I'm... Not entirely sure what happened back there. I don't think I deleted the thread, and I don't think it was baleeted by mods. Maybe I hit the wrong button.

Anyway, RoS general, and a break from the increasingly grim deathmatches that have made up my contribution to the board for the last week or two.

I'm John Galt, and I'm angry. Angry about Evasive Attack! Here are some Scythians to start us off.

Yeah, I've got no idea. Sorry about that, I was stupidly replying to a troll thread and decided to delete, but that was way earlier. This happened like ten minutes after that.

I dunno. Anyway, here we are. After the disaster that was the end of Gizka's adventure, I feel a number of lessons have been learned.

1: Smallsword is a pretteh cool guy, eh kills low combat pool enemies and doesn't afraid of anything.
2: If you're going to have Acrobatics at all, have it at 4.
3: Never go defensive against guys with guns.

Do a classic Gladiator matchup - Retarius vs Secutir and see if it play out in a comparable fashion to what reenactors found. (50:50, depending on whether the Retarius can fuck up the Secutir's game with his net)

If you're crazy, try and simulate a bridge fight where the Retarius has no net, but starts on a high plattform accessible over two gangways and with a supply of stones to throw.

A while. I guess it is getting late.

Well obviously Legionary Sulla has to break formation all throughout time and space. That's just a given. I've been promising that one for a while and I feel like a tool for not having done it already, but I will. (Incidentally I encourage all those who intend to participate to learn every one of those tedious shield based maneuvers. It might just save yer life someday.)

Then I think we need to move back towards our more casual ass-whoopings for a few days. Some honest, limb cleaving dick stabbing goodness. The way God intended.

After that... Well. I have plans. You saw the last thread, so you can probably guess what they are. We'll see what happens. For now, I'm going to go put the vermouth back in the fridge and take a nap.

I'll see you folks later. Great things are lay ahead. Keep the dream alive.

    >I'm thinking of running a Riddle of Steel game for a couple of players online, set in Renaissance Italy with very well-hidden, but very plot-significant magic and supernatural MacGuffins.
    >But, the storyline will be directly based on Tales of the Abyss. The current pope's son (or is it~?) and the 14-year-old Bishop of Pamplona, Cesare Borgia, will take the place of Ion. The Catholic Church (and Roma) will take the place of the Order of Lorelei (and Daath), obviously.
    >Good idea or not?

So I'm back and with four more questions.

    1. To encourage a more cinematic "helmets are unimportant" feel, to make characters without a helmet not totally doomed, and to make headshots less appealing, would giving the head, the neck, the collar, and the throat a non-stacking AV of 4 be any unbalanced?

    2. What would the ramifications of allowing Fine (at x5 cost) and Superlative (at x20) leather be? Fluffwise, they're some Helmschmied armor and Armor of Altaïr-tier equipment. I know there's the looming threat of Landed Noble Progressive Schoolers with an AV 4 shell of dead animal, but would it really be that bad?

    3. What would the ramifications of abolishing skill packets and just assigning a pyramid of TN 4/TN 5/TN 6/TN 7/TN 8/TN 9 freely be? Other than every other Progressive Schooler shooting for Acrobatics 4. I'm using the updated skill rules from Companion.

    4. Just how unhittable is a totally unarmored Progressive Schooler with Reflexes 8 and Acrobatics at TN 4? Like, if it comes down to AV 4 "Armor of Altaïr" Superlative leather all around vs. going totally unarmored and Ducking and Weaving at TN 7 with an average of 3 bonus dice every time, what would be the better pick?

I still don't understand how Gizka could have fell into a trap like this. When you're being led to some place, the first thing you do is check the surroundings.

Especially when you're a ruthless assassin and you're dealing whith someone named borgia.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)13:32 No.16118405

    1. Literal plot armor. I guess it works, though I am personally not fond of such things without any sort of in-game explanation. You could just make sure they have enough CP to parry and evade.

    2. Since there is apparently weird magic, why the hell not. I wouldn't do it, but you should know your players. Or just yell at them when they minmax the shit out of everything.

