375 KB Zero Space General [Aka Skirmish Quest] OrbitalCommand !w68jcmPgR6 11/29/10(Mon)23:49 No.12975246
The Zero Space universe is a reality wrought with dead humans, wars fought by proxies, alien godraces , human frailty, epic spacebattles, limited superscience and gruelling armor warfare.

Setting ranges from the homestead feeling of the outer fringe worlds to the cities inside a planetary fortress to the blood misted rings of star clusters.

The tone set in this world ranges between space westerns, rag tag imperialism of the fractured Galactic forces, the exorbitant classism of the Legitimates, the Originals, and the proxies, and the fantastical warrior spirituality of an enemy that has never dealt with a ferocious an enemy as the human races' shadow.

And with that said, writing for this universe faces a few challenges one of which is its struggle to stand above the already established space operas and megawar series like starcraft, warhammer, star wars, starship troopers and many others. Conversely its aim is to revive the classic themes that drove to explore humanity in terms of their meaning as a race which was accomplished in works like Legend of Galactic Heroes, Ender's Game, and Battlestar Galactica.

So post some short stories here if you'd like discuss world building with fellow writefags here while I animate for fucking ever. I will post some once I get good headway in my assignment.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 11/29/10(Mon)23:53 No.12975294
    >Fine, I'll post that thing I wrote for the post-mission of the Homefront Operation.

On the command bridge of the Lucky O'Reilly, following the extraction of civilians at Hearth.

Major Walker watched from the view screen as the last of the Pelicans lift off from Hearth. As the Pelican climbed higher and gained speed, a flight of Storks flew from the direction it was headed, leaving towers of fire in their wake.

The Major snorted in anger. Command wouldn’t clear any air strikes, yet in the end, they were going to level the infected area anyway. He shook his head in frustration. He could have saved more of his men’s lives if they had let him call in some air strikes to begin with. He could have saved more of the civilians if they’d let him. But no, bureaucracies and politics prevented him from running the operation his way.

He sighed once more, dabbing his cigar in the ash tray. Evergrad was likely to have his ass for this. And this time, he didn’t know if Fierstrom would back him up. Penny-pinching tightwad Overseer probably couldn’t realize that if he could do things his way, it would probably cost less in the long run. Instead of having to call in a Colossus and a Chimera, he could have called in one, maybe two air strikes, and gotten the same results. But no, he had to follow brass, politics, and protocol, all to appease the higher-ups who only saw numbers, not men.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 11/29/10(Mon)23:54 No.12975306

“Numbers and men, huh?” Walker quietly whispered to himself. What did Fierstrom think of Bravo and the Sword of Damocles? What did she think of the men and women following her – following him and the Admiral – as her personal Executor Unit? He heard Overseer Evergrad say something about Fierstrom being some big-shot politician’s daughter. While Walker wasn’t “one to judge on blood,” as he would often say, he couldn’t help but wonder if the views she expressed that day wasn’t the result of that. Any other higher ranking officer would have had Walker order his men to hold a suicide line to allow the civilians to escape; then would have left them there to die.

But no, instead she gave him and Weird a rather free reign to do what they wanted. And she had even commended him for his choice to conscript the members of the terrorist “Galadorian Liberation Force” instead of executing them outright! Yet later, she would forget that his men were, well, men, and would occasionally treat them as automatons of sorts.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 11/29/10(Mon)23:54 No.12975314

Another heavy sigh from the Major. Just what did she think of them, he wondered? What did she think of HIM? Probably not highly, not after that “Capture the Flag” simulation. He stared into the glowing embers of his cigar before bringing it to his mouth. “Women and politicians. Can’t ever understand either one of ‘em,” he muttered, before taking a drag from his cigar.

“Sir, did you say something?” McMillan asked.

“Nope. Just get the boys back home and in the barracks, would ya?”

    “Sir, yes sir.”

A final thought passed through his mind. Were they seen as nothing but pawns? He shook the thought from his mind. There would be time for that kind of thinking. But now, it was just another day, and another battle won, with more reports and debriefings to be made. Maybe if he was an automaton, this part wouldn’t be so unpleasant.

    >That's the end of that post-operation write-up.

    Generall history timeline

    > Earth is destroyed by a prematurely exploding sun. But an expedition team was already sent out on a "millenium" long trip into the stars to find a new planet.
    >Upon arriving on their destination, the expedition team sets up a communication system that pierces through the fabric of space time and communicates instantly
    > Earth in their remaining days freezes their population, and "teleports" their populace through the reaches of space.
    >The expeditioners known as " The Landers" recieve human data and reconstructs a percentage of Earth's populace. This number is stricken from memory.
    > Earth is destroyed, along with her humans.

    >Elsewhere, the new humans , perfectly cloned and functional arrives at the new world, named Terra, after their fallen home. The Landers pass on the torch to a new generation of humanity, who will live on to continue humanity with a fresh start. A lander cloning himself every century to oversee the progress of man. These landers keep their identities secret and is known only to the ancient machines they have placed all around Terra and onwards.

As long as I'm here I have a quick rules question. How do to hit rolls work exactly with respect to range? I seem to remember you can fire at things outside of your range for -1 to hit per space. Does it work the other way, like you get +1 if they are inside your range? I feel like I saw a couple of hits on higher numbers than they should be last game.
I had something else but I don't remember it just now.

Also I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to have a thread archived with in-depth rules explanations/ FAQs that new people can be referred to.

    part 2

    >Humanity spreads into the brightly colored reaches of space as opposed to the black desolate void that used to hang over them back on Earth. New sciences were being introduced to the human race covertly and at times even legitimately through enlightened thinkers, scientists, and engineers. The race has exploded into a frenzy of expansion, near unlimited resources and the means to get from one planet to another with ease using starships.

    >One Lander who was leading the race to the stars explores an ancient shrine that evidenced an ancient culture predating the Earth's existence.

    > The ancient shrine was not abandoned.

    >Immediately after the Pendleton incident, the colony of Thousand Steps gets destroyed outright, an immense naval fleet consisting of planet destroyers blanket the "sky" of the once colorful space.

    Time Line part 3

    > Humanity drives back in a panic, a space police force armed only for insurrections and space pirates stood no chance against a full millitarized threat.

    > Leading the counter offensive were a band of space pirates, unthawed millitary leaders, equipped with poorly outdated earth weaponry. It fails but humanity is afforded a chance to escape to the secret reaches of space where no stars guide their ships. Humanity is forever recognized as heretics by a faceless enemy.

    > One by one colonies fall to space terrors and the overwhelming power of an enemy space fleet. For every world destroyed was a second afforded to a slowly building human resistance.

    > The last of the Landers makes himself known and installs himself as a naval commander of a new galactic command fleet. With humanity depleting and "teleporting" themselves to new worlds extras were made which sparked the " Freeman Incident" in which humanity stumbled on themselves trying to justify who they were as a race that constantly copied themselves.
    >> OrbitalCommand !w68jcmPgR6 11/30/10(Tue)00:51 No.12975868
    Part 4

    > The freeman incident triggered a hidden weapon that humanity used zealously, cloned soldiers. And with that paved the way to proxies; sentient beings created expressly for combat and having the rights of a "weapon".
This created a rise to cyberisation, then full on android production and combat droids.

    >With a watershed of war technology releasing and making themselves known wholesale at the behest of a Lander, humanity strikes back in the battle of EisenHower, a planetary fortress created in a moon that played a critical role in watching the Exalted's movements and amassing a clone army under their nose.

    > The year long battle at eisenhower created the Silverline, in which naval forces have amassed and created a clear outline of approach to launch a counter offensive from.

    > From here the Iron Line is established in which both forces send their forces endlessly at each other in a full on battle of force. Meanwhile all the planets still currently under human control has been turned over to war production, exorbitant moneymaking, and colonial strife among refugees now being branded as Space Pirates who long ago died saved their very lives.

They called it Betsy. Not she, It. It was too malicious for anything else. Betsy was old, almost a relic, passed from team to team to squad to squad. Many trainees had stories about the big ball, none of them happy ones. It seemed to be hell-bent on ruining the day of whoever sat inside, save the driver.

Seatbealts would malfunction at the worst of times. The gyros would destabalize after a particularily bad breakfast. Pets seemed to attract it magnetically. Betsy was old, Betsy handled like shit, and Betsy hated you. Yes, you, the driver would often say as a young man would sit down for the first time.

Shot, the driver, was just as much a constant in its time. He seemed to both hate and love the vehicle, lovingly toiling on it until late at night, then fighting with it as he drove in the day. No one could say she was not welcome, but then again, few wanted to ride the monster that was Betsy.

    Part 5

    > Returning veterans of the Iron line return and see their homeworlds corrupted with strife, greed, and abuse of power from former subordinates that stayed behind in their stead. The Battle of Irons was a 3 cycle-long show of force of veterans versus combat clones that ended in an overrun. With a veteran naval commander [stricken from memory] attaches warp drive boosters to an asteroid field and bombards several planetary fortresses with an orchestrated meteor shower.
    >> OrbitalCommand !w68jcmPgR6 11/30/10(Tue)00:52 No.12975887

    > The Veterans of Iron win. With it, negotiations and changes within the millitary have created another revolution of conscientious provisions to combat clones, fierce combat discipline, competent generals, and above all, an establishment of a fleet dubbed solely as the HLF: The Human Liberation Front. Tauted by the people as the saviors of a lost humanity.

