    >the irc on sup/tg/ is #CommanderQuest

It is early morning, and the city is mostly quiet. The sun has just risen, a light fog resting on the not yet repaired cobblestones of the still gutted market district. Arrayed before you are three full Imperial maniples, ready to march, behind them, stir 5 wings of noble cavalry, and 3 personal cavalry wings belonging to High Commander Quintus. Behind that group all of the other mercenaries working with the maniples before them are also mounting autowagons.

To your right and a step ahead of you is Quintus, and to his right, and standing level with you is Commander Spuria. The former chuckles airily as Wulf prowls through your men, shouting at them, extorting them to mount the wagons and load supplies faster, even though most of the soldiers are at least 2 years his seniors and a good deal larger. "You have the lad trained well. Does he have a command of his own?"
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)20:56 No.15041335
"Not yet. I'm still trying to decide where he would best fit."

If any unit, he's leading the combat elementalists, while Laelith is more of an instructor.
    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)20:59 No.15041370
"He has a keen mind and I've allowed him to command in my absence at times, however, he still does not have one. It's something I'm thinking of addressing at some point soon."
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 05/24/11(Tue)21:12 No.15041501
"I leave him in command of smaller detachments when strategy calls, but no, he has no command of his own yet." you reply as the troops continue to mount the autowagons.

"Oh. I suppose it is rather hard to give him a command of a unit that already has a captain." the man dismisses the topic. By the time the sun is beginning to burn off the entire force is mounted and ready to ride.

The first part of the days ride is uneventful enough, and aside from a few of the other maniples soldiers vomiting off the sides of their wagons. After lunch however Captain Corinth of the skywings guides his mount to fly alongside Spite, almost startling you with his unexpected descent. "Commander, we have come to our decision, though, the wage and terms you offer could very well effect that." he announces to you after saluting.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)21:13 No.15041511
    Alright, let's hear it.
    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)21:19 No.15041563
Obviously we will provide equipment, a place to stay and training for the unit. In terms of pay... Perhaps keep it at their current wages that could be negotiable after future campaigns under our command? If they do well enough, we might want to raise their wages or cut them loose if they're crap.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)21:23 No.15041593
Okay, here's one possible set of terms.
Steady pay of 50 Gold per man per month, not including combat bonuses. Repeaters for every man. 50% cost of new valkyrie mounts to be paid by Justinian

We're sending them back to be a cadre for a new airborne unit trained to use repeaters from the start. We're paying them as instructors, not necessarily as combat pilots (unless they want to stay on the combat roster). They're to be on retainer, so essentially they'll be our personal merc air unit.

Pax, what's the average going salary for a combat instructor or some other teaching job?
    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)21:32 No.15041672
Go for this for now. If they DO want to keep on fighting, I say we pay them what an average legionnaire gets plus half of that. Got to give them some incentive and I assume this includes equipment (We have an armoury after all...), food and a place in the barracks.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 05/24/11(Tue)21:35 No.15041704
    >are you sure you want to pay that much? an average legionaire gets 10 gold annualy which is enough for a little better than basic life for a small family. officers and instructors get 13-17
    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)21:36 No.15041708
Based on what was said in the IRC, 50 gold per man is a fortune while the average legionnaire gets 10 annually. Scale it down to 15-20 at most I'd say although I'd like to stick with 13-15. Kind of high in some ways since I don't think these guys were exceptionally skilled.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)21:36 No.15041712
Okay, so a legionnaire gets paid 10 gold a year.
And instructor in the capital gets paid 13-17.

Taking that into consideration, I think we should offer 13 gold per year as combat instructors, and if they stay on the combat roster and actually fight, they get a combat bonus (negotiated later, but around 20 or 30 gold each, maybe more for exemplary service).
    >> Generic 05/24/11(Tue)21:42 No.15041772

    Also mentioned in IRC:
Skywings have seven riders remaining, all mounted (plus 4 spare valks [total 11 viable mounts], + 3 crippled/lamed valks [BREEDING STOCK!])
    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)21:42 No.15041782
I can live with this wage.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 05/24/11(Tue)21:42 No.15041786
    >man, where is everyone?