    3. Have you looked at how character progression works? Giving them all this free shit basically leaves no room for growth. I mean, new skills are cheap to learn and advancing skills doesn't even cost anything.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)13:34 No.16118410
It is a low-fantasy/medieval game with great focus on melee combat. Many players disregard the standard setting and all supernatural elements.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)13:34 No.16118414
Well, problem is, we didn't explicitly state to be wary. And to be honest, it was pretty much predestined for Gizka to wind up as she did. You can get away with only so much ruthless murder.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)13:36 No.16118428
In the Companion's rules, IIRC, skills don't advance with use but with SP, like everything else. But they advance on the cheap (from default to TN4 +3 specialization costs like 16 SP- as much as a level of an high proficency!)

    1. AV 4 on the head and neck areas? Unbalanced? Not really? Dumb? yep. tRoS isn't meant for cinematic combat. Kludging it to cinematic means you should probably be using another system.
    2. Honestly, not that bad, but it depends on the economic you've set up in game.
    3. I'm not sure what you mean. like one TN4, two TN5, three TN6 skills and so on? If so, you can expect players to be speciallized in the skills that help them the most with very little in the way of "fluff skills" that come for free with the packets. It's not a very organic way of gaining skills, but then you want a cinematic game, so I'm not sure you're even using the right system.

4.At reflexes 8 the unhittable comes from going first and stabbing the other guy.
    >> absurd !!0swx5mltBxM 08/30/11(Tue)13:45 No.16118483
I don't know if focused is the right word. A good chunk of the rules are devoted to it, but combat is so deadly, you want to avoid it unless you can set up a drastically unfair advantage.
It's not like, for example, Dungeons and Dragons, where the assumption is that to advance, you fight things. Advancing is based on what the character wants to accomplish, and that may or may not include violence.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)13:48 No.16118503
To be fair, there are some cinematic rule variants in FoB. I think he should just use those, I think they are enough.

there are better systems for intrigue, but it can be done, and the spiritual attributes (the other good point of the game) will support it.
but really, the combat system is the main point.
Unless you mean political scheming in the L5R way: duels are very well supported!
    >> absurd !!0swx5mltBxM 08/30/11(Tue)13:52 No.16118528
Yeah, there are, but the system makes certain assumptions and not having helms is pretty much a death sentence normally. Unless you favor that area. Which isn't a bad move, but it leads to even more groin shots.

    >You could just make sure they have enough CP to parry and evade.

Less that and more "I thrust for the head" every time in many cases.

    >3. Have you looked at how character progression works? Giving them all this free shit basically leaves no room for growth.

Spiritual Attributes advance skills in Companion. I'm not seeing how there's no room for growth when you can do something like "Alright, I'm bumping up my TN 6 skill to TN 5."

    >1. AV 4 on the head and neck areas? Unbalanced? Not really? Dumb? yep. tRoS isn't meant for cinematic combat. Kludging it to cinematic means you should probably be using another system.

Well... if you're going to tell me that, then this game has been trying to mislead me into a path of lost hopes with the first chapter of the Flower of Battle.
"TROS was designed to fit easily into both camps [realistic gameplay and cinematic gameplay]."
"However, TROS suits more cinematic play as well. It’s not even a difficult transition to make..."

Are you saying I shouldn't try what the first chapter of the book, which is about running Riddle as a cinematic game, suggests?

Anyway, the weird thing I see about head protection is that it's just not doable by Progressive Schoolers. All of the helmets in the Flower of Battle are metal. So if you have two shieldless rapier duelists duking it out, all dressed in leather armor, they're going to be thrusting for the face *every time* because that's the only part of them without any AV.

    >4.At reflexes 8 the unhittable comes from going first and stabbing the other guy.

    That doesn't answer the question.

If I'm getting this right, cyanide has an average Health TN of 10, and maximum potency cyanide has an average Health TN of 14. Only one success is required.

The average human has Health 4. According to the dice pool math Excel file on the Riddle of Steel website, that gives the average human a 34.4% chance of outright resisting an average dosage of cyanide, and a 25.2% chance of resisting maximum-potency cyanide. That *cannot* be right.

