I'm in the mood for a bit of fun and I've been inspired by some of the recent quest threads I've participated in. NOTE: You are not the guy in the OP pic, that's just to give you an idea of wtf is going on. The year is in 1927 in an alternate Chicago with gangster's possessed by demons, a police force with God on their side (one god anyway), and all manner of horror and fantastic shit in between.

    Let's do this:

You wake up in a sleazy, low rent motel room with no memory (hohoho) of how you got there. Before you even know what you're doing your hands move up and down your body checking for damage. Clearly this isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened to you. Your body remembers what to do even if you don't. Your head is bloody but the wound isn't bleeding any more. You stand up and examine yourself in the mirror resting on a cabinet in the side of the room.

You're a midthirties man with two days worth of beard growing on your face. Apparently that's how long you were out. You're still wearing your rumpled suit and your hat is resting on the hanger near the exit of the motel room. You notice a large circle with sigils and symbols painted around the edge to hold something inside.

Then you notice a mistake in one of the sigils. Fuck. What kind of an idiot are you? Were you drunk when you did this? Had you been awake too long? What pressures could've caused you to make such an elementary mistake?

It's become very clear the imp you summoned for information got out of the circle, knocked you the fuck out, drank all your booze and escaped to cause havoc on this plane. Your headwound has caused you to lose all your short term memory. All you know is that you're a private investigator on a case so dangerous you felt the need to rent a motel room instead of going home or to your office. Your name is Richard Brown.

    wat do?

Any other items of interest in the room?

    >Any other items of interest in the room?

Your gun, in its holster, and some car keys are resting on a table beside the bed. There's a door to a bathroom on the side but there's nothing in there that you wouldn't expect.

    Trip just for clarity.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/10(Thu)13:00 No.10092194
Check pockets. Maybe you left some notes or something in them?

Also, get the gun holster & keys.

    Gun+keys got.

You find two things inside the interior pocket of your coat.

    1) A note that says "Meeting with Spiggy: 23:30 at Bertolucci's on Tuesday the 22nd."
    2) A receipt for the motel room, for 5 days, marked the 23rd.
    >> The Boss 05/27/10(Thu)13:06 No.10092269
Maybe we should head to Bertoluccis, we might remember something. We can look for this spiggy character there, too.

What day is it first? I'm guessing we've already met the Spig-meister, so I doubt we'd find him/her/it. Might be able to ask someone about our meeting, though...

Alright then. You leave the room and find yourself in a hallway with a whole bunch of other motel rooms. You go to the end of the hall, see the desk clerk reading one of the funnies. You exit the motel and see that you're an inner city shithole. There's a couple of cars parked on the other side of the road but there's nothing wrong with your longterm memory so you recognise yours immediately. A glance at your watch tells you it's just a little past 22:00. The sky is clear and the moon is full.

    What do, where to?

You step in, sit down and the seat seems to be molded to you. The smells are so familiar to you. Under the seat you find a small wooden box and upon opening it you find a couple of items.

    1) Ammunition of the same calibre. Most made of lead, 7 of silver and 1 of gold.
    2) A crucifix.
    3) A scroll with some script written on it in a language you don't understand or recognise.

As you're examining the box, you hear the shrill scream of a terrified woman echo from building to building, on street level. Somewhere nearby something bad is happening.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/10(Thu)13:31 No.10092581
Being a private dick, you can't let this scream go unnoticed. Take the extra ammo (and possibly the crucifix) and then TO THE RESCUE!

Load two silver bullets into the gun, leaving the rest normal. Note the chambers the bullets are in. Go off to find the cause of the disturbance, by car or foot, whichever is faster.

Sorry, I missed your post while writing my previous one. I'll assume this is also you:

    >Being a private dick, you can't let this scream go unnoticed. Take the extra ammo (and possibly the crucifix) and then TO THE RESCUE!

