The evening is still young as you walk through your maniple, but your soldiers are so drained that most of them are already retiring for the night. Soldiers not already abed are helping their wounded comrades to the medicae tents or bringing their gear to the smiths in hopes of getting the item in question repaired sooner. You eventually find yourself on the battlefield again, where Laelith is turning the now vacant greathelm Lord Wellis wore to his death over in her hands. "Its quite mundane, save the decorations." she informs you as you draw nearer. "I hope you are coming here from the medicae tents, Justinian" she adds, noting the hobble in your step.

"Indeed, I was just there making sure my men are receiving the aid they need. My wounds can wait for now. I assume whatever was going on with his helmet was due to the mage he had with him then?"

We will need to have this battlefield scoured for possible arcana, then.

He was still able to do some of his stuff even after the mage was dead.

"No, I will be headed there once I know the men have been seen to, my injuries can wait for now." you reply easily.

Laelith levels a glare at you "I suppose I will have to drag you to the tent then. Sometimes we think it is better when your wounds leave you incapacitated." she sighs, the flames on her torch growing taller.

"I was headed to the medicae by way of the battlefield, no need to burn me." you defend yourself, taking a step back "Just, make sure we dont miss any arcana on the field." Laelith arches an eyebrow at you as you retreat, not even dignifying your hasty defense with an answer.

It takes until morning for the surgeons and elementalists to work their way over to you, they didnt even see fit to wake you when the elementalist repaired your ribs. In fact, it is Sansa that wakes you a few hours later, in one hand a small writing kit, in the other a list. "How is it you wish to start your day, Commander?"

"Was cornelius hurt when his unit was hit? How is Lena doing?"

Like Maximus said, have Blackbird's team out setting traps and spoiling nearby water sources.

Did our scavanger teams find anything? Did we capture any survivors whom we might be able to interrogate?
    >> Maximus 02/08/11(Tue)21:29 No.13831491
Nonsense. You forget that Justinian Trentz is badass. I suppose we should get to making a report to the commander in the south that we've stopped the two incoming lords and are currently going to be trapping the land until we receive new orders. Perhaps we should hit the gold mines to the south although I wonder if we should try to negotiate ransom prices from the lordling's father now. Those gold mines could be a nice bargaining chip for more money.
    >> Laurentius 02/08/11(Tue)21:29 No.13831494

That's the thing - I'm wondering if we can still get money without raiding the cities. The lordling is going to rule over these lands once Blentus is gone, meaning those are his gold mines. Would his father spend more cash to bribe us from hitting those holdings since they are going to be apart of his family soon?

Seconding checking up on Lena and Cornelius.

Also, seconding the trapping of nearby water sources.

We really need to have our numbers replenished, though; our maniple is down to half-strength, and the Marauders are at a quarter strength. Without coming back up to normal strength, we can't use them.
    >> Generic 02/08/11(Tue)21:37 No.13831588

How would gold mines belonging to a captured lord be of any use as bargaining chips?

But we should go and collect that gold.
    >> Maximus 02/08/11(Tue)21:37 No.13831590
Nope. His father went through the forest but managed to escape by Valk air-lift. So that source of ransom is still open to us. Plus his bride to be can likely be ransomed off to him too.

We asked earlier - we're not getting any reinforcements anytime soon. We best hope we're not getting hit with another lord anytime soon.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 02/08/11(Tue)21:37 No.13831592

"Well enough, the only other one of us that I suspect is wounded would be Wulf, judging by his limp. He's better at hiding his wounds than you at the very least. Lena is recovering quickly enough, if you wnated we could have her visit you." Sansa suggests.

"Before responding to that I would like to know if anything of note has been scavenged, the parchment and quill you brought me, and for you to set Blackbird to trapping this area as well." you reply amiably.

Inform him that we've dealt with the two lords incoming from the north. Both of their armies were smashed and only one lord escaped. We're going to maintain our position here until he orders otherwise and begin trapping the area and perhaps raiding. I guess give him a decent idea on the state of our maniple as well.

"You can start by rolling up your trousers." you reply sternly, Wulf sheepishly rolls the right leg up and stops, grinning sheepishly, you steal a page from Laeliths book and arch an eyebrow in response.