How is that *not* supposed to already happen in the skill packet system? Like, pick Courtier and you already have a whole host of good skills.

So the entire first chapter of the Flower of Battle, and the Spiritual Attribute system which is basically all about cinematically gaining inexplicable dice just because your character is destined for something or just plain lucky...

    That's not for cinematicness?

    >Didn't you ask about the "ramifications of abolishing skill packages", apparently in favour for a general level in all skills? And now you are arguing with skill packet system? Please elaborate, I am honestly confused.

I said earlier "assigning a pyramid of TN 4/TN 5/TN 6/TN 7/TN 8/TN 9." So, like, that character with a Priority A in skills can choose one skill at TN 4, two skills at TN 5, three skills at TN 6, four skills at TN 7, five skills at TN 8, and six skills at TN 9.

Untrained is just TN 10, like it is in Companion.

    >Also, just heighten the TN of cyanide or something.

I think it's a symptom of the original skill system being *broken* and way too easy to succeed on checks from. Like, seriously, if you're an "apprentice" (TN 8) at a skill and you've got below-average natural talent (3 in the attribute), you've got a 65.7% chance to pass most skill checks using that skill. The GM gives you a -1 penalty to your pool from unfavorable circumstances, and that's still a 51% chance of succeeding.

Companion, which came out a year after the Flower of Battle, revised the skill rolling system *entirely*. Anything involving skill checks from previous books has to be overhauled to keep up with the new skill system.

A third of people with mediocre immune systems surviving cyanide is a bit hard to swallow.

It's not as far-fetched as it seems. If you've been eating/drinking certain things, you can survive very high levels of cyanide poisoning, as glucose bonds with cyanide to form less toxic compounds. Rasputin is said to have survived enormously high dosage of cyanide because he was drinking wine at the time, which had enough sugar to counter-act it. I figure a one-third chance that your victim was drunk or had a sweet tooth is generous, but not enormously so.

    >I think it's a symptom of the original skill system being *broken* and way too easy to succeed on checks from.

Let me clarify here. The original system is broken because high attributes give you *starkly* diminishing returns, as successes past the first are useless when making a noncombat roll.

An average guy with Strength 4 is attempting a TN 6 task. 93.8% chance of success. A juggernaut who is quite literally as strong as a Tiger (Of Beasts and Men, p41) with Strength 8 has... a 99.6% chance of success. 5.8% difference. Geez, that isn't even in the double digits for a difference!

Still, that leaves the average person with a 76% chance of shrugging off an average dose of arsenic, hemlock, or ricin.

It really is just a problem with the "one success is all you need" rolling system.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)15:20 No.16119345

Which is why I'm switching *everything* skill based to the Companion system, which relies on number of successes, and which sets all pure attribute rolls at TN 6.

So you've got your average guy with Health 4 rolling at TN 6 against arsenic, hemlock, and ricin, requiring three successes and having only a 31.3% chance of success.

Meanwhile, a paragon of health who's literally healthier than a horse (destrier and courser, Of Beasts of Men, pp36-37), boasting a huge Health of 7, has a 77.3% chance of shrugging off arsenic, hemlock, or ricin.

    46% difference right there.

Now let's compare that to the original system, where arsenic, hemlock, and ricin demand only a Health roll against TN 8. Mr. Average with Health 4 has a 76% chance of beating that, while Mr. Healthier Than A Battle Horse has a 91.8% chance of beating that.

    That's a shameful 15.8% difference.

Okay, look that's bullshit when you're just measuring the absolute difference between percentages. Str 8 man is 6.2/.4 = 15.5 times less likely to fail than str4man.

To put it another way, consider the case when you're putting poison in someone's hay: after 10 TN6 rolls at health 8, there's only a 4% chance ponyboy has failed any of them, while health 4 gives only .938^10 ≈ 52.7% chance of success.

Calling it now. Here are the people who we 'know' from this event.