    > Stars shift, planets turn and all of humanity awaits with bated breath as to how this wave of soldiers will fare where countless mega-millions have died before them.

Oh god I really should get back to work. Sorry if my grammar is super shit 64.

One might consider using 1d4chan for any sort of tutorial. If nothing else, it could be regularly updated as rules change, and contain all of the necessary image stat links that basically never get posted often enough.

Also, it would be nice to start gathering up information on enemy statistics and appearances somewhere and that seems a reasonable place. It is annoying as hell to see enemies on the map and not know what they are, and not at all in a "dammit, the GM is foiling me with his devilish tricks again!" kind of good way. It's just annoying.

Hey Ed, haven't written in awhile. I just went through my second clone the other day. I still have this body and one extra in storage, with any luck I'll be getting another one soon. I've heard from others that after they run out of clone extras that the original gets drafted.
A few of us have already had their originals brought in. It appears that they upload our memories and experience to the originals once they arrive. Bet it's strange to have two sets of memories, each occupying the same span of time but separate. I don't know what happens to the proxy mind that controls the clones once our bodies run out. Maybe my mind gets uploaded to some database somewhere for holding, maybe I'm just gone for good. If an original get's called in and then he earns himself another clone body, does he go to reserve and the old proxy mind get called in? In any case, I don't intend to discover it myself.
Anyway I look forward to your return messages, it's good to have contact with someone outside even if limited. I'll try to keep you off the field, even if just to preserve myself.

Well its more of a description of Ghoul then anything but hey I'm distracted by multiple things right now hahah. Might go into proper detail why fire likes Ghoul so much which would include story on why he smokes as well.

Ghoul sat as he normally does on an uneventful morning; at a table in the mess hall with a cigarette, a mug of what they're passing as coffee, and a platter of biscuits and gravy. He's a pretty big guy for a Bitank pilot, and has been told by his CO's several times that he should have been a Knight; standing at 202cm and weighing 137kg. Ghoul seems like a silent giant to those who would just glance upon him, but anyone who knows him realizes that the opposite is truth, he prefers joking around with his squad mates when they're not getting shot at by the enemy.

So, did Hawkes retain his rank-up bonus even after getting that special class?
Or is it lost with the class change?

We need clarification of action economy.

Groundpounders have one move (action), and the more standard action. Some have more than one standard action (Knight & Medic), but Snipers only have one move action OR one standard action. Reloading is an action, and I'm assuming climbing, jumping, kneeling, dropping prone, and standing up are each an action too.
What the heck is Overwatch, and what action is it?

Naval units are a bit more confusing. Are they using the same idea of Move actions and Standard actions? Or just Actions, where attacking or moving (adjust, thrust, acc/dec, stabilize) are actions?

Not sure if Knights need Sidearms, or if Medic needs some too. Can we just make new rules for Kill Point gathering? Damaging an enemy (Assist) gets percentage KP, saving an ally garners a set KP point (more than one KP) or a percentage of that ally's KP tally in that session. Killing more challenging enemies garner bonus KP, etc., etc.

    >Well, this turned out a little longer then I had thought.

The only thing Colton hated more then than being dropped was prepping for the drop pod.

It started out alright. As a clone at least he didn’t have to get the biosteel injections to stop his entire skeleton from shattering from the impact. Long needles stabbed into the marrow filled with nanites and metalli-organic compounds to honeycomb his skeleton into something that could stand the kinetic discharge of tank halting from terminal velocity. There of course were other systems in place to make the 16 gee acceleration and sudden halt more manageable, and he hated them all.

The neck shunt, to stop him from blacking out as they reached speeds that even his augmented constitution couldn’t handle, a filter jammed into his jugulars to artificially control his blood level as all his blood tried to scream its way out the top of his skull. Even after it was release upon impact and the trans-clot nanos kicked in, he’d still have a crick.

The constricting reentry carapace, a thin gossamer shell trailing fiber-optic cables that fitted over his armor and kit and would rip off once deployed, built to generate an electrokinetic field that told his body that everything was fine and in one piece as he plummeted—no, was shot—from Orbital into the field on a trajectory that, with an error in the ten thousandth place could cause him to skip, could very well send him into a spin that would paint him on insides of the droppit before centrifugal force broke the shell apart at speeds rivaling a gauss rifle.
    >> [M1]Colton !IhQ3SxYh26 11/30/10(Tue)02:24 No.12976892
    >Maybe a bit too long.

And as the technicians moved started to guide him towards the pod, carefully gathering up the carapace’s cords like a dozen imbilicals, he watched as the intransigent gravity field cycled through, a faint wavering in the air accompanied with green ‘go’ LEDS lighting up the coffin-womb in sections. The fields, besides helping against the aforementioned pasting, managed to make your inner ear learn how to jazz dance.

And as they fitted him into the pod, the hum of the thousand parts that all needed to work droning in his ear, the worst part happened. Smiling, the technicians twisted off the cap of the first bottle. Colton glared at them. They knew he hated this the most. Now, as the carapace and the intran field started handshaking, the restraints hissed to life, slowly and firmly locking him in place as if Consteel was being poured around him. The technicians lifted the first bottle of nullgel to his lips, and he drank bitterly.

The human body has over a dozen cavities: stomach, esophagus, colon, lungs, and most of the other organs. In this fantastic acceleration and deceleration, those irregularities in his mass would rupture as the tissue around tried to move in. So the egg-heads had cooked up nullgel: a smart gel that invasively and brutally filled every “hole”. It was like having bad gas, only in reverse and throughout the whole body. The first bottle poured into his mouth like jello, and upon coming into contact with his saliva, took on a life of its own.
    >> [M1]Colton !IhQ3SxYh26 11/30/10(Tue)02:25 No.12976902
    >Last one, I promise.

As it started to push its way down his throat, suppressing his gag reflex, he remembered why he hated it the most: the favor. Some one in the HR department and thought she was doing a favor when she favored nullgel cherry. A sickly sweet, artificial cherry. Like horrible cherry pie it slammed into his small intestine and kept on going. Then the first bottle was removed and the second one was tilted into place.

It took 5 and a half bottles today, Colton hadn’t managed to choke down any lunch. He glared at the technicians as the last bottle, pinkish-red goop sliding down the side, was placed on the cart. He could feel the nullgel moving around inside him, like a monstrous parasite making itself at home. It didn’t matter that it would evacuate forcefully from his body on touchdown, that it would be gone in a matter of seconds. In fact, that just mad it worse.

He wished he could swear inside his mind, but it didn’t work that way. It never did.

The pod dropped, first by artificial gravity, then by the Orbital’s magnetic scaffold, firing it like a bullet into the atmosphere. And someone had made a mistake in the hundredth thousandth place.

Hey there, been awhile since I’ve last wrote. How are you and the kids doing? Is James still trying to win over that Kennedy girl? Has Sarah been making friends in school? Please send pictures – it helps to remind a man what he’s fighting for.

Yeah, I know I’m terrible about not keeping my promise to keep in touch more often. But, you see, they promoted me to Major – Major! It was just Tactical Advisory duty, guiding the boys on the ground so they won’t die, when suddenly the higher-ups decide to make me acting CO. A few more engagements later, with Galadoria and Aggronia liberated, [CENSORED] suddenly decides to drop in and chew me up before making me a Major.

So now I’m in command of [CENSORED], flying around battling aliens, sending good men and women – clones and originals – to their deaths. Honestly, how can they trust me so much? Don’t they know that I can’t guarantee to get them all home in one piece? Don’t they know that when I deploy them, I’m afraid that I’ll make a mistake and get them all killed?

Nice to hear from you, after 3 months. Honestly, it took me 4 hours and 5 re-writes to do this. I was afraid I’d loose you too. I was afraid you’d disappear like John. It calms me a little to know that you’re no longer in the line of fire. But, do try to write more often, would you? I don’t ever want to receive that message again. I can’t blame John; you know as well as I do that there wasn’t anything going to stop him from what he did, especially with his family on the line. Just promise me you won’t do anything stupid, okay? No heroics. I don’t know how I – or the kids – would be able to bear it.

The kids are doing fine. James finally asked her out to the homecoming dance. The two look adorable together. He’s been telling me that she’s “just a friend.” Silly boy; does he really believe he can fool his mother?

Sarah’s doing well. Still a little shy, although now she seems to have a little pack of boys following her around. She’s so quiet; yet as soon as she’s with her friends, suddenly she’s – well, a commander, barking orders and keeping them in line. Maybe it’s in her genes? I don’t doubt it.

I’ve attached the pictures of the kids, as well as a recording. I know what you’re doing is hard, dangerous, and stressful. Just, play the message when you feel like you’re losing sight of what’s important, okay? We’ll be here, so just shoot us some mail.

I've spent previous years researching what The Exalted were drowning myself in the intel pools and even citing research findings from the first landers.

But what I saw in the first few months flashing about with a millitary attachment, all those cycles spent double, triple uploading myself in the memepool cannot compare to the real thing. The aliens that we've been fighting, the forces that lay ahead. The damage that they've done.