The wound isnt terribly large, and has clearly been washed out with water. You want to admonish the boy on his foolishness, but by now he would know your hypocrisy on the matter. "There was work to be done, and when you are indisposed Sansa needs my help around the camp..." he begins.

"She can handle the camp well enough on her own. It would be worse for your wound to fester and take a leg from one of my most able soldiers." you scold the boy, his response dying on his lips "But before you head off to have that scratch taken care of, I would like to have your opinion on how the battle went, in comparison to how you had predicted such an engagement would end."

Wulf sits quietly for a moment before responding "Standing to fight may have worked in the mind of the older soldiers, but considering the numbers it seemed foolhardy to stand to fight, especially with enemy forces behind us. I was the best spoken of that side of the table, and I regularly best Cornelius at our simulated battles, so it fell to me to defend our stance. I would rather live to fight and win another day than stand to die for my duty and honor. So long as Degnar wins in the long run. I was also banking on you having a better plan once we met up with you." he finishes, shocking you with his blunt honesty

I likewise would have preferred not to have fought such a large force. Had I my way I would have harried them night and day with our superior mobility until they were destroyed. But we had orders. Sometimes the orders might not seem the best path we could take, but they are not suggestions. We had to hold them. The reason is simple: They could not be allowed to fall upon the flank of our greater force, smashing the vital supplies and soft underbelly of the army.

While many of our men died here, we saved a great many more... and perhaps the entire campaign.

"We were tired and becoming dangerously undermanned. To be perfectly honest, once I heard their numbers, I was worried myself but it had to be done.

Heh. I still can't believe THAT many of them fit in the damn holes! And they marched into each and every one of them! Really glad I took the time to train that cavern-making skill. If I wasn't so sure we could get the field properly trapped, I probably would have gone with your vote."

Eh for the hell of it.
""Normally I would agree with you but the terrain wouldn't of improved if we left, as well as retreating being a danger. The men were already exhausted while the enemy are relatively fresh. Furthermore, if the enemy used their valkyrie's to barrage our wagons with rocks, we'd of lost our mobility and the enemy could of engaged us when they wished. By staying where we were, we could prepare the terrain and give the men much needed rest to fight."

"Battlefield preparation is everything. and if Gaius and Uurist are any indicator of their generation of soldier, I can see how past wars were as bloody as they were now." he replies

"Indeed, it is. To be honest, I would have sided with you if there was any chance of more agreeable terrain being found further south. But as it was, the risks of searching for a situation we knew would not be found outweighed any possible gains." you reply, glad that the boy is learning.

"Taking their friends to the medicae tents..." she trails off.

"Did they look angry about it?" you prompt her, Lena shakes her head. "And id anyone have to be ordered to help you to the tents?" again, she shakes her head. You let the silence hang for a moment before asking "How did your battle with the Uurlanthi mage leave you?"

"Exhausted. I could still stand but... my head still throbs, my arms are still drained. I think I will need to increase my arcane knowledge to better combat any mages I encounter in the future." the young mage answers, somewhere between worry and pride on her face and in her voice.

Yes, I did let her off easily. She has never been in the military before so I am considering this her introduction to discipline. But both you and she should know that next time I will not be so lenient. Disobedience and disrespect get those you care about killed, and none of us want that. Lena cringes slightly at that, clearly knowing how it well could have went for her sister. "Speaking of Bellatrix, has she opened up to you more lately?"

Lena sighs "Not very much, no. She spends more time with Aurelius than I. She still protects me, but, I think its more to keep Wulf from getting closer, she still doesnt trust him with me, even insisting on us continuing to share a tent. The transition to life in the Legion has been hard for her, protecting me is all she ever knew before this. I.... is that all, Commader?" "What does this mean for this soldier?" you promp Laelith, curoius.

