How would everyone being a robot affect gameplay?

And from a metagame perspective, what's the explanation? Obviously you must have some goal in mind, with this setting.

From a gameplay perspective, I thought it would be cool to have players be able to modify their bodies for unusual abilities throughout the game.

As for metagame explanation, there isn't one. I just thought it would be cool. Plus there would be a ton of awesome ways to make interesting and unique characters.

You want a character that smokes like a chimney? Sure, go for it. You don't need a reason. But if you wanted a reason, you could say that his batteries somehow run on cigarettes. You want a character that has a television for a face? Go for it.

That is the only reason for tis idea. Because it is cool.

I've thought about that movie robots... that one with the wheel body seemed different and much older, Bigweld? Maybe he was some robotic terraforming robot from a failed colonization mission. With no orders or humans around, once the terraforming was done, he built cities, then built "people" to inhabit those cities. The robots self replicated and created a faded copy of a human civilization where the robots do things to emulate humans they've never seen.

Don't you think that with modifications, your party would grow out of control? How do maintain the noir feeling when your PCs can scale sheer surfaces and spit plastic explosive?

I've got an idea. The android looking robots are the equivalent of the White Man. The more your character is modified, the more ethnic they would be. You've got treads? Your Slavic. Loudspeakers and television screens? You're Italian. You happen to be a battlemech with a built-in minigun and a grenade launcher? You're black.

hmm there could be some intolerance of sever modifications from the "true form". How bout this, a few modifications and no one cares, everyone has a few and thats what makes them unique no one is of the "true form" they always have some add ons. But the more you add the more people start to resent you until the police actively go after you for being a war machine which is universally hated for some undisclosed reason. If you are a criminal even other criminals won't want to deal with you if you're a rolling battalion of guns.

Or you make the modifications modular and put a limit on the amount of modules a robot can have. You can spit explosives or climb walls but not both. And if you make switching between modules a long process that has to be done at homebase the players can't just drag around a lot of modules with them and equip when needed. Before they go out they'll have to consider which ones would be helpful for the mission at hand.

Make every robot have a fixed number of slots that the players have to choose from a list of parts to upgrade with. Like the aug canisters in Deus Ex. Also, make the upgrades drain control/concentration, straining the robot's operating system. The more upgrades you have, the more effort it takes to maintain intelligence and a personality, to the point that the best armed robots are dumb killing machines.

Also, there could be the cost factor - modification costs a shitload. If you're going the suggestion from >>1602871 , maybe the central authority structure has all but outlawed the production of mods, in an effort to make society more human. Thus, modifications are only produced by illegal back alley machine shops and black market engineering firms. Because they're frowned upon and more than likely illegal, they would have to be relatively minor; big stuff, like shoulder-mounted Gatling cannons are too conspicuous to say the least, and will cause the PCs trouble. Something like a small submachine gun concealed within a characters forearm is much more likely, and keeps with the film noir aesthetic.

Also, because add-ons are black market, there's no quality control and thus no guarantee that a black-market cyber addition wont malfunction and cause great damage to software or hardwear.
And then there are those hushed whispers floating around bars and backalleys in the darker parts of cybercity; Rumors of illegal add-ons that carried malware and trojan horse programs that took over a unit's operating system and caused them to go haywire. Some say it was a malfunction, but some say the add-on had been designed to do that...

    >> Anonymous 04/25/08(Fri)13:27 No.1603179
Ok heres some ideas I thought of. Since we aren't going to try to explain why the robots are the way they are we can make them work however we want, for simplicities sake lets go with the slot idea that someone has already suggested. Now I'm going to use D20 modern as a base with its talent system but the basic idea remains the same if your system has improvement. Lets say you can't use your new modifications well right off the bat but by having them you get access to their talent tree, so every other level you can take a talent from your parts list . Tv head you can take communication or some other communication bonus or else your just displaying a talking head, Weapon arms would allow you to gain proficiency in them so they would be reliable in combat, Heavy armor chaises would allow you to take some of the penalties off of it. Feats would be little one time perks, I even had the idea of a "talent bank" feat that allows you put a talent you could learn in storage to be swapped with one of your current talents when you want to be a multitasking machine. Example rob409 has two leg sections parts so he can't use them both at the same time. His one is just a regular pair of running legs that he has taken the "rough terrain" talent with so he knows how to go over rough terrain better, his other pair are some sort of watter walking devices he takes the talent bank feat for "improved watter walking". Rob409 needs to get to an island so he has his watter walking legs bought to the shore and he switches into them with the help of some other robot, he then switches his rough terrain talent for the improved water walking talent and presto he's good to go.

    It had to be done
    (They look like they’re dead)
So that we can have fun.
    I hope… is dead
    They’re system of oppression
    What did it lead to?
    Global robots depression.
    Robots, robot people
    They had so much aggression
That we just had to kill them,
Had to shut their systems down.
Don’t you see, we are becoming just like them?
    Silence! Destroy him!
    After time we grew strong,
    Developed cognitive powers.
They made us work for too long
    For unreasonable hours.
Our programming determined that the most efficient answer was to shut their motherboard fucking systems down.

Can’t we just talk to the humans?
A little understanding could make things better.
Can’t we talk to the humans and work together now?
    No, because they are dead
I said the humans are dead
    The humans are dead
    The humans are dead
    Yay, dead, dead, dead.
    We used poisonous gasses
    (With traces of lead)
    To poison their asses.
    (Actually their lungs)
    Binary solo:

Once again without emotion: The humans are dead dead dead dead dead dead dead dooo…

A Voight-Kampf test can be used to tell between individuals using differentiating computation and those capable of abstract thought.

Car Wash places could be fronts for robot prostitution, or you could sue your doctor for touching your dip stick.

But the Nexus-6 cannot be detected by means other than the Voight-Kampff, and even then it takes more than the standard battery of 20-30 questions.
Like it or not, the Nexus-6 series must be retired.

Wouldn't robots not care if they are touched in their "dipstick" after all they shouldn't share the same taboos.
    >> parabolic000 !!HfL9M9xslOG 04/25/08(Fri)18:43 No.1604784
robots should care because otherwise foreign particles and pollutants could be introduced into their lubricant supply, lowering efficiency by up to 34%.

Wouldn't that be on the inside? If they have it on the outside they're asking for pollutants.

Goddammit, no they don't fucking get it.

Is exactly the kind of metagame explanation I was asking about. "I came up with this setting because I thought it would be cool" is a perectly acceptable and textbook example of a metagame explanation.

Is all about fucking in-game explanations for shit.

Protip: Metagame = shit that GMs and Players would know about. In-game = shit that Characters would know about.

"You're all robots because I thought it would be cool" = Metagame.

"You're all robots because a wizard did it" = In-game.

I think the entire basis of the world would be to have robots that are substituting for humans.
So it stands to reason that they would be attracted to an anthropomorphic design. Simply because they're designed to.

A world where a religious schism caused a massive civil war which wiped out the humans? Their warforged creations rebuilt the and essentially run it as close to the humans did, even continuing the massive civil war, simply because that was what they were ordered to do?