It is said that the Exalted were a god-race, irrefutable proof indicates that they have not only one but several sentient races under their thumb as servant races that they have created. It has been said that for every Exalted individual, was a race of space faring creatures that populate this sector that they have claim over. A universe, teeming with life and resources is also blooming with culture, knowledge, and above all a perfect eco system in which all have attained a balance, a role with each other be they monstrous bugs or planet sized terrors, the Exalted's attention to design, the sciences, arts and spirituality are considered one interchangeable term. We translated this as their "way" in Kyotonese it's " Kido ".

So it is no surprise that our intrusion here was registered as an act of trespass. With our very presence, the delicate ecosystem of life here is compromised, but who is actually in danger here ? The very first creatures we encountered tore through our armor easily, bursted forth from the corpses of the shredded dead, and have collected people in liquified pools of their neighbors , families, their loved ones and their own blood.

I speak of the Xenoforms of course. If evil existed in primal nature it was these beings. Insectoid in nature, the Xenoforms followed one simple program set out to them by the exalted, multiply, feed, multiply, feed, starve die.

Ever since we've entered this system the researchers have been getting these whispers in the black, ghostly psychic echoes. Now we know, everything the exalted has touched is in way or another capable of psychic communication. Combat clones and humans who have spent too long in the Iron line suffer from Ghost Terrors, in which their clones would simply awaken, berserk. These are men and women who have had the most exposure to the insect like Xenoforms.

Professors, researchers and debaters would debate if there was a grain of organized, intelligent thought among the Xenoforms. Let me tell you now that the most prestiged xeno biologist MUST have had his words bought out by the Counter Intelligence Dept. Because after seeing these bugs spring unified assaults against us with the fervor comparable to religious fanatics, I cannot for the life of me that not only do they follow intelligent and organized thought, but the entity controlling them - YES CONTROLLING THEM - does so unquestioned authority, precision and response to battle field conditions. Combined this, and their ever evolving armies of superbugs it is a wonder how our technologies are barely keeping up with their ability to produce instinctively trained predators in a matter of cycles.

What is worse is not only are they capable of physically destroying us, but with latent their psychic abilities it is possible that they already understand how to spiritually destroy us as well. Imagine if you will this little known fact, a sandroach's scythes have enough motor coordination in them to swat back a pre-war bullet from a space police custom .35. Now recall those images of Aggoria, Westex, Izlemech, the swarms leave bodies of children, women, halfeaten, mangled in parts and arrangements that would hint at a berserker with a knife. And that satellite feed that got leaked, of fed Randroaches entering a family's home as they proceded to kill the oldest and most threatening, and then moving on to tear the child apart slowly to ensure the most screams. While they are not aware that probe was watching them, I am sure that the sandroaches have an internal mechanism for sadism that drives them to fight us so relentlessly. And thus , it is no longer in the realms of nature that these beasts mangle , maim, and at times, even rape. Indeed, they have tapped on our exclusive human nature to make war, do harm, and above all, hate and premeditate hate.

Now while we target all our arguments of the Exalteds' sins through the Xenoforms I have yet to brush on their more logical race, the Makarians.

Descanding from avian genetics, the Makarians are said to be an old race dating back almost a million years of space faring culture, trade, and a penchant to migrate between worlds, giving each one a century or two to recuperate their natural resources as they fly to the next one. A bit of counter intelligence propoganda would have these avians framed as barbaric baby eaters much like the Xenoforms. This is both true and false, For the Makarians to feed themselves, they often take our dead clone soldiers, culture them into a tube, clone them even more, and then eat them. Proxies that believe in Monoism have my sympathies, because the memepool is often filling up with nightmares of people getting eaten or torn apart by birds. Other than that, they have been known to feed on other processed animals, fruits, and grain, eating us is merely an acquired taste, a menu selection.

Despite these similarities to human culture, the way they conduct war is entirely different.

Their warriors are simply tasked with the job of human repulsion, their commanders squawk and laugh everytime we threaten them for their lives. Once, a raven-like's feathers were stripped from his body during a canteen brawl this was to ensure that we couldn't identify him. The makarians simply laughed. Laughed. Their disposition towards this war is nothing but fun and business to them. Executing one of their comrades generated only laughter but a full faced threat from one of the guards made them all go quiet. They are flighty, compromising, socially irresponsible for one another and only go with the flow if it feels right ! Many of these warriors were rejected sons of merchants and pilots , they would tell of stories of how one planet had a race of indiginous Snake-Likes however, since they were incapable of psychic speech, trade, or even a simple act of prostitution, the planet was de-terraformed- and replaced with makarian breathing gas [a methane offshoot] and then as they left, nuked. It is very questionable how such a race was even capable of getting their hands on such warlike technology. It is possible that milleniums of trade allowed them these advancements, pining to benefactors and higher races. . . .

Their ability to travel far reaches of space-time is another matter of great disturbance. When they warp, they essentially dodge lightyears of travel by travelling backwards in time as they enter in transit. This leads to question a few things, how "old" is this supposedly ancient race ? And do they age at all when in transit ? It would definitely solve a lot of questions that we're all dealing with space geezers here, gone mad from years of backwards lightspeed travel.

It would also explain why they are capable of complex mathematical calculations, mastery of moving blackholes, and spontaneously appearing explosives in the hulls of our very ships. ..

I know she was a dear friend of yours, as well as an ex-lover, so my condolences go out to you. Among the remains of her home a will was found. Not too long after the Battle at Aggoria...
Edwin looked up from some papers as the 'bot entered the room, "Ah yes, you are the re-purposed 'maidbot' right?"
The maidbot turned and fixed it's unblinking gaze on him, "I have been designated as unit R-zero-zero." Edwin cleared his throat, "Right. Since I'm the closest to a technician we have at the moment, I've been asked to give you a look-over to see if everything is in working order in case you received any battle damage that was overlooked. Now if you would, please sit on the table and shut off why I perform my inspection." R00 stared at him with that unflinching gaze, Edwin growing a little uneasy as the silence dragged on before the droid finally replied, "I am not shutting myself off, any repairs can be performed while I am in Active Mode." The objection caught Edwin off-guard. He wasn't expecting his requests to be refused by a 'bot, though suddenly it hit him. This maidbot, in addition to above standard intelligence for droids of it's type, was referring to itself as 'I'. This often pointed to advance personality in robots, something Edwin didn't anticipate but which he would have to work with regardless.

    >> [S] Ghost !!lFMzOYrsgi4 11/30/10(Tue)04:37 No.12978175
"Uh well. Would you remove your clothes and sit on the table, please?" R00 looked at him in what could pass for surprise, "Excuse me?"
"I can't exactly check you for damage if you are covered up." After a moment of staring, R00 complies and takes a seat. Moving around the table, Edwin continued his examination of R00's body. Her NICE body. Synthskin over a standard droid chassis that appears to have been heavily modified, it might not have always been a maidbot. Perhaps altered by some lonely technician? Would explain the intelligence if it was originally intended for other uses. "Let's see, no apparent damage, looks like you got out without a scratch. You're good to go."
"That's all? There isn't anything else you need?"
Edwin looked from side to side, unsure, "Everything appears to be in working order. Why, is there something wrong?"
R00 smiled, "I've seen the way you look at me. You haven't checked to see of ALL parts were working. Now please remove your clothes and sit on the table, it's your turn for inspection!"

First sortie didn't go so well. It was actually a training exercise. Capture the Panties. Yea, you read that right PANTIES. Apparently they were *CENSORED*. Anyway, that didn't go so well - got pasted by a rocket, which was actually a rather interesting experience once I got uploaded into a spare body. Heard our team won though, so three cheers for us! The next few went better, even convinced some of the techs to paint up one of the Collossi in the colors of El Dora Sol!

Stil, don't think you want me dead faster so you can join in the 'fun'. I don't know how much info was released about *CENSORED*, but it was horrible. All those bodies. Them xenos are some sick sons of bitches.

Anyway, our first paycheck should have come in by the time you get this. Should be enough to cover Kara's first surgery. Send her my love. Our love. Oh and make sure to tell Ma I'm doing okay! I know she worries, even if I'm not really you. Or whatever.

    >Opening video-log 345-07/11

The video jumps around a bit until it focuses on Wolf's face. His face is gaunt and the bags under his eyes do not help one bit. His eyes shine with an inner fire , though. After clearing his throat, Wolf makes a hand-gesture which directs the view of the observer to his surroundings.
The room is spartan. It holds a field-bed and a small desk with his PDA on it. Military equipment is cluttered all over the place, some of it has been given out according to regulations, but most has been mooched from different fighting units or otherwise been acquired.

"As you can see not much has changed since last time you wrote. I was issued better gear, but enough of me. I appreciate it that you informed me that my original bit the dust. If I could I would come home and help you cope with your loss. Sadly, as we both know, that is impossible. Send my regards to his wife. I know. I know. She doesn't approve of me and finds me creepy, but still ... you know?"

Wolf has a somewhat sad expression on his face and keeps silent for a while.

"Too bad, I really wanted to meet the guy that volunteered for combat duty. There aren't that many guys of that calibre around.
Let's change the topic, shall we? I told you about that Maid-Bot, didn't I? Well, it became even more creepy. Apparently not all of the old code was purged. It's running around fucking the brains out of every guy it can catch, but that's not the weird part, heightens morale after all.
No, it seems to enjoy having sex. A Bot that enjoys things? That's not right, I tell you. It even went so far that it became overprotective of her laundry! A Bot with laundry! That's just not right! I don't have anything against Bots, but true AI? Apparently the longer they don't reset their memory the more perso..."