    Gizka: The Death Machine
Birdy: The Whore caught in the tide
    Tiberius: The Executioner

And here is what we know happened.

Gizka was hired by the Borgia to kill a cardinal. Presumably, this is whoever Cesare Borgia replaced at the start of his political career (which would make this about 1492 or 93) or else someone standing in the way of Rodrigo Borgia's designs on Italy. The fact that the Borgia aren't already here suggests that it is still the 15th century.

She killed him in the Sistine Chapel ("The big place with the pretty roof.")

She escaped pursuit and made it to the city's northern walls, climbed a rookery, leaped onto a wall, landed on a prostitute, killed a guard, threw that same prostitute off of the wall, and then jumped off herself.

She then used the battered prostitute as a cover story to garner sympathy with travelers and a ride to her means of escape and location of payment.

There, she was betrayed by the Borgia (big surprise,) which she had probably expected, but not in the form of 'Tiberius', who she evidently knew, but who was separate from her contact.

The prostitute saw this and screamed, which distracted the gunmen just enough that Gizka was able to avoid all but one of their shots, though that one caused hideous damage, and the poor girl was deposited into the river, where we can assume she died.

Or where we would assume she died, if the story structure here did not so damningly call for her survival.

I mean look at it. She goes on retirement job, picks up cute girl, completes mission in totally awesome fashion, is betrayed for no clear reason, turns out old rival/friend/enemy was involved, gets shot but body is not recovered, 'dies' with a profound final thought that we are not privy to.

The number of successes listed down there isn't for resisting the poison. It's for *crafting* the poison.

    >On the table below is listed the minimum number of successes needed on an Herbalist roll to create one dose of each type of poison (assuming the raw materials are available). If the required number of successes is not achieved, the attempt has failed and the raw ingredients are ruined. If the roll is botched, the Herbalist has somehow exposed himself to the poison, check under the specific poison entries to determine the results (assume base Strength). The table also lists the base Strength for each poison type. Each success above the number required to make the poison raises the Strength/potency of the resulting dose of poison by 1 step, up to the maximum, which is listed in brackets. Finally, the Herbalist is able to fashion a poison of carefully determined effect so as to take the target to a specific level on the individual poison effect chart, but no further. This may be done by simply adding 1 to the minimum number of required successes.

So yeah, you're still looking at an average human resisting cyanide 34.4% of the time and arsenic, hemlock, and ricin 76% of the time, because the system for attribute and skill rolls pre-Companion was just *broken*.
    >> Anonymous 08/31/11(Wed)08:34 No.16129432
But you have to roll again against the strength of the poison, if you pass the first check. And even then you are likely to fall into coma from cyanide.

Because many of the rules in Of Beasts and Men and the Flower of Battle use the core book's rules for attribute rolls and skill rolls, in other words, the broken rules for those.

Companion updated them to something that actually works well, so that's why I'd like to take my time to point out just why it doesn't work with a few examples. I'll have to manually update the rules in Of Beasts and Men and the Flower of Battle that involve attribute rolls and skill rolls myself.

    >Well, if you wanted to, you could just use that table for poison rolls as well.

Or I could just assign poisons a Difficulty of 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, and then integrate them into Companion's attribute roll system by just calling for a Health roll.

Doesn't that balance it out because of how failing one roll still effectively lets you reroll it to survive anyway?

    >Doesn't that balance it out because of how failing one roll still effectively lets you reroll it to survive anyway?

Nope, if you fail, in case of cyanide, you die, if you succeed you have to roll again to see if you don't die after all. And if you succeed that you have to roll again to see if you don't fall into a coma.

    >At each stage, a Health Check
must be made against the Strength of the
poison (see the section on creating poisons,
above). If successful, the body has begun
to overcome the poison and the symptoms
will temporarily halt. Another health check
must be made again after the same period,
and if that is successful then the poison has
been beaten. If not, then the symptoms will
    again begin to progress.

Alright, let's look at the specific rules for cyanide, which are an exception to that rule.

