been the faithful squire of Sir Perceval of Havrisham, his uncle on his father's side. Having seen his squire through to the ripe age of 14, Perceval has decided it is time for young Manfred to become a man. He sends the boy off to town with five pence in his purse, an arming sword at his side, and some brief verbal instructions on how to secure the services of a prostitute.

Cut to an hour later. Sweaty, exhausted, and not a little embarrassed, Manfred the Man rises to put on his trousers only to find that his purse has a hole in the bottom. He has no money to settle up his debt with the harlot!

He looks sheepishly over his shoulder and sees the woman watching attentively. "Surely you have the money we agreed on, boy. I didn't put up with that little thing of yours for nothing."
    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)02:39 No.16201466
    A couple quick ground rules:

1> you guys are running Manfred. Everybody else's stats are unknown to you by default. First person posting as Manfred in direct response to a call to action by me gets dibs on dictating his actions
2> You guys roll for everything but hit locations (I'll do that)
3> if I don't call for a die roll, I probably won't honor your roll
4> first person to roll the dice called for gets it. Please be clear who you're rolling for.
5> please don't hide your dice
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)02:55 No.16201613

Any relevant skills/gifts? Apparently we have the small "rapier" flaw...
    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)02:58 No.16201637

Manfred has the standard Knight and Swordsman skill packages at 9, no notable gifts or flaws

He's a teenager, so he has no spiritual attributes to speak of. He just texts with his friends all day and reads 4chan.
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)03:06 No.16201675

I'm without my copy of the book, any chance we can get a list of skill levels? And are we using the original skill rules or the updated ones from companion?
    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)03:11 No.16201705
    splat from the core rulebook:

    Combat Weapon/Art -2
    First aid -2
    Body Language (read) +3
    Style analysis +2
    Etiquette (School) -1
    First aid -1
    Heraldry -1
    Tactics + 1
    Etiquette (Tourney)

Little Manfred doesn't have a lot of skills that strike me as pertinent, but that's really more for you lot to judge.

Grapple the prostitute, KO her and run away
    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)03:15 No.16201730

A fight it is, then! Not surprised. She's got a hand under the pillow, your sword is lying on the floor somewhere on the other side of the bed. Time for initial initiative, I assume you're throwing red?
    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)03:18 No.16201760
    A quick word on Wrestling:

Manfred has a Grappling proficiency that defaults to 5. Offensive grappling has an activation cost of 2cp, which would leave you with 3 total and leave you with nothing on the next exchange.
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)03:21 No.16201787

    >She's got a hand under the pillow

Might be time to rethink this. Buckle on our sword as part of our getting dressed and beckon her to come to us to receive her payment. "M am a very busy person, come collect your payment, I am in a hurry."
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)03:23 No.16201807
doesn't reflex count for the cp?
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)03:26 No.16201819

He means it defaults from 6 to 2. The CP is 5 after reflex. But we don't want to go grappling against a likely armed opponent, even if it's only a whore.

    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)03:52 No.16201979
Zero successes to Manfred's one! Maybe she didn't see you poking your finger through that hole in your purse.

"Uppe Greyide has been pestering me for days regarding a debt I owe him. He always gets his money, tis true..." she chatters away idly for a moment, then her brow narrows and her voice goes shrill. "Wait, that's just your sword belt! Where's my money, you little rat!?"

She springs to her feet, still naked, a dagger in her hand. Your arming sword is at your hip in its scabbard. Your keen fighting instincts tell you this crazy bitch is about to stab you.

    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)03:53 No.16201981

enough to get your sword nearby, not enough to get out of the door without trouble.
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)03:54 No.16201985

You just beckoned her over where you picked up your sword belt to get her payment. Changing your story right now isn't getting a lot of traction.

Charlene is in an aggressive stance, throws red, gains initiative against your white, and puts six dice into a thrust (ATN 5) at your chest (zone XII), shrieking in outrage at your intransigence. Getting your sword out will cost you 2cp, leaving you with 7 to work with (+2 to a defensive maneuver thanks to your stance).

Somebody declare Manfred's action (I'm assuming a parry, but that's your call)

Can I declare a terrain roll as well as a defense? If so 9 dice on a full evasion and 2 dice on a terrain roll to get to/through the door. If not, full 11 dice on full evasion.
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)04:04 No.16202033
attack, attack, attack. Kill the bitch and get out of there.
    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)04:07 No.16202046

Terrain roll sounds reasonable. Charlene's between you and the door, and the room isn't very big. 2 dice at 7 should get you over the bed , successful full evasion should get you out of the room.

Manfred: 2 at 7 to get to the door, then 9 at 4 to full evade

Charlene 6 at 5 to prick the little prick in the chest.
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)04:08 No.16202048

Murder won't impress Sir Percival, especially not of a woman. Her screams might attract attention and a squire of a (presumably) honorable knight should be believed over a whore.

    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)04:16 No.16202095
0 successes, Charlene doesn't fall for your fancy footwork, you're still in the room.

1 MoS, happily Charlene's using a ST-2 weapon and doesn't quite get enough on it to penetrate Manfred's imposing TO of 4.