"13 gold dragoons a year. You and your men will train your wing back to full strength, and I will provide combat bonuses to any men who preform exceptionally in the future. I will also put forth half of the funds needed to maintain your mounts" you offer evenly.

Captain Corinth smiles, it is not a good smile, full of holes and rot "I believe we can do business sir. Though some extra pay for myself and my lieutenants would be appreciated." he answers as the city of Northmont finally slips past the horizon.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)21:50 No.15041822
    "Will 15 a year suffice?"
    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)21:51 No.15041856
Who knows. A fair number of people showed up on the previous days when you didn't show up but I guess people thought there would be no CQ today.

Might as well give them a bonus of half their wage. There's only like 7 guys left and they deserve it for the crap they put up with this campaign.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)21:52 No.15041879
    Correction: changing that to:
"14 a year for your lieutenants, and 15 for yourself. Is that agreeable?"
    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)21:55 No.15041918
Misread the statement. I'll second this.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 05/24/11(Tue)22:04 No.15042005
You think for a moment before responding "14 for your lieutenants and 15 for yourself."

The mans grin widens "I look forward to my continued business with you then, sir."

You accept his extended hand "Excellent, you and your men have leave to return to my holdings in DragonsReach to retrain and properly re-equip." again the man salutes, before flying off to talk with his men. Before dusk the small group is gone, and the force is making its camp. Considering the fact that you wont reach the area you plan on striking for a few more days, you realize that you will need to find something to do during the ride, as a gentle spring drizzle begins to fall.

Why not use this chance to debate the merits of elementalism with the two other commanders in a controlled, and calmer setting rather than directly in battle? At the very least, we can find out from them where they've seen elementalism in action.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)22:10 No.15042085
Good idea. We might be able to get a better idea of Uurlanthi magic deployment protocols.

Also, we should still be practicing elementalism with the other combat elementalists, working on control and team efforts.
Have the water elementalists been able to recreate that hydro-shield that the Uurlanthi water elementalist was able to create that one time?

You try to spend the night training, you really do... but Jayne was insistant, and, well, you have no defenses against her when she is acting the way she was. The next morning you ride up next to Quintus, as he seemed more open to the arcane than Spuria "Ahh, Commander Trentz, to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?" he greets you after saluting.

"I had hoped to discuss the finer points of the arcane with you." you respond "As well as your mistrust of it."

The man shakes his head "Make your case then, my friend, and I will rebuff."

    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)22:28 No.15042284
"The biggest reason we should pursue it is because it's another factor that will allow our forces to fight more effectively. From experience, the arcane has allowed me to take on forces larger than mine with significantly less losses than would normally be possible. Furthermore, it's allowed me to take fortified positions much faster and without the need to construct siege equipment. It even has its uses beyond causing direct harm - I've had elementalists used to counter the enemy's use of the arcane or used them to help survive the siege. Disease, fires and water were less of a problem thanks to the arcane. I will concede the arcane can be unpredictable at times, however, with proper training it can turn the tide of battle. I know my maniple would not have survived as well as it had without the use of the arcane. Especially with what the Uurlanth have been throwing at us recently."
    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)22:30 No.15042314
I don't remember the last time you read and I don't even remember them all myself but we're still pretty buffed out with fissure elementalism. We recently got a general increase in all our skills in that field. As well, we can throw some stones around and we improved our stone sense I think, so we can detect people further away and more accurately tell numbers.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)22:32 No.15042331
"The arcane is dangerous, I'll not argue that. But the force multiplier that it represents should not be discounted. The offensive and defensive flexibility offered by various uses of the powers can allow a smaller force to hold its own against a larger one.
"There's also the problem of Uurlanthi mages. I've seen their deployment doctrine; they have the pure numbers and the fanaticism to use their elementalists to self-destructive lengths. Without defensive elementalists of your own to counteract enemy mages, you become open to an enemy attack which you would be hard-pressed to counter.
"Finally, not all elementalists need to be used on front-line service. Water elementalists can be used to create wells when a source of fresh water is not available, and earth elementalists can put up defensive structures much faster than even an engineering company."
    >> tactical routine omicron !/tOwVz0x0k 05/24/11(Tue)22:34 No.15042354
Mention also how use of earth elementalism allows one to detect numbers, size, and location of anything living touching the ground within an area. This can turn an incoming ambush into a slaughter, and reveal that a force is making it'sself look larger or smaller than it is.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)22:37 No.15042395
Oh, good point. We need to show that elementalism isn't all about unpredictable front-line combat, it has utility and intel-gathering functions as well.
    >> Taffer 05/24/11(Tue)22:40 No.15042433
    OH SHI---, Its Commnader Quest.