    >The victim has a single HT roll to avoid death from cyanide poisoning, and there’s nothing any onlooker can do with First Aid to assist. If the victim does not die, they are nevertheless likely to faint and enter a coma (roll HT/10 to avoid; if failed, repeat the roll once every 12 hours or so to wake up).

You fail that, you're dead after 30 seconds. You succeed on that (33.4% chance for an average person), you make a TN 10 Health roll (33.4% chance for an average person, again) or fall into a coma. If you do fall into a coma, every 12 hours, you get another TN 10 Health roll to wake up.

Those still look like generous odds to me, and it still doesn't account for the exorbitant resistance rate for arsenic, hemlock, and ricin.

That sounds like a *great* guideline for conversion to the Companion attribute and skill roll system. I'm not saying that sarcastically, it's perfect. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Companion suggests the following difficulties:
Difficulty 1: Simple, Difficulty 2: Average/Default, Difficulty 3: Tricky, Difficulty 4: Difficult, Difficulty 5: Hard, Difficulty 6+: Extremely hard

(Original TN / 2) - 1, rounded down makes that line up *exactly* with the chart on page 6 of the core rulebook, where TN 6 is supposed to be "Average" and TN 10 is supposed to be "Difficult."

Right now, I'm feeling that if we can make the update the broken attribute roll system for poisons, we should be able to update the broken attribute roll and skill roll system for the rest of the game.

I guess I just want to make the attribute/skill roll system more in line with the well polished melee combat system. The latter makes *number* of successes count, and that worked. The original attribute/skill roll system just had you looking for *one* success, which was broken.

Companion switching it to rely on number of successes, like the melee combat system, really does magically and wonderfully fix the noncombat side of the game.

    >Give everyone a toughness boost. Toughness works the same way as armor, very simple.

That's exactly what I suggested last thread, free Toughness, Endurance, and Health 7 for all characters. That is subsequently what I got, like, ten posters shouting at me for badifying the game for.

    >-Change the head/neck/groin damage chart to the same as the torso. Attacking these parts now yields the same results as hitting the other big part of the body.

I just decided to give the head, face, collar, and throat a non-stacking, natural AV of 4. Maybe the groin too.

Would switching the head, face, collar, throat, and groin damage charts to the torso chart be any more intuitive and simple to parse for the players looking through the damage tables?

I'm starting to think that Toughness, even in a non-cinematic Riddle of Steel game, is better known as "Pluck."

Basically, the ability to turn away, dodge, parry, or block at the last minute to make an incoming attack less grievous than it would have been without adrenaline coursing through your veins and forcing your body to move out of the way.

Because something tells me that having a tough body doesn't just allow you to bounce off a swipe from a dopplehander sword.

Thanks for the suggestions. About Spiritual Attributes, I'm thinking of modifying them into something more like Aspects from FATE.

I think it would. Do you guys actually have a copy of the book though? If not, just print out a new damage chart, tell your players you want a cinematic campaign.
Though FUNCTIONALLY it's about the same as invisible armor, since it's not spelled out as invisible armor it 'feels' different.
Some players can get really hung up on that kind of thing. Remember, roleplaying isn't just about the result, it's how players interpret the mechanics leading up to the result.

Hard bones and tough hide. The span from 1 to 7 is a bit big for humans, but for other creatures it makes sense.

Also, a Doppelhander sword does ST+4 damage, so a human with peak toughness of 7 still gets a level 1 wound from a swing without successes. So actually a level 2 wound, if it hits.

    >>16130439Why is the Kriegsmesser shorter when wielded ith both hands?

Your range is shortened by the need to hold it with both hands.

a one handed grip allows for projecting the blade further away from the core of your body.

A few of the weapons at the 'shorter end of long' have this, like the jian.

Possibly it's because having two hands on the handle means the sword's distance from the wielder's head, centreline, or rear foot is decreased, because the rear arm is also on the handle. With one hand, you can turn into a side-on fencing style stance, and effectively have more reach.