Right. You grab the ammunition as noted by (>>10092589) and try to track down where the sound is coming from. You run to the alley nearest you but that isn't it. She screams again, this time you can hear what she's shouting. "HELP. ANYONE!"

Her screams help you locate her. You enter the mouth of another alley the next block down. At the end of it you see a woman crawling backwards on her hands. She's very quickly nearing a dead end. In front of her is a demon. You get a brief flash and realised this is the imp you summoned. He hasn't noticed you yet. He's leering attention is focused fully on the woman. Her eyes widen as she notices your silhouette by the street.

    >Her eyes widen as she notices your silhouette by the street
Well fuck, that's going to give us away. In that case, attack the bastard thing.

Which raises a good point, do we know if our weaponry is going to be effective?

The imp didn't actually notice that her eyes had widened at the sight of you, he just thought the woman was scared of him. When you command him to desist he turns around and looks at you. Then he laughs.

"Hahaha. You bloody wankah! I'm on holiday in the second circle when you summon me into an incomplete circle. So awright. I roll with the times, innit? I make this my holiday, I break for it and have my fun for a couple of nights. A bit of a slap and tickle with some lassies. But now you come with a bloody crucifix? Am I a vampire? You wound me sirrah, you wound me!"

He takes a couple of steps away from the woman and faces you fully.

"You better walk away geezer. I did you a favour by not slitting your throat when I knocked you out. Why don't you forget you ever saw me?"

How do we banish it? Specifically, does it require arm waving and chanting, or is it just a mental invocation?

If it's the latter, let's ask him some more questions.

'Man, you're right, aren't you? But please enlighten me. Come on. I'll only take five minutes of your time. Did I tell you nothing when I summoned you?'

    Meanwhile, think up the invocation!

    >> Mephisto !!52RhwoWDjpf 05/27/10(Thu)14:06 No.10093063
You desperately try to remember how to banish what you summon. Somehow you recall last time you summoned an otherworldy creature, it was a fire elemental. Your circle was fine that time and so the 30 second chant that you have to say out loud to banish it was. There are no shortcuts unfortunately, not for the likes of you anyway.

    >Ask him his name, what was he doing when we summoned him.
    >Man, you're right, aren't you? But please enlighten me. Come on. I'll only take five minutes of your time. Did I tell you nothing when I summoned you?'

"Mate, I ain't inclined to give you the State of the Union address. Either get out of my face or I will drag you to fucking hell." The imp seems convinced that you're not going to leave quitely so it's breathing in heavily. Every breath seems to make it slightly larger. A couple of seconds since it stopped talking and it's already gained at least 10 pounds and a few inches.

So there's no easy way of getting rid of it, and it's not going to actually help us.

Bugger off, see if he goes back to the woman, THEN blast him.
    >> Mephisto !!52RhwoWDjpf 05/27/10(Thu)14:19 No.10093297

Just as you've made the decision to blast it, it starts running towards you.

You shoot it. The first silver bullet leaves your revolver (you've got 2 silver 5 lead just so you know, it holds 7 in total and you've got quite a few clanging around in your pocket) and flies through the air straight at the imp.

A sigil carved into the side of the handle of your gun begins to glow as you shoot the first shot. This sparks a flash in your memory of you sitting in front of a bench in ... your home? your office? ... somewhere, carving the sigil and chanting over and over. You can't remember what it does but you remember the word that activates the spell.

But maybe it isn't necessary quite yet. The imp is hit by the first silver bullet right in the center of the chest. You have a remarkably good aim! The imp comes to a halt and looks at you in surprise. You shoot again in the same spot and he falls backwards and lays on the ground.

You've brought the imp down and it's already beginning to shrivel to its original size. But it's still on this plane. But it's choking on its own blood.

The woman is still in shock and crying uncontrollably.

First things first, we banish it. We can always summon it up again later, should we remember why.

We should interrogate the woman, ask her name and what she was doing when she was attacked. Maybe she knows something.