I'd like to second all of these and also say that life elementalism has proven to be good for the men. With it the time it takes for a man to recover from battle, injury or disease has been lower dramatically
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/24/11(Tue)22:47 No.15042512
Alright, looks like in addition to front-line and artillery use, we want to emphasize the usage of elementalists to shut down enemy casters, create wells for our troops, put up earthen bulwarks, get accurate headcounts of enemy troops, and be able to heal wounded legionnaires in a fraction of the time for regular healing, as well as healing normally crippling injuries.
Also include weather prediction and control for air elementalists, and the ability to read the enemy's mind and create maniple-size illusions with mystics.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 05/24/11(Tue)22:47 No.15042516
"The value of the arcane as a force multiplier is far to great to overlook. Without it I would not have been as successful as I have been, in fact, I very likely would have perished before this point." you answer.

"Yes, force multipliers are wonderful, but what can you say to counter the immense destructiveness of those arcanists who lose control of their powers?" Quintus replies, still smiling.

You sigh "And without any defenses against the more numerous arcanists Uurlanth has, Degnar may fall. They send them on suicide strikes, overwork them to the point of collapsing on the field, and still I encounter them repeatedly, and in ever increasing numbers. Even if we can continue to slay them, their numbers will not diminish, a few will become skilled, and Degnar will bleed for it." you reply, perhaps more forcefully than is appropriate.

"I am certain that Degnar will find a way to counter this new threat, as it has countered every other threat that has faced it for the last five-thousand years. Counters and defenses with the possibility of force multiplication is not enough to sway my stance, my friend. And from what I have heard, several such losses of control have nearly caused your death."
    >> Anonymous 05/24/11(Tue)22:55 No.15042603

"There are risks in using any other weapon of war. Wield a sword wrong and you risk cutting yourself, elementalism is no different. It's better to train and attempt to better control and understand these abilities than to let them go unchecked and potentially cause something disastrous to happen."
    >> Maximus 05/24/11(Tue)22:56 No.15042614
"Battle is full of chaos and distractions. An archer could just as possibly lose control of his aim in certain situations and put allies at risk as well. It is true elementalists have more potential for damage, however, I've been walking into the use of elementalism with so much unknown to me. Each time I face the Uurlanth, their arcanists are throwing things I never thought possible. And I've reworked my elementalism training to help ensure such accidents are less likely to occur. And I have to say - the sight of over half of a unit of elite Uurlanth cavalry collapsing into a pit forming underneath them is a beautiful sight."

As well, mention the non-combat uses like the wells, helping to stop disease, keeping fires down during the siege, and how we used it to cross the river when there was no bridge in our earlier campaign.

    >> Anonymous 05/24/11(Tue)22:59 No.15042637
Nearly, yes. We are learning blind, unfortunately; every profession has the opportunity for errors as its practitioners gain skill in their craft. Normally these errors are mostly prevented by having instructors watch over those who are learning their skills, but obviously we have none to teach us here. We have no choice but to do it the hard way. Still, as long as we keep the bulk of the arcane in the hands of those who are loyal and disciplined, and do not waste their lives carelessly, in the decades to come we will have capable instructors who will be able to guide those developing their powers- to help them avoid the very mistakes that we are making so often now. It is the principles of discipline, unity, and intelligence which have been Dengar's greatest strength against her enemies; as long as those are held close as we use the arcane, our arcanists will be as much a cut above our enemies' as our soldiers are.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 05/24/11(Tue)23:07 No.15042693
You shrug "Combat is full of distractions, an archer could easily lose his aim in the chaos, but we consider it an acceptable risk. I have reworked my training to compensate for such distractions, and once I have perfected the techniques, my own arcaninsts will be trained similarly.."

