All you can see is bright whiteness, stretching on and on without end. You feel as if you're floating through the air, with a pressure surrounding your body as if you were entirely underwater, for what seems like hours. Then you hear a voice.

    >You have arrived in the world of empty spaces, Neal Wade.
    >Why not?
    >Got anything planned?
    "Well, no..."
    >Good. Cause you're dead.
    >> Happy GM !!GKvElBvNwF/ 09/18/10(Sat)02:20 No.12131742
    >Dead? Wait, is that right? Let me read that again.
    >Okay, yep. You're dead!
"Yeah right. I don't remember that."
    >Okay. You wanna see how you died?
For a split second you see a building in front of you, before blazing light paints shadows on the back of your eyeballs. A wave of speeding air blasts towards you, dust and debris clawing at your skin in its passing. The voice speaks again as you throw your arms up to shield yourself.
    >Yeah, sure. That's believable enough for me.
You open your mouth to speak, but the voice cuts in. It doesn't seem to care that it's interrupting, and it speaks with an impatient sort of hurry.
    >Hey Neal, what's fate?
Your vision returns, the building gone. Instead, a deck of cards is dealing itself in the empty space right in front of you.
    >Control. Gotta love it!
    >So pick a card. What'll it be? Who do you take with you?
The cards in front of you are arrayed in a line stretching off to your left and right. They all have the usual markings in the corners, but only three of them have any design in the middle. The three in front of you, each with a gorgeously vivid, detailed face.

You don't see anything of the sort.

The faces in front of you are all familiar, on a close inspection. Each of a person you could call a friend.

Queen of Hearts: Lacille. The freckled, robust daughter of a rancher. She was raised to ride, to hay, to shoot, and to sing. You met her as a child. The two of you were inseparable, and promised to get married when you grew up. Something made you leave town abruptly, you can't recall what. She never really forgave you for that.

5 of Diamonds: Joseph. He was raised on ships his whole childhood, but once his father died he hasn't left land. You've heard him swear in at least a dozen languages. Works at a local auto shop where he can actually stand the people, and does most of the shop's work without complaint. Pays his half the rent exactly on time every month, and hates being called Joe.

Jack of Clubs: Leigh. A small-time lawyer you became buddies with after he got you off the hook for a minor offense that could have become major. He always talked a lot of crap about his ability to lay a man flat with fancy kung fu, but that hilarious grin of his kept you from ever calling him on it. His taste in suits is abominable.

    >Not much in the way of options? Guess that's your fault, Neal.

You try thinking about your past, but as you seize upon memories they seem to flit away like small fish in a pond.
    >Oh, how the time passes...
    "Fuck you, voice."
    >Aw, did I touch a sore point?

"Who I pick depends on where I'm going. And how long do I have to choose?"
    >You have forever.
As the voice says this, dozens of images swirl into place in your mind.

A bustling city market under the hot sun is filled with shouts and cracks. The scent of metal changing hands lingers in the very air.
A tank tread crushes a man's torn arm into a mass of jelly.
A man lays in front of you on an operating table as a team of yellow-coated doctors works feverishly.
The maw of an enormous creature opens with an audible crack. Thousands upon thousands of teeth are littered inside.
A man stands in a snowy field, miles of footprints behind him.
The screen of an enormous television doing a color test fills your entire vision.
A vintage car makes its way through winding hilly terrain.
A solitary bomb falls with a whistle. Death waits inside, trembling with anticipation.
A kite flies high in a cloudy sky, buffeted by the wind.
An eye opens in the middle of a black void and casts about before settling on you.

"So do I get to pick where I'm going?"
You've only just picked up the Queen of Hearts as the voice says
    >Time's up! It's been forever...
    >So... your fate has been conveniently predetermined.
The space around you crackles and changes from white to static, before swirling into a blender-like mass of blacks, whites, and greys. The cards begin dropping into undefined emptiness beneath you. Then, you feel a lurch as you follow.

You hold the Queen of Hearts tightly to your chest as you fall, fall...

Above, the white is drawn to a single point by the encroaching black. A faint whisper reaches you before the last bit of white is swallowed.
    >I wouldn't die again, Neal. You really wouldn't like that.

You lose track of reality for what feels like just a second, stretched into a year. Then you wake up.
    >> Guess I'll just move stuff forward a bit and hope for input Happy GM !!GKvElBvNwF/ 09/18/10(Sat)02:58 No.12132120
You sway as your eyes open. You're on your feet, and you only just keep yourself from toppling over. The air around you is like a hot blanket. In front of you is a girl you haven't seen in years. Even closer in front of you is her fist, about to smash into your gut. With no time to dodge, you double over in pain from the full body blow. Then she follows up by shoving you roughly onto the ground.
"Good to see you, Neal. You've had that coming for a while now." She looks around. "What the hell's going on? I've got no clue where we are, how we got here, or why the hell you're here out of the blue."