"Well, Life elementalism is also sometimes known as nature elementalism, at least when it is used to command plants as opposed to living creatures. The Syptionus Vine feeds off of the power of a nature elementalist, and, acts as a constant source of power to them, much like my torch, shockstones for Wulf, or a bag of rocks would for you. As the mans power grows, the vine will grow as well, covering more of his body. It was not uncommon for the greatest of nature elementalists to be mistaken for awakened trees, so complete was their symbiosis with the vine. The vine will provide him sustenance once it is large enough, though it will drain him until then. With training he will be able to compel the plant to secrete spas and fluids with varying qualities, or to lash out as he could compel any other plant to." Well, if we've got a week, we should have time to sack/raid another town or two. Last chance to gain some more cash before going home, after all. And lay some more traps, I suppose, although we should be careful to inform our replacement of exactly what we've done.
    >> Anonymous 02/09/11(Wed)01:45 No.13834451
Ah yeah, that. We can report that to the Second in our debrief too, he should be pleased. Vast amounts of shipping will be lost before they figure out what happened.
    >> Maximus 02/09/11(Wed)01:46 No.13834458
Think we should start studying that book on combat we picked up? Pax said it would improve our fighting stat but eventually if we were good enough, it would let us improve the fighting of our men as well. It'd be another way to buff our troops to be better.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 02/09/11(Wed)01:48 No.13834476
Maybe hold that off for when we're on our way back to the capital? It'll take a week or two of marching, even with our wagons.

The week continues fairly uneventfully. You fortify your position enough to feel comfortable and send Wulf off to raid the nearest gold mine, and help Blackbird and his men set up more traps outside of the forest. However, with so many of your men recovering from wounds or fatigue that is about the extent of your efforts while you wait for your relieving commander. The dwarf coming to replace you is an old goatish looking commander, and not much for words or conversation past getting a good idea of where your traps are, though you get the impression that he approves of neither you or your traps.

The ride to your stash goes off equally uneventfully, only stopping at the river long enough to create a large bed of incredibly sturdy spikes in the riverbed. Eventually your caravan slows to a halt outside of your stash. Its about midday when you reach it, and by your estimate it will take until tomorrow morning for your men to find a way to load it all onto your wagons while still being able to ride them themselves. "Commander" a voice asks from behind you, Aurelius, unless your ear betrays you. "I, might I speak my mind?"
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 02/09/11(Wed)01:59 No.13834556
"Of course, Captain. Or would you prefer a more private meeting rather than one in front of the men?"
    >> Anonymous 02/09/11(Wed)01:59 No.13834557
we need to test out how well we can affect metal items at some point.

    "Speak your mind, Captain"

"Of course. To be honest, I wanted to speak to you." I think we should speak to him in private.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 02/09/11(Wed)02:06 No.13834627
"Of course, Aurelius, what is on your mind?" you reply, watching your soldiers move the loot.

"Well, I realize that you need to teach Bellatrix discipline, and that you are being merciful. But she has been doing the work of four strong men for the better part of half a month. And as strong as she is... she scarcely has the energy to talk lately, was too tired to help Lena after she was wounded in our last battle, has only put fourth enough effort to watching Wulf and her sister to say she is doing so... I dont mean to question your orders, but your running her into the ground, Commander."
    >> Maximus 02/09/11(Wed)02:10 No.13834671
"I'll keep your words in mind Aurelius. I intended to speak to her soon. Out of curiosity, has she said anything to you regarding her situation or her sister? Or does she still keep to herself?"

"I see. Well, answer me this then: Do you think she has learned her lesson? If you can honestly tell me you think she has then I will see about allowing her to resume her normal duties training under Collin.

Be aware, Aurelius, that you will be doing her no favor if you simply say so out of compassion. If she hasn't learned anything and smarts off to a Legion commander next time, I won't be able to protect her. Nor should I."
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 02/09/11(Wed)02:11 No.13834691
"And is this any different than boot camp was, especially for a recruit that was being mouthy to the Drill Decurion?
"We are on our way back to the capital, Aurelius. Is Bellatrix ready to march in formation and salute officers? Has she accepted that she is in the Legion now, and must adhere to Imperial Legion protocol? Or is she going to get herself flogged by mouthing back to a superior officer?"
    >> Anonymous 02/09/11(Wed)02:12 No.13834701
"When you disrespect your commanding officer, there are consequences. However, I feel I've had my due from her. I'll have her taken off latrine duty soon enough."
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 02/09/11(Wed)02:20 No.13834782
"Well, that depends on whether or not you think she has learned her lesson." you reply, Aurelius opens his mouth to reply, but you cut him off "Remember, that informing me that she has out of compassion will be no favor to her. If she is that disrespectful to another superior officer I can not, and should not, protect her from the proper punishment again."