    >This! Tell the woman 'GET UP!' and then banish it while keeping gun trained on it.

As you stand over the imp and begin to chant, blood begins to pour out of his mouth. For the first time since you laid eyes on him, he is without the air of friendly malevolence. Without a trace of accent he says, "I may not know your true name but I know the stench of your soul. I swear by the blood of my lord Abdiel, I will find you and make you pay for this pain."

You take a couple of steps back and the ground surrounding the imp begins to dissolve as he is claimed by the pit. Like a stone dropping in water, there are ripples in the rock as reality bends momentarily, but like the water it's calm again soon. It's like he was never there, even the blood is gone.

    >No! No time to talk. Gunshots are loud, we might have been heard. Banish it. Make sure the woman is safe.

You walk over to the woman and help her stand up. She is still gibbering but makes it clear she isn't far from where she lives
    >We should interrogate the woman, ask her name and what she was doing when she was attacked. Maybe she knows something.

She doesn't know shit. All she knows is that two other girls were murdered in the previous nights and she was about to be the third. She's not in the mood to talk to you. She runs away, presumably in the direction of where she lives.

    Alright, house it is.

You enter the car and begin to drive. As you begin to drive you see a couple of signs and street names and realise you're not in Chicago. You're in a medium sized town about 2 hours outside the city limits. Both the house and Bertolucci's are back in Chicago.

The time it takes to drive gives you some time to think and try to remember more. You're starting to get flashes of what you were up to but it's still too indistinct to put together coherently. Was it a missing person? A missing object? A cheating wife? Something started you down this dangerous road but it's still unclear.

You arrive in the city and soon enough find yourself near your neighbourhood. And just as you're you're approaching the corner to the road which is yours, you notice a rather dark looking vehicle parked about two houses down from yours. You've never seen it before. Nobody on your road owns that kind of car.

More importantly there are two people inside

Alright. You keep driving past your road and slow to a halt, parking just on the other side. Looking back and to the left of your car you can see the back of theirs.

They're not parked right under the street light so you can only tell that one man is smaller than the other, although that isn't saying much since the other is a fucking hulk of a man. They just sit there not saying much to each other. The bigger man whips out a cigarette and starts smoking. In the brief moment the match is lit you make a couple of details, the bigger man has tusks. The smaller one gets visibly annoyed and says something to make the tusked one put it out.

Now what do you want to do?

You sit in the car and ponder the situation. Who is Richard Brown? Who would he talk to about this case. You know for sure that you're a meticulous note taker. Something about the disastrous year you spent as a disastrous news reporter rubbed off on you. You still had a couple of contacts at the Tribune and even a few in the police but your notes. That would be the key to remembering. Maybe all of it wouldn't come back but anything was better than nothing.
    >> The Boss 05/27/10(Thu)15:30 No.10094432
Do we remember where we left them? If its in the house, I say we wait til nightfall, and as carefully as a private eye knows how, sneak in via a window to avoid suspician. We should take care to note anyone else watching from other positions.

Goons watching my house. Just what the hell have I gotten myself into? Must've searched my place, no sense going there right now. Maybe once they're gone.
Bertolucci's sounds like a fancy place. Can't go there without cash. Spiggy. Is he one of my permanent contacts, or did he only come in on this case? I tried to remember.

It's already night, it's about 00:30 at the moment. You can't remember exactly where you left them but if they're not with you the only other place they can be would be in the safe in your house. You never leave sensitive documents at the office.

In the police you know a couple of guys who you've done favours for over the years but the one who trusts you the most is Detective Grayne. You helped him track down an elf-stolen child 2 years ago.

My last lead went up in smokes. I should check if they found my stash back home, but not with those guys out front. At first a thought of calling the cops on them from the nearest payphone crossed my mind, but I decided against it. Who knows if they've got friends I haven't seen yet.
They shouldn't be expecting me in my office. Whoever "they" are. The hope of finding anything there was slim, but it was a hope.