"...just not right, I tell you! Anyway. As I said: I was issued better gear. Not much, I'm just a clone after all, but the new rifle I got is ... I don't know how to say it. It still feels like a dream. One moment I'm blasting away with this crappy, little, dinky piece of shit and suddenly from up high comes a recommendation for exemplary behaviour and I get issued this monster."

Wolf heaves his rifle into view, moving his hands over it like a lover would move his over the body of his loved one.

"Look at this baby! Accurate over long distances! Even more power than the old one and it's shot doesn't dissipate as much! This thing has a serious punch! I even blew up one of the training-dummys on the range!"

He puts it down again and looks back at the camera.

"I wasn't the only one that got new gear, too! Hawkes, you still remember my buddy, don't you? He got a machine-gun! Hefty little weapon! He let me shoot it a bit and I have to say, I'm impressed! Its handling is okay and allows for quite a lot of lead to be put downrange before you drift off-target. Still, it isn't as accurate as my baby and really, machine-guns are made to suppress the enemy and well, bugs..."

[According to protocol 35.01-526 §1 this video-log was censored for the security of the Human Empire]

"...and that's how we rescued a bunch of civs. Was really tense for a moment, but we made it! Welp, that's all the space I have! See ya next time, Mom!"

Wolf waves at the camera and the feed breaks off, just to start again seconds later.

"To whomever is watching this without my permission: Hope to whatever may listen to you that I don't find you, because I will kill you!"

    to an extent I did

I consider the anti-armor to have, on average, one axillary target. While the demo had 1.5 extra targets on average.

    Also of note:

getting hit by mowdown is like taking 2 ap shells O_O

Mowdown is -always- better then burst, and 3 shot almost always better then aimed.

    AA might need more munition.

    Also, this is important:

-how long is a round (in seconds)
-what is the effective diameter of a hex (in feet)
    >> [E1]Aberham !vGu/RZnu3o 11/30/10(Tue)15:52 No.12983630

It was then Aberham came running around the corner of a building. “Wait! Wait!” he shouted as he ran. When he finally reached the others Aberham had to take a moment to catch his breath. “It's about damn time!” Warsaw said with a smug grin, “I thought we were going to have to leave your ass.” “Dammit Warsaw, for the last time I'm not going and nether is anyone else! TIme Frames are
Very Abstract. However, on the smallest of battles it means 6 seconds. In naval engagements this could be 1 minute a turn. But when both battle fronts combine then the events that occur are simply "relative"

For this reason, turns are measured in "Phases" and can be referred to as its own unit of time. In which PsiComm synchronizes with all able hands in battle.

And hexes will too be abstract. All that is known is that each hex will house a relative number of sized units.
3 - 6 infantry can pile into one hex [as a squad]
1 bitank, a sandroach and other vehichles belong to one hex

and things bigger than that will occupy 2-3 hexes. It will be assumed that things that reach this point in size is considerably bigger than a Truck. Units are sized to appropriately portray their effective range and movement in Lengths. [which equates to the number or hexes that unit takes up]

Cool, if that's the case I have a formula for yo

(H*M)/(S*1.47) = Unit speed in MPH

    H = hex diameter
    M = unit move stat
S = length of round in seconds

Assuming an 11 foot hex and 6 second rounds that's
3.8 mph for a unit with 3 move.

    For humans:

3 mph is a brisk walk.
    10+ is running (dashing)

"Hang in there, lads. That MG's gotta reload soon. When he does I want you mooks in a dead sprint across the street. You readin' me?"

The clones gave their squad leader an affirmative and waited for his signal. The sniper amongst them was visibly shaken, he couldn't take his eyes off a dead ranger in the lying in the open street . The clone's helmet HUD was still clearly online but it's armor was pockmarked with impacts and breaches.

"Wait for it...go! Go, go, go!"

Without a word the squad broke cover and scrambled across the street. The suppressing MG roared back to life just as the last clone reached safety. With bullets rattling down the street behind them the squad's attention shifted back to their leader.

"Way to hustle, now dust yourselves off and follow me. The alley up ahead is a blind spot in their defense, but it ain't clear. The whole fuckin thing is rigged with trip mines. Stay single file behind me and keep your eyes out for wires. I don't want to
    end up like that."

The clones followed their sergeant's finger to a legless ranger sitting in a clump halfway up the alley. The sniper swallowed hard, looked syward for a moment, then fell in behind the others. The line of clones worked it's way up the alley without ceremony. As they emerged into the street beyond their leader stopped them with a raised hand.

Did you take ammo consumption into account? Since if ammo conservation becomes a concern burst would technically be better.

That of course implies his gun has an ammo limit, which the mgR sheet makes no mention of. Or that we can't spare the 5 or so points to drop him more ammo. So it really is kind of a moot point I guess.

    =Hell of a Chance=

The Makarians are not the kind of people to take a chance, the very concept of a suicidal charge escapes them. They always fought unfairly, even with an overwhelming advantage. And by unfairly-

" I mean intelligently " Said the shark teethed Captain of the Black Flag. " Listen," hissed the pirate f, " They dont believe in acceptable losses, they dont believe in breaking even, and they especially dont believe in a warriors' code. You're better off leaving that kind of logic with their raven pilots, and I hear they're confident enough to take on a fighter squadron, and enough that I believe them. You can put them in a cockpit with nothing but a sonar and they would STILL outfly our rocket bricks."
Sparkling through the peripheral screens of the bridge is a flaming interceptor, with a turn of his gaze, the shark-toothed commander sneers and gives a firing order to one of the ship operators. Just as soon as the colision warnings start to buzz, neon green slugs could be seen thumping against the exploding interceptor. The operator reports a lost pilot. The sharktoothed commander blinks an image burned into his mind routintely. His hair was white and they clung to his head as if to form a shiny ball, but his sharp angular features and an admiral's cap with a noticeable hole on the visor over the right eye washed off any sign of nobility that this man had.

    >> OrbitalCommand !w68jcmPgR6 11/30/10(Tue)22:07 No.12986696
He looked back to the admiral who he was audience to on the main screen. The man was bristling under his bare shaven face, jaw clenched and teeth gripping back a tensed tongue waiting to lash back at the sharkeyed commander at any misstep or sign of amateurism.
" Are you quite done slandering our force's ability to win this battle -Pirate- ?"
" I answer to Captain, Admiral" The shark bites back. His voice was dry and ragged now, " And no I am not done, I want you to know that in terms of range, the Makarians have us beat by a SIGHT, Range, Technology, and Maneuverability , and even though our forces can cover the grid I am afraid they can always resort to safely teleporting out of the fight anytime they want "

"Are you IMPLYING then, that this enemy is confident enough to beat us ? Even after covering this grid ? "

    " Yes , but- "

" And even AFTER fighting these makarians for an extended line in the Iron Line, you sustain that WE of the GALACTICA FEDERAL ARE INCAPABLE OF FIGHTING THIS SIMPLE MOP UP OPERATION ? His hand drops down and the operator unceremoniously cuts off the communique. She then moves to clean her ears of the belligerent yelling.

The screen goes clear. The black of the iron line becomes visible against the shimmering stars.A cluster of white dwarves shine red from the sheer density of blood and space fuel that has dusted this region like one statistic after another.

The shark eyed commander stares out as columns of federation ships fan out and enter into the billowing sea of fire, dust, and iron blood.

His crew sat there silently. The radar operators and the communications crew looked back with necks craned upwards and behind them. Data parsed on the screen, the federal forces try their hand at an overwhelming offensive strategy, using the full weight of their numbers to charge and scatter their lines. What they got instead was a dissolving hive of hornets nitpicking and voraciously tearing away at oppurtunity targets and important command vessels. Their ships stood back and fired endlessly at the stumbling giant of a force, blinking away and flickering on their flank as cruisers got too near. A lucky potshot hear and there cracked a few makarian vessels who then promptly disappeared for a few moments and reappeared again a half hour later to eat away at the remaining forces. Only a quarter of the fleet remained, The black Flag nestled tightly in the enemy's blindspot shooting at opportunity targets and nothing else.

" Ace, LAUNCH " He shouts. His eyes were wide now, his teeth grinding again. The bridge sprang back to life as combat designations and rails were being deployed from rail chutes one after another. The enemy was swarming in all directions the remaining fleets were scatterd and disorganized, this was the perfect time to strike at them. Ships lurched and crashed into each other as they attempted escape, others were simply shot by the Admiral's flagship himself- as if to take a letter from the Commander's playbook.

The frail galactic fleet was in shock. The crimson fire glowed on each of their faces as the Black Flag penetrated unceremoniously through the heavily modified flagship.

" Listen here and listen well," Grumbled the sharkeyed commander, his voice was as soft spoken as the grinding metals clattering off his ship's hull. If you wish to win this fight, you will all do exactly as I say. Or if you are still honorbound enough to kill me and die yourself, go ahead. I hear clones that strike at their own superior officer are shut down from reintegration. So I want you to FIGHT like your lives actually matter."
The Commander sets down the tiny mic. Shouts of captains and loyalists fly through the comm lines. Operators tally up the changing flag markers of every ship cascading from green to a unanimous Black. The final count of his forces topping off at 16 ships while the Makarians enjoy a hefty flock of 5 tens.

" W- What are your orders Commander, " stammers a Federal captain's voice.