"So destructive, a soldier can contribute in peacetime as a normal citizen, but what of arcanists?" Quintus asks.

You smile "Creating walls in seconds, diverting groundwater for wells, speeding along ships. Elementalism has many uses off the battlefield. as to magic, I have yet to encounter any arcane smiths but it would be nice to have fresh versions of some of the arcana I have."

The man sighs "I suppose it rests on the shoulders of your arcanists then. I am not averse to adopting proven, however briefly, tactics and tricks. I simply do not wish to unduly damage my chances of success."

"Have you seen any of them in action?" you ask, the midday sun beating down on the two of you.

"Oh, more than a few. Impressive work, right up until the one impaled himself at least. There was the mage that tried to save himself from an enemy soldier with a small blast, he destroyed more than half of the battalion he was in, along with half of the opposite battalion. Even one who was struck by lightning... in a forest. And to top it all off, another man burst into flame, spontaneously, outside of combat."

    You grimace "Whos were they?"

Quintus frowns "2 ours and 2 theirs. Now, if you would excuse me, I have a feeling that one of my men is looking to start some trouble." he excuses himself, indicating the escalating tussle on one of the wagons. For all of their usefulness, there is something to be said about the benefits of marching.

You spend the next night in meditation, which is successfull enough to make up for the time spent wasted last night, you feel. The next night you work through the training manual you found, Collin actually applauding as he watched you.

Next to Quintus sits an older man, in gentle cloths a small stack of parchment before him; aid, you label him mentally. Spuria sits at the other chair, a woman that could be her sister to her right, and a scruffy, small dirty man to her right, eyes shifting, twitching nervously when you enter.

"Ahh, Commander Trentz so good of you to come. I already know Miss Kyrosh, and Wulf, though the orc I do not know. To my right is Trespus, my aid in all things numerical and political, as well as my adviser in all things political." he indicates the soft man sitting next to him, before unrolling a map "And I am certain that Commander Spuria will introduce you to her aid and adviser if you are so good as to introduce us to your new friend."

I'm becoming concerned that we're ignoring our experienced, career soldiers.
By all rights, Gaius or Cornelius should also be attending this meeting, since Gaius is a highly experienced captain, and Cornelius is command material.

"this is one of my commanders, his name is Blackbird and he is one of the last of the Old Clan Orcs. He is an expert at unconventional tactics and guerrilla warfare" also we need to start rotating Gaius, Blackbird and Cornelius when we go to meetings like this
    >> Maximus 05/25/11(Wed)00:29 No.15043513
I share your feelings. We should keep it in mind in the future. Regardless though, I imagine we're going to have to have a staff meeting with our maniple after this to lay out more details plans so we can talk to them then about what they think about the situation perhaps.

Might want to take out the other assorted black operations part in the event one of them thinks he might be involved in assassination as unlikely as that is. I think the long-range recon and enemy harassment is sufficient.
    >> Taffer 05/25/11(Wed)00:31 No.15043530
I don't see anything wrong with this. We are gonna be jumping a supply train; a heavily defended one, but still a supply train. So if we get to know their route we can ambush them. And how do we get to know their route, through Blackbird's scouting.
    >> Generic 05/25/11(Wed)00:34 No.15043560

I'm not a fan of people that twitch when we enter a tent or room... And Spuria's dislike of the arcane kind of makes her a perfect candidate for having a secret mystic... who would expect it?

I suggest we consider giving her friend a quick scan with the detection crystal, unless she introduces him as someone who should be twitchy and nervous... such as an Uurlanthi traitor?

"This is Blackbird, Orc of the old clans, and my expert in long range reconnaissance, small unit and non-traditional tactics, as well as raiding and psychological warfare." you introduce him, gaining a surprised look from the other soldiers in attendance.

"Interesting relic you've dug up." The woman to Spurias right quips.

"Silence." Spuria chides her "That rude woman is my aid, Annius. The, unfortunate, Ive brought with me, is Dorin. A bandit captain that I offered the opportunity of serving me, or facing his punishment. Needless to say, he is uncomfortable around proper, upstanding folk like us."