    Gotcha. Nicely done.

So that was that. The house was under watch by who knew who many. No point in risking that.

So you drive away quietly, only turning on the headlights after you're clear of the street your on. You make your way down town and find yourself nearing your office building. Mindful of the lesson you just learnt, you drive cautiously several times around the block to make sure no one was keeping an eye on the place.

You park two blocks away and walk the distance to the building. Still cautious you go around the back and mutter a couple of words that opens the door. It's a good thing the owner of the building trusts you. Again you're cautious and you take several flights of stairs instead of the lift. Once on your floor you open the door to the hallway and come to an abrupt halt.

All the lights on the floor are turned off. Except for yours. The glass is just a little opaque so you can see the silhouette inside. It's a woman. And she's sitting down in front of your desk, facing way from you. She's smoking and seems quite relaxed. As if she's expecting company.

    >> Mephisto !!52RhwoWDjpf 05/27/10(Thu)16:07 No.10094954
As a matter of fact you do own the place, or pretty much anyway. After talking a suicidal cherub off a ledge, and thus saving the building from the resultant explosion caused by such a death, the owner refuses to take rent money off you.

So you walk in. Calm. Smooth. Open the door, walk in.

"Why, Mr. Brown." she turns around to face you as you walk in. She's a stunner. 10 years ago she would've been a blonde bombshell. Now she was even better. She'd been around the kind of people that pretty girls don't last long around. She'd clearly lasted. She has a pleasant smile on her face, but you can tell straight away she's a shark. A smart, sexy shark.

"What a pleasure to see you. I do hope you don't mind me arriving before you?"

"When I induce these visions in myself I do find it ever so difficult to pinpoint the exact times."

You take off your coat and hat, put them on the coat hanger. You still have your gun in its holster, attached to your shoulder. You walk around your desk and have a seat.

    >'What can I do for you? Wasn't aware my office was open, but good for you - and me.'

"You're absolutely right, sir. I do so love to chitchat but it just isn't the time for it, is it?" she replies, perfectly aware she hasn't quite answered your question.

"I think you know why I'm here, don't you?"

Haha, it's just a bit of fun, there's no sourcebook or anything.

If you want to discover the noir genre though, I highly recommend anything written by Raymond Chandler or Dashiel Hammet. Then you can progress on to the Richard Stark and the Parker novels.

As for movies there's a zillion. My own favourites include Double Indemnity, the Big Sleep, Rififi, le Samourai, and countless others. You're in for a world of joy man.

"If you've been by your house or even your ex-wife's house you know that there are men watching them, waiting for you. Of course unlike Grigori, my boss has more precise instruments to know where you'll be." At this she taps her head. Fucking seers.

"Now, you may have begun your current pursuit under the misapprehension that the item you seek belongs to young Ms. Rondeaux, but at this time you know as well as I: It. Does. Not."

Her clipped tone made it clear her employer wasn't willing to wait much longer.

"Now, please, do not be alarmed," she brought her hand up abruptly, almost doing the opposite of what she was suggesting "I am not about to bring violence to your office. My gift is completely passive. But understand this, Mr. Brown, my employer is not like Grigori and his thugs. Malthuriel is old fashioned. Very, old fashioned. And he WILL have that which belongs to him."

"So you have a simple choice. Hand me the scroll and you shall be handsomely rewarded. Or do not." She ended her sentence as a challenge. Didn't even utter a threat. Just made it clear to him what could happen. What would happen.

From long term memory you have this:

Malthuriel: one of the richest men in Chicago, owning wide tracts of property outside it and huge skyscrapers within it. He first appeared, exactly the same age he is now, about 70 years ago. Rumour has it that he may or may not be a fallen angel. He may or may not be above the law. He may or may not have killed the 13 demons found dead outside his mansion during a a party after the last election.

A minute or two of walking, her by your side, a head shorter than you and ever so pleasant to look at, and soon enough you find yourselves in front of the car.