    >Is it supposed to be an average of sorts?

Expected value is determined by the likelihood of an event A ( written P(A)) weighted by the impact of the event lets say "v",

Such that Expected value = P(A)*v

For instance, there is a 30% chance that our rifleman will hit with any one 'bullet' he fires during a burst, and each success nets you one damage.

So the expected value for the one bullet is .3*1 =.3
and with 3 shots you sum them all together to get
.3*3=.9 damage, so on average the rifleman is dealing .9 damage per round, he may get more or less any given round.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 11/30/10(Tue)23:32 No.12987563

    Ah, okay then.

So it's a simple breakdown of the "expected" damage each attack/action will do? Alright, I can accept that.
    >> [E1]Aberham !vGu/RZnu3o 11/30/10(Tue)23:55 No.12987733

The Marauder (I am very poor at spelling)

has a Maximum expected damage of 14.4 (holy crap)

But only if there are 3 targets, each surrounded by 6 more targets all of which are mutually exclusive,

The -actually- maximum damage for this situation is 24, but typically we would see 14.4 damage go off instead.
    >> [TA] Sgt. Irons !kR3H6bckvs 12/01/10(Wed)00:45 No.12988133
Yeah, that's basically how it works when done simply. Factors like range, speed, ammunition, and number of attacks are also kind of important when determining overall unit effectiveness, though.

As one example, certain heavy units discount the first point(s) of damage from any attack that hits them, so the expected damage of any class relying on multiple low-value attacks falls significantly- often to zero. You can apply the same formula for expected damage against that unit just by subtracting the appropriate value from everything's damage, obviously, but that doesn't let you effectively account for having a mix of enemies on the field- because conversely, you want large numbers of attacks above everything else when facing swarms. Or area attacks.

Still, you can use this kind of information to do some handy things. If we can get enemy statistics, we can find optimal- or at least excellent- loadouts for facing almost anything by throwing math at it. Even if we're just making assumptions, we can come up with some useful information.

Example: Let's say we've got six of those bug enemies charging a single soldier and two attached drones on an infinite plain of open ground, starting twenty hexes away. Which infantry class is best equipped to deal with it?
    >> [TA] Sgt. Irons !kR3H6bckvs 12/01/10(Wed)00:46 No.12988139
We know that the bugs have move 5 and one hit point from observing them. I could probably dig up their attacks and damage, but I'll assume one strike at 1.5 since I can't really recall- it might be 2. We don't know their odds of hitting, but my guess would be about 7, comparable to our melee types.

Anti-armor: Can retreat while firing to use all 4 available shots and has unlimited range, so only hits matter. Assuming the enemies are clustered and do not dodge rockets, each of the 12 fired shots will kill 0.9 bugs- easy math, all the bugs die. The numbers fall to 0.5 per shot if the bugs' formation is sparse, which is cutting it close- a bad run of luck and the squad gets chomped.

Rifleman: Max range of 11 with overwatch single shot, so they'll adjust so that the bugs enter max range at a round end and then wait. First round of firing kills 0.3 bugs, and they fall back. Second round is at range 9 with no more overwatch, kills 0.6 bugs. Third round is range 7, allowing autofire- but that will only kill 0.9, while single shot kills 1.5. Fourth round range 5, autofire kills 2.7 or single shot kills 1.8, so it's autofire time. Fifth round is range 3 and does the same as last, which brings expected kills to 7.8. We can be pretty sure that as long as they can continually fall back while firing, one rifleman with two drones will kill six bugs before they reach melee with him.

Mobile Demolitions: Maximum range is 7, and can fall back while firing so that the bugs close at 1 hex per round. Assuming clustered bugs, that secondary explosions take no range penalties, and that misses do nothing, that's expected damage of 0.48, 0.96, 1.44, 1.92, reload, 1.92, 1.92 at which point we can be pretty sure that the enemies are dead. Really high variance with these assumptions, and it will take a lot of running and most of their ammo. Against bugs in a loose formation, the numbers are far worse- they run out of ammo and get chomped.
    >> [TA] Sgt. Irons !kR3H6bckvs 12/01/10(Wed)00:47 No.12988145
Sniper: Maximum range of 17 with overwatch, so they engage right off. They can't retreat while firing like most other classes, so they have three shots each before melee. Kill 0.9, 1.8, 2.1, then take 0.84 hits from the remaining 1.2 and kill 1.512 of them with the last shot. The snipers can win, and without using cheap retreating tricks, but are likely to take casualties and a little bad luck could easily spell their doom.

Knights want to engage in melee, obviously. Assuming they maneuver so that they get the first hit, they can attack and kill 4.2 enemies on the first round with an all-out attack, or 2.1 when using shields. 1.8 remaining bugs hit back for 1.26 hits, which either wounds or incapacitates at least one knight depending upon damage. 3.9 would hit back for 1.95 hits, getting two. Berserker-style knights then hit back for 2.436 damage and finish off their opponents, while shield-user knights hit for 0.735 damage, still have half their opponents left, and get chomped the next round. Conclusion: The knights are likely to lose at least one, and will lose if they use their shields.

Kind of a pointless exercise, but interesting stuff nevertheless.

    > Bitter clone.

A bitter wind escapes from the westward bank's newly extruded plascrete maze of towers. A lone clone soldier stands by at the eastern bank of the canal, huddling to himself for warmth. That breeze did not help either.

The clone soldier stamps his booted feet, trying to bring back the feeling to his toes. There weren't any other soldiers in the vicinity. The nearest patrol is half a mile from the canal's frozen banks. Supposedly.

They just aren't expecting to see any invasions in this side of the world. There is nothing here. Just a newly constructed mining compound, refinery, foundry, and a hive to support the whole process.

Hardly a soul between the construction droids and a handful of clone soldiers put to guard duty like an afterthought.

His clone brethren managed to get a spot at the decisive battle with the fowl Makarians. Him? Nothing but guard duties. There was only that one time insertion against the roaches, and then that virtual training at Blacksad. Then he was shipped off to this pitiful frozen wasteland of a planetoid.

With quick motion, the clone soldier raises his rifle, aims, and fires. One smooth motion. The beaked head of the Makarian vanishes in a puff of yellowish vapor.

Right. Not a Mak, just one of the puny-looking avian-type critter that has been approved to be safe for eating. The clone soldier thumbs his transmitter and speaks into the receiver.

"-fowl for dinner, over." "Great job. The paste's getting boring. Again. Try bagging a couple more, if you spot any. Over." "-ten-four, over."

Tying the four-legged (four drumsticks!) headless fowl unto his belt, the clone soldier continues his survey of the frozen canal. He might be in luck. There are two more of the fowl, running around at the embankment.

What kind of luck is that?

    >Might not be my best, but meh. I don't want to study.

    >During the battle of Azimuth

The initial predictions were correct. Thanks to the high gravity of the moon, the Makarians weren’t able to utilize their famed warping technology. For a species famed for fighting on their terms, jumping into a fight with an opponent waiting for them seemed out of character.

Then again, it seemed as if they brought their whole flock with them, just to spite them. Oh yes, Bravo and Sword of Damocles deployed in full force, with Bravo on the moon ready to fill the space above them with flak fire, and Damocles ready to fight the Maks on their terms. With an array capable of firing into orbit, the land fortress deployed on Azimuth, and two cruisers led by Admiral Weird, Major Walker was confident that the plan would work.

It did, and didn’t. The mighty land fortress fired right away on the Makarian fleet, grabbing their attention. It seemed like things would go according to plan, even with the Makarians deploying on the surface of the moon. “Good, let them come,” Walker had thought. They would be fighting on his terms, not theirs.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/01/10(Wed)01:50 No.12988679

Suddenly, things went to hell, fast. The array missed the Makarian mothership; the Makarians now knew what they had up their sleeves. A cruiser was not only destroyed, but consumed by a black hole fortress. Sure, the second shot from the array hit and grounded the Makarian mother ship on the moon’s surface, after firing through said moon to get hit the ship. Up till that point, Walker was still confident in their victory, as the ground forces the Makarians already deployed – including a black hole fortress – were wiped out.

What came next surpassed his expectations.

Next thing he know, Makarian forces were surrounding the land fortress. While his men could kill efficiently, there were simply too many; even with the buster cannon firing on the horde of bird-like xeno. He could hear over the comm. system his soldiers dying while facing the superior numbers of the Makarians.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/01/10(Wed)01:50 No.12988682

What could he do to reverse the situation? Sure, there were still friendly naval forces, and reinforcements inbound… but would they make it in time? Walker took a drag from his cigar, in thought. Would this be how it ended, at the hands of some space chicken?

No, he thought, his resolve burning bright with a grin spread across his face. He would show his men no weakness, no willingness to back down from a fight. He had been waiting for this chance – to pay the Makarians back. If they wanted to increase their debt, who was he to argue with them?

“McMillan! Power up the engines! Let’s get this bucket moving!”

    “Sir, yes sir!”

“Lain! Fire those cannons! I want those birds pulverized and swimming in their own blood!”

    “With pleasure, sir!”

He felt the vehicle – or rather, mobile building – lurch forward, as it began moving toward the downed ship and a horde of angry Makarians. He felt it reverberate as each cannon sent explosive rounds hurtling towards the Makarians.

He would show them why they shouldn’t have attacked them to begin with. Why it was a mistake. Why they would all die and suffer terribly for it. For he was Major Walker, the ground commander of Bravo Force, a man who felt most at home with dirt under his feet. And he was commanding a land fortress.