New exchange, Charlene maintains initiative. You're pretty sure Sir Perceval can hear her a half-mile away at the manor keep.

Manfred's out of dice at the moment. Charlene spends the rest of her CP (2) on another stab, ATN 5, same location.

Zero successes. No bleeding, no shock, Manfred's sword is still sheathed, CP refreshes.

It's unclear that Charlene even remembers she's holding the blade as she beats away ineffectively at the squire's chest with both of her hands. Tears stream down her face as she spews a torrent of the most profane insults young Manfred has ever heard.

Charlene attacks at 6 dice (no more stance bonus dice), still zone XII, ATN5.
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)04:24 No.16202136

I suggest we try for the door again, unless there's a more convenient way out?

    only 2 successes

Cutting it close there, squire! 0 MoS to Charlene. She technically retains initiative but had spent all her dice due to an unfortunate reading error on my part. She strikes again with zero dice (effectively doing nothing). "You don't know Uppe Greyide! I told him I'd have his money today!"

As if on cue, you hear footsteps heading up the tenement stairs. "What is the meaning of all this caterwauling?" shouts a deep voice from the hallway.

    Wat do?
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)04:39 No.16202216

Technically if she has no dice left we could declare an attack (and thus gain initiative) but in this case it doesn't matter. Turn to see who addresses us, using our remaining 2 dice on a terrain roll to put distance between ourself and Charlene if she insists on continuing her assault.

technically you can declare an attack even when you don't have initiative and your opponent *does* have dice to spend, your blow would just land a moment after.

I'll think of your terrain roll as a full evade instead (same basic result: nobody gets to attack, but really low TN): 2 dice at 4
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)04:42 No.16202241

    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)04:44 No.16202251

Not really. There's just a fair amount of stuff which can influence combat (but which generally doesn't).
There's also the problem that the game desperately needs a second edition which unifies all of the rules adjustments which have happened in the Flower of Battle, the Companion and so on.

As I see it, Manfred can try to apply first aid to himself (with his awesome MA of 3 and TN of 8) or try to get help. Charelene doesn't look too bright, so having her peform medical work may not be wise

Either way, bloodloss roll (endurance at BL, so 3 at 8)

not good, Manfred's health drops 1 from bloodloss. two more of these and we're looking at a coma.

Why should she NOT let us die and help her pimp back to health? She's got literally no reason to do anything we ask of her!

    >presenting the Brave Knight
our Brave Knight is one of those a-bit-larger-than-life hero (St 6, To 6, Reflex 5, WP 4, En 4), armored at least in fine chain mail, with a mail coif (av 4 all over, or you can choose an other kind of fine armor, sponsored by the local nobles).
he has trained with the master of arms of those same nobles, so we'll count him as coming from a Chivalric school of arms, with a focus on swordsmanship (11 points, he train from child, so it's 12 in swords and 10 in lances).
you get to choose the exact sword, and choose it wisely: you have a magical one (it's a fine sword of its kind, with a spiritual attribut of 6: wurmslayer!). he's also carrying a reinforced (needs to break twice to actually break) light or heavy lance, again you choose.
and since we're talking of spiritual attributes, his own destiny: become the hero of the land! (2 points) is flaring up.
    >present the Noble Destrier
it's a basic, but very brave, destrier, with normal armor of your choice.

    >> nightlywurm 09/06/11(Tue)11:36 No.16204580
from my understanding, you get 3 bonus CPs from being on a destrier, but you're going to need a Ride check every time you're hit to avoid falling.
There are more complex manouvers, again, in the flower of battle, should you want to charge the horse into The Wurm or something similar.
Jumping off is a full evasion, and follows the same rules - it's sort of hard to commit to a couched charge and do that at the same time!

in short, that makes your Combat Pool 20 (5 reflex, 10 school, 2 destiny, 3 the Brave Destrier). use it wisely!

So. We roll for initiative, to see if we don't go first. If we DO go first, we hit to the face with the lance at 20 dice.

If we lose, we pay the activation cost, and then hope it works. We both roll Reflex at our weapon's ATN (with modifiers). Following that, we hit with the remaining 17 dice.

    let's reasses the situation:
    we have a new charge,
we have a Wurm that actually goes white, his eyes gleaming with cunning - the thing has a plan! - and a charging knight with a 27 CP pool.

I don't think you get master strike yet, not until proficency 15. but you still have the buckler on, if you want to do attack and defense at the same time. or there are overruns, and a number of similar manouvers. by the faq, you get evasive attacks as well.

The way soldiering works in the empire is that knights raise men and train them. so they have a sort of standing army. there is a saying when crops go bad or things look grim "theres always the army..." the army is always recruiting. so you can imagine the dirt farmers get a bit dumbfounded when they have a spear pushed in their arms and told to run at the enemy

    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)15:19 No.16206105
magic can do EVERYTHING. it follows a system similar to WoD Mage.
exactly, it can roll too big pools, against too small resistances, if any, with customizable TNs. also, you have to split that excessive pool and get as many successes as the TN on the 'defensive' part to avoid aging.
actually it's even more fiddly, and there are actually 2 systems, one old and one revised, but those things are true in both of them.