In the distance, you hear what just might be scattered gunshots.

The gunshots sound like they're way in the distance. You're on a gravel road, with a tall grassy field on either side. The gunshots seem to be coming from down the road, where you can see the tops of several buildings. Down the other side of the road a ways is a gas station.

"Since when did a 'sorry' make up for anything? Whatever, make your call."
"Also... of three people, I MAY have chosen you. To stay by my side. Because I like you."
    "What does that even mean?"
You don't answer, because the sight in front of you is a bit distracting.

Up close, you see that the gas station has been shot up well and good, bullet holes in the walls and glass all over the floor. The drone of flies is audible from outside the building, and you see why: the attendant behind the counter is slumped over the top, phone in hand, and blood dripping in a red cascade down the counter's front surface. The register has been ripped out and ransacked, and most of the store has been trashed or emptied by evident looting. There is not a single box of cigarettes remaining, you note with a bit of detachment.

A change in the breeze brings a new smell to your nose. The gas pumps outside have been slowly leaking onto the ground.

"Neal, nobody's here, they've gone. I want to check that newspaper stack out front. Did you see what it said on the front page?"

NASA is preparing a rapid-fire launch of every remaining space vehicle in their inventory, modifying them with additional radiation shielding, and for carrying and powering suspension pods for a tiny number of individuals and a bare amount of supplies. One of the scientists is quoted as saying it's equivalent to throwing a dart while blindfolded and spun, but needing to hit a bulls-eye. The launches are taking place at Canaveral. The Russian and Chinese space programs are believed to be making an effort as well, though their success rate is claimed to be marginal due to recent developments.

Well, for the immediate goal that players have stated of getting on the spaceship away from Earth, you need to find a way to the launch site, and find a way aboard. Difficult but not impossible, and there's numerous things to be accomplished to achieve each large goal. For instance, if you wanted to get to Canaveral from an unknown location, what would your first step be?
    >> Uplifted Infantryman 09/18/10(Sat)06:53 No.12134371

You're deciding whether to grab anything else from the remaining stuff that was deemed to worthless to steal and not fun enough to trash when you see Lacille running toward you from outside. A moment later, you hear why. An engine, loud and roaring, and apparently minus a muffler.

"If playing all those computer games ever taught me something, is that in these situations it's always raiders. Let's hide somewhere, quickly!"

You check for a back entrance, but this tiny little station doesn't have one. There's hardly even a bathroom. You hear the car pulling up near the pumps, with people hooting and shouting over the roar. "Get down, we'll have to hope they didn't see us," you tell Lacille, looking for matches... matches... aha, lighters. No cigs left here, but apparently they didn't need a light. These might help.

As the engine cuts, you hear a voice outside, speaking with the weirdest sort of accent. "Hey, I'mgonna seeif there's any gasin these pumps, seeif wecan get enough togeto the launch site. Well, since there's no other entrance, we are in something of a pickle. No side entrance or anything, no windows we can sneak out of?

If we can't prep for smooth talking, preferrably lying to them that we can get them on the shuttle if they take us there. Our brother works for NASA, etc.

What is she wearing? Anything that screams "RAPE ME!"?
    >> Anonymous 09/18/10(Sat)07:43 No.12134597

Try to stay hidden but prep for ambush. While it wouldn't be smart to fight (don't know how many there are, what they're armed with, etc), we should prep for the possibility. Any weapons we could make due with? Pipes? Hammers? Pringles cans?

I agree with that other dude, let's be smooth talking if we are discovered and bamboozle them to NASA.
    >> Happy GM !!GKvElBvNwF/ 09/18/10(Sat)07:50 No.12134627
You glance around. The two of you might be able to quietly wedge yourselves into the tiny bathroom and hope it's not checked. There's a side window, but it's in view of the door. Not really anything in the way of weapons either--mostly anything worth taken, was taken.

The lighter in your hand makes you think about the gas on the ground outside. Wrap the newspaper around a bit of weight, and you might just take out everybody still in the car--maybe the entire station too given a minute or so. There's still the two out front, but you could maybe rush them in the confusion--and hope they don't have guns.

Then again... maybe these aren't entirely unreasonable folks. Maybe you can string them a line about getting access to a shuttle if they get you to the base. They might not like it if they find out you're a liar, though. And they might not be all that reasonable...