I think longsword might be better for kriegsmesser in two hands - we have a historical manual schielhauDOTorgSLASHfechtbuchandreasDOThtml showing how longsword can be applied to a one handed messer, so it makes sense to use a two handed messer even more similarly.
    >> Anonymous 08/31/11(Wed)11:39 No.16130534

But the bastard sword, for example, stays the same length both one-handed and two-handed.

Well, C&T is listed as a proficiency in the Messer entry, but the description of C&T is more or less "onehander + sidearm"
    >> Anonymous 08/31/11(Wed)11:43 No.16130558
There's a lot more cut than thrust in messer. If anything, it'll be similar to the schwiezersabel's proficiencies.

Well, when we're playing a campaign based on a JRPG, I'd hate to have the kind of player who gets hung up on small details.

With even just plain leather armor though, that's a level 0 Wound.

Let's manufacture a contrived scenario just to prove a point. We'll open up Of Beasts and Men and have a generic assassin (pp14-15, Strength 4) attempt to assassinate a generic soldier (p18, Toughness 6).

The soldier is off-duty and is, for whatever reason, completely naked. Let's not ponder why. The assassin unsheaths his cinquedea (broad dagger, Flower of Battle, p136), and smears on some wolfsbane as injected poison for good measure (Flower of Battle, p91).

The assassin screws up his stealth roll while trying to sneak up on the naked soldier, and the latter is alerted! A bout begins. The assassin goes red, wishing to end this quickly, while the naked soldier throws white and feebly attempts to defend himself. 6 successes on the assassin's thrust to zone XIII, 5 successes on the naked soldier's partial evasion.

The assassin rolls a 4 on his d6 hit location roll. Oh no, not the face! A broad dagger deals ST+1 damage on a puncture, so that's a total of 6 damage and... wait, the naked soldier's Toughness 6 just canceled that out.

Now, in this scenario, what's more believable?
    A. The soldier's "hard bones and tough hide" cause the cinquedea to bounce off his face. His healthy cheekbones have saved him from injury and a poisoning.
    B. The soldier's adrenaline and pluck have him turn away at just the last moment, having the cinquedea shave only a couple of strands of hair, as the naked soldier catches in the corner of his eye a glimpse of the poison smeared over the blade.

Well, since you're using the companion, give them Armour of Heroes for free and use the variant damage system.

tl;dr: Toughness only counts for 1/3 of it's actual value, light weapons deal 2/3 damage against armour.

Also, in that case, "tough and hard bones" would still work. Dagger might have struck the cheekbone and slid off, leaving a small gash, insufficient for a notable dose of injection poison to enter.

Also, by TO 6~7, we're discussing ridiculous levels of toughness. Like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbRkqNXkiqY

1-7 isn't even the typical span for humans, it's more like 2 (extremely untalented) to 4 (average) to 7 (exceptional).

The example I gave was Strength 4 (average) versus Toughness 6 (noteworthy), just a 2 point difference, and you still had a silly case of cinquedeas bouncing off cheekbones under the default definition of Toughness.

    >Well, since you're using the companion, give them Armour of Heroes for free and use the variant damage system.

Hmm, I've read it and it involves too much calculations for a simple damage "roll" than I'd be comfortable with. It punishes light weapon usage and makes the PCs' high Toughness less protective.

I think I'll stick with free Toughness ("Pluck"), Endurance, and Health 7, and passive and nonstacking AV 4 for the head, face, collar, throat, and groin.

    >Also, by TO 6~7, we're discussing ridiculous levels of toughness. Like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbRkqNXkiqY

Toughness 6 is what knights and soldiers in Of Beasts and Men have. Berserkers have Toughness 7. And I think that video is less of a matter of having tough flesh and more of having a good technique for pinching the spearhead between your chin and collar and then pushing it so that the tip doesn't dig into your skin.

    Less practical than:

    Oh, I see. Thanks!

Let's speed things up and decide on an all out punch, throwing is too risky, as guards are approaching and there is the chance of falling along with the courtier.
Since we were already in combat at the start of the round, we don't get the +2cp, am I correct?
That means 12 dice at 5.