    >Factors like range, speed, ammunition, and number of attacks are also kind of important when determining overall unit effectiveness, though.

Absolutely, as you demonstrated in your example using the expected damage value as the -only- factor for 'real' tactical situations will be very unreliable.

I only wanted to demonstrate the various damage outputs to better inform Bravo and Command.

That and I'm not a writer, so I figured I needed to contribute in some capacity :)...Perhaps I'll try a story later, If anyone is honestly interested in what kind of man Aberham is.

As the armor goes, the numbers seem a bit more wonky then the infantry units, with the main gun on a hover-tank being out-classed by a sniper, an a strider being several times more powerful (more powerful then even a bitank). Then again, this is effectively an RPG not a wargame, so these discrepancy might be irrelevant.

However I would like to have an option to sacrifice -all- your actions to gain an extra move, and some adjustments to the medic (I'm a greedy bastard)

In the last engagement, most my time was spent repositioning, and without a long range weapon or knights requiring assistance I managed only one successful pull+heal (given it almost certainly saved a life), I might need to see more engagements with a solid infantry presence, but having something else to do, even is a support role would be welcome.

    Post Cloning Belief Systems.

After the Freeman Incident came the vicious debates of what to do afterwards. The philosophical, and ethical talks that came into light as well as religion paved the way for what will be soon known as the Freeman acts, a set of red tape provisions that the millitary follows strictly depending on what you as an individual believes in - before they go ahead and start harvesting your cells at birth under the provision Warbucks draft.

With clones of an individual came the belief systems that followed, about their treatment:

Zeroism: A belief that denies the importance of one's individuality as a clone or as an original, and that life should be unitarily treated the same, and that the individual is only described by the sum of their actions and the differences that they have made up until death. Those who believe in Zeroism has very little inhibitions, regarding their fear of death and maintain a cool calm in the battlefield. They also have no reservations against being cloned countless times.

Monoism: A belief that the validity of life be carried solely by that single individual and that individual only. Originals with Monoism tend to arrest their original bodies to cold sleep as their combat clone is activated. While many clones of a monoist can exist, only one can be active at a time. The prescription of this belief has allowed some individuals to retain a better mental health on the field, and carry a stronger presence. Extreme Monoists do not clone at all.
    >> MOnday !w68jcmPgR6 12/01/10(Wed)11:43 No.12991585
Polyism: States that the individual and his ideas are only truly valid once his progeny of proxies have multiplied their strong sense of selves and each work individually towards a common goal. Polyism asserts that an original and his clones be treated as brothers on a single table, each one an individual but each one a part of a larger whole. Units that believe in Polyism have a better understanding of others, and are naturally better team players.

Dualism: A strange belief system that asserts that whatever clone spawns from the original be as genetically inverse as possible. This normally results in a gender inverse of that clone with a different personality and a different set of thoughts. Dualism states that the path to a perfect being will then come from the harmony of the two. While this doesn't imply romantic relations, the third clone that will result after their deaths will be a combined being that retain their memories. Thirds are considered very unstable elements in the millitary, as they are either very effective , or very... twisted

    >> weird 12/01/10(Wed)12:35 No.12991843
Hmm, thought Weirds were Polyist, but apparently they are more of a Zeroist. Though the fear of no death is mitigated by the limited number of clones, in truth.
    >> [S1] Ghost !!lFMzOYrsgi4 12/01/10(Wed)13:16 No.12992063

I guess Ghost would be a Zeroist. He has no problem with being cloned a bazillion times since there is just one consciousness that is uploaded into a new clone body when the one it inhabits dies (at least I think that's how it works. The mind is uploaded to one of the TA bodies and then put into the next clone right?). Although I do agree that the limit of clone body back ups messes with the 'little fear of death' thing.

    “Pleasure planets…”
A pat on the shoulder. “Don’t look so glum. Someone should have the fun, and her service left us with this.” A gesture towards the pod.
“I know. This all just seems too fast.”
A bark of laughter. “Too fast? We’re at war with almost every species we know, and more importantly we’re starting to lose the edge.”
    “I know.”
“And we have golden opportunity here. One handed to us. Do you believe in providence?”
    “I believe in the Landers.”
“A Landerite? Well, then maybe this was there doing. It doesn’t matter.”
A hand brushes along the cryo’s window. “The chances were impossible that we’d ever come up with this ourselves, and yet in a way we did.”
“The preened DNA of some Diva on a brothelrock, hitting the genome augments of the knight class?”
    “Why was she chosen Knight?”
A toothy grin. “She wanted one of each.”

    A shrug. “She’s just a proxy.”

    About PsiCommand:

At the back of everyone's memechips is a thought accelerator that uploads a ghost of the combat clone into a more accelerated data exchange environment. This environment is called Psychic Command or Psicommand for short. Psi command in its simplest incarnation is a communication channel open to a group of combatants. Communication and idea exchange occurs at the speed of a thought. Though, due to limitations in hardware and wetware, and average combat clone can only sustain 15-20 minute sessions a phase. Normally, the bigger Psicomm gets, the longer the sessions seem to be. Commanders and TA, are equipped with enchanced software so as to be able to comprehend combat situations faster, more effeciently and at a bigger scale.

    tldr; Psicomm is 4chan.

The automatic doors slid open with a hiss, and from them came Lieutenant Gabriel McMillan, accompanied by the shouts of the Major.

As the young officer stepped across the threshold from the command center, the automatic doors slid and closed, cutting the corridor from the Major’s rant.

“You’d think he’d go hoarse by now,” said Private Wyllie, one of the two sentries posted at the door to the command center.

“Well, you obviously haven’t actually stood in the center then,” replied Private Renault, the other sentry. “Right, sir?”

“So true, Private. If the man isn’t yelling, he’s either talking really loud or screaming at me; if he’s not doing that, he’s either smoking or sitting there with his hands folded at his mouth and staring at the screen.” McMillan rubbed his ears, eliciting a chuckle from the two guards. “I mean, seriously, the man’s a lunatic.”

“Would you rather he hadn’t, then? I mean, if it wasn’t for him, we all would probably be on the Iron Line right now.”

“All right boys, do I have to remind you two that you’re in the presence of a superior officer?”

“Sir, no sir!” the Privates cried in unison. McMillan laughed silently to himself. These two were probably highly in tune with one another, likely due to the nature of their stations.

“Right then. Keep up the good work, gentlemen. From what the Major was saying earlier, it looks like he and Sergeant Hartford might be cooking up a surprise for the rest of us later.”

“I hope you don’t literally mean…” Renault trailed off.

“Maybe.” McMillan then proceeded down the corridor, with the two Privates saluting his back. As he turned the corner, he heard them continuing their back-and-forth play.

    “You don’t really think…?”

“I don’t know, the Major is crazy.”

    “Not this again Renault.”

    “He is! Did you ever…”

The conversation faded as McMillan continued walking down the corridors. He admitted, that while the Major did indeed behave like a madman at times, it sometimes felt – well, forced. Was it plausible for Major Walker to simply be putting on a front for the purpose of morale?

McMillan thought deeply on the idea as he stepped into the elevator. A press of a button, a slight lurch, and a pair of sliding doors later, McMillan stepped from the elevator, lost in thought with a hand on his chin.

So deeply was he contemplating the matter that he didn’t notice the female droid standing off to the left of the elevator entrance.

“Lieutenant McMillan” a soft, silky voice called out.

McMillan swung around to find R00 standing in the transit room. He hadn’t seen the droid up close before – he read the reports and knew what she looked like from the reports and the holo-screen, but this was the first time he actually interacted with her.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/02/10(Thu)02:14 No.12999375

“Yes, R00?” he responded while quickly looking her up and down. She looked just like a human, save for the lines across her synthetic skin and her rather blank stare. Long, white, silky hair coupled with her strange pale eyes, R00 seemed rather out of place. Especially while wearing that maid uniform. McMillan had no idea where she got it; he could have sworn she wasn’t wearing it when they found her. Could be the reason Walker felt uncomfortable around it, he reasoned.

“… Lieutenant, were you ‘checking me out?’”

Shit, she caught him oogling her. “What? No, I was just –“

R00 giggled. “That’s okay, Lieutenant. As I was saying, you are probably very stressed from working with Master Walker for so long.”

“What? Oh, no, it’s nothing, really-“

“But it IS, Lieutenant. Stress can have a negative impact on one’s judgment and reaction time, which are crucial to one’s livelihood and performance on the battlefield.”

McMillan backed up slightly. “Oh, there’s no need to worry, I’m not on the battlefield, I serve in the –“

“Command center, where it’s just as, if not more, important to be stress free and able to think clearly, especially since you’re Master Walker’s adjutant.” R00 stated, her eyes seeming to get wider, as she moved closer to McMillan.

McMillan backed up further, into the wall. Suddenly he understood why Major Walker felt uncomfortable around the droid.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/02/10(Thu)02:15 No.12999381

“Even if that’s true, I have ways to dea-“

“But it is my duty, Lieutenant, to serve Bravo,” R00 said, moving closer and pressing herself up against McMillan. “In many ways,” she said softly, moving her mouth to his ear. “Including, stress management.”