At least Lacille's a down-to-earth girl. Jeans faded by honest work, not some chemical. Sturdy shoes--you'd bet money they're steel toed too. And a light long-sleeved plaid shirt open over a button-up work shirt.

The clothes might not overly entice them, but that's not so true of the girl herself. The face is what's most striking; auburn hair over a spattering of freckles on skin tanned from long days in the fields. As for the rest, the best description for it would be healthily robust. Though you wouldn't know it from looking at her, she's got the kind of muscles that work provides--give her a hug and it feels like cords of steel under her skin. She's not frail-boned, either. She got a lot of crap for that in school, up until the point where having wide hips became a plus, but she's still a bit sensitive on the issue. She's a hair on the short side too, and unlike with the quiet withdrawal she'd get about being solidly built, she's willing to deck anyone who calls her out on height.

Lacille gives you a glare as you eye her over.

Yeah that too. She's a ranch girl after all, not a stereotypical "-4 Str musclegirl" steroid and weights junkie.

    >>Good roll, jeez.
Hoping to win them over is just too risky, you decide. It's a decent enough cover story--the payoff is enough to maybe make up for the lack of believability--but these might be the "steal, rape, kill first, then maybe listen" sort of folks. And as you tear your eyes of Lacille, you decide you won't take that risk. You pop the caps off several cheap lighters, and pour the fluid onto the newspaper, wrapping it around a hunk of drywall that broke loose during the looting. Then you give it a light.
    "You hear somethin', Jeremy?"
"Naw, I--SHEEET!" you hear as the tiny fireball goes flying past the guy's head.

A sound you've heard only in movies is suddenly present--the sound of flammable material, and plenty of it, turning into a raging mess of fire in seconds. Several screams of pain come from outside.

    "Aw, SHEEEEEEET!" you hear again.

"Neal, the the gas tank goes under the whole station! We've got to get out of here before it explodes!" Lacille tells you urgently.

The car had gas, just not a full tank. Getting gas out of those damaged pumps would have been a difficult prospect, too.

"RUN!" you shout, bolting up from your hiding spot with Lacille right behind you. There's two guys silhouetted by the flames in the doorway. One's staring in shock as several people run in agony through the lake of burning gasoline. The other is turning as he sees you approach, and begins to lower his shoulder as he readies to block you.

You drop your own shoulder and charge full speed, hoping to overrun him. It doesn't quite work. You get tangled in his left leg, and the two of you go down onto the concrete, glass shards digging into your skin in more than one spot.

The car, parked next to the leaky pumps, has caught ablaze. More than likely, it will explode before the station does, sending shrapnel flying in the nearby vicinity. Better than the shockwave the station's reserve tank will send blowing across the nearby landscape, liquifying the internal organs of anyone close enough. Better, but not by much.

For a moment you wonder--could this be the building that you saw exploding, where the voice said you died?

    I'm not that guy but...

We are presented no main character description whatsoever.
The start is in the middle of nowhere with only cryptic suggestions of a cocky voice.
Then, as a first problem, we are posed with an extremely difficult situation: we're in the middle of nowhere with raiders severely outnumbering us and no way to escape without getting noticed and attacked (not to mention the certain doom in 5 days).
Unless you intended for us to die, you put us in an unsolvable situation with our current strenght.
Saying that our suggestions lead us here is not a good answer either, as you're the one who accepts and declines suggestions and should have avoided situations like this which will end the quest prematurely.
Your last chance is a deus-ex-machina, but again that's not good GM practice.

As you fall deeper and deeper into blackness, you hear a scream. You might be about to die. But the bastards aren't taking Lacille. You rise up, but instead of trying to break the lock outright, you release the arms holding you, and twist your body as much as possible; you let your opponent have an elbow full in the face as you drop back down, and hear a nasty crunch. He loses his grip, and before he can react you've begun dropping hammer blows into his face, desperation and hate making up for the air that's only now flowing in your veins. The blackness around the edges gives you a sort of tunnel vision, and your opponent's face is a mess before you look up.

Jeremy is stooped over, favoring his right leg. Lacille continues to back away, holding her stomach with one hand.

Gape, and cry out, "Aw sheeeeeeet..." as he crumples.

You haul ass down the road as best you can, you still out of breathe and Lacille's shirt turning red around her hand. The eventual explosion is enough to cause you to stagger, but you don't think you suffered any permanent injury.

Barring clogged traffic, looters, and any other problems that might crop up. "We'd probably be best off heading that way," Lacille says. "See if there's not something we can salvage to get eastward.