Quintus smiles "Excellent, now that we are all introduced, are we ready to begin planning?"
    >> Maximus 05/25/11(Wed)00:43 No.15043643
Definitely. Time to hear what this guy knows about the incoming forces, how long until they arrive and what the terrain is like.

Can anyone think of any reason to keep a bandit captain around as a retinue member? or why this captain would be -HERE-?

The only one I can think of is "he knows the area exceptionally well", and I can't imagine she caught him in this area?

I can't help but feel that it is a cover of some sort.

Anyone else for giving him a scan of the crystal?
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)00:50 No.15043727

1 vote against scan. We don't need to be suspicious in the middle of a strategy meeting. Do it later, be all subtle for once.

"A bandit captain?" you ask, confused, and not fully trusting the man.

"Oh, he is quite skilled in the same fields your Orc is, and not hard on the eyes either." she replies, smirking "He can travel long distances quickly, set an ambush effectively... everything a good, upstanding Degnarian legionnaire would not lower themselves too. Now, if we could move on to the briefing."

Quintus smirks, setting out a score of markers on the map, a long, thick blue line drawn across the center of it. "As I'm certain you are aware there is no deviation in the height of the terrain this deep into the Halrian valley. Our plan is simple, we will strike as a unified force from the south. My own maniple to the center, while the Maniples of the two of you wi-"

He is unable to finish his plan as Blackbird swipes the pieces from the map "Fool. Your plan will only scatter and frighten our target."

before Blackbird can continue, Quintus is standing, glaring at the Orc "That was most rude, my friend" his soft voice strange with anger "What is your excuse."

"Experience is superior to formality. rank is bested by knowledge." The orc recites, his voice almost reverent.

The man shakes his head "Commander Trentz, if you support your man I will hear his plan." the threat left unspoken though it hangs there nonetheless.

Support Blackbird, but give him a warning not to do anything like this. These people are not from our maniple, which is incidentally full of bros, and have differing attitudes to discipline.

Also, Blackbird has a point. Why are we attacking in one big rush anyway?
    >> Maximus 05/25/11(Wed)01:11 No.15043954
"Blackbird has yet to fail me in matters along these lines and I do support him. However, please restrain yourself in voicing your objections like this in the future Blackbird. I'm sure the commander would have allowed comments to be given once he was done giving his plan out."

Yeah, the plan isn't the greatest but we shouldn't let Blackbird walk all over him in front of two lower commanders. We have to speak out against Blackbird a little here at least publically. We can tell Blackbird in private after he was right to do what he did but he has to be more careful in how he does it in the future.

"Balckbird" you reply, your tone harsh.

He nods "In a situation like this, you must strike decisively, yes." he slowly sets up the markers again, more carefully, and with more integration. "Leave them no choice but to flee, and in one direction. However, the safe direction will be the least safe of them. We will strike at either dawn or dusk, as the High Commander was no doubt planning. A small, skilled force will catch the fleeing soldiers, while two more solid forces will prevent them from sprinting on, or running home. None will survive." as he finishes, markers set to indicate legionary batalions to the east and west of the column, light infantry and blackbirds unit north, the rest striking from the south.

"Hunters gambit, solid. I normally prefer the false roadblock myself but..." the scruffy adviser quips.

Quintus sighs "And how do you propose our forces deploy as you suggest?"

"The night is our ally. Had we enough moonseye paste I would have insisted on a nighttime assault." Blackbird replies plainly.

"We would have to move further west for that." Wulf quips.

"In two days, unless they speed up, or we move to meet them." Quintus replies "And I will support Mr Blackbirds plan, if Commanders Trentz and Vitellius support it." You nod in agreement. Spuria does the same.

"What I want to know is how you intend to keep our forces from being discovered before the proper time." she asks.

"My elementalists and myself will set a series of trenches and tunnels to see to that." You reply to the silent table.

"I will want to test the tunnels, but it would seem that this is our plan now." Quintus half sighs looking at the map again.

"As will I, but I dont want any of your elementalists operating near where my maniple is resting." Spuria replies.

At that, the meeting ends, and all in attendance disperse to see the area prepared. Sunrise on the morning after the one you are now rapidly approaching as you dig out trenches and tunnels to strike from you will strike the convoy.