Before McMillan could protest further, R00 moved back, grabbed him by the wrists, and pulled him into the room they had been standing right outside of. Thrown onto his back on something soft, McMillan looked up to see R00’s silhouette against the light of the open door, her eyes glowing, and giggling softly as she slowly walked forward. As the door shut closed behind her, all he could see in the darkness was R00’s glowing eyes drawing closer, accompanied by her flirting giggles.

The following day, McMillan found himself once again in the command room.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/02/10(Thu)02:15 No.12999386

“McMillan?” McMillan’s hair stood on edge. The Major knew, and was going to chew him out, he thought to himself. Breaking into a sweat, he envisioned how Walker would, in front of the rest of the command crew, begin to yell at McMillan for improper conduct or for fraternizing with soldiers under his command, shaming him publicly.

He swallowed nervously. If he tried to explain himself, he would probably just make the situation worse. The only thing he could do was face the Major head on.

“Yes, sir?” his words stumbled out of his mouth.

McMillan braced himself. Most of the command crew who were paying attention did as well.

However, Walker just sat there, staring at McMillan, for a good minute. For one long, agonizing minute, McMillan felt Walker’s eyes burning holes in him, scrutinizing him, reading him like a book, making him feel insignificant.

“… Never mind, Lieutenant,” Walker said, returning his attention to the screen. As McMillan simply stood there confused, a huge grin spread across Walker’s face.

Also, I am unsure how would the ladies in Bravo team react to R00's presence, and the rumors of her attac- Uh, 'aiding' the male troops in stress management.

Also in a more realistic consequences, wouldn't this kind of aberrant behaviour in a droid result in it being drawn back for data-probing or even scrapping? If it were human/clone behaviour, it'd sound downright sociopathic.

Or, as twist, R00 actually only offered very good massages. Very, very, VERY GOOD massages. Fainting from the extreme muscle-relaxing pleasures are the typical end result. Other emissions... Also happen on occasions.

Additionally, if you look at the "orders" Walker gave to Ghoul and R00 in the aftermath of Blacksad, it might shed some light on the situation... maybe.

A little longer after the battle at Aggoria than last time...

Edwin entered the room. "Ah, there you are R00. Just the ladybot I was looking for!" R00 looked up from the terminal she had been working at, "Hello Ghost. You are here to help me with that thing I asked about?"
"Of course, let's get started shall we?"

"I am finished, you can get up now!" R00 rose from the table, looking at a nearby mirror. Holding a small object in his hand, he turned to R00 "Don't worry, you can't even see it." Walking to the door, he stopped a second turned to R00 again, a mischevious grin on his face, "R00... let's just keep this our little secret?" R00 shot him a confused look, then nodded. "Alright, though I don see why." Edwin chuckled and began whispering into her ear. Strangely, even R00 cracked a smile.

The droid storage bay was silent, little reason for anyone to be there when not retrieving the droids for combat operations. The bay door slid open, and in stepped a figure carrying a toolbox and a small object. Appraising the droids within, he finally settled on a knight droid that must have been witness to many horrors of battle. Moving swiftly and diligently, he removed a small covering on the back of it's head and withdrew a chip. Taking the object he brought, he finished the exchange. The droid wasn't equiped with it's armor or weapons but it would serve it's purpose. Though those glowing eyes had bore witness to the many horrors of battle, it would soon bear fresh terrors...

Thrown onto his back on something soft, McMillan looked up to see R00’s silhouette against the light of the open door, her eyes glowing, and giggling softly as she slowly walked forward. Was it a trick of the light, or did R00 look alittle bulkier then just a moment ago? As the door shut closed behind her, all he could see in the darkness was R00’s glowing eyes drawing closer, accompanied by her flirting giggles.

    >Sorry! This took me a really long time to write, and is really long. I hope it's not boring.

Lost never minded cryo. She had had her training on Boreal Prime, a planet where the 25 years of winter where only countered by a frantic summer of six months. The demanding training, the rigorous treatments and augmentations, were usual done in demanding climates that pushed an already hale clone. But she had loved it: the snow, the ice, crisp way the air tasted. How the cold brought people together, for warmth as much as for company. The way the world was silent and peaceful. Cryo was just as quiet and tranquil.

Scientifically it was impossible to dream in cryo. The purpose of the pods was to suspend animation of the entire body. Thought—neurons firing and chemicals reacting—was something that had to be arrested as much as any other part of the body for cryo to work. But some, many, spoke of dreams during their sleep and many had a sense of time passing when they were revived. Many chalked this up to the subconscious reacting to the knowledge of the revival and simply giving false impressions of dreams. But others, religious or merely open-minded, wondered: if there was such a thing as a soul, could it be frozen?

Lost had never heard any of these debates, and likely wouldn’t have cared. And yet, she did more then sleep. A part of her awoke. That part melted, growing wider and taller then her body, slipping outside the frozen shell and reaching tentatively out into the ship. The nearby cryo pods did not interest her, and she slipped further out till she found someone awake.

The man was, of course, a clone. A lowly technician whose job it was to monitor levels in the cryobay. Not that there wasn’t a hundred systems in place, but the military always did like eyes-on. Suddenly a fancy took him and he broke protocol to move down the lines to a certain pod. A certain pod with a window.
    >> [K] Lost !Ykpfge10hU 12/02/10(Thu)04:17 No.13000206
Lost, the part of Lost that was “awake,” couldn’t of course control him. But that need that was true for all humans, the reason they were social creatures, had brought him here, albeit unconsciously. Companionship was a strong lure, and strangely he felt it here, staring at the frozen girl. The wrath that was Lost could not step into this man’s mind and see herself, but rolling off of him in waves was a sweet melody, thousand songs, that made up this man’s brainwaves.

She saw herself as told by a stranger, while a song about her played in the background and the walls were paintings of her depicted by abstract artists. Her face, normally pretty-bordering on beautiful, was enhanced by lust and personal preference. Like many men, this one found her flaws—a slightly long forehead, and average, almost thin lips—making her all the more appealing. Her body, strengthened from the first stages of cloning to genome treatments and injects, was athletic, but due to modern science and masculine aesthetics, still pleasantly curved if very well toned. The painful heightening treatments, required for knights, gave her already long legs a few more inches in height and a long lean stomach, quartered by abs. But all of that was distorted and wound in fantasy and remembrance of the man; comparing her to pornographic holos and past lovers and the important females in his life.

Soon the man lost interest and stared around before checking over his diagnostics. He didn’t remember why he came over here, but incase management was watching, he might as well cover his ass. After making a note on his datapad, he mentally noted the woman’s name, Lya [GHOST] Tseretin, and that she looked to be about his age, 21. Maybe, he thought as he moved back to the last pod he had been looking at, he’d catch her when they thawed her out.
    >> [K] Lost !Ykpfge10hU 12/02/10(Thu)04:18 No.13000211
The entity that was more subconscious, but all thought, floated back and settled over her body, looking in. Her mind, all the thoughts frozen, perfectly still and intricate, made herself sad, as far as the now distant emotions went. She could see the jagged line in her mind, separating what the cloning had left her, from her own memories.

When Lady Interest of Prima Masquerade decided to give her template as a clone for wartime use as a publicity stunt, the lawyers had had some terms of agreements. Specifically that Lady Interest’s mind was intellectual property, and would not be replicated fully. Instead she would get the first 12 years of her life, and technicians would have to make due with that. What was left when the technicians were done was sharp edges to the normally soft edges of memories, a butchering, only clear to the entity, of memories and thoughts. Her outward mentally sighed. It was for the best.

The next seven years, given with accelerated simulations, had done much to educate her, not only on military concerns, but a standard education of math, philosophy, science, and history. Not to say that she had done much better then an average 12-year-old. But those memories, and the year in boot camp, were her own, and had produced something much different from the pleasure planets pop star: an intelligent and fiercely loyal woman, with the need for friendship and company much more then her original’s need for adoration.

Satisfied with what it saw, the part of Lost that had left out settled back into her self and after struggling to get comfortable, drifted back to sleep.

    >Okay! Sorry again for the length. I'd love to read comments, but I have to get to sleep. Hopefully I'll see you all tomorrow!

    It’s been a while hasn’t it?

I’m sorry for not writing before, but we’ve been on the border worlds, and not a lot of communication is possible there. I saw my first combat some… actually I’m not sure of the days exactly. A couple weeks at best. You sleep and eat when you can, and are generally too busy for time keeping.

But that first battle was mighty scary, let me tell you. I’m sure I’ll never hear the end of it from you all, but I’ll admit it: I soiled myself. It’s hard not to against those xenoforms (Which is a terrible name for them, they look like humongous bugs). But when those things came streaming up the hill, their screeches and hisses filling the air, claws like you wouldn’t believe, moving faster than a man can run and absorbing our fire towards them like it was nothing and there was an airstrike on them but they just kept GOING and then I realized they were coming straight for me and that is was MY job to face them and stop them and all I had was my armor and my shield to protect me and…

Sorry, it’s hard to put into words. Suffice to say it is nothing like what you read in books.
    >> [K] Cpl. Blinky !7ZaptAU4u2 12/02/10(Thu)04:28 No.13000257

But I had some good soldiers fighting alongside me. A fellow Knight, Graves, told me to keep my shield up and hold my ground. I didn’t see what was so great about holding this spot against all those bugs – it was just a bunch of abandoned buildings not worth much to anyone – until I glanced behind me.