"Yes, I believe that she has." Aurelius answers after a few minutes of pondering.

"Then I will return her to her usual duties soon enough." you inform your captain, he salutes and makes to leave, but you catch his shoulder. "Has she said anything of her past or relationship with her sister to you of late?"

Aurelius ponders again "I, well, it is a sensitive matter to her, and..."
    >> Maximus 02/09/11(Wed)02:22 No.13834807
"I'm not asking for details from you Aurelius. I simply need to know how she's adapting to her new life. If she's still keeping everything to herself, eventually it's going to do her more harm than good. Beyond you, her sister is someone who she can be extremely close to but she doesn't say a thing to her. I think those two both need each other to lean on in the future but Bellatrix is too used to shouldering this burden on her own."
    >> Anonymous 02/09/11(Wed)02:23 No.13834809
I won't order you to tell me, nor her. But if it's something I should be aware of, as both her Commander and, I hope, friend... I would encourage you to have her speak to me on the matter some time.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 02/09/11(Wed)02:24 No.13834817
"If she has, then well enough. It means she is adjusting better."

I don't want to pry too much, especially if Bellatrix really is beginning to develop mysticism powers. If we're going to ask, it'll be to her directly. We don't want to endanger any trust she might have put in Aurelius.

That said, have a little meeting with Gaius, and if he also says that Bellatrix seems to have learned her lesson, then take her off latrine duty and put her workload back to normal.
    >> Anonymous 02/09/11(Wed)02:24 No.13834819

Agreed. Any details should be from Bellatrix herself.

There is no need to divulge her secrets, friend." you assure the man "I just need to know how well she has been adapting to life in the legion, and you are one of the few people she seems to be able to open up to." Aurelius shifts slightly at having the fact so blatantly pointed out to him "And since she doesnt seem to talk with her sister about whatever it is that is burdening her."

"She seems torn between the life she was thrust into and her new surroundings. the transition is more or less complete, but old habits..." Aurelius informs you, looking relieved that that is all the more he has to tell you.

"At least she has been to exhausted to snap at you of late." you offer lightheartedly.

Aurelius sighs "No, I fear she maintains a very special ire within herself for me."

make sure we have time to test out our elementalism on metal items, armor, weapons, etc.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 02/09/11(Wed)02:39 No.13834965
Confirm with Gaius that he thinks Bellatrix is ready. No need to RP it out.
If he says yes, then take Bellatrix off of punishment detail.

Tell her that she's working with a clean slate now; she will need to keep it that way.

Also, will the nomads now be leaving our company? The night before they leave, we should share a good drink with all of them.

Well, can't think of anything else to do on the trip back.

    Practice our elementalism.
Fairly spend time with our ladies. (Maybe encourage the whole "Communal tent" plan?)
Ride with the men and speak with them some.
Debrief our elementalist cadre. We want them prepared for strict questioning when we get back to the Reach.

In addition to this, let's see if we can secure some sort of agreement with Lennis. See if we can forge a lasting relationship with his clan, where we provide protection and supplies in return for loyalty and, eventually, fighting men loyal to us rather than the Imperial command structure.

The only problem with not staying for the rest of the offensive, is that we won't get to be part of the Triumph when the High Commander returns to the capital.

But if the war takes longer than thought, we might get a Round 2 to do some more looting, raiding, and more impressions of Sherman.
    >> Anonymous 02/09/11(Wed)03:17 No.13835293
Well, we participated quite heavily and are actually a minor hero, (or now maybe not so minor) so I imagine we'll have a spot. Likely up near the front, even. I mean, hell, our information gathering probably saved the offensive from a bleak, crushing demise at the hands of a foe that "shouldn't be there" at all.

Plus, I'm eagerly awaiting our return even as it is. Pax has intimated that something special awaits us, and we've been nothing short of a legendary strategist and tactician. We've beaten a force three to four times our size, two forces over twice our size, and two forces equal to us, all while securing key objectives, operating deep in enemy territory, and saving the Empire's ass from being blindsided by 70,000 men.

    >We've beaten a force three to four times our size
If you are talking about Lord Stant's force, it was actually five times our size. He had a cohort-sized force, and we beat him with a maniple.

    We're just that badass.