The courtier had time to get used to this situation and gets to react. However, he is still sitting. Does that warrant a -1/2 cp malus? As those courtiers are apparently pretty good duelants with rapiers, he can default to brawling at a total of 8 normal cp.

10 successes again! However, he gets to attempt to parry with his 4cp. On the other hand, he can knock it down to 6 damage at best, and that doesn't really help at all, so I suppose we can skip to the fun parts.
"QUIEN COMENTA, INVENTA!" El Toro yells, obliterating another head.

Lucho blesses you with another gift.

The guards will be there next round! Luckily, they are pretty stupid and one advances at either side of the table, making it pretty easy to isolate them.

I agree. Isolate one, see if we can't slam his head into the table for maximum badass, and then engage the other one before moving onto the king.

    >> Guy 08/31/11(Wed)19:29 No.16134857
I doubt anyone will object to another TO, seeing how two guys with swords desperately want to stab Toro right now.
Maybe the guards weren't that stupid after all, as you see no easy way past them and to the king. Maybe if you jump on the table, but that would probably be a pretty hard terrain check.

Also, charging just counts as taking aggressive stance, yes?

I don't think we need a terrain check to isolate a guard for a round, they are reasonably far apart and you already did a seminar on terrain checks with Assassins Riddle.

So how do we approach this guard, and how does he react?
We could either try to grapple aggressively or defensively, there isn't a real difference, actually.

I'd say the guard, realizing that he is about to get grappled by a bloodsoaked luchador, goes defensive and parries, giving him a free attack at Toro's arms. Meanwhile, Toro actually has no reason not to use all of his 13+2 dice, since any margin of success spills over to the second exchange, should he be successful.

If you all agree, roll 13 at 5 for Toro (since -2cp activation cost) and 10 at 6 for the guard.

    >> Guy 08/31/11(Wed)19:50 No.16135043
9 - 5 = 4 margin of success. El Toro grabs the tiny guard with his huge hands. The guards death sentence has been signed and now he is awaiting his execution in the next exchange!

I suppose beating somebody's head into the table could count as a throw, possibly with some sort of damage bonus. We have 4cp at a TN of 7. We have two options to increase possible damage further, a) spending 1cp for +1, and b) falling with and on him for another +1 damage (Note that even if you don't choose to fall with him, it might happen upon a failed check.)

Yes, the margin of success on the parry, had he rolled more, would have been inflicted as damage (+ST) upon our arms. So we don't need to roll further.
    >> Anonymous 08/31/11(Wed)19:52 No.16135070

Note that this will cost us a third of our CP until we stand up. The roll to avoid falling is a terrain roll at TN 7 ... wait, don't terrain rolls need CP assigned to them? Or can you make it an attribute roll?

First of all, how does the second guard react? On one hand, he has just witnessed a beautiful example of luchador martial arts, which may leave him in terrified awe at the prospect of ending up the same. In other news, standing up is a terrain roll with TN 8 in this case, but successfully doing so would bring us back to full CP next round, at least if the second guard doesn't stab us again.

I -think- we have to get the dice for that roll from our CP.

I can give you a few very good reasons why that isn't likely. The most basic of which is that Galt had just included a life history box for Gizka in the session in which she was shot. Unless he planned on flashbacks in which we find out the rest of her probably plot relevant and colourful background, there was no point in including it if she was just going to die. Secondly, there's the fact that we cut off right before her last thoughts. Now I read a lot of John Galt's writefagging and I'll tell you right now, if that scene was her final moment of life, we would've gotten...

    One of These.

Right there. The ellipses and the skipped line followed by a one sentence capstone. Every time. Every single time anything dramatic happens, it is done like that. [No seriously, if you don't believe me go read stuff he writes.] No such thing was done. That means it isn't the end.

    Saved. That is splendid sir.

Now that's fair, I'm just speculating. We still don't know if he was the one to pull the trigger, if it was his idea, or if he was even a fully willing participant.

I'll admit that my position here is biased because I learned today that Captain Kirk's middle name is Tiberius and now this guy is played by William Shatner in my mind, making his getting of the girl a no-brainer.