There was a motto of the camp I trained.
    “Shield in hand, we hold.”
The meaning to me seemed obvious at the time, to hold the Iron Line and keep humanity safe. But really it’s simpler, smaller than that.

Behind me were the units of Bravo, all of them fighting for their lives.

It wasn’t my job to stop the bugs alone, I wasn’t alone at all. But it was my job to stand firm. To be that Iron Line protecting all those behind me.

I don’t know if I’ll ever live up to the essence of being a Knight, but I like to think that every day I get a little bit closer.

Working on Karnivore in the hanger bay, Ghoul used any excuse he could to stay out of cryo as long as possible. The big man was one of few orginals currently in Bravo, and always complained about nightmares while he was stuck in cryo.
On this particular evening Ghoul had fallen asleep in Karnivore's cockpit when he was woken up by a clang. He silently peered out from his tank looking around only to see a clone standing near a Colossus and a lithe figure in the shadows moving toward him.
"What the hell..." he spoke silently to himself as he leaned forward trying to get a better view. After a few moments and catching a few tidbits of what was said between the clone and the lithe figure that was apparently R00. Ghoul was wondering what R00 was us to, until she pounced the clone. Ghoul leaped out of his Bitank, intent on helping the poor guy from whatever the crazed bot had planned until he realized what exactly she was doing to the clone. After a few moments of quiet chuckling to himself Ghoul decided to leave them alone and snuck around a few of the other vehicles in the hanger out the exit to see if there was any deep fried mak left from the interrogations earlier.

    >> [E2] Dr. Warsaw !cCsMsaA4k2 12/02/10(Thu)15:31 No.13004707
Yeah so in the event of Warsaw's death I've preemptively thought up another character. And then I wrote this.

    >song is sung to the tune of 'Johnny comes marching home' or 'The ant's go marching' since it's the same tune.

With the horrid sound of frying bacon the xenoforms burst forth from the ground and made a mad dash for the line of clone soldiers waiting for them. The line of knights readied their shields for the onslaught. Several of the newer recruits glanced nervously from one bug to the next, the fear tickling at the back of their minds. Armstrong, a large man even by the standards of a Knight, began to pound a steady beat on his shield. Surprised at first the other knights didn't know weather to stare at the large man or the bugs drawing ever closer. Slowly the other knights began to join in, their fear washed away by the din of the shields. Then, in a deep baritone, Armstrong began to sing.

“The clones go marching one by one, Hurrah! Hurrah!
They bring the monsters to their death, Hurrah! Hurrah!”
The bugs will burn and the birds will fry
The Exalted they will all soon die
As the clones go marching on, and on, and on”
    >> [E2] Dr. Warsaw !cCsMsaA4k2 12/02/10(Thu)15:32 No.13004709
The knights ceased pounding on their shields as the bugs drew close. The sound replaced almost immediately by the cacophonous sounds of close combat. Even as he fought, however, Armstrong continued to sing. His voice rising above the sounds of battle to stave off the fear for just a little longer.

“The Clones go marching two by two, Hurrah! Hurrah!
Soon you'll get to be one too, Hurrah! Hurrah!
You will die false death, like all the rest
But rise to fight at dawns first light
As the clones go marching on, and on, and on”

As before the knights joined their voices to Armstrong's one at time. Each new voice lending strength not only to the song, but to those around them as well. Swords struck truer and shields held firmer, all the while they continued to sing.

“The clones go marching three by three, Hurrah! Hurrah!
They will fight until their victory, Hurrah! Hurrah!
They feel no pain nor fear of death
They will fight until their final breath
As the clones go marching on, and on, and on”

Even as comrades fell beside them, the knights continued to fight. Holding their ground as the unending wave of bugs tried to wash over them. They pushed themselves passed exhaustion as they struck out just one more time with they're swords, blocked just one more strike with they're shields. The song continued with out waver.

The clones go marching four by four, Hurrah! HURRAH!
They will march into the gates of hell, Hurrah! HURRAH!
Through valleys black and fires wrath
They will continue to cut their path
As the clones go marching on, and on, and on, AND ON, HURRAH! HURRAH! HURRAH!!

The knights repeated the finally hurrah again, and again. Each time advancing a single step. Until at last they stood at the entrance tunnels to the bug's layer, where the bugs could do nothing, but fall upon their swords.

    Yay, people like it!

Anyone know of any other goods songs he could sing? I have this horrible idea that Armstrong wanted to be/was an opera singer. Then bugs ate his family. He's sad.
    >> [K] Lost !Ykpfge10hU 12/02/10(Thu)20:26 No.13007798
Wait, do the bugs make the bacon sound when they die, or is it just the sound they make when they move in?

Also, nice song. I think you should rewrite Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On as My Clone Will Go On.

They make the sound of bacon frying when they're digging through the ground and generally gnashing their teeth.

The coin was termed when geo sonars obsessively kept track of their movements .

Yay, knight pin-ups! Oh, the one on the left has axes, is he the Berserker the weird was talking about?

Poor guys. Of course they at least got only monitor the movements. I'm sure from that picture we all know who is first into the tunnels.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/10(Thu)20:49 No.13008022

From the loooks of it , they get bigger armor, which will equate to higher health and dual axes and instead of sword and board which will likely make them fully offensive melee loadouts.

Ohohohohoh maaannn I cannot wait to see them in action.

Poor Anon, but in this threat the odd one out is Anon. Everyone's got a trip.

I don't think Lost would be a good bezerker. But who knows what will happen after she comes in contact with with bugs, or other psionic races.

I can't wait to see the next sniper classes. Just 1 kill away! I'm hoping for something cloak-y. Maybe either extra long-range sniping or a backstabbing assassin type...
    >> [K] Lost !Ykpfge10hU 12/02/10(Thu)21:01 No.13008139

Do the kills you get with arty and stuff when you're TA or in a vehicle count towards you base class?
    >> [K] Nomad !Nh6I4Axmc2 12/02/10(Thu)21:10 No.13008216
I do believe it's only personal/drone kills. Vehicle/Armor users need more kills to get an upgrade.
    >> [S] Ghost !!lFMzOYrsgi4 12/02/10(Thu)21:14 No.13008251
Not really sure. I thought they did, but I haven't really paid too much attention to others kill counts with vehicles vs their kills on foot.
    >> [E2] Dr. Warsaw !cCsMsaA4k2 12/02/10(Thu)21:23 No.13008325

TA's don't get kills. Most people don't TA for long anyway, so that doesn't really matter. Vehicle kills only count for upgrading the vehicle and as Nomad said it takes more kills for a vehicle to rank up. I don't know how many people actually keep track of weather a kill was on foot or in a vehicle though.

Oh and some actions that aren't actually listed anywhere!

Run- Sacrifice all actions to double movement speed
Overwatch- Declared during the action phase. Allows a character to attack an enemy that moves into range during the enemy movement phase. Rolls for this are made by Orbital.

    Did I forget any?
    >> [M]Colton !aazgJpznxQ 12/02/10(Thu)21:26 No.13008339

Yep. Some that haven't even been used yet. Aren't I helpful?
    >> [S] Ghost !!lFMzOYrsgi4 12/02/10(Thu)21:30 No.13008368

So that's what Overwatch does. Nifty.
So I have 7 kills on foot and 2 in armor. Three kills isn't too bad, I just need to deploy in the right place.
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/02/10(Thu)21:44 No.13008486

Just to note, kills in a vehicle, from my understanding, count towards rank-ups. However, they are separate from kills as infantry/naval units. So you can get a rank as a ground-pounder, and a rank in vehicles. But the counts don't contribute towards one another. And I'm assuming you can't use an upgrade from ranking up as infantry for a vehicle/naval unit.

Think of it as different advancement trees, although rank seems cumulative. Maybe. We haven't had to deal with that problem yet. And usually, naval characters are considered different from the guys on the ground.
    >> [K] Nomad !Nh6I4Axmc2 12/02/10(Thu)21:47 No.13008507
So what about someone like myself whose done a run in Infantry, Armor, AND Naval?
    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/02/10(Thu)21:50 No.13008534

Is your naval character different from your ground one?

Just, count each kill count separately, and I'll ask OC about it.
    >> [mgR]Cpl.Hawkes !ngK3R2pIcU 12/02/10(Thu)21:50 No.13008541

    >> [E1]Aberham !vGu/RZnu3o 12/02/10(Thu)21:50 No.13008543

I would say the best bet is to just record them separately.
    >> [S] Ghost !!lFMzOYrsgi4 12/02/10(Thu)21:55 No.13008591
This thread has lasted a good long time, but it isn't showing on the main page anymore. Were we going to have a general recruitment thread before tonight's game?
    >> [K] Nomad !Nh6I4Axmc2 12/02/10(Thu)21:56 No.13008598
Due to clerical error, Nomad was forced through Infantry, Vehicle, and Naval training. Never has he had to learn so much. He is thankful for his fairly empty clone brain.

So yea, since the only kills I think I got that counts was in a Pred, I currently have two air kills, though I'm not actually sure how many Maks I took out when I made my gun runs near the mothership.

    >> [CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/02/10(Thu)21:58 No.13008623

    >Actually, you are supposed to be a Corporal now. You know, you can still get ranks while in armor/ships. Just don't expect an upgrade towards infantry from that rank, since you've already upgraded that tank of yours. Of course, if OC says anything, it overrides anything I say.
